His Grace Returns From Europe

TowelcomeHisGracethe Archbishoponhisreturnfrom Europe,aLiturgicalReception wastenderedtohimonSaturakaylastinSt.Mary'sCathedral.

HisGracewasmetattheDoor oftheCathedralbytheAdministrator(theVeryRev.Dr.Kenaedy),theclergyandthestudentsofSt.Charles'Seminary. Theythenprecededhimupthe aisleoftheCathedraltothe sanctuary,whereHisGrace kneltin AltarprayerbeforetheHigh priortotakinghisseat enthethrone.Hewasattended bytheRt.Rev.Monsignor MoloneyandtheVev.Rev.E. Moss.

Afterabriefceremony,the AdministratordeliveredanaddressofwelcometoHisGrace, inwhichhesaid:

Theactiontakenagainstthe11itnessesofJehovahby MauriceDuplessis,PremierofQuebec,hasbecomesobeclouded bypolitical,racialandreligiouscontroversyastheresultof numerousstatementsfrompersonsofallshadesofopinion,that thetruefactsarepracticallylosttothegeneralpublicoutside theprovinceofQuebec.

LegalActionTaken

PremierDuplessis,asheadof theQuebecGovernment,and alsoastheAttorney-Generalof theprovince,tooklegalaction againstthewitnessesatthedemandofthousandsofoutraged residentsoftheProvinceof Quebec.

SincetheJehovahdisciples hadbeendeclaredanillegalorganisationduringthewarbythe DominionGovernmentbecause ofallegedlyseditiousviews,Mr. Duplessisgaveinstructionsthat thelawbeenforcedagainstthe sect,hopingtherebytoprotect thepeopleofQuebecagainst furtherannoyance.Inashort timemanyofthewitnesseswere broughttocourttoanswer chargesoflibelandsedition basedonmatterwhichappeared intheirpublications.Agreat numberofthefollowerswere alsoarrestedfordistributing printedliteraturewithoutob tainingtherequiredpedler's license.

TheQuebecGovernment'saclionmetwithgeneralapproval frombothCatholicandnonCatholiccircles.,butarecent movebyMr.Duplessishas arousedastormofcontroversy. ThePremiercancelledaliquor licenseheldbyFrankBoncarelli, aMontrealrestauranteurwhois generallyregardedasoneofthe leadingmembersofthesectin Quebecandwhohasfinanced manyofitsventuresinthe province.

Mr.Dupleasisimmediately justifiedhisactionbypointing cutthatMr.Roncarellisupports manyofthesect's"seditious" activitiesby,fundsreceived throughthesaleofliquorsmade invirtueofaspeciallicenseor privilegeoftheState.Consequently.thePremierargued,the continuanceofthislicensebythe StatewouldmaketheStatean accompliceinMx.Roncarelli's supportofthesect.

CatholicOpposition

However,othersconsideredMr. Duplessis'sactionunwarranted The"CanadianRegister,"theofficialCatholicweeklyforthe ArchdiocessesofToronto,KingstonandOttawaandthediocesesofPembrokeandNelson, aswellastherecognisedEnglishlanguageCatholicweekly fortheArchdioceseofMontreal, declareditselfinagreement "withMr.Duplessis'sgeneral aim(restrainingobjectionable activitiesofthewitnesses),"but added:"Wedisagreemost stronglywiththemethodshe hasadopted.Wecannotcondone thepunitiveuseofthediscretionarypowerbyanexecutive branchofourGovernment.

EnemiesoftheProvince

Ontheotherhand,prominent organisationsandpapershave cometothesupportofthe Premier.

Statedaleadingeditorialin theQuebecChronicle-Telegraph: "TheonlyfaultofMr.Duplessis asapolitician-ifitbeafaultisthatheistoocandidand straightforward.Ifhehadwishcoto'punish'Roncarelli,there wasnoneedforhimtotellthe newspaperswhathehaddone anditwouldhavebeeneasyfor himtocutoffRoncarelli'ssupply ofliquoronthegroundofshortages-whichactuallyexistwithoutcuttingoffthelicense. ActuallythePremierproceeded inthemannerthathefeltitto behisdutytoproceedandannouncedwhathehaddone."

"Itisaglaringanomaly," thepapersaid,"thatonewhois thelicensedagentoftheprovinceshouldatthesametime persistentlylendaidandcomfort totheenemiesoftheprovince. Wehavepointedoutthatoneis supposedtobelaw-abidingand ofdesirablecharacterinorder toobtainalicense.Ifanyone seriouslypretends,then,thatan individualwhopresidesoverralliesoftheWitnessesofJehovah andwho'springs'themfrom gaolbythehundredwhenarrestedforseditiouslibel,isso qualified,wecanonlysaythat 'wehaveaverypooropinionof hisjudgment."

TheDiocesanCommitteeof CatholicActionofMontrealhas congratulatedthePremieronhis campaignagainsttheJehovah sect.Signedby,hecommittee's director,Msgr.AlbertValois,the lettertoMr.Duplessisapplaudedhis"energeticdeclarations," andconsideredhisactionsas thoseofa"truestatesman,solicitousofthereligiousandcivil welfareoftheprovince."

QuebecHierarchyCondemns Witnesses

The"anarchicalmoves"ofthe Jehovah'sWitnessessectwere characterisedas"dangerousin timesofpeaceasinwar,"ina statementissuedbytheHierarchyofthecivilprovinceof Quebec,whichreiteratedsentimentsthattheBishopshadexpressedduringthewar.

