earliestencouragementcame fromaCatholicpriest,Rev. FatherMcGovern,whowasengagedinhistoricalresearchin Wyndham. Mr.Hilsonhashadhiswork publishedwidelybothinthe EasternStatesandindieWest. Someofhisbestworkappeared inthewell-knownanthology, "FrolicFair."Hehasalsoissuedtwoslendervolumes,"Gum
tips"and"Fiddle-de-dee,"which havebeenwarmlyreceivedamong
Mr.CharlesNilsoninitiatessomesmallgirlsintothedelights of"Gum-Tips." schoolsintheWest-Wyndham. Suchhasbeentheapparently hiddenanduneventfulcareerof oneofAustralia'sfinestchildren'spoets.
BorninBallarat,Victoria, CharlesHilsoncametotheWest asachild.Hecommencedwritingattheageof11years,receivinggreatencouragementfrom hisfather.Aftermanyeffortsat adultpoetryhewasadvisedto turnhishandtoversesforchildren,andinthishasundoubtedlyfoundhistruemetier.His workhasbeenstronglyirfluenc edbyhisaffectionforthewritingsofWordsworthandWalter delaMare.

ThesecretofMr.Hilson'ssuccesshasbeenhisabilitytowrite aboutchildrenandtheirdoings, notfromtheadultpointofview. butfromthechildren's.For thisreasonDr.Mackanesshas comparedMr.HilsontoA.A. Milne.Hisgiftsofsimplicity, slyhumour,andintimateknowledgeofchildpsychology,and economyofwordsgivehiswritingsacharmalltheirown.He hasfourchildrenofhisown.
Atthemomenttwomorevolumesofverseareinthecourse ofpreparation-oneofchildren's poetryandoneofreligious poems.Havingspent22years intheEducationDepartmentin theruraldistrictsofthisState, Mr.Hilsonstillclaimsthateducationishischiefinterest,equallywithliteratureandreligion. At40Market-street,Sydney,in 1943,theN.S.W.Headquarters oftheE.Y.L.,theofficerented atavalueof£14perweekcomprisedtwofloors.Thetopfloor
wasusedasadancehallwitha supperroomattachedinwhich alargerefrigerator,abusiness type,wassituated.Attachedto thesupperroomwasakitchen withvariousmodernappliances.
Onthefirstfloortheadministrativeofficewastobefound. Herealsowasthelibraryanda largefloorspacewhichwasused forlecturesandclasses.The wallsofthislectureroomwere coveredwithvariousslogansas theexigenciesofthedaydemanded.
Thelibraryat40Marketstreet,Sydney,carriedalarge numberofbooks,mostlyCommunisticpropaganda,variousperiodicalsandmagazines,suchas "Man,""ManJunior,""Pertinent,"andothers.Someofthe Communisticliteratureavailable totheseyounggirlsandboys wasindecent.Atoneperiod leafletsadvertising"SixLecturesonVenerealDiseaseand SexEducation"wereveryprominentlydisplayed,andtheadolescents,bothboysandgirls,were stronglyurgedtoattendthese lecturestobechairedbyMrs. JessieStreet.And,infact,membersoftheE.Y.L.wereallowed intothelecturesatreduced rates.Novelsauthorisedby HavelockEllisandothers.which inmyopinionwereobsceneand immoral,werekeptinthislibrary.

