Thesefiguresreflectwhatisin factthecentralsocialproblem oftheday,whichistheproblem of'theprotectionandpreservationoffamilylife,towhichCardinalGriffindevotedhisAdvent PastoralLetter;yetitissubmergedinthegreatseaoflegislationwhichpreoccupiesthe HouseofComons,andtheHouse ofLordswasgratefulforthe comparativedegreeofleisure whichitenjoys,whichpermitted ittorangesowidelyinsoimportantandgraveadebateas thatarisingfromLordReading's motionontheDenningReport.
FortheCommons,housing,for example,hasbecomealmost whollyaquantitativequestion, sourgentthatthereislittle timetoconsiderwhatsortof familieswillbeabletolivein thehousesthatarebeingproduced.
Inthecourseofthedebatethe ArchbishopofCanterburyraised anissueastotheformofcivil marriagebeforetheRegistrar. HesuggestedthattheState shouldlookratheranxiouslyat theconditionsunderwhichitad-
mitspeopletothemarriedstate, andaskwhethertheconditions ofcivilmarriagearecalculated tohelpthosewhoaresomarried tosettheirmarriagefromthe startonatrueandlastingbasis. Inevitably,hethought,theconditionsofmarriageataRegister Officeconfinetheceremonytothe purelylegallevel:thenameof theofficeandoftheofficial;the connectionwithbirthsand deaths;.theattendanceatan officeandfillingupthenecessaryforms,andthestartling brevityoftheceremonyfollowed by"Nextplease'tothewaiting couples.
Inthesecircumstancesitis,in thethoughtoftheArchbishop, essentialthattheStateshould makeabsolutelyclearwhatthe legalcpntractiswhichitthus enablestobeundertaken.The actualceremonytakesthreeminutes,anditconsistsoftwosentencesonlyspokenbyeachofthe twoparties.Inthefirstsentence,eachpartydeclaresthat thereisnoimpedimenttothe marriage.Thesecondsentence issimply"Icalluponthesepersonsherepresenttowitness thatI,A.B.,dotakethee,C.D., tobemylawfulweddedhusband,"or"wife,"asthecase maybe.Theretheceremony er.ds.Aringmaybeexchanged,andtheregisterissigned. TheRegistrarmaynot,"proprio motu,"addtothewordsprescribedbylaw,orremindthe coupleoftheseriousnessofthe steptheyaretaking;orthat marriageisalife-longcontract.
IntheviewoftheArchbishop itisintolerablethatweshould allowtheuseofaformofwords togoonwhichadmittedlyvast
numbersofpeoplemisunderstand,andwhichtheythink meansmerely"registered"and not"life-long."TheArchbishopfeltthatthisisamatterof realmoment.Andsoitis.Nor isitwithoutinteresttoobserve thattheattentionofauthority wascalledtotheunsatisfacory conditionsofcivilmarriagein thememorandumwhichwassubmittednotyettwoyearsagoby agroupofCatholicsocietiesto theRoyalCommissionofPopulation.Inthismemorandumthe firstrecommendationwas:"thattheformofmarriage usedatRegisterOfficershould beamendedandassimilatedto theformusedintheChurch service,soastomakeitplain toallpartiesthatanEnglish marriageis'thevoluntary unionforlifeofonemanand onewomantotheexclusionof allothers.'"
