ANewFranceNeeded aNewParty

M.R.P.'sGrowingInfluence

Sincethewar'send,theabbreviation,M.R.P.,invariablyoccurs inthepoliticalnewsfromFrance, todesignateanewPartyofCatholicinspiration.ItissometimescalledintheAustralian press"CatholicProgressive"or "CatholicLeft."M.R.P.arethe initiallettersof"MouvementRepublicainePopulaire,"amovement withagrowinginfluenceinFrench affairs.

Thefollowingdetailsoftheoriginsofthispartyaretakenfrom anarticlewhichappearedinthe London"Tablet":

DuringtheGermanoccupation, allindependentpoliticalmovementswereforcedtoliveunderground,andtheM.R.P.hadan undergroundbirth.GeorgesBidaultandhisfriends,havingponderedthere-groupingandre-sortingoutofpartiesafterthewar, thoughtthatanewFrancewould needanewpartyofwhichthe mainfeaturesoughttobeasfollows:Firstly,itwouldbeRepublican,andwouldacceptthelegacyof1789;secondly,without beingatallprofessedlyCatholic, itwouldhaveanattitudeofrespecttowardsmoralandspiritual forces;thirdly, itwouldhelpin bringingtoitslogicalconclusions thesocialandeconomicrevolutionproducedbythedevelopment ofmachineryandtheappearance oftheproletariat:this, however, wouldhavetohedonelegallyand withoutpublicdisorder.

NEW!PARTYNOT DENOMINATIONAL

TheM.R.P.,therefore,though describedbytheEnglishpressas the"progressiveCatholic"party, isnot,properlyspeaking,denominational.Manyofitsmembers areProtestants.Norhasitactuallybeena"resistance"movement.True,itsfounderswere "resisters"whobelongedtoother organisationsinwhichtheywere activeagainsttheGermans,and itswar-timenamewas"MouvementRepublicandeLiberation:" nevertheless,itspurposelayelsewhere.Theaiminview,from thespringof1943tothedepartureoftheGermansinAugust, 1944,wasnottogathernumerous members,butmerelytoestablish theframeworkofanorganisation whichwoulddevelopintoaparty whennormallifehadbeenresumed.Thecommitteesthatmet duringthewarwerecomposedof veryfewpersonsonly.

itstandstogainalsotowardsthe Left;manysocialistvotersfeel misgivingsabouttheCommunistictrendoftheirownpartyand willdesertitifneedbetopreventthesuccessoftheextremists.AtarecentdistrictcouncilelectiontheCommunistslost aseatwhichwasgainedbythe M.R.P.thankstothesupportof 2000Socialistvoters;andthis-has occurredrepeatedlyoflate.Besidesitmaybereasonablyargued that,previoustotheappearance oftheM.R.P.,manyvotershad tofaceapainfulproblemofconscience.Theirsympathiesdid notinclinethemtowardsthefinancialinterestsandsocialselfishnessoftenrepresentedbythe Rigth,andtheywererepelledby theanti-clericalpolicyoftheLeft. Undoubtedlythereweremany votersfacedwiththisdilemma, fromwhichtheM.R.P.hasallowedthemtoescape.

Thereis,however,afurther causeforthesuccessofthenew party,whichistobesoughtinthe rapiddevelopmentofthespecialisedmovementsof"CatholicAction,"theJ.O.C.(YoungChristianWorkers),J.A.C.(Young ChristianPeasants),theJ.E.C. Itwouldscarcelyheanexaggerationtosaythattheybroughtto theM.R.P.thehulkofitsyouthfulsupporters.
