IntolerantPressure inU.S.A.

TheInternationalCongressof ChristianTradeUnionsrepresentamajorityoforganisedlabour intheNetherlands,morethan40 percent.inBelgium,andsubstantialminoritiesinFrance,Switzerland,andLuxembourg.InFrance the"ConfederationGeneraledes TravailleursChretiens"hasnow morethanamillionmembers, whereasupto1935ithadless thanaquarterofamillion.Italian,GermanandAustrianrepresentation,withthoseoftheCatholiccountriesatpresentdominatedbytheSovietUnion,would bringthetotalofthoserepresentedbytheChristianInternational tosomefiveorsixmililons,as comparedwiththethreemillions representedatitsfoundationin 1920.

Thefirstpost-warmeetingofthe InternationalCongressofChristianTradeUnionstookplacein Amsterdamrecently,whennearly 250delegatesassembledunderthe chairmanshipoftheBelgian,M. Pauwels.Austria,Belgium,France, Luxembourg,theNetherlands,Poland,SpainandSwitzerlandwere represented;Austriabyadelegateattendinginhisindividualcapacity,becausethereareatpresentnoChristiantradeunionsin Austria,Polandbyanexile,M. Boryssowivz,whowasgivena rousingreceptionandwho,representingthePolishChristianTrade

UnioninLondon,describedthe plightofPolishlabourunderthe presenttotalitarianregime,and SpainbyaBasqueexile.The chiefamongmanyresolutions passeddeclaredthattherightto organisetradeunionsshouldbe consideredasoneofthefundamentalfreedoms: "Compulsoryunifiedlabour unions,wherevertheyhavemade theirappearance,havealwaysled tointolerablecoercion.The continuallygrowingintervention oftheState,notonlyasapoliticalpowerbutalsoasemployer andmanager,makesitnecessary toensurethedefenceoftheworkersinandbyapluralistlabour unionmovement."

InnoneofthecountriesdominatedbytheSovietUnionarethere nowfreetradeunions.InCzechoslovakia,Hungary,Yugoslavia, LithuaniaandPolandtherewere flourishingChristianunionsbefore thewarwhichnownolongerexist,andtheaimoftheCommunistsistobringallworkingmen intoonegreatcompulsoryorganisation,throughwhichnotonly theirpoliticsinthenarrowersense buttheiraridphilosophycanbe instilled.Morethan1,300,000 workingmenarecompulsorily membersofsuchanorganisation inPoland,wherenoCatholicworklitng-men'sorganisation,however unpolitical,ispermitted.

PopeonRisksof Nationalisation

TheHolyFather'spronounce. mentonnationalisationcomesas avaluableleadonasubjectthat isvexingmostofthecountriesof Europe.Hisletterisananswer toarequestfromtheFrenchorganisersoftheSocialWeekstobe heldinStrasbourg,whowanted authoritativeguidanceonasubjectofsuchconsuminggeneralinterest.Ithasbeenreadwithno lessinterestinEngland,wherethe argumentsonthesubjectarebecomingfiercerasthepresentSocialistGovernmentcontinueswith itsschemeofbringingallpublic utilitiesundernationalcontrol.

HisHolinesssays:"TheChurch isthemodelofallsociallife,for shehassavedthetruevalueof humanpassionsfromthedegradatinintowhichithadbeenthrown byphilosophiesandpaganusages; andthisshedidfromthemoment sherecognisedanddefendedinthe humanperson,therootandend ofeverysociallife.

"Youcanneveremphasisethese truthsenough,theymustbethe foundationofthebuildingofthe socialbodyatamomentwhen certainsystemsofgovernmentgo asfarastodemandtotalitarianismineverysector,withnoother idealthancollectiveegoism,and withoutanyotherexpressionthan thatofanall-powerfulState, whichusestheindividual-like piecesinagameofdraughts.

"Aspiritofcommonlife,regulatedbygoodlaws,mustthereforeformthemembersofthatnationalcommunityinthesameway

asonthenaturalplaneitforms themembersofthefamily.

