Arestrictedflowofimmigra-tionfromEnglandwillsoon start.Sincetheannouncement ofMarch1st.asthecommencementdateoftheMigration AgreementbetweentheCommonwealthandBritishGovernments, manypeoplehavelodgednominationsofrelativesandfriends, andallspaceonthefirstship hasalreadybeenfilled.The dateofsailingofthefirstship tocarrymigrantsisexpectedto beannouncedatanytime.This shipwillbecarryingpeoplewho havedefiniteaccommodationto cometo,aswellasanoccupation orpositiontofill.

TheCatholicEpiscopalMigrationandWelfareAssociation, comprisedoftheArchbishopand BishopsoftheState,andaSecretariat,hasestablishedanoffice inPerth,fromwhichallpreliminaryarrangementshavenow been'completedforthefirstbatch ofchildmigrantstocometo WestAustralianInstitutions. Chiefinterestcentresinthese juveniles,butenquirieshave beenveryheavyinLondonfrom adultsandmarriedpersonsinaddition.

Bro.P.A.Conlon,whowas suchatowerofstrengthatTarduninplacingtheChristianBrothers'Schemeonasoundfootingafterthewarof1914.18,in settlingthefirstlotofboysto comeoutfromEngland(in193s) andgenerallyconsolidatingthis SchemeinitiatedbyBro.P.

NewGeneralof Redemptorist Fathers

OnMay1,theGeneralChapteroftheRedemptoristFathers, assembledinRome,electedMost Rev.Fr.LeonardBuys,C.SS.R., asGeneraloftheCongregation, insuccessiontoMostRev.Father PatrickMurray,whoresignedhis officeonaccountofill-health.The newFatherGeneralwasbornin Hollandin1896.HebecameaRedemptoristin1916,andwasordainedPriestin1922.

HethenwenttoRomefora courseofhigherstudiesandreceivedtheDoctorateofPhilosophyandalsoinTheology.For severalyearshewasaProfessor intheTheologicalSchoolestablishedat"SantAlfonso,"Rome. OnhisreturntoHolland,he taughtMoralandPastoralTheologytotheRedemptoristStudentsatWittem.

Amonghispredecessorsinthis importantofficewerethelate FatherAertnysandFatherCorneliusDamen,thepresentProfessorofMoralTheeologyatthe CollegedePropagandaFide, Rome.Apartfromhiswork amongsthisownReligiousbrethren,theMostReverendFather Buysiswellandfavorably knownthroughoutHollandasa missioner,andasamostsuccessfulDirectorofRetreatsto theClergyandReligious.Itis hopedthatthenewFatherGeneralwillbeabletovisittheRedemptoristsinAustraliaandNew Zealandwithinthenextfew years.

Wordwasalsoreceivedthat VeryRev.Fr.McMullenC.SS.R., whoformanyyearswasteaching atBallaratandGeelong(N.S.W.) hasbeenre-appointedasConsultorforAustralasia.

Keaney,hasbeeninLondonfor somemonthsmakingarrange- mentsforboys,andgirls,too,to cometoAustralia.Hehasbeen inundatedwithenquiriesregardingpassagestoW.A.particularly,evenbeforetheannouncementoftheopeningoftheMigrationScheme. Hehasselected450childrento cometoAustralia,andthesewill beprogressivelysubmittedto theMigrationauthoritiesatAustraliaHouseforpassages,under theGroupSchemeofselection. OfthesetheCatholicEpiscopalMigrationandWelfareAssociationofPerthhasnominated 340forimmediatesailing,comprising240boysand100girls, onbehalfofCastledare,Clontarf,BindoonandTardun,for theChristianBrothers'Scheme, andSt.Joseph'sOrphanage,Subiaco,andNazarethHouse,Geraldton,forthetrainingofthe girls.Thesewillcometothis Stateinbatches,anditishoped thatthefirstlotwillbeonthe firstshiptoleave.

OutoftheothersseekingpassagesthroughBrotherConlonhas emergedalengthylistofhighly desirablepersonswhoareall highlyrecommended.Someof thesehavealreadybeennominatedandplacedwithaccommodationprovided.Othersaresubjectedtodefermentuntilplacementwithaccommodationcanbe provided.

TheAssociationnowseekscontactwithpeoplewhocanassist inthisdirection.Applications areinvitedfortheservicesof thefollowing:Storemanager (36yearsofage),withwifeand onechild;shoemaker(15i);waitress(21);housekeepersanddomestics,farmworkers,painters, plasterers,hotelbookkeeper, shopassistant,nurses(whose passagesaccordingtorecentannouncementsinthePressmaybe delayed),orotherswhomaybe requiredbyemployers.Stateif accommodationcanbeprovided.

TheAssociationalsoseeks contactwithpeoplewhocanpro- videtemporaryaccommodation forsinglepersons,maleorfemale,pendingdeparturetoaposi- tionorforfamilies.

HisGracetheArchbishopof Brisbane,MostRev.J.Duhig, leftbytheA.N.A.Skymaster Waranaonthe4th.inst.forthe U.S.A.WhileinAmericaand Canada,ArchbishopDuhigwill studythelatestdevelopmentsin highereducation.

Dr.Duhigtoldreportersat LosAngelesthatAustralianeededAmericancapitalandAmericanimmigrantstodevelopher naturalresources.

"Wehaveonlyscratchedthe surfaceofAustralia,whichisone oftherichestcountriesinthe worldwithgold,silver,coal, gems,andothervaluables,"he said.

Beforehisdeparture,Dr.Duhig wasadmittedbytheUniversity ofQueenslandtothedegreeof DoctorofLaws,honoriscausa.

DuringlastweekinNewYork, Dr.Duhigwasentertainedat dinnerbytwenty-fiveU.S.army chaplainsfromvariousStates whowerereciprocatingthehospitalityreceivedfromtheArchbishopduringtheirstayin Queensland.

The tionsmosttouchingdemonstraofapeople'sloyaltyand reverencefortheCatholicPriesthoodwerewitnessedinMullewa, wheretheparishionersand othersfromfarafieldgathered onSunday,April27,tocelebrate theSacerdotalSilverJubileeof theVeryRev.FatherMichael Lynch.