FirstofalltheHolyGhostis thegreatTeacher,whobyHis secretandinwardilluminations takesuptheBookoftheSacred Scripturesandpropoundsitto us.ItisonlybyHishelpand guidancethatwecangraspthe meaningandsignificanceof ChristandofHiswork. "WithoutMe,"saidChrist,"you candonothing.""WithoutMe," theHolyGhostmightsay,"you canunderstandnothing.Itis undertheguidanceandinstructionoftheHolySpiritthatthe wholedoctrinalimplicationsof thelifeofChristhavebeenbuilt upintothatvastschemeoforderedknowledgewhichconstitutestheteachingoftheCatholic Church.UnderHisinspiration likewisehasgrownupthatwondrousunityandhierarchicaldiversityingovernmentwhichrules andguidesinfalliblyandsecurelytheChurchofChrist.Indeed theHolyGhostwasknowntothe earlyFathersasthe"soulof theChurch."
ThisistheHolyGhosttowhom weowetheChurch,andwhose influenceisseenespeciallyinthe choiceofPontiffswhoareto succeedtothechairofPeter. Eachagewithitsdifferentproblemsrequiresadifferentsortof man,adifferenttypeofpersonality,whoiscapableofguidingthe barqueofPetersafelythrough theperilswhichsurroundit.The happychoiceandelectionof eachandeveryPopeisdueto theHolyGhostandtoHimalone.
Notonlyinthechoiceofthe supremePontiffisHisinfluence felt,butalsoinwondrousdoctrineofthePapalinfallibility. Hewassenttoteachusall things,topreserveusfromerror, andwecanthankfullysaythat thishasbeenfulfilled.We canpointwithpridetothelong listsofPopesandCouncilswho havecarriedonwithoutthe slightesterrorthedepositof Faithpasseddowntothemby Christ.
WecanseetheChurchstrugglingagainstthepowersofthe paganworldofGreeceandRome, emergingvictoriousfromthe ruinsofRomancivilisationstrongandvirilewhenenemies fromwithoutandwithinoppressedher,Fortwothousandyears thismiracleoftheChurch'sexistencehasbeenthemainstay andthefountofourcivilisation, andevennow,thoughpersecutioninsomecountriesrageswith aviolenceunheardofandunequalledinthetimesofthebarbarians,welookforwardtothe futurewithcalmandconfident eyes,forthatDivinehelpwas notpromisedforamerethousand yearsorso,butforalltime. Butevengrantingthedepressing growthinthenumberofdivorces withadulteryastheground,the enormoussaleofcontraceptives, theswellingranksofillegitimate childrenandtherest,whyisit thatnoonebotherstocompile thestatisticsofchastity?If sexualimmoralityisasrifeas weareledtobelieve,thensurely theoddandexceptionalthing called"purityoflife"should benewsworthyofbannerheadlines.Perhapssoonweshallsee: "Unsulliedgirlmarriesat30." or"Manresistslustfor75years" Perhapseventhecircusesshall exhibitatroupeofvirginstobe staredatliketheFatLadyor thePigwithfivelegs.
Buttherealfallacyofthe statisticsofsexualimmorality restsinthefailureofthefigures totellushowmanycasesrepresenttheoccasional(andperhaps solitary)sinsofpassion,how manyarehabitualthroughenvironment,weak-mindednessor plainhumanweaknessandhow manyaredeliberate,cold-blooded breachesofthelawofGodand thelawofnature.Untilallthe circumstancesofsuchsinsare knowntouswearenotable justlytoappraisethemoralaspectofourtimes.ButitisinterestingtoreflectuponthedifferentapproachmadebytheCatholicandbythesecularisttothis problem.Forthelatteritisthe sinofactwhichisthegrievous thingandthedamningthing. FortheCatholicsthestatistics willneverreallymeananything becausetothemthesinofthe mindistherealevil:-"Whosoevershalllookonawomanto lustafterher,bathalreadycommittedadulterywithherinhis heart"(Matt.V,27)Thatis whythestatisticscannevergive atruepictureofthemoralposition,becausetheevilpleasure derivedfrompornographicmagazines,fromtheunashamedleeringofthestreet-walker,orfrom thesordidtravestiesoflovein thecinemaisasgreatasinas thecommissionofthesinitself. Therehasalwaysbeenafair supplyofvicetoaddtotheinevitableafflictionsofthislife, buttimewaswhensocietywas characterised(atleastondeathbeds)bytheconsciousnessofsin andthedesireofrepentance. Whatmakesourcivilisationso hideousistheurbanitywith whichtheexistenceofevilis treatedandtheshamelessnessof itscommission.ACatholicmay attimeslapseintoevilthoughts. maybemovedbymorbidcuriosity,butheis,forthemostpart, thoroughlyashamedofhimself later.Herecognisesthathe hasbeengrieviouslyatfaultand suffersacuteembarrassmentif theknowledgeofhisprurience comestothenoticeofothers

Thereisonethingmore: Amongtheseterrifyingfigures quotedfromBritainandAmerica itissafetoassumeaproportion ofCatholics.Andincontemplatingthemoralruinwithinour ownrankswehavecausefor yetgreaterhope.Fornotonly hastheChurchthecertainmeans fortheforgivenessofsin,buteven whenaCatholicceasestobehave hedoesnotceasetobelieve.And whilethelightofFaithstill burns,beittheveriestglow,the possibilityofmoral reconstructionremains.Theunfortunate pagancanrecoverhischastity butitisanincrediblebattle foughtwiththeunaidedhuman will.TheCatholicsinner,however,doesnotbattleunaidedbut ateveryturnissupportedand encouragedbythegraceofGod giventhroughprayer,theMass andtheSacraments.Ifhecannotsucceedthefateoftheworld issealed.

MorerecentlyaCommitteeof theAmericanNeurologicalSocietyworkingunderagrantfrom theCarnegiefoundationmadea studyofsterilisation,withparticularreferencetoitssupposed effectincheckingthespreadof mentaldiseasesandfeeblemindedness.Itsconclusionsareworthyofnote:
(a)Thereisnoproofwhatsoeverthatthefeebleminded propagatemoreprolifically thantheintelligent.
(b)Thatsterilisationwillin nowayreducethecostofcaringforthefeebleminded,and thatnomatterhowmuchitis enforced,theremuststillbeincreasingexpenditureonasylums,epileticcolonies,and otherformsofinstitutional care.

