Thefirstpost-warmeetingofthe InternationalCongressofChristianTradeUnionstookplacein Amsterdamrecently,whennearly 250delegatesassembledunderthe chairmanshipoftheBelgian,M. Pauwels.Austria,Belgium,France, Luxembourg,theNetherlands,Poland,SpainandSwitzerlandwere represented;Austriabyadelegateattendinginhisindividualcapacity,becausethereareatpresentnoChristiantradeunionsin Austria,Polandbyanexile,M. Boryssowivz,whowasgivena rousingreceptionandwho,representingthePolishChristianTrade
UnioninLondon,describedthe plightofPolishlabourunderthe presenttotalitarianregime,and SpainbyaBasqueexile.The chiefamongmanyresolutions passeddeclaredthattherightto organisetradeunionsshouldbe consideredasoneofthefundamentalfreedoms: "Compulsoryunifiedlabour unions,wherevertheyhavemade theirappearance,havealwaysled tointolerablecoercion.The continuallygrowingintervention oftheState,notonlyasapoliticalpowerbutalsoasemployer andmanager,makesitnecessary toensurethedefenceoftheworkersinandbyapluralistlabour unionmovement."
InnoneofthecountriesdominatedbytheSovietUnionarethere nowfreetradeunions.InCzechoslovakia,Hungary,Yugoslavia, LithuaniaandPolandtherewere flourishingChristianunionsbefore thewarwhichnownolongerexist,andtheaimoftheCommunistsistobringallworkingmen intoonegreatcompulsoryorganisation,throughwhichnotonly theirpoliticsinthenarrowersense buttheiraridphilosophycanbe instilled.Morethan1,300,000 workingmenarecompulsorily membersofsuchanorganisation inPoland,wherenoCatholicworklitng-men'sorganisation,however unpolitical,ispermitted.

TheHolyFather'spronounce. mentonnationalisationcomesas avaluableleadonasubjectthat isvexingmostofthecountriesof Europe.Hisletterisananswer toarequestfromtheFrenchorganisersoftheSocialWeekstobe heldinStrasbourg,whowanted authoritativeguidanceonasubjectofsuchconsuminggeneralinterest.Ithasbeenreadwithno lessinterestinEngland,wherethe argumentsonthesubjectarebecomingfiercerasthepresentSocialistGovernmentcontinueswith itsschemeofbringingallpublic utilitiesundernationalcontrol.
HisHolinesssays:"TheChurch isthemodelofallsociallife,for shehassavedthetruevalueof humanpassionsfromthedegradatinintowhichithadbeenthrown byphilosophiesandpaganusages; andthisshedidfromthemoment sherecognisedanddefendedinthe humanperson,therootandend ofeverysociallife.
"Youcanneveremphasisethese truthsenough,theymustbethe foundationofthebuildingofthe socialbodyatamomentwhen certainsystemsofgovernmentgo asfarastodemandtotalitarianismineverysector,withnoother idealthancollectiveegoism,and withoutanyotherexpressionthan thatofanall-powerfulState, whichusestheindividual-like piecesinagameofdraughts.

ThisreportexposesthefalsehoodfromWarsaw,publishedin thedailypressrecently,accusing CardinalHlondandthePolish BishopsofcomplicityintheantisemiticpogromatKielce.
inastatementtotheforeign press,theCardinalsaidthatthe disturbanceshadfilledhimwith sadness.Hethenreadadeclarationdefiningtheattitudeofthe Churchtowardsanti-Semitismand answeringthereproachesdirected attheChurchinPolandbyGov ernmentcircles.

FatherBuist,outliningthecurrentconceptsregardingGod,said thatfewpeopledeniedHisexistence,but,whatwasfarworse, theyimaginedHimasakindly oldgentleman.Chestertonhad summedupcontemporarythought whenhewrotethatGodwasregardedasabenevolentgrandfatherwhowaskeptinaback roomofthehouse,andoccasionallyvisitedsimplybecausethat wasdone.

Duringthewar,however,God nadbeengivenanopportunityof joiningthewinningsidewhenan invitationwasextendedtoHim onthenationaldaysofprayer. WheredidCatholicsstandinthis fearfulstateofaffairs?
FatherBuistgavethreedefinitionsofGod,andemphasisedthat studentsshouldnotonlypaylip servicetobeliefinGod,butthat theyshouldformapositivepietireoftheSupremeBeing.Itis essentialtoknowsomethingofthe natureofGod.FatherBuistleft forthediscussiongroupsase,-:es ofquestionssuggestedbyhisleetuieItwouldbesellforthe studenttoconsidertherelationshipbetweenhissubjectsandGod. Wouldyouconsiderthatinthe realmsofArt,earthlybeautywas theimageofGod'sbeauty;biology,anatomy,etc.,evidenceof GodWhoistheAuthorofLife: science,theworkofasupremearchitect?AgreeingthatinvestigationsolidifiedtheFaith,students consideredthatthebestwayto

