WhileMaximinwasstayingat Lyons,itwasreporteduponoath :hathehadbeenseenintoxicated, lyingintheroadatGrenoble,Atthe verymoment,infact,he,wasservingatMassattheShrileofOur Lady-ofFourviere.Againand again,itwassaidthateitherheor Melaniehadrecanted.
Inparticular,theholyCureof Ars-St.JohnVianney-wasmisin. formedbyhisowncuratethat Maximinhadconfessedtoaliein thematterandthenmisrepresent edintosayingthathe(theCureof Ars)nolongerbelievedinLaSalette.True,theformeruntruth severelyshookthesaintlypriest, andhiscurateobtainedhissignaturetoadocumentwhichsaidthat Maximinhadrecanted,

Itseemsindisputablethatthereisagreatincreasein crimesofviolencethroughoutthecountry,especiallyinsex crimesofaparticularlyrevoltingnature.Whilenosatisfyingstatisticsareavailable,itissufficienttonotethe frequencyofpressreportswhichdonot,moreover,lay greateremphasisonsuchcrimesthanbefo4thewar.It isplatitudinousthatduringandaftereachwarthereis unleashedatorrentoflicentiousness.Theverynature ofwarpresentsaparadoxwhereinthereisinsistenceona stern,externaldisciplineontheonehandandatleastconnivanceatmoraldegeneracyontheother.Thefoundationsonwhichsocietyseemsnormallytorestsosecurely are,inwar,rudelyshaken.Thechiefevilinthisregard istheinterruptionoffamilylifewherebythehusbandis removedfromthehomeforlongperiods:oftenthemother isforcedbylaworcircumstancestotakeupawar-time job,andthereisinevitablyneglectofchildrenthroughlack ofproperparentalsupervisionanddiscipline.

Themoralevilsofawarfaroutweighitsimmediate physicalsufferings,fortheyendureinthegenerationsto follow.Butthetwoarecloselyinter-related.Men, tensefromconstantpresenceofdeathandcutofffromnormalsocialintercourse,maybetemptedtomoralexcesses ofmanykinds.Likewiseinthedefeatednationspoverty,hunger,diseaseanddespairreflecttheirfullravages inprostitution,theft,violence,andsheerabandonment. Nordoesthecessationofhostilitiesautomaticallyhealthe heavywoundsofthenations.Forwar,intermsofsocial ameliorationandmoralimprovement,representsaputting lackofthe'clock.Itisimpossibletofitintoanewand betterorderedsocietyhumanbeingswhohavebeenso morallyderanged.Thewaybackisanuphillpathof findingagainthespiritualfundamentalsandacknowledgingtheirvalidityandtheirpotentialitiesforpersonalrehabilitation.Therethenremainsforthewillthebitter, constantstruggleagainsttemptation,aidedbyprayerand ethermeansofgraceofferedbytheChristianFaith.

TorchlightProcession.
Thetorchlightprocessionwas extraordinaryimpressiveagainst abackgroundoftheilluminated numbersandnamesofthecamps. Thepilgrimspassedforovertwo hourscarryingtorchesandcandles.Afterpassingbeforethe PasilicaandtheGrotto,itwound throughthetownlikeahuge,brilliantly-colouredserpent. Wednesday,November13,wasa memorabledatefortheparishionersofAllHallows'Church,Boulder,foronthatdaythenew ChurchHall,inMoran-street,was opened,Asocialanddancewas heldtomarktheoccasion.Indedaringthehallofficiallyopened, Rev.FatherCarmodyexpressedhis deeppleasurethatalong-feltwant hadbeensatisfied,andthanked everyonefortheirco-operationfor havingsuchafinespacioushall builtinthedistrict,Thehall, withitsfullsizestageandtwofine anterooms,wouldbemostuseful forthevariousfunctionsthatwill beheldbythedifferentorganisationsassociatedwiththeChurch.
