


InthestilldarkhoursofSaturdaymorning,HisEminence,CardinalGilroy,accompaniedbyeightEasternStatesArchbishops,Bishops,Monsignoriandpriests,arrivedinPerthbytheWestlandexpress.Theprelates,whoarevisitingtheStatetoparticipateintheCatholicCentennialCelebrations,werewelcomedatthestationbyArchbishopPrendiville.
At10a.m.aliturgicalreceptionwastenderedtheCardinalinSt.Mary'sCathedral. AstheArchbishopsandBishops,precededbythediocesanandregularclergy,leftthe Archbishop'sPalacetoentertheCathedral,theypassedalongaroutelinedbyschool children,membersofvariousCatholicsocieties,andalargecrowdoflaity.Itwasa sceneofintenseenthusiasmandbrilliantcolour,thedeeppurplerobesandbirettasof theprelatescontrastingyetharmonisingwiththeredcloaksoftheHolyAngels,the azureoftheChildrenofMary'scloaks,andthevariegatedcollegeuniforms.The prelatesformedacircleattheCathedralporch,andpresentlytheCardinal,incappa magna(amagnificenttrainedscarletcloakwithanerminecape),accompaniedbyArchbishopPrendiville,appeared.Applause,cheering,andthewavingofPapalandAustralianflagsspokeeloquentlyofthepeople'sconsciousnessofthehonourdoneto ChurchandStateintheelevationofCardinalGilroytotheChurch'sSenate.
AstheCardinalnearedtheCathedralporchthepageantryoftheoccasionwas overwhelminginthebrilliantsunshne.Thesheersplendourofthecardinalitialand episcopalrobes,thesombreold-worlduniformsofthePapalKnightssetagainstthe mellowcreamoftheGothicstonesoftheCathedralandvividgreensofitsenvirons, conjuredupanhistoricflash-backrarelyseenandlongtoheremembered.
Itwasatriumphalprocession,theCardinalacknowledgingtheplauditsofthe crowdwithgenialityandgraciousnessofgesture.IntheCathedralporchHisEminencekneltinprayer,kissedthecrucifix,andenteredtheSanctuaryblessingthekneelingcongregationashewent.SoundnowconspiredwithsighttoperfectthepageantryasthechoirofSt.Mary'sburstintotheexultant ofDr.EdgarFord's "Beholdthegreatpriest."Thetumultuoustonesoftheorganroseandechoedinthe ever-flyinggothicarches.Foramomenthekneltagainatthescarletprie-dieu,then tookhisplaceontherichly-veinedmarblethrone.TheArchbishopsandBishops wereaccommodatedincarvedstallsalongbothsidesofthesanctuary.
Heretherich,imaginativepompoftheRomanritualwasseentoexquisiteadvantage.Themorningsunstreamedininbloodreds,twice-dyedbluesandultra-marine greensthroughthestainedglassofthegreatCrucifixionwindow.Floodlightsbeat downontherichly-tonedmosaics,wherethepurpleoftheprelates'robesseemedto minglewithandenrichtheelaboratedesignsfromtheBookofKells.Thewhiteand blackmarblesofCarrarainthehighaltarwereatoncecontrastedwithandvitalisedby thesplurgeofcolour.
Itwouldhavebeenindeeddifficulttohavefoundamorefelicitoussettingforthis historicoccasion.Notonlyhaditalltheelementsofdelightfortheeyeandear,but itwasimmenselysatisfyingtothemind.Everythingwasmarkedwithasenseofappropriateness,andonefeltthatthespaciousnessandperfecttasteofthesanctuary's adornmentreflectedveryperfectlytheaestheticyetunsentimentalappealoftheLatin liturgy.Throughamichrophonesetnearthethrone,ArchbishopPrendivilledeliveredanaddressofwelcomeandcongratulation.HisGracesaid:-
YourEminence,-Onbehalfof allwhomIamprivilegedtorepresent,IextendtoyouamostcordialwelcometothisProvinceof WesternAustralia.Weofferyou ourheartiestcongratulationson yourelevationtotheSacredCollegeofCardinals.ThisCardinalitialhonour,besidespayingdueregardtoyourownundoubted merits,isacleartokenofthehigh esteeminwhichtheAustraliannationisheldbyHisHolinessthe Pope.

