HereagainMary,thetender Virgin,themostamiable,unselfish Mother,isforcedintoyetanother longjourney,thistimetosafeguardtheheavenlytreasureentrustedtoherliketoacityofrefuge,theTowerofDavid.

Nodetailsaregivenusbythe inspiredwriterofthejourneyof theHolyFamilyfromNazarethto Egypt.Artists,oftenbasedon tradition,havegivenfreeventto theirimagination.Theyrepresent theholyrefugees,MaryandJoseph,nowheavilytrudgingalong thesandytrekofthedesertwith theHolyInfantastheironlysupport,nowgraciouslyindulgingunderarefreshingshadeofthelonelyoasisinthecaressesandfamiliarintimaciesoftheChildGod.

TheexileinEgyptwasprolongeduntilthedeathofHerod,some say,onlyafewmonths,others sevenyears..HeretheHoly Familysufferedundoubtedly manyprivations.Fromherethe VirginMotherheardRachelbewailingherchildreninRama,and themourningandlamentationsof theinnocentvictims-aforetaste forherofthatloudvoice.fromthe lipsofhercrucifiedSon,which openedthegraves,madetheearth quake,theveiloftheTemplerent intwo,butwhichcannotalways breaktheheartsofmen.

"TherewasamarriageinCana ofGalilee;andtheMotherof esuswasthere."ThelifeofretirementinNazarethhadcometo anend. Josephmostprobably hadalreadypassedawaytothe enjoymentofheavenlybliss. Jesusisrepresentedbytradition astakingleaveofHisMother sometimebeforethistoenter intopubliclife.Afewartists, likeCorreggio,haveillustratedthe incident.Durer,Ch.Holmesremarks,attainshere'toadignity andpathoswhichevenGiovanni Bellini,thesuprememasterof suchnoblesorrows,hasneverexcelled.'Maryprobablyfollowed atclosedistancethroughthe townsandlocalitiesHefrequentedevangelisinganddoinggood. Butthisisthefirsttimehername ismentionedinconnectionwith thepubliclifeofherSon.

JesusalsoandHisdiscipleshad beeninvitedtothemarriage.The storyistoowellknowntoneed anydescription.Thecrowded stageofthefeastatthehouseof Levigenerallyleaveslittleroom fortheMadonna,andartistshave beenoftendistractedbytheopportunitiesthusofferedthemfor gorgeousdisplayandornamentationfromtheeverwatchfulpresence-ofMary.Towardstheend ofthebanquet,however,alleyes mustturntothemercifulMother. Thefeasthaslastedfordays,and thenumberofguestsisgreat.

"Thewinefailing,theMotherof JesussaithtoHim:Theyhaveno wine."Thesequelis-knownto everyone.

Tothemodernmind,usedto scientificdivisionsoffeelingfrom thought,theostentatiousbanquetsportrayedbytheVenetians mayappeargreatlyoverdone.We arenotviewingthem,however, anylongerinthenoblesurroundingsforwhichtheyweredesigned inanageofopulenceandglory. Apartfromartistrythejoyous, gracefulcreationofthegreat Veronese,thewaiters,busyatthe stonewaterpotsintheforeground, cannotbutremindusofthepowerfulintercessionofMary.

Thereisonlyoneincident,recordedinallitsdetailsbythe Evangelistwhichseemstothrow apassingshadowovertheblissful heartoftheVirginMotherduring theuneventfullifeofNazareth.

"Abundleofmyrrhismybeloved,"singsMaryintheCanticle ofCanticles,andJesusistoprove truetothisname,thatshemay themoretrulybecalledtheComforteroftheAfflicted.

"Hispareritswenteveryyearto Jerusalematthesolemndayof thePasch."Womenwerenot boundbythatLaw,butMaryalwaysaccompaniedherhusbandon thisyearlypilgrimage.Itisnot saidwhethertheyusedtotake theChildJesuseverytime,butHe certainlywentupwiththem"when Hewastwelveyearsold;"theage whenaboybegantobeboundby theLaw.Hisparents,however, didnotknowwhatwasinstore forthemthistime.

Thejoyfuldaysofthefeastover, JosephandMary,eachwiththeir ownparty,werereturning,but JesusremainedintheTemple. OnlywhenJosephandMarymet intheeveningtheylearnedofthe unexpectedloss.Oh,theanguish oftheImmaculateHeartofMary, thustofindherselfdeprivedofthe presenceandpossessionofherbeloved!Jesus,theWisdomof theFather,hadcomethistime totheTempleonhisFather'sbusiness.ThiswasatemporarY, -,hortinterruptionofthehidden lifeofNazareth.Buthisparents knewitnot."Anditcameto passthat,afterthreedays,they foundHimintheTemple,sitting

