TheTribunaldecidednottoincreasethenumberofwitnessesin thiscase.

Thatiswhythesaintsareour friendsandwhyinthisbusy modernworld,somanypeople arelookingtothemandwonderingovertheirlivesofprayerand flightfromdistraction.
Manybookshavebeenwritten aboutSt.TeresaofAvila,andthe storyofherlifeissimplytheaccountofherwayofprayer.She tellsusthatprayerisnothingelse thanbeingon"termsoffriend. shipwithGod,"thatitislikeenteringevermoreintotheinner roomsofthesoul'scastletofind OurKing,"HisMajesty,"dwelling there,thattheprogressislike thefloweringofabeautifulgardeninwhichwe,likegoodgardeners,dowhatwecan.
Itisthissimilitudeofthesoul asagarden,usedbeforebySt. Bernard,thatTeresaadoptsin thosechaptersofherautobiography(fromchaptersninetotwenty-two),whereshedigressesto speakofprayer.Shehasalready toldusaboutherhomeand childhood,ofhowshewasput intoaconventforhereducation, ofthethoughtsofareligiouslife andherrepugnanceforit,though shecouldseeitwasthesafest way.Shehastold,too,ofhow shebecamelessferventandwas
attachedtocertainfriendships. Shewascuredofaparalysisby prayertoSt.Joseph,butstillhad hotgivenherselfwhollytoher vocation.
Thenachangecame.Her fatherdiedaholydeathandSt Teresawasmoves.ADominicanFathergavenergoodadviceandtoldhernevertoomit hermentalprayer.
St.Teresabegantofollowhis adviceandtellsushowshelovedtothinkofOurLordinthose scenesofHislifevThereHewas mostlonely.Sheusedtogoto theGardeninOurLord'scompanyandfoundcomfortalsoin
formistakesandpossibledelusions. Therearefourways,shetells us,inwhichthegardenofour soulsmaybewateredinprayer. Inthebeginningwehavetoget thewaterfromthewellinbuekets.Wehavealreadybegun toremovetheweedsgrowing there,buttheseedsandplants needwater.Bringingthewater inbucketsisarduous.Itmeans wemustbeconstantlystriving againstourbadinclinations,recallingoursinsandfailings,often meditatingonOurLord'slife. LateronifitbeGod'sholywill, watermaybefoundmoreeasily.
Nowweuseawindlassandbucketsdrawingthewater.Thisis the"prayerofquiet."Thegardenerlosesthedesireofearthly things:comfortsandpleasant thingsmattertohimnothingat all.Thewaterishigherinthe wellandeasiertoget.Sothe memoryandimaginationarenot neededsomuch.Thewillisdirectedeasilytomakeactsoflove anddevotiontoGod.ItisGod's captiveandwantsonlytodoHis willonearth.Allthevirtues thriveinthegardenbecause God'sgraceisunhinderedbyour attachmenttoanyotherwill.We restquietlyinthoughtofGod andconfidentthatHiswillis doneonearthasitisinheaven. Thegardenerwouldbegladto leavetheworldaltogetherandbe atrestinGod.St.Teresacries outthatthisisafire,a"heavenlymadness,"andthatitconsists in"thehatredofthislife,thedesertionofitshonours,inbeing utterlyindifferentwhetherwe loseorgainanythingoreverything,providedthetruthbetold andmaintainedforthegloryof God."Andthenthereisthepatheticlittlesentence,"Idonot ,,aythatIamapersonofthis kind,butIwishIwas."
Somedaysthegardenwillbe blessedbyshowersfromthesky above.Nowinthisfourthway ofprayerGodmaygiveholygifts andSaintTeresespeaksofthose tokensofGod'slovewefindin someofthesaints.Butshedoes notfailtowarnuswemustbe cautious,thatthesethingsare God'spuregifts,thatthegardenermustnotbecomecarelessin hisdailyround,thattheground mustbewelldugbytroubles,persecutions.detractionsandinfirmities;therenevermustbeanyself interestnorattachmenttothe leastthing.
NowheredoesSt.Teresaimply thatthegardenerwilldispense withhistoolsusedinearlierdays. northattherewillbenoweedsto remove.Inthebeginningpeopleareoftentooanxious,theyarestiffandrefuseeventosmile whileatworkinthegarden:or theyaredisposedtobetooprudentabouttheirhealth.
Weneednotthinkwecannot dowithoutthisorthat.St.Ignatius,weremember,knowingwe usuallychoosethemorepleasant things,tellsusboldlytopray thatGodwillgiveus,anddis. poseustoaccept,whatismost disagreeableandunpleasant.Like himSt.Teresainsiststhatwe generallyflatterourselves,and thattliirecanbenohopewhile weseektheleastsupportinthis world."Itisthepaceofahen," shesays.Wewillbetemptedby Satantothinkthat"tohaveall werequirecontributestorecollection,becauseanxietiesdisturb prayer,"andatothertimesSatan willsaythatourstateinlifedemandsacertaindignityandobservanceofpolitedecorum,based onworldlymaxims.
Again,somepeoplewillgo aboutfindingthemotesin others,fullofzealtoimprove them,ortheymaybehinderedby tearfrommakingbigresolves.
Thegreatestdangerofallwill comewhenwearetemptedto giveupthetask.Wemaybegin togiveawaythefruitsofthegarden,tooeagerly.Weactnot withouthumility,butwithinsufficientdiscretion.Wethought wenevercouldlovetheold things,butonedaywefindthem riseupanddrawusafter.What shallwedo?Perhapsprayeris onlyamirageafterall.Better nottogoon.Betternottobe hypocrites,keepingupanoutwardshow,whileweknowwe lovethethingsofthisworld.BetternottobeintheGardenwith Judas,andbetrayourMaster. Noblertodesert,bettertofly away.No!criesTeresa.There mustbenogivingupprayer. Thewaterhadseemedclearbut nowthesunshinesthroughitand weseeitfullofathousandimpurities.WhenwelookatGod weareblindedbyHisglory,all Hiswondrousinfiniteperfection. Whenwelookatourselveswe wanttocloseoureyes,sowholly wretched,uncleanarewe.