"Onlyundertheseconditions cantheprinciplesofliberty,equalityandfraternityprosper.This observationappliestotheparticularcasewhichinterestsyouat thismoment,namely,nationalisationofindustry.

"Ourpredecessorsandweourselveshaveoccupiedourselves severaltimesaboutthemoralaspectofthismeasure.

"Itisevidentthatinsteadofattenuatingthemechanicalcharacterofthelifeandworkincommon,nationalisationevenwhenit islawfulrisksaccentuatingit,and

SpeakingatFordhamUniversity,theCardinaldismissedas "baseless"theargumentsofProtestantgroups,whopretendtosee aviolationoftheprincipleof separationofChurchandState, andchargethatdipl'..TraticrelationsbetweentheAinclicanGavernmentandtheVaticanareunauthorisedorunconstitutional.

"Ibelieveinandpractisetolerance,"theCardinalsaid."formy religionteachesmetoopposeeven hatredwithcharity.Rutwhen reunionsoflargegroupsofreligiousleaders,withthepretextof representing30or40millionAmericans,sowseedsofdissension anddisunion,Ifeelitmydutyas anAmericanandaCatholicto helpdefendournationagainst suchmisrepresentations."

"Onlytheabsenceofgoodwill," theCardinaladded,"canmisrepresenthispresencethereorcharge

hencetheprofitwhichitbrings tothebenefitofthecommunity is,asyouknow,verysuspect.

"Weholdthattheinstitution ofassociationsandofco-operative entitiesineverybranchofnationaleconomywillbemuchmore advantageoustotheirproposed aims,andmuchmoreadvantageoustotheoutputoftheseindustries.

"Althoughtheconcentrationof factoriesandthedisappearanceof thesmallindependentproducers favourcapitalratherthansocial economy,thereisnodoubtthat intheactualcircumstancestheco operativeformulaofeconomiclife isinaccordancewiththeChristian doctrineregardingtheperson,the community,labourandprivate property."

Referringtotheadmissionofa spokesmanfortheministerial group,thatPresidentTrumanconsideredMr.Taylor'sappointment acontributiontopeace,whilethe samespokesman"hopefullyanticipatestheterminationofMr.

Taylor'smission,"CardinalSpellmansaid:

"SurelytheseministersofGod knowthatevenwiththesigningof peacetreatiespeacewillbedifficulttoattainyettheywishwithdrawnfromhismissionamanwho bythestatementsoftwoPresi dents,helpedbringsomemeasure ofpeacetothiswar-riddenworld.

"Iknowthesemenattempted tobolstertheirintolerantattitude andactsbyattempting,andin somecasessucceeding,ininciting otherstojointhem.ButIknow, too,fromthelipsofrealandgreat ProtestantandJewishleadersof theirindignantrefusalsandtheir honestabhorrenceofsuchunAmericantactics."

CardinalCondemns JewishPogrominPoland

TheriotsinKielce,Poland, wheremorethan30Jewswere killed,havebeencondemnedby CardinalHlond,PrimateofPo land. Butfarfromwelcomingthe clergy'seffortstorestoreorder. thecivicauthoritieshaveobstructedtheirattemptstodosoadds HisEminence.

ThisreportexposesthefalsehoodfromWarsaw,publishedin thedailypressrecently,accusing CardinalHlondandthePolish BishopsofcomplicityintheantisemiticpogromatKielce.

inastatementtotheforeign press,theCardinalsaidthatthe disturbanceshadfilledhimwith sadness.Hethenreadadeclarationdefiningtheattitudeofthe Churchtowardsanti-Semitismand answeringthereproachesdirected attheChurchinPolandbyGov ernmentcircles.

Thepriest,whowenttothe sceneoftheincident,saysthe Cardinal'sdeclaration,wasarrestedbyarmedmenandcompelled toreturn.Aftertroopshad thrownacordonroundtheplace, fivepriestswenttocounselthe isolatedgroupsstillonthespot todisperse.

Thenextdaythelocalreligious authoritiesissuedanappealfor calm,butpublicationofthiswas withheldbythecivicauthorities

'Asecondsimilarappealwas readontheSundayinallthe churchesofKielce.