Intokenofhisesteemforthe Jubilarianandinrecognitionof theoutstandingserviceshehas renderedtotheChurchinthe DioceseofGeraldton,HisLordshipBishopGummerconferred onhimthetitleof"Deanof Mullewa."Amongthemany marksofaffectionandloyalty bestowedonDeanLynchonthis greatoccasionwasthegiftof £1,000,tobedevotedtotheerec- tionofthenewparochialschool whichtheDeanproposestobuild atMullewa.ThismunificentgiftwasmadebyMrs.Hickey,of Mullewa,whoexpressedthewish thataroomofthenewschool shouldbededicatedtothememoryofherlatehusband,Mr.Dan Hickey.

Althoughtheactualdateof theJubileewasWednesday, April16,itscelebrationwasde- ferreduntilSunday,April27,to facilitatethepresenceofhundredsofpeoplewhootherwise wouldnothavebeenabletoattend.Closeonfivehundred parishionersandvisitorsattendedtheMassandthepublicfunc-tion. Thebeautifulparishchurchof OurLadyofMountCarmelwas, ofcourse,thefocalpointofthe celebrations.ThithertheBis- hop,MostRev.Dr.Gummer journeyedfromGeraldtontopre., sideattheSolemnHighMass andpreachthejubileepanegyric.TheHighMasswascelebrated bytheJubilarianhimself,who

wasassistedbyVeryRev.Father O'Connor,Adm.(Geraldton)as deacon,andRev.FatherGeorge Vill,P.S.M.(St.Joseph'sFarm School,Tardun)assub-deacon.

Afinetributewaspaidto DeanLynchbytheBishopinthe occasionalsermon,whichwas alsoalucidexpositionofthe sublimedignityandpowerofthe Priesthood.

ShortBiographyofJubilarian.

TheVeryRev.DeanLynch 'wasordainedinRomeonApril 16,1922.

AnephewofthelateandrenownedSenatorLynch,Dean LynchwasborninKells,Co. Meath,Ireland.Atanearly agehecametoWesternAustraliawithhisparents,whosettled downatThreeSpringswhere theysuccessfullyengagedin farming.

DeanLynchreceivedhisprimaryeducationfromthePresentationSistersatGeraldton.He returnedtoIrelandforhissecondaryeducation,whichhereceivedatthenotedCistercian CollegeofMountSt.Joseph's, Roscrea,Co.Tipperary.On completinghissecondarystudies heproceededtoPropagandaCollege,Rome,wherein1922he wasordainedtothePriesthood afterabrilliantscholasticcareer. InPropagandaCollegehemet twoofGeraldton'sfutureBishops,MostRev.Dr.O'Collins andMostRev.Dr.Gummer. DeanLynchwastheirLordships' seniorbyoneyearinPropagandaCollege. AfterhisordinationDean Lynchreturnedtohisdiocese, wherehehassincelabouredzealouslyandsuccessivelyinMullewa,Geraldton,ThreeSprings, Leonora,andnowagaininMullewa,towhichparishhewasappointedinOctoberoflastyear.

MonsignorLigutti,theNationalSecretaryoftheAmerican CatholicRuralMovementhas beenvisitingmanycountriesin thepasttwelvemonthstostudytheChurch'slayapostolicinthe countryareas.DuringFebruary headdressedgatheringsthrough-outVictoria,NewSouthWales andQueensland. BeforeleavingAustraliahe toldreportersthattheChurchin Australiaisdoingaswellasany- whereintherurallayaposto- late.Hisactualwordswere, "IhavestudiedRuralMovements inmanypartsoftheworldand Ihavenohesitationinsaying thattheAustralianNational CatholicRuralMovementisdoingaworkthatisunsurpassed anywhere."

CatholicstudentsinCalifornia. areboycottingallcinemaperformancesforonemonthasa protestagainsttheindecency, brutalityandimmoralityofthe film,"DuelintheSun."They areworkingalsotoenlist6,000,000studentsthroughoutthe U.S.A.tocampaignagainstindecentfilms."DuelintheSun" isbookedforAustralia.Has anythingbeenheardfromour Catholicstudents?

Castingasidetime-honoured Vaticantraditionsandformalities,theHolyFatherwelcomed inhisownlibrarytheBritish servicemenandwomenwhohad cometoRomeespeciallytobid himfarewellbeforeBritishforcesDuringarewithdrawnfromItaly. theproceedingsthe Chaplainleadingthegroup,Fr. PeterDorman,askedandreceivedHisHoliness'permissionto sing"GodBlessOurPope."The HolyFather,appearingtobe deeplymoved,followedthewords fromabookonhisdesk,andaftrwardsdeclared: "Iamsohappy.Ishallalwaysrememberthisday."

Theaudiencebeganinanunorthodoxway.Normallythe HolyFatherenterstheaudience chamberonlywhenallthepilgrimsareassembled.Onthis occasion-thefirsttimein10 yearsthatsuchalargenumber hasbeenadmittedtothePope's librtary-theSovereignPontiff wasalreadyseatedathisdesk whentheCatholicservicefolk entered. Eachoneofthe150inthedelegationwaspersonallypresented totheHolyFather,whospoke toeachoneinEnglish. Whenallweregroupedaround thedesk,FatherDormanpresentedastatueofOurLadyof Walsingbans,whichisamarkof thegratitudeofCatholicsinthe BritishForcesforthekindness theHolyFatherhasshownto themwhentheyhavecometosee him.

TheHolyFatherhelpedFr. Dormantoremovethestatue fromitsbox.Thankingthesoldiersfortheirgift,hesaid:"We shallkeepitclosetoOurperson. ."

Thesingingofthehymnbroke anothercustom.Therehas neverbeforebeensinginginthe library.

AfterthattheHolyFather wasphotographedwiththepilgrimage.HisHolinesshad personallyorderedthephotographertoattend.NormallypermissiontotakephotographsintheVaticanisgivenonlyon veryrareoccasionsandfacilities arerestrictedtocertainpublic apartmentsorSt.Peter's.

AccordingtooneBritish ChaplainwithLheparty,incredulousVaticanofficialsarestilldiscussingthisincidentwithamazement.