Thereisaswordofthespirit, aswordofsorrow,whichpierces men'sinmosthearts,andwhen Teresa,John,orIgnatiuswrite, thoughtsarerevealedoutofmany hearts.
InSt.Teresa'saccountofthe Garden,wefindadistinguishing personalnote.St.Johniscalmer,grave,anaroofnessthatattractsus.Welongtofollowhim wherehehasfollowedOurLord inthedarknightandfreedom fromthisworld'sbonds."At the'endoflifeitisonlovethat weshallbejudged."St.Ignatiuslikewiseiscalm,sweetlyreasonable,drawingustoseehow thingsareofvaluesofaronlyas informedbyprayer.Yetthere aretimeswhenweseehissoul. thewatcherofMontserrat,the pilgrimintheHolyLand,when hetellsustomakeourprayer anexclamationofwonder,orto speakwithGod,asservantswith masters,orasafriendwithhis friend.

WhatfollowedcanonlybedescribedasasadAdvent,asombre autumn-nearlyayearofdeep tension,suspenseandmourning. ThecitywastakenoverandruledbytheGestapoanditstroops; lifeinthestreetsandsquares stopped..TheVaticanwaswatchedbySSsoldiers.Everyone fearedprovocations.Bombsfell ontheVatican;weknewwell fromwhichsidetheycame.An anti-aircraftbatterywasplaced intheneighbourhoodoftheVatican,orartillerywasdeliberately broughtpastit.Nevertheless,a lighteningoftheseworriescame withthewordthatRomewasstill tobeacceptedasanopencity.
Thesewerebuttheexternal events.Initssoulthecitywas experiencingsomethinglikethe daysofthecatacombs.Holy Rome,withitschurchesandconvents,itsdevoutsoulsandholy hearts,openedthedoorsoflove andmercy.Youngmen,honest officials,evenwomenandgirls, ranthedangerofbeingcaptured. Notinfrequentlyweheardthe screamsofthoseseizedtobedeported.Thousandsfoundrefuge andprotectionwiththetruechildrentheHolyCity.Foodwas veryscarce:howweretheseunfortunatesinhidingtobefed?
Butinspiteofeverydifficulty, zealforsoulsandthespiritof self-sacrifice,thespiritoftrue heroes,foundawaytohelp.In thosedaysRomesawglorious proofsofloveandmercy.

By"Roll-inLondonTavernwasthesceneof aspecialoccasiononWednesdayevening,October2,when,atits well-dressedtables,wereseated membersoftheOldAquinians' HockeyClubandguests,gathered togetherfortheannualdinner.Indeedaspecialoccasion,asitwasthe firstofsuchfunctionssince1940.It markedthecompletionofawon, derfulseasoninwhichtheclubhad shownofitsbestandthatitwas secondtononeinitshockey,ability, initsspiritandsportmanship.The teamshadshowntheycouldlose, butlostlikemen,congratulating theirvictors.Infact,agreattradi nonismakingitselfevidentinthe club-thatnomanwearingtheOld Aquinians'uniformonthefield shouldraisehisvoiceagainstoppo nentorumpire,whetherheberight orwrong,winorlose-atradition tobestrivenforandmastered.

Itisextremelydoubtfulwhether StanKelly,aspresident,hasever officiatedoveramorecongenial groupoffellowsthanthisbodyof OldAquinians.Overthetablesof LondonTavern,friendshipsof twenty-oddyears,havingstoodthe testoftime,werereboundmore stronglythanever.Itwasahappy eveningfortheyoungermembers, whorealisedthatwithsuchagrand spiritexistingintheclub,theyhad manyyearsofpleasanthockeyand goodfellowshipinfrontofthem.