Thereisreasontobelievethat theinitiativetakenbytheCatholicsocietiesinmakingthis recommendationledtoaninquiry intothematterinAnglicanand othercircles.Itisnowbeing widelydemandedthatthemeaningofmarriageas"avoluntary unionforlifeofonemanwith onewomantotheexclusionof allothers,"shallbemadeabsolutelycleartoallwhogo throughaceremonyofmarriage inEngland.
intoapastoralrelationship"to thecommunity,doingintheinterestsofthenationfornonChurchpeoplewhat,he.said,the Churchesdofortheirownmembers.Yethere.asinother fields,theStatefindsthatitis notwellsuitedforsuchpastoral work.Ithasnodoctrineofforgiveness;nodoctrineofredemptionorofgracetoworkwith. Thatdoesnotsomuchmatter ifithasthewisdomtoemploy inreconciliationworkerswho havesuchthingsintheirpower togive.Butbecauseitis"forcedintothispastoralposition" theStatemustprovidethemachinerybywhichreconciliation canbebroughtaboutasoftenas possible.Andheaddedatthe closeofhisspeechthat"the Statemustseetoitthatitspastoralfunction,soimportant,is fulfilledtothebestofitsability."
Itisanastonishingsituation.
ThesecularStatewhichhasunderminedtheChristianconceptionofmarriagebytheveryformulathatituses,andbysuccessiveextensionsofthegrounds andfacilitiesfordivorce,isnow facedwiththeruinthatithas wroughtintheinstitutionof marriage;andwithanageing populationwhichisnolonger recruitedbyasufficiencyofchildrentomaintainitsnumbers.
TheStatewhichin1917,through adecisionofthejudicialtribunal oftheHouseofLords,declared that"Christianityisnolonger partofthelawofEngland,"is nowobliged,withouttheChristiandoctrineofredemption, withoutanypowertoadminister theChristianSacramentsorthe GraceofGod,toundertakethe pastoralofficewithaviewto thereconciliationofspouseswho havebeentaughtthatmarriage isasecularcontractterminable moreorlessatthewillofthe parties.ItwasagreatCatholicJudgewho,intheHouseof Lordsin1938,protestedthatin thelawofEngland"whatwas onceaholyestateenduringfor thejointlivesofthespousesis steadilyassumingthecharacteristicsofacontractforatenancyatwill."
Weareinthepresenceofa spiritualcrisis.Forallitsassumptionofpastoraloffice,the Stateismanifestlyunableoutof itsownresourcestodischarge thedutiesofthatoffice.Our statesmenorpoliticalleaders areundernoillusionastotheir ownincompetenceinspiritual matters.Inaspeechwhichhe delivered,inMay,1946,before theGeneralAssemblyofthe ChurchofScotland,thePrime Minister,Mr.ClementAttlee,referredtothegreatdeterioration thathadhappenedoverawide fieldofhumanactivityinthe lastthirtyyears:-
"WehaveseenariseGovernmentsthatnotonlydidnot followbutprofessedlyand openlydisregardedallthe moralpreceptsonwhichour Christiancivilisationhasbeen founded.Theserulersdid notprofesstobelieveintruth orjustice,pityorlove.We seeintheworldto-daythebitterfruitofthefollowingof falsegods."

"theworldto-dayhasneedof spiritualleadership,andwe whoseektoserveourgenerationingovernmentknowwell theneedwehaveofyouwho serveinChurches.Weare engagedinaspiritualwarfare whichisneverending."
TheleaderoftheGovernment appealsforhelptotheleadersof thespiritualforces.TheleadersoftheAnglicanChurch-accepting,itseems,thejudgment oftheHouseofLordsin1917, whichvirtuallyamountedtointellectualandmoraldis-establishment-havemanifestlyceasedtoregardtheChurchofEnglandasthedepartmentorbody whichdischargesthepastoral dutiesoftheState.
Inthisconditionofthings,it looksasiftheleadersoftheestablishedChurchandofthe StateinEnglandareunableto meetthecrisis;andtorestore, oreventoattempttorestore, theinstitutionofmarriageand thelifeofEnglandtoitsChristianbasisandfoundation.

OnDecember18,intheParish Hall,Highgate,kindlyloanedfor theoccasionbyRev.FatherWallace,anumberofthetertiariesentertainedSr.M.O'Connor,whois tobemarriedearlyinthenew year.Onbehalfofherfellowtertiariesshewaspresentedwitha pairofbrasscandlestickssuitably inscribed.

