OnSundaylast,HisGracetheArchbishoplaidthe foundationstoneofaConventatSt.FrancisXavier's NativeMission,Wandering.TheConventwillbeoccupiedbytheSistersofSt.JohnofGodinSeptember,when theywillcareforasmallnumberofnativeinfantswhile dormitoriesandclass-roomsarebeingbuilt.
PresentwiththeArchbishopattheceremonywere theMinisterforNativeAffairs(Mr.R.McDonald),the MinisterforRailwaysandTransport(Mr.Seward),Mrs. Cardell-Oliver(HonoraryMinister),theChairmanof theWanderingRoad`Board(Mr.H.S.Gilbertson),and theSuperioroftheMission(FatherLeoHornung, P.S.M.).
ThewallsoftheConventarepartiallyconstructed, andwhenthebuildingisfinisheditwillbethethirdcompletedunitinacomprehensivebuildingplanfortheinstitution.Itisbeingbuiltfrommaterialsproducedon theproperty,thewallsbeingofgranitefromtheMission's ownquarry.Inallfuturebuildingalso,theCommunity willavoidtheuseofmaterialswhicharedifficulttoobtain.
Theadditionalbuildingswillcomprisegirls'dormitory andschoolblock,church,communitycentre(which\yin includearecreationhallandcinema,generalstore,bank andpostoffice).boys'dormitoryandschoolblock,monastery,men'sdiningroom,andkitchenblock.Thebuildingswillbelaidoutina.semi-circlefacingacircular drive.Theplan,whichincludesareservoirandspecially laid-outcatchmentarea,wasdesignedbyMissMarie Jackson.ThemembersoftheCommunityhavebuiltsix milesofroadtotheMissionandhaveerectedtenmile, oftelephonelinefromthemainroad.
ARCHBISHOP'SADDRESS.
Thelayingofthisfoundation stoneandthededicationofthis ConventtothegloryofGodin honourofSt.JeromeAemilian,is anotherstepalongtheroadof establishingSt.FrancisXavier's NativeMission,whichwecommencedlatein1944.Although barelytwoandahalfyearshaveelapsed,andalthoughthese aremostdifficulttimestoundertakesuchaproject,yetmuch hasbeenaccomplished.Roads, bridgesandaculverthavebeen built,andtheMissioncentre broughtwithin80milesofPerth. AtemporaryMonastery,which willultimatelybeusedasahospital,hasbeenerected,asalso haveasubstantialmachinery shedandotherbuildings,mostly ofa thetemporarynature.Already Missionhasacquiredconsiderableplant,whichwillgredtlyfacilitatefutureprogress.We mustcongratulatetheSuperior andthosewhoassistedhim,on themarkedprogressthathas beenmade.Asyouknow,this buildingisintendedtobearesidencefortheNunsofSt.Johnof God,whowillconducttheFound. lingHome,Orphanage,Hospital andSchool.Theywillbein residencebytheendofthisyear, andasmallnumberofinfants willbecaredforbytheSisters intheConventbuildinguntilthe Orphanagesareerected.
OBLIGATIONSTOHALFCASTES.
Ofallthesocialquestionson whichourattentionisfocussed to-day,noneisentitledtogreaterconsiderationthanthatofcar. ingforthedescendantsofthe Australianaboriginal,whose countrywealienatedalittle morethanacenturyago.And thissocialquestionfallsunder twoheadings:thefull-blooded
HisGraceBlessingtheConvent blackandthehalf-caste.Here atWandering,ourproblemis primarilythatofthehalf-caste. Itmustberealisedthatthisisa separateproblem.Inevitablythe half-castewillbeabsorbedinto thewhiteraceFortoolong theyhavebeenthehelpless,neglectedhangers-onofwhitecommunities.Itissad,butitistrue, thatnorealefforthaseverbeen madetoamelioratetheirunhappylot.Itismyconsidered opinionthatmuchofthepast neglectisduetothesmall amountofmoneythattheState Governmenthasatitsdisnosal fornativewelfare.Theofficers oftheNativeAffairsDepartmentareefficientandwelltrainedandkeenlyinterestedintheir work.Buttheyhavenotat theirdisposalsufficientfundsto makeanyrealapproachtothe problem.HereinWesternAustralia,theStateGovernmentan-
nuallyexpendsapproximately £70,000toadministeritsDepartmentandcareforanativepopukationnearing25,000.Obviouslylittlecanbedonewithsuch asmallappropriation. I be lievethattheCommonwealth Governmenthasaverydefinite financialobligationtothisState ofWesternAustraliaforthis work.EventhoughtheState mayadministertheDepartment dealingwithnatives,theCommonwealthshouldprovidegeneroussubsidies,particularlyin viewofitsownpolicywithregardtothenativepopulationsof theIslands,suchasNewGuinea.
FEDERALANDSTATERESPONSIBILITY.
Iwasdelightedtolearnthat theGoveinmenthadappointed Mr.F.E.Batemantoconduct thesurveyofthevariousInstitutionsandMissionsservingthe nativepopulation. Iwasmore thandelightedtolearnthat,in makingthisannouncement,the MinisterforNativeAffairs,Mr. McDonald,statedthathisGovernmentconsideredthatthefinancialobligationforthewelfare ofaboriginesandthoseofaboriginalbloodshouldbesharedby theCommonwealthandState Governments.Inaleaderdealingwiththeannouncement,the "WestAustralian"pointedout thatnoefforthadeverbeen madecomparabletothecomplex andcontroversialproblemthat confrontsus.Theyinferredthat effortsbypastGovernments havebeeninadequate.This,1 amsorrytosay,islamentably true.HereatWanderingwe havealreadyspentaveryconsiderableamountforplant, buildings,stockandtheacquisitionofadjoiningfarmlands.Includedinthissumisanamount exceeding£2,000fortheconstructionofroads,bridgesand culvertstraversingCrownlands.
Wehavereceivedgenerousdonationsfromthegeneralpublicand princelysubsidiesfromthePontificalMissionAidSocieties.But wehavenotreceivedanyfinan vialaidfromeitherGovernments,orfromtheLotteries Commission,apparentlysetupto relieveconsolidatedrevenueof justclaimsforsocialwelfare.
ItistruethattheStateGovernmentretiredamortgageonan abandonedfarmwhichnow formsapartoftheNativeReserve;butthisisCrownland, andwearemerelytheoccupiers astrusteesforthenatives.

