DYNAMICCHRISTIANITY.
Wemustbearinmindthat Christianityissomethingpositiveanddynamic.Wearecalledtobeapostles,soldiersof Christ.Weshouldbeburning withzealtospreadOurLord's kingdom.Wehaveanapostolatebeforeusandwemustrememberthatitisimpossibleto hegoodunlesswedogood.Faith withoutgoodworksisdead.the HolyScriptureremindsus.Ours mustbeapositivefaith-afaith thatradiatesChristaroundusso thatpeoplecanseeChristin andthroughus.Itisnotenough toabstainfromevil.Wemust dogood.

HowmanyofouryoungCatholicpeopleprefertojoinanon Catholicorganisation,rather thanoneoftheirown,wherenot onlycouldtheyenjoythemselvesaswell,butatthesametime advancethekingdomofGod.

How aboutourdailyRosary,dowe oftenforgetit?Dowepop intothechurchforavisittoor fromwork?Thesearequestionswhichweshouldanswer, andiftheanswerisinthenegative,thenweshouldexamine ourselvesastothecauseofour slackness.Ithinkthatifwe didsowewouldfindthatthe causeofmost,ifnotall,our slacknesswasduetothissinof spiritualsloth.
Letushavealwaysbeforeour eyestheexampleofGod,whois notonlycontinuallyengagedin preservingournaturallife,but alsoinprocuringbysomany meanstheeternallifeofourimmortalsouls.

Itwasafineshow.Thestory wasinteresting,theproduction smooth,andtheactinggood.
Thenameisallegorical,referringtoamotherandsonofthe leisuredclasswho,beingsudden. lydeprivedoftheirwealth,are reluctanttobedeprivedalsoof theirleisure,andseektoretain itattheexpenseofanyonethey canswindleordupeforafew pounds.Whentheplayopens theseparasitesarenon-paying guestsofaboutfourweeks' standingattheBurkefarmhouseinSussex,where,normally,lodgersaretakenin.Theactionthatensuesismuchenlivenedbytheunexpectedintrusionof Syd.Fish,ashrewdbutlikeable Cockney,whograduallypullsthe threadsoftheplotintoaplausiblepattern-plausible,butnot highlyfeasible.

Burke'swife,Sarah,wasnot drawnsowellbyMayRobinson; therewaslackingthatsenseof compatabilitywitholdSamuel whiledifferingfromhiminthe matterofthefolderols.Asit was,thesetwojustdidn'tlook likemanandwife,andonepre-
ferstodismissthepointasan errorofcastingratherthanimputemuchblametotheactress. Onecanonlythinkhowperfectly Mrs.Cox,oftheRepertoryClub, wouldhavefittedintotherole.

Whileitshowsthecomposerasa youngmanverymuchunderthe influenceofMozart,repeated hintsaregivenofthecoming FifthSymphonyandthegigantic Beethovenofthelaterworks. HenriKrippsimpartedtothe symphonygreatspiritand warmth,andtheorchestra'sresponsewasworthyofunqualified praise. Ifonlyenoughpeoplecouldbe madetofeelthatitwouldbe worthagOod'dealofsacrificeto makesuchmusicapermanent partofourlives,howeasily wouldalltheobstaclesinthe wayofapermanentorchestrabe rolledaway.Butthen,ofcourse, evenapermanentorchestrawould needamanofthecalibreof Kripstoproducesuchnobleresults.