Christianpietyhasalwaysintimatelyassociatedinmanyways theholyVirginwiththePassion ofChristandnotwithoutgrave theologicalreasons.Fromthe verybeginningofherexistencethe VirginMotheristhefirstfruitof theRedemptioneffectedbyher ownSon.Andthisnotjustto befreedfromthesorrowsthat Evebroughtuponherchildren, butrathertobeabletosharemore fullythesufferingsoftheRedeem. eiofmankind.Lovebeingthe onlymeasureofsuffering,then onlyshallweunderstandthepain whichthepureheartofMaryhad toundergowhenwearegivento comprehendthelimitofherlove fortheSonofGod,Whowasalso herown.Indeed,Mary'ssoulwas piercedthroughbythesamenails thatfastenedtotheCrossthepreciousbodyofherDivineSon, thus"blottingoutthehandwritingofthedecreethatwasagainst us,whichwascontrarytous,takingthesameoutoftheway." (Col.II.,14.)ThoughnotrecordedintheSacredPages,Mary musthavefollowedcloselyallthe movementsofJesusduringHis Passion.PerhapsshewaspresentattheceremoniesoftheLast Supper,orevenwitnessedthetorturesofHisAgonyintheGarden ofOlives.TraditionandartpresenthertousmeetingtheRedeemerwiththeCrossuponHis MouldersonHiswaytoCalvary. Theincidentisoneofthestations intheWayof.theCrossandof

thecloselyassociatedgroupofthe Pieta,ormourningoftheMadonnaoverthedeadbodyofher Son,asinterpretedbyvariousartists.Asimplerformofthe Pietaisthesymbolicpictureof the"MaterDolorosa,"orMother ofSorrows.Herearthasalmost utterlyfailedandwecannotfind acompletelysatisfyingportrayal oftheSorrowfulMotherdeprived ofthepresenceofthebeloved. Forcenturiesthevolumehas bornethenameofThomasa'Kernpisasitsauthor.Millionswho haveassociatedthelittlemasterpiecewithhisnamewillbestartledtoseeitnowappearingunder thenewnameofGerardGroote.

Howandwhythischange?

In1921,PaulHagan,thecity librarian,wasbrowsingamong someoldmanuscriptsinthelibraryofLuebeck,Holland.Among someofthemanuscriptsformerlybelongingtotheSistersofthe CommonLife,hediscoveredone, coveredwiththedustofcenturies, whichturnedouttobesixty chapters'of"TheFollowingof Christ."Herewasanamazing discovery.Ithasattractedthe attentionofscholarsthroughout theworld.

preachingthegospelofJesushe flungalltherichtalentsofhis mindandalltheardourofhis heart.

onlytotheBible,themostinflumtialspiritualbookinallChristendom.

Hisfameasapreacherspread likewildfireallovertheland. Fromnearandfar,peopleflocked tohearhim.Arevivalofreligion andofmoralssweptthecountry,. Willinghelpersjoinedhiminhis apostolate,andwiththesehe formedthecommunityknownas theBrethrenoftheCommonLife.

Withinacenturyagreatpartof Europewasstuddedwithschools taughtbytheBrethren.Tuition wasfree,astheBrethrenlabouredsolelyfortheloveofGod.

BecauseGerardhadbeenfearlessindenouncingthevicesofthe time,sparingneitherlaitynor clergy,hestirredantagonisms,especiallyamongthelatter.They prevailedupontheBishopof UtrechttowithdrawGroote's licensetopreach.Submittingto theepiscopalauthorityunderprotest,heappealedtoRomefor redress.Meanwhilehewithdrew totheMonasteryatWoudrichem.

Herehewas,muzzledandfrustratedinhisburningeagernessto preach,asperhapsnootherman intheNetherlandscouldpreach, theGospelofChrist.Thevictim ofthecalumnyandvindictiveness ofhisenemies,thecruelinjustice ofitallrankledinhisbosom.

Herewasthetestofcourage.

WhatwasGerardtodo?He couldsulkandbewailhisfate. HecouldhurldefianceattheBishopandstartaschismasaggrievedmenhavedonethroughoutthecenturies.

Gerarddidneither.Moreimportanttohimthaneventhevindicationofhisowngoodnamewas theunityofChrist'smystical body,theChurch.Scholarthat hewas,heperceivedthatthere aresomereformswhichcannotbe coercedfromwithout,butmust comefromwithin,withtime, God'sgrace,andtherepentant willofman.

InthistimeofanguishGerard turnedtoGod.FromHimhe drewthestrengthtoendure,and thecouragetobearhiscrossin silence.Outofthatintimate communingofhissoulwithGod therecametheperceptionof mightyspiritualtruthswhichhe wroteinhisdiaryundertheheading,"InteriorConsolation."

Forfivehundredyearsafterhe wasdeadandforgotten,millions whoneverheardofhimweremovingtothemeasureofhisthotight. Andifthepastoffersanyindex tothefuture,millionswillstill bemovingtothemeasureofhis thoughtwhenthelastchapterof thehumanstoryisended.

