Thereforethecorrectanswerto yourquestionisthatthealtar boyscarryoutthedirectionofthe Rubrics,thecongregationdoes not,butfollowsanothersetprocedure.

ButyoumightaskwhythecongregationdoesnotfollowtheRubrics?

Becauseitisalongstanding customforthepeopletostandat theCreed,sitfromtheOffertory totheSanctus,andsoon-the mannerofassistingatMassto whichyouareaccustomed.It seemsalsothatthiscustomwas broughttoAustraliafromIrelandbytheearlyCatholics.Furthermorethiscustomreceivedthe blessingoftheAustralianHierarchy,fiftyyearsago,attheSecondPlenaryCouncilofAustralia. InanappendixtotheDecreesof theCouncil.therewasinserteda ceremonialfortheattendanceof thelaityatMass;andtheceremonialinregardtoattendanceat LowMasswasthattowhichour peoplearenowaccustomed.

Wemayleavetoauthoritieson Liturgythetheoreticalquestions abouttheLiturgicalvalueof theseinstructionsandhowthey aretobereconciledwiththeRubricoftheMissal.Inpracticeour peoplefollowthem.Ourpresent concerniswiththeoriginofthe procedurefollowedbyourpeople atMass, whichincludesstanding duringtherecitaloftheCreed.