ThehighlightofHisGrace's visitwastheopeningofanew ChurchatBurracoppin.Sunday, May18,wasamemorableday fortheCatholicsofBurracoppin andWalgoolandistricts,when HisGracesolemnlyblessedand officiallyopenedthenewChurch ofOurLadyoftheSacredHeart atBurracoppin.HolyMass wascelebratedbyRev.Father Holohan,atwhichHisGracepresided,andaddressedthecongregation.
TheBurracoppinChurchwas originallyabankpremises.Ideallyadaptableasachurch,bothexteriorilyandinteriorilv,itwas purchasedbytheCatholicsofthe districtwiththeideaofconvertngitintoalittlechurchforthe district.Lackofmaterialsand skilledlabourdelayedtheoperationsfortwelvemonths.Then, ataspecialmeetingofthepeopleofthedistrict,themenof thedistrictdecidedtotacklethe taskontheirownunderthesupervisionofFatherHolohan. Afteraseriesof"busybees"the necessaryrenovationsandpaintingoftheexteriorandinterior wasgraduallyaccomplished.No skilledlabourwasemployed,and alltheworkwasvoluntarilycarriedout,sothatthecostwas veryreasonable.
AfterHolyMass,HisGrace, addressingthecongregation, saidthatitwasindeedagreat privilegeforthemtohavetheir ownchurchabuildingsolelydedicatedforGod'suse.Only necessitydemandedtheuseof publichallsforMassincountry districts,andeveryonerealised theincongruity,butcouldnot avoidit.TheMass,although thesamesacrificenomatter whereoffered,didnotseemthe sameinahallasinachurch.The atmosphereforrealdevotionwas lackingandhadadetrimental effectonthechildren.Thelittlechurchwouldbeagreatinspirationtothechildrenespecially,whowouldgainadeeper knowledeeandreverenceforthe HolySacrificeoftheMasswhen offeredupinGod'sownHouse onaproperaltarwitheverythingsurroundingitinkeeping withthedignityoftheMass.His GracespokeonthegreatexcellenceoftheMassanditsvital importanceinthelifeofaCatholic,andhestronglyexhorted narentstobeconstantandfaithfulintheirattendanceatMass andtheSacramentsaswell,That wastheirgraveresponsibilityas guardiansofGod'schildren.
HisGracealsospokeonthe HolyRosary.HehasjustdedicatedtheirlittlechurchtoOur LadyoftheSacredHeart.In dedicatingthechurch,HisGrace appealedstronglytoeveryoneto befaithfultotheRosary,and, aboveall,tokeepintactthe grandtraditionofthefamily Rosaryitthehome.
HisGracealsospokewordsof warningaboutthemenaceand dangerofCommunism,whose sloganwasthatreligionwasthe opiumofthepeople,andwhose aimwastodestroyeverything webelievedandhopedin.The presenceofthischurch,saidHis Grace,inyourmidst,andthe sacrificesyouhavemadetoput itthere,andthoseyouaregoing tomaketokeepitthere,isa patentproofthatthegoodpeopleofthisdistrictdonotsubscribetotheirfalseideology.

Althoughthepositionofthe Churchwillnotbeaffectedby thenewpoliticalset-up,itis fearedbysomethatthewith. drawaloftheBritishnextyear maybefollowedbysomedisorderswhichmaybeinjuriousto Catholics.However,thisfear isoffsetbytheopinionsofmost observerswhoholdthatIndia alreadyhaswitnesseditsmost seriousdisturbancesintheHindu-Moslemriotsofthepastfew months,andthattheactual transferofGovernmentwillbe peacefulandorderly,unless,of course,theBritishshoulddelay incarryingoutthetransfer,in whichcasetherewouldbereally serioustrouble.

Duringthousandsofmilesof travelthroughoutnorthernand centralIndia,FatherHubbard andIreceivedthemostcourteoustreatmentfromIndianpeopleandgovernmentofficials. Onlyoncedidwehavethe"Quit India"sloganthrownatusand thatwasinPatnabyuniversity students,whoashorttimebeforehadbooedevenPandit JawaharlalNehru.
Comewhatmay.Europeanand AmericanCatholicmissionaries havenottheslightestintention ofquittingIndia.Manyof themareaseagerforafree IndiaastheIndiansthemselves. TheypointoutthatwiththeterminationofBritishrulethesuspicionofthecommonpeople againstallEuropeanswillberemoved.
OnlywhentheBritishleave andtheChurchremainswillthe distinctionbecleartoall. CongressleadersandeducatedIndiansingeneralhaveal-
waysbeenabletomakethisdistinction.Theyinventedthe "QuitIndia"sloganandthey havealwaysrestricteditsapplicationtotheBritishrulers.Now thattheIndiansthemselvesare abouttotakeovertheresponsioilitiesofrulingtheirvastcountry,theyaremoreanxiousthan everfortheCatholicmissionariestoremain,sothattheycan continuetheirgreatcontribution toIndianeducationandsocial work.Catholicschoolshereare manyandfamous.Curtailment oftheiractivitieswouldbea seriousblowtothecountry's educationalsystem.