Tertiariesalsoconductedastall attheFieldDayatClontarf,and itprovedagreatsuccess,despite veryshortnotice.Manymembersrespondedtotheappealof Rev.MotherofSt.Joseph'sOr. plianagetocollectontheirannual streetappealday.
Inconclusion,wewouldliketo recordourappreciationofthewonderfulassistancegiventousatall timesbyIlisGracetheArchbishop,andthekindlyinteresthehas takeninthewelfareoftheOrder.
THELATEMOTHERMARY STANISLAUS
OnDecember24,1946,there passedtohereternalrewardthe lateMotherMaryStanislaus Fahey,ofSt.Joseph'sConvent, Fremantle.Thepassingofthe deardeceasedwasanoccasion ratherofjoythanofsorrow, sincedeathforherwasacalm, peacefulandprayerfulending toalifeofmuchill-health,and, forthepastthreeyears,ofcompleteinvalidism.
ThelateMotherM.Stanislaus wasborninKojonupin1872, andwaseducatedbytheearly FrenchpioneerSistersinAlbany.Manyandinteresting weretheanecdotesshecouldtell ofthecharityandvirtueofthese heroicdaughtersofFrance.In fact,shewroteadelightfulaccountoftheworkinAlbanyof Rev.MotherJulia,whowasheld insuchesteemthat,afterher deaththepeopleerectedamonumenttohermemory.
Atthetenderageofeighteen yearswhentheworldissoalluringandrosy-hued,MotherStanislausleftherhome,herloved ones,andallearthlyprospects togiveherselftoGodandthe salvationofsouls.Afterher ReligiousProfessionshewas sentbacktoAlbany,whereshe taughtforafewyears.ObediencethenbeckonedhertoFremantlewhere,withtheexceptionofsomesixyears,shepassedpracticallythewholeofher religiouslife..
SheheldthepositionsofNoviceMistressfortwelveyearsand SuperiorbothinFremantleand Kalamundaforeightyears.In 1921shewaschosenasadelegatetoattendtheGeneralChapterinMarseilles.
NotonlywasM.Stanislaus ofaliteraryturnofmind,but herskilfulfingersalsoproduced mostartisticandbeautifulspecimensofartneedlework,painting anddrawing.Itwas,however, onlyherownreligiousfamily andafewintimatefriendswho knewofhertalents,forshewas mostretiring-moreinclinedto concealratherthanexhibither gifts.
Atthetimeofherdeath MotherStanislauswasinthe 53rd.yearofherholyprofession, havingcelebratedherGolden Jubileein1943.TotheCommunitywhoprayedaroundher bed,hercalmpassingwasaninspiration,andeachSisterhopes that,whenDeathcallsher,sne willbidlifefarewellwiththe easeandholinessofMother Stanislaus.

TheEleventhHour
ThecablednewsfromMiamiBeachthatAlCapone, thenotoriousChicagogangster,hadsufferedanacute strokeandhadreceivedthelastritesoftheChurch,will comeasasevereshocktoeveryoneexceptinstructedCatholics.Itwillbeespeciallydisedifyingtothosenon-CatholicswhoatthemomentareproposingtorefuseChristian burialtonon-Churchgoers.Butmostofallitwilloutrage thecompletepaganswhohavenoregardwhateverfor moralconductuntilitsuitstheirbooktosneeratthe Churchforapparentcondonationofitsviolation.Yetthe principlesinvolvedinadeath-bedrepentanceareasplainas mercyitself.Indeed,regardedfromarathercynicalaspect itmighthesaidthatthewholemissionoftheChurchisto bringthegraceoftheLastSacramentstoasmanysinners aspossible.Forthereishumilityinvolvedaswellas mercy.Thatiswhywedailydescribeourselvesinprayer as"sinners,"realisingthatthedifferencebetweenmenin thisrespectismerelyoneofdegree.
