EXCHANGEOFAPOSTOLIC LETTERS

Yousayinyourletter:

"Theremusthavebeencountless writingspassingroundatthe sametime?Howcanwetell whichareinspiredandwhich arenot?"

A.:Yes.Itistruethatthere aremanywritingsofthetime thathavecomedowntous,often stylingthemselvesGospelsand EpistlesbythisorthatApostle ordiscipleofOurLord,but whichwerenotreceivedintothe Canonofinspiredwritings. 1 shalltellyou,therefore,now, howbygradualandsureguidancetheHolySpiritofGod broughttheChurchtoknowthe divinely-inspiredbooksfromthe rest.

WerecalltheconcretecircumstancesinwhichtheN.T. bookswerefirstcirculated.We aresoaccustomedtoseeingthe 27booksoftheN.T.boundtogetherinasinglevolumethat wesometimesforgetthateach ofthesebookshasitsownhistory.Eachbookwasissuedseparatelyandevenwhentheyhad allbeenissued,say,bytheyear 110A.D.,completecollections wouldbecomparativelyfew.Afterall,thewrittenwordcame onlysecondinimportance;the faithcamebyhearing,notby reading.Moreover,thefirstcenturydidnotknowtheartof printing,norofeasyandrapid communication.Themorewerealisethatbookswerescarceand theircirculationslow,thebetter weunderstandthehistoryofthe CanonoftheNewTestament.

St.Paul,forinstance,would writealettertoaparticular churchandaskthemtopassit on.ThisseemsclearfromColossians-iv.16-"Andwhenthis lettershallhavebeenreadwith you,causethatitbereadalso inthechurchoftheLaodiceans; andthatyoureadthatwhichis oftheLaodiceans."Insuchexchangesbetweenneighbouring communitiesofChristianswe canseethebeginningofaNew Testamentcollection.Againfrom themannerinwhichSt.Peter speaksofSt.Paul'slettersitis clearthatatleastapartialcollectionofthemmusthavebeen knowntohisreaders.Hesays: Asalsoourmostdearbrother Paul,accordingtothewisdom giventohim,haswrittento you;asalsoinallhisepistles, speakinginthemofthesethings, inwhicharecertainthingshard tounderstand,whichtheunstable andtheunlearnedwrest,asthey doalsotheotherscriptures,to theirowndestruction."Pet.iii.1516.Wemaynoteinpassingthat St.PeterputsSt.Paul'sletters onthelevelwiththeO.T.and thatheissuesawarningagainst thedangersofincompetentinterpretation.

HOWTHENEWTESTAMENT BOOKSWERECOLLECTED

Itseemsonlyreasonableto believethatthemostimportant Christiancommunitieswouldbe thefirsttopossessacomplete NewTestament.Smallercommunities, especiallyinremote places.mightforsometimehave

butafewofthebooks. The simpleN.T.libraryofanearly Christiancommunitywouldprobablyconsistofcopiesofthe GospelsandofthemoreimportantepistlesofSt.Paul.As timewentonthecollectionwould grow.AnotherepistleofSt.Paul would beacceptedreadily enough, butintheabsenceofa definiteguaranteetheremightbe somehesitationaboutaccepting thewritingsofanApostleless wellknown.Thuswecanunderstandhowaparticularcommunitymightbeslowtoacceptthe EpistleofSt.John.Itisalso clearthatanEpistleofobvious dogmaticimportancewouldfind admissionmorereadilythanone ofamoreprivatecharacter. Andfinallywemustnotethat cautionwouldincreasewhenthe apocryphalwritingscameinto circulation.Theapostolicauthorshiporapprobationofaparticularbooknotbeingalways immediatelyevident, genuine booksmighteasilybequestioned andperhapsevenrejectedbya particularcommunity.

Inparticularsevenbookswere forcedtoawaitdefiniteinclusion intheCanon.TheywereHebrews,James,Jude,2Peter,2 and3John,andApocalypse.We havealreadyseenthatsuch doubtanddiscussionaroseonly inthecaseofbookswhichseemed tolackapostolicauthorshipor apostolicapprobation.Bythe endofthesecondcenturyall ourbooksoftheN.T.weregenerallyknownandtheinspirationof atleasttheprincipalbooksuniversallyacceptedafterconsidered judgmenthadbeenpassed. From thebeginningofthethirdcenturytothemiddleofthefourth centurywasaperiodofexaminationanddiscussionoftheremainingbooks.ifmostofthesehad beenfamiliartocomparatively few, thereasonsareobvious. Somewereverybrief, orofslight dogmaticimportance, andconsequentlywerenotsofrequently quoted.Otherscametobesuspectedforamorepositiverea-on;theywerequotedbyhereticsinsupportoffalsedoctrines. Wecaneasilyunderstandhow hepatronageoftheheretics wouldengenderaprejudice,at leastinaparticularcommunity, eitheragainstabookthatwas likelytobeacceptedoragainst abookthathadalreadybeen acceptedbyall.

UNANIMITYABOUTTHE CANONOFSCRIPTURES

OfthistheApocalypseisan instructiveexample.Uptothe thirdcenturytherewasscarcely asinglevoicetodenythatit wasaninspiredbookwrittenby St.John.Foritsacceptanceat varioustimesbyvarious churchesbothintheEastand intheWestwehaveoverwhelmingevidenceinthewritingsof suchauthoritiesasSt.Justin, St.Irenaeus,St.Hippolytus,ClementofAlexandria,Tertullian andOrigen.Theninthethird centurythetraciitionisstrangely interrupted.Whenthetwentieth chapterwasbeingquotedinsupportoftheMillenarianheresy, St.DenisofAlexandriasought toremovethedifficultybydenyingthatthebookhadbeenwrittenbySt.John,andasthe errorspreadthedenialofJohn's authorshipinevitablybecamea denialofthebook'sinspiration. Itwassometimebeforethe Apocalypseregaineditsposition; eveninthefourthcenturyEusebiusofCaesareawasundecided astowhereheshouldplaceit.

Thefinalperiodinthehistory oftheCanonlastedfromthe middleofthefourthtotheearly partofthefifthcentury. This wastheperiodofgeneralagreement.Thedifficultieswhichparticularchurcheshadfeltatcertainperiodsregardingoneor otherofthebooksnowdisappeared.

.

Misunderstandingsaboutthe pureapostolictraditionhadbeen clearedup;mencouldrealise nowthatnouncanonicalbook hadevenbeenuniversallyacceptedandnocanonicalbook universallysetaside;theycould pointtothegreatnamesofmen likeIrenaeus,ClementofAlexandria,HyppolytusTertullian andOrigen, whomnolocalor particularcircumstanceshad causedtodeviatefromthetrue tradition.Thusbythebeginning ofthefifthcenturyunanimity wasreachedandtheN.T.canon thenreceivedwasthesameas ourcanontoday.Ithadbecome cleartoeveryonethatDivine traditioncontainedtherevelationoftheinspirationofjust thosebookswhichmakeupour NewTestament.