Thusdramaticallyandsensationallyhasthehithertoobscurename ofGerardGrooteburstlikea meteoruponthetwentiethcentury.'Aslongasmenseekserenityandpeaceamidstthestrife, andtumultoflife,aslongasthey seekthepathwaysofvirtueand holiness,ofserviceandlovetowardGodandman,theywillturn withrelishtothenuggetoflearningandwisdominGroote'sgolden littlebook,themasterpiecethat willneverdie"TheFollowingof Christ."

A.:PassionplayswereanoutcomeoftheLiturgyandRitualof theChurch.TheChurchhasalwaysrecognisedthevalueof drama,asameansofteaching andimpressingatruthonthe faithful.Intheveryearlyages, oncertainsolemnfeasts,suchas Easter,theOfficesoftheChurch wereinterruptedandtheclergy stagedarepresentationofthereligiouseventbeingcelebrated. Naturally,onGoodFriday,itwas thePassion.Astimewenton, theseplaysbecamemoreelaborateanddetailedandwereenactedbythelaityratherthanthe clergy.Bythethirteenthcenturytheywerenolongerperformedinthechurchesbutinthe streetsandpublicsquaresinstead. ConsequentlytheyceasedtobeincorporatedintheChurch'sliturgy,but,however,didnotlose theirreligiouscharacter.

TherecentlyconcludedCentenaryCelebrationswillremaina sourceofprideandgratitudefor manyyearsfortheCatholicsof thisState.NotonlydidtwothirdsoftheAustralianHierarchy attend,butAustralia'sfirstnativebornCardinalwentoutofhisway tocometotheWest,''topay,"as heputit,"apersonaltributeto ArchbishopPrendiville."This largeandrepresentativegathering ofPrelateswasallthemorehearteninginthatweintheWestare sometimesoppressedwithafeelingofisolationwhichisnotmerelyamatterofgeography.Buton suchanoccasionastheCentenary therewasmostconclusiveevidence ofthesolidarityofAustralianCatholicismwhichitselfisareflection oftheuniversalityoftheChurch. Furthermore,thesplendidpress publicityintheCatholicpapersof theEasternStates,andinthe secularpapersofourownState, underlinedCardinalGilroy'sclaim thattheeventwasoneofnational importancebothforChurchand State.

Duringthepasttenyearsthe ChurchinW.A.hasmadeenormousadvancesundertheguidance ans;inspirationofayoungand vigorousArchbishop.Butthe comingofwarandintheinterveningsixyearsthisprogresswas halted,andsuchahiatuseasilybecomesthepretextforlassitudeand "sitting-back. Sothatpsychologically,theCentenarycameatthe verymomentwhentheCatholic peopleofthisStateneededafresh stimulus.AndtheCentenarycertainlygavetheChurchafillip whichnothingelsecouldhave donesoeffectively.Thevivid recollectionofourpioneers-and wehavehadapostolicmenof whomanycountrywouldbe proud-musthavedrivenhomethe truthofhowhardlytheseedof Faithwasplantedandofhoweasilywetakeforgrantedwhatwas wonbythemostsplendidhard workandself-sacrifice.Wewere broughtsuddenlyintotouchwith theunceasingmissionarytradition ofthewholeChurch,andhemust havebeenachurlwhoseheartand

mindwasnotwarmedandquickenedbytheexperience.

Ofthefactorswhichmadesuch ahugesuccessoftheCentennial functionsitmustfranklybeadmittedthattheGraceofGodwas thechief.Thewhole-heartedcooperationoftheclergyandreligious,thespontaneousenthusiasm ithelaity,thesuperborganiselionofvariouscommittees,and eventheprovidentialclimaticconditionswouldnotofthemselves havescoredsuchadynamicand decisivesuccess.Withfullhearts wemightjustlyexclaim:"ThefingerofGodwashere."

But,ofcourse,inthisasinall otherenterprisesofworth,thecooperationofhumanheartsand willswasanindispensablefactor, too.Perhapsthechiefcredit fromthispointofviewmustgo totheCardinal.Hisdignified yetgraciousbearing,hisinfectious goodhumour-theycalledhim"the smilingCardinal"-hiscomplete masteryofeachsituation,hisfacileandfelicitous phrasein hismanyimpromptuaddresses, andhispatentloveofAustralia endearedhimtoCatholicsandnonCatholicsalike.Onecouldnotbut feelproudofsuchachurchman andsuchacountryman,andthere wasthedeepconvictionthat Rome,withhercenturies-oldwisdom,hadindeedchosenaworthy sonofouryoungnationtowear theSacredPurple.