borninDublin,July26,1856,the onlysonofaretiredlawcourts official,whobecameacornmerchant.Hewassenttothe WesleyanConnexionalSchool, Dublin,butleftitattheageof 14toentertheofficeofaDublin landagent.Hismother,atalentedmusician,washischief educationalinfluence.
AfterfiveyearsintheDublin office,utterlydissatisfied,he went,in1876,toLondon.In 1879heabandonedallthought ofacommercialcareer.His familywasgreatlyinneedof hisfinancialassistance,but,as hehimselfwrote,"Ididnot throwmyselfintothestruggle forlife;Ithrewmymotherinto it."Largelysupportedbyher, hegavehimselfuptoliterary activities,livingdesperatelypoor andwithhisworkunrewarded. Thenceforthhemadethedrama therealmediumofhismessage, elaborateprefacestohisplay booksdealingwittily,eloquently, andprovocativelywithallquestionsandmovementsfrommarriagetomilitarism,fromspellingreformtoGod.
RecentlytheUniversityDramaticSocietyheldaOne-Act PlayEveningintheAssembly Hall.Thepiecespresentedwere J.M.Synge's"Riderstothe Sea,"JamesCoppard's"Sordid Story,"andBernardShaw's"AndroclesandtheLion."
"RiderstotheSea"failedto capturetherightatmosphereand waslargelyatalky-talky,unreal portrayalofthetragediesbefallingafamilylivingbytheseaoff thewestcoastofIreland. A braveattemptwasmadetoreproducealocalaccent,andthis wasperhapsthemostnoticeable featureoftheplay.
"SordidStory"wasparticularlyinteresting,becauseofitsoriginalmethodofcomposition.The sceneoftheplayissetinthe mind(representedbythestage set)ofanindividualwhomay bestbedescribedasa"backstreetcitytype,"devoidofany ofthefinerinstinctsorfeelings. ThestoryistoldbytheOperator,representingWill,orReason,orSoul;Memory,representingthePast;theEye,representingVisualMessagesfromthe OutsideWorldtotheBrain;the Ear,representingAuralMessagesfromtheOutsideWorldto theBrain;andFear,Angerand Jealousy,representingThreeInstinctivePassions.
ChristianitywhichiscompletelyunacceptabletoChristians. Shawregardsthepersecutionof thefirstChristiansasanattempt onthepartofthoseentrusted withthepreservationoflawand order(theRomans)tosuppress anattackagainstthatlawand order.Byfollowinganewteachingandrefusingtoconformto thehabitsandcustomsofthe day,theChristianswereper. vertersoftheestablishedway oflife,andtheRomans,quite understandably,tookmeasures topreventthespreadofadoctrinewhichwasconsideredtobe injurioustothepublicgood. Thereisnohintofanything devotionalorinspiringintheattitudeofanyoneofShaw's Christians.Noneofthemnot evenLavinia,whohasmostto sayandwhosecharacterisdepictedasnoble,seemstohave anyclearideaastowhythey arepreparedtosubmittomartyrdom.Certainlytheonlooker atthisplayisnotimpressed withtherealityoftheirattachmenttotheFaith.Theyseem tobemotivatedbyanumberof urges,thebestofwhichisadeterminationnottoweakeninthe faceofdanger-anaturaldesire toretaintheirhonourunder trial. TotheinformedCatholicthe picturedrawnbyShawisso utterlyfantasticthatonehasto pinchoneselffigurativelyinordertobesurethattheplayis reallygoingonandpresentto thesenses.Wereitnotsopalpablyidiotic"Androclesandthe Lion"wouldmeritcondemnation onthescoreofshockingthefeelingsofdecentpeoplewhotreasuretheirreligion;butanyone whoreallyhastheFaithisnot likelytobedisturbedbyShaw's amazingincursionintoafield wherehisquickwithascruelly deceivedhisjudgment. Shaw asatheologianissomethingof alaughing-stock.EvenDean Inge,whosepeculiarreligion oncefoundfavourwithShaw, hasdissociatedhimselffrom Shaw'sslantonChristianity. "HissketchoftheFounder's lifeanddeathispsychologically impossible,"writesthegloomy Dean."Brieflyhe(Shaw)picturesJesusasawandering preacherwho,aftera hishead,'andwenttoJerusalem inthecompanyofafewunarmedpeasantsandwomentoclaim divineorroyalhonoursforHimselfinthepresenceoftheSanhedrinandtheRomangovernor, expectingamiracle."Ifalesserpersonagethanthefamous G.B.S.hadpropoundedsuchtosh itwouldneverhavefoundits wayintoprint,muchlesscirculation.Andthatisasufficient reasonfornotaccording"AndroclesandtheLion"anymore space.

Theplaywaswelldoneand capturedaudienceinterestmost oftheway.Admittedlythere werepassageswhichtendedto bedrawnoutandtedious,but thiswasnofaultoftheplayers, whohandledanunusualtypeof dramawithcommendableskill. Specialcongratulationsaredue totheproducer,ShirleyOffer. AndroclesandtheLion.

