Inthisarticle,FatherPaulCrane,S.J.,SecretaryoftheEnglish CatholicSocialGuild,reflectsuponsomeworkersproblemswhich aretoolittleemphasisedbythosewhodiscusshiswell-beingin termsofwages,hoursandmaterialconditions.

Therehasbeensomeinteresting correspondenceintheBritish Times"latelyconcerningthe typeofincentivelikelytoresult inincreasedoutputonthepartof Labour.

Inoneofseveralrevealingletters,Ireadthefollowingsentence: "TheWorkingman'sneedsare simple;hewantsahousetolive in,awifetocookhismealsand lookafterhischildren;hewants alittletospareforatriptothe pictureswithhiswife,apintorso ofbeer,andafewsmokes;and hewantsthemoneytokeepup :hisstandard."

Atfirstsightthatsentenceis ratherimpressive.Reflection, however,revealsanoteworthy omission.Thereisnomention ofproperty.

True,theworkingmanissaid towantahouse,butmostworking-classfamiliesrenttheir housesandso,intheircase,desireforahousecannotbeidentifiedwithadesireforproperty. Arewe,therefore,toinferthat wage-earnersnolongerdesireproperty?Arethebulkofthe lishcontentwithaproletarian status,withoutdesiretoaccumulateinsomeformorotherthat bitofpropertywhichisatonce thehall-markandguaranteeof freedom?

TediumatWork.

Apossibleclueastowhypeoplehavethispreferenceisgiven inthesameletter:"Atleast75 percent.ofthesepeople(the workers),atanytimedonotlike workatall,ordonotlikethe worktheyareforcedtodofor economicreasons."Andwhy?

Iagreethatthereisaconnectionbetweenmonotonouswork anddecumulation, butIaminclinedtothinkthatthecausesof monotonyliedeeperthanthe merenatureoftheworkdone.I believethatpeoplefindwork monotonous, notsomuchbecause theythemselvesaretoooftenregardedbytheiremployersasappliancesnotverydissimilarfrom themachinestheytend.