Thefactthatgoodrelationsarc nowbeginningtobebroken,said HisEminence,isdue,ingreat part,toJewsoccupyinghigh placesintheGovernmentandnationallifewhoareimposingonthe Stateastructurecontrarytothe desiresofthevastmajorityofthe population.Theresultisadangeroustension.

SomeJewsbutafargreater numberofPoles,havelosttheir

livesintheclashofpblitical groups.

ThePrimateaddedthathehad personallyprotectedJewswhile hewasinFranceduringtheGermanoccupation.HebeggedCatholicstopreservecompletecalm andtoactwithallprudence.

Mgr.Kubina,BishopofCzestochowa,whoalsocondemnedthe rioting,wrote:

"Absolutelynothingcanjustify thiscrimeinKielce,thebackgroundandreasonofwhichisto befoundincriminalfanaticism andinexplicableignorance.The moralandactualcommittersof thismurderhavetrampledonthe dignityofmanandviolatedina terriblewaytheChristiancommandmentofneighbourlylove,of theprinciple,"Thoushaltnotkill." tookplaceinKielcelastautumn_ TheBishopofKielce,Mgr.Kaczmarek.declaredatthattimetoa Jewishdelegationthathehad prayedduringthewarforthepersecutedJews,thathehadordered theprieststopreachsermons abouttoleranceandcondemnall symptomsofhatred,socontrary toChristianethics.

TheCardinalalsosaidthatwhen HisHolinessspokeabouttheattacksonBritainwhicharebeing madebyacertaincountry,which haddirectedsimilarattacksat theHolySee,"Ineachother's company,"theHolyFathersaid withasmile,"weareingoodcompany."

RUSSIANSFREETWOBISHOPS,SEIZEONE.

TheRussianauthoritieshave releasedfromprisontwoPolish Bishops.Theyhaveatthesame timearrestedtheonlyBishopof theByzantine-SlavonicriteinSovietterritory,whouptonowhas enjoyedalimitedmeasureoffreedom.

ThereleasedBishopsareMgr. Kocylowski,oftheRutheniandioceseofLuck.ThearrestedBishopisMgr.Rhamza,ofMunkacs, adioceseinEasternCzecho-SlovakterritorytakenoverbyRussia.

BishopKocylowskiwasarrested whenPolandwaspartitioned.His diocesewassplitbythenewboundaryline.InspiteofpersecutiontheBishoprefusedtosigna statementthathewould,asa Ukranian,govoluntarilytoRussia.

JustastheoldBelsenwasa symbolofNazimentality,tothe newBelsentypifiesthemiserable plightofEurope'sdisplacedmillions,forthebrutalfactisthat80 percent.ofthedisplacedheredo notwanttogohome.

Thereareavarietyofreasons fromraceandclasstoreligion.

Frommydiscussionswiththe peoplethemselvesandthe UNRRAcampofficials,Idrew theconclusionthatmanyPolish Catholicsareafraidtoreturnto Polandbecausetheyfearthey wouldnotbeabletopractise theirreligioninaRussian-dominatedcountry.

Manyothersareafraidforpoliticalreasons.Theyholdpolitica, viewsincompatiblewiththeWhetsofCommunism.

Thenthereisapercentagewho areusingreligionandpoliticsto cloaktheiractualreasons.

Inthiscategoryfallthosewho findeconomicconditionsbetterin Belsenthantheyexperiencedat home.

Thereis,too,thetragedyof thosewhocannotgethome.

CardinalSpellmansaidthatAmericanrepresentationattheVaticanisnomoreagainsttheprincipleofseparationofChurchand StatethanAmericanrepresentationinEngland,wheretheKing headsChurchandState.

TakentotheRussianfrontier hewasarrestedbytheRussian secretpolice.Hehasnowbeen allowedtoreturntothepartof hisdioceseinPoland.Hehas founditalmostemptiedofRuthenianCatholics,whoarebeing forcedtogotoRussia.

BishopSzelazek,whosediocese isinterritoryannexedbythe U.S.S.R.,hasbeensenttoPoland. AllthePolishCatholicsinthe Luckdiocesehavebeendeported toSiberia.