inst.,theAustralianBroadcastingCommissionpresentedthe secondofthe1947seriesofOrchestralconcertsattheCapitol Theatre.Followingtheenormousattendanceatthefirstconcert,itwasmostencouragingto allwhohavetheinterestsof greatmusicathearttofindthat thelargetheatrethistimewas practicallypackedrightout.The guestconductor,WarwickBraithwaite,andthepianist,Claudio Arrau,bothreceivedthewarmgion,patriotism,imperialsupremacy,nationalgreatness,etc. Insofarasheispreparedto attackanunrealisticapproach toreality,Shawcommandsour supportandapproval.His "chocolatecreamsoldier"isa typeapproximatingtoreality muchmorecloselythanmanyof theabsurdlyheroicfiguresoffiction,andtheuniversalsceptic hasrenderedaservicetothetheatre-andtoamuchwideraudiencethaneventhetheatre reaches-bypointingthewayto areturntonormalityandtruer perspectives. YetIcannotsaythattheRepertoryperformanceof"Arms andtheMan"impressedme.The fault,Ithink,wasnotentirely theplayers'.Certainlythecast wasalongwayfrombeingthe bestthatcouldhaveattempted theplay,butonemustquestion whetherShaw'sinterminable stretchesofdialogue,cleveras theymaybe,areinthebestinterestsofdrama.Afterall, "Theplay'sthething,"isatag notemptyofmeaning;andwhen dramaissacrificedfordidactic utterances-evenofthebrilliant Shavianvariety-thelossisnot easilymadeup.Itisafact thatthisromanticcomedytook welloverhalf-an-hourtoraise alaugh,and,heresyasitmay sound,oneistemptedtobelieve thatShawasadramatistdoes notringabellwithmodernaudiences.Inthisconnectionitis welltorememberthatdramatistswritefortheirday. MyraHillturnedinthebest workIhaveseenherdo.Notablewastheimprovementin voiceproduction.ErnestClarkeParkerwasalsowelltothefore. Beforeleavingthesubjectof thisplayaltogether,though,it ispertinenttoenquirewhatmotivetheUniversityDramaticSocietycouldhaveinchoosingto produceit.ItisstillmorepertinenttoaskinwhatwayCatholicmembersofthecastand othersconnectedwiththeproductioncanjustifytheirassociationwithsuchanti-Christian stuff.Itwerebadenoughfor anymisguidedChristiantowaste hisorhertimeonit,butCatholics,whohaveanintegratedphilosophyandtowhomothershave learnttolookforalead,makea sorryshowofthemselvesinsuch circumstances.If,asSt.Paul says,weshouldhaveareason forthefaiththat'sinus,then howmuchmoreimportantisit tokeepthefaithanddefendthe faith?
Itisatruthnotalwaysunderstoodthatallwritingiswritingwithapurpose,andjustin caseweshouldforgetitGeorge BernardShawhasahabitof labouringthepointinhisprefacestoplays-Unfailinglyhe explainstousinadvancewhat heisabouttodo.Infact,he isprobablybestknowninliterarycirclesas"amanwhowould writeaverylongprefacetoa veryshortplay." Intheprefaceto"Armsand theMan"Shawexplainsthat thisplayistobetakenasa satireonromanticlove.Heis impatientwithwhathecalls"romanticconvention,"whichdemands,hesays,thatmengoto thetheatretomakefoolishpretencethatrobbery,starvation, disease,crime,drink,war,cruelty,cupidityandalltheother commonplacesofcivilisationare progress,science,morals,reli-
estovationsthathavebeenheard inPerthforalongwhile.
Theorchestraplayedimmeasurablybetterthantheydidatthe firstconcert,andgaveplentyof evidencethatifthewholeorchestrawerekeptpermanentlytogether,theycouldbecomeasresponsivetoagreatconductoras someinstrumentinthehandsof afineplayer.Thoughthegeneralstandardwasveryhigh, therewas,however,stillalack ofsubtlety,andanabsenceof thosecountlesslittleunwritten nuancesthatdefydescription, butwhicharebeauty'slifeand form.
TheRosamundeOverturewas awisechoice,apleasantwork, notsoveryarresting,norsoarrestinglyplayed,butpleasant,a goodmeansofpreparingcold handsfortheexactingtaskthat awaitedtheminTchaikowsky's "RomeoandJuliet."Thisisa lovelywork,andeventhosewho decryTchaikowskyfor"wearing hisheartonhissleeve"mustadmitthewarmsincerityofallthe wonderfulmelodicthought,and glorioustone-paintingfromhis orchestralpalette,which,likethe loveofthetragiclovers,lives andglowsallthroughthework. Theorchestradidwell,butI thinktheywouldhaveresponded iftheconductorhadaskedmore detailandwarmthinhisinterpretation.Asitwas,onefelt alittlefrustratedbytheabsence ofsubtletiesandwarmthin phrasing,thoselittledynamic touchesthatbreathepulsating lifeintoawork.
BrahmsandTchaikowsky thoughtpoorlyofeachother's work,sothereisalwaysalittle ironyinfindingthemshoulder toshoulderinmodernprogrammes.Theirmutualantipathy isdifficulttounderstand,for thoughTchaikowskyisthemost subjectiveofromantics,and Brahmsisdescribedas"romantic-classic,"Tchaikowskyusesa colourfulorchestration and Brahmsismuchmoresombre, thoughthegreatRussian'smusic gushesoutspontaneously an outburstfromanardentchild, whilethegreatGerman'smusic istremendouslythoughtful,mellowandscholarly;yetbothhave agreatdealincommon.They bothwrotemostwonderfulmelodies,bothcouldbedevastatingly sad(onecouldalmostsaythere isinthemboththesametouch ofthemorbid)andagreatdepth offeelingmovesinthemusicof eachofthem.