Speakingofhiselectiontothe SacredCollege,HisEminencesaid, thatitwastheintentionofthe HolyFatherwhenheelevatedone ofAustralia'snativesonstohonour,notmerelyhimself,butthe wholeoftheAustraliannation.
"TheHolyFathersendsthrough mehisblessingtothepeopleof Australia.Manysorrowsare afflictingtheheartoftheHoly Fatherto-day.Notonlyduring thewar,butintheperiodthatfollowedit,hegrievedthatsomany innocentmen,womenandchildren hadbeenmadetosufferunjustly andcausedpainthattheyshould havebeenspared.Becauseheis trulythefatherofall,thePope grieveswhenanyofhischildren aremadetosuffer.Nevertheless thePope'sheartwasgladdened whenIwasabletotellhimofthe progressoftheChurchinAustralia."
TheCardinalsaidthatheand othervisitorshadcometoWA. becausetheyalsowantedtopay apersonaltributetoArchbishop Prendiville,onwhoseshouldersthe dutiesoftheepiscopatewerelaid atanagewhentheordinarypriest wasmerelybeginninghispastoral duties.Yethehadfulfilledthese obligationssomagnificentlyasto provoketheadmirationofallwho knewhim.HeprayedthatGod wouldgranttheArchbishopan abundanceofgraces,sothathe mightbecomethegreatandgrand pastorofsoulsthathedesiredto beforthegloryofGodandthe welfareofAustralia.
AtnoononSaturday,May4,HisEminencethe'Cardinal,HisGracethe,Archbi5hop,andtheother visitingprelateswereaccordedapubliccivicreceptionintheTownHall.
TheCardinal,accompaniedbyArchbishopPrendiville,drovefromthePalacetotheTownHall inanopencar.Crowdslinedtherouteandenthusiasmranhigh.Hundredswereunabletogainadmissiontothereception.
InthevestibuletheprelateswerewelcomedbytheLordMayor(Mr.Totterdell)andthePremier ttheHon.F.J.Wise).AstheCardinalenteredthehallhereceivedatumultuouswelcomefrom thepackedthrong.AnorchestraconcealedinanalcoveplayedMeyerbeer's"Prophet'sMarch."
TheCardinalandprelatestooktheirplaceonthestage,whereallthemembersoftheCityCouncil,togetherwithrepresentativesofotherchurches,werewaiting.Thehallwastastefullydecoratedwith palmsandmassedgreeneryfrontedthestage.

Thehistoryoftheplantingof theChurchandthespreadofthe Gospelinanylandisfascinating. Whatawonderfulstoryitunfolds, beginningwiththegatheringtogetheroftheTwelvebytheDivine Masterandgivingtothemthe
mostsublimecommissioneverentrustedtoman!Howeagerly theylistenedtohiswordsofencouragementandwarning;how fromtheinfinitedepthofHis DivineHeartHespoketothemin thatmemorablediscourseafter HisLastSupper;howbitterly theymournedHisdeath,howjoyouslytheyhailedHisResurrection,andhowfondly,butsadly, theyheardHisfarewellwordsat theAscension.SoonHesentupon themfromonHightheHoly SpiritandtheChurchwasfinallylaunchedonherdivinemission. Whocannumbertheobstacles, vicissitudesandoppositionof everykindtheyoungChurchhad toencounter?Onthethreshold ofherlifeshewasthreatenedwith extermination.Beforetheendof herfirsthalfcenturyshewasunder banfromthecruellestofthe RomanEmperors.Allherapostles wonthecrownofmartyrdom.
APPARENTVICTORY.
Astheyearspassed,persecution afterpersecutioncrossedherpath, butshesurvivedeveryoneof them.Shewasdrivenintothe catacombs,butsheemergedfrom themwithnewvigour.Withthe peaceofConstantineshethrewoff thefettersofthefirstfourcenturies,andherconsecratedsons wentforthtothefourcornersof theearthtowintheworldfor Christandtorealisethetruthof thewordsofSt.John:"Thisis thevictorywhichovercomeththe worldourfaith."
GREATESTMISSIONARYERA, Butwhentheoldnationsof EuropewerewontotheChurch, thereremainedvastlands,many ofthemyetundiscovered,whose inhabitantsweresittingindarknessandintheshadowofdeath.
Thenineteenthcenturywillgo downinhistoryasthegreatest missionaryeraaftertheapostolic age.Thiscenturywitnessedan extraordinaryexpansionofthe ChurchofGod.Itbeheldthe bringingintothefoldofChristof hundredsoftribesofpeopleinhabitingvastcountriesthatlayfor agesundiscovered,hiddenawayin seasandoceansattheendsofthe earth.TheCatholicmissionaries ofthismodernageshowedforth intheirlivesaheroismthatwould adornthepagesofanyepochof theChurch'shistory.Theyroseto supremeheightsofsanctityand sacrifice,becameexilesforChrist's sake;neverflinchedbeforedanger, andhundredsofthemwonthe crownofmartyrdom,whereall wouldhavegladlygiventheirlives inthesamesacredcauseofChrist.
Manywhothoughtthatthereversesofthesixteenthcenturyhad soprostratedandexhaustedthe Churchthatshecouldneveragain risetoherformerapostolic achievementsorproducesonsand daughtersthatwouldwinforher freshconquests,livedtowitnessin thisnotableperiodanewoutpouringoftheHolySpiritwhohad neverdesertedtheChurch.They sawherundauntedmissionaries settingsailonunchartedseasto planttheCrossofChristonthe far-offislandsspokenofbyJeremiahwhenhesaid:"Hearthe wordoftheLord,0yenations, anddeclareitintheislandsthat arefarox."(JeremiahXXXI, 10).

Materiallyandreligiously,Western. Australiahasadvancedwithgiant stridesuntiltodaywefindits prosperityepitomisedinthissplendidcapitalcityemhronedlikea queenonthepicturesqueheights oftheSwanRiver,itsgreatschools anduniversityproclaimingitslove ofculture,anditsnobleecclesiasticalbuildings,crownedbythis cathedral,givingtestimonytothe people'sfaithinGod.
WhenIwasprivilegedtoaddress thepeoplefromthispulpitonthe occasionoftheopeningofyour noblecathedraljust16yearsago, IrecalledhowthefirstCatholic settlerinWesternAustralia-a poorIrishexile-hadbeenaccustomedonSundaystoascendthe summitofMt.Clarence,overlo.kingtheBayofAlbany,andweep asherecitedhisbeads,because therewasnotapriestoraltar withinathousandmilesofhim. Hisconstantandferventprayer wasthatGodmightbepleasedto relievethespiritualdesolationthat surroundedhim.Hisprayerwas heard.Helivedtoseetheadvent ofthefirstCatholicmissionariesin thisportionofAustralia,andto witnessthebuildingofthefirst Catholicchurchinthiscity.

