Thisistheprayerthatisonthe lipsofHolyChurchthismorning, theprayerwhichisonthelipsof herpriestsatthealtar,theprayer thatisonthelipsofagrateful people,theprayer,thatGodinHis mercy,wouldopenHeaven'sgate, ifHehasnotalreadydonesoto thesoulsofthebravemenwho gaveuptheirlivesintheservice oftheircountryduringtheawful yearsoftwoWorldWars, Forsomeofus,thatprayeris promptedpurelybythespiritof Christiancharity,butforsome ofyouitispromptedby somethingmorepersonal.For amongthatgallantgalaxyofstalwartmenYoucanseethefaces oflovedoneswhoarenomore, lovingfather,devotedhusband, promisingson,loyalbrothers,and thiswar,maybe,sisters,faithful friends.Theywentforth,youthful,buoyant,exuberant,laughing andcheerful,undauntedbyfuture forebodingsunshakableintheir firmresolveunsurpassedintheir patrioticloyalty.Theyleftyou withabravefarewell,asmile lightinguptheirhandsomefeatures,thelovelightintheireyes. Theyreturnednomore.Inaforeignlandorinthetreacherous watersoftheocean,farfromhome andlovedones,theygaveuptheir lives.Todayinaspecialmanner wekeeptheirmemory.Andsofirst andforemostwehaveunitedin prayingtotheGodofloveand mercythatHewoulddeignto givethemthatrestwhichthey havesurelymerited,thatrest whichweallhopetoobtaininthe eter-nallightofHislovingfriendship.

Somethreeyearsagoitwasmy sadprivilegetovisitanAustralian WarCemeteryonthebattlefieldof ElAlemain.AndasImoved fromgravetograveIstoodbeforeonewhichboreastrikingepitaph.Itranthus:"Youwhopass thisway,telltheEmpirewerest herewellcontent."

Content!Yes,Ithinkthey were,thosegallantsonsofAustralia.Theyhadlivedtoseewhat Mr.Churchillsoaptlydescribedas "theendofthebeginning."They hadlivedtoseeRommelandhis armoureddivisioninfullretreat. Theyhadlivedlongenoughto knowwithcertaintythattheir sacrificewouldnotbeinvain,that themonsterthathadthreatened todestroytheirwayoflifewould bevanquished,andthattheir childrenandtheirchildren'schil-

drenwouldliveinpeaceandfreedom.Yes,wellmighttheyrest content.

Thecausefor/miditheyleft homeanddearones,forwhich theyenduredhardshipandprivation,forwhicheventuallytheyhad laiddowntheirlives,hadbeenwell andclearlydefinedbythegreat PresidentoftheUnitedStates whenhehadsaid:"Infuturedays wewilllookforwardtothefour essentialhumanfreedoms,Freedomofspeechandexpression everywhere,thefreedomofevery personandtherighttoworship Godintheirownwayeverywhere., freedomfromwant,andfreedom fromfear."Thatmagnificentideal hadbeenfurthersolemnlysanctionedandelaboratedbyRooseveltandChurchillintheAtlantic CharterandlatersolemnlysubstribtdtobyJosephStalin.

Thatsuchwouldbe'thefuture wayoflifefortheworldandfor Australiainparticular,wasthe idealforwhichourgallantmen foughtanddied.Inthehappy convictionthattheirsacrificehad notbeeninvaintheyrestedcontent.

Toseetoitthatthishighand nobleidealisrealizedhereand throughouttheworldisasolemn dutyweowetoourdead,aswell asasolemndutyweowetoour country, PatriotismisagreatChristian Virtue,andithasitsdutiesin peaceaswellasinwar.Themen whosememorywerecalltoday gaveloyalservicetotheircountry andmankindinthedaysofwar. Wewhocherishtheirmemory havethegravedutyofcarryingout asbravelyandconsistentlythe dutiesofpatriotisminthehappier daysofpeace.

JesusChristHimselfreminded usofthisdutywhenhepronouncedthememorablewords"render untoCeasarthethingsthatare Caesar's,andtoGodthethings thatareGod's,"teachingustherebythatourdutytoourcountry isonaparwithourdutytoGod.