DeathstrucksuddenlyonSaturday.morninglastwhen fourSistersofSt.JohnofGodwere'bathingnearTrigg Islandinareef-enclosedbasinknownasthe"Sisters' Pool."Thenunshavemaintainedaresthomeinthe localityfor36years,andthepoolinwhichtheybathewas blessedbythelateMonsignorBurke20yearsago.Itis consideredtobeasafebathingspotexceptathightide, whentheeffectsoftheheavyrollersbreakingonthereefs canhefelt.
WhentheSistersenteredthewateratabout10.30 a.m.thesunwasshining.Shortly,however,astorm blewup,andacross-windcreatedastrongundertow, whichsweptoneoftheparty,SisterMaryChrysostom, outtosea.
TheotherSisterscalledtoapassingcarforassistance,andMr.FrederickCharlesFloydwho,withhisson aged12,wasapassenger,strippedoffhisclothingand divedintothesea.Afteran'exhaustingstrugglewiththe surf,hereachedthedrowningSister,buthisownstrength gaveout,andhewasdeadwhenanotherrescuer,Mr. Snow,reachedhim.Mr.Snowbroughthisbodytothe shore.ThebodyofSisterChrysostomwaswashed ashoreabout12.50p.m.Anespeciallytragicfeatureof thedoublefatalitywasthatitwaswitnessedbyMr. Floyd'syoungson.
SisterMaryChrysostomwas bornatCountyKerry,Eire,and cametoAustraliain1938.Only 26yearsofage,shewasthe daughterofMr.andMrs.Patrick Kissane,bothofwhomareliving.Onebrotherandsisterare inEire,whiletheothersister, SisterMaryRoch.isattached totheCommunityofSt.Johnof GodatKalgoorlie.ThedeceasedwasanieceofMotherM. TheMinisterforRailwaysand Transport(Mr.Seward)said thatheregardedtheoccasionas oneofthemostimportantthat hadoccurredforsometime.He hadlistenedtoHisGrace'sremarkswiththegreatestinterest. becausetheproblembeingdealt withwasoneoftheoutstanding problemsfacingtheState.He believedthatwhentheresultsof therecentcensusweremade known,theywouldrevealthat thenativepopulationwasfar greaterthanthenumberatpresentestimated.Insufficienteducationhadbeengiventothe natives,andthatwasamistake whichshouldnothavebeenmane. Theplanthatwasbeingputinto effectatWanderingwasthemost desirablethatcouldbemade.He hadlongfeltthatthereshould hemoreprovisionforthoseofa differentcolourfromourselves, othatthey.mighthebetterfittedtotaketheirplaceinthe ,ommunity.
FINANCIALSUPPORTJUSTIFIED. HisGrace'sclaimtofinancial supportwaswellfounded.It couldnotbebetterfounded;and
anyallocationthatmightbe madewouldhavehisheartiest support.
ThereweremanyfinancialdemandsontheGovernment,and hehestatedtothinkhowmuch hewasgoingtoasktheGovernmenttospendinhisowndepartment,buttheneedsofthecitizenscouldnotbeneglectedand themoneymustbefound.
TRIBUTETOARCHITECT.
TheHonoraryMinister(Mrs. Cardell-Oliver)saidthatthe blessingwhichhadbeenpassed onthebuilding,shewasquite sure,wouldbearwonderfulfruit. Inthesacredceremoniesthat hadtakenplacetherewasan atmosphereofsomethingwhich wouldmeanmuchinthefuture ofthatplace.Shethoughtit wonderfulthatHisGracehadactuallyplacedtheworkofdesigningthebuildingsinthehandsof awoman.Shecongratulated MissMarieJackson(thearchitect)onherwork,andshefelt thatitwasnotonlyatributeto herbuttowomanhoodingeneralthatshehadbeenputonto suchanimportantjobasthat.
SURPRISINGPROGRESS.
TheChairmanoftheWander. ingRoadBoard(Mr.H.S.Gilbertson)saidthathewassurprisedtoseehowmuchhadalreadybeendoneattheMission. TheplansfortheConventand forfuturebuildingswerefine. andhewasonlysorrythatthe RoadBoardwasnotinapositontogivemuchhelp.His Boardhadaterrtoryof8,000 squaremiles;butonlyasmall populationandthesmallestincomeof'anyroadboardinthe State.HerecalledhavingvisitedtheareaofwheretheMission wassituatedinhisboyhood, whenWanderingBrookwas knownasSleepyCreek.Itwas thenawilderness,andhewasastoundedatwhathadalready beenaccomplishedthere.