Nowletmemakemyconclusion. OurIrishforefatherscametoAustraliawelltrainedintheirFaith. Theyknewtheircatechlism,ifnot inEnglish,thencertainlyinGaelic.Theybuilttheirchurches andschoolsandsupportedtheir priests.Butwhatsustainedtheir exiledIrishFaithinitsliving force?ManygreatraceshaveestablishedtheCatholicFaithin newcountries.TheIrishexcelled inthis:theylovedtheMass,they hungeredforChristintheSacrificeandtheBlessedSacrament. DemocracyneedsGodbecause ofitsownnature.InademocracythemajorityOustrule, butdemocracymustneverthink thatmajoritiesarealwaysright becausemightisnotright.Democracyadmitsthisbecauseitallowsfreecriticismofitsgovernmentmajority.Itarrangesfor majoritiestochangeandevento contradicttheirpreviousdecisions. Meremobsmayoftendotyrannicalthingsthatfewpersonsofthe sanemobwouldseriouslydefend.
Democracythenneedsnotmerelyfreedominpoliticaldiscussion, anddecision,butalsofreedomto believein,toteach,andtopractisetheChristianFaithofJesus Christ;thetruth,thebeautyand thegoodnessofChrist,theSonof God.Forthusareerrorsperceived,mistakesundone,andthe struggleinthehumanminddirectedtopeaceandjusticeandlove ofGodandman.
MAN'SMINDRULESTHE WORLD.
Menarereallynotfinallyruled bymajority,butbyenduring idealsoftruth,forfinallyitis men'sthoughtsthatrulethe
tianloveareboundtogetherby faithandhopeaswellaslove.A childbornoftheloveofitsparentsforoneanotherandthislove begetsnotonlythechild'slife,but agreatprotectingloveforthe child.Thischildbegottenby love,andnurturedbylove,hasa soulthatneedstolearnthereligionofChrist-thereligionof love.ItneedstolearnofChrist's love,notonlyfromtheparents, butfromallplacedinauthority overit.ThusaChristianschool mustfruitfullyreinforcetheteachingandexampleofaChristian mother.

Itisdifficulttowritewitha calmappraisalofSunday,May5, fortheemotionsofthedayare stillwithinme,andtemptmeto superlatives{whichmightexaggerateanddistorttheimpressions thatIamhopingtoconvey.But turningbackthepagesofthestory oftheChlrchinthisWesternland, Ishallcullfromitsrecordsthe wordswrittenbyMotherUrsula Frayne,thefoundressoftheSistersofMercyinthisState.

"TheBishopaccompaniedRev. Motherandthenovicetothe Church.TheChurch!Whatwas itlike?Imaginearoomabout thirtyfeetlongbyfifteenwide andtwelvefeethigh;ashingle roof,throughwhichthesun,moon, andstarscouldbedistinctlyseen; afewplankslaidlooselyonthe grounddiddutyasflooring;door spaces,butnodoors;window spaces,butnowindow;anold woodencounter,thegiftofaretiredshopkeeper,servedforaltar. Inthemidstofthesesolemn celebrationsandcommemorations thisthoughtoftheunionofthe ChurchMilitantonearthwiththe Churchbeyondthegrave,ismost appropriateandfittingindeed. Duringthesedaysofcelebration (wehaverecalledthehistoryof theChurchinthisStateinthe firstcenturyofitslife.Itwas thestoryofthosewhowereincorporatedinJesusChristbyfaith, hopeandcharity,andwhoformed themembersoftheChurchMilitantonthispartoftheearth.It wasatruestoryoftheChurch Militant,foritwascharacterised bywarfareandstruggle,byapparentfailureandholysucce5cWe haveseenpassinginreviewthose BishopsandPriestswholaboured withsomuchunselfishzealinthe foundationandthedevelopmentof theChurchinthisland.They weregoodandnoblemenwho lovedGodandhatediniquityof everykind.Wehaverecalledto mindthosefaithfulBrothersand Sisterswhosoconstantlyandso patientlytrainedthelittleones oftheflockintheknowledgeand loveofJesusChristOurLord. Thosesplendidreligioushaveearn edforthemselvestheundying gratitudeofallfuturegenerations andtheyhavewonforthernscOves theeternalrewardofthosewho leadotherstofollowinthefootstepsofourDivineMaster.With justpridewehavebroughtto mindthosegenerousCatholicmen whostoodsofirmlyandsofaithfullyineveryconflictforthehonourofGod'sChurch.
CATHOLICMOTHERSOFTHE PAST. Andtheninpiousmemoryandinmosthonoured placetherehascometoour mindsduringthesedaysthememoryoftheirvirtuousandever faithfulCatholicmothersofthe past.Godalonecanestimatethe alueoftheirworkandlivesin thecauseofChrist'sChurch.In thetruespiritoftheChurchMilitantthoseCatholicmothersfought andwonforgenerationaftergenerationthebattleoftheCatholic home.WhiletheBishopsand Priestsdirectedtheaffairsofthe Churchanddispensedhertreasurestothefaithful;whilethereligiousBrothersandSistersinstilledintothemindsofthechildren theknowledgeofJesusChrist;and whilethestaunchCatholicmen stoodeverreadytosupportthe Churchingoodandevildays,in themostimportantenvironment ofthehomethosegrandCatholic mothersformedthatatmosphere offaithandgavethatexampleof virtuewhichhasmeantsuccess andvictorysooftentothecause ofGod'sChurchinthisland.
Suchwerethemembersof Christ'sChurchwhosememorywe haverecalledandwhoseliveswe haveadmired.LikeSt.Paulthey putonthearmourofGodand wereabletostandagainstallthe deceitsofthedevil.Theystood alwaysfirm,"havingtheirloins girtaboutwithtruthandhaving onthebreastplateofjustice."So attheirallottedtimeinthelong courseofthelasthundredyears, theypassedfromtheChurchMilitantonearth,andliketrueand faithfulsoldiersofChrist,they havereportedtotheirDivine Leader.Weareconfidentthat Hisjudgmentupontheirstewardshipandupontheireternaldestinywasfavourableindeed,for theywere"goodandfaithfulservants."

