(TalkgivenbyMrs.A.C. StaplesattheConferenceofthe CatholicWomensLeague,June 26,1946.)
Mydealngswithcolouredpeoplegobacksomeyearsandcover agoodmanyfamilies.Ihave mettheminschoolswhereI taughtandhaveseenhowthey fittedinwhensharingacommon interestwhenregardedbythe teacherasanordinarymemberof herclass.LastyearIaddedto thisexperiencebydoingasurvey ofthecolouredchildreninthe metropolitanareaandmet110 children.Imetparents, visited ,theirhomes, andgenerallycame toknowagooddealaboutthem.

Now,consideringthatthegreat

1.Thecolouredperson'sowninstability.
2.Thereligiousbasisbeinginsecurelylaid.
3.Thelackofeffortonthepart ofwhitestomakethemareal partoftheCatholiccommunity.
Ibelievethatthethirdsuggestionistherootofthetroublefailureofthewhitelaypeople.
Toexaminethethreepossible causes-thecolouredpeople'sinstability.Toooften,thewhole oftheirlackofsuccessislaidat thisdoorwhenitshouldbeatour ownforallowingconditionswhich givethemlittleopportunityto succeed.Becausetheirlabouris exploitedandtheyhavenoeconomicsecuritytheyaretcalled unstable.Becausetheygetsea-

Astothelayingoftheirreligiousfoundation:Noweakness lieshere.TheygrowupinanatmosphereofpracticalChristianity -SistersandBrotherswhohave devotedtheirlivestothatcause. Religionismadearealpartof theirdailypattern.Theinterest inreligionsowellinstilledremainsevenwhilethecoloureds areinanunsympathetictownand donotpractisereligion.Iknow onewomanwhosenephewhad beenunjustlycommittedtoaninstittution.Therewasconsiderableunrestaboutit,butwecould getnoredressHowever,hewas senttoT..rcli,ninsteadoftoone ofthelessundesirablereform centres.Now,followinggoodbehaviourthere,hewasallowed 1.omeforaweek-endrathersoon.