BishopRhomzawasAuxiliary toBishopDudasoftheHtingariandioceseofHajdudorogwhen easternCzechoslovakiawastaken byRtissia.TheHolySeethen appointedhimtotheMunkacs diocese.

BishopRhomzaisreportedto havebeendeportedtoanunknownregion.

Whatneedwefurtherwiththis manWeneedtogetpastthe ideathatDonaldMcLeodisafly bynightagitator.Onthecontrary,hehasbeenawell-sinking contractorintheNorth-Westfor years,andanemployerofnative labour.Hisattitudeissummed upinthelastsentence:"Itisour dutyasCommuniststorelieve thesepeoplefromtheiruphappy lot."Thisdoesblowthegaff properly.Itshowsasincerity alientoameretroublemaker.

ButIdonotdefendDonald McLeodoreventhestrike.The strikeisimportant,becauseina flashitwasshownwhatawretchedbargainingpositionthecolouredworkerswereinandtheconditionswhichwereconsidered suitableforthem.

Furthermore,infaceofpublic denialbycommitteemembersand thefactthatfiftydifferentorganisationshavesignalledtheirsupport,theassertionthatitisjust aCommunistsubsidiaryiswild. Sofarthecommitteeinaction hasfollowedtheobjectiveslaid down,briefinganablelawyerto defendthearrestednativesand MeLeod,whileatthesametime enlistingpublicsupportwhichis necessaryinanylegalreform.

Thisisnotfutilelitigation,but oneofthemostidealisticactions undertakeninthisStatebyprivatecitizensandonewhichhas harvestedacropofsignificantinteresteverywhere.

Thisletterstandsontwogrounds. Firstly,condemnationofakind ofcriticism.Imeantheattitude ofmindofapersonwho,seeing amansavedfromdrowningbya Communist,wouldpophimback intotheriveragainandthendebatetherescue.Inthislittle sceneFrancisGilbertwalksoff withhishandsinhispockets whilethewretchsinksthethird time.

FatherBuist,outliningthecurrentconceptsregardingGod,said thatfewpeopledeniedHisexistence,but,whatwasfarworse, theyimaginedHimasakindly oldgentleman.Chestertonhad summedupcontemporarythought whenhewrotethatGodwasregardedasabenevolentgrandfatherwhowaskeptinaback roomofthehouse,andoccasionallyvisitedsimplybecausethat wasdone.

"Nopolitician,"continuedthe Redemptorist,"evermentioned God'snameoraskedHisaid."

Duringthewar,however,God nadbeengivenanopportunityof joiningthewinningsidewhenan invitationwasextendedtoHim onthenationaldaysofprayer. WheredidCatholicsstandinthis fearfulstateofaffairs?

FatherBuistgavethreedefinitionsofGod,andemphasisedthat studentsshouldnotonlypaylip servicetobeliefinGod,butthat theyshouldformapositivepietireoftheSupremeBeing.Itis essentialtoknowsomethingofthe natureofGod.FatherBuistleft forthediscussiongroupsase,-:es ofquestionssuggestedbyhisleetuieItwouldbesellforthe studenttoconsidertherelationshipbetweenhissubjectsandGod. Wouldyouconsiderthatinthe realmsofArt,earthlybeautywas theimageofGod'sbeauty;biology,anatomy,etc.,evidenceof GodWhoistheAuthorofLife: science,theworkofasupremearchitect?AgreeingthatinvestigationsolidifiedtheFaith,students consideredthatthebestwayto

proclaimbeliefinGodandthe DivinityofChristwasinreverencetowardsHisHolyName.

Dr.Sullivangavethenextlecture,inwhichhetracedthephilosophiesoflifeinAustralia.He firstpointedoutthatitwasnecessarytoshowthataphilosophy hadpracticaleffectsoneveryday life,andadvancedasanexample 19th.centuryEngland,where,he considered,theprevalentideas hadshapedthestructureofindustrialsociety.Then,theDoctor asked,whatcouldberegardedas theoriginsofphilosophyinAustralia.Everyonelookingsufficientlyblank,heansweredhisown questionbyaddingthat19th.centuryLiberalismwastheobvious reply.

