Overtheyears,andparticularly duringthewaryears,anumberof pseudo-culturalandpseudo-intellectualmovementshavemushroomed inPerth.BurtheAdultEducation Schemehasnoodiumattachingto it,andtheAnnualSummerSchool isentitledtoberegardedasan honestefforttomaintainand spreadworthwhileattitudesamong thepeople.Ifthesponsorshave anaxetogrinditiscertainlynot averybluntandobviousone,and thewayisthrownopenforas manyashaveaxestobringthem along.TheCommunists,ofcourse, bringbattle-axes,andtheycomein battalions,eachmanwithhisaxe slungoverhisshoulderasifitwere aspade.Thesearethecrypto. Cemmunists,tocoinadescription suggestedbyProfessorFox'sreferencetocrypto-Fascists.They are,infact,ouroldfriendsthe PinkBrethren.

FortheSummerSchool,despite itsfestiveside,isfundamentallya seriousbusiness.Eachdayhas it:imetableofwork,andtheAdult EducationBoardstrives,aceording toitslights,topresenttoallmembersoftheSchoolundervarious guisesacentralthemeofcurrent interest.

ThisyearthethemeIs"Democracy'sDefencesintheAtomic Age."Theunderlyingthoughtis, toquotetheDirector,"that,asfar aslaymencannowjudge,theonly effectivedefencesagainst the atomicbombwillbetheresistances whichdemocraticcommunities themselvesdevelopintheirown politicalandsocialinstitutions,in theirwayoflifeandintheirrelationswithotherpeoples."

Inadditiontothe"all-in"see,'ens(whentheSchoolasawhole sinksitsteethintosomeaspectof the:centraltheme),provisionis madedailyforafollow-upofa 'electedlineofstudy.Thusatthe onetimethereareseveralactivities progressing,eachofwhichmaybe regardedasa school-within-a -school.ThereisaSchoolof Music,aSchoolofDrama,aCourse onElementaryLibraryTechnique, aCourseonTwentiethCentury Chemistry,aCourseonCurrent Events,aCourseonArtsand Crafts(PracticalWork).Groups studentsgotheirownwayin thesemattefs,butcometogcnlier a:regularintervalsforaresumptiesoftheonslaughtonthecentraltheme,or"motif,"oftheSummerSchoolingeneral.

Theeveningsaregivenoverto entertainmentsorotherfunctions ofacommunitynature.Thepublicatlargeisencouragedtocome inontheseventures,andsolast Saturdaynightabouttwothousand peoplewatchedtheinitialperformaneeintheSomervilleOpenAir AuditoriumofHumperdinek'sFairytaleOpera,"HanselandGretel." Iconsideritisintheorganisationofthesemusicalanddramatic treatsforthepublicthattheAdult EducationBoardachievesitsgreatestsuccess.Fromtimetotime first-rateconcertartists,suchas Mr.PaulSchramm,whoisnowin Perthunderengagementtothe Board,areheardeitherinWinthrop HallorintheSomerville'Auditorium,theEveryman's'Musicseries 1.asbecomearegularfeature,and letterlytheBoardhasturnedits attentionincreasinglytodramaas ameansoffosteringaninterestin culturalpursuits.Wewillnot readilyforgettheboldexperiment aboutthistimelas;yearwrensevoralaccomplishedvocalistsfrom Adelaidewereimportedinorderto strengthenalocalpresentationof Mozart's"CosiFar,Tutte."The occasionwasunique,asthesponsorsdefiedallconventioninrem (bringMozartinEnglishandinthe openair.Thatseeminglymadgamblehasbeenrepeatedwithoverwhelmingsuccesswithinthelast fewdays.

Theappreciationbylargeaudiencesofhigh-classstageentertainmentsisatangibleandaheartwarmingthing.Permediumof 'bestageorconcertplatformthe AdultEducationBoardcanbring treasuresofourculturalheritage toapopulacestarvedofthefood

THEFAILURE.

ThefailureoflecturesanddiscussiongroupswithintheUniversitycanbeattributedlargely,I think,totheregrettablefactthat theUniversityhasabdicateditsauthoritytoteach.Intherealmof Artsitiscertainlytruethatno dcerineisinenleanad.Indeed

dogmaisreviledasahatefulthing.

Youngmenandwomen-scarcely morethanchildrenintellectuallyareblandlytoldtothinkforthemselves,whileallthewhiletheyare ledbytheirelders,whooughttobe theirteachers,downatrackwhich leadstoamentalvacuum.