Anothermostimportantelement wasthesermonsdeliveredbyvariousmembersoftheHierarchy. Theirtributestotheapostolic giantsofthepast,suchasBishops GibneyandSalado,madeusrealisetheincomparableworthofmen whosenamesaremorefamiliarto usthantheirhistoricplaceinthe annalsofAustralianCatholicism. Thewidevistaofmissionaryzeal amongtheblacksoftheVictoria PlainsandthefarNorth,among thelepersandtheminers,inthe fieldsofeducation,charity,and culture-soundedoutlikealitany cemenofrenownandlikeacall toactioninourowncomfortable day.

TheenormousorganisationaldemandsonHisGracetheArchbishopandthenumerouspriests,religiousandlaymenwhoco-operated withhim.ensuredawonderfully -smooth-workingprogrammein whichnomajorhitchdeveloped. Deservingofspecialpraisewere theyouthgroups,thechildrenand thereligiousteacherswhosepageantsontheSubiacoOvalwere amasterpieceofattentiontodetail,precisionandtiming.

Finally,theCatholiclaitygave ademonstrationoffaith,ofunity andofspontaneousenthusiasm whichsurprisedeventhemselves. Wearenot,asarule,ademonstrativepeople,butthesheer splendourofeventsliftedusoutof ourselves.Therewaspridewithoutbombast,andeagernesswithoutarrogance.Sothatnotonly willtheFaithofourpeoplebe deepenedandstrengthened,but wehopetohavebeenasourceof edificationandinspirationtoall thepeopleofourcityandState. OnSundaynight,May12,thepupilsoftheMercyCollegesof VictoriaSquareandAttadalepresentedamostdelightfulconcerton thestageoftheCapitolTheatre.Thisfeastofmusicandsongwas heldinconjunctionwiththecelebrationscommemoratingthearrivalofthefirstSistersofMercyinAustralia.Thetheatrewaspackedtocapacity.Allthemetropolitanpriestswerepresent,and oneofthemostinterestedspectatorswasHisGrace,Dr.Duhig, ArchbishopofBrisbane,whosucceededinarrivingintimeatterattendingtheNewNorciacelebrations.

AfewyearsagoPerthaudiences wereenjoyingthefilm,"There's MagicinMusic,"whichdepicted theworkingofthefamousInterlochenMusicSchaal.wherethe creamofAmerica'syouthfulmusiciansaregatheredeachyearto furthertheirstudiesunderthe guidanceofwiseandexperienced musicalmasters,andonMay12 wereprivilegedtoattenda uniqueconcertintheCapitolTheatre-uniquebecauseoftheyouthfulperformerswhoentertainedus infineorchestralandchoralworks interspersedwithagracefuldisplayofphysicalculture,thebrilliantduetplayingofaChopin Rondo-anartisticanddelicate balletscene,andaplay. ThisrareprivilegewastheoccasionoftheCentenaryConcertof theSistersofMercy,andallthe performers,withtheexceptionof someex-pupils,weredrawnfrom VictoriaSquareCollege,St.Joseph's,VictoriaSquare,andSanta Maria,Atadale.Theorchestra andchoralitemswereconducted byMr.E.J.Roberts,bycourtesy oftheBroadcastingCommission.

AsClemenceDane's"Granite"hasfiredthepublic imaginationmorethananyotherplaypresentedinPerth foranumberofyears,itisconsideredusefultopublish hereincollectiveformtheviewsofseveralcriticswhohave expressedthemselvesonthesubject.Fromallaccounts itseemsthatthedecisiontoattemptsomethingreallysubstantialinthefieldofdramawasonewhichwaswisely taken;theoutcomemayprovetobealandmarkinthe post-wardevelopmentofthetheatreinPerth.

"Granite"isanadmirablynameddiama.Thelivesofthe islandersofLundy,theinnerhardeningthatuncontrolledpassion developsinthehigherfacultiesof men,theironfatethatfollowsthe flagrantfloutingoftheNatural Law-alltheseelementsbuildup astoryasunyieldingasrockand callforcharacterisationthat erectsanunpregnablewallbetweengoodmanandbad.

Thefinalitemoftheconcert wasfromtheorchestra,which gaveusasturdyandrhythmicrenderingofWaldteufel's"Estudiantina."Weheardrich,fullplaying-theliltingrhythmofthe waltz,withitsswayingmelody, wasappreciatedevenbythesmallestplayer,andtheattack,when occasiondemandedit,wasstrong andfirm.Sometimeagoamusicalcritic,writingonavisitingconductor'sconcert,spokeofwhathe called"TheConductor'sbite." Maythewriteroftheseimpressionsbepardonedifhechoosesto tryandsumuphisownappreciationoftheorchestralplayingof thisfinebandofyoungmusicians, bysaying,"theyplayedwith verve."

Indubitably,thesuccessofa playdependsnotmerelyonthe abilityoftheproducertoenter intothemindandpsychological temperoftheplaywright,butalso tocastthecharacterswhowill bestexemplifythepurposeofthe play.Forwhatevermaybesaid tothecontrary,allliteratureis writingwithapurpose,whether theauthorintendsitorno.