Perhapsthemostoutstanding evidenceIwitnessedoftheconfidenceofthemissionariesin thefutureoftheChurchinthe newIndianRepublicwasat PatnainBihar.wheretheAmericanJesuitsfromChicagoare working.BiharisthestrongestCongressProvinceinthe wholecountry.Itwasherethat Gandhibeganhisagitation whichhasatlengthledtothe presentprospectofcomplete freedom.Withtheactiveencouragementandfinancialhelp oftheCongressGovernment,the DioceseofPatnaisundertaking itsgreatestbuildingprogramme.
InPatnaCity,thecapital,Isaw underconstructionthebeautiful newbuildingsofthePatnaWomen'sCollege,operatedbythe ApostolicCarmelSisters(Indian).Thenewbuildingswill accommodate500studentswith 200inresidence.Workhas alsobegunona500-bedhospitalfortheMedicalMissionSistersofFoxChase,Philadelphia, whohavedonesplendidworkat theirpresentlocationinanother partofthecity.
Thisbuildingprogrammeis beingundertakenatatimewhen thereisgreattensionthrough. outthewholeprovincedueto Hindu-Moslemriotswhichhave resultedinthedeathofthousands.TheAmericanJesuits, however,believeinthefutureof thenewIndia,andthereisevery evidencethattheirfaithiswellfounded.

TheCatholicChurchhasdeeperrootsinRussiathantheworld has'beenledtobelieve.For yearspastithasbeenthecustomtodescribetheRectorof Moscow'sChurchofSt.Louisof theFrenchastheonlyCatholic priestpermittedtoworkinRussia.NowtheRectorhimself hasrevealedthatatleastthree otherpriestsare,withouthindnines.,carryingouttheirministryinotherpartsofthecountry andtheprsisinilityisthatthere maybemore.
Thepriestskr,owntobeat workareinLeningrad,Tiflisand Zytomir.Eaci.ofthepriests hasaphs:erly-eiectedparish, whosemembersattendregular ssrvisesintheirchurches.The churchinLeningradisdedicated. toOurLadyofFrance.Althoogliitusswithoutapastor frosithemiddleof1941untilthe endoflastyerai.theparishioners assembledintlechurchfor prayerseachSundayandholyday. sicchursh'scustodian duringthisperiodwasMme. Souchal,an80-year-oldFrenchwoman,whomadeitpartofher apostolatetobaptisethenewlyborninfants.
DuringthesiegeofLeningrad, Mme.Souchal,ignoringalike shells,bombs,andthestrictlyenforcedcurfew,wasafamiliarfigureinthestreetsasshemade herwaytothechurchtokeep watchoverit.Shediedlast yearattheageof85,having shortlybeforehadtheconsolationofseeingtheparishunder thecareofanewpriest.The newRectorwassuppliedbythe ArchbishopofAigaandtheSotvient.authoritiesraisednoobjection.
ThefourknownCatholicparishesinRussiamaybeincreasedshortlytofivebytheaddition ofoneinOdessa.TheOdessa parishactuallyexists-itwasestablishedforthePolishcommunnity-butithasnopriest.As wasthecaseinLeningrad,itis inthechargeofawoman,officiallynamean"overseer."This womanisnownegotiatingwith theSovietauthoritiesforpermissiontohaveapriestappointed and,inviewofMoscow'sCatholiccircle,herapplicationwill shortlybegranted.
Moscowitselfuntil1939also hadaPolishparishwitharesidentpriest,whowas,nodoubt, internedwhentheSoviettroops invadedEasternPoland.
inthatrespectisobtainingareasonablenumberofbooks.
"Furthermore,thepriest's apartmentshouldbenearerto thechurch.Mineisalmosttwo milesaway.Myfoodallowance, nowequaltothatofaclerkat theEmbassy,could,Ifeel,be increasedwithoutimpairingthe principleofseparationofChurch andState.
"Thesepoints,however,donot offer,inmyestimation,anyinsuperabledifficulties,especially consideringthefriendlyattitude oftheSovietauthoritiestowards me."
IfFatherLaberge'sdispatch suggestsanewconciliatoryattitudeoftheSovietauthoritiestowardsCatholicism.anothercurrenteyewitnessreportwilltend toreversetheimpression.