Dr.Sullivangavethenextlecture,inwhichhetracedthephilosophiesoflifeinAustralia.He firstpointedoutthatitwasnecessarytoshowthataphilosophy hadpracticaleffectsoneveryday life,andadvancedasanexample 19th.centuryEngland,where,he considered,theprevalentideas hadshapedthestructureofindustrialsociety.Then,theDoctor asked,whatcouldberegardedas theoriginsofphilosophyinAustralia.Everyonelookingsufficientlyblank,heansweredhisown questionbyaddingthat19th.centuryLiberalismwastheobvious reply.
Heaskedhisaudiencetoconsiderthemodificationsthisphilosophyhadundergoneinthe20th. century,andtomakesomesurveyofthefieldofto-day.When weappreciatedthepresentposition,hecontinued,wecouldpass tothemostimportantpointin thisfield.Bearinginmindthat philosophycananddoesalterthe wayofliving,whatrolehasbeen played,andislikelytobeplayed, byCatholicphilosophyinAustralia?
Dr.Sullivanpresentedother questionsforgeneraldiscussion. DidtheaverageCatholicthinkhe couldhaveadividedallegiancein theapproachtolife?Couldhe heaCatholiconSundayandanythingyoulikefortherestofthe week?
Theundergraduateswerealmostunanimousinagreeingthat Catholicthoughtwasnotplaying thepartitshouldinthenation's life.TherewasamarkeddifferencebetweenthelaityinEngland andhere,Australiapresentinga ratherbedraggledappearancein theLightofFaith.TheintellectuallifeofthenationwasstarvingforCatholicprinciples,andyet
graduateswereshowingamarked reluctancetodoanythingabout it. Newman'sChaplain,FatherMurphy,wenttotheheartofthetroublewhen,inthenextlecturehe asked:"Whatareyourreasonsfor theinactivityofCatholicgradu. atesinCatholiclife?"Itwas suggestedthat.graduateswereno moreapatheticthananyoneelse, andthenmorepositiveapproaches totheproblemwereworkedout. Itwasfeltthatsomegraduates hadspecialdifficulties,suchas doctorsoverabortion,andlawyers andthedivorcecourts,butthis didnotexplainthegeneralattitude.
plewasgiventoillustratethedifferencebetweenoffensiveanddefensiveCatholicism.Astudent inalaboratoryheardhisfriends tellingallthecornyonesabout evolution.Creationhadbeendisproved.Theyallknewhewas aCatholic,soheputdownnis workandjoinedtheparty.DefensiveCatholicismwasdefinedas waitingtillactuallyquestioned, offensiveCatholicismasjoining thefun.
Regardingmorevigorousas pectsofCatholiclife,suchasa speakerontheEsplanaaeonSundayafternoon,membersgenerally werefavourabletotheidea.The onlyobjectionraisedwasthatit mighttendtolowerthedignity oftheFaith.However,ex-servicemenwhohadseenCatholic speakersinLondon'sHydePark wereenthusiasticaboutthesuggestion,andpointedoutthatit reachedasectionofthepeople thatthePressandRadiodidnot influence.
Graduatescouldbeespecially activeintwospheres,asworkers insocietiesliketheSt.Vincentde Paul,wheretheycouldpresent theclasslesssocietyoftheChurch toaclassconsciousworld,andon theacademicsideoflife.where somepeoplewerefoolishenough toattempttodiscredittheChurch. AnorganisationofeducatedCatholicstoexplodepopularmyths wasurgentlyneeded.Questions wereaskedconcerningtheactivitiesoftheChestertonCluborthe formationofasocietytodefend theintellectualapproachestothe Faith.Sometypeoforganisation onthisplanewasnecessary.Duringthewar,Newmanhadbecome anundergraduatesociety,andthe possibilitiesofre-establishingit asacombinedgraduatesandundergraduates'unionwasdiscussed. Opinionwasfairlydividedbetweenhavingabigsocietyatthe University,oraclubalongthe Chestertonlinesinthecity.One advantageofthelatterwasthat itsrankswereopentoanyCatholic,andNewmaniteswantedto squashtheideathattheywere attemptingtobeexclusive.Memberaftermemberexpressedthe desirethatundergraduatesshould guardagainstanyhintofintellectualsnobbery.Thatqualitywas anunwantedguest.