Inthematterofthecast,Miss Kavanaghisnotabovecriticism. Whiletheplayasawholeisa triumph,itseemedtomethat twoweaknesses,whichcouldeasilyhavebeenremedied,wereallowedtomarthedetailofcharacterisation.Mr.JamesCondon,as Prosper,isextremelypersonable. Asimilar4riticismmightbe madeofMr.RonEvans,inthe partofJordan.Whilehismakeupwasmoreconvincingthan Prosper's,thepartofthe"land happy,ship-wreckingsquire,"sureIsdemandedsomethingmore brusque,morezealous,moreconsciencelessthanitreceived.It mightalsohementionedinpassingthathewentoutintoalashinggaletothetreacherouscliffs, amplyclothedandwitharopebutwithoutalantern!

Thefinalewasthesolemnand majesticPapalAnthem,andhere theconcertended,leavinguswith aiindeliblepictureofjoyous youthdressedinwhite,thesymbolofbeautyandinnocence,expressingtheirfeelingsinthemusic ofstrings.

TotheSisterswhotrainedthem intheearlystagesofawellchosenandartisticprogrammeof musicandsong,ofballetand drama,toMr.E.J.Roberts,whose longexperienceasanorchestral conductorblendedthemintoa youngbandoffinemusiciansand artisticinterpreters,andlast,but bynomeansleast,totheseyouthfulartiststhemselves,whoseemedtoenjoyeverymomentoftheir musicmaking,whichgavetheir veryappreciativeaudienceso muchpleasure,ourcongratulations andourdeepgratitudeforamemorableconcertonamemorableoccasion-theCentenaryoftheSistersofMercyinW.A.

However,theseareminorblemisheswhichdonotdetractseriouslyfromtheexcellenceofthe production. MissPeggyNunn, asJudith,sustainedarolewhich rangedthroughaformidable gamutofemotionaldemands.She metthemwithpoiseandunderstanding,andheractinginthe terrificclimaxreallyheldtheaudiencebreathless.MissNunn makesmosteffectiveuseofthe lowerregisterofhervoicewhich mightwellbestudiedbyaspiring actresses.Hermemoryisalso phenomenal,andsheranged throughfourwholeactswithouta lapseoraprompt.

Mr.John!Akehadaroleofintensedifficulty.AstheNamelessManwhocameoutofthesea hehastoconveytotheaudience theconvictionthatherepresents evilincarnate.ToallbutJudith onthestagehemustappeara zany,awitlessservant.How wellhesustainedthisdoubleillusionwasevidencedbythethrill whichpassedovertheaudienceat hiseveryappearance.Hiswasa superbcharacterisation,andhe wasprobablyoneofveryfewin Perthwhocouldhaveattempted suchapartandpreserveditfrom beingludicrous.Hismacabreappearance,andhisvoicemodulation,whetherinunctionorthreat, suitedadmirably,andhisplaying isdeservingofthehighestcommendation.

Despitethecriticismabove,Mr. RonEvanswasverymuchat

homeinthepartofJordan,.He hadalltheprideoftheyeoman, asenseofproprietorshipoverhis wife,whileexultinginherwild spirit,andanairofpracticality andruthlessnessthatrangtrue. Mr.Condonwasalsoexcellent, bringingintohighreliefasense ofidealismandhonourwhichthe othercharacters(Pennyexcluded/sosadlylacked.Hisromanticmomentswerehighlyconvincing.

As"littlePennyHolt,"Miss CarmelMorangaveaportrayalof girlishsweetnessandinnocence, whichservedasanadmirablefoil againstthesinisterbackgroundof thedrama.Thepartsuitedher nicely,andshediditfulljustice.

Astheclergyman,Mr.BillBrown gavehisusualpolishedperformance,fittingintothepartasif tothemannerborn.Thedecor, designedbyMissKayKinnane, wasmasterful,whilethelighting. musicalandsoundeffectswerebeyondreproach.

"Granite"wasareallyoutstandingperformance,anditsextended seasononWednesdayandFriday tenextweekshouldnotbemissed byanyloveroftheligitimatetheatre.Itmightberegardedasa standardpieceofexcellentproductionandintelligentactingfor amateurstoemulate.Everywheretheexperienceandsure handofMissKavanagh'sdirectionwasevident.

Itwasapitythatthelastperformanceshouldhavebeenmarredbythefiascooftheflowers.

Iftheremustbebouquets,andI amnotatallsureitisagood idea,letthembehandledwithexpedition.Asitwasthescene waspainfullyprolongedlikethose atagraveside. -"GREX."

