A.:Supernatural,asitisused intheology,meanswhatisabove nature,whatagivennaturehas norighttodemand.Different kindsofcreatureshavedifferent natures,somenaturesbeing higherandnoblerthanothers. Thuswhatmightbeanatural poweroranaturalachievement foronekindofcreaturewouldbe abovethenatureofanother.For instance,itisnaturalformanto expresshisthoughtsinwords, andthustoexchangeideaswith othermen.Thatisnotnatural forahorse;suchafacilityisin nowise"due"toequinenature. Similarly,itisconceivablethat someactivitywhichisabove man'spowersmightbenatural tosomehigherkindofcreature suchasanangel.

Whenwelookintothematter morecloselywefindthatwehave todistinguishtwokindsofsupernaturalness.Somethingsare sodivinethattheyarenot"due" toanycreature,howevernoble icsnature;norcantheybeeachievedbythenaturalpowersof anycreature,norevenbythe powersofallcreationputtogether.Suchthingsaresupernaturalinthefullestsenseof theword;theyareaboveall creatednature.Anexample wouldbetheimmediatevisionof GodasHeisinHimself.

THECATHOLICANSWER

oftheWesternChurch,itwas understoodbythecongregation. Thatwas,infact,thereasonfor itsintroduction.Beforethat time,eveninRomeitself,thelanguageusedintheliturgywas Greek,whichthenwasthemost generallyunderstoodlanguagein theRomanEmpire.Untilthe middleofthethirdcenturythe ChristiancommunityatRome wasGreek,andtheapologists andtheologianswroteinGreek untilthetimeofSt.Hippolytus, whodiedin235.Itwasmuch thesameinGaul,atLyons,and atVienna,atalleventsuntilthe daysofSt.Irenaeus.InAfrica, Greekwasthechosenlanguage oftheclericstobeginwith,but Latinwasthemorefamiliar speechforthemajorityofthe faithful,anditmusthavesoontakentheleadintheChurch,since Tertullian,whowrotesomeof hisearlierworksinGreekfinishedbywritinginLatinonly. Inthisusehewasprecededby PopeVictor,whowasalsoanAfrican,andwhowas,asSt.Jeromeassuresus,theearliest ChristianwriterintheLatinlanguage.Soyoumaysaythat thechangeovertoLatinwasoriginallyautilitarianmeasure. Thereisstillaverydefinite utilityinretainingLatinforthe servicesoftheChurch.That body,asyouknow,hasaworldwideextension.HenceitisfittingthatthecentralactofCatholicworship,theSacrificeof theMass,shouldbecelebratedin thenearestthatwehavetoa universallanguage.Evenat present,Latinisthelanguage thatisunderstoodbythegreat- estnumberofpeople.Ishould add,ofcourse,thatthereare branchesoftheChurchinunion withRomewhichcelebrateMass inlanguagesotherthanLatin. longingtotheMaronites,where thelanguageusedisSyriacor Arabic.

Asregardstheabilityofthe congregationtounderstandLatin, thatwill,ofcourse,varyfrom placetoplace.Inanordinary parishchurchinanEnglish speakingcountrytherewould probablynotbemanywhocould understandspokenLatin,noris thatreallynecessary.TheMass issomethingquitedifferentfrom aprayermeeting.Theessential elementintheMassistheofferingofasacrifice,whichisprimarilyanaction,i.e.something donebypriestandpeople.The congregationunderstandswhat istakingplacewithoutactually followingthewordswhichare used.Thewords,insuchanaction,arenecessary,buttheyare subsidiary.Inordertotake partinwhatishappeningitis sufficienttoassentinwardlyto theactionthatisbeingperformed.

Anincreasinglylargeproportionofthecongregationwillbe famliar, atleastinageneral way, wththemeaningofthe variousprayersrecitedintheinvariablepartoftheMassbythe priest.Inrecenttimesthere hasbeenarevivalofinterest amongthefaithfulinthedetails oftheceremoniesperformedat thealtararidtheprayersthat areusedintheseceremonies. In theprayerbooksusedatMass, andparticularlyintheMissal usedbyalargeandincreasing numberof translationsthelaity, thereare oftheseprayers. Henceifone'sdevotionliesin thatdirection, thereisnogreat difficultyinbecomingacquainted withthewordsusednordoesthe useoftheLatinlanguageconstituteanyverygreatobstacle.

Ithinkitisfairtosaythatthe obviousadvantagesofhavinga universallanguageforthese prayersoutweightheproblemati- caladvantagesthatsomeenthusiaststhinkwouldfollowfrom theintroductionofthevernacularintotheliturgy.