Catholicscannotbutrejoicetobejoinedatlastinthe mostcrucialanddecisivereligiousissueofallChrisitan historybytheirseparatedbrethren.EversincetheCommunistManifestowasissuedinthelastcenturytheCatholicChurch,asbecametheguardianoftheChristian Faith,hasseenwherethedoctrinesofMarxismwereleadingandhas,fromtheoutset,metthemwithadamantine hostilityandopposition.Thecogent,unanswerable,and fundamentalantipathybetweenChristianityandCommunismwaslucidlyandpowerfullyexpoundedbyPopePius XI.,inhisEncyclicalLetter,"DiviniRedemptoris."Not theleastsignificantpartofthathistoricdocumentwasthe Pope'scalltomenofgoodwilleverywhereintheworldto closetheirranksagainstthemonstrousthingwhichwas notsomuch political socialsystem.as thereignofanti-Christ.ToalargeextentthePope's wordsfellondeafears,andCatholicsweredismayedto remarkprominentpersonalitiesofthenon-Catholicworld inopenbutignorantadmirationoftheSovietandall itstoodfor.Onereflectsuponthewidespreadmischief causedbyDeanHewlittJohnsoninBritainandofBishopBergmanninthiscountry.

ArrivinginSpainin1934,he hadonlycompletedpartofhis coursewhen,duetotheoutbreakofcivilwar,hehadtoreturntoIreland,andwasfinally ordainedinSt.Kieran'sCollege, Kilkenny,fortheDioceseofOssory,onJune9,1940. Answeringacallforvolunteersforatemporarymissionin GreatBritain,hewassentto theArchdioceseofSt.Andrew's andEdinburgh.Duringhis stayinwar-tornScotlandhis cheerfuldispositionandready witendearedhimtothepeople andhewasabletocarryona veryfruitfulapostolate.

SolemnRequiemMasswas celebratedforthereposeofhis soulinSt.Joseph'sChurch,SubiacoonTuesday,May20.Over 50priestsandalargenumberof Sistersandlaitythrongedthe Churchandboreeloquenttestimonytothehighesteemin whichhewasheldintheArchdiocese.

Acommonfault-anditisone towhichagriculturiststhemselvesareprone-isthatofregardingagricultureasafoodproducingindustry.Thatmistakeis understandableenoughinanindustrialisedcommunity,butit leadstoallsortsoffalseconclusions.Theterm,industry,as wehavecometouseitinthe economicsense,denotestheorganisedapplicationofenergy throughtechnicalandlargely mechanisedprocessestoinanimatematerialswiththeobjectof increasingtheirutilitytous. Thusmanufacturingandbuilding areclearlyindustries;soareextractiveactivitiessuchasmining andquarrying;also,inasense, transport,sincetheutilityof articlesisobviouslyincreased whenmovedtothespotwhere theyareneeded.Strictly speaking,then,industrydoesnot produceinthesenseofcreating, allitsmaterialbeingpre-existent.Itincreasesutilitybyprocessesofconversion.These processesarealmostentirelyof humaninventionandremainunderhumancontrol.
Butagriculture,asitsname implies,isessentiallycultural. Itisgenuinelycreativeinthe sensethatitisconcernedwith theformationofnewmaterialinsteadofmerelywithmanipulation.Certainlyitincludesprocessesofconversion-moreparticularlytheconversionoffertilityintofoodstuffs.Butthese aresecondaryto,anddependent on,thecreativeprocessesofNaturebywhichshecombinesinorganicmaterialsandforcesin ordertopropagatelivingorganisms-tocreateandsustainlife. Theseprocessesareimmutable andnotsubjecttotechnological manipulation.Wecultivateor tendthemratherthancontrol them.
Mancannothimselfcombine (asdotheplants)water,sunlight,air,andsoilfertilityto buildandmaintainhisownliving tissues.Hecanliveonlyon thesurplusoftheplantworld. eitherthroughthedirectconsumptionofvegetablematteror throughtheagencyofanimals. Hemust,therefore,maintain breedingstocksbothofplants andanimals,whichagainnecessitatesthemaintenanceofbreedingcapacity-fertilityinthe soil.Agriculture,inshort,is themeanswherebymancultivatesnaturalreproductionin soil,plants,andanimals,sothat hemayhimselfliveandreproduce.Heisineffectaparasite whoselicencetolivedepends strictlyupontheattentionhe givestothewell-beingofhis hosts. Nowthiswell-beingdepends primarilyuponthemaintenance ofNature'sexceedinglycomplex anddelicatesystemofbalances. Butthegoverninglaws,especiallytheprinciplewhichLord NorthmorehascalledtheRule ofReturn,arepreciselythe same.Whatwemustreturnto theland,inexchangeforthe wealthwhichweobtainfromit, isnotonlyallformsoforganic waste,butalsothatdevoted skillandattentiontotheneeds ofsoil,plants,andanimals whichcharacteriseallgoodfarming.Thatisajobwhichno machine,noscientificingenuity, candoforus.