TheBishops'statementwas issuedattheresidenceofthe Cardinal-ArchbishopofQuebec. Thestatementread:"InSeptember,1943,whenourcountry wasatwar,theassemblyof theArchbishopsandBishopsof

thecivilprovinceofQuebec alreadywasconcernedaboutthe subversiveeffectsoftheWitnessesofJehovah,andinformed thecivilauthoritiestothis effect."

AnarchicalMoves

Thestatementcontinuedthat theBishopsonlyrecentlyhad conductedanothermeetinghere and"themembersofthesame Hierarchywishtoaffirmthat theyhavenotchangedtheir viewssincethattime,andthey considerittheirdutytoagain denouncetheanarchicalmoves ofthissect,dangerousintimes ofpeaceasinwar."

Earlier,awarningagainstthe "hereticalpropaganda"ofthe JehovahWitnesseswasissued fromtheoirweofHisEminence RodrigueCardinalVilleneuve, lateArchbishopofQuebec.

"Thefaithfulhaveoftenbeer warnedagainsthereticalpropaganda,andparticularlythat whichprofanestheHolyScrip turesbyfantasticandpernicious interpretations,"thestatement declared."Furthermore,thecampaignofChristianmoralitynow underwayisapplicableamong otherthingstotheprotectionof thefaithfulagainstallliterature prejudicialtofaithandmorals.

"ItisevidentthattheWitnessesofJehovahactuallyare makingeffortstogainmore sympathisers.Weareconfident thatthefaithfulwillunderstand thegravedangerofapropagandaassubversivefroma socialpointofviewasfroma religiouspointofview."

Severalpoliticalgroups,includingtheCommunists,have capitalisedonthesituationand havelabelledMr.Duplessisa Fascist.

A.:Asyouknow,theMass goesbacktotheinstitutionof theHolyEucharistbyChristOur Lord.WhenpriestssayMass theyarecarryingoutHisinjunction:"Dethisincommemorationofme."Inthebeginning theApostles,andtheBishops consecratedbythem,celebrated Massintheordinaryclothesof thetime.TheChurchdidnot actuallyinventspecialgarments orvestmentsforuseatthe altar.ThepriestusedhisordinaryclothestosayMass,but afteratimethecustomgrew ofkeepingaspecial,probably ratherbetter,setforthesefunctions.Fashionsindressarealwayschangingandsincethe garmentssetasideforuseatthe altarwereusedfornoother purposetheylastedlongerthan wouldotherwisehavebeenthe case.Theresultwasthatpeople becameusedtoseeingrather old-fashionedgarmentsonthe priestwhilecelebratingthe sacredmysteries.Afterawhile itwouldhaveseemedunfitting touseanyotherstyleofcostume.Sothestyleofthegarmentsusedatthealtarbecame practicallyfixed.Thesuccessive changesoffashionhavegoneon forsomanycenturiesnow,that thevestmentsusedatMassno longerbearanyresemblanceto laydress.Thereisanotherfactorwhichwasatwork.The faithfulnaturallywishedthat thepriestsatthealtarshouldbe vestedinamannerbefittingthe ceremonieswhichhehadto performandthepracticegrew upofmakingthevestmentsas beautifulaspossible.Inthe oourseoftimeeveryformof ornamentation,thatthedevout mindcoulddevise,hasbeenused toenrichthepriestlyvestments. 1.Thealb,alongwhitegarmentreachingtotheankles. Thisisreallynothingmoreor lessthantheundergarmentof ancienttimes.Civiliansthen woresuchatunicreachingto thefeet,whilethatwornbysoldierscameonlytotheknees. itisfastentsimildthewaist byagirdleusuallycalledthe cincture.

Perhapsyou,"Interested,"or someotherofmylistenersmay recallthepicturesintheRoman HistoriesorintheLatinAuthorsyobhadatschool.Youmay wonderwhythemostdistinctive ofRomangarments-thetogahasnot.survivedinsomeform ofliturgicalgarments.Theanswertothatquestionisinteresting.Thetogawasthedistinctivedressofthosewhoenjoyed therightsofRomancitizenship. Comparativelyfewoftheearly ChristianswereRomanCitizens. Anearlywriter,Toltullian,describestheconflictbetween paganismandChristianityas thecontestbetweenthetoga andthedistinctivelyChristian dressthepallium.

Justonefurtherquestionwhile onthissubject.Youmightask: "FromwhatperiodoftheRomanEmpiredothesevestments date?"

Religiouslyourageisanopen seasonforexegetes.Allthe wild-eyedsectsfromJehovah's WitnessestotheNewApostolic Churchcaniiroveconclusively fromtheScripturesthatthe PopeistheScarletWomanor theseven-hornedbeastorNumber666oftheApocalypse.Likewisetheycanillustratethatpain isa"figmentummentis,"that childrenshouldnotbebaptised, thatloyaltytothetemporalpowerissinfulorthatthebusiness oflovingGodisjusttooeasy. Similarlyotherscanprovethe exactcontraries.Iwouldnotcare toput.ProfessorMurdochin thisgeneralcategory,forwhile heisquiteaswrongasanyof them,heisnotsosweeping,and hisonlydogmafavoursnondogmatism.Recentlyhoweverhe turnedfromtheexpositionofthe Scripturestothescarcelyless difficultsubjectoftheexpositionoftheFathersandinparti- culartothatphraseoftheApostles'Creed:"Ibelieveinthe HolyCatholicChurch."