Aswecontemplatethelivesof thedeceasedBishopsandPriests, BrothersandSistersmenand womenwhocomprisedthemembersoftheCatholicChurchin WesternAustraliaduringthepast century;asweseeinthoselives somuchgoodnessandsomuch virtue,wemaybeinclinedtowonderevenatthenecessityofthis SolemnRequiemMassforthe eternalreposeoftheirsouls.But aboveallthegreatnessandthe fidelityoftheirlivestherestands forth,clearlyandsharply,indivine words,thatstandardofperfection setbyJesusChristforeverymemberofHisChurchMilitanton earth:"Beyouthereforeperfect, asalsoyourheavenlyFatheris perfect."(Matt.V.,48.)Itisa standardwhichreachesuptothe veryperfectionofGodHimself. "Beyouthereforeperfect,asalso yourheavenlyFatherisperfect." Nothingwhichisnotperfectly pureandspotlesscanstandbefore Godwhoisinfinitegoodness,incompatiblewiththeleastiniquity. Onlythosewhohaveattainedthat completenessofperfectioncan passdirectlyfromthestrugglesof theChurchMilitantonearthto thegloriesoftheChurchTrium. pantinheaven.
GOD'SINFINITEMERCY.
HenceintotheChurchSuffering inPurgatorymustpassallthose whoatdeathhavenotattained tothatheroicdegreeofperfection.IntheChurchSuffering throughGod'sinfinitemercy,their soulsmustbecleansedfromevery remnantofsin,andtheymustexpiatetothelastfarthingthepunishmentdueltotheirpardoned sins.Whilstthosefaithfulsouls areattractedirresistiblytowards God,theirgreatestGood,theyare keptfarfromHimbytherestrain. ingbondsoftheirownunworthiness.Theirsorrowisallthe greaterfortheintensityoftheir desiresothattheirlifeisatone andthesametimefullofkeenbib ternessandmostprofoundlove. AlthoughtheyliefarfromGod, theycanneverbeseparatedfrom Hisdivinegrace;theyloveHim foreveraboveallthingsandin theirtemporarypainandbanishmenttheyneverceasetopraise andworshipHiminperfectresignationandlove.
ThosefaithfulsoulsnowmembersoftheChurchSuffering,are theheirsofheavenandeternal membershipoftheChurchTriumphantissecuredtothem.God lovesthemtenderly.Heenriches themwithmanypreciousgiftsof Hisgraceandwaitstoopento themthelightofHiseternal glory.ButinthepurifyingactionsoftheChurchSufferingthey mustbecleansedcompletelyby patientenduranceofeverypunishmentwhichtheyhaveincurred. Thusinpatientsufferingandtrue lovemanyofthosefaithfulBishopsandPriests,Religiousand Laityofformeryearsmaybe awaitingstillthatmomentwhen thepurifyingpainoftheChurch Sufferinghasremovedfromtheir soulsthelastoppositiontotheinfinitejusticeandholinessofGod.