Heaskedhisaudiencetoconsiderthemodificationsthisphilosophyhadundergoneinthe20th. century,andtomakesomesurveyofthefieldofto-day.When weappreciatedthepresentposition,hecontinued,wecouldpass tothemostimportantpointin thisfield.Bearinginmindthat philosophycananddoesalterthe wayofliving,whatrolehasbeen played,andislikelytobeplayed, byCatholicphilosophyinAustralia?

Dr.Sullivanpresentedother questionsforgeneraldiscussion. DidtheaverageCatholicthinkhe couldhaveadividedallegiancein theapproachtolife?Couldhe heaCatholiconSundayandanythingyoulikefortherestofthe week?

Theundergraduateswerealmostunanimousinagreeingthat Catholicthoughtwasnotplaying thepartitshouldinthenation's life.TherewasamarkeddifferencebetweenthelaityinEngland andhere,Australiapresentinga ratherbedraggledappearancein theLightofFaith.TheintellectuallifeofthenationwasstarvingforCatholicprinciples,andyet

graduateswereshowingamarked reluctancetodoanythingabout it. Newman'sChaplain,FatherMurphy,wenttotheheartofthetroublewhen,inthenextlecturehe asked:"Whatareyourreasonsfor theinactivityofCatholicgradu. atesinCatholiclife?"Itwas suggestedthat.graduateswereno moreapatheticthananyoneelse, andthenmorepositiveapproaches totheproblemwereworkedout. Itwasfeltthatsomegraduates hadspecialdifficulties,suchas doctorsoverabortion,andlawyers andthedivorcecourts,butthis didnotexplainthegeneralattitude.

plewasgiventoillustratethedifferencebetweenoffensiveanddefensiveCatholicism.Astudent inalaboratoryheardhisfriends tellingallthecornyonesabout evolution.Creationhadbeendisproved.Theyallknewhewas aCatholic,soheputdownnis workandjoinedtheparty.DefensiveCatholicismwasdefinedas waitingtillactuallyquestioned, offensiveCatholicismasjoining thefun.

Regardingmorevigorousas pectsofCatholiclife,suchasa speakerontheEsplanaaeonSundayafternoon,membersgenerally werefavourabletotheidea.The onlyobjectionraisedwasthatit mighttendtolowerthedignity oftheFaith.However,ex-servicemenwhohadseenCatholic speakersinLondon'sHydePark wereenthusiasticaboutthesuggestion,andpointedoutthatit reachedasectionofthepeople thatthePressandRadiodidnot influence.

Graduatescouldbeespecially activeintwospheres,asworkers insocietiesliketheSt.Vincentde Paul,wheretheycouldpresent theclasslesssocietyoftheChurch toaclassconsciousworld,andon theacademicsideoflife.where somepeoplewerefoolishenough toattempttodiscredittheChurch. AnorganisationofeducatedCatholicstoexplodepopularmyths wasurgentlyneeded.Questions wereaskedconcerningtheactivitiesoftheChestertonCluborthe formationofasocietytodefend theintellectualapproachestothe Faith.Sometypeoforganisation onthisplanewasnecessary.Duringthewar,Newmanhadbecome anundergraduatesociety,andthe possibilitiesofre-establishingit asacombinedgraduatesandundergraduates'unionwasdiscussed. Opinionwasfairlydividedbetweenhavingabigsocietyatthe University,oraclubalongthe Chestertonlinesinthecity.One advantageofthelatterwasthat itsrankswereopentoanyCatholic,andNewmaniteswantedto squashtheideathattheywere attemptingtobeexclusive.Memberaftermemberexpressedthe desirethatundergraduatesshould guardagainstanyhintofintellectualsnobbery.Thatqualitywas anunwantedguest.

