EvilConsequencesofDrunkenness

Amongstallthesinswhich bringsorrowintotheheartsand homesofmen,thoseofgluttony andintemperanceholdaveryprominentposition.Indeed,we mightevensaythatmorehomes havebeenbrokenup,morelives andcareersruined,bythesesins thanbyanyother.

Gluttonyhasbeendefinedas "aninordinateindulgencein foodordrink." Byinordinate wemeanthattheseGod-given commoditieswhichweremeant tohelpusinthislife, areused inawayormeasureorfora purposecontrarytothelawsof Gedandreason.

Reasonitselfmustbeguided byatwofoldstandard,thatof:

(a)Thenecessitiesofbodily healthandstrength,and(b),the well-beingofsocietyofwhich manisamemberandforwhose goodhemustconstantlystrive.

MaliceofGluttony.

Therealmotiveofgluttony liesinitsinordinatecharacterinitsperversionanddistortion ofthepurposeandendfor whichGodhasgivenusfoodand drink.

Gluttonyisofitselfavenial sin,butasinthecaseofall capitalsins,itoftenindeedbecomesamortalsin.

Thiscouldhappen, forexample, ifintemperanceinfoodand drinkledamantoviolatepre. ceptssuchasthoseoffastand abstinence, whichbindunder painofmortalsin.Alsoifhe seriouslyinjuredhishealthby theseexcessesandthusmade himselfunfittopursuehisordinaryvocationinlife.

Itwouldalsobeamortalsin ifamanmadeeatinganddrinkinganendinthemselves,and notameans;inotherwords,to placehimselfamongstthosemen "whoseGodistheirbelly."

(Phil.3:19.) InAustraliathesinofgluttony,asfarasfoodgoes,iscomparativelyrare.Theremaybe isolatedcaseswherethismay happen,butthiswouldbeanexceptionratherthantherule.

Lest,however,wemaybeinclinedtominimisethegravityof thissin,itwouldbewelltorememberthattheonlycrimethat therichman,Dives,intheparableofthebeggarLazarus,was chargedwith,wasthat"hefeastedsumptuouslyeveryday,"and forthis,theScripturestellsus, "hewasburiedinhell."(Luke 16.22.)

Farmoreserious,however, andsoprevalentthatitisalmost becominganationalcursein Australia,isthesinofdrunkenness.

Letusmakequiteclearthe factthatdrinkisnotevilinitself.Itis,however,oneofour greatestnationalevilsinits abuse."Winewascreatedfrom thebeginningtomakemanjoyfulandnottomakehimdrunk."

(Ertl.31;35ss.)

Examplesofthismaybeseen throughoutthecitystreetson anynightoftheweek.Mendegradedlowerthanthelevelof animals, bringingshameupon themselvesanddishonourupon theircountry.

Whenweconsiderthat,accord. ingtolatestfiguresavailable, wespendcloseonfiftymillion poundsannuallyondrink,andin W.A.thisrisestothetrulyremarkablefigureofnearlynine poundsperheadofpopulation,is itanywonderthatinW.A.we haveoverfourthousandconvictionsperyearinourcourtson thechargeofdrunkennessalone.

TwoKindsofDrunkenness.

Theologiansdistinguishtwo kindsofdrunkenness.First, thereis"complete"drunkenness, whichissuchastodeprivea manoftheuseofreason,sothat hecannolongerdistinguishbetweenwhatisrightandwrong. Thisisofitselfamortalsin. Itsmalicedoesnotconsistmerelyindeprivingoneselfoftheuse ofreason,foritisallowedto dothisforajustandreasonable cause(asinthecaseofa patienthavingananaestheticfor anoperation),butratherindeprivingoneselfoftheuseofrea-

ConsequencesofIntemperance.

Theevilconsequencesof drunkennessaremanifold. Each andeveryoneofushasseen them, andespeciallypriestsin theirworkforthecareofsouls meettragicconsequencesof drinkalmosteveryday.

Familieshavebeenbroughtto thevergeofpovertybythe squanderingofmoneyondrink thatshouldbeusedforthepaymentofjustdebtsandforthe educationandcareofthefamily.

Lossofhonourandreputation areamongstthefirstfruitsof thisevil, anditisheartrending sometimestoseeinnocentwives orhusbands, asthecasemaybe, tryingtosavethehonourofthe familywhichisjeopardisedby theexcessesoftheothermembersofthehousehold.

Discordandsorrowarebrought intohomesthatwereonce happy,andmarriagesbythe thousandhavebeenwreckedby thecurseofdrink.

ProfanationoftheLord'sDay isanothertoofrequentconsequence.Howoftendoesithappenthatpersonsareunableto attendtotheirreligiousduties onaccountofexcessesonthe previousnight,andhowoften doesithappenthatSunday, whichwasmeanttobeadayof rest,isonlyanexcuseandopportunityforselfindulgence.