Nevertheless,whilewerealise thegreatandpurifyingsuffering ofthosenoblesouls,ourCatholic faithbringstousanimmenseand wonderfulconsolation.Through thatdivinefaithwearedeeply consciousofthegreattruthofthe CommunionofSaintsbywhich ourprayersandourdevotions,our goodworksandouractsoffeif denialcanbeofferedtoGodin supplicationforthoseholysouls. TothisSolemnRequiemMass thismorningmanyofyouhave beendrawnbytiesofbloodrelationshipandfriendshipwiththe departedfaithfulofGod'sChurch. Othershavebeendrawnbythe sacredremembrancethatinparishes,schoolsandhomestheyare thesuccessorsintheworkof Christ'sChurchorthosewhom Godhascalledfromthisworld. Butaboveall,everysingleperson inthisCathedralthismorning hasbeendrawntothisHolySacrificebythatgloriousanddivine solidaritywhicheverbindsthe membersoftheChurchMilitant onearthtotheChurchSufferingin Purgatory.Thatgreattruthmakes useverconsciousofthefactthat thosefaithfuldepartedarestill memberswithusoftheOneTrue ChurchofJesusChrist.Every singleoneofthemisthatbrother whomChristdemandswemust loveasweloveourselves.They aretruememberswithusofthe oneandsamebodyofChristOur Lord.Towardsthemwemust exercisethatloveandmercywhich istheveryessenseofourunion withChristandthespiritualbond whichunitescompletelyevery partoftheChurchofJesusChrist. ThevariousConventsoftheSistersoftheArchdiocesewererepresentedasfollows:SistersofMercy,SistersofSt.JosephoftheApparition,SistersofSt.Johnof God,andSistersofNotreDameDesMission,thePresentationSisters,theSistersof St.JosephoftheSacredHeart,theLoreto,Dominican,andBrigidineNuns..Seated atthefrontoftheCathedraltheyoccupiedpewsoneitherside.
Festoonedwithroses,theHighAltarstoodinallitsglintingmarblereflectionsabovetheclergyandcolourfulcongregation,manyofwhomwereschoolchildren,whosebrightuniformscutswathesofgreenand<larkbluethroughtheCathedral.GroupedoneithersideoftheSanctuary,theHierarchyinalltheircolourful robes,formedapageantofspectacularbrillianceastheymovedaboutperformingtheir variousduties.
TheranksofNunsaddedthatnecessarynoteofbalance,showingthegreatwork done,notonlybyCatholicmen,butCatholicwomenalso,inofferinguptheirlivesin theserviceofChristandtheirfellowmen.
ThroughouttheMassthePlainChantwasrenderedbyaschoolchoirof500children,drawnfromschoolsandcollegesconductedbytheSistersofMercyintheArchdiocese.AstheiryouthfulvoiceswereraisedinpraiseofGod,thereranginthema triumphantnoteofpraiseforthesuccessandpioneeringgreatnessofthoseSistersof Mercywho100yearsagolandedatFremantle.
AtalonelyoutpostofmankindclingingprecariouslytotheWesternedgeofa vastContinenttheseintrepidwomenbroughtfromIrelandafaithwhichinallthe magnificentgenerosityoftheirOrder,theyimmediatelybeganimplantinginthe heartsofthesettlersandtheirchildren.Inpoorandmiserablecircumstancesthey. firstbegantheworkwhichinonehundredyearswastobringthemthegloryweseetodayintheinstitutionstheygoverninWesternAustralia.
ThroughoutAustraliamaybeheardpraiseoftheirteaching,theirgenerosityand devoutnesstothecauseofChrist,whichtheirfoundress,MotherCatherineMcAuley, firstestablished.Tothemmanyofourleadingcitizensowethanksforasolidreligiousandsecondaryeducation,whichthroughtheiryearsofpubliclifehasstood theminsuchgoodstead.
Asatpreviousfunctions,anaccountoftheceremonyandthesacredmusicwas broadcasttothemanypeoplewhofounditimpossibletogainentrancetotheCathedral.ThesegavetheCardinalandprocessionarousingovation,bothbeforeandafter theMass.

Andto-day,mydearDaughters ofCatherineMcAuley,inthefull richnessoftheLiturgywegather roundtheAltarofGodtooffer Himourheartfeltgratitudefor theinnumerableblessingsbestow.eduponourbelovedcountry throughyourministrations,and tocongratulateyouonyourmarvellousachievements.Thehundredyearsthatarepastcoverby farthegreaterpartofourhistory. Theyenvelopthelivesofnoble charactersandoutstandingideals thatgavelifetotheeventwe commemorate.
Greatmenandgreatwomen makehistory;theygiverealityto thenobleness,thegreatnessof whichhumannatureiscapable.It wasthissamehumannature whichGodtooktoHimselfwhen HebecameMan:JesusChrist,true GodandtrueMan;thepersonificationofeveryhumanperfection themodelofeveryvirtue,theinspirationofthehighesthuman aspirations.Hiswholelifeon earthwasacontinuousexample; anexamplewhichitisinthe powerofeverychildofGodto imitate.Themostperfectimitationofthatlifeisrealisedinthe acceptanceofChrist'sinvitation: "Come,followMe."

Thereissomethingunusualand evenextraordinaryaboutCatherine'slife.Herstoryisaremarkablepictureofalifesimply goingasGodwilledit,notwithoutitsstormymomentsanddark patches,butalways,itwould
seem,guided.Borntoalifeof easeandcomfortintheyear1787, shewassurroundedbyallthat makesforworldlyhappinessin herearlyyears.Herfatherwas atrulydevoutmanwhonotonly gavematerialassistancetothe poorbutpersonallyinstructed themintheirfaith.Hermother wasworldlymindedandsought tomoveinhighsocialcircles, whichinthosedayswerecompos-