IfafulltimeChaplaincouldbeappointed,itwasfeltthataverydefinite advancewouldbemadeincounteractingtheprevailingpagan ideologies.Whenthediscussion movedontotheformationofaCatholiccollege,oneofthemostrevolutionaryideasoftheconferencewasadvanced.Mainly throughtheeffortsoftheViceChancellor,Dr.A.C.Currie,the Universityhasahostelthisyear. Catholicundergraduateswanted toknowwhyahostelratherthan anexpensivecollegecouldnotbe erectedforstudents.Catholic parentspaidfortheirchildren's educationfromthedaytheywent toschool,andeveryeffortshould bemadetolightenthisburden. Manycountrystudentscould notgoontotheUniversitybecauseofthecostofboardingout inthecityorgoingtoacollege. Americanuniversitieshadpaved thewayforcheaperaccommodationforstudents,andaCatholic hostelwouldgivemanystudents achanceoflearninginaCatholic atmosphere.Lateron,ifitwas thoughtdesirabletobuildacollegewellandgood,butintheurgencyofthepresentitwasfelt thatsomethingshouldbedone quicklytogiveCatholicstudents thebenefitofthescholastictraditionoftheChurch.
Thethemeofthewholeconference,aboutwhichthelecturesof thevisitingpriestsrevolved,was thattheonlyroadtoCatholicculturewasthroughpersonalsanctification.Thatwasthecause,the resteffect.
Onegraduateandtwenty-three undergraduatesattendedtheconference,whichlastedfromTuesdayafternoontoFridayatnoon. Thelectureswereheldinthe mornings,theafternoonswere free,andthediscussionstook placeintheevenings.ThecommitteeandmembersofNewman wishtothanktheirChaplain,and thevisitingpriests,fortheirgeneroussacrificeoftimeandenergy.

TheRectorofSt.Charles' MinorSeminary,VeryRev.Dr. Goody,threwintostarkreliefthe differencebetween20th.century viewsandtheancientconception oftheChurchontheidealofa Universty.Definingastudent assomeonewhoappreciated Truth,andwasabletoclearlyexpresshisideas,Dr.Goodystated thatallhighereducationmustbe rootedinleisure.Crammingpeoplethroughexams.wasaparody onlearning.Ittakestimeto think.AttheSeminaryample timewasgiventothestudentsto studytheirsubjects.Unfortunately,non-Catholicuniversities underthetirelesspressureofthe timeswerecondensingtheircourses,andsadlyeffectingthestandardsofscholarship.
Dr.Goodyaskedstudentsfor theirviewsonacommonfirst Yearinwhichtheelementsofclassicalthoughtwouldbetaught.He failedtoseehowpeoplecouldcall themselveseducatedwithoutthis background.Sciencestudents withfiveandsixyears'swotahead ofthemprotestedvigorously, maintainingthateventhattime wasveryshortformasteringthe involvedtechnicologyoftheir science.Artsandscienceundergraduatesimmediatelydivided, theargumentendingwhensomeoneremarked:"Wecaninvent theatomicbomballright.But who'sgoingtotelluswhywe shouldn'tdropitiftherearen't anyphilosophers?"
Dr.Goodywentontospeakon theliturgicallifeoftheChurch, andofthesignificanceandmeaningofmanyofthepriest'sactsat Mass.Hehopedhewouldn't proveboring,andfinishedupen-

AcaseinpointoccurredinthisStaterecentlyinthe matterofthedesireofthepeopleofBruceRocktotake cveraStatehotelandrunitasacommunityhotel.Up tothemomenttheGovernmenthasbeenunsympathetictowardstheproposal.Now,itisnotnecessarytoknowthe uctailsofthisoranyothercase.Theremaybeinstances wheretheGovernmenthasvalidimpedingreasonsagainst suchmeasures.Butbyandlargeandinbroadgeneral principletheGovernmenthasn'talegtostandon.Ithas norighttobeinthehotelbusinessatall,anymorethan ithasarightdirectlytooperatethefishingindustryorthe distributionoffarmproducts.Allsuchinterferencesis bywayofbeingplaintyrannyandcallsforimmediateand resoluteopposition.Forasthesetendenciesgrow,so doestheappetiteforpoweramongpoliticians.Anditis manifestthatgreaterStatecontrolisinevitablyboundup iththecreationandmaintenanceofahugearmyofofficials-inaword,withasoul-destroyingbureaucracy. Whateveronemaybelieveaboutthepoliticaloutlookof Mr.WinstonChurchill,thereisnodenyingthefundamentalwisdomofhisdictuminthismatter:"Wemustbeware oftryingtobuildasocietyinwhichnobodycountsfor anythingexceptapoliticianoranofficial."
whiletheStatemaynationalise suchpropertyitshouldalwaysdo so.ThesystemofmixedOwnership,withStatenomineesonthe BoardofDirectors,andtheholdingbytheStateofsomeshareof thecapital,wastobepreferredto whole-hogStateownership.Most desirableofall,accordingtoCatholicsocialtheory,wasthesystemofco-operativeandcorporativeorganisation.
"Weneednoscruple,"headded,"inopposingprivatemonopoly inessentialindustriesand services.Quitethecontrary.Monopolycapitalism,withitsrestrictivepracticesandunscionable profits,hasnoinviolablerightto lifefromthemoral.law.But ratherthanStatemonopolywe
shouldprefertoseewidelydiffusedprivateownershiponacooperativeandvocationalbasis."