Finally,PopeLeoXIII.teaches: "Weareboundbrthelawofnaturetoloveandcherishaboveall thingstheStateinwhichwehave beenbornandhavefirstseenthe lightofdaytosuchanextentthat thegoodcitizenshouldhaveno hesitationinevenlayingdownhis lifeforhiscountry,"Fromthis wecanseethatpatriotismisnot ameresentiment,thecreationof apoet'sfeveredimagination,but agreatChristianvirtueandduty. Moreover,itisadictateofthe naturallawitself.Forourcountryholdswithinitsborderseverythingweholdmostdear.The homeofourbirthandchildhood: thechurohwhereinwewerebaptisedandconfirmed,andwherewe madeourfirstConfessionand HolyCommunion,thealtarbefore whichwerepronouncedthesolemn vowsofmarriage;theschool whereinweweretrainedandeducated,Itisthelandwhichhas givenusourhomeandourwork, whence and drinkwhichsustainourlife.Itis thehomeofourrelationsand friends.Itisthesweetbondofa familyofbrothersandsistersthat speakthesamelanguage,follow thesamecustomsandsharewith theirwholeheartsinourjoysand hopes.Initsbosomliethemortalremainsofthoseweloved,and andthere,too,shallwe.findour lastrestingplace.Itisthesublimesymbolofanucleusoftraditions,somejoyful,somesorrowful, allmostdear,thatthroughthe vicissitudesofhistoryhavedistinguishedourpeoplefromall otherpeoplesandnationsofthe earth,stampingupontheirbrows aspecialcharacterthatshallnever heeffaced.Suchisourcountry. Thereisinourmidstasmall butmilitantgroupofmen,who. whileacceptingtheprivilegesof Australiancitizenship,givetheir loyalty,nottoAustralia,buttoa semi-barbaricAsiaticPower;they havetheircounter-partintheEnglishLabourleaderwhodeclareda fewweeksagothatintheeventof swarwithRussiathemembersof hisunionwouldrefusetohandle anygoodsthatmightbeused againstthatcountry.Thesesame peoplefortwoyearsmalignedour soldiers.sailorsandairmen,while doingtheirbesttosabotageour wareffort,Theycallthemselves Communists.Fortwoyearsthey weretraitorstoAustralia.And suchtheywillalwaysbe-.ACommunistmustbeamaterialistic atheist.Hegivesnoallegianceto God,andthereforetonocountry. Mr.JusticeDavidsonrecentlyreportedwhateverystudentofCommunismknows,thatCommunism isareligion,areligionwithouta God,areligionbasedonanti-God. Therewehavethekeynotetoall theworld'stroubles-noallegiance toGod.

Ourwholewayoflife,ourliberty,ourdemocracy,ourpatriotism andloyaltycannotbeconceived withoutGodandHisSon,Our LordJesusChrist.Forthepast twoorthreecenturiesmenof Christiancountrieshavethought tokeepwhattheywerepleasedto thinkthedesirablethingsofChristianityanddoawaywiththerest, Foratimeallseemedwell.Habits andcustomsoflongstandingare hardtobreak.Theoldwayof lifewascarriedonsuperficiallyby theforceofitsownmomentum. TorepresentOurLadyinher ImmaculateConceptionasa YouthfulMaideninallherbeauty andgraceseemsridiculousatfirst. Butwhenweconsiderhowcleverly

dignityandsimplicity.Others, likeGhirlandajo,inhiswell-known seriesoffrescoesonthelifeofthe Viri.rin,haveusedgreatdisplayof eleganceinthecomposition,on thepresumptionofthelegendthat ,loaohimandAnnawere"exceedinglyrich."Dramatisation,however,wouldnotbeinkeepingwith ihesimplicityoftheevent.