Therearesomeofuswhohave hadpleasurefromdoingthings withourhands-fromcreating some"poorthingbutourown"whobewailthepassingofcraftsmanship.Wearesailinginthe shallowseasofthemassproduced.Salesmanshiptoooftentakes theplaceofhonestwork.And becauseofthiswewelcomethe morewarmlyapieceofgood craftsmanshipwhenitcomes along.Isawaplaytheother nightthatqualifies.Therewere allthesignsthatproducerand resthadmixedtheiringredients withperspiration,icedthecake withability,andaddedthesmall touchesofgeniusbeforepresentingittotheaudience.Theplay wasClemenceDane's"Granite."

Theprogrammepromisedwell forastart-adramatistofproved

beinggiveninmarriagebyThe obliviousoftheeffectoftheir ability,aproducerwhorefusesto turnoutsecondratematerialand acastthathasproveditself.The playisspunfromthethemeof "Faume-abargainwiththe devilandtheretributionthatfollows. JudithMorrisliveswithher husband,Jordan,onanislandof graniteoffthecoastofEngland. Thepoorsoilofthefarmsupplies enoughfoodtoselltooccasional ships,butJordanseesmorewealth passeverydayintheships,and heturnswrecker,blottingoutthe lampofthelighthousewhen stormsrageofftheisland.He growshardandforgetsthathis wifeisahumanbeinglikelyto pineforthelifeofLondonshe left.BrotherProsperarrives freshfromNelson'sfleetand bringsnewlifeintoJudith'sheart. Angrywithherhusband,she praystotheforcesofevilandis sentaderelictconvictcastup fromthesea.Shebargainswith him,andhe,inreturnforshelter, promisestodestroyanymanwho hurtsher.Herhusbandisdestroyedafterhestrikesher,anda yearlatershemarriesthebrother. He,too,fallsvictimtotheagent ofthedevil,und..:rtheoldpromise,andJudithisleftwiththe strangertoliveoutherlifein fearandrevulsion. Abriefresumeoftheplotcannotdoitjustice.Itisthestrong emotionalappeal-thepictureof awoman,afireofrestlesslessin herheart,quenchedforawhile onlybythedelugeofagreatfear. Thewomanandthemanofevil: amanfilledwithgreed;another, normal;aninnocentgirl-all twistedintoadark,grimpattern: andtherestlessseastormingthe granite,andthewindonthecold stonesofthehouse-superstition andhumanemotionsuncontrolled.Ofthesethedramatistmade aplay,andproducerandcast madeitlive. Oftheplayers-anyonecould havestolentheshow,buteach partwasgivenfullvaluebyMiss Kavanagh,theproducer.Peggy Nunn,asthewife,hadthemost difficultroleI'veeverseenherin, andshedidamagnificentpieceof work Heremotionswereclear

cutandcontrolled-shedominatelthestagefromthefirstcurtain.Asherfirsthusband,Ron Evansdidsomefinework,butdid notquiteshowthedepthsofcharacterandfeelingthatwereinthe part.Nevertheless,hewasvery good.JimCondonhasnotyet learnttodismisshisowncharacterfromapart,buthisportrayal waseasyandclean.JohnLuke, asthehumanwreckage,gavean almostfaultlessperformance.I thinkthathislaughcouldhave beenusedtolifetheplayat times.CarmelMoranputeasy movementandsimplicityintoher pictureofPennyHolt,andBill Brown,astheclergyman,ina shortappearancewasmorethan adequate.ButitwasPeggy Nunn'snight-theauthorgave herthelinesandsheusedthem brilliantly.Attimessheneeds towatchherstageposition,so thatsheisnotindeepshadow whenthefacialexpressionisimportant.Effectsandlighting wereexcellent,andthesetby KayKinnanewasintheclassof theacting.

ClemenceDane's"Granite"is strongmeat,butundoubtedlya thoughtfulstudyofanembittered woman'smind:awomanwitha willasstrongasthatofhergranitelikehusband,shackledtohim bywedlockintheirugly,utilitariangranitehomeonlonelyLundy Island.

MissLilyKavanagh'sproductionattheCathedralHallwas smooth,well-etched,asonewould expectfromoneofherwideexperience.Shesustainedthesuspensenotewell,andifhermain characterJudith(PeggyNunn) didnotalwaysremainthewoman ClemenceDanedrew,production wasnottoblame.

MassDeportations. Thedeportationsmentionedby thePopeinhislettertothePolish Bishopsconstituteoneofthe primeproblemsforecclesiastical andcivilauthoritiesinEuropetoday.Allevidencegoestoshow thattheproblemisincreasingin intensity.TheGermansare,of course,thechiefsufferers.Hitherto,thoseresponsibleforthedeportationshavebeentheRussians andtheiremissariesinCzedhoslovakia,Hungary,Bulgariaand Roumania.NowPoland,who, herself,sufferedsoheavilyfrom thisbarbarouspractice,hasjoined inthehuntandisaddingtothe immeasurable!'totalofEurope's suffering.