Well!Weaskyou!!Howlongarewegoingto standforthis?Ifthe"WestAustralian,"oranyother paperforthatmatter,wishestolaunchanattackorthe Church,letthemcomeoutintotheopenandnothidebehindacloakofanonymity.Letthemstatetheirfacts and,iftheycan,provetheircase;then,andthenonly,will theybeworthyofreceivinganyconsiderationatour hands.
Itstrikesusassurpassinglystrangethat,atatimewhen BritainandAmericaaresoseriouslyperturbedoverRussia'smountingimperialisminEasternEurope,therecan befoundinourmidstsupposedlyresponsiblemenwilling tofurthertheplotsoftheKremlinbyeverystrategmof lyingjournalism.Itisevenmoreoddthatsoconservativeanorganasthe"WestAustralian"wouldlendits columnstosuchinspiredwriting.
AtatimewhenaformerU.S.AmbassadortoMoscowisassuringtheworldthatonlythesuperiorityofthe AmericanairforceandAmericanpossessionoftheatomic bombpreventsStalinfromorderingtheRedArmytooccupyallEurope,somewretchedsmall-timescribblerin Londonthinksitopportunetosneeratthenationwhich .gaveBolshevismitsonlymajorcheck.Franco,during theyears1936-39,savedEuropeandAfricafromCommunism,andnoamountofinsensatehatepropagandacancircumventthatfact.Norcananyoneto-daydenythat Spainistheonlysoundorganinthedecomposingbodyof Europe.
ThedefenceofSpaindoesnotimplyendorsementof everyparticularofSpanishsocialpractice,economicor politicallifeanymorethanthe-defenceofthedemocratic regimesimpliesacceptanceofallthefolliesofliberal Capitalism.TheBishopofBarcelona,whorecentlytouredtheUnitedStates,laidsomeemphasisonaspectsof Spanishsocialandpolitcallifethatbadlyneedimprovement.Francohimself,inarecentinterviewwithMr. ConstantineBrown,ofthe"WashingtonPost,"freelyadmittedSpain'sproblems,butclaimedveryjustlythat"we mustresolveourownproblemstoourowntasteandin accordancewithourownlaw weareanancientand civilised.peoplewhichhasrenderedtoomanyandtoo greatservicestotakekindlytobeingtreatedwithsuch injustice."

Eachdeskrepresentedahome andeachaisleastreet.After thepupilsbecamecitizensofthe town,theyelectedamayor,town clerk,treasurer,andassessor.The mayorthenappointedachiefof policeandthreemembersforthe policeforce.Apoliceforcewas requiredbecausetherewerelaws tobeobeyed.Theselawswere madebythecitizensofCloverdaleduringtheirfirstmeeting.A violatorofthelawwasgivena warrantforarrestwhichrequestedhispresenceatcourton agivendate.Afterlaws,positions,andbusinessforthetown weresettled,thecitizensturned theirattentiontotheestablishmentofacreditunion.AnofficerfromtheWestphaliaCredit Unionwasaskedtoleadadiscussiononcreditunionsingen- eral.
ThecitizensofCloverdaleearnedthemoneytocarry,onthe businessofthetownandthesavingforthecreditunion.Salariesforpositions,commissions toagentswhosoldproperty, cleaningafterschoolhours,and paymentforneatpapersandextraworkwereitems,among others,forwhichtheyreceived remuneration.Theywerepaid bytheweekbythepaymaster whoreceivedthemoneyfromme. (Irepresentedthetreasury.We usededucationaltoymoney.)The creditunionwindowwasnextto thetownmembersusuallystoppedtodeposittheirsavings.
OurCreditUnionoperatedosi thesamebasisasrealcredit unions.We,too,hadaboardof directors,asupervisorycommittee,andacreditcommittee.Each citizenpaidhisinitialsumof 25c.andboughta5.00dollar share,whichentitledhimtomake loansandtovoteatthegeneral meetings.
Thetownassessorvaluedthe townproperty.Hedrewthetown accordingtoscaleandpostedthe assessedandrealvalueofthe property.Assoonasahome (desk)wasboughtwiththehelp ofaloanorotherwise,thepurchaserpaidtax,whilebeforehe wasarenter.Ifheboughta homeinwhichsomeoneelselived(sat)hereceivedrentaslandlord.Manytaxationproblems arosewhichweresolvedinarithmeticclasses.Theproblems, youmaybesure,becamereallife problems.
Attheendoftheyearthetreasurermadeoutherreportand dividendsweregivenoutaccordingtothetotalamountofsound loans.Theindividualshareholderdidnotreceivemuch,but thatmadefortherealisationthat thepurposeofacreditunionis tohelpmakeeasyandsmall loansratherthantomakelarge dividends.
Asafinaltie-up,theCloverdalecitizensmadetworealloans fromtheWestphaliaCredit Union.Oneloanwasaproductiveloanwhichwasusedtostart apotatopatchproject.Land wasrentedandanear-byfarmer washiredtoploughtheground. Thepupilsboughtthepotatoes fromtheco-operativestore,cut them,andplantedthem.For scientificinvestigation,theydividedtheirplotintofourlarge
portions.Ononeportion,hatcheryfertiliserwasspread,on anotherpotash,onathirda heavylayerofstraw,butthe fourthplotwasleftfreefrom anyfertilisingagent.Eachdivision,headedbyachairman,had sixorsevenmembers.During thesummermonths,eachcommitteehadtokeepuphisportionoftheplot.Nowthisfall, inafewdays,wewillgetoutof thepatch,digthepotatoesand sackthem.Theywillbehandled ontheco-operativebasis,andthe profitsrealisedfromthesales willbeusedforschoolpurposes. Afullprogrammehadbeen previouslyarranged,andonSundaymorningtennisandhandball tournamentswereplayed.The handballchampionshipfinalists, BrotherJohnandB.Lardi,were enabletoplayoutthefinalowingtothelatterhavingtoleave forPerthearly.Thetennisfinals werewonbyJ.RoderfromM. Flynn,6-3,6-3,intwosets.