TheProfessorprefacedhisexpositionbyconjecturingthathis answerwouldmakesomepeople "furiouslyangry."SincehisanswerseemedmainlydirectedagainsttheCatholicChurchIcannotbutfeelthattheProfessor ,over-estimatedhispowersalittle FormostCatholicswouldreact inwearinessratherthaninangertotheProfessor'smodernisticre-hash.Iftherewereany reallyruffledfeelingsthey wouldprobablybeamongthe Apostlesatseeingtheircreed iitvertedintothemostbarren negation.

WhenProfessorMurdochsets outtodiscussanarticleonthe Apostles'creed,heoughttoremember(howeverinteresting hisowninterpretationmaybe) thatheisabouttodiscusssomethingwhichsincethedaysof theApostleshasbeenthefaith ofunitedChristendom.Forthe sake,too,ofgenuinehistorical scholarshipheoughtalsocon-

fessthathisinterpretationhad nosupportofanykindfrom Apostolictimestothe16thcentury,whentheprincipleofprivateinterpretationinreligious matterssetinmotiontheprocessofdisintegrationwhichhas endedinsuchfatuitiesasthe Professorexpounds.Therewere fromtimetotimesmallgroups ofpeoplewithinChristendom whowerequicklydubbedhereticsbypeoplewhoheldtothe oniversalagreementaboutthe meaningoftheApostles'Creed.

TheProfessor'sreligiouspositionisinferiortothatofthe olderhereticsinthatsomeof them.anyway,didbelievethey werejustifiedbysomeinterior promptingoftheHolyspirit, whereastheProfessor'sreligion "drawsitspower fromthe conscienceandinnerspiritof man."Thisistantamounttoa doctrineofself-sufficiencywhich thetragichistoryofourgenerationalone,letalonethecumulativeburdenofhistory,should havebeenenoughtodispel.

HadtheProfessoraskedhimselfattheoutsethowtheCreed cametobeinexistenceatall hewouldatoncehavesolvedhis problemofhowa"religionof thespirit"canandmustcoexistwith"incomprehensible philosophicaldogmas"andthe "authorityofaninfallibleinstitution."Thattheteachingsof Christianityweretobecastin somedefiniteformisevidently impliedinthecommissiongiven theApostlesinthe28thChapterofSt.Matthew'sGospel. Sincetheyweretoteachall nationstoobservewhatsoever Christhadcommanded,and sincethisteachingwastocarry theweightofauthority,not merelyofopinion,itwasnecessarytoformulateatleastessentialdoctrines.Suchformulation wasallthemorenecessarybecauseChristianitywasdestined forallmenandforallages.To preserveunityofbeliefthefirst requisitewastohavethebelief itselfquiteclearlystated.The Creed,therefore,isfundamentallyanauthoritativedeclaration ofthetruthsthataretohebelieved.Hence,theCreedisto beregardednotasalifelessfor-

mula,butratherasamanifestationoftheChurch'svitality.

TheCatholicChurch,echoing theScriptures,insiststhatinternalbeliefistheessentialelementofreligion,butitisinevitable,consideringman'smaterial-spiritualnature,thatthis shouldfindsomeoutwardexpression.Theauthoritativepro- mulgationofacreedanditsacceptanceimplynoinfringement oftherightsofreason.Forthe mindtendsnaturallytoexpress itselfandespeciallytoutterits thoughts,intheformoflanguage.Suchexpression,again, resultsingreaterclarityand firmerpossessionofthemental content.Sothatthereisnoconflictbetweentheinternalspirit andtheformulationofdogmas suchaswehaveintheCreed. Theyarecomplementary.

Thegreatestdrawbacksufferedbytheexponentsofa purelyspiritualreligionisthat theydonotknowwhattheybelieve.Theyneverbreakforth intolanguage,letalone'dogma, becausetheyareintellectually bankrupt.The"religionofthe spirit"hasnotneedtogoback tothe"infiniteazureofthe past,"foritspresentstateis infinitelyazurous.Inanycase ProfessorMurdoch'slistsofhis fellowreligiousadherentsseemed,atthebest,infelicitous.S'ts. FiancisofAssisi,Catherineof SienaandPaulofTarsusbelongedtotheCatholicChurch, subscribedwithoutquibbleto "incomprehensiblephilosophical dogmas"andbelievedthatwilfuldenialoftheChristianFaith wouldinvolveeternalpunishment. Itisaquaintliterarydevice torefertotheholyCatholic ChurchoftheApostles'Creed withsmallinsteadofcapital letters.Butithardlyequatesto anargument.TheProfessor claimsthatthechurchisholy onlyinsofarasitiscatholic. Perhapsitistheeffectofauthoritarianrepressiononmy poormind,butIcannotseethe slightestconnectionbetween holinessanduniversalityexcept onecouldwishthatholiness weretobefoundeverywhere.

Dr.Potteris'pastpresidentoftheAmericanNationalSocietyfortheLegalisationof Euthanasia.ThelettersWrites& ingtokillingcomefromdoctors.

Dr.Potterin1938complained thatmanydoctorswereforced topractiseeuthanasiasurreptitiously.Toperformitopenly meantfacingamurdercharge. To-dayhissocietyissponsoring aBillbeforeCongresstomake voluntaryeuthanasialegal.

Hewantstoremovethe"hypocriticalcircumstances"inwhich doctorskillpeople.

Thehypocrisyliesinthe fictionthatanoperation,intendedandcertaintokill,gives thepatient"achanceina thousand."Thereisinfactno chance.Thedoctor,thepatient andthepatient'sfriendsknow hatthesurgeon'sknifeisa dagger.

