InourCatholicnewsdigestthis eveningIwouldliketogiveyoua fewpertinentcommentsmadeby Sydney's"CatholicWeekly"onthe Spanishquestion,atpresentexercisingtheattentionofU.N.O.delegatesinAmericaandoftheinternationalpressgenerally.
Itisbynomeansaccidentalthat theSpanishquestionhasappeared sensationallyagaininthepagesof theworld'snewspapers.
Theansweristobefoundsimplyinthefactthattheshrewd Sovietpropagandistsareverywell awarethatitisacontentiousquestion,eminentlyabletodistractattentionfromothermatters.
Theplainfactremainsthat,so farasthegeneralwelfareofthe worldisconcerned,theSpanish questionisprincipallythe"CommunistQuestion."'Itmustbe viewedintheworldto-dayagainst thebackgroundofextendedSovietinfluenceandcontrol,and withtheknowledgethatSoviet fifthcolumnsareeffectivelyentrenchedineverycountryofthe world,includingconqueredJapan.
InEasternandCentralEurope, andintheFarEast,thegainsof SovietCommunismareappalling intheirmagnitude.Oftenitis notappreciatedthatwhatishappeningisthattheUnionofSocialistSovietRepublics,asthesphere ofCommunistdictatorshipinthe worldto-dayiscalled,isspreadingwestwardintoEurope,and southintoChinaandtheFar East.Everycountry,orpartof acountry,thatissnatchedinto that"Union"meansthatCommunistworldaimshavedeveloped astagefurther,theneedforeffectingtheproletarianrevolutionin thoseregionshasdisappeared,and thedictatorshipoftheproletariat -tosticktotheCommunistjargon-isa"fairaccompli."
ThewarthatSovietRussia wantedandhelpedtoprecipitate, resultedinunprecedentedgains forCommunismand, also, the UnitedNationsOrganisationhas beenplayingintothehandsoftheCommunistintentionsandhas failedtomanifestsufficientrealisationofthemagnitudeandurgency MtheCommunistmenace, and courageandcapacitytocopewith theproblem.insofarasitunderstandsitorispreparedtorecogniseit.
AndthatispreciselythenoteI wouldliketosoundto-night-a noteofgratefulrecognitionthat theinspiringleadgivenbygreat menwouldhaveachievedlittle enoughifitwerenotforthewonderfulco-operationofsomany fromamongstthosewhomthey wereprivilegedtolead.Thisgreat Centenaryisamostappropriate occasionforrecallingtheunknown sacrifices, theunknownefforts, the innumerableunknowndeedsfor Christofinnumerableunknown Catholicmenandwomen, ofwhat onemightbeforgivenforcalling 'rank-and-file'Catholics,whowould beveryamusedattheideaoftheir beingconsideredanythingoutof theordinary.
Yetitisthesumtotaloftheir effortsthatachievedsomuch.And soithasalwaysbeeninthe Church-acombined,unitedeffort ofthegreatandsmall,thedistinguishedandtheveryordinary,the Bishopandtheboiler-maker,the nunandthehousewife,thepriest andthefarmer,theCabinetMinisterandthesoldierkilledinhis country'sdefence.Wesalute themallto-night,andpraythat we,too,onedaymaybeworthyto sharetherewardthatistheirsin theKingdomofourcommon Father.
Itisreasonabletosaythatthe Catholicalonehaseverrealised andstatedthecorrectrationalism otrecenteventsinSpanishhistory. TheCatholic'sstandinrelationto theCivilWarwascompletely sound,andnothinghashappened todestroytheconfidenceofCatholicsoftheworldontheorthodox Catholicposition-not,ofcourse, someCommunistorotherbiassed versionofit-onthatterribleconflict.TheCatholiccase,which wasnevercompletelythe"Nationalist"case,andfarlessthe"Falangist"one,remainsunimpaired to-day,andwillcontinuetodoso, regardlessofanythingthathas been"revealed"onFranco'sGovernment,orsubsequentlytranspires.But,honest,informed,intelligentthinkingisneededtosee themattercorrectly,andthatisa very,veryrarephenomenoninthe unhappyworldofthetwentieth century.