ItispreciselyinsuchamatterasthisthattheChurch findsitselfinconflictwiththeabsurdnotionofprogress inwhichthesecularistsfindrefugeandsolace.Tothe falsematerialistdoctrineofhumanperfectibilityandselfsufficiency,theChurchopposesthedivinely-institutedSacramentofPenance.Itisanincessantreminderofthe pitiablefrailtyofhumannaturemadesplendidbythepromiseofforgivenessandfinalsalvation.Menshallonly belikegodswhentheyhaverealisedthemoralimpossibilityofbeinglikemenaccordingtoGod'soriginalplan forhumannature.Man,byvirtueofthehighestdignity wherewithhisnaturehadbeenendowed-free-will-chose tothwarttheDivineplanforhumanlife.AsaconsequencethewaytoEternalLifebecamesostraightand narrowthatfewwouldfinditunaided.Butmanwasnot lefttohisowndevices,elsehewouldlongsincehaveperished.Inanaccessofmercyandlove,accomplished throughtheIncarnation,manwasgivenasecondchance, andthemeritsoftheRedemptionwouldbeavailableto himuntilhislastbreath.
So,intheChristianschemeofthings,"wearewound roundandroundwithmercy,"andhenceitisaphenomenonpeculiartotheCatholicChurchthatamanmay ceasetobehaveandyetcontinuetobelieve.Ontheother hand,itistruethathabitualviolationoftheMoralLaw doessapthevitalityofFaith,forFaith,thoughaDivine gift,needstobenourishedandincreasedlikeanyother virtue.Forallthat,thesparkofconscienceisnevercompletelyextinguishedandtheGoodShepherdtrailsceaselesslyafterthelostsheep.Henceadeath-bedrepentance isnotsodifficulttounderstandafterall.Foronething eventhebestofCatholicstendsconstantlytorelapse intosinandexperiencestheneedof,theutilityoftheConfessional.Andforanother,itisknowntoGodalone howthemostabandonedsinnermayinsomesmallway beco-operatingwiththeGraceofGod.Norarethe prayersofananguishedmother,northeself-oblationof thecontemplatives,northeinfinitemeritsoftheeternallyofferedMasstohebroughttonought.
Inthismatter,however,thereisanimportantdistinctiontobemade.ThereareunhappilymenwhowantonlyturnfromtheChurchandthelawsofGodinthefoolish andevilexpectationoffindingmercy'twixtthesaddleand theground.Thisisthesinofpresumption.Anditis bestansweredbytheApostle'swarningthatGodisnut mocked.Evenifsuchamanweregrantedtheextraordinarygraceofadeath-bedrepentance,itwerewellto reflectthatadeath-bedisnottheidealsituationforasatisfactoryConfession.Thesensesandtheintellectarenot infrequentlydistractedbypainordulledbydrugs,thewill slow-movingandsluggish.Allinall,itpostulatesatremendouseffortonthepartofthenaturalmantoawakein himselfdispositionsatcompletevariancewiththehabits ofalife-time.Yet,sincetheSacramentsarenotmerely amatterofhumanco-operation;thegraceofGodcanand doestriumph.ButthenormalprayeroftheChurchand ofthepractisingCatholicistobedeliveredfromasudden andunprovideddeath.
SpitfirePilotFoundNearly ThreeYearsAfterCrash
RequiemMasswascelebrated bytheMostRev.BishopGsell, onthe14th.inst.,atSt.Mary's, Darwin,forSergeant-PilotColin WilliamDunning,whoseremains werefoundatFogBay,40 milessouth-westofDarwin, nearlythreeyearsafterthe Spitfirehewasflyingcrashed there.
ColinDunningwastheyoungersonofMr.andMrs.S.L. Dunning,ofRestormelAvenue, FullartonEstate,S.A.,whowere broughttoDarwinbyR.A.A.F. Servicepla.ieforthefuneral.
