Trulyithasusurpedtheeducationalrightsofparentsandmade availableadeadsecularistsystem whichis"free,"excepttoCatholics, whosupportitagainsttheir consciencesbypayingdoubletaxation.ButtheArchbishopobviouslydoesnotacquiesceinthis stateofaffairs.Forhebelieves thatreligionshouldintegrateeducationandnowwantsStateaid fordenominationalsecondary schools.

Itisallveryconfusingsofar asAnglicanopinionandCatholic claimsareconcerned.Forthe past60yearsthecontrolofprimaryeducationhasbeeninthe handsoftheState.Butvarious religiousbodieshave,forconscientiousreasons,continuedtomaintainprimaryschoolsentirelyout oftheirownresources.Inthe forefronthasbeentheCatholic minority,whichovertheperiod hasspentwellover£50,000,000, whilecontinuingtopayinfullthe taxes,portionofwhichisearmarkedtosupportthesecularsystemofeducation.

Surelythiswasanunworthy,dogin-the-mangeratitude!

ButSydneywasnotanisolated instance.ItsexamplewasdutifullyfollowedbytheAnglican HierarchyofVictoria, whichdeclareditwouldbeinatthekill! IftheCatholicclaimsucceeded, theywouldfileasimilarclaim. Butnonethelessitopposedthe Catholicclaim!

TheoutlookoftheAnglicansin thisStatewasbyahair'sbreadth lessconfused.Theyapproved churchschoolsinprincipleandin practice,butcomplainedthatthe Catholicminorityofone-fifth showednodesiretohelptheremainingfour-fifths.Archbishop LeFanuactuallyexpectedthetail towagthedog!ThedicouragingthingisthatthePrimatehas notacquaintedhimselfwiththe vitalinformationthatCatholics wereclaimingonbehalfofALL privatereligiousschools,mantainedonconscientiousgrounds.So theystoodidlybywhilepublic apathyandsecularismflourished overus.
