Ishouldliketo hearhowyouexplainthediffi cultyitpresents."
A.WithpleasureIshallread thetextsandthengiveyouthe rightexplanationofthem.
Thefirstpassagereferredto isfromSt.Matthew12,46-50: "Ashewasyetspeakingtothe multitudes,beholdhismother andhisbrethrenstoodwithout, seekingtospeaktohim.And onesaiduntohim:Beholdthy motherandthybrethrenstand without,seekingthee.Andhe answeringhimthattoldhim said:Whoismymotherand whoaremybrethren?And stretchingforthhishandtowards hisdisciples,hesaid:Beholdmy motherandmybrethren.For whosoevershalldothewillof myFatherthatisinheavenhe ismybrotherandsisterand mother."
ThepassagefromSt.Mark reads(3,31-35):"Andhismother andhisbrethrencameand,standingwithout,sentuntohimcallinghim.Andthemultitudesat abouthim.Andtheysayto him:Beholdthymotherandthy brethrenwithout,seekforthee.
Andansweringthem,hesaid: Whoismymotherandmybreth ren?Andlookingroundabout onthemwhosatabouthimhe smith:Beholdmymotherand mybrethren.Forwhosoever shalldothewillofGod,heismy brotherandsisterandmother"
Itisatruismthatbefore startingtoexplainatext,itis necessarytohaveaclearideaof thecontext.Inthecaseofthe incidentweareconsidering,though,hereandthere,adetail maybedifficulttodecidewith certainty;themainfeaturesare quiteclear.Aftertheinitial enthusiasmwithwhichtheearly preachingofChristwasreceived inGallilee,oppositiontoHim begantomakeitselffelt.This camefromtwowidelydifferent sources,Hiskinsfolkandthe Pharisees.NeitherHiskinsfolk northePhariseesbelievedin Him.Theoppositionandgrowinghostilityofthepowerful PhariseescouldhaveseriousconsequencesforHimandforHis kinsfolk.Itwasnaturalthat thisthoughtshoulddisturbthe latter.Theyweredisturbedby whattheyconsideredhisreligiousexaltationwithitscondemnationofthepeopleofCapharnaum;theyhopedtorestoreorderbytakingJesusawaywith them.ThisincredulityofOur Lord'srelativesislamentablein theextreme.Itisnot,however. altogetherunintelligible.Our
spentintheobscurelifeofalittlecommunity,anditwasnaturalthatHiskinsmenandfellowvillagersshouldlookonHimas oneofthemselves,anunlettered artisan.Whentheysuddenly sawHimtraversingthecountry asamiracle-workingprophet, theywereseizedwithastonishment.ToreadjusttheirjudgmentofHimwasmorethan mostofthemcoulddo.From thispointofview,faithfound farlessobstaclesamongstrangerstowhomJesuswaspreviouslyunknown.Iftherewas,indeed,nothingtogiveHimany specialclaimontheirallegiance, Hewasnot,atleast,alreadyclassifiedintheirminds. SoOur Lord,whohadmetwithsuchan enthusiasticwelcomeonthelakeside,wasdestinedtofailat Nazarethfromtheverystart. ThisbiasofHisfellow-citizens inHisregardwasstillstronger andmorerootedamongthoseof Hisownkin.Therecanbeno questionhereofOurLadyorSt. Joseph.TheyhadbothbeenadmittedintotheDivinesecret; buttheothers,eventhosenearest toChrist,suspectednothingof thesuperhumandignityofthis simpleartisan,whohadalways livedwiththemonsuchfamiliar terms.NothinginHislife,so muchthesameastheirs,could betrayanoriginordestiny otherthantheirown.
Consequentlytheywerenot convincedeitherbytheteaching orbythemiraclesofChrist.At theveryendofHisministry,on theeveofthelastFeastofthe Tabernacle,theysoughtHimout andsaidtoHim: "Passfromhenceandgointo Judea:thatthydisciplesalso mayseethyworkswhichthou dost.Forthereisnomanthat dothanythinginsecret.andhe himselfseekethtobeknown openly.Ifthoudothesethings manifestthyselftotheworld."
(JohnVII.,3-4.)AndtheEvangelistadds:"ForneitherdidHis brethrenbelieveinHim."
These,then,arethestubborn unbelieverswithwhoseinterventionweareconcernedinthepassagesyouhavecited.Theiractionisshockingandpainful enough.Notonlydoesitsupposeacompletelackoffaith, butalsothewishtodragHim awayfromHisministry,even againstHiswill,andtobring Himbacktowhatthesepeople thoughtareasonableandsensiblelife.
WhatwasMary'sattitudeto thematter?Itisobviousthat noChristianwouldcastamoment'sdoubtonhersupremerespectforherSonandHerfaith inHim.SheknewwhoHewas andthemissionHehadtofulfil, and;tisthereforeclearthatshe couldnotassociateherselfwith Hiskinsfolk'sattitude,andyetit isclearthatshewaspresent withthemonthisoccasion.Is itnotreasonabletosupposethat byaccompanyingthemshehoped towardofftheconflictbetween themandherSon.Subsequent eventsdolendcolourtothissup- position.Inthecourseof time,severalofHiskinsfolkdid cometobelieveinHim. We seesomeofthemwithHis MotheratthefootoftheCross. Again,onthemorrowoftheAscension,theinfantChurchincludednotonlytheApostles withthewomenandtheMother ofJesus,butHisbrethrenas well.JesusHimselfcould scarcelyhavereachedthesestubbornsouls,whohadnotjoined
thebandofHisdisciples,and who,farfromadmittingHisauthority,claimedtherighttoimposetheirownonHim;butMary wasalwayswiththem,andher influencewasboundeventuallyto enlightentheirblindnessand bendtheirpride.
Butifshewastofulfilthepart ofbringingtogetherherSonand themembersofHisfamily,it wasnecessarythatsheshould notseparateherselffromthem, butshouldbeattheirside,cost whatitmight,inthestepsthey took,painfulastheymightbeto herself.Shehadtoacceptthe confusionthattheseproceedings broughtuponheraswellasupon Hiskinsfolk.