Thesolemnwarningofthe one-in-a-thousandchanceisnothingbutalegalsafeguardto keepthedoctoroutofthedock.

Notallwhodieatthesurgeon'shandsdosowillingly. Youngbabiesareamongthe victims.Sentenceofdeathis passedbytheparents.Thenthe doctor-executionergetsbusy.

"Thetechniqueissimple," saysDr.Potter."If,forinstance,ababyisbornahopeless idiot,thedoctormaygotothe parentandsaythereisadelicateoperationfromwhichthe babyhas'achanceinathous and'ofemerging.

"Thefatherunderstandswhat hemeans,thenursesunderunderstand,thedoctorunderstands.Thereisnochanceina thousand."

What,however,Iaskedmyself,iswrongaboutbeingemotional?Ifthegentlemaninquestionconsidereditperfectlynormaltofeelhisemotionsstirred byatragedy.thatmade'him wanttocrywithpityforthe heroorheroine,orbyacomedy thatarousedhislaughter,orby asatirethatstirredhisanger, howcanhethinkitoutoforder ifaworshipper,assistingatthe greatestdramaofall,theMass, shouldfeelhisemotionsstirred todeepreverence,tosorrowfor OurLord'sagony,andtojoyat thepromiseoftheResurrection?

IfailtounderstandhowanyonecanworshipGodwithout beingemotional.Godislove. CanoneloveGod,orcreature,or thingwithoutfeelingdeeplyemotional?Surelynot.

Coldlyandlogicallytoapproachthealtarinamoodthat outlawsanyfeelingbutofawe, orfervour,is,inmyopinion,to goill-equippedintoGod'shouse. TofearGodistobeemotional. ToloveHimistobeemotional. Tosuppresstheseemotionsand rationalisethemistoapproach theDivineMysteriesinthespirit ofadissectorblindinghimself totheexquisitebeautyofthe butterflyheisabouttoturninto itscomponentelements.Itisas badasamanwho,lovinghis wife,refusestokissher.

Inall,Iammoreinsympathy withthosedervishpeoplewho dancethemselvestoafrenzyof religiousfervouruponoccasions whichtheyregardasappropriate forsuchbehaviour.Thesepeople, whentheyexperienceanemotion, apparentlygothewholehogin givingexpressiontoit.There are,onemusthastentoadmit, limitstobesetasafencearound extra-emotionalism,.It'sathing thatcantooeasilybackfire.It cangetonecertified,orthrown intogaol.And,eveninrelatively mildexpressionsofit,earnone thereputationofaneccentric. Therefore,tobenormallyemotionalonemust,ofcourse,know wheretostop.

Nevertheless,wecouldbea gooddealmoreemotionalthan weareandbethebetterChristiansforit.WerBitish,forsome reasonnoteasytodiscover,have cultivatedaphlegmaticveneer. Wehaveforquiteanumberof generationsbeenledtobelieve thatanyshowofemotionisbad form-thesortofthingoneexpectsonlyofLatinsandsuch. Well,therearealotofLatins intheChurchjustasthereare alotofphlegmatics,andifthe Latinemotionalismpredominates,whathavethephlegmatics beendoingtoletthingsgetthat day?

TheItalianshavebeencalled, rightlyorwrongly,themost civilisedrace.Theirinabilityto begoodsoldiersisgivenasan argumentinsupportofthiscontention.AndtheItalian(ifone daregeneralise)isanemotional creature.What'smore,hetakes hisemotionswithhim-even whenhegoestoChurch.Infact, Ishouldn'tbesurprisedifsome psychologistdiscoveredChurch iswhereemotionsbelong,for there,beforeGod,arewenot strippedofourveneersand shams,posingsandinhibitions, complexesandrepressions,and revealedtoHimasHemadeus?

Verywell,maysaythe"unemotional"non-Catholic;surely youdon'tsuggestthatChurch isaproperplacewhereinto demonstrateouremotions?But that,Ishouldreply,isjustwhat Idosuggest.WegotoChurch, Ihope,inordertodemonstrate ourloveofGod.Letus,then, fittinglydemonstrateourloveby singingitinpraise,bygiving giftstobeautifyHishouse,and, aboveall,bydisclosinginConfessionandcontritionallthat ofourselveswhichcausesHim sorrowandwhichcanbutdull ourownjoyandsullyourlove.

Whatbutanintenseemotional loveofGodinspiredthemusic thePainting.thewriting,the sculptureandcarving,thearchitecture,ofthosegreatartists whoflourishedunderthepatron. ageofMotherChurch?We, theordinarymortals,havenot thetalentswherebywecan demonstrateourloveofGodby creatingworksofconsummate art.Butitisgiventothelowliestandthehumblestofusto love.Withoutthegracetolove, surelyweshouldnotbehuman. Ipitythepoor,unaidedworshipperwhohasnoughtinhis crucifix-less,holypicture-less Lindflower-lesschurchtoinspire anemotionalupliftingofheart thatsoftensthesoul.Hehas nothingbuthisunaidedselfand, maybe,afewhardlyinspiring hymns.Ifhecomesawayfrom hisworshipasemotionallyfrigid aswhenheapproached,Icannotblamehim.Iammerely :orryforhim.HemayloveGod ADDWHAT'SWRONG-22 morethanIdo,but,then,why notbeopenaboutit?Whyhide suchlove?