InApril,1944,Sgt.-PilotDunning,incompanywithotheraircraftofNo.452SpitfireSquadron,wasonanaltitudetest, whenhereportedbyradiothat hisenginewascuttingout.He lostheight,butwhentheengine seemedtoreturntonormal, againclimbed.At25,000feet heenginecutoutaltogether, andhecrash-divedintothe scrub.Oneortwooftheaccompanyingplanesturnedback totakebearingsofthespot wherehecrashed,butnosignof itwasvisible.Otheraircraft latertookupthesearch,butno traceofWreckagecouldbe found. ItwaswhileGeorge,anaboriginal,wasonawalkaboutafew weeksagothathediscovered theplane,andimmediatelyit wasreportedasearchparty,includingSgt.A.E.McNab,of DarwinPolice,andFl./Lt.Moo ney,ofR.A.A.F.,setoutinMr. LeoHickey'slugger.Theylocatedthesceneofthecrash,and broughtbacktheremainsofthe pilottoDarwin.
Themarkingsoftheplane wereclearlydiscernibleunder thecamouflagepaint,andcheckedwithrecordsatR.A.A.F., Darwin,revealedthepilot'sidentity.Considerabledenturetreatmentalsohelpedverifyidentity. Sgt.Dunninghadbeenposted missing,presumeddead,for nearlythreeyears,andhisparentswereveryrelievedtoknow exactlywhathadhappened,and thatdeathwasobviouslyinstantaneous,astheyfearedhemay havelandedincrocodileorbuffalocountry,ormaybeliving withblacks,milesoutinthejungle.

TheParsonsfamilythenjoina groupofdroversatWyndham, ledbyDanMcAlpine(Chips Rafferty)intheirdesperateundertakingofdrivingcattleacross Australia.Thefilmtellshow theycarriedoutthejob,despite hardshipsandmisfortunesthat
wouldhavebrokenlesserhearts.
Inthefilmtherearemagnificentsweepingscenesoftheinland,ofcattlestampedes,swimmingcrocodile-infestedrivers, trappingandbreakinginaherd ofbrumbies,andmanyother stirringscenes.Thephotographymakesthefilm.The camera'streatmentofthebroad sweepofcountryanditsstrange, oldhills,oftheseethingstruggle,andthemadstampedeof thethirst-crazedherdarejustas expressiveasanylineoractor inthefilm.Therealismisso intensethatonealmostfeels "theburnin'heatthatdazzles asitdancesonthesand"and thesweatysmellofthebullocksastheylumberuparocky incline.
TheCast.
Forthefinepreciousaspects ofthegeneralnationalcharacter, "TheOverlanders"presents,in thehandfulofcharacterswho comprisethecastofthefilm, theessenceofthequalitiesthat havebuiltupaCommonwealth intheshortspaceof150years orso.Thefilm'scharactersauthenticAustraliansasthey are-aremoreorlesstraditional filmtypes.Theactingisnaturalandapartfromafewweak romanticinterludesquiteconvincing. Somuchhasbeen writtenrecentlyaboutChips Rafferty,thestarofthefilm, thatthereislittletoadd.It willsufficetosaythatasthe lean,laconicbossdroverhegives anoutstandingperformanceIn speech,action,andcharacter,he approachesclosertotheAustralianEverymanthananypreviousactor.TheWestralian, JohnNugentHayward,handled theunspectacularpartofPa Parsonswithquietcompetence, andDaphneCampbell,ashis daughter,althoughmoreatease onahorsethaninafewlove scenes,wassweetandunaffected.
PeterPagan,asthemerchant seaman,freshlyturneddrover, wasapleasantlyspoken,natural youngcove,andJohnFernside, it,amildlyexaggeratedroleofa comicne'er-do-wellwithanapparentshadypast,providedmost ofthecomedy.