PRESENTATIONOFTHE VIRGIN

TheGospelstoryoftheVirgin hoesnotbeginuntilMarywasof marriageableage,andtherefore nothingisgivenusbytheinspired writersaboutherchildhood.The poeticalcommentsoftheApocryphawerepopularwithartists formanyacentury.Moreadvancedageshavegraduallyrejectedsuchstories;theyaretosay theleastveil'credible,basedon Jewishtraditionsandpractices.

LittleMary,forinstance,isoften representedreceivinginstruction fromhersaintlymotherinthe readingoftheScriptures,andno doubtAnnahadagoodsharein theformingofthemostperfect amongstthedauirhtersofman. Murillohastreatedthesubjectin asimple,realisticway,whilstof theFrenchschoolDelacroix's paintingcausedabattlein1845 ThoughrefusedfromtheSalon,it isdescribedbyLaFargeas"an idylofpeacearidsimplicityfar awayfromtheturmoilandcruelty ofthefightforlifeintheworld."

theartistsuggeststhefirstmomentofMary'sexistencebyrepresentingherinakindofAssumptionofherpurebodyafterdeath intoHeaveninvirtue,asitwere, thepurityofhersinlesssoul, weadmirethehappycombination iuplasticformofbothendsof Mary'searthlysojourn.Thisis theVirgin"Beautifulasthe Moon";hereisthevisionofthe belovedApostleintheApocalypse: "AgreatsignappearedinHeaven: awomanclothedwiththesun,and themoonunderherfeet,andon herheadacrownoftwelvestars." Apoc.'XII.,1.)

THENATIVITY

Nomentionismadeinthecanonicalbooksofthelineageofthe Virgin.Tradition,inthiscase, openlyacceptedbytheChurch, hastakenfromtheApocryphathe namesofJoachimandAnnaas theparentsofOurLady.Many detailsarealsofoundinthese writingsregardingbothJoachim andAnna.Ofparticularinterest forushereistheonetotheeffect thattheConceptionof,Marywas notonlyImmaculatebutmiraculousaswell.Thoseoutsidethe foldsneeratthis"fantasticidea" asatotherpiousbeliefsofthe votariesoftheVirgin.Instances ofmiraculousconceptionsarenot uncommoninHolyScripture.Certainlywecouldeasilyapplyto MarywhattheEvangelistrecords inallitsdetailsregardingtheconceptionofthePrecursor,St.John theBaptist.

InspirationFromLegend. Giottohasrecordedforusthe apparitionofanangelonhiserrandofpromisetoJoachim.Be itasitmay,artistsoftenfound greatinspirationinthelegend whichrelatesthatMaryowesher origintothehappymeetingof JoachimandAnnainajoyfulembraceinfrontoftheGoldenGate. Earlypainters,saysJameson, treatedthesubjectwithmuch naivete,andlatermasterswith infinitebeautyandsentiment.

TheNativityorBirthofthe Virginalwayshadgreatimportanceinart.Somepaintershave interpretedtheoccurrencewith

Offargreaterimportanceandof morefrequentoccurrenceinartis thesubjectofMary'sPresentation ti,theTemple.InEasternart Maryinthisceremonyisayoung ladysuitableformarriage,butin theWestsheisrepresentedfirstas agirlandlaterasaninfantof threeyearsold.Generallywesee thelittlemaidenatthetopofa flightofstepswheresheisreceived bytheHighPriestwithoutstretchedarms.InGiotto'spaintingthe tendernessandapparentanxietyof themotherAnnasupportingthe child'sarmsandthesolemnityof Marystandingwithjoinedhands infrontofZaoharialeareveryexpressive,Behindthevenerable priestagroupofveiledservants oftheTemple,withwhomtheImmaculateyoungsteriscastineher lot,watchattentively.Henceforththeveilovertheheadof Marywillbetheemblemofher vowedvirginity.