edmostlyofProtestants.Such counteractinginfluencesinthe homemighteasilyhavebeenproductiveofbadratherthangood, hutinCatherine'scasetheydid butstrengthenherinherlovefor herfaith,andbeforeherfather's deathshehadimbibedsomeofhis spiritofdevotiontothepoor.
ADOPTEDBYPROTESTANT FAMILY.
Orphanedintheflowerofher southandbereftofherfather's example,shefostereddeepinher soulherearlyaspirations.Both herbrotherandhersisterhadlost thefaith.MeanwhileourCather inehadbeenadoptedbyaProtestantfamily.Theyhadno leaningstowardstheCatholic Faith,buttheytreatedherwith greattenderness,andsoonfellunderthespellofhersweetnature, which.thoughtheydidnotknow it,wastheoutwardexpressionof herCatholicpiety.Shemingled inthesociallifeofthehouse whereshewassobeloved.She toldnooneofherhungerforCatholicpractices,andsheliveda lifeofprayercontrivingsecretly toengageincertainmortifications. Shehadonegreatjoy;shewas permittedtogivetothepoorwith thegreatestliberalityandshe availedherselffullyofherresources.Shemadethatsamepersonalcontactwiththepoorwhich causedthemtoloveherfather, andshewaslovedbythemalso.
Shealsohadtheloveofheradoptedparents,andtherewasalsoher secretloyaltytoherfaithto+warm herachingheart.
Deatheventuallytookfromher herlovingbenefactors,anditwas herextremepleasuretoseethem bothreceivedintotheChurch. Catherine'sprayersandcheerful generosityofsoulhadwonfor themthelightoffaith.Inhis willheradoptedfatherlefther hisentirefortune,whichamountedtoabout£30,000.
LOVEOFTHEPOOR.
Acharmingyoungladyof27 Years,richnowbeyondthedreams ofthosethousandsshelovedand helped,sureofawarmwelcome intothesocialcircueswithwhich shehadbeenassociated,shecould haveshelteredherselffromthe caresoflife.Shehadlearned muchofsociallife,butshehad learnedalsotherealwantsofthe poor;sheknewthedepthoftheir faith,theirpatience,andtheirdesiretoleadgoodlives.Shehad onepassion,aninsatiableone, namely,aloveofthepoor.
TheshadowofthePenalLaws stilllingeredoverthepeopleof Ireland,andthelamentableconditionofvastnumbersofthem touchedherheart.Shecould notbecontenttowatchthepoor feedonhergenerosity;herpersonalservicesmustgowithher wealth.Sherealisedthatmany ofthemsufferedsicknesswithout comfort,deathwithoutconsolation;shemustworkforthesick.
Shesawclearlyalsothatthework ofmakingChristbetterloved mustbelargelywiththelittle onesoftheflock;thesemustbe taughttoknowandtoloveGod.
Withherworkplannedshe steppedouttotakeherplacein theworldwithouthesitation.But Godhadplansforherofwhich sheknewnothing.Thereare manyinterestingfactsassociated withCatherineinthedevelopment ofherideas.Sufficeittosay thatwhencloudsgatheredonthe horizonhervirtuerosetoglorious heightswhensheofferedtoresign herfortuneintothehandsofeccleiasticalauthorityrequestingonly thatshebeallowedtoservethe poorinanycapacity;takeeverything,butleaveherthepoorshe loved.Shegainedtheday,and itwasGod'sday.God'splan graduallyunfoldeditselfshewas tofoundareligiousOrdertocarry onherwork;shewastobecomea Foundress,thoughshehadnever consciouslysetouttoattainto suchheights.

SomuchofCatherine'slifewas necessaryinordertoappraise thevalour,thefortitudeandthe spiritofthosewhosetoutfor Australiain1845. Catherine's greatestqualificationwasthatshe wasabletoimbueherdaughters withherownspiritofcharityand mercy,ofselflessnessandjoyin thespreadofGod'sKingdomin theheartsofothersthroughthe careofthesick,theneedyandthe littleonesoftheflock.
Catherinedied,butherspirit lived.AnditwasCatherine's spiritthatpromptedareadyresponsetotheappealoftheBis hopofPerth.Dr.Brady,tosenda CommunitytoWesternAustralia.

ButinGod'smindlabour,work,wasstillanoblethingitwasmaninhislazinessand greedwhodecidedthatitwasa badgeofinferiority.Hencein theYearsthatprecededthecomingofChristwasbuiltupthat hugearmyofdespisedanddowntroddenclasscalledslaves-work wasbrandedasasignofinferiorityifnotofshame.Theworld waslargelypagan-thetrueGod wasforgottenandwithHim,His teachingsandideals.Thencame Christ.Adamhadsinned,andas sinhasaninfinitemalicenomere mancouldmakefittingatonement forit.ButChristwasbothGod andman,andsoeveryhumanact ofhiswasraisedtothedignityof andvalidact.Hebecameone ofourselvesineverythingexcept sin,andbytakingonourhuman natureheraisedustothedignity ofthesonsofGod.