Beforethepicturesweretaken theHolyFatherhelpedtomove chairs.Healsonoticedthat thestatuewasnotfacingthe cameraandhimselfarrangedit inabetterposition.

Thisaudienceendedathreedaypilgrimageinwhichthepil- grimssawvariousRomechurches,heardMassandreceived HolyCommunionintheCatacombs,sotightlypackedthat theyhadnotevenroomtokneel,andattendedBenedictioninthe EnglishchurchandtheVenerableEnglishCollege. Thepilgrimswereledby BrigadierThomasChurchill.

Thisdoctrinewasrevealedby OurLordasaspecialcounterto thegreatestofthedangersthe Churchhastofaceinthesemoderntimes-thedangersofcoldnessandindifference.

Devotionitselfcomesfromthe Latinword"devovere"todedirate,toconsecrateoneselftoa person.DevotiontowardsGod meansthetotalconsecrationof ourlifetoHim,itisthusthe highestexpressionofourlove.

Whenitissaidthatthisde. votionwasrevealedasaspecial antidotetothecoldnessofmoderntimes,itisnotbyanymeans impliedthatitwasunknownin theearlyChurchorunpractised tillthisrevelationtookplace.The earlyFathersandSaintsofthe Churchknewthisdevotionand theirwritingsarefullofreferencestothissymbolofthelove ofourSaviour-St.Augustine, St.Bernard,St.Gertrudewrote prayersinhonouroftheSacred Heart-St.Teresa,whoseheart wasmysteriouslywoundedby DivineLove,St.MaryMagdalenofPazzi,St.RoseofLima andothersaintedvirginsknew wellandloudlyproclaimedthe treasuresoftheSacredHeart.

TheDoctors,too,oftheChurch wholivedintimesmorerecent thanSt.Bernard,yetpreviousto theformalrevelationofthisdoctrine,SaintsandApostlesand holymenThomasandBonaventoreandPeterofAlcantraand PhilipNeriallspeakinterms thatprovehowperfectlythey understandinsubstancethisdevotion.

Itwasonthefeast(layofSt. JohntheEvangelistthatshe heardHimsaytoher,"Behold Myheartwhichissoinflamed withloveofmenthatbeingunabletocontainwithinItselfthe ardoursofitscharityItisforced tospreadthembyyou;Itwishes tomanifestItselftomenthat theymaybeenrichedbythese precioustreasureswhichImake knowntoyou,Ihavechosenyou asanabyssofunworthinessand ignorancefortheaccomplishment ofsogreatadesignthatallmay bedonebyMe."

Duringtheoctaveofthefeast ofCorpusChristiofthefollowingyearHeagainappearedto herandshowingherHisheartHe saidintonesofsorrow,"Behold thisheartwhichhaslovedmenso muchthatithassufferedeverything,hasgivenallitstreasures andhasmadeeveryeffortto provetothemthatlove.Inreturn Ireceivefromthegreaterpart onlyingratitude,contempt,sacrilege,irreverenceandcoldnessin thissacramentoflove.Butwhat painsmemostisthathearts whichareconsecratedtbMetreat meso.ForthisreasonIwishthat thefirstFridayaftertheoctave oftheBlessedSacramentbeconsecratedasafestivalinhonour ofMyHeart,bycommunicating onthatdayandbymakinga solemnactofreparationforthe indignitiesithasreceivedduring thetimeithasbeenexposed uponMyaltars.Ipromisethat MyHeartwillpourforthItsdivineloveuponallwhowillrenderItthishonourandleadothers todothesame."

NATUREOFDEVOTIONTO THESACREDHEART

Theverynameofthedevotion impliesthattheobjectitproposestousforspecialveneration istheSacredHeartofJesus, thoughanyhonourgiventoan objectconnectedwiththeHumanityofOurLordmustbeultimatelyreferredtothePersonofthe EternalWord.Suchobjectsmay behonouredinthemselvesunder atwofoldaspect.Theonematerialandvisible,theotherspiritualandinvisible.

MaterialObject

ThematerialobjectofthisdevotionistheheartofJesus.The humanheart,comprisedinHis humanity,unitedwiththeDivine Person,partofthatwonderful whole-theIncarnateSonofGod -notseparable,eveninour mindsfromthatwonderfulwhole butespeciallydweltuponasthe immediatetermofourappreciationofourworship,ofourlove.

Wefindthatfromthemost ancenttimesofwhichweknow anything,thehumanhearthas beenlookeduponastheseatof theaffectionsandhasthuscome tobeasymbol.IndeedintheSaccredScripturesthemselvesthe hearthasbeenusedasasymbol notonlyoftheaffectionsbutindeedalsooftheactsoftheintellect.Thereareseventy-one booksinourCanonofSacred Scripturesandinsixtythreeof thesetheheartisspokenofinits moralsignification.

TheheartthenofOurLord standsforthewholeofHishumanvirtues,sentiments,affection andaboveallofHisloveforus. Theobject.ofourworshipisOur Lord'sHeartoffleshaspartof HissacredHumanityhypostaticallyunitedtoHisDivinePerson andthereforeentitledtosupreme adoration.Itwouldbeagrave mistaketoexcluudefromour worshiptherealbodilyheartof Christandsubstituteameresym-

bolitwouldlikewisebeagreat mistakeintheoppositedirection toviewtheobjectofourhonour andlovemerelyasaportion, someportion,anyportionofOur Lord'sSacredBody.ItisHis physicalheart.Itisatthesame timethelegitimatesymbolof allthatcanattractus,allthat caninstructusinHishumanity. Heisastrulyahumanbeing asanyofus.Heisourmodelin ourexteriorconduct.Heisour modelinHisinteriorsentiments asmanifestedbyHisoutward actionsorascertainablebylegitimateinferencefromwhatever naturalorrevealedknowledge wehaveofhumannature.

SPIRITUALOBJECT

Thespiritualobjectofthisdevotionislove.Thatlovewhich causedtheworldandustobe created.Thatlovewhichinspired thecaveofBethlehemandthe HillofCalvarythelovewhich madeHimgiveHimselftous intheSacramentoftheBlessed Eucharist.Aslovecontainsall thesethingssotoodoesthedevotiontotheSacredHeartcontainalltheotherdevotionsthat tendtoHim.