Thedeceasedgentlemanleaves awidowand.twosons,Brianand Don.TheeldersonisemployedwithMcRobertson-MillerAviationCo.,whiletheyoungerboy isstillatWesleyCollege.The deathofFrederickFloydisthe firstbreakinafamilyofsix, fourbrothersandtwosisters. Hismotherandfatherarealso living.
HeroicRescue
WhilethetragicdeathofSisterMaryChrysostomhasplungedtheCommunityatSt.Johri's intoprofoundgloom(forthe lateSisterwasremarkablefor hergaietyandhighspirits),the nunsareevenmoreperturbed bythelossofMr.Frederick CharlesFloyd,whosoheroically attemptedherrescue.
Fromhisyouthakeenyachtsmanandgoodswimmer,thelate Mr.Floydwasespeciallyinterestedinfishingasahobby.He hadashackatScarborough,and wasenroutefromthereto NorthBeachwhenhisassistance wasaskedandhemethisdeath. Asaconsequencehehadanex pertknowledgebothofthecurrentsandthereefsofthatpart ofthecoast.Althoughhisgallantrywasnotpublicised,hehad rescuedseveralpeoplefromthe sea.Hehadconstantlywarned swimmersaboutattemptingto swimagainstthecurrent,butin hislastheroicefforthehadto doithimself.Evenso,hit, familybelievesthathaditnot beenforthereefs,hewouldhave survivedSaturday'sordeal.
TheessentialcourageandnobilityofMr.Floyd'scharacter appearallthemoreremarkable whenitisrememberedthathis wasnotarash,unknowingaction.Hemusthaveknownas herandownthebeachthathis chancesofsavingSisterChrysostomwereslenderandthatthe oddswereheavilyagainsthis ownsurvival.Yettherewas nohesitancyordelay.Hisspontaneityandgenerosity,despite hisfore-knowledge,addlustilyto thequalityofhisheroism.
ThelateMr.Floydwasborn atGosnells,andhadhisschooling mainlyatMaylands.Foryears heservedwiththeMilitiainthe LightHorse,andduringthelast warenlistedwiththeA.I.F.and servedfor51years,risingtothe rankofQuarterMasterSer.

Thelategentlemanwasknown asaverygoodlivingman,ana hisfriendsclaimthathediedas hehadlived,tryingtohelp others.Hismother,although prostratedbygrief,saidshe wasproudthathersonhadgivenhislifeinrescuinganun. Mayherestinpeace.

Marriagewasmadeforman,notmanformarriage."It istheCatholicChurchalonewhichhasstoodadamantly forthefull,unequivocaldoctrineenunciatedleyChrist.