Ithastakenthescience-conscious twentiethcenturytoputthis rogueryandracketeeringintobig scalebusiness.Justasmuch awakeas.theirpredecessorstothe gullibilityofmankindregarding themysteriesofchemicals,drugs and"wondercures,"-bigbusiness menlostnotimeincorneringthe patentmedicinemarket,andfor manyyearsthepeoplehavewatchedinwonderasthe"bottledcures" increase,thelabelsgrowbrighter, andtheadvertisinglanguagemore enticing.Mankindwillinglyadmits itsdebttothemedicalprofession, butithasnodebttothemanufacturersofpatentmedicines.The medicalprofessionhasitsoath bindingittotheserviceofMankind,butbusinessmenhaveone thoughtinmind-profit,nomatter atwhoseexpense,orbywhat meansofdeception.

Anexampleofwhatisputon saletothetuneofloudadvertisingandfantasticclaimsiscontainedinarecent"Government Gazette":-"TheHealthAct,19111944.Dr.Schuessler'sCellSalts, KaliPhos.3X.ThefollowingreportisissuedunderSection210 oftheHealthAct,1911.1914:Itis claimedthattheabove-mentioned `remedy'is'indicatedinlossof mentalpower,brainfag,paralysis ofanypart,nervousheadaches, neuralgicpains,generaldebility andexhaustionandsleeplessness fromnervousdisorders.'The'remedy'hasbeenanalysedandhas beenfoundtocontainpotassium dihydrogenphosphateandlactose.

Theactualquantityofpotassium dihydrogenphosphateinthe'adult

dose'issominutethatover9,000 tabletswouldbenecessarytogive theminimummedicinaldoseof thisdrug.Lactoseisasugar whichisofnovalueinthetreatmentofanyoftheabove-mentionedmaladies.Dr.Schuessler'sCell Saltscanthereforehavenocurativevalue.Theywillbringabout noimprovementinanyoftheillnessesforwhichtheyaresaidto beindicated.'Anyexpenditureon thepurchaseofthesesaltswillbe moneywasted.C.E.Cook,CommissionerofPublicHealth."

Thisisareportissuedbythe CommissionerofPublicHealth testifyingtotheuselessnessofthe article,yetanenquirymadeat oneofPerth'sleadingchemists elicitedthefactthatthis"remedy" isonthemarket.Thechemist etated,however,thattheirown particularbusinesswouldhavenothingtodowithDr.Schuessler's CellSalts.

Itisevidentthatifmanufacturersplacedonthemarketa medicinewhichactuallydidfulfil theclaimsmadeonthegaudy labels,andcuredtheillconcerned, theirsaleswoulddroprapidly.The truthofitis,theydon'twantto cureyou.Theydon'twantamedicineonthemarketthatmight beofbenefittohumanity.Ifsuch a"disaster"occurred,andpeople aftertakingacourseofthemedicineconcernedwereabletocast offtheirrheumatism,bronchitis, nervousnessorwhateveritmight be,thenMr.Moneybagswould havelostavaluablemilchcow.

PossiblyMadamcancraminto hermouththe9,000tabletsrequiredfortheadultdose,butwe suggestwithoutanyfearofcontradictionthattheaverageman wouldfinditimpossible.Apparentlythesesaltscontainsomequalityunknowntoscience,something whichtheGovernmentAnalyst failedtodetect,for(here'sthe gem)MadamMiraalsoclaims, withoutsomuchasbattingan eyelid,thattheyhealthe"spirituallyexhausted."

ItconcernsaCreoleadventuress, aseductive,heartlessschemer, ClioDulaine,whointheearlypart ofthefilmisinspiredbyadesire forrevengeagainstthosewhohurt herunmarriedmother,andinthe latterpartbYanefforttosnarea rich,respectablehusbandthrough liesandtrickery.Itcannotbe saidthatthisisaveryedifying themeforafilm,andasitlacked moralcompensationfortheimmoralactsofitsprincipals,itcan onlybeclassedasobjectionable.

somedramaandspectacletowards theendofthefilm,whenrival gangsofrailroadmagnateshadan "all-in"fightfortheSaratoga TrunkRailwayLine,mighthave providedmoreinterestifonehad beenabletodiscoverWhowas fightingWhom,andWhy.