Norhastherebeenanymechanisationonthenutritionside. Thereisnoevidencewhatever thatourmodernwheatsareany morenourishingthanthoseof ourSaxonforbears,orthatour bodyneedsareanydifferent.All thatourelaboratemillingand bakingmachinerycandoisto provideamoresuperficialattractiveloafattheexpenseof thenutritivevalueofthewheat.
Iwantthereforetoputitforwardasaneconomicaxiomthat boththerealvalueandthereal costsofagriculturalwealthare constants,andassucharerelativelyunamenabletoeconomic ortechnologicalmanipulation.
Thereisanotherhighlyimportantdistinctionbetweenagriculturearidindustry.Whilein theoryindustrialexpansionhas nolimits,inpracticeitisconditionedsoonerorlaterbythe naturallimitationsofagriculture. Whataretheselimitations?
Money-power,aggressivefinance,capitalism-callitwhat youlike-hascreatedtheillusion thatbyclevermanipulationand theenforcementofarbitrary financialrules,wecangetsomethingfornothing.Wearenow learning,byexceedinglybitter experience,thatinfactwecannotgetsomethingfornothing, becauseitisaviolationofnaturallaw.Inshort,theunpaid billforcheapfoodisbeginning tobepresented,andthelonger itispostponedthebiggeritwill get.Wehavebeenbuildingup money-capitalbylivingonreal capital,andthatisaprocess whichcanhaveonlyoneend.

Adevotionalpracticewasorigin-atedbyProtestants..Ithasbeen welcomedbyCatholics.Itis rapidlyspreadingthroughoutthe Catholicworld.ThePopeshave blessedit.Theyparticipatein it.Thewholethingisveryremarkable,tosaytheleast.And it'sworthlookinginto.
TheideabeganwiththeRev. PaulJamesFrancis,aminister oftheProtestantEpiscopal ChurchofU.SA.Hehadvery HigkChurchtendencies,andhad foufledanAnglicanreligious orderknownasthe"Societyof theAtonement,"atGraymoor, NewYork.Oneday,whilst thinkingofthesinsoftheworld whichsobadlyneedexpiation, herealisedthattheverydivisionsamongstprofessingChristiansisaglaringsininitself.
So,in1908,throughthecommunity'smagazine,"TheLamp," hepleadedforvolunteerstodevotethemselvestoeightdaysof prayereachyearforthereunion ofChristendom.Heproposed thattheOctavebeobservedfrom January18toJanuary25,purposelyselectingthosedatesbecausetheformeristheFeastof St.Peter'sChairinRome,and thelattertheFeastoftheConversionofSt.Paul.Somehow orother,hefelteventhenthat thecentreofunitywouldhave tobefoundintheHolySee.

Afloodofbookswrittenbythe morethoughtfulProtestantauthorsisto-daypouringfromthe press,deploringthechaoticdivisionsamongstprofessingChristians.BothAnglicansandNonconformistshavetakenupthis theme,urgingthatsuchadiversityofChurchesismanifestly opposedtothewillofChrist; thatallwhoclaimtobelongto Himshouldbelongtooneand thesameunitedChurch;and thatthecryingneedistoawakenasenseofresponsibilityin thismatter.NordotheybelievethateffortstouniteProtestantsamongstthemselvesare enough.QuiterecentlyCanon Broomfield,anAnglican,wrote asfollows:"Ifitispreposterous, asitsurelyis,todenythatRomanCatholicsareChristians, ourdreamofonevisiblyunited Churchmustincludethem.Nor isitenoughthatreunionwith Romeshouldbepartofour dreams.Itmay,indeed,seem a remote,butitshouldhaveits placeinourseriousthoughtand prayer."-"RevelationandReunion,"p.193.