Acommon,ordinarycreature thatIam,.1needtobeunlocked beforeI,canshedthajthard, worldlyshellthatImust,perforce,wearamongmen.Ineed thoseholypicturesthatadorn thewallsofCatholicChurches. Ineedthesymbolismthatrests uponthealtar.IneedthesonorousLatinasIneedthesimplerepetitionoftheRosary.I needtheflowers,or,inLent, thepurpleshrouds.Ineedthe musicandtheMissaCantata, thepealoftheorgan,theincense,thevestments.Everybit ofitisasymboltoremindme oftheGraceofGod,toinspire inmybreastthatmostdivine ofallemotions,love.Ineedit asIneedbeauty,truth,goodness.AndIneeditbecauseso poorismysoul,sopunymy heart,thatthereisnotenough withinmetoletmerespond

withoutinspiration.True,maybe,Icanlovewithouttheseinspirations.Butwiththem,the heartswellsandthetearsdim theeyesaslovewellsupins surgeofemotion.ThenIamlike aharp,whichisnothinguntil itsstringsareplucked-then, andonlythen,togiveforth music.

Avaunt,thisphlegmatismthat makesdummiesofusWhy shouldInotwearmyhearton mysleleve?Letusalllaugh more,crymore,ejaculatemore. Aye,letusevenmakepublic foolsofourselveswhenweare amongthephlegmatics(the emotionalswilltakecurconductforgrantedandasbeing perfectlynatural).Forwantof thespiritualstrengthtobe emotionalwehavebecomecomplacent,fish-like,cursedlyselfcentredandruinouslysatisfied. Itisbadmannerstobeangry oversomepoliticaljiggery-pock. ery,soweacceptit,phlegmatically.Lookwhat'shappeningto uspolitically.Itisn'tdoneto cryoutaloudwhenweseegross injustice.Soweletitpass.And lookwhatsufferingthereis aroundus.Itisn'tourbusiness whensomesmallvoicewithin usstrugglestoshoutoutits indignationatthecrueltyand cheatingandthecynicismall aboutus.Sowestiflethesmall voicewithinandcontinueupon ourphlegmaticway.Andwhen weourselves,inturn,become victimstothesethingsthen,and onlythen,doouremotionsburst theirbondsandoursoulsrecoil inhorroratallthosebland., phlegmaticswhichcanbehold ourburstunmoved.

Sobyallmeansletushave noshameaboutperfectly healthyemotions.Andifthe ritualandsymbolismofthe CatholicChurchisemotional, praiseGodthatitiseasierand morebeautifultopraiseHis HolyNamebecauseofthatemotionalism-atleastitisforme.

Surpassingthesuccesswhich attendedthefirstAnnualConvention,thesecondConventionof theHolyNameSocietywasheld onSunday,16thinst.,atthe ChristianBrothers'College, Perth.

Altogether120representatives of30branches,lompris:ng25 fromthemetropolitanarea,with fourfromthecountryandone fromtheGoldfields,attendedthe 10.0o'clockMassattheCathedral.duringwhichtheRev.D. Breslin,0.M.I.,addressedthe delegates.Fr.Breslinwelcomed delegatestotheConference,expressinghispleasureattheattendanceofsuchalargerepresentation.Heemphasisedthe needformenofhighidealsin aworldofexceedinglylowstandardsandcounselledoutward expressionoftheseideals.

Fr.Breslinrecordedanoteof warningagainsttheacceptance, withoutprotest,ofthefalse principlesofCommunism,stressingthedangeroftheexpansion ofthisheresy,notsomuchby theactivitiesofitsagentsand proponentsasbythelaissezfaireattitudeofthecommunity atlarge.

Followingtheconclusionof HolyMass,delegatesassembled attheC.B.College,thetheatre ofwhichhadbeenverykindly placedattheirdisposalbythe Brothers,andgavetheirattentiontoafullandveryinterestingagenda.

SECRETARY'SANNUAL REPORT

Thereportopenedonahappy notebyexpressingthepleasure oftheDiocesanUnionatthe maintenanceoftheSociety's numericalstrengthsincethelast annualreporthadbeenmade.

Theprayersofdelegateswere requestedforthereposeofthe soulsof29memberswhohad diedduringtheyearandwhose nameshadbeengiveninquarterlyreports.

Thepresentmembershipofthe PerthDiocesanUnionwas showntobe3538,ofwhom2771 wereactiveseniormembersand 767juniormembers.Thismembershipwasdistributedamong 64branches(35metropolitan,25 countryandfourGoldfields): thesefiguresdisclosedagain duringtheyearoftwobranches and229members.

Adisturbingfactornotedin thereportwasthelargenumberofex-servicememberswho hadnotrejoinedtheranksof theSocietyondischargefrom theforces,anddelegateswere recommendedtobringthemattertothenoticeoftheirbranch executiveswithaviewtothe morecompletespiritualrehabilitationoftheirerstwhilemembers.

Therecruitmentofyouth, uponwhomrestedthefuture strengthoftheSociety,wasalso stressedbytheGeneralSecretary,whoappealedtoall branchestomakethistaska No. priorityduringtheensuingyear.

Attendanceatmeetingsheld duringtheyearweregiven,the percentageofmembersreceivingHolyCommunionbeing6per cent.higherthanthatofthe previousyear,whileattendances ateveningdevotionswerealso greater.Thoughtheseresults weregratifying,memberswere urgedtoestablishastillhigher percentageduringthecoming year.