AfterGerman'Catholics. "Allthesepeople,"saytheGermanBishops,"arethreatenedwith forcibleexpulsionfromtheirplaces ofbirth.Theyarenotallowed totaketheirpossessionswith them,andthereisnochanceof givingthemasufficient,decent basisofexistenceinWesternGermany. TheremainingGermansarebeingsubjectedtosuch terriblerepressionthattheyare compelledtoleavethecountry,or lielowandfindrefugeunderadifferentnationality. "Theworldissilentaboutthis fearfultragedy.Itisasthough anironcurtainhasbeenlowered onthispartofGermany."

TheBishopsadmitthatitwas inpreciselytheseareasthatthe Germanscommitted terrible crimes,buttheyreprobatetheidea thattheinnocentshouldsufferfor theguilty."Thepersonswhoare reallyguiltyoughttobecalledinexorablytoaccount.Butwho wouldhaveonhisconsciencethe deathsofmassesofchildren, mothersandoldpeople?Who wouldberesponsibleforthedespairofmanythousandswho,in theirmisery,layviolenthands uponthemselves?"

Poland'sruthlessnessisallthe moreunnaturalinthatsheisappealingforworldhelpforherown people.LastweekIwenttothe PolishEmbassyforthefirsttime sinceitfellintothehandsofthe Warsawauthorities.There,errs. Auderska,aWarsawsocialworker,toldapressconferencethat 5,000,000Polishchildrenwereunderfedandofstunteddevelopmentbecausetheirrationsreachedonly1,500calories.Infant mortalityisalmosthalfthetotal ofbirthsand60percent.ofthe childrenunder14arethreatened withtuberculosis.

Thisthreattotherising.generationofPolandfollowsthelossof sevenmillionchildrenandyouths under20undertheNaziregime, andthroughterritorialchanges. Thewarhasleftthecountrywith 1,146,000orphans,andthereare 287,000otherchildrenwhoseparentsarestillmissing.

Appealingforfood,clothingand medicines,Mrs.Auderskasaid: "Helpforthechildrenmustbe forthcomingquickly,otherwisenot onlyfivemillion,butallthePolishchildrenwillfacestarvation andillness."Mrs.Auderskais heretotrytobuildupaninternationalrelieffundforPoland.

NowifitisaMovementitmust ofnecessitygoon.Whereto? ItoldyouinthewordsofGeneralMole.AndifitisaNational Movement,allforeigninfluences mustbeexcluded.Spainhas everythingshewantsforherregenerationinherglorioushistory andneednotborrowfromothers.

OnsurveyingtheSpanishsituationattheclosingof1938,General Francodefinitelydeclaredwhat hadalreadybeenproclaimedbefore: "Thevictoryofourarmy,"he said,"isbutasteptofurthervictories.Itmustbeconsiderednot asanend,butasameans.Anyonewhowouldlookatitinany otherwaywouldcompletelyignore ourglorioushistory,andmisunderstandthedepthandthebreadth ofour"LiberatingMovement." Afterthevictoryofarmies comevictoryoverthemindsof thepeopletogainthemallforthe nation,fortheworld,andforGod.

"ThroughtheEmpiretoGod"is acommonsloganintheNew Spain. "Isimplymean,"headded, "thatIhopenotonlytoconquer, buttoconvince.Whatwouldbe theuseofanemptyvictorythat wouldbeconsumedwithinitself bylackofanationaloutlook. Spaniards,allSpaniards,those whoarewithmeandthosewho areagainst,shallbeconvinced."

TheultimatenotionofCatholicsocialreconstruction istherestorationofproperty,theconversionofournation fromaproletariattoasocietyofsmallowners,independentandfree.Thatconsummationis,however,extremely remotefromtheactualitiesoflifeto-day.Tosuchanextent,indeed,thatMr.11ellocfeelsthetaskis"almostimpossible."Thecentraldifficultyisthatwecannotdo sobecausewehavenowayofcreatinganewandeffective machinery,andstillmorebecauseourfirsttaskistoteach aphilosophyofliferatherthanaschemeofthings.Small wonder,then,iftheplainmanwhohasheardofDistributismseesitassomethingsufficientlyremotetobeconsid:Tedunreal.Thereforeitbehovesus,whilekeepingthe ultimategoalinsight,tofaceuptothefactsoflifeasthey areandattempttodistilsomesoulofgoodnessfrom thingsevil.