Heenjoyedinnocentrecreation,ae atthemarriageofCana.HesorrowedandHerejoiced.These wereallhumanacts,butsincethey weretheactsoftheGodman theyassumedadivinecharacter anddignity.Butwhatismore, notonlywereHisownhumanacts madedivine,Hestampedthisdivinecharacteronallhumanacts, aadsowedareeachmorningto makeourmorningofferingfeeling quitesurethatallourthoughts, wordsandactionsandsuffering canbeunitedtothoseofChrist andsobeameansofmerit-they areprayers.
Oneofthegreattruths thepaganisedworldhasforgottenwasthedignityandnobilityofwork.andsoChristdecided tocomeonearthaworkman-a labourer.BeingGodHecould
havesavedtheworldasaprince orapriest,butno,Hewasboth itistrue,butHeassumedtherole ofacarpenter.Thusnotonly didHeteachthewordthedignity ofwork-Hegaveitadivinecharacter-Hesanctifiedit-andso undertheChristiandispensationit isnolongerabadgeofinferiority butofnobility.Therearemany tubstobedone-someoftheir verynaturemaybehumble,but theyarenothumiliating.
UNIONNOTDISSENSION.
Unfortunatelytheworldisbeing paganisedagainandevenwe,practisingCatholics,areinfluencedby thefalseideasandidealsofthose weminglewith.Astheneedsof menaresocomplexandasindividualshavevarioustalents,not everyonecanproduceallhisown needsandsoofnecessitythereare thosewhoproduceandthosewho buy-ourDivineLordHimself madearticlesinthecarpenter's shopthatweresoldinthevillage. Peoplemustlearntheirtradefrom experiencedcraftsmenandagain ofnecessitytheremustbeemployerandemployee-capitaland labour.Butthereshouldbea bondofunionandnotdissension betweenthem,oneisnecessaryto theotheranduntiltheriseofindustriaismsuchabondexistedweallknowofthehappy,almost familybondbetweenmasterand maninthedaysoftheGuildsin theMiddleAges.
Butwiththeriseofindustrialismwhich coincided withtheneglectofGodand HisteachingsanewGodwascreatedtoreplacetheTrueone.Peoplebegantoworshippowerand riches.Inordertobecomestill morepowerfulandmorewealthy nohumanrightwassacred-the labouringmanbecamemerelya wealth-producingmachine-a wealthwhichhehimselfdidnot enjoy.Magnatejoinedwithmagnatetocreatecombinesandmonopoliesandwereabletodictate anytermstheylikedforthelabourtheyemployed.Thevoiceof theChurchhasconstantlybeen raisedagainsttheseabuses,and PopeLeoXIII.clearlydefined therightsanddutiesofbothcapitalandlabour.Brieflythelabourerisworthyofhishire,thatis inreturnforhisworkhemustreceivesufficienttoliveandrear andeducateafamilyincomfort andsecurity-tobeabletomake provisionforsicknessandoldage, andtohaveenoughforreasonable leisureandculturaldevelopment. Inreturn,ofcourse,hemustdoa fairdaysworkforafairday's wage.Ifthelaboureradoptsa go-slowpolicyhecommitsasgreat asinastheemployerwhodoes notpayajustwage.Theideal wouldbethateverymanshould ownsufficientlandedpropertyso nottobeaslavetohisjob,and thatheshouldhavesamesharein themanagementandprofitsofis placeofemployment.

Mistakeshavebeenmadeinthe pastbyemployerandemployeemostlybecauseChrist'steaching andexamplehavebeenignored andthepurposeoflifeandlabour forgotten.WeCatholicsarea fifthofthepopulationofthisfair land,andifallofus,bothmaster andman,weretoputthoseteacningsinpracticewemustsurely beaninfluenceforgoodandfor sanity.Theresavebeenandare distrubancesinourindustriallife forbothpartieshavesinned,and asSolomonsaid:"Byyhatthings amansinnethbythesamehe shallbetormented."
TheSovietGovernmenthas crownedoneofthemostbrutal andruthlessofitsmanypersecutionswithagestureasfalseand cynicalasanyithasperpetrated initsshortbutblood-stainedhistory.
RecentlyMoscowRadioannouncedthatthe"UniateChurch oftheWesternUkraine"hadsent amessagetoStalinannouncing itsdecisiontoseverallegiance withtheCatholicChurchandto "returntotheRussianOrthodox Church."Thisdecision,saidMoscow,wasmadebytheCouncilof theUniateChurch,whichmetat LvovonMarch8."Wearehappy," saidthisCounciltoStalin,"toask Youtobelievethatnothingwill divideourUkrainianpeople."
InthisbriefbroadcastMoscow askstheworldtobelievethata strongcommunityofCatholicsof theEasternRite,whose350thanniversaryofreunionwiththe CatholicChurchwasrecentlycommemoratedbyanEncyclicalLetter,hasvoluntarilyelectedtoreturntoallegiancetotheOrthodox Church.Whereas,thetruthis thatafterayear'sviciouspersecution,duringwhichalltheir Bishops,thevastmajorityoftheir priests,andgreatnumbersof notedlaymenhavebeendeported, imprisonedorputtodeath,the RuthenianCatholicsnowinRussianterritorystillrefusetobetray theirFaith.Facedwiththisdefeat,theRussianauthorities formedapuppetbodyofapostate priestsandarrangedwiththisfor the"surrender"oftheRuthenian Church.
Moscow'sannouncementwas speedilyfollowedbyanofficial Vaticanstatement.TheCongregationfortheOrientalChurchdeclared:
"TheChurchoftheWestern Ukraineprobablymeansthethree CatholicdiocesesofGalicia,who:n comprisethegreaterport the RuthenianCatholicRite.Wemay rotethatalltheBishopsofthese diocesesandtheirrespectiveauxiliarieshavebeeneitherdeported Orimprisoned,whilethegreatpart oftheclergyhavebeenputinsuch aconditionastobeunableto exercisetheirministry.