Thatthequantityofapopulationcanbecutdownbythe meanssuggestedisobviousbecausetheyallstrikeatthechild. Theypreventhisconceptionby artificialmeans.Theymaim humanbeingsthroughsterilisation,therebyrobbingthemof theircapacitytobegetchildren. Theymurderbeforetheirbirth thosechildrenwhohavesuccessfullyrunthegauntletof theirenemiesofthecontraceptiveandsterilisingworlds.

Theeffectivenessofthese meanstocutbirthratesisvery evidentintheWesternWorld wherethesepracticesareconnivedatandevenencouraged. Though"birthcontrol,"astin. derstoodto-day,isscarcelymore thanaquarterofacenturyold, ithasalreadywroughtunbelievablehavocwiththepopulations ofWesternnations.

Whileasterilisationprogrammewouldprovefutilewith regardtoitsproposedobjectives, itwould,ontheotherhand,do muchharm.Forexample,it wouldleadtoanincreaseinimmoralityandsocialdiseases. ThePope,ofcourse,wasright. To-day,aftersevenhundred years,St.AnthonyofPaduais stilltheworld'sfavouritesaint. Gointotheclassicalcathedrals ofEuropeancitiesorthelowly waysidechurches.orvisitthe lonelymissionarybut-.anywhere,everywhere,andthereyou willfindthewell-knownbrownrobedfigurewiththenowfamiliarsandals,cowlandcordthat betokenasonofSt.Francis. FinderofLostThings.
Smallboys,ofcourse,willkeep onforeverlosingthethousandand-onethingsthatarethenecessarystockintradeofanormaysmallboy'sexistence-it maybeapocket-knifeoranindispensablenail.Andsuppose thesameistrueofthemodern young"miss"whowillwantthe correspondingnecessitiesofher younglife.Whatablessingto harriedmothersandfathers,but particularlytomothers,thatGod inHisinfinitegoodnessvery thoughtfullyandunderstandinglyfoundawayoutofthedifficulties!Aprayertothelovable saintofPadua,andheighpresto! hereistheshiningpocket-knife thatcausedallthetrouble,and thereisthebrokendoll'shead smilingandreadytobegluedon again.Itwasinsuchapredicamentthatthewriterofthispamphlet,thenasmallboyoffive, madethesuccessfulacquaintance ofthefinderoflostthings.
Andsincelosingthingsisnot merelyaweaknessofchildhood, itisonlytobeexpectedthatthe helpfulsaintofPaduaisstill busylookingforGranny'sneedlesorGrandfather'sspecs.Indeed,hisfieldseemstobeunlimited.Theworriedofficial takeshimintopartnershipto searchforthatimportantmissing document,whiletheharassed student,fearingofforgetfulness, looksconfidentlyforthatheavenlyhelpthatcanmeansomuchto frayednervesintheordealofexaimnation.Infact,theChurch herselfhasactuallyindulgenced aspecialprayertoSt.Anthiny forsuccessinstudies.AsI writethesewords,aone-timegolf enthusiast(nowavenerablereligious)assuresmethatwhenit comestofindinglostgolfballs St.Anthonyhasnorival.PerhapstheCaledonianGolfClub willyetmakehimitspatron.