MentionwasmadeoftheSociety'sactivitiesduringthepreceding12months,outstanding amongstwhichwerethepart playedinthecelebrationofthe Centenaryact*ChurchinWesternAustralia,commemoratedin MaylastandintheAnnual RallyandEucharisticProcession heldatAquinasCollegelastOctoberontheoccasionofthe FeastofChristtheKing.In bothfunctionstheSocietywas privilegedtotakeaveryprominentpart. RegionalralliesheldatNorthamandKatanning'andwhich wereattendedwithgratifying results,bareevidenceoftheinteresttakenintheSociety's welfarebycountrybranchesprecludedfromrepresentationat quarterlygeneralmeetings.Nor wasevidencelackingthatthe exampleofthesedistrictswould befollowedbyothersinthenear future.

Mentionwasmadeofthefact that,sincethelastConvenion, threemembersoftheSociety hadenteredthereligiouslife, anddelegateswereaskedtoensurebytheirprayers,perseveranceandsuccessforthesemembersinthisnoblevocation.

TheSecretary'sReportconcludedwithanexpressionofregretthatHisGracetheArchbishophadbeenprecluded,by absencefromtheState,from attendingtheConvention.The Secretaryplacedonrecordthe Society'sindebtednesstoHis Gracefortheinvaluableassistancegivenitatalltimes.

TotheRev.T.Laloralso, whohadenteredtheSocietyof Jesus,theSocietywasdeeply indebtedforadviceandguidancegivenduringhistenureof officeasDiocesanSpiritual Director.His-successor,Rev.Fr. Cunningham,hadcontinuedto givethatassistancewhichthe Societyhadbeenfortunateto receivefromeachandevery SpiritualDirectorandhadundertaken,incompanywithexecutiveofficers,manybranch visitationsatnolittleinconveniencetohimself.TheSecretary's thankswereextendedtobranch spiritualdirectorsandexecutivesandtofellowmembersof theExecutiveCouncilfortheir manykindnessesandco-opera. tion.

TREASURER'SREPORT

Followingtheadoptionofthe Secretary'sReport,theTreasurer(Mr.Parkinson)readthe financialreportandstatementof accountswhichdisclosedthe Society'sfundsasbeingina healthycondition.Delegates'attentionwasdrawntothefact thattheExecutiveCouncil'ssole sourceofincome,withwhichto meetadministrativeexpenses, wasderivedfrombranchlevies, someofwhichwerestilloutstandingwhenthereportwas beingprepared.

SPECIALBUSINESS

Conference'unanimouslysupportedaproposalsubmittedby theBunburybranch.viz.,that theExecutiveCouncilrecommendtoallbranchesthepracticeofHolyNamemembersattendingMassonthefirstSaturdayofthemonthforfiveconsecutivemonthsinhonourof OurLadyofFatima.Discussion ensuedastothedateonwhich thepracticeshouldbecommenced,thePresidenteventually rulingthatthesubjectbeone fordeterminationbybranch spiritualdirectors,theactual datebeingrelativelyimmaterial as,infact,certainbrancheshad alreadycommencedthedevotion.

Thevaryingformsinwhich theritualofHolyNamemeetingswasbeingcarriedoutby brancheswereevidencedbythe discussionwhichcentredaround aresolutionthatattheSociety's meetingstheHolyNamepledge berecitedbyall'members standingandwiththerighthand raised.Attentionhavingbeen drawntothedesirabilityofadherencetotheHolyName manualinsuchmatters,andbeforethemotionhadbeencarriedthesubjectoftheresolutiondriftedintoawiderfield, delegatesrecountingthepractice obtainingintheirparishesin respectofprocessionsheldduringeveningdevotions.The PresidentinformedConference thatbranchspiritualdirectors hadabsolutediscretioninthe matterandthatuniformityinthe conductofprocessionscouldnot beexpectedowing,amongother things,tothedifferingplacementofaislesinparish churches:theformofprocession hadnecessarilytobegoverned entirelybylocalcircumstances.

Thefirstofseveralagenda itemssubmittedbytheNortham branchsuggestedthatbranch secretariesbegivengreater latitudeinthetimewithin whichbranchreportshadtobe forwardedtotheGeneralSecretary.Speakingtothequestion, Northamdelegatesstressedthe difficulty.countrymembersexperiencedinattendingmeetings onthesecondSundayofthe month,shiftworkandtravelling inthecourseofbusinessmitigatingagainststrictadherence tothefulfilmentofdutieson anyparticularS'unday:Considerationoftheirobligationbeing metbythereceptionofHoly CommuniononanySundayof themonthwasasked.Onthe Presidentrulingthatmembers, underthecircumstancesoutlined,mightreceiveHolyCom-

muniononthefirstorthird tiundayofthemonthwithout forfeitureofrecordedattendance forbranchreportpurposes,the motionwaswithdrawn.Questionsconcerningtheliturgyand theSociety'sconstitutiondrew attentiontoaresolutionpassed atthefirstConventionanddesignedtoensurethattheSo. cietypublishitsownofficial handbookattheearliestopportunity.itwasgenerallyacceptedbyConferencethattheadoptionofauniformliturgywas imperative,thePresidentupholdingthisopinion,informing delegatesthat,onhisreturn fromtheEasternStates,the GeneralSecretarywouldhave copiesoftheliturgydistributed amongstbranchesinpamphlet form.