Animmediateobjective,allthe undergraduatesfelt,wastheformationofaCatholiclibraryator neartheUniversity. IfafulltimeChaplaincouldbeappointed,itwasfeltthataverydefinite advancewouldbemadeincounteractingtheprevailingpagan ideologies.Whenthediscussion movedontotheformationofaCatholiccollege,oneofthemostrevolutionaryideasoftheconferencewasadvanced.Mainly throughtheeffortsoftheViceChancellor,Dr.A.C.Currie,the Universityhasahostelthisyear. Catholicundergraduateswanted toknowwhyahostelratherthan anexpensivecollegecouldnotbe erectedforstudents.Catholic parentspaidfortheirchildren's educationfromthedaytheywent toschool,andeveryeffortshould bemadetolightenthisburden. Manycountrystudentscould notgoontotheUniversitybecauseofthecostofboardingout inthecityorgoingtoacollege. Americanuniversitieshadpaved thewayforcheaperaccommodationforstudents,andaCatholic hostelwouldgivemanystudents achanceoflearninginaCatholic atmosphere.Lateron,ifitwas thoughtdesirabletobuildacollegewellandgood,butintheurgencyofthepresentitwasfelt thatsomethingshouldbedone quicklytogiveCatholicstudents thebenefitofthescholastictraditionoftheChurch.

Thethemeofthewholeconference,aboutwhichthelecturesof thevisitingpriestsrevolved,was thattheonlyroadtoCatholicculturewasthroughpersonalsanctification.Thatwasthecause,the resteffect.

Onegraduateandtwenty-three undergraduatesattendedtheconference,whichlastedfromTuesdayafternoontoFridayatnoon. Thelectureswereheldinthe mornings,theafternoonswere free,andthediscussionstook placeintheevenings.ThecommitteeandmembersofNewman wishtothanktheirChaplain,and thevisitingpriests,fortheirgeneroussacrificeoftimeandenergy.

TheBiblewasopenedappropriateyatthatpartofSt.Luke's GospelwhichtellstheChristmas story. Its90,000linesarewrittenin smallandornatehandwriting. Minuteexaminationhasnotrevealedasingleblot,erasureor mistakeinits900pages.Itis writtenonafinevellumorcalfskinofsilkentexture,anditis estimatedthatittookoneperson some40yearstocompletethe work.

Ithastobeadmittedthatsomeoftheevilsofcapital'sinwhicharisefromtheconcentrationofproductive wealthandpowerinthehandsofafewcanonlybebroken downbyStateintervention.Butthisisaverydifferent matterfromtheStateretainingthepowersithastaken fromindividuals.Eventopeoplewhodonotthinkmuch aboutsocialreconstructiontheprincipleofsubsidiaryfunction(togiveitaridiculouslypompoustitle)mustappeal asanaxiom.Itisclearlyagraveinjustice,andaninversionofrightorder,forahigherorganisationtoarrogate Coitselffunctionswhichcanbeefficientlycarriedoutbya smallerandlowerorganisation.Inpracticalpoliticsthis meansthattheFederalGovernmenthasnoconceivable businessinintrudingintoaffairswhichhavebeenorcanbe adequatelycarriedonbytheStateParliaments.These legislatures,similarly,havenojustificationfortrespassing 'issphereswherelocalauthorities,suchasRoadsBoards orco-operativesocieties,areabletomanageadequately, thesameprincipleapplieswithequalforceinthefieldof economics,forplainlypoliticallibertydivorcedfromeconimicfreedomisasnareandadelusion.

MERITORIOUSPERFORMANCE

Thi.studentsofSt.Mary's ChristianBrothers'College,Leederville,onTuesdayevening,August21,presentedtheirannualconcertatthePerthTownHall.A capacityhousewaspresent,and thegeneralenthusiasmprevailing duringtheeveningwasasureindicationthatthemeritorousefforts oftheyoungperformerswere greatlyappreciated.Formypart, 1enjoyedtheconcertimmensely. .Alltheitemsonthevariedbillof farewerewellselected,andthe faultlessfashioninwhichthemajoritywerepresentedreflected greatcreditonallconcerned.