PracticeoftheDevotion

Thegreatrecommendationof thisdevotionisthatitisessentiallypractical.Itisimpossibleto honourtheSacredHeartinthe spiritofthedevotionwithout feelingourheartspressedsweetlybutstronglytoimitateitsvirtues.Forourveneratinonmust notrestinavagueindefinite feelingofrespect.ItmusthumblyenterintotheAdorableHeart andhonourItspatience,Its sweetnessItsmeekness,Itscompassion,Asdevotion,Itszeal,Its sorrow,Itsjoyandalltheother emotionswithwhichItthrilled inthevehemenceofitsburning love.Thenthishonouristotend topreparationandtheworkofreparationmustbeginwithourselvessothattheveryvenerationof theSacredHeartplacesbeforeus atthesametimethestrongest incentivetoHisimitationandthe sweetestmodelofChristian virtue.

TheChurch'suseofLatin servesapracticalpurposeas well.Itprovidesaready meansfortheexchangeofideas betweenmembersoftheChurch belongingtodifferentnations. Thustheofficialdocumentsof theChurcharemostlywrittenin Latin.Thetextbooksdealing withthevariousecclesiastical sciencesarewritteninthatlanguage,andarethusreadilyavailabletostudentsofalllands.Ecclesiasticswhohavenomodern languageincommon,havea meansofcommunicatingwith oneanother. Whilelabourleadershailedthe courageousandsincerestepof Mr.Sullivan,theactionitself wasfullyasdramaticinits effectaswastheexposurea yearagoofCanadianCommun.istsservingasRussianspies,for whichFredRose,formermem- berofParliament,nowisserv- ingaprisonterm,andSamCarr, formerorganiseroftheLabour ProgressiveParty,isbeing sought.

Bothmenwerementionedby Mr.Sullivan,whodeclaredthat Communistsheldpowerinmanyunions,andhadmanagedtosecure wheregovernmentalpositions theymightbetterserve Russia.

BorninBelfast,Ireland,Mr. SullivancametoCanadain1922andworkedasaseaman.In 1935hefoundedtheCanadian Seamen'sUnionandinitsfirst strike,shortlyafterward,won recognitionoftheunionandincreasedpayfortheseamen.Dur- ingthewarhewasinternedfor twoyearsforhisconnection withtheCommunistParty.

Inadditiontonaming-Mr.Rose andMr.Carr,Mr.Sullivanas- sertedthatMissFriedaLinton, secretaryoftheC.S.U.,actedas theagentofthepartyingiving him"directives"fortheconduct oftheunion.

TheCommunistsdonotconcealtheirdissatisfactionwith theyouth.Theysaythatthe youthis"reactionary,'doesnot recognisetherecentbloodless revolution"asthefinaldecision, andisinfluencedbythe"London myth."

THEINDIANCHRISTIANS.

Inaccordancewiththenormal practiceofoursecularpress,the questionoftheIndianChris- tiansAndtheirfuturehasbeen practicallyignoredinthediscussianofIndianproblems.Yettheyarenotbyanymeansaninconsiderablebody,beingthe largestofthereligiousminori- tiesaftertheMoslems.There aremoreChristiansthanSikhs, Jains,BuddhistsorParsees;and theyarealmosttheonlyIndian communitywhichcanberegard- edas"Indian"inthesenseof beinguntrammelledintheirnationalloyaltybycommunal separatism.

Christianconvertsinmodern timeshavecomemainlyfrom theranksoftheaboriginalsand the"untouchables,"thoughthere areChristianswhoorginatefrom allcastesandcommunities.The olderChristiancommunitiesof SouthIndiaareaffectedagood dealbytheIndiancastepre- judices,whicharedifficulttoeradicate.Sidebysidewiththem,however,aretheverylargenumberdescendedfromorphanand unwantedchildrenrescuedand rearedbytheWesternmissionaries,whoarequitefreefromall theirrace'sprejudicesorsuper- stitions.Conversionsamong the"intelligentsia"andhighcasteIndiansareinfrequent- partlybecausetheyarestrongly attachedtotheirsocialtraditionsandprivileges,andpartly becausetheyareaffectedby Westernsecularismimbibedin theireducation.

TheIndianChristiansare,on thewhole,apoorcommunity, mainlyofpeasants,whoendure muchsocialoppressionfromthe higher-casteHindus.Theyare, ingeneral,strongsupportersof Congressaimsandideals;some oftheirleadershaveplayeda distinguishedpartinpolitical andsocialreformprojects.ManyofthembelievethatChristianity willhaveabetterchancewhen Indiansnolongeridentifyitwith thewhite"Raj"-but,whilethe attitudeofNehruandotherCongressleadersisonthewholere-assuring,therearegroundsfor

inKeithWinter'splay,"The Ringmaster,"performedlast weekbythenewRoyalPerth HospitalTheatreGuild,anactor losestheuseofhislegsthrough anaccident,andrelieveshisfrustrationbythrustinghishands intothetangledskeinsofhuman lives.Thesenseofpowerhederivedfromhispositioninthe theatrewasthebreathoflifeto him;throughastrongpersonalityhewasabletoplayonthe emotionsofanaudiencebut,bereftofthestage,heattemptedto playtheringmasterinthehumancircusbeyondtheproscenium.

Theauthorplaceswitheasycoincidencethreesituationswithin theorbitofhispower-thepas- sion'ofamiddle-agedwomanfor aboy,theloveaffairbetweenthe

boyandthewoman's(laughter, andthedesperateifreluctant loveofhisownwifeforanother man.Withheartlessmockery, theringmasterbetraysthetrust ofeach,but,likeanotherman whowasuntruetohimself,he pulleddownthecolumnsonhimself.

Thegreatweaknessofhisportraitwasthathefailedtorealise thatHammondwasessentially acharmingperson;itwasthe secretofhispower,buthewas shownasamalignantperson rightfromthejump.Hammond shouldfooltheaudienceintosympathyashefooledthosearound himrightuptothemomentof hisattackonhiswife.Hewas notabadman,hewasafrustratedman.Inthesameway, hiswifewasnotabadwoman, becausesheallowedintheend theadvancesofalover;shewas awomandesperatewithfearand unhappiness.SydneyDavisdid somegoodworkbothinhisown actingandintheproductionofa rawcast,buttheauthorwanted PeterHammondtoplaythelead.