Regardingtheconstitution, thePresidentoutlinedthediffi cultiesofcompilinganoriginal constitutionandgavesomeindicationofthecostofitspublication.Variousphasesofthesubjectwerediscussedatsome length,delegatessuggesting(a) thattheGoulbournhandbookbe adoptedassettingoutanappropriateconstitutionforthis State;(b)thatthecostofpublishingaconstitutionbeborne b'ybranches;(c)thattheincomingExecuiveCouncilgive earlyconsiderationofthequestion;and(d)thatacceptancebe madeofanoffertohavethe pertinentrulestypedandduplicatedfordistributionamongst branches.Theproposaltoadopt, asthisState'sconstitution,that laiddownintheGoulbourn handbookpendingtheframing ofitsownruleswaseventually approvedbyConference.

Highgatebranchsubmitted,as appropriatefordiscussion,the proprietyofaspecialMass beingcelebratedinallparishes onAnzacDayandattendedby membersoftheSocietyasa commemorativeofferingfor thosewhohadfalleninthe serviceoftheircountry.

Dr.SullivanexplainedthatAnzacDayfallsonthefeastofan Apostleandtheproposaltocele,.,rateaspecialMasswouldpresentdifficultiesinmanyparishes.

AttendanceatthespecialMass attheCathedralwasofcourse outofthequestionforthevery largemajorityofmembersunder whichcircumstanceshesuggestedthatbhanchmembersattend Massintheirownparisheson AnzacDayandthattheyoffer theirintentionsgenerallyfor allwhohadfalleninbattleand particularlyforfallenmembers oftheservices:thesuggestion wasadoptedunanimouslyby conference.

Mr.O'Brien(OsbornePark)adresseddelegatesonthesubject ofthemenaceofCommunism, soundingawarningastotheexpansionofthisheresyandexpressingtheviewthattheHoly NameSocietyshouldworkas abodyincounter-actingtheevil.

Mr.O'Brieninformeddelegates oftheactionbeingtakenbythe HierarchyinAmericaandurged thatsimilaractionhetakenin thisState,Discussiononthe subjectleftnodoubtastodele-

gatesagreementwiththenecessityforactionbeingtaken butdoubtedtheproprietyofthe Society'sundertakingthetaskas oneofitsactivities.

Thecloserassociationofmembers,asindividuals,withlocal andpoliticalbodiesengagedin fighting.Communismandthe moreactiveinterestbymembers asunionistsintheexecutiveadministrationoftheirunions wouldhelpgreatlyinattaining theirobjective.

Dr.SulivanremindeddelegatesthatHolyNamemenwere membersofaspiritualsociety, which,assuch,wasnotempoweredtoengageinpoliticalactivity:andhisgivinganassurancethattheHierarchyofAustraliahadgiven,andwouldcontinuetogivethemattergrave considerationandwoulddecide ontheformofsocialactivity likelytoensuremaximumresults incombatingtheinsidiouscornmunistisscourgethematterwas allowedtodrop.

Conferencedecidedthatcopies oftheSecretary'sandTreasurer'sreportsbeforwardedtoall branchesandthat"TheRecord" berequestedtopublishinits columnsthestoryofOurLady ofFatima.

Beforevacatingthechair,and priortotheselectionofmembers ofthenewExecutiveCouncil, thePresidentaskedhisfellowofficerstoaccepthisthanksfor thesplendidteam-workdone duringthepastyear.HeexpressedtheCouncil'sgratitudetothe DiocesanSpiritualDirector(Rev. Leederville,Fremantleand Subiacoprovidedaclosefinish inthejuniorpennantcompetition.Thepennantwaswonby

Asoftenhappensinbig,successfulfunctions,thelimelight isfocussedonthechampions andthestars,whilethebackstageworkersareneglected.It isonlyfairthatatributebe paidheretotheworkdoneby thosewhomadeourcarnivalthe successthatitwas.

Fortherunningoftheprogrammeandthetrackandfield judgingwearedeeplyindebted totheofficialsoftheAmateur AthleticAssociation.Theathleticseasonfor1946-47officially closed4weeksago,butthese officialsgaveuttheirservices onthe15thand22ndofMarch andrantheshowfromstartto finishintheirusualorderly way.

Toourownpatronswewould liketoexpressoursinceregratitude.Rev.Dr.Sullivan,Messrs. Green,JeffriesandParkerand theclubpresident,BrianRyan, havealwaystakenabeeninterestintheY.C.W.sporting activities,andwethankthem fortheirvaluablehelponall occasions.

Probablythemostdifficult taskduringthecarnivalwas thescoringandrecordingofresults.Thecreditforthiswork goestoMissEileenDuffy,a memberoftheHighgateNCGM, whokeptanaccurate,systematicanddetailedaccountofthe wholesports.Thepreparationof scoresheetsforthefieldjudges wasanothertaskwhichsheundertookintheweekpreceeding thecompetition.Herefficient workismuchappreciatedbythe Y.C.W.

On'Thursdayevening,Feb. 27th,ameetingwasheldinthe homeofMrs.McDonald.Nine people,afterlisteningtothe DiocesanChaplain'soutlineof objectivesandmethodsofthe Movement,beganadiscussion accordingtothe"FirstProgramme." Allpresentexpressedtheopinionthatthemethodofdiscussionwasaneasyone,and averyhelpfulmeansoflearningknowledgeofallkinds.

Mr.HerbertMcDonaldtried hishandatbeingGroupLeader byreadingoutthequestionsset outintheprogramme,andmost ofthosepresentweredrawninto thediscussion.

Mrs.McDonaldledtheRosary. Mrs.Hollandbroughtupfordiscussionandactionsomelocal problemswhich,iftackled, couldwellbeofspecialinterest totheRuralGroupandofbenefittothedistrict.