SovietUnionhasgivencogencytotheargumentsofour militaryleadersthroughtheincreasingbarragesofinvective againstthiscountry.Bytheir high-handedproceduresinareas undertheircontrol,bytheir. singularinabilitytounderstand theplainlanguageofinternationalagreements,bytheirobstructivetacticsintheSecurity

Oneofthemostdifficultand heart-breakingpartsofthework ofthepriestsinthebushisthe instructionofthechildreninthe Stateschools.Thedifficulties springfrommanysources.In thefirstplace,thereisthephysicaldifficultyofvisitingthe schoolsatall.Evenwhenteachersandschoolcommitteesare helpful,oratleastnotantagonistic,itisnotaneasytasktogo toschoolsatfixedandregular timeswhenthesearescattered aroundaparisheveryfewmiles alongbadroads.Ifthenumber ofschoolsislarge(insomeparishestherearemorethan50 Stateschools,manyofthem small,one-teacherschools),it maybeimpossibletovisitthem allandthelargeronesmaynot bevisitedevenweekly.Where thisdifficultyoccursitisbetter toattendtothelargerschools andvisitthemmorefrequently andregularly.
Fromthisdifficultyarisesanother-thelittletimethatthe priesthasathisdisposal.In ourCatholicschools,atleasthalf anhourissetaparteachday
forreligiousinstruction.This isdeemedalltoolittle.Yet thechildrentherehavetheCatholic,andevenreligious,atmospherearoundthemallthetime. Howisthepriesttoinstructthe childreninseveraldifferent gradesinonehouraweek-or perhapsafortnight?Ifhedividesthechildrenintotwo groups-anditisuselesstotake childrenundersevenoreight yearsofagewiththosewhoare severalyearsolder-itreduces histimetohalfanhour.
Thenthereistheattitudeof thechildrentowardstheclassitisoftenregardedbytheteachersasanunwarrantedintrusion intotheirteachingtimeandchildrenaresentofftothe"Catholic BibleClass,"asitiscalled,withoutanymanifestationofgoodwillonthepartoftheteacher. Thepriestwillhavetobecarefultoremoveanyprejudicefrom themindsofthechildrentowardstheinstruction.

EvenSundaymayseemlittledifferentfromtheotherdaysofthe weekandchildrendonotbecome Mass-consciousonSundays,becausemostSundaysarenotMass daysforthem,
darknessingthem,willappreciatethem evenmore.Apriestneednot fearofbeingtoolavishinhis distributionofholypictures; theywillpayhandsomedividends,
Facedwiththeseandother difficulties,thepriestmaybe temptedtoaskhimselfifitis worthwhilemakingtheeffort thatisrequiredforsuchseeminglytriflingresults.Butitis unthinkablethatthechildrenbe leftwithoutinstruction.Ifthis canbeprovidedinotherways, forexample,byCatechismclassesorbycorrespondencelessons, thetaskofthepriestwillbe greatlylightened,butthese meansshouldberegardedasa helpratherthanasasubstitute forthepriest'spersonalcontact withthechildren.Theywilldo muchtoovercom,thedifficulties mentionedaboveandwillmake thepriest'svisittotheschool morewelcomeandmoreprofitable.If,however,nosuch meansareavailableorsuccessful,thepriestwillhavetomake thebestofhistimeathisvisits totheschools.
If.then,thisdifficulttaskisto befaced,howaretheobstacles toitssuccesstobeovercome?
Thefirststeptosuccessis,of course,prayer.WithoutGod's blessingnothingwillbeachieved. Andthatblessingwillcomeby prayer.
Thenextstepwouldseemto betheattitudeofthepriesthimselftothiswork.Ifhestarts outwiththeattitudethatitis anunpleasanttasktobeaccomplishedassummarilyaspos. sibleandinspiteofthechildren,heisnotlikelytoaccomplishmuch.Itisnecessaryto haveasympatheticattitudetowardsthechildrenandadeterminationtosecuretheirco-operation.Thiswillbehelpedby hisappreciationofthedifficultiesthechildrenthemselveshave tofaceandbyjudiciouspraise ofthesmallestefforttheymay make.
Countrychildrenshouldhave anadvantageovercitychildren intheirhomelife.Theyhave notthedistractionsaroundthem thataboundinthecities-those notwellconversantwithcountry lifemaythinkthattheabsence ofpictureshowsandotherdie. tractionsofcitylifegivesthe countrychildagreatadvantage athome.Yet,isthisso?Most countryhomesnowhavethe wireless,anditseemsthatthe sessionsthatinterestthechildrenarejustatthattimeofthe eveningwhenthechildrenmight possiblylearnsomecatechism, betweentheeveningmealand bedtime.Whenthesessionsare finished,thechildrenaretired. Thismodernhelptopeopleinthe beckblockmayproveagreat hindrancetotheteachingofreligioninthehome.Countrychildrenalsousuallyhavetotravel agooddistancetoandfrom schooland,indairyingdistricts, oftenhavetohelpmilkingbefore theygotoschoolorafterthey comehome.Inmanyfarming districtsworkgoesonwhileday-