Oftheremainderofthecast HelenMcGowan,asAnne,the wife,impressedmost,andHelen Gratwick,asMrs.West,wasresponsibleforasincereperformance;and,despiteaslightstridencyofvoice,DelphineParker didjusticetothepartofthe daughter,Peggy.GordonHunt, BrianDunn,andMaryColebatch weresometimesmorethanadequate,whenitisremembered thatthesepeoplearenew-corners tothestage. AndMr.ClaudioArrauisjust that-agreatartist.Apparentlyundeterredbythepettyannoyancesthatworriedlistenersa dozenrowsback,headdressed himselftotheSteinwaywith single-mindedpurposefulness.In -theheavyhushofthatvastauditoriumhissensitivefingers foundtheanswertoallthat Mozarthaddreamedofinthe FantasyinCMinorK.396.When thetremendousapplausethat followedthisfirstshortoffering haddiedaway,theaccomplished pianistturnedtoBeethoven.For overhalf-an-hourhelivedin spiritwiththedeafcolossusof themusicalworld,traversingthe sombreclimesandshadowyculde-sacsoftheSonatainCMinor, Op.III,untilweemergedintothe untroubledatmosphereofthe concludingmovement.Itwasa memorableexperience.Scarcely asoulmoved.Mr.ClaudioArraudemonstratedhiscomplete masteryoftechnique,andrevealedinadditionthathehadatrue artist'sappreciationofallthe subtletiesthatdistinguishinspiredplayingfrommerelygood workmanship.Hewasfaithful tohisart,too,inthathescornedthetricksandartificesthat deceivetheprideofsomelesser performers.Whathegaveout wasallpuremusic.Anotable featureofhisperformancewas theimpressionofimmenseenergyandconcentrationconveyed oyhisrobustapproachtothe keyboard.Herewasnoneof theemptygracethatmarksthe sittingpositionofmanystudents ofthepiano;Mr.Arrau'sgrace wasinhismusic.Hecould switchwithamazingeasefrom thunderouscrescendostothe mostdelicatepianissimoeffects ofwhichtheancientSteinway wascapable-andallthisatbewilderingspeedifnecessary.One ofthelastingmemoriesIcarried awaywithmefromthisconcert wastheentrancingvisionof whirlingfingersandapairof handsdancingonthehighnotes forlongspellswithincredible speedandmachine-likeefficiency,seeeminglyindependentofthe motionlessbodythatdrovethem.

AftertheBeethovenonedid notneedfurtherevidenceofMr. Arrau'sskill,yetthefeasthad onlybegun.Mendelssohn's"Rondo Capriccioso"andSchumann's "Carnival'sJestfromVienna,Op. 26,"completedthefirsthalfof theprogramme. intermission.Enthusiasmranhighduringthe Mr.Arrauwas warmlyandwidelydiscussedin thefoyerandinthecomfortable Capitollounge.Onecouldnot helpfeeling,though,thatthe plauditsofPerthpeoplemust soundfaintagainstthevolumeof praisethatthisworld-famedartisthasalreadywoninspheres whereonlythebestcansurvive.

Stillmorestriking,andfar moreextensiveinrange,isthe wideningcontrolbygovernment ofmoreandmorepartsandfeaturesoftheeconomy,exercised bythelonglistsofCommissions andbureausandalphebetical agencies. ." Underpresentconditionsinthe UnitedStatesitistruethatthe governmentmanagersdonotaltcgetherhavefreerein;butthe processofextendinggovernmentalownershipandcontrolneverthelessmeansacontinuousincreaseofmanagerialdominance intheeconomyasawhole.

Somuchfortheomnicompetentstateandthemanagerial classasrealities.Whenwecome topassjudgmentsofvaluation wemustbecautious:wemust notmistakeanecessaryevilfor whatisidealorcondemnwhatis legitimatewithwhatisexcessiveandrepugnant.

CaseforStateControl.

Whatcasecanthenbemade fortheomnicompetentState?

'tissaidthatStatecontrolof industryconducestoefficiency, thatitendsmassunemployment, thatitendsindustrialunrest, thatitfostersandgivesexpressiontotheprincipleofhuman equality.

Thefirstansweristhatif thesebenefitsaretobepurchasedatthecostofhumandignity andfreedom,then,foralltheir desirability,theyareratedtoo high.Inthesecondplace,is itcertainthattherearenoother means,shortofStatecontrol anddependencebywhichthese blessingscanbeobtained?

Andeachoftheclaimsmade forStatecontrolhastobejustified.

Itispossiblethatefficiencyresults.ItcertainlydidinGermany,butfewadvocatesofState controlwillbaseanargumenton Germanexample.TheEnglish coalindustryhadbeenunder governmentcontrollongbefore nationalisationtookplaceand theStateresulthardlystrengthensthe planners'contention.

Itishighlyprobablethat,undermanagerialeconomy,mass unemploymentmaybeeliminated.ThishashappenedinRussiaandinpre-warGermany; but,asweshallsee,individual libertymustsuffergravelyinthe process.Thesamemaybesaid ofindustrialunrest,withthe modificationthatunrestisnot ended,asmuchasrenderedinarticulate.Nounrestwillbe manifestinaconscriptlabour battalioninRussia.And,nearerhome,theStatecontrolledin-

dustriesprovideasmanystrikes anddisputesastheprivateownedfactories-perhapsevenmore.

Asforthesuggestionthat makingmansubservienttothe Stateenhanceshisconsciousness ofdignityandequality.wecan onlymeetitwithaflatdenial. Infact,therealargumentagainstthesystemisthatitweakens man'ssenseofindependenceand self-respectand,asforequality, theSocialistmythofageneral levellingouthasbeenfairlywell explodedintotalitarianRussia.

AnUnskilledCivilServant.

Infact,asfarastheworker isconcerned,thepricehepays fortheallegeddignityaccruing tohimfrombecomingan"unskilledcivilservant"isthat, wheras,underCapitalism,he wasfreetochangeorwithhold employment,underStatecontrol theexerciseoftheserightsmay beseriouslyrestrictedoraltogetherdeniedowingtothenecessityoftheStateplanners avoidingfailureinanyoftheir ventures.

