HowtheChurchObtainedPower toForgiveSins.
ButhowdidtheChurchobtain thispowerofforgivingsins?We mustalwaysrememberthatsinis anoffenceagainstthemajestyof Godforwhichsatisfactionmust bemade.Divinejusticedemands it.We.ofourselves,couldnot 'makesufficientatonement,becauseeverysinisaninfiniteoffenceHence,wesaythatsins areforgivenbyvirtueofthe meritsofJesusChrist.Our Saviour,byHisbloodydeathon thecross,hasmadethissatisfactionforallmed.Thesemerits areappliedtotheindividual throughtheestablishedchannels ofHisChurch.InthislightSt. PaulwritestotheEphesians whenhesays:"Ilebathprede)tinedus throughJesusChrtist untoHimself...andbathgraced usinHisbelovedSon,inwhom wehaveredemptionthroughHis blood,theremissionofsins,accordingtotherichesofHis grace."(EphI.,5-7.)
Keepingthesethoughtsinmind, wecanproceedtoshowhowthe Churchobtainedthepowertofor givesins.Hewhohasthepower toforgivesinscanundoubtedly committhispowertoothers. JesusprovedthatHepossessed thepowerofforgivingsins,and exercisedthispowerwhenHepardonedthesinfulMagdalene,the paralytic,thewomantakenin adultery,andothers.Thissame powerJesustransmittedtoHis Apostlesandtheirsuccessors whenHesaid:"Amen,Isayto you,whatsoeveryoushallbind Uponearthshallbeboundalsoin heaven:andwhatsoeveryoushall looseuponearth,shallbeloosed alsoinheaven."(Matt.XVIII., IS.)Thispowertobindandto loosecanmeannothingelsethan thepowertoforgiveortoretain sins.
Jesusmadethisstillmoreclear onanotheroccasion.Itwasthe eveningofthedayofHisglorious Resurrection.Tliehourwas late.FearkepttheApostlesin hiding.Tremblingandafraid, theyremainedbehindclosed doorsinthatupperchamber.At everysoundtheydreadedtheapproachoftheirenemies.Suddenly,amonthemstoodHe whomtheyhaddesertedonCalvary,whomtheyhadleftsolitary todieonthecross.ButHis firstwordsreassuredthemwhen Hesaid:"Peacebetoyou."And whenHehadsaidthis,Heshow-

Could anywordsbemoreclear,more readily-understood?TheApostlesknewwhatitwastoforgive sins.Theyhadwitnessedthe pardoningoftheparalyticandof thesorrowfulMagdalene.And nowtheyweretodoasChrist Himselfhaddone.Theywere beingsentasHehadbeensent fromtheFather.Theircommissionwasfromheaven.For, whenChristbreathedonthem,in thatinstantHispowerwascommunicatedtothemtoabsolve fromsin.And'thissamepower theApostlesexercisedimmediatelyafterChrist'sAscension.
