THELONGANDTHE SHORT
PeterMauriaandDorothyDay, whofoundedandcontinuetoprovide'thedynamicfor"TheCatholicWorker"inNewYork,are representativeoftheschoolwhich isendeavouringtoimplementthe long-rangeidealsofCatholicsocialtheory.Thedistinctivefeaturesoftheirworkarethatitis foundedonpracticalChristian charity(justbeforethewarthey werefeeding9,000unemployed perday),itdoesthingsrather thanmerelytalkaboutthem 4witness-theirfarmingcommunes),anditstandsfortheutmostintellectuallibertyconsonantwithorthodoxy.
Thecombinationofcharityand practicalhardheadednessmayat firstblushseemill-consorted,but actuallytheyarecomplementary forthefirstbusinessoftheCatholicsociologistmustbetoattemptasolutionoftheparadox ofthetwindemandsofjustice andcharity.Forjusticerequires thateveryoneshallreceivehis due.andcharityprovidesfor thosewho,humanlyspeaking, havenoclaims.Ithasbeensaid, unwisely,thatthegreatcharitableorganisationsliketheSocietyofSt.VincentdePaulactuallyimpedetheinstitutionofa socialorderbasedonjustice,becausetheirbenefactionstendto keepthepoorquiet,ifnotcontent.Suchaview,however,is untenablebyCatholics,foritpostulatesthenecessityofclassstruggleandhencethe.inevitabilityof classhatred.
This,ofcourse,istospeakof charityintherestrictedsenseof loveofone'sneighbour,which mightturnouttobemerelyhumanitarianismbasedonsentimentality.Suchisnotthecase withthedisciplesof"TheCatholicWorker"Theirworkisani-
matedandsustainedbythelove ofGod,whichisverypractically attestedbythelivesofvoluntary povertypractisedbytheirleaders.Furthermore,whilethey doprovideforthepoor,theunemployedandsocialoutcasts, theyaimfundamentallytorestore humandignityandself-respect throughthecommunalownershipanddevelopmentofsmall farms.InthistheyareinhistoriccontinuitywiththeCatholicnotionofpropertysuchashas beenpreservedintheEuropean pessantries.Andsuchfree,cooperativeeffprtisthemosteffectiveanswertothosewhosetotalitarianfanciesurgethemonto evergreatergovernmentalcontrolandeventothecollectivisationofarableland.
Finally,the"CatholicWorker" movementadheresstrikinglyto thefullestindependenceof thoughtconsistentwithacceptanceoftheChurch'sauthority. DuringtheSpanishCivilWar,for example,theyrefusedtoendorse Franco'scauseeventhoughthat attitudeputthemoutofstep withtherestoftheCatholic world.Duringtherecentwar theyremainedsolidlypacifist, andmusthavesufferedconsiderablyinsodoing.Stilltheyhad thecourageoftheirconvictions, andtheywere'freetothinkas theydidwithoutincurringecclesiasticalcensure.
Thishealthyintellectualfreelancingisvividlyillustratedina recentissueof"TheCatholic Worker,"whenDorothyDaydiscusseswhetheritispossibleto Christianisetheworkingconditionsofmodernindustrialism. Sheclaimsthatthespiritual orientationofCatholicmovementswhicharemeanttoappeal totheworkersandpreventtheir apostasyfromtheFaithisfoundeduponaromanticviewofthe natureoftheirwork,whichisessentiallyfalse.Fromgoodmo-
tivesbutinadequateexperience theytendto"glamourise"dungareesandwhirlingwheels,whereasMissDaycontendsthatagreat dealofmodernmechanicalwork issoessentiallyde-huitianising thatitmuststuntthesoul.
Herviewsbetokentheinevitablecontroversythatmustarise onalargerwalebetweenthose respectivelypropagatingtheshort andthelongviewofaChristian socialorder.Thosewhoaimdirectlyfortherestorationofproperty, bothinsmallunitsofmachineryforthetradesandfor smallholdingsinland, whether workedpersonallyorco-operatively,areunderstandablyirritated withthosewhoclaimtohemore realisticinendeavouringtopatch upthesocialorderasitstands, Somehowtheformerfeelthatthe latterarehelpingtoprolonga sorrybusinesswhosecollapseis assuredanyway.
Whateverbethemeritsofthat controversy,itisplainlydesirabletofindasolution,forifthis ageofmechanicalmass-productionwhoseevilwillmultiplywith itsincreasingcomplexity,isbeyondspiritualregeneration,then i4wouldobviouslybebetterto concentrateonlong-rangeplans.
While,ontheotherhand,ifthe long-rangeplansaremerelyidealisticandunrealisable,weshould surelymakethehestofthingsas theyare.Butwithouttaking sidesitseemstomethatman canneverdeveloptohisfullstatureunderindustrialism,andthis hasbeenacknowledgedbythe appearanceofsuchcompromise proposalsashomesteadfarmsfor industrialworkers.Thecentral problem,however,istokeepalive andinmany'casestoawakenthe appetiteforliberty.Forwhen sufficientmenwanttobeeconomicallyfreebadlyenoughthey willfindthemeanstoachieveit. -000--