Moscowthenpassedtheballto thePatriarchAlexius,who promptlyrespondedbyissuingthe nownotoriousappeal-sinceexplicitlycondemnedbytheHoly Father-totheRuthenianCatholicstoforsweartheirallegianceto RomeandentertheOrthodox fold.ThePatriarchtookthepracticalstepatthesametimeofincieasingthenumberofhisclergy inGalicia.Dove-tailingintothis movecametheannouncementby theSovietauthoritiesthatapetitionby20peopleinanylocality wassufficienttocausethetransferofaCatholicChurchtoOrthodoxownership.MeanwhileCatholicpriestscontinuedtobearrested andtheirchurchesgivenoverto theRussianStateChurch.
COMMITTEEOFINITIATIVE
InMaycametheformationof the"CommitteeofInitiativefor theTransferenceofGreekCatholicstoOrthodox."Ledbythree apostatepriests,thecommittee wasgivenplenarypowers.Itwas constitutedbytheSovietthesole representativebodyoftheRuthenianCatholics(despitethefact thattheRutheniansalmosttoa manrepudiaedit),anditscertificatewasrequiredbyeveryclergymanwishingtoexercisehisministry.Thecommitteeusedthese factstotrytoblackmailtheRuthenianpriestsintoapostasy.It addedthefurtherthreatthatit aouldsendtothecivilauthorities thenamesofallpriestswhorefusedtobreakwiththeHolySee.
Inspiteofallthispressure,only 42priestsoutof2,700hadplaced themselvesunderthecommittee bytheendofJune.

IntheearlypaintingGabrielappearswinglessandwithoutahalo. Thesearesoongivenhimtoshow hisheavenlyorigin.Hecarriesin hishandthelilyorapalmoran olivebranch;inlatercenturies theybecomeagorgeousgarden. Thenheloseshismanlycountenanceforfemininegrace,andsometimesheiskeptuncomfortably floatingintheairtonoapparent purpose.FinallythepassingcommentoftheEvangelistthatMary wastroubledatthepresenceand atthesalutationoftheAngelhas givenattimesorigintoimproper iinotfantasticinterpretations.
Mary'sConsentNecessary, TheFathersoftheChurchgive manyreasonstoshowwhyMary's consentwasrequired.Oneamongst themisofparticularinteresthere. TheIncarnation,theyargue,is thespiritualspousalsoftheDivinitywithhumannature.AsEve ofoldwasconstitutedthemother ofalltheliving,andinherdisobediencesheactedassuch,so alsoMaryattheAnnunciation gaveherconsentinthenameof thehumanrace,whichsherepresented,thusbecomingthespiritual MotherofallthosewhowouldbelieveinherSon.

Shortlyafterthemeetingof MarywiththeAngeland,aswe gatherfromthecontext,inconequenceofit,theHolyVirgin "wentintothehillcountrywith hasteintoacityofJuda,andshe enteredintothehouseofZachary, andsalutedElizabeth."Thecity inquestionwasagooddistance fromNazareth,aboutfourdays' journey.Wemay,therefore,presumeshedidnotgoalone,but whetherJoseph,wentwithherwe arenottold.Thepurposeofthe journeyisevidentfromthecontextoftheGospel,tovisitand congratulateElizabeth,torejoice withherfortheblessingbestowed uponher.Maryprolongedher stayinthecountryforthree months;shemusthavebeenalso ofgreathelptoElizabethunder thecircumstances.Yetitisnot likelyshewaspresentatElizabeth'sdelivery:thetextseemsto implythatsheleftbeforethe irthofJohntheBaptist.
TheincidentoftheVisitationas toldbySt.Lukehasbeeninvariouswaysinterpretedbypainters ofthelifeoftheVirgin.Sometimeswefindthetwokinswomen alone,embracingeachother,under anarchwayorinothersuchlike arrangement.OthertimestheservantsofElizabeth'shouseholdor thecompanionsofMary'spainting byJuandeJuanes,Josephand Zacharyalsogreeteachother simultaneouslywithMaryand Elizabethinanobviouslyformal arrangement.
"WhenElizabethheardthesalutationofMary,theinfantleaped inherwomb.AndElizabethwas filledwiththeHolyGhost;and shecriedoutwithaloudvoice andsaid:Blessedartthouamong women. UndoubtedlyMary'slifewasan uninterrupted"Magnificat."In thissensethehymnistheVirgin's autobiography.YetBoticelli'sMadonnaofthe"Magnificat"isnot historicallycorrect.Moretothe pointinthisrespectisTissot's illustrationoftheevent,though hepreferstoconsider,againstthe obviousmeaningofthetext,that Maryutteredherhymnofpraise intheprivacyofhercousin'sgardenatsomefurtherinterview.In anycase,the"Magnificat"isundoubtedlythejoyfuloutpouringof aheartpossessedbytheSpiritof GodwhichatthatmomentcompletelypervadedMarY'spersonality,withoutsuspendingforan instantherownindividuality.And Mary,withthesoulmovedtoits verydepths,seesinaprophetic ecstasyintotheDivinePlanset upforher:"Beholdfromhenceforthallgenerationsshallcallme blessedbecauseHethatismighty .hathdonegreatthingsuntome, andholyisHisname,andHis mercyisfromgenerationunto generationtothemthatfearhim."