Many,indeed,ofthosewho havebenefitedbyhishelpknow littleoftheinterestingstoryof hislife.Itishopedthatthis briefbiographywillmakehim stillmorerealandmorelovable. Tomanywhohavelongknown thebrown-robedsaintofPadua itwill,perhaps,comeasasurprisetolearnthathewasnot alwaysamemberoftheFranciscanOrder.Infact,hewas alreadyordainedpriestwhenhe enrolledunderthebannerofthe LittlePoorManofAssisi.Then hisnamewasnotAnthony,but Ferdinand.Thename,Anthony, camewithhisbecomingaFranciscan.Besides,hewasnota nativeofPadua,whichtownin Italyisforeverassociatedwith hisnameandfameashislast restingplace.HewasaPortugueseandbelongedtoLisbon. Greatestshockofalltothose whowouldpicturetheyouthful saintisthefactthathetipped thebalancesomewhereroundsixteenstone.Hereisthestory: AChildofMary.
HewasbornontheFeastof OurLady'sAssumption,August 15,1195,inthecityofLisbon, inPortugal.Hewasthesonof DomMartinandTheresa(leBouillon.Thefatherwasanoblemanattachedtothecourtofthe KingofPortugal.BothparentswereexemplaryCatholics, excellingintheirservicetothe poor.InbaptismthechildreceivedthenameofFerdinand.
Oneofhisearliestbiographerstellsusthat"fromhisearliestyouththelittleFerdinand hadforhisteacher,Mary,who whotobehissupportinlifeand death."Hisboyhood'sveryreal andlivingdevotiontotheBlessedVirginisnottobewondered at,sinceweareinformedthat amonghismother'scrooning cradlesongsweresuchhymnsto OurLadyasthe"0GloriosaVirginum."To-day,unfortunately, insteadofthegrandoldcanticles oflovetoMary,thedawning sensesofthemodernchildhave tobesatisfiedwiththelatest "hit"fromHollywood.NowondertheFaithgrowsweak.

Aswasthecustominthose days,hiseducationwasconfided tothepriestsoftheEpiscopal schoolnearhishome.Herethe usualelementarystudieswere supplementedbyacoursein Latinandsacredmusic.Very littlemoreisknownabouthis boyhoodyears,exceptthatin abouthisfifteenthyearsome mysterioustemptationcamehis way.Whateveritwas,the youth,Ferdinand,knewwherethe secretofself-conquestlay.It isrelatedthatoneday,perhaps whenthestrugglewasparticularlyviolent,Ferdinandsought protectionatthefeetofhisheavenlyMotheratheraltarinthe Cathedral.Itissaidthata miracleattestedtohisstruggle withthespiritofevilwhowas puttoflightbythesignofthe Cross,andthesignisstilltobe seenonthecoldmarbleofthe altarwhereheprayer.