MERITORIOUSPERFORMANCE
Thi.studentsofSt.Mary's ChristianBrothers'College,Leederville,onTuesdayevening,August21,presentedtheirannualconcertatthePerthTownHall.A capacityhousewaspresent,and thegeneralenthusiasmprevailing duringtheeveningwasasureindicationthatthemeritorousefforts oftheyoungperformerswere greatlyappreciated.Formypart, 1enjoyedtheconcertimmensely. .Alltheitemsonthevariedbillof farewerewellselected,andthe faultlessfashioninwhichthemajoritywerepresentedreflected greatcreditonallconcerned.

Mostpeoplethinkofwaltzes, particularlytheimmortalonesof JohannStrauss,wheneverthey hearthewordVienna.Oddly enough,theyseemtooverlook thefact,orarenotgenerally awareofit,thatmanyofthe greatestmusicalgeniusesofall timelivedandcomposedinthis greatcity.Therereadilycomes tomindsuchnamesasHaydn, Mozart,Beethoven,Schubert, Brahms,andtht,Strausses.These nameswillneverdieincircles whereallthatisbestinmusicis discussedandplayed.Surely, itisnotbywaltzesalonethat Viennashouldliveinourhearts, butbyeverybeautifulcompositionitsgreatsonshavebequeathedtothecivilisedworld.

ThelawofKarma,theyhold,is arigidlymechanicalsystemof justicewithoutmercy.According totheTheosophicalsystem,there isnosuchattribute -mercyin God,noristhereanysuchthing asrepentancewinningforgiveness.
Ifyouhavedonewrong,itisuselesstoregretit.Youmustset aboutcancellingitseffectsby practisingthecontraryvirtuesto anequaldegree,andthenthepositivewillcancelthenegative.
(4)Theyclaimforthissystem thatitisamoreorlessperfect solutionoftheproblemofevil.If, theyargue,Godwereapersonal being,lovingusasafather,and desirousofconferringhappiness onusandofexercisingmercy, 'howcouldtherebesuchanunequaldistributionoffavoursand disfavours-somuchenlightenment forsome,andsomuchignorance forothers,somebeingborninthe mostfortunatecircumstances,and othersinthemostunfortunate circumstances,andthisinmany caseswithoutanyfaultoftheir own?Whenonceweacceptthe inexorablesystemofKarma, everything,theysay,becomes clear.Thegood,andevilinthe worldisnottheoutcomeofa fatherlyprovidence,buttheinexorableresultofpreviouscyclesof lives,and,therefore,theproduct ofman'sownactions.

Althoughthisdoctrinedoes awaywithallourmostcomfortingideasregardingGodandHis mercy,thereisnodoubtthat,if true,andifrealised,theinexorablenessofrewardandpunishment attachedtoactswouldhavea strongstimulatingeffectonthe humanmind.Butthisinfluenceis allcancelledbythefactthatthe consciousnessofeachlifestands distinctfrontallotherlivesbefore andafter.Toputitconcretely-I amsupposednowtobesuffering formysinsinapreviouslife.But, then,thatpreviouslifeisablank tome,andso,inpracticaleffect, Iambeingpunishedforthefaults ofsomeonewho,thoughreally identicalinsubstancewithmyself, isjustasobjectivetomeasJulius Caesar.Andasforthefuture,as soonasthisonelifeisover,anotherlifewillbegin,whichwillbe justasobjective,sothatI(the presentego)willneverfeelthe punishmentswhichwillbemeted outtothatfuturelife.Inthisway eachindividualsuffersforthesins ofapreviousindividual,andbrings punishmentonathirdfutureindividual,allthreestandingquite distinctinconsciousness,onefront theother.Hence,asPeter,my predecessor,neverfeelsthepunishmentforhissins,soneither shallI(James)everfeelthepunishmentformysins.Theywillall bebornebyJohn,mysuccessor, justasthoseofPeterarenow bornebyme.Why,then,shouldI nottakemyfling,andgetthe mostpleasureIcanoutofmypresentopportunity,knowingthatI shallneverfeeltheconsequences?
Thisobjectionissoobvious,and sofataltothedoctrineofKarma, thatonewondershowanyman withaparticleofsensecancontinuetoregarditeitherasa solutionoftheproblemofevil,or asamoralincentivetovirtue.
