InthenaturalcourseitistheinherentpenaltyofOriginal Sin;inthosecaseswhereitisexercisedbytheStateitis apunishmentforsocialcrimes.Euthanasiaistheone formofdeathwhichisimposedontheinnocent.The soleoffenceoftheincurablysickisthattheyoffendthe aesthetictasteofthe"fit."Thestrongcannotbearthe sightoftheweak.Asinthecaseofsterilisation,here againisthetragicallylaughabletalkaboutitsbeingvoluntary.Yetthemajorityofpeoplewhowillbesacrificedin thelethalchamberarecertifiedidiotswhoareincapableof givingvalidconsent.Theothersarepeoplesoacutelyill andinpainastobeinnoproperdispositionfortheseekingoftheirconsent.Actuallythehumanitariansarenot morethanverballyanxiousaobutthesmallmatterofpersonalconsent.Theyaremovedmorebythefinancial disabilitiesofrelativesandoftheStatethanbythephysicalcalamityoftheincurablysick.
Everyhumanitariansuggestionproposesthesettingup ofamedicalbureaucracywhichwillcontrolhmanlifein everyessentialmajorpoint.Youcannotbehornwithout theirconsent,norcanyoumarryandproducechildren. Leastofallmayyoudieinpeace.Evenafterdeaththey willseetoitthatyourbodyischarredintoashestoeliminate,asitwere,anypossibilityoftheresurrectionofthe body.Again,asinthecaseofsterilisation,thereis noconsderationwhateverofthepossibilityofaconstructiveremedy.Yet,ontheadmissionofcompetentmedicalmen,curesmightbeevolvedforafflictionswhichare atpresentincurable.Therewouldbeanendtomedical researchbecauseeuthanasiawouldsavetheGovernment anamountofmoneyatpresentdevotedtoit,andwould savethefaceofthedoctorfromtheadmissionoffailure. Itwouldalsogreatlyfacilitatethemedicalcourseoftrainingasquiteanumberofdiseasescouldbebracketedunder thegeneralcure-"euthanasia."
Presumably,adoctorwouldreceivethesamefeefora deathasforacure,andthoughitmightnotbeaslucrative asaprolongeddisease,itwouldyethavecompensationsin thetotalabsenceofresponsibility.Orperhapstheeuthanasiafeemightbesoadjustedastoapproximatetoanaveragedlyprolongedillness.Onsuchhumaneandelevating linesmustthenoblemindofthehumanitariantravelIt isuselesstocontinuewithprotestationsofhisall-effacing loveofhumanity.Youcannotreallylovethatwhich youdon'tunderstand.Andthehumanitariancertainlydoes notunderstandthatmanhasasoul,capableofattaining thepeaksofspiritualperfection,preciselyfnthosecases ofpainandsufferingwhichtohimaretheunspeakable evilsoflife.Ifpainistakenaawyfromtheworld, soareallthemoralqualitiesofcourage,patience,reparationforsin,andsubmissiontotheWillofGod.Butthe humanitarianhasriotheardoftheWillofGod,norof Christ'sperfectsubmissiontoitintheunspeakablethroes ofthePassion.Toputitquitesimply,thehumanitarian isnotaChristian,orhecouldnottalkgliblyaboutmurder oftheincurablysickwithoutapassingreferencetothe CrossofChrist.

InhisbroadcastlastChristmas Eve,thereigningPontiff-Pius XII.-announcedtotheCatholic worldthattheSacred.Collegeof Cardinalswouldberestoredtoits fullstrength.Thatannouncement was,initself,anoteofconfidentre. news)andrebirth;oftheChurch militantfacingthefutureandmakingfreshdispositionstomeetthe changedconditionsofwhatisobvi. ouslyanewera.Butwhatis significantofthenewcreationsis thattheyrangeliterallyfromChina toPeru,forthePopesees:he wholeglobeasthehomeofthe ChurCh,andthenewcreativesare intended,ashesaid,inhisbroadcast,toemphasisetheuniversal characterofthebodywhoseearthly headheis.
ThewidediffusionoftheCatholic Church,reflectedinthenamesof thenewly-appointedCardinals,isa geographicalextensionquiteasremarkableasherhistoricalextensionintime,andmakesherthe greatestaswellastheoldestofthe organisedsocieties,evenconsidered apartfromheruniquenature,Front theChurch'sleaderseverywhere theremustnowcomealeadership whichwillmakeordinarylayCatholicsfeelwhattheirmembership oftheUniversalChurchis-whatit means-andhowitisto-daythe greatesthopeoftheworld.
Perhapstherewasanoteof warninginthePope'sbroadcast whenhereferredto"thistimeof expectancy,"inspiteofwhichthe Church.confrontsthefuturewith allthevigourthatisthepledgeof herdivinefoundation.
TheChurchto-daypresentsthe humanracewithaprincipleofintegrationwhentheseculardriftis headlongtowardsdisintegration, justasshearrestedthefragmentationofsocietyatthedissolutionof theRomanEmpire15centuriesago, Clearlywehavereachedtheendof anepoch,andthewordsofSt.Gregory-ofTours,spokeninthefifth century,couldwellberepeatedtoday:"Theworldgrowsold."
WhenSt.GregoryofToursspoke thesewordsthebarbarianinvasions hadbegun,thepoweroftheimperialGovernmentintheWesthad beenbrokendown,thegeneralstandardofculturehadbeenalready greatlydebased,everywherewas disorderandthestrifeofcontendingparties.
Toanybodyconsciousofwhat thefullRomanpeacehadbeen,it mustindeedhaveseemedthatthe worldwasgrowingold.Itisimportanttorememberthatthebarbariansm-lieoverrantheRoman Empire,didnotdesire,evenifthey couldhaveachievedIt,thedestructionofthatEmpire.Whatthey
wantedwastoenjoyitsbenefits. Furthermore,theypresentedno fundamentaldangerstoit,since theyhadnothingtoputinitsplace -theycoulddebase,butnotconstruct.Andinthemostimportant matterofall-Religion--theyhad noeubstitute-theyhadevenlost faithintheirpaganism.SoeventuallytheWestwasabletoabsorb itsinvaders,andalthoughtheloss itsustainedwasveryreal,thefoundationsremainedvirtuallyintact.
To-dayweliveintimesverylike thoseofSt.GregoryofTours,but wehavenottheconsolationofimaginingthatthebarbariansofour tamedonotdesirethedestruction ofthecivilisationwehaveknown, TheCommunistRevolutionofthe alth.centuryisarevolutionofdestructionButwhatismostdisturbingisthis,thatthecivilised worldto-dayisnor,astheRomans were,unitedinrecognising:he perilforwhatitis.Thereare manybroughtupintheWestwho subscribetothearidandpoisonousdoctrineofCommunism.Itis this,morethananythingelse,that makesthepositionoftheChristian Westsoprecarious,

UnliketheHunsand&wile,the barbariansto-daycomewithanew religionoftheirown-asecular messianicreligionwhichcouldonly appealtoagenerationwhichhad lostitsfaith.Thereisnothingin Romanhistory-orforthatmat terintherecordedannalsofmankind-toequalthetragicsequence ofeventssinceJune,1941,and whichIcanbestdescribeastheabjectsurrendertoCommunism.All thatisnowleftofwhatwasonce ChristianEuropelieswestofthe RiverElbe,andincludesWestern Germany,Denmark,Hollandand Belgium,France,Spain,Portugal andItaly,withNorwayandSweden precariouslysituatedabovetheBaltic.Truly,theAsiaticscourgeof CommunismhasspreadacrossEuropelikeamediaevalplague-with whatultimateresultnonecansay.