Wehavetofacethefact,too, thatforgenerationspastthe countrypeoplehavenotreceived muchinthewayofreligiousinstruction.Manyoftheparents ofto-dayhavegrownupwithoutasolidgroundingintheir faith.Theverydifficultiesthat lie'inthewayoftheirchildren nowweretheirowndifficultiesa generationago.Theyfeellit tleornoresponsibilityinthe matterofreligioustrainingof theirchildren.Moresowhet, thereisquestionofamixedmar. riage.Canitbewonderedif thechildrenatfirstarenotvery responsive? Yet,experienceshowsthatthey willrespond.Nothingappeals tochildrenlikethespiritualand,iftheirdifficultiescanbeovercome,theresponsewillbemost heartening.And,ifthepriest setsaboutthisworkfortifiedby prayerandwithasympathyborn ofhisappreciationoftheirdifli culties,hehasmadeabeginning thatmustbeproductiveofgreat good.
Itisin,p,:rtarrttogaintheconfidenceandco-operationofthe children.Astoryisalways welcometochildrenandarouses interest.Priestsmaynothaw afacilityforstory-telling,but, thesimplestoriesfromSacred Scripture,thefactsofthelifeof urLord,OurLady,theApostles arealwaysinterestingandgenerallynewtothebushchildren. Onepointitiswelltobearin mind-childrenwilllistenintent lytothesamestorymanytimes over,sonogreatabilityasa storytellerisrequiredonthe partofthepriest.Holypictureshaveanimmensefascinationforallchildren-eventhose inourCatholicschoolswilldo amazingthingstogetanother holypicture,evenasmallprayerbooksizeone,andthatthough theymayalreadyhavedozensof them.Countrychildren,who havefewopportunitiesofreceiv-

Wecaneasilyseetheconnectionbetweenthethreegreattheologicalvirtues.Faith'isthe foundationofhope,andthrough thesevirtuesweascendtocharity.
Hope,whoseofficeitistoelevateourwills,issaidtoshare thecertitudeoffaith,whose abidingplanisinourintellects, basedasitisontheconvic tionthatGod,Whomweknow throughFaith,lovesusandwill neverdesertus.
Godhasgivenusthefaithto knowHimandthecharityto loveHim,butHehasalsogiven ushopetohelpuswalkwith constancyontheroadthatleads toglory.
Thehopeofrewardhelpsus tobearpatientlythetrialsand tribulationsofthislife,andto dogreatthingsfortheloveof God.