TheCatholicChurchhassteadfastlyandconsistentlyrefused totakepartinsuchgatherings Asearlyas1860,Anglicanshad establishedinEnglandan"AssociationforPromotingtheUnity ofChristendom."In1864Pope PiusIX.declaredthatCatholics inEnglandcouldnotjointhatsocieay.In1865apetition,signedby200Anglicanclergymen, wassenttothePope,begging himtowithdrawthedecesion. Butinvain.PopePiusIX.repliedthattheassociationwas basedonthewrongideathatthe Catholic,AnglicanandGreekOrthodoxChurcheswerebut branchesofoneandthesame Church.NoCatholiccouldacceptthatidea;andtheCatholic Churchdarenotsurrenderor compromiseRevealedTruth.
In1919,over50yearslater, afterhehadbeenvisitedbythe EpiscopalianCommitteepreparingforthe"WorldConference onFaithandOrder"atLausanne,PopeBenedictXV.issued adecreeforbiddingtheparticipationofCatholicsinit,andinsitingthattheprincipleslaid downbyPopePiusIX.in1864 mustbeobserved. Itwaseightyears.however. beforethefirst"WorldConference"couldactuallyassemble. BythattimePopeBenedictXV. haddied,tobesucceededbyPope PiusXI.Butin1927,inre sponsetorenewedsupplications, PiusXI.feltcompelledtoissue arenewedprohibition,forbidding Catholicstoco-operate.
GoodProtestantsfoundthese refusalsverydisheartening.And theystilldo.Thus,in1942. CanonBroomfieldwrote,inthe bookIhavealreadyquoted,"I shouldliketoexpressthedeep regretfeltbymanythattheRomanChurchwillsoseldomtake partinconferenceswithmembersofotherChristianbodies. Itwouldsurelybeagainfrom theRomanpointofviewthat Protestantsshouldunderstand thembetter.The'horror'of Romestillexists.Evennow therearesomewhothinkofher asAntichrist;whoregardRomanCatholiccountriesasgunevangelisedfields';andspeakof RomanoppositiontoProtestant missionsasoppositiontoChristianityitself!.'-"Revelationand Reunion,"p.192.
OnecanunderstandhowdifficultitmustbeforProtestants tocomprehendtheCatholicattitude.ItcannotbethattheCatholicChurchisindifferentto thequestionofunity.StillTess canshebehostiletowardsthe thoughtoftryingtoremedythe divisionsshehaseverdeplored. HasshenotwelcomedthereturntotheunityoftheHolySee ofmanysectionsoftheEastern OrthodoxChurches?Didnot PopeLeoXIII.,in1894,address anEncyclicalLettertothewhole world,pleadingforthereunion ofChristendom?EvenPope BenedictXV.,whenapproached, inMarch,1919,bythesecretary ofthe"WorldConferenceon FaithandOrder"Movement,said thathewasveryhappytohear oftheproposedeffort;hopedthatitwouldbeblessedbyGod; andpromisedhisownprayersto thatend.Yet,inthefollowing Mayofthatsameyear,when grantinganaudiencetoacorn-
prayerisabsolutelyessential. Conversations,discussions,conferences,andnegotiations,will allproveuselesswithoutunited prayer.ButPaulJamesFrancisdidnotseewhatwouldbethe immediateresultofhisapostolate.Hebeganwithhisown community.Eighteenmonths later,theentire"Societyofthe Atonement,"Graymoor,New York,wascorporatelyreceived intotheCatholicChurch,todevoteitselftopropagatingthe "UnityOctave"amongstCatholics!
Christ,"thatallmaybeone, evenasThou,Father,inMe,and IinThee;thattheyalsomay beoneinUs,thattheworldmay knowthatThouhastsentMe" (Jn.XVII.,21).
TheattitudeadoptedbyPope BenedictXV.providesallCatholicswithareminderofCardinalMercier'sdeclarationthat "ifFaithhasitsrights,Charityhasitsduties."Itisonething topointoutthemistakenbasis uponwhichnon-Catholicsbuild theirhopesforreunion.Itis quiteanothertodwelltriumphantlyanduncharitablyon whatseemstousalackofprincipleandlogic.ortoexpressanythingsavouringofamusementor
Butthemovementslidnot, thereupon,ceaseanongstPr)testants.ItcontinuF.Itogrow andflourishintheirmidst.And threeyearsaftertheconversion oftheGraymoorCommunityin NewYork,theAnglicanCommunityofCaldeyinEnglanddecided,whilstcelebratingthe "UnityOctave"devotions,tosubmitinabodytotheHolySee. Movedbytheirexample,aCommunityofAnglicanNunsat MilfordHaven,Wales,tookthe samestep.To-day,inEngland alone,nearly2,000Anglican clergymenobservetheOctavein theirAnglicanchurches;andthe practiceisequallywidespread amongstEpiscopaliansinAmerica.
ChurchUnityOctave.
IntheArchdioceseofSydney theeightdaysprecedingPentecostSundayhavebeenappointedforthispurpose.Thattime oftheyearhasseemedmore suitable,andnobetterprepare, tionforthegreatFeastofPentecostcouldbemade.Eight daysofearnestprayerforthe verypurposesforwhichtheHoly Spiritwasgiveninthefirst place,theunitingofallmenin theonegreatChurch,illuminatedbytheLightofChrist,and filledwithHisimmenseLove, willbringblessingsuntoldupon ourselves,andoninnumerable othersouls.