Indeed,iftotalitarianplanning istogotoitslogicalconclusion, itmustfollowtheRussianexampleanddenylibertyofcontact andchoiceofemploymenttoits workers.AsanEnglishjour nalsaid,supeakingofBritish planning,"Theneweconomic systemhasoneimportantomission-thereisnothingtomakea manworkhardifhedoesnot wantto.InRussiaandother thorough-goingSocialistcowltriesunpleasantbuteffective meansexistofdealingwiththe slacker."

TheCaseAgainstStateControl

Asagainstallegedbenefitsaccruingfromtheomnicompetent State,whataretheharmfulof fectsofexcessiveStateinterferenceorexcessivecontrol?

TheomnicompetentStatein evitablyproducestheall-depend. antcitizen,subjecttoabureaucraticorderingofhislife.With thesurrenderofallresponsibility goesalossofhumandignityand essentialfreedom, notexistinonewhoisamere coginamachine.

Moreover,apriceispaidfor theextensiveStatecontroland mltiplicityofStateservicesina lossofthatcreativepowerwhich requireslibertyofactionforits dueexercise.Onthesocial level,wefindthattheplanned, omnicompetentStatetendsto substituteartificialcommunal unitsforthenaturalunitofthe family.Freemealsatschools, communitycentres,daynurseries--allthesemay,incertaincircutiistatic,s,benecessary;but theyshouldneverberegarded aspartofthenormalorderof things,fortheyalltendtodisturbthenaturalfocusofthe home.

Again,Totalitarianplanning radicallyaffectstheyerystructureoftheStateitself.There arethosewhoidentifyStatecontrolwithpopularcontroland withthisglibassumptionoppositionissilenced.Butalittle considerationshouldconvinceus thatthemoretheStateinterferesinourdailylivestheless controlwehaveofthebureaucraticmachine.Nolegislative assemblycandealwiththemultiplicityofregulationsthatmust bemadebyaGovernmentthat hasitsfingerineverypie.

Theresultisthattheremust bedelegationofauthorityto officialdomandtheemergenceof themanagerialsystemindependentofpopularcontrol.Instead ofGovernmentbylaw,enacted bylegislature,wewillhaveGovernmentbyorder,framedbyofficials,aconditionwhichwhatever temporaryresultsitmayshow, isrepugnanttotheWesternconceptionofDemocracy.

Howeveritbe,itwouldseem frompressreportsthatthedoctor'sghastlyadmissiondidnot greatlystireitherpublicorprofessionalopinion.TheGeneral MedicalCouncilannouncedthatit actedonlyoncomplaints,and thatnocasesofeuthanasiahad beenreported.Onewonders whethertheyexpectthevictimor themurderertoreport.Asfor theHomeOffice,thewholematterisoutsideitsprovince.The DirectorofProsecutionssaid, withthemasterlyinactivityof theentrenchedbureaucrat,"The publicmustwaitandsee."The publicmustwaitalright,but shoulditbecomeincurablyillor oldormentallydeficient,may geesoonerthantheyexpectif theeuthanasiastshavetneirway. ENEMIESOFLIFE

TheCatholicChurchpenetrates thismaurlinfogofemotionalism withtheunbearablerayoftruth whichproclaimsthatitisnever lawfultokilltheinnocentwhen deathisinflictedasameansof attainingsomeotherobject.Such

anactisexpresslyforbiddenby Godinthe23rd.chapterofthe BookofExodus:"Theinnocent andjustpersonthoushaltnot puttodeath."Thequestonof whethereuthanasiaisvoluntary ornotisimmaterialtothemoralityofthequestion,forthepa- tienthasnomorerighttoconsenttothewilfulshorteningof lifethanthedoctorhastoencompassit.Atthispointit maybeappropriatetoremark howtheseheresieswhichin effectputoutthesupernaturallifeofmanareatonealsoinattackinghisrighttonaturallife. Contraceptiondeniestherightto beborn;sterilisationtherightto propagatelife,whileeuthanasia deniestherighttoprolonglife toitsnaturalterm.Thesepa-

politicalreasons.Ifadoctor mayextinguishlifebecausea mansuffersintolerablepainfrom anincurabledisease,itwillnot beverylongbeforesocialreformrswillbedemandingsimilarrightsinothercases.The bed-ridden,eventhoughnotin pain;theinsane;thementallydeficient;theaged-allofthese canbeshowntobeeconomically unproductiveandanincreasinglyheavyburdenontheState. Woulditnotbeinthepublicinteresttoeliminatethem?Then, onthepoliticalside,asoursystemsmovetowardsone-partyor one-mancontrolwilldesiremore andmoretoeliminateobdurate enemies.Andiftotalitarianism becomesthepoliticaldesideratum ofto-morrow,itmightwellbe arguedthattheenthanasiaofthe individualistswouldhelptowards adesirableend.Suchaline ofargumentcanbeextended alarminglyifonearguesfrom thematerialisticviewpoint.

ONALLFOURSWITHNAZISM

Andlestanyoneshouldthink thatthesecasesaretoohighly colouredandexaggerated,it mightbewelltorecallthatthe NaziscommittedtheirabominationsinBelsenandDachauon exactlysimilarpretextsinwhich someanyhowwereundoubtedly sincere-AsimilarstateofaffairsprevailsinRussiaatthis day.Now,whentheNazisdid thesethingstousandtotheir ownpeople,there.werenomurmursofapprovalfromtheeuthanasiasts.Nomoveofprotest againstthetrialofthedocors concernedinthesemurdershas beenheardinthepress.Every- bodyacceptedtheseatrocitiesfor whattheywere.Dr.Barton andhisilkwerenotbusywriting to"TheTimes"indefenceof whatwasalogicalextensionof euthanasiantheory.