NECESSITYOFHOPE.
Wemustbethoroughlyconvincedofthenecessityofhope aswellasoffaith.Ifwecannotbesavedwithoutfaith,neithercanwewithouthope.Hope isanindispensablemeans(necessitatemedii)ofsalvation.
ManyCatholicshaveamistakenideaonthispoint.They haveagreathorrorofanything thatoffendsagainstfaith,but theypaylittleornoattentionto offencesagainsthope.They failtorealisethatfaithalone withouthopewouldbeuseless. IndeedHolyMotherChurch prayscontinuallynotonlyfor anincreaseoffaith,butalsoof hopeinallherchildren.And God,whowishesustobelievein Himandcommandsustolove Himwithallourheart,bidsus alsotohopeinHimwithallour heart.
Thisprescriptionisgivento usnotmerelybynaturallaw (whichobligesustouseall meanstoanend),butitisa commandgivenandrepeated timeaftertimebypositiveDivineLaw.
ConfidenceinGodistheone thinglackinginthemodern world.Ifweplacedourselves inHishandsandrealisedthat hiswords,"Fearnot Iam withyou,"wereapplicablenow astheyweretwothousandyears ago,thenwewouldfindthat peaceofmindthattherushand complexityofmoderncivilisationhasdestroyed.
Thisdutyofhopeisboth affirmative,inthatwemustpositivelyelicithopeandnegativein thatwemaynotdespairofGod's helpnorinordinatelypresume uponit.Buttofulfilthisduty theactofhopeneednotbevery explicit.Itissufficientto pray,toperformtheordinary dutiesofourCatholiclifeand toreceivetheSacramentsworthily.However,althoughourobligationsarethenfulfilledinrespectofhope,explicitactsof hope-arevaluabletoourwaveringwillsandmostpleasingto God.
SINSAGAINSTHOPE.
Sinsagainstthevirtueofhope are,firstly,thoseofomission, whenwedeliberatelyfailto elicitanactofhopewhenwe oughttodoso;secondly,those ofcommission,whicharethree: aversionfromGodandheaven, anactwhichisdirectlyopposed totheactprecedinghope,namely,desireofGodandheaven. Secondly,deipair,whichisa lackoftrustandconfidencein God.Ithasbeendefinedasa "voluntaryandcomplete'abandonmentofallhopeofsaving one'ssoul,andofhavingthe meansnecessaryforthisend." Itisthusnotapurelypassive attitudeofsoulbutratherapositiveone.
Thisdespairusuallysprings fromthefactthattheperson thinksthathissinsarefartoo greattobeforgiven,orthatGod isunwillingtopardonhim,or thatitistoohardforhuman naturetoco-operatewithGod, andsohe,inmodernparlance, "dropshisbundle." NowGod'sChurchisnoless ONEthananycivilstate.We seefromthetermsofitsinstitution,fromtheteachingandactionoftheApostles,thatallits membersmustbelinkedtogetherinunityoffaith,ofSacraments,ofcommunion,and aboveallofgovernment.Christ's Churchisonekingdom,one household,onelivingbody,whose membersactandreactupon eachother,andarejoinedand controlledinlivingunitybyone principleoflife,whichisacommonandsupremeauthority. Ithinkitisagoodthingto keeptothetraditionswelearned fromourparentsandespecially now.Whenwelookaroundus, readthenewspapers,wefeelthe elementarystuporoftheman whoemergesfromhisshelter afteranearthquakeoranairraidandseekstofindwhatis leftoffamiliarsurroundings.We are,sofaraswecansee,inthe presenceofaworldgeographicallyunmapped,asitwasforthe ancients,andoncertainpartsof themapwecanonlywrite"Here bedragons."Itisaworldwhich isnowforthefirsttimesince Christianity,extra-European,with itscentreofgravitycompletely shifted;andshiftedinsucha waythatAustraliacomesinto moreprominenceandmuchmore vitalimportance.Thecatastrophehastaughttheoldworld apessimismwhichwasnotin its19thcenturyprogramme.Our fathers,andweourselvesinour youth,believedinprogress,and thoughtthatthefutureheldin storeforussomegrandachievement,somepromisedland.Now wemaywellaskifthepromised landdidnotreallyexistinthe past.
Thiscatastrophe,theeffectsof whichonthepositionofAustraliawillbefoundtobeso greatastimeuncoversthehistoryofthefuture,hasplaced IrelandinanextraordinarypositioninEurope.Ishouldsayreplaced.For,toquotetheBritish "UniversityResearchSociety," itwastheIrishwhowere"the principalagentsintheevange- lisationandinstructionofrural Europe,andintheclearingof thevirginforestandthereclamationofthelandswhichhad goneoutofcultivationduring theconfusionfollowinguponthe Teutonicinvasions."Irelandhas nowbecome,inthedevelopment ofairtravelandtransporta landingstagefortrans-Atlantic airtrafficonthehigh-roadbetweenEuropeandtheUnited StatesofAmerica.When,recently,theShannonairportwas officiallydeclaredopenasthe world'sfirstcustom-freeairport, thevice-presidentandgeneral managerofAmericanOverseas Airlinessaidthat"ShannonairportistheairthresholdofEuropeanditisthetrans-Atlantic springboardtoNewfoundland, CanadaandtheUnitedStates."
Itwas,ithasbeensaid,oneof thetragediesoftheBritishoccupationofIrelandthatitcutus off weeksfromEurope.Speakingafew agoattheopeningofthe DutchairlinetoIreland,theMinisterforIndustryandCommerce,Mr.Lemass,re-echoed thesewordswhenhesaid:"For toolongaperiodinourhistory weinIrelandhavebeendeprived ofadequateopportunitiesfor contactswithEurope."

