AllMary'sFeastsareaglow withacelestialbeautywhichcaptivatestheChristiansoul,andinstilsintoitbothadistastefor earthlythingsandanardentlongingforthejoysofheaven.If thisstatementistrueofeveryfestivalofOurBlessedLady,itappliesinanespecialmannertothe FeastoftheAssumption,which theChurchcelebratesonAugust 15. Liketheever-flowingfountainofpurestwater,themystery oftheAssumptionisendowed withperennialfreshness,and,in thelightthatfallsuponitfrom thethroneoftheBlessedTrinity, itsexultantwaterssparklelike therainbowwithvariedcolours, thecontemplationofeachof whichinundatesoursoulwith boundlessdelight. Wemayconsiderthismystery inrelationtoOurSaviour,inrelationtoMary,inrelationtothe angels,orinrelationtoourselves, but,inwhatevermannerweview it,whetherasaglorioustriumph ofOurSaviour'sredeeminglove, asauniqueprerogativeofMary Immaculate,asthefestalday whereontheangelsenthroned theirQueen,asthecrowningperfectionofMary'sintercessory power,orastitpresageandearnestofourownassumption,wede. rivefromthatdelightfulmystery thesweetestjoy,andareinspired withdetachmentfromthefleetingpleasuresandephemeraljoys ofearth,andenkindledwitha yearningfortheunfadinggloryof theheavenlyJerusalem.

Itwaseminentlyfittingthat Maryshouldbeassumedbodily intoheaven.ThosewhoareenlightenedbyCatholicfaithintuitivelyperceivethefitnessof theAssumption.Whenwerealisethewisdomandomnipotence ofall-holyGodhead,whenwe graspthemeaningofthefathomlessmysteryoftheIncarnation, andwhenweseriouslyconsider thesublimeheighttowhichthe dignityoftheDivineMaternity hasraisedthesinlessMaidenof Nazareth, wecannotconceiveof GodactingotherwisethantransferringthelivingArkoftheCovenanttothegloryofheaven. Thosewhohavebutadimand hazynotionofGod'sattributes andofthemysteryoftheWord madeFlesh, nevergraspMary's placeintheplanofcreationand edemption, anditisonlywhen thebrightraysofCatholicfaith fallupontheircloudedmindand dissipateitsmists, thatthey awakentothebeautyoftheCatholicdoctrineregardingtheVirginMother.Andyetitishard toconceiveofanyChristianquestioningMary'sImmaculateConception, heruntarnishedvirginity, orhercorporealassumptioninto heaven.

Howcouldthatspotlessbody whencetheEternalSon-ofGod hadderivedHisveryfleshand blood,thatspotlessbodywherein Hehadreposed,thatspotless bodyfromwhosebreastHehad drawnHisverysustenance,how. Iask-andIappealtoeveryin-

stinctoftheChristian-couldthat sinlessbodybeallowedtosuffer thecorruptionofthegrave?

Ifitwasnecessarythatthe bodyofChristshouldriseagain toshinewiththegloryofeverlastingincorruption, surelyitwas fittingalsothatthebodyofHis ownVirginMothershouldreceive thesameprivilegebyvirtueof Hisabundantmerits?Ifitwas necessarythattheIncarnateWord shouldascendbodilyintoheaven thatHemightreignonGod's righthand, andcontinueHiswork asMediatorofRedemption, surely itwasfittingthatHisMotheralso shouldbeexaltedbodyandsoul toathroneontherighthandof HerDivineSon,thatshemight moreperfectlyfulfilherofficeas Mediatrixofintercessiononbehalfoffallenman. And,asthe burningloveofHisSacredHeart urgedOurLordtomeritthegrace thatallthejustshouldrisetriumphantlyonthelastdayas sharersofHisimperishableglory, itseemedbutnaturalthatHisunboundedloveforHissinless MothershouldimpelHimtomerit forhertheanticipationofthat privilege.Andthen, whenwerememberGod'sdazzlingholiness andHisunsearchablewisdom,it seemsincompatiblewiththose augustattributesthattheimmaculatesubstanceoftheMaiden MotherofGodshouldundergothe lawsofcorruption, whicharethe consequence, inapeculiarmanner,ofAdam'stransgression,in whichMaryhadnoshare.

ThedoctrineofthebodilyassumptionofthepurestofVirgins fitsinasabeautifulintegralpart inthesymmetricalsystemof God'srevealedreligion.And, sinceOurDivineRedeemer'slove forHisBlessedMotherwassoardentandintensethatitconstrain. edHimtolavishuponherevery gracethatwasfittinginherregard,fortheveryreasonthatthe Assumptionwasfitting,itbecame anaccomplishedfact,andistodaypreachedintriumphtohundredsofmillionsofferventChristians.

Maryhadtoobeythelawof death,fromwhichevenOurSaviourHimselfwasnotexempt.But herdeathwasratherapeaceful slumber,agentleseparationof thesoulfromthebody,duetothe forceofdivinelove.Herardent spirit,whichhadglowedwith everincreasingloveduringthefifteenyearswhichelapsedsinceshe stoodonthesummitoftheMount ofOlivesandbeheldherglorified Sonascendingonhigh,hadat lengthreachedsuchadegreeof charitythatitseemedunableto restanylongersaveinthebeatific loveoftheunveiledbeautyand goodnessoftheBlessedTrinity, andhenceitsweetlyspedtoenjoythebeatificvision,leavingthe immaculatebodyoftheholyVirginsilentandmotionless,though surpassinglybeautiful,inthesleep ofdeath.

Scarcethreedayshadpassed since,Marybreathedforthher puresoulintothehandsofher DivineSon,when,lo!thatfair souldescendedfromheaven,and inaninstantwasunitedtothe bodywhichlaypeacefullyreposinginthetomb,andsuddenlythe holyVirginstoodimmortaland impassible,deckedinqueenly glory,surroundedbymyriads ofcelestialspirits.And,asthe angelssangtheirhymnsofpraise, theMotherofGodwasraisedon high,byGod'sownpower,tothe highestpinnacleofglory,where theheavenlycitizensprostrated themselvesbeforeher,andJesus welcomedherwiththeardentembraceofGodIncarnate.