Onlytwonationalproblems aretouchedon.Bothwithdelicaterestraint.Thefirstisthe futureoftheNorthernTerritory.Theother,concerningthe positionoftheaboriginal,isreducedtosimpletermsintheremarkmadebyoneofthecharacters,whoisaskedtoexplaina songcroonedbyoneofthenative drovers:"Iexpectheissinging ofthepastdaysofhispeople, whentheywerehappy."
Inconclusion,itisonlyfairto statethat"TheOverlanders"is notaperfectfilm.Someofthe panegyricsofsomeofthecritics andtheusualnewspaperpublicityneedmodification.AsI haveindicatedpreviously,itis almostadocumentaryfilm,and itsenthrallinginterestcomes fromtheinterestofthesubject. Theendingisratherweakand theloveinterestisonthesame subtlelowleveloftheAmerican Westernfilm.Asthepsychologicalelementislacking,Isupposefewpeoplewouldwantto seeittwice.Takemytip,however.Itiswellworthseeing. Itsstark,simpletheme,thesuperbsettingsandphotography, andnaturalcharacterisations willwellrepayavisitbyboth youngandold. -"GROUCHO."

InterestingExperimentatHisMajesty's LeonGordon'srecord-breaking"WhiteCargo"openedtoa heart-breakinghouseatHisMajesty'sTheatreonMonday,January20.ThedirectorsofGeneralAmusementsLtd.mustbe havingmanyanxiousmoments wonderingwhethertheirenterpriseinattemptingtorestore theprofessionaltheatretoPerth willberewardedbysufficient publicsupport.Certainlyitis aventureworthyofeveryencouragement.
Formanyyearswehavehad inthiscityaverygoodamateurtheatre.Therehavebeen excellentshowsrepeatedlyfrom theRepertoryClub,thePatch TheatreGroup,andfromvariousotherindependentbodiesinterestedindrama.Latterly therehavebeentwosuperbeffortsbytheCathedralPlayers.
Amateurproductions,however, alwayshavetheirlimitations. Themostseriousofthesein Perthisprobablythelackofa goodstage.Itispreciselythis lackwhichMr.BruceCarroll proposestoovercomebymaking HisMajesty'sTheatreavailable. Thedreamoftheenthusiastic play-goerwouldseemtobefulfilled.'Andyet,asrecorded above,theinaugurationofthis newschemehasnotbeenmarked byauspiciouscircumstances. Whatcanbethereasonforthis seemingpublicapathy?
Iamnotatalosstosuggest possiblereasons,andalthoughI amnotpersuadedthatanyof themprovidesadequateexplanation,Ithinkitmightbeuseful toconsiderthesepossibilities.
First,thereisthepossibility thattheplayssofaroffered"PeterPan,"andnow"White Cargo"-arenotgoodenough. Bothareextremelywell-known tothegeneralpublic,andthereforetheactualproductionneeds toreachaveryhighstandardin ordertomakepeopleenthuse overit.Isubmitthat,while theproductionshavecertainly beenpleasing,theyhavenothit thereallyhighspotsofdramatic artistry.Asacorollarytothis firstpointitshouldberememberedthattheplaygoingportion ofthepublicisdistinctinits
likesanddislikesfromtheremainderofthecommunity.Regularplaygoershaveacquired standardsofcomparisonwhich tendtomakethemcritical;they willnottoleratetheslipshod worktoooftenseennowadays inthecommercialtheatre.And ifoneisplanningtoproduce legitimatestageplays,itisto theplay-goingpublicthatthe primaryappealmustbemade.
Secondly,itmaybesalutary tolookcloselyatthepersonnel engagedbyGeneralAmusementsLtd.TheScyllaand
thatoldfavotiriteshavegotto bedonebxtremelywellwhenrevived.Acontrarycourseappearstobethechoiceofmany sponsorsinEngland,whereliving,playwrightsarecontiinually beingaskedtowritenewplays. Thepreamblehasbeenlong but,Ithink,advisable.Now forafewwordsabout"White Cargo."