POTENTIALMURDERERS

AHand-outfor Marriage

IntheHouseofRepresenta- tiveslastweek,theMinisterfor Informationtoldamemberthat areviewofpopulationtrends showedthatAustraliawasslowly bleedingtodeath,andthatthere wouldbenoAustraliain50years unlessthedeclinewasarrested. Thereviewmerelyreinforcedthe argumentsthatCatholicshave been againstpresentingforyearspast theMalthusians.The gravityofthesituationfroma nationalpointofviewwasbest illustratednotsomuchinthe drystatisticsofthebirth-rateas intheincreaseofpeopleaged65 andoverby430,000in35years, andbythedecreaseinthenumberofchildrenunder15yearsby almost11percent.duringthe sameperiod.Thisover-balancein theage-compositionofAustralian societyisalreadyreflectingit- selfeconomicallyintheenormous increaseinold-agepensions,and inthedeclineinthenumberof productiveworkers.Itwillincreasenotablyinthenextdecade, ifthetrendcontinues,untilit becomesanintolerableburden onthetaxpayer.Now,while economicconsiderationsarenot predominantlyimportant,they havetheirplaceintheperspec- tiveofhistory.Andwemaybe surethatthematerialistswillnot

waytoextenuatetheirintrinsic malice.Itis,forinstance,undeniablethatthehousingbottleneckthroughoutthenationis militatingseriouslyagainst youngmarriedcoupleswhoare anxioustohavechildren.The fearofwar,also,whichisbeing gliblydiscussedbyinternational leaders,isnothelpinganyinthe solutionofthisvexedquestion. Noaspectofpoliticalliberalismismoreperilousto thewelfareofthiscountrythanthepretencethatitis possibletoallowthecitizensunrestrictedliberty.Truly man'shighestgiftsarehisfree-willandhisintelligence, andtheproperexerciseanddevelopmentofthesefaculties postulatesawidemeasureoffreedom.Butthereare limits,eveninaman'spersonallife,whicharisenotonly externallybutalsointernallyandfromthenatureofthe humanminditself.Theveryconstitutionoftheintellect precludesitfromcomprehendingthesubstantialnatureof manythings,anddespitefree-willitisneitherreasonable notpossibleforamantoelecttobeanangeloragiraffe. Externally,mostoftherestrictionsonthefreeexerciseof man'shighestfacultieshavetheirrootinhissocialinstinctswhichhaveimpelledmentolivetogetherinwhat wecallsociety.Toachievethefullbenefitofcollective livingtheindividualmustbepreparedtocurbhispersonaldesiresandtocurtailhisrightsasanindividual. InthisregardCatholics,andindeedmenofgoodwillatlarge,areincreasinglybewilderedbythefailureof governmentstoprotectthenation'syouthagainstthe blatantdecadenceofmuchoftheliterature,bothimported andprintedlocally,whichisforpublicsale.Itisindeed ominoustofindwithinoneofthecentralcityblocksof Perthtwobookshopsundisguisedlydevotedtothesaleof filth.Andthesepurveyorsofpornographyarenot contentwiththeordinarymethodsofdisplayingtheir wares.butareintentuponexhibitionsofphotographyand zalaciousdescriptivemattercalculatedtoarousemorbid curiosityandprurience.Norcantheypleadtheextenuat;onthatatleastasectionoftheir'goodsrelatestoworks onphysicalfitnessorliteratureassuch.Eventhough thisclaim,wereitadvanced,mightbeobjectivelytrue. thereisoverwhelmingevidenceintheiradvertisingand theirwindowdisplaysthatdirty-mindednessistheirmain drivingforce.Wheresuchastateofaffairsistolerated byapatheticormutepublicopinion,bythesilenceofthe press,bytheinactivityofthepolice,andbythesupinenessofpoliticians,itistimeforco-operativeactionbyall whovaluenaturalmoralityandChristianvalues.

ItisquitevainforpoliticiansoftheStateParlia.nenttoprotestweaklythattheyhavenotthepowerto prohibittheimportationandlocalpublishingoftheseperniciousbooksandpulp-magazines.Admittedlytheyhave thepowertopunishseverelysuchcrimesasindecentexposureofthebody,yetanybodycangetawaywiththe mostflagrantexhibitionofperversionofmind.Even coulditheprovedthattheStatehasnottheauthority necessarytostopthistrafficsodamagingtoyouthful mindsandhearts,thereisnoreasonwhyitcouldnotforce theissuewiththeFederalGovernment.Itisindeeda debasedlibertywhichallowsatiny,diseasedminorityto peddlepornographyinsuchapublicmannerastoaffront thesensibilitiesofthemassofChristianparentsconcernedwiththespiritualandmoralwelfareoftheirsonsand daughters.Thebasicpurposeforwhichgovernments exististoprotectthecommongood,andiftheyfailtodo thisitisforthecitizenswhoseintereststheyaresupposed torepresenttotakeappropriateactionthemselves.Itis tohehopedthatournumerousCatholicsocietiesandCatholicparentswilldeliberatethismatterwithaviewto concertedaction.

OnWednesday,June11,Father JohnLynch,thezealousandpopu- larParishPriestofMidland Junction,willcelebratetheSil verJubileeofhisPriesthood.

Theoccasionwillbemarkedby thecelebrationofSolemnHigh Massinthemorning,atwhich HisGracetheArchbishopwill preside,andasocialfunctionin theevening.

FatherLynchwasbornin1894 inKildare,Ireland.Hereceived hisearlyeducationattheCistercianCollegeofMt.St.Joseph, Roscrey,Co.Tipperary,andin 1915enteredthefamousCollege of"AllHallows."Heobtained hisB.A.degreein1918,andwas ordainedtherein1922. He&rivedinPerthinSeptember,1922,andafterafortnight attheCathedralwasstationedat Leedervilleforthreeyears.He wasthentransferredtoNortham,whereheremainedonlyashorttime,andwasthensentas locumtenensfortwelvemonths toNarrogin. HewasappointedParishPriestin1926oftheJarrandalePinjarraparish,andin1933he leftforIreland,whereforafurtherfiveyearsheengagedin workonthehomemission.

WhileIrishcensusfigurestell ofafallingpopulationandunhealthyemigrationoflatemarriagesandalowbirth-rate,the demographicstatisticsofPortugalmostrecentlyissued(for 1941)showmoremarriagesin thatcountrythaninanyyear since1886,morebirthsanda recordlowfigureforinfantmortality.Asagainstthesixthousandoddwho,amongtheseven millisnorsowhoinhabitmetropolitanPortugalfounditnecessarytoemigrateinthatyear, nearly2,000returnedtoPortugalafteraperiodabroad.In all,thepopulationofthecountryhareusedby90,000in1945. STILLINRUSSIANPRISONS.