Thisweekwearecommencing thestoryofAnthonyofPadua, whoseFeastiscommemoratedon June13.Wewillnotbeableto followthelifeofthisextraordinarySaintindetail;infactwe willonlybeabletoscratchthe surface.Therefore,Iwantto takethisopportunityofremindingyouthatSt.Anthonyisthe world'sfavouriteSaint.That mayseemabigclaimtomake, forafteryouhavereadsomethingofhislifeIthinkyouwill agreethatSt.Anthonycommendshimself(notthathewantedto)inaspecialwaytopeople ofeveryclassandcountry.You areprobablyalreadyfamiliar withtheinitialsS.A.G.whichappearonthebacksofsomany letters.Theymean,ofcourse, "St.Anthonyguide."Thisisa customwhichhasarisenbecause St.Anthonyisspeciallyconnectedwithkeepingthingssafe.If youlosesomethinghewillfind itforyou,andwhenyouhavegot ithewillkeepitsafe.Heis knownasapatronofyouth,and isapowerfulhelptoyouatex-
aminationtime.Somanywonderfulmiracleswereworkedby him,andGodshowedHislove forAnthonyissuchunmistakableways,thatlessthanayear afterhisdeathhewascanonised.Hewasamosteloquent preacher,andsometimeafter hisdeath,whenhiscoffinwas opened,hisfleshhadgoneinto dustbuttheSaint'stonguewas foundstillfreshandruddy.Jt wassaidofhimthatsomany miraclesaccompaniedhimwhereverhewentthatitwouldhave seemedreallyamiracleifnone hadoccurred.

Thenextsteplaywiththe menofthemotor-engine.Betweenballoonsandaeroplanes camethemenwhoriskedtheir livesbyconstructingplanesand throwingthemselvesoffwallsand buildingsandcliff-faces,and glidingtoearthliketheso-called flyinganimals. Amanwould beginbylaunchinghimselfoffa bankthreefeethighandplaningacrosshislawn,andwould endbyskimmingdownfroma house-top.
Theinventorofthefirstaeroplane,theheart-brokenmanwho neverknewofhissuccess,was SamuelPierpontLangley,abrilliantAmericanscientist,born
notgazeuponthe withdrewintothe
Newsofthisgreatsuccesswas receivedwithmingledrapture anddisbelief.ToLangleyit seemedthathistaskwas ended Hewasascientist,anddesired nofinancialgain.Thecommercialworldcouldcarryonifit wished.Therethematterrestedforsomeyears,whenLangleywaspersuadedtotryamancarryingaeroplane.Hemade onein1903,which,withitsengine,weighed125pounds.He couldthinkofnobetterwayof launchingitthanofstarting fromtheroofofthesamehouseboatasbefore,andsoitwasall arranged.Butthencameasad mishap,Atthefatalmoment in1834atRoxbury,inMassasomethingwentwrongwiththe chusetts.He,firstofallinven-startingmechanism,causingthe tors,triedtogetaheavier-thanairmachineflyingindependently. Hisplanwasinoppositiontothe mightlyauthorityofSirIsaac Newton.Manytrialsshowed himthatanenginewillcarrya largerweightat20milesan hourthanat10milesanhour, andastilllargerweightat40 milesthanat20.
Inplainlanguage,thefaster youmovefromplacetoplacein theairthebetterwillbeyour supportfromthebodyoftheatmospherebeneaththemachine; thelongeryouremaininone placethegreateristhelikelihoodofyourtopplingdown;or, inotherwords,ifyoutravel quicklyyoucancarrygreater loadswithsafetythanifyou travelslowlyandriskafailure ofsupportfromtheairbeneath.
Numberlesswerethetestsand experimentstriedbyProfessor Langleybeforeatlast,onMay6, 1896,hewentoutwithhisfriend, Dr.GrahamBell,thetelephone inventor,andlaunchedamodel fromthetopofahouse-boat mooredontheRiverPotomac. Thefirstpower-drivenaeroplane weighedonly25pounds.Ithad awing-spanof13feet,itwas drivenbyalittlesteam-engine, anditflew!
Itwasthemostdramaticmomentinthehistoryofflight,and thenventorwassoexcitedthat
aeroplanetoplungeintothe river.Ficklepubiicopinionturnedagainstthehaplessinventor, andpouredridiculeuponhim. Thevictoryof1896wasswallow. edupinthedefeatof1903. Langleyutterednocomplaint, buthewenthomeandsaidtoa friend:"Mylife'sworkisa failure."Hediedin1906,leavinghismachinelyingasacuriosityinhisworkshopattheSmithsonianInstitutioninWashington, whereLangleywasaprofessor. In1914hisoldpupilsbrought outtheoldaeroplaneandfitted floatstoit,likethoseofamodernseaplane.ThentheylauncheditonthePotamac;apilot tookhisseatinit;theenginewas started,thepropellerhummed, theaeroplanescuddedforalittle way,andthenroseandflewlike abird!