Thechoralselectionswereofa comprehensivenature,rangingas theydidfromMozarttoNevin,by wayofMendelssohnandDvorak, andtheCollegeChoir,underthe batonofBrotherCollopy,not onlydemonstratedthefactthat theycouldsingwell,butalsothey enjoyedtheirwork.Thevocal solosofGrenvilleMurraywere mostimpressive,andanencore, Gounocl's"AveMaria"(recently unearthedbyGracieFields)was given.ConductedbyMrs.Harvey,theverse-speakingchoir gaveagoodaccountofthemselvesinseveralselections,where clearenunciationwascombined

witheffectivemodulation.Severaldances,arrangedbyMiss PeggyEsler,werebrightlypresentedincostume,andtheirintricatefootworkdidnotpresent anythingneartheproblemthat oneyoungtarhadwhenhiscap felloffintheSailors'Hornpipe,or thegrimstruggleaburlypoliceman(fullyfourfeetinheight) hadwhenhistrousers,'emulating thebarometerthesedays,kept steadilyfalling.Twobriefscenes fromShakespeare's"JuliusCaesar"and"TwelfthNight"wereinterestingdiversions,andtheyouthfulIrvingsactedwithassurance andadequategusto.Thepupils ofGradeIII.stormedtheheights withtheirdisplayof"Wands"exercises,andalthough,duetothe presenceofafewindividualistsin thesquad,norealNazi-likeprecisionwaswhollymaintained,it didnotgreatlymatter.After all,whowantstoberemindedof Nazis?

Mostpeoplethinkofwaltzes, particularlytheimmortalonesof JohannStrauss,wheneverthey hearthewordVienna.Oddly enough,theyseemtooverlook thefact,orarenotgenerally awareofit,thatmanyofthe greatestmusicalgeniusesofall timelivedandcomposedinthis greatcity.Therereadilycomes tomindsuchnamesasHaydn, Mozart,Beethoven,Schubert, Brahms,andtht,Strausses.These nameswillneverdieincircles whereallthatisbestinmusicis discussedandplayed.Surely, itisnotbywaltzesalonethat Viennashouldliveinourhearts, butbyeverybeautifulcompositionitsgreatsonshavebequeathedtothecivilisedworld.

OnSunday,August18,theAdult EducationBoardarrangedamost interestingmusicalprogramme underthealluringtitle,"ANightin Vienna,"andsought,withmuch successbeitnoted,totransport usinspirittoVienna-notthe grim,unhappycitywiththetightenedbeltrestinguneasilyinthe darkeningRussianshadowto-day, butthehappy,carefreeViennaof thelastcentury.Thecityof imposingbuildings,ofbeautiful churches,musicsalons,andthe widecobbledstreetswhereashy freckledSchubert,asereneand beardedBrahms,oranimpatient Beethovenmightjostlewiththe bustlingnoisycrowdsbeforeseekingsolaceorinspirationinthe nearbywoods,oraslowstroll throughthePrater.

Thesingerfortheeveningwas ValentineLewin(mezzo-soprano), andthiswasanappropriateselection,asthisartistehadbeenin Viennaformanyyears.Possessingafinevoice,butconsciousof itslimitations,thesingerpresentedtwovariedgroupsinaneffectivemanner.Herenunciation, assuranceandtechnicaladequgcY weremostsatisfying,butherdeportmentduringsomesongswas irritating,approximatingasit nearlydidthesinuousmotionsa pythonsufferingfromhiccups wouldmake.Inthefirstgroup theuttercharmofSchubert'sfamous"Lindenbaum"("TheLinden Tree"),withitsrealisticaccompanimentsuggestingtherustling oftheleavesandlaterthewind storm,waswelldemonstrated likewisethesongoftheyoung pageCherubino,"NonSoPiu," fromMozart's"MarriageofFigaro,"inwhichthelove-sickyouth expressestoSusannathecommotionofhiswholenatureandhis feverishunrest.Inthesecond grouptheartistewasaccorded anovationforhertreatmentof "WhoHasUnitedUs?"from"The GypsyBaron,"byStrauss.A corruptionofthissongisthewellknown"OneDayWhenWeWere Young."