Thesadpartofitisthatthe teachersthemselvesarebefuddled andhavetiodynamicphilosophyof fifetosustainthem.InaCommunistuniversitytheteaching wouldbeMarxian;inaCatholic universitytheteachingwouldbeCatholicandthereforetrulyChristian. Ineithercasetheteachingwould inpurposefulandthestudents wouldknowwheretheystood.But auniversityestablished'inline withtheworn-outliberaltradition ofWesterndemocracy,therecanbe nothingbutconfnaedthinkingand dreadfulinaction.Thedie-hards ofliberalism,thoughnoonedoubts :h'eirgoodwill,arereluctanttorelinquishthesearchforaviamedia betweenleftandright,when,in fact,nosuchroadexists.The wholeworldisfastsplittinginto twocamps,andthoseWhodonot putthemselvesononesideorthe otherwill'beswallowedinthe abyss.Thetimefortheorisingis past,andthecallnowisfor"Actionstations!"

Weprotestagainstthisillegalpractice!"Theinterrupterwasimmediatelyjoinedbyhiscolleagues whocommencedchanting"We won'thavetheMass."Secretary oftheProtestantUnioninLondon, explaining,theconductofmembers ofhisorganisation,stated:"Thisis thebeginningofanintensivecamp:demwehaveplannedfortheMerseyside."

ItisinterestingtonotethatmilitantProtestantismofthe"NoPopery"varietyisstillaliveinEngland to-day.andalthoughweasCatholicscannotacceptthevalidityof HighChurchAnglicanordersnor thevalidityoftheir"Mass,"wedo realisethesincerityofthatsection oftheAnglicancommunitywhoare valiantlystrivingtorestorethat Sacramentallifetheywererobbed ofduringtheReformationyears. Theformofreligiousintolerance displayedinLiverpoolisnotanew experienceforHighChurchmen.

Thereisanopinionheldbynot afewthatthereisnosuchthing asatheismarisingoutofintellectualdifficulties,thatcompleteapostasystemsfromthepracticalrejectionofthemorallaw.Pis easytounderstandthatforaman whosehabitsoflifeareradicallyat oddswithnaturalmoralityandwho i3notpreparedtoreformhislife, thefirststeptowardsatheismhas beentaken,Firsthewillattempttomakeexcuses,torationalisehisconduct,andfinding:his processunsatisfactorybothtohimselfandtoothers,willeventually disposeofthemorallawbydenyingtheexistenceofitsAuthor.In theAgesofFaiththerewas,alas! agreatdealofinquiry,butthere wasnopretenceeitherthatsin wasjusticiableasacatharsisfora repressedlibidoorthatitdidnor exist.Sinwasclearlyrecognised asawilfulrevoltagainstalaw which,however,didnotloseitsvaliditesearesultofthedefiance Howevergustythesinner,heknew

CHURCHOFENGLAND DISCIPLINE

ThereportofacommitteeappointedbytheAnglicanArchbishop ofBrisbanetoconsiderchurchdisciplinehasmadesomerecommendationswhichhavecausedquitea flotterinthedove-cotes.Inshort itisproposedtorefusemarriage andChristianburialtothosewho arenotregularchurch-goers,and baptismtochildrenwhoseparents donotattendworship.Itisinterestingtonotethattheproposed newdisciplineisfarmorestringent thanthecodewhichtheCatholic Churchenforces.Forexample,a Catholicpriestwouldneverrefuse baptismexceptintherarecase wheretherewasnoprospectwhat. everthatthechildwouldbe broughtupinhisreligion.Again, inthecaseofmarriage,thegraces oftheSacramentwouldnotbedeniedtocarelessoreventolapsed Catholics,provided,ofcourse,they werenottreatingtheSacrament withcontempt.NorwouldChristianburialberefusedtosuch. Onlytonotoriouspublicsinners andtosuicideswhodieunrepentantarethelastritesdenied.

Itseemstome,firstly,thatthe ('hurchofEnglandwouldhavevery poorprospectsindeedofenforcing sucharigiddiscipline,andevenif itcould,thatsuchharshness wouldbeforeigntoOurLord's conceptionoftheChurch.From theverynatureoftheSacraments itcanbeseenthattheChurchwas tobemuchmorearefugeforsinnersthanaclubforgood people. Thejustmanwouldfallseventy timesseveneachday,butthegreat tribunalofPenancewastobethere toreceivehistearsandtogivehim releasefromsin.Timeandagain ChristcomparedtheChurchnow toauerfuloffishofallkinds,large andsmall,edibleandinedible,which wouldremainunsorteduntilthe LastDay.Again,toatreefullof birdsofallplumages,manyofthem nuisancesandpests.Oragainit wasafieldofWholesomewheat

Withhimonthatcommitteewere A.I.RykovandMichaelTomsky, notedBolshevicleaders.Theformer wastheninchargeofSovietpro' ductionandwasabouttotakea leadingpartinassailingthe"sabo, tau"anddiscontentintheDonetz Basin.Thelatterhadlongbeen leaderoftheSoviettradeunions.