Onthewholetheplayiswell worthavisitbypatronsinterestedinfosteringtheattempt tobringbackliveartiststoHis Majesty's.Itispleasing,too, toseethatlocaltalenthasagain beentapped-notthecreamof it,byanymeans,becausethisis impossible.Amateuractors havetoearntheirdailybreadin deviousways;itisnotpracticableforthemajorityofthemto

AnEntertainingMusical
Althoughvastlydifferentfrom theoriginalfilmmadeabout twelveyears-ago,andwhichstarredJanetGaynor,LewAyres, andthelateWillRogers,thelatestversionofPhilStong'sbucolicnovel,"StateFair,"isvery pleasantentertainment.
SketchedagainstthecolourfulbackgroundofIowa'sannualfair-whichissomuchlike ourownagriculturalshow-the storyrelatestheadventuresofa farmingfamily,Motherand FatherFrakeandtheirsonand daughterontheirannualvisit totheFair.Whilefather's champion,romantically-minded boarhasafleetingflirtationwith thecoyoccupantofanear-by pen,motherhasanxiousmomentsawaitingtheannouncing ofthejudges'verdictsinthe home-madepicklessection,and withdiversionssuchasthese oneisnotwhollysurprisedto findthechildrenexhibitingremarkableingenuityinblending romancewiththeiramusements.
Thepopularteamofsongwriters-RitchardRodgersand OscarHammersteinII.-have providedagaymusicalscore, andtwoofthesongsareworthy ofmention.Theyarethe1946 AcademyAwardhittune,"It
MightasWellbeSpring,"and theliltingwaltz,"It'saGrand NightforSinging."Although muchofthedramaticmaterialof thenovelhasbeensacrificedfor tunefulanimation,manywill overlooktheweaknessofthe plot,becausealotofimaginationhasgoneintotheproductionwithitsgleefulcarnivaltimeatmosphere.
Castintherolemadefamous byJanetGaynorwefindJeanne Crain,withDanaAndrewsplayingthereporterwhoawakens herinterestinlove.DickHaymes,makinghisbestscreenappearancetodate,isthesonwho learnsaboutheartachesfrom thedance-bandcharmer,Vivian Blaine.Thefatherandmother areperfectlyportrayedbyCharlesWinningerandFayBainter. Thepartnershipisideal,and theirhumourisquietandunforced.DonaldMeek,Frank McHugh,andPercyKilbridealso succeedinminorroles.

ArundelNixonplaysWitzel (TheManWhoStays)witha mixtureofrealismandhumour. Attimesheinfusesajarring noteofburlesqueintohisplaying.Itseemsthatheisstrivingmanfullymostofthetimeto resistthetemptationtoclown. Consequentlyhegetsoutof characterandhisactingloses powerdisconcertingly.
GloriaMellody,asTondeleyo, isexcellent.Inhertworolesat HisMajesty's(shehadthetitle rolein"PeterPan")shehasdemonstratedrealartistryand greatversatility.Sheisundoubtedlytalented.Itwasgood towatchtheabandonwithwhich sheflungherselfintothecharacterofTondeleyo.Heracting ismarkedbyintelligenceand sincerity.
KeithMichellwasalsoimpressiveasLangford(TheMan WhoCameOut).Atfirstalittleover-confident,hesettledinto theatmosphereoftheplayvery wellindeed.Inthedramatic secondAct,wheretheproduction reachesitspeak,hewasallthat couldbedesired.Othersinthe playareLloydFerguson,Victor Brooks,PhilipMoranandLloyd Prider.Theplaywasproduced byArundelNixon.
Thesetting,abungalowinAfrica,wassuggestiveoftheatmospheredemandedby"White Cargo,"andthelightingwas adequate.ChrisGosperwasat thepianotodispenseincidental music.