InPerthwehavetwoYouth Movements,theYoungChristian Workers'Movementforyoung menandtheNationalCatholic Girls'Movementforgirls.Each weekthesemovementsaregrowingandexercisingawiderinfluence.Basedupontheleadership ofyoungandkeenmembers,who havebeentrainedtodevelopand spirituallyorientatealltheirnaturalqualitiesofleadership,they strivetoinspireandinfluence youthtoworkactivelyinanorganisedwaytobuildanAustralia inwhichayoungmanorayoung womancanbehappy,pure,honest,secureandfree.Inshort,they possesswhatnootherorganisation does,allthoseprinciplesofreligion,which,accordingtoGeorge Washington,contributemostto politicalprosperityandnational morality,andareitsindispensable support.

Ifyouhavedonewrong,itisuselesstoregretit.Youmustset aboutcancellingitseffectsby practisingthecontraryvirtuesto anequaldegree,andthenthepositivewillcancelthenegative.

Onthecontrary,theessentialthenpasseswiththesoultoanideaofpantheismisthattheuni-otherbody,andsoonadinfinitum, verse,andallthatisinit,isinthusleadingaseriesoflives.The somerealsenseapartofGod-consciousness,however,whichperthatistosay,itisakindofex-vadesonelifeisnotlinkedwith pansionorprojectionofthedi-theconsciousnesswhichpervades vinenature,whichseemsonthethenextlife;sothatwearenot surfacetobedistinct,butinun-awareofourpastexistenceswhen derlyingrealityisHimselfunderatheyareover,buthaveafresh certainconditionedform.Thisisstartofconsciousnessineachlife. thefirstfundamental.tenetofThecontinuityis,therefore,one Theosophy.Godisrepresentedasofessence,notofconsciousness; beinginHimselfarealityindeed,butthereisalsoacontinuityin forHeistheall.ButinHisownanotherway.BythelawofKarma intimateessenceHeisasortofeveryactionhasitsowninseparinfiniteunthinkability,withoutat-ableconsequences-goodactions tributes,orqualities,oranykindissuinginexorablyinanincrease ofdistinctness.Itwouldseemfromofwell-beingandevilactionsin thisthat,accordingtoTheosophy,anincreaseofill-being-sothat Godisreducedtoanabstractideaeachlifestartsbetterorworse, ofbeingingeneraldevoidof-11accordingtotheconductofthe

Althoughthisdoctrinedoes awaywithallourmostcomfortingideasregardingGodandHis mercy,thereisnodoubtthat,if true,andifrealised,theinexorablenessofrewardandpunishment attachedtoactswouldhavea strongstimulatingeffectonthe humanmind.Butthisinfluenceis allcancelledbythefactthatthe consciousnessofeachlifestands distinctfrontallotherlivesbefore andafter.Toputitconcretely-I amsupposednowtobesuffering formysinsinapreviouslife.But, then,thatpreviouslifeisablank tome,andso,inpracticaleffect, Iambeingpunishedforthefaults ofsomeonewho,thoughreally identicalinsubstancewithmyself, isjustasobjectivetomeasJulius Caesar.Andasforthefuture,as soonasthisonelifeisover,anotherlifewillbegin,whichwillbe justasobjective,sothatI(the presentego)willneverfeelthe punishmentswhichwillbemeted outtothatfuturelife.Inthisway eachindividualsuffersforthesins ofapreviousindividual,andbrings punishmentonathirdfutureindividual,allthreestandingquite distinctinconsciousness,onefront theother.Hence,asPeter,my predecessor,neverfeelsthepunishmentforhissins,soneither shallI(James)everfeelthepunishmentformysins.Theywillall bebornebyJohn,mysuccessor, justasthoseofPeterarenow bornebyme.Why,then,shouldI nottakemyfling,andgetthe mostpleasureIcanoutofmypresentopportunity,knowingthatI shallneverfeeltheconsequences?

Thisobjectionissoobvious,and sofataltothedoctrineofKarma, thatonewondershowanyman withaparticleofsensecancontinuetoregarditeitherasa solutionoftheproblemofevil,or asamoralincentivetovirtue.