DARDANUT

-OnSunday,March2nd,followingDevotions,mostofthecongregationretiredtothehallto heartheDiocesanChaplain speakontheRuralMovement.

Itwasespeciallypleasingto seethenumberofboysandgirls present. ItwasexplainedtoFather Ryanthatagroupmeetsat Dardanupeverymonth.Father Ryanspokeonthemethodsof theMovementforabout20 minutes,andthenaskedMr. JoeHynestoconductameetingsothatthevisitorscould seehowitisdone,andsothat he,Fr.Ryan,mightpointout anyneedofimprovement.

Itbecameapparentthatthe specialsetofGospelsdrawnup fordiscussionhadnotbeenalwaysused;infact,fewseemed familiarenoughwithGospel Discussion.FatherRyanpointed outthattheGroupLeaderonly asksthequestions,anditis fortheotherstoanswerthem.

Similarlyinthegeneraldiscussionfewseemedreadyto discussinapositivewaythe questionsintheprogramme. Oneexperiencedfarmerand piousCatholicsummeduphis attitudetoCatholicActionby saying:"Wedon'twantany Moviement;allwewant,isa reductionintaxation!"

Thismeetingaccomplished little,thoughitwasencouraging toseesomeinterestamong theyouthpresent.

FatherRyaninafewfinal remarksadvised(1)thatthe groupfollowascloselyaspossiblethepreparedprogramme;atleastfortheGospelDiscussionandfortheGeneralDiscussion;(2)thatitisbetterto haveagroupofthreepeople withsomeenthusiasmthan20 peoplewhocannotbecomeinterested.

Late Roger Gleeson

On20thFebruary,residents ofGoomallinganddistrictswere shockedandgrievedwhenthey learnedthattheiresteemed friendandbenefactor,Mr.Roger Gleeson,hadbeenfatallyinjured.Hiscarhadstalledon therailwaycrossingattheeast endofthetownandhadbeen hitbytheincomingpassenger train.Deathwasinstantaneous. ThelateMr.Gleesonhadcome fromIrelandwhenayoungman and,fromsmallbeginnings,had acquiredpropertiesandhad farmedthemsuccessfully.Duringlastyearhetookupresi- denceinthetownandhadinterestedhimselfmoreinlocal affairs,andthoseinneedof financialassistancefounda readyandgeneroushelperinthe lateRogerGleeson.Itwas. however,asaleadingmember ofhisChurchthatthedeceased gentleman'slifewasexemplary. Hisriseisreallytheriseof theAmericanArmy,which, whenheenteredit40yearsago, wasalittle-consideredservice whichseemedtooffernoscope forthenormalambitionsof youngAmericansofability,and toleadneithertowealthnor topower.In1939itwasaforce ofbut174,000men.But,asthe UnitedStateshasgrowntobe materiallythe.greatestPowerin theworld,theAmericanArmyhasgrowninpublicestimation andauthority,withGeneralsas theAmbassadorsofthecountry (itisoneofGeneralMarshall's selections,GeneralBedell-Smith, whoisAmbassadorinMoscow). GeneralMcNarney,nowhandingovertheAmericanzmiein GermanytoGeneralClay,was GeneralMarshall'sDeputyChief ofStaffinthecriticalyearsof preparationbefore1942.Butall theAmericanGeneralswhose namestheworldhaslearntowe theircareerstohim.

OnMarchthe17ththeclub heldabarbecuetoPointWalter.Thiswasorganisedbythe club'ssocialcommittee,andis thefirstoftheclub'ssocial eventsfortheseasonof1947.

SeeingthateveryonewasexemptedfromtheLentenregulationsonthatnight,therefreshmentswerenotsparedinany wayorform.

Thenightwasidealforthe tripontheriver.Aboutthirty clubmembersturned(up,and lifeafterdeath-theresurrection.

ThepartyleftBarrack-st. Jettyatabout8.10andjourneyedinaSwanRiverferryto PointWalter.Musicwasenjoyedonthetripout,buteverybodyseemedtobequitecontent tositbackinthecoolandenjoy thefreshair,whichwasnot prevailinginthecitywhenthe partyleft.

OnarrivingatPointWalter thefireswereallalightandsoon theyweresurrounded,despite thehotnight.Thenappeared steakinallshapesandsizes, chops,sausages,potatoes.and soontheywereallgrillingand everyonekeepingawatchful eyeonhisorhersupper.As itwasanexcellentfire,itdid nottakelongforthesupperto cookandthentherewasquietnessforawhilewhilsteverybodysatbackandenjoyedthe beautifulgrill.

Judgingbytheamountof steak,chops,etc.,thatwas about,manycouponbooksmust havesuffered.

Aftersupper,thehometrip wascommencedandtheparty wasmuchbrighter.Musicstill continued,andtheclub'snightingalegaveaverypopular solos.Also,somenewtalent cametolightandaduetwas wellrendered. Thenightcametoanendall toosuddenly.Everybodywas loudintheirpraiseforthe extraenjoyablenightanditwas nodoubtacredittothecommitteewhoworkedsohardto arrangeit.

Owingtothelackofcourts ithasbeenratherdifficultto tellhowtheformisprogressing, butifwecanbelieveallwe heartherewillbeahardjob aheadoftheselectioncommittee toplace1,2and3inthemen's gradeteam. Afewofourmembershave beenseekingnewpastures,and aftertheexperiencegained whenplayingwiththeState's foremostplayers,wefullyexpecttheywillbestartingcoachingclassesinthenearfuture forthebenefiltofwepoorerclassplayers.
