CHRISTCRITICISES OBSERVANCEOFMAN-MADE PRESCRIPTIONS
NowwhatpracticeoftheScribes andPhariseeswasOurLordreferringtohere,andwhatiniquity wasHecondemning?
Well,duringthecourseofages, therehadgrownuparoundthe LawofMosesthousandsofinterpretationsandinstructions,culledfromthe'writingormidrash offamousJewishRabbis,allof whichwerethepersonalinterpretationofthesemen,learnedinthe law:innowayinspiredbyGod. Thismassofdecisionsondebateablepointsandminutiaeofritual observancewasknownasthe MishnahandspokenofastheTraditionoftheAncients.OurLord givesanexamplehowoftenthese man-madeprescriptionsoftenran countertotheverylawofGod itself.Thus,accordingtothe Mishnah,ifamanhadmadea vowtopaysomemoney,asagift totheTemple,andthenfound thathisownparentshadneedof themoneyfortheirverysubsistence,themanwasboundtokeep hisvowandleavehisparentsin want.Dr.Edershiem,thewellknownJewishscholar,tellsus thatthisverycaseisdiscussedin theMishnah,andthedecisionwas, thatthecommandmentenjoining"honouroffatherormother" didnotconstituteagroundfor invalidatingsuchavow.
WellcanweunderstandOur Lord'sindignationatsuchhypocrisy.Nowordsarestrong enoughtocondemnsuchaninterpretationofreligionthatwould, allowamantoleavehisparents inwantinordertocarryouta Rabbinicalprescription.
IthinkwhatIhavesaidmakes itquiteclearwhatOurLord meantbyHiswords:"Youreject thecommandmentofGodthat youmaykeepyourtradition."
Butthereisnothingwhatever incommon,exceptthename,betweenthiskind.ofTraditionand theTraditionwespeakofinGod's HolyChurch.ThatTraditionis thelivingWordofGod,guaranteed from'allerrorbyChrist'spromise tobewithHisChurchuntilthe endoftime;OurLordpromised thatHewouldsendtheHoly SpirittoteachHisdisciplesall thingsandtoabidewiththem forever.