Athirdyearofimprisonment beganrecentlyfortheleaders ofthePolishUndergroundMovement,whowereinJune,1945, threemonthsafterarrest,sentencedinMoscow.Someof themwerereleased,butMr.Jankowski,Vice-PremierofthePolishGovernment,Gen.Okulicki, thelastCommanderofthePolish HomeArmy,andthethreeother personsstillremaininprison. Besidesthemtherearesoldiers ofthePolishHomeArmy.The London"PolishDaily"estimates thatabout50,000ofthemstill sufferinRussianprisonsand concentrationcamps.Itwas revealedthatRussiahasreleasednearlyamillionGermanprisonersofwar.ThePoles,who helpedtheRussianarmy,deserve evenbettertreatment.Itseems thatasubstantialpercentageof thosestillimprisonedconsistsof thosePoleswhofoughtinEasternPoland.Fromthetimeof theRibbentrop-Molotovalliance Russiaregardedthisterritory asapartoftheSovietUnion. Hencethereisindignationthat thesePolesfoughttheGermans asPolish,andnotasRussian, units.

Thereareseventeenteamsin theAssociation,makingatotal of119playersandapproximately 40reserveshavebeenregistered bythedifferentbranches.The forgoingnumberstellofthesuccessoftheAssociation,andwe thankallthebranches,particularlythecaptainsoftheteams, fortheeffortstheyhavemade tobringabouttheinterestof theirteamandtheobtainingof theuniformsforMay24.

Aftersuchalongspellofunsettledweather,tohaveour openingdayundersuchexcellent conditions,madeusfeelsurethat ourprayersforthesuccessof theAssociationwerebeinganswered,andwewouldaskmemberstocontinuewiththeirprayers,particularlytoOurLady HelpofChristians,Patronessof Australia,sothatthisyearwill beanoutstandingoneinthefield ofbasketball.

Manycomplimentaryremarks havebeenpassedabouttheuniformsofthevariousbranches andthesuitabilityofsamefor basketball.Onceagainwe wouldthankthebranchesfor havingtheuniformsinreadiness forthe24th.inst.

Theplaywasofafairstandard,butrotuptoexpectations; therewasalackofteamwork, thefootworkwasuncertain,and manyblindpassesweremade. Weareexpectingimprovement fromquiteafewbranches,especiallythosewhowereunable toselecttheirteamstilljust priortothe24thinst.,andconsequenlywereunabletopractice sufficientlyasateam.

TheAustralianaborigine,said FatherWorms,isprehistoricman inthefleshandprovidesavisible revelationofearlypre-historic life.

FatherWormssaidthathe desiredtoemphasisetheword "modern"inthetitleofhislecture.Theearlierethnology(say 1880-1910)waslargelydeterminedbypreconceived,materialistic principles,and"psychologised"a greatdeal.Itneglectedthehistoricalsignificanceofthemany culturesofmankind.Bracketed withcomparativereligion,it oftenappearedastumblingblock andhadthereputationofbeing adangeroussubjectforaCatholic.Thiswastheperiodwhen mensuchasJ.G.Fraser,E.B. Taylor,HerbertSpencer,L.H. Morgan,andotherevolutionists dominatednotonlyethnology, butsociologyandcomparativere ligion.

Modernethnologyhasreplaced thisevolutionaryschoolstepby stepinrecentyears.Itemphasisedthenecessityofmaking scientificallyclearthehistorical positionofeachtribeofthehumanrace.

Evolution,consideredasan ethnnologicaltheory,attempted toexplainhumanculturenot fromthehistoricalstandpointbut bygroupingethnologicalfacts onthebasisofpreconceived ideas.Itsupposedageneraldevelopmentofthepresentstand dardofintellect,language,moralityandartfromalowanimalisticbeginning.Thisdevelopmentissupposedtoproceedas arealisationoftheAbsolute, withoutrequiringtheco-operationofman'swillinapurelymaterialisticbiologicalupward movementaccordingtotheassumedlaw;higherfollowsthe lower,theperfecttheimperfect; firstthesimple,thenthecomplicated.

ObjectiveStudy.

Incontrastwiththis,thehistorical,culture-circlemethodof modernethnologystudiesthecultureofprimitivepeoplesbyobjectivehistoricalmeans.Itgroups certainculturesbyacomplicated technicalprocess'ofethnological interpretation,aroundclture-centres,and,onthebasisofhistoricalrules,bringsthespatialdistributionsandjuxtapositionof culturesintoitsoriginalchronologicalsuccession.Implements, customs,formsofart,kinship organisation,consideredaselementsofculture,arenotforced intoconformitywithapreconceivedsystem,butareordered accordingtotheiroriginalhistoricalcorrelation.

Thisscientificmethodstarted inGermanyunderRatzel(18441905)andwasdevelopedby Graebner(1877-1926),Frobenius (died1940),FatherW.Schmidt (stillliving),Koppers,etc.It nowhasastrongfollowingin America,whereitisassociated withsuchnamesasBoas,Dixon andLowrie.Englandisstill hesitatingaboutit,althoughmen suchasAndrewLangcontributedmuchtoitsdevelopment.The tendencyatpresentamongEnglisharchaeologistsistowork accordingtoamoreandmore strictlyhistoricalmethod.

HarmonisesWithCatholic Thought.

Thishistoricalculturemethod isobjective,andreasonable;itis controlledbyobjectiveprinciples astheyareappliedbythescienceofHistory.Byitsubstantialprogresshasbeenmadein anthropologyduringthelast threedecades,andtheinterest-

Oneoftheneighbourswas AlexanderSerendelli.Hewas thenadissoluteyouth,andhad developedaviolentpassionfor Maria.Shewouldnotlisten tohim,anddidherbesttokeep outofhisway.

OnJuly5,1902,however,he foundheraloneinthehouse.He wasdeterminedthatsheshould giveintohim.Mariarefused tolistenandtoldhim:"What areyouthinkingof,Alexander. Youwillgotohell."

Driventoafuryhestabbed her.Shesufferedfor24hours, thendied.