ReportsthatthebodyofDr. JosefTiso,executedpriest-PresidentofSlovakia.wasburied ac:ordingtotheritesoftheCathc,liicChurch,aredeniedininformationreachingLondonfrom aSlovakpatriotundergroundorganisation.
Asuspicionthatthebodywas crematedisnowbeinginvestigated,itissaid,followingdiscoveryofnothingbutsandin thecoffinsupposedtocontainthe. latePresident'scorpse.
Onthedayoftheexecution (April18),saysthereport, largecrowdsmaintainedwatch atthecourtbuilding,andatall theBratislavacemeteries,inor dertofindoutwheretheburial placewouldbe.Womenfrom Dr.Tiso'sownparishofBanovcewererefusedarequestthat thebodybeburiedthere.
At2.30a.m.onApril19acoffinwasbroughttoSt.Martin's Cemeteryand-withoutany clergyinattendance-wasloweredintoapreparedgrave, whichwashastilyfilledin.But bythemorningofApril20the wholecapitalknewaboutthis. Despitetheeffortsofmounted police,crowdsofpeopleassembledroundthegraveandcovereditwithflowers.Therewere somanypeoplethatmostof themcouldnotgetintothecemetery.
Onthefollowingnightuniversitystudentsopenedthegrave andexhumedthecoffin.They foundittobefilledwithsand andstones.Dr.Tiso'sbody,as theyhadsuspected,wasmissing.
TheSlovakpublic,addsthereport,believesthat,inspiteof officialstatementsthatDr.Tiso wasburiedaccordingtoCatholic rites,hisbodywassecretlycremated,probablyatBrno,Moravia.Thematterisbeinginvestigated.,Thereportalso asksthatforeignradioand newspapersshouldpressfora ,iommissionofinvestigationinto thecircumstancesoftheburial.

Dr.McKeefrywasadevoted servantofhispaperandahardworking(apostleoftheCatholic press.DissatisfiedwiththeNew ZealandPresscableservicesfor hisnewsoftheday,hewould oftenspendhours,evenwell aftermidnight,listeningto foreignshort-wavebroadcasts. HespeaksfluentItalianand Frenchandiscreditedwithmore thananaveragegraspofsome otherlanguages,judgingbyhis familiaritywiththenewsand propagandasessionsofmany continentalshort-wavestations beforethewar.
PeterThomasBertramMcKeefrywasbornatGreymouth onthefamous"westcoast"of thesouthislandofNewZealand, onSeptember1,1903.Heis nowforty-fouryearsofage.DescendedfromIrishimmigrant forebearswhosettledonthewest coastduringandafterthegold rushesofthenineteenthcentury, hewaseducatedbytheChristian Brothers,Dunedin,andentered HolyCrossCollege,Mosgiel,to studyforthepriesthood.His ecclesiasticalstudieswerecompletedatPropagandaCollege, Rome,wherehewasordainedat Easter,1926.Onreturningto NewZealand,hewasappointed privatesecretarytothelateBishopCleary,ofAuckland,andassistanteditorofthe"Month."
OnthedeathofBishopCleary, hebecameprivatesecretaryto hisLordshipBishopListon,and managingeditorof"Zealandia" in1934officeswhichhehasfilled withdistinctionfortheoastthirteenyears.FatherMcKeefry playedaleadingpartintheorganisationoftheCatholicCentenarycelebrationsofAuckland in1938,andistheauthorof "FishersofMen"(excerptsfrom thewritingsofBishopPompeiilierandearlyMaristmissionaries)publishedfortheoccasion.
SECRETARYANDEDITOR.
Dr.McKeefryhascombinedthe arduousofficesofBishop'ssecretaryandCatholiceditorforsome twentyyears,ataskwhichhas givenhimanunparalleledknowledgeofdiocesanadministration andNewZealandaffairs.When hearrivedinAuckland,fresh fromthelecturehallsofPropagandaCollege,Rome,hewas chosenbythelateBishopCleary, aremarkablejournalist,ashis privatesecretaryandassistantin theeditingofthe"Month."It hasbeenwrittenthatFather McKeefryfoundBishopClearya taskmasterwithlargeideas. Himselfarapidworker,withal practisedpen,Dr.Clearywas pronetoestimateothersbyhis ownhighstandards.Inconsenuence,the'privatesecretaryand journalistassistantsoonfound hisdaysonlytoofull.ThsBishop,likemanyanothermanof journalistictemperament,hada fondnessforworkatoddhours. Habitually,byprivilegegranted himbytheHolyFather,Dr. ClearycelebratedMassinhisprivatechapelatanextraordinary earlyhour.Thusitwasthathe wasabletoperformprodigiesof labourathisstudytable,during thosedarkquiethourswhenall theworldaboutlaysleeping. OftenFatherMcKeefrywould awakeinthemorningtofind sheavesofmanuscriptandinstructionsinmemorandumform pinnedtothecoverletofhisbed, orpiledunderapaper-weighton hsibedsidetable.