Ourimmediatetaskappearstobetherelievingofthe lutoftheproletariat,thewagesslavesandthevictimsof Governmentalcharity.Theonlypracticalwayofdoing thisatthemomentistoincreasewages.Logicallysuch actionshouldhavetwoseriouslyilleffects.Firstly,itwill tendtomaketheserfscontentwiththeirlot,toblotout thevisionoffreedom.Secondly,itwilltendtodisintegratethepresentsocialorganisationwithouthopeofreplacingitwithsomeorderedstability.Nowordscan .,_ayjusthowbadthepresentsystemis,buteverystudent knowsthehorrorsofthechaosofatransitionalperiod.The firstoftheseevilsweshouldbepreparedtorisk.Itis notasthoughaconsiderablemassofthepeoplehadany realideaoffreedom,stilllessanyhankeringafterit.In thethroesofthe"depression"themassofmankindconCnuedtoregardindustrialmassproductionastheinevitablefruitofprogress.Higherwageswillserveonlyto confirmthemintheirhorridtraditionalfaith.Butthe secondissuewillhethepointofconcentration,andhere weshallseethebattlerightlyjoined.

Bigbusinessinsomecasesdoesnotpaywagessuitabletohumanbeingsbecausetheessenceofmodernbusiessisgreed.Butgenerallywagesarelowbecausethe competitiveideamakesmassproductionpossibleonly throughsweatedlabour.Ifyoupayfairwagesyouwill breakdownthesystem.Thereforehavearisenthemoderntheoriesofsocialcredit,whichproposetorestorepurchasingpowertothedestitutemassesofsociety.We criticisethesetheoriesonthegroundsthattheyareconcernednotwiththeideaofproperty,butwiththeideaof income.Yetevensowemaybeallies.Wehavea commonground,eveniftheyregardourimmediateobjectiveastheirultimategoal.Weaimtorestoreeconomicfreedom,they,torestorepurchasingpower.These thingsarenotthesame.Itistruethattherecannotbe economicfreedomwithoutpurchasingpower,anditistrue thateconomicfreedomvariesinsomedegreedirectly withpurchasingpower.Buttheyarenotidentical.

Anotherwhorenderedyeoman service:behindthesceneswas JOEREADER,whoassistedBill branchwiththelightingproblemsandstoodattheswitchboardthroughallperformances. Joeconfessedtoaninnateloveof dramaticwork,andcertainlyonly anenth'usiastcouldhavecarried outhisonerousdutieswithsuch fidelityanddespatch.

Hatsoff,too,toPATWHITE, the"prompt,"whocamealongto thefinalrehearsalsof"Granite" andthoroughlyfamiliarisedherselfwiththeplay.Shesatinon allpublicperformances,although, luckily,shehadlittleornothing todo.

ReliableTOMCONDONwas front-of-housemanager,andhewas ablyassistedbynumeroususheretteswhosenamesescapeme.

Surelytheexcellentprogramme presentedbyMr.Schrammwasan ampleillustrationofthis.

Ifitisthefunctionofthedramatisttoferretoutthevaguedesiresandobscuredeceitsthatunderlieourbehaviour,bringthem tolightandrevealtheirnature, thatwemaybeencouragedor warnedbyanunderstandingof theirmeaning,surelyClemence Daneinthesombredramaof "Granite"hasachievedthispurpose.Thefamousplaywrighthas skilfullywovenintoathoughtful andprovocativeplaytheresentnients,suspicionsandfixedideasof fourpeoplelivingtogetheronthe lonelystorm-girtislandofLundy.

AsIunderstandamoreablepen thanminehasthisplayunderreview,Iwillnotattemptanything inthenatureofacomprehensive review.Iwould,however,liketo expressmyownpersonalopinion andappreciationofthisfineplay. Itisacredittoitsgiftedproducer,MissLilyKavanagh,and herexcellentcast.JohnLuke,as anamelessman,washedupbythe sea,interpretedhisrichrolewith effectiverestraint,andadegreeof artistrynotseenformanyamoon inthiscity.PeggyNunn,as Judith,thehead-strongwifesoon tobedoomedbyherownefforts, hadamostdifficultparttosustain,butshemetmostoftheexactingdemandsoftherolewith realability.Therestofthesmall castwereequallyconvincing. "Granite,"unlikethemajority ofplaysproducedinPerthwithin thelastyearorso,isfullofmeat. MayitheraldtheendofmeatrationingasfarastheDramain thiscityisconcerned. TheSistersofSt.Josepherected anddecoratedanaltaroutside theirownchapelfortheout-door Benediction.Theflower-etrewers intheirlongsatindresses,the page-boysintheirscarletcapes, andtheHolyAngelsshowedthe carefultouchoftheSisters.The ChildrenofMarywereingrand numbers,proudlycarryingOur Ladyembeddedinflowers.The CadetsfromAquinasCollegegave upanafternoonoftheirschool holidaystomaintaintheirtraditionofformingaguardofhonour besidethecanopy.

Itwasaprayerful,wellordered procession,thankstothemarshalsl(Messrs.T.EganandW. King). Itiscertainthateverymanwill bejudgedimmediatelyafter death,andaccordingtothework hehasperformedinlife,hisfate willbedecidedforevermore.'In thatmomentthesoulwillbealone beforeJesusChrist.AsitsSupremeJudge,Hewillpronounce thesentenceuponthesoulalone.