Thevalueofaeroplanetransportforpriestlyworkintheextensiveinlandareashasbeendemonstratedbyaflightwhich FatherM.Higginsmadefrom BrokenHilltoTibooburra.
contempt.WeCatholicsshould rejoiceatthegrowingrealisationamongstnon-Catholicsof thenecessityforunity.We shouldbethelastintheworld to"quenchthesmokingflax." Weshouldbealwaysreadyto givefullcreditfortheirearnestnessandzealtothosepromoting suchconferences;and,above all,inChristiancharity,weCatholicsshouldofferourprayers thatGodmayblessalldiscussionsandnegotiationsinthe causeofunity,sincerelyundertakenevenbythosestillseparatedfromthetrueChurch.
Thelastthoughtwehavejust expressedbringsustotheques- tionofthe"ChurchUnityOctave."Here,atleast,wasa suggestion,eventhoughmadeby anAnglican,whichCatholics couldwholeheartedlyadopt.
In1908,aswehaveseen,The Rev.PaulJamesFrancis,aProtestantEpiscopalian,hadurgedthattheOctavefromJanuary18 tillJanuary25shouldbedevoted tospecialprayersforthereiterationofunityamongstallpro- fessingChristians.Heagreed withaclosefriendinEngland, anAnglicanclergymannamed SpencerJones,thatwhilstRome cannotchange,allformsofProtestantismhavechanged,are changing,andcanstillfurther change.Andhefirmlybelieved that,withthehelpofprayer, furtherchangeswouldleadback tounitywiththeHolySee.
Forthis,however,hebelieveditessentialthatpeopleshould beeducatedintherightprinciples;thatallideasofmereexpediencyshouldberesolutelyput aside;andthat,notsmallgroups onlyofrepresentatives,butthe wholebodyofthefaithfulinall Churchmustpersonallydesire unityintruth.Hedeclared thathedidnotseehowthismiraclecouldbewroughtsaveby prayer.Specialsermonsduring theOctavemightbehelpfultowardsclarifyingideasandstimulatingzeal.Butthemainpurpose,thepredominantfeatureof "UnityOctavc"mustbeprayer, concertedandearnestprayer, thattheHolySpiritmightenlightenthemindsanddisposethe heartsofallmeneverywhere.

OnSaturdayeveningpicture:, wereshownatSt.Ildephonsus' College,andonSundaymorning theLordAbbotcelebratedMass inSt.Gertrude'sCollegeChapel. AfterHighMassat9.30a.m., HisLordshipgraciouslyreceived thevisitors,andhehopedthat ourenthusiasmwouldnotbe dampenedbytherain,whichwas ofsomuchbenefittotheCommunity.AtouroftheChurch andthenativecollegesfollowed.
DuringtheafternoonabaseballmatchwasarrangedatSt. Gertrude's,Visitorsv.College, endinginvictorytotheCollege. Afternoonteawasservedbythe Sisters,andapupilsgaveafew musicalitems,whichbroughtto acloseaverypleasantafternoon.

Thereisasecondsacramentin theconferringofwhichanordainedministerisnotnecessary, the,SacramentofMatrimony.As youprobablyknow,intheSacramentofMatrimony,theman andwomanwhoarecontractingmatrimonyadministerthesacramenttooneanother.The priest,whosepresence,when oneatleastofthepartiesis aCatholic,isrequiredforvalidity,istheresimplyinthecapac- ityofanofficialwitness.Besidesactingasawitness,healso blessesthemarriage,butheis nottheministerofthesacrament.Asregardsthosewho arevalidlybaptisedbuthavenot beenbroughtupasCatholics,the Churchdoesnotrequirethepresenceofapriestattheirmarriage.Henceiftwobaptised non-Catholics,whoarenothinderedfrommarryingoneanother byanyinvalidatingimpediment, exchangetruematrimonialconsent,theyarevalidlymarriedin theevesoftheChurchwhether theritetookplaceinthepresenceofanon-Catholicclergymanornot.Itistheconsent whichmakesthematrimonial

Onceuponatimetherewasa manwholivedwithoneoldservantinalittlecottageinthe country.Hehadnowifeand nochildren;allhisbrothersand sistersweredead;exceptthe oldwomanwholookedafterhis cottage,madehisbed,andcookedhismeals,therewasnoone tobefondofthissolitaryman.
Buthewasnotunhappy.He hadadogcalledDon,thefaithfulcompanionofallhiswalks. Youwillbepleasedtoknow, Iamsure,thatourworkforthe Bushiesisbeingappreciated.I recentlyhadoccasiontogointo thecountry-downSouth-andI wasthrilledtohearpeoplespeakinginglowingtermsofthegood workbeingdonebytheReligious HolidaySchoolsconductedfrom timetotime.TheseBushies' Schoolsarejustonemanifestation-albeitaveryimportantone -ofthegeneralschemeforthe 'religiouseducationofchildren whoarenotsofortunateastobe favouredwithconstantinstructionfromthegoodSistersand BrotherswhostaffourCatholic schools.Itisencouragingto knowthatparentsfullyappreciatewhatisbeingdoneforthe children;but,ifImaybegloomy foramoment,Idothinkthat therearesomeamongourCatholictownspeople-Imeanthe CatholicpopulationofthecentreswheretheSchoolsareheldwhomightwithadvantagehold anexaminationofconscienceand seewhethertheyareprepared todotheirbitinfurtheringthe aimsoftheBusbies'Scheme. Yousee,itsometiiiiesbecomes necessaryforCatholicfamiliesto co-operateinextendinghospitalitytothechildrenwhoare broughtinfromoutlyingareas. WhilemostgoodCatholicsrespondreadilyandmakebeds availablewhennecessary,yetit mustbesaidthattherearesome whoareslowandevenveryreluctanttodowhattheymightdo veryeasily. Weshouldbe quickandgraciouswithour Christiancharity.OurLordhas saidthatnotevenacupofwater giveninHisNameshallgowithoutitsreward.Wemaybesure thatGodwillnotbeoutdonein generosity.Thereisamoral foreveryoneinthestorywhich appearsonthispagethisweek.