Withtheprogressof"Zealandia"camegrowthinstaffand newresponsibilitiesandnewproblems.Advertisingbecamemore andmoreimportant,astheexpandingpapermadeimperative demandsforfinancialsupport. FatherMcKeefry-foundthatwhat wasoncealmostwhollyajournalisticresponsibilitywasnowin largemeasureonethatcalled foracapacitytomakequickdecisionsonmanypoints,arising fromhourtohour,onmattersof apurelybusinessnature. ButDr.McKeefrydidnotallowtheworkofdirectionand admjnistrationtosilencehispen. Apartaltogetherfromeditorial directionandwriting,itcannow berevealedthatFatherMcKeefrywasthewriteroftheable andwidely-quotedcommentary, "ChaffandWheat,"whichappearedeveryweekontheback pageof"Zealandia"overthepennameof"TheSifter."Hislong yearsof"sifting"thenewsin thelightofCatholicprinciples hasequippedhimwithclear graspanddeepunderstandingof theproblemsoftheworldingeneralandofNewZealandinparticular,aprovidentialnovitiate, foranArchbishopofatwentieth centurymetropolitanSee.

Itwasmostedifyingtosee Legionarieskneelingbeforethe BlessedSacramentexposedfortheiradorationinthe"Lady Chapel."Throughouttheday theCathedralrangwiththe praisesofMaryaspraesidium followedpraesidiuminreciting theLegionprayers.Itwas theiroriginalintentiontohold thisthanksgivingfunctioninone ofthechurcheswheretheFortyHours'Prayerwasbeingheld.
However,theexpresswish ofHisGracewasthatthey should'havesomethingspecial, andhehimselfsuggestedthis dayofExposition.

Theywere,butinGod's Way.DuringthesummerPeter waswellenoughtogooutfor drives.Hislastoutingwasto Benediction,whenhewasenrolledintheBlessedSacrament Guildathisearnestrequest. Thenhegotrapidlyworse.His painting,forwhichhehadgreat talent,hadtobegivenup,quietly,bravely,withoutamurmur.
"It'snouse,Mother,dear-I can'tpaintanymore."Ashis sufferingsincreased,sodidhis thoughtforothers.Afewhours beforehisdeathhetriedtoper- suadehismothertogoandrest. Hehadalreadyaskedpardonfor "allthetrouble"hehadgiven,as wellasforthe"extrawork" causedbyhisillness. Hewastenyearsandtwo monthsoldwhen,onSeptember 15,1933,GodtookHislittleMissionertoHeaven.Faithfulto theend,Peter'slastconscious wordswere:

RobertFultonwasapainterofdiscouraged. portraits,borninPennsylvania in1765,andhesetoutforEnglandin1786,inorderthathe mightstudyunderSirBenjamin West.Hebecameacquainted withRumsey,anotherAmerican inEnglandatthetime,whohad spentalotofhistimeexperimentingwithboats.Afterdiscussinghisexperimentswith him,hegaveupallthoughtof painting.Fulton'sbrainteemedwithideas.Heinvented thingsfortheimprovementof canals,forcuttingandpolishing marble,fortwistingrope,for ironbridges,forspinningflax, fordredgingrivers,andfor makingboatsgounderwater andblowupships.Butthe greatworkof'hislifewasindevelopingthesteamship.
In1802hebuiltasteamshipin France,withanenginesoheavy thatitfellthroughthebottom ofthevesselintotheRiver Seine,wherehewastryingit. Heevenproposedasteamnavy toNapoleon,butnothingcameof it-andthankfulwemaybethat Francehadnosteamnavyat Trafalgar!ButFultondidnot loseheart,butrecoveredtheengineandbuiltitintoastronger boat.Thishemadetogo,but itwastooslowtobesuccessful. ComingbacktoEngland,hepreparedplansandhadanengine builtbyBoultonandWatt.Then hewenttoAmericaandhadthe enginesentoverpackedina ship.Theinventorofthose dayswasviewedbythepublic witheithercarelessnessorcontempt,butFultonpersevered.
Atlastthisbraveman'sship wasbuilt,andsetoutwithpassengersforatrialtrip.The vesselmovedoffalittleway, thenstopped.Everybodybut Fultonthoughtthiswastheend -thathehadfailedastheyall hadexpected.Buthewentbelowandputrightsometrifling mishap,andtheboatsteamed awaywhilethepeopleweresay- ing:"Itoldyouthatitwouldbe so;afoolishscheme;Iwishwe weresafelyoutofit."Thevesselwentitsway,ajourneyof 150milesin32hours.Fulton wasdelighted,buthisfriends stilldoubted;theythoughtthe vesselwouldneverbeabletoget hacktoNewYork,andthatif