Theyweretobeexecutedlikewise -RykovalongwithBurkharin, Tomskybyallegedlyshootinghim, selfwhenhelearnedhewasaccused ofbeingassociatedintreasonwith Zinoviev.

Itmadeonegiddysometimestryingtokeeptrackofwhowaswho. Thatis,whowasingraceandwho wasabouttobeshot.

Therewasthestrangecaseof ComradeYezhov,forinstance.He wasthenewly-appointedheadofthe SovietSecretPolicewho"exposed" themenwhowerepurgedinthe threebigtreasontrials.

Amongthesewashisownsuperior andpredecessor,G.G.Yagoda,who asheadofthesecretpoliceupto 1937,wassaidtohaveplottedto assassinateStalin.

Recallagain1935andtheprotestbytheUnitedStatesGovernmentagainstSovietsubversiveprops, gandainAmerica.Themanwho repliedfortheSovietGovernment wasForeignViceCommissarNicholas Krestinsky.

Threeyearslaterthatgentleman whohadsoboldlyliedtoAmerica indefenceofStalin,wasshotasa traitortotheSovietregime.

Hewasoneofthoseinvolvedin thepurgetrialofMarch,1938-and evenmadeapitifulattempttode fendhimself.

TheForeignTradeCommissarfor Russiain1935wasA.P.Roscngoltz. Itwashewhomadealltheannounce, mentsastowhatapossiblebreakin relatidnsbetweentheUnitedStates andRussiawouldmeanintrade.

Thelecturewasthesecondin theseriesinspiredbythecommon theme,"Democracy'sDefencesin theAtomicAge."Thethoughtunderlyingthisthemeisthatdemocraticcommunitiesmustpresenta solidfronttothemenaceofdestructionrepresentedintheatomic bombbysoorganisingdomestic lifethatwarwillbecomepermanentlyoutlawedbyallnations.

Theessentialdifferencebetween thetwoapproachestotheproblemofestablishingworldsecurity wasthat,whiletheonemethod

Manymorewereshotsecretly, erasedinanequallyfoggyfashion.In 1928,Communistofficialdocuments reveal,thegreatcrybytheReds everywherewas"SaveBelaKun!"He wastheleaderofthefrustratedRed revolutioninHungaryimmediately afterWorldWarI.In1928,hewas inAustria,buttheHungarianGov ernmentwasaskingforhisextradition.

OnMay8,1928,the"Pravda," officialSovietpublication,ranapiece headed"TheDangerofBelaKun's ExtraditionintotheHandsofthe HungarianHangmen."

That"danger"wasaverted;the HungarianGovernmentnevergot theirhandsonhim.Buthedidgo totheSovietUnionandafterthe SeventhCongressoftheCommunist Internationalin1935hewassecretly putoutoftheway.HehadrevoltedagainstStalin'swishes-and deathwastheresult.

STALIN'SFRIEND,TOO

Sowasit,too,withA.Yunukidze, themanwhosupervisedtheSoviet electionswhichgaveStalin'smachine such90percentvictories.Known asStalin'sclosestfriend,thisman fromGeorgiaalsowasextinguished. Therewasnotrial;hislifewas simplysecretlysnuffedout.

Withsuchmethodsofreprisal fromthedictatorshipwithinthe Sovietborders,itcanbeunderstood withwhateasethedreadedsecret police,nowtheN.K.V.D.,wouldresorttoassassinationabroad.Thatis anotherstory,tobetoldanotherday.

Butthedarknessofoppressionthat istheSovietUnionisthick,asdeep aswastheoppressionoverHitlerite Germany.

NowondertheSovietdictatorsfeel theneedforforeignexpansionasa remedyfortheillswithintheirbarders,

nationalco-operationithadgained withinitsownfamilyofna.ions.

Concluding,thelecturerappealed forawidetoleranceofsystemsof thoughtdifferingfromourown. Wemustlookforthefundamental decenciesinpeople.Weshould trytoremovetheconditionsinour countrywhichmakeRussianpropagandasuccessful.Weshould subordinateeconomicintereststo highermotives.Weneedachangedstandardofvalues.Itwasnot theideasinanideologythatmattered;whatmatteredweretheemotionsandpreferencesofmen.

ThestudentswentawaytodismissProfessorFox'slecturefor aboutanhour,butreturnedwith suchgarbledaccountsoftheirfindingsthattheLeader(Dr.Lloyd Ross)wasunabletostraighten anythingoutbeforetheexpiration oftheperiodforcedanadjournment.