Aswillbeseenfromtheopeningparagraph,IamanenthusiasticadmirerofIngridBergman. Sheisthatfirst-ratecombinationabrilliant,intelligentactress,and abeautifulwoman.Itwasapity toseehertalentsalmostwasted insuchamediocrefilm.Gary CooperastheobjectofClio's affections(don'taskmewhy)was hisusualquiet,competentself. Hehasbeenplayingthistypeof rolewithbutlittlevariationfor atleastfifteenyears.FloraRobsonasClio'smaidshouldreturn tothestageifHollywoodcannot offerherabetterrolethanshehas inthisfilm.Alittledwarf-Ido notknowhisname-hadaprominentpart.Heactedquitewell, hutthewayhisphysicaldefects werecontinuallyexploitedthroughoutthefilmbythecameradidnot strikemeasbeinginverygood taste.Dwarfsarenodoubtinterestinglittlepeople,butthey shouldnotberegardedassubjectsforridicule.Afterall,they, liketherestofus,aremadein llisownimageandlikeness.

Onalonelyislandtwentymiles fromthecoastofEnglandsix peopleplayoutadramawhich intimatelyaffectsthelivesofthree ofthem-thesethreearetheMorrisfamily,ProsperandJordan Morris,half-brothers,andJudith Morris,thewifeofJordan.

Apartaltogetherfromthephilosophicalimplicationsintheplay, "Granite"isanexcellentvehicle foralotofgooddramaticstuff. Thereareopportunitiesinallthe rolesformuchimpressiveacting, andsoundeffects,decor,lighting andthedevelopmentofatmosphereareauxiliaryaidsofgreat importanceindeterminingthe fateoftheproduction.

Afigureintheplaywhocan rightlybedescribedasa"key man"isthenamelessstrangerwho appearssuddenlyfromnowhere,as itseems.Heisnottheconventionaldevil,"hoofandhornscomplete,"nordoesheclaimtobe morethanhuman;buthispeon-

PercyNewton(clarinet),Robert True(clarinet),andJockGood (bassoon).Mozart,asMr.Black stated,wasfondoftheclarinet, andrealisingitspossibilitiesearly featureditthereafterinallhis ,)rchestralworks.TheDivertimento,consistingoffivemovements,madepleasantlistening, andwascapablypresented.It wastypicalMozart,andoneneed notcommentfurther.Byspecial request,thesamecomposer'swellknownTrioinEFlat,forpiano, clarinetandviola,previouslyacclaimedbyEveryman'sMusic audiences,wasagainpresentedby Messrs.Black,NewtonandGlassford.ThisTriowascomposedon August5,1786,forFranziskavon Jacquin,oneofhisbestpupils,an excellentpianiste,towhomhewas personallyattracted.Theunusual combinationofinstrumentsnecessitatedunusualtreatment.The deepertonesoftheclarinetarenot usedoutofconsiderationtothe viola;itsfullliquidtonesareparticularlywelladaptedforthedeliveryofthemelody.TheconcludingRondoisfullofprettymelodiesandbrilliantpassages,and thedifferentpartsaredelicately andindependentlytreated.One r',ustpayatributetoMr.Black's finepianisminthefinalmovement ofthisbeautifulwork.

AnExcellentCombination. Afterinterval,Kreisler'sarrangementofVivaldi'sConcertoinC Major,forviolinandpiano,was brilliantlyplayedbyWilliam Glassford(violin)andEdward Flack(piano).Thisworkinthree movements-AllegroEnergico,An. danteDoloroso,andAllegro Molto--wasmostimpressive throughout,butitsparticular beautywasartisticallyrevealedin thehaunting.dignifiedsecond movement,andtheflashing,imaginativetouchesthatcaughtdelightfullythespiritofitsexciting finale.Theduoreceivedawelldeservedovationfortheireffort.

TheSwanRiverofthosedays flowedthroughnatural,straggling bush;houseswerefewandfarbetween;Perth,beingconnected withFremantlebyaroughbullock track,wasmoreeasilyreachedbY boat.Thus,inquestofthereputedrichfertileplains,camethe firstsettlerswhosecouragewasin greaterabundancethantheir )wealth.

OnJanuary8th,1846,thefirst sixSistersofMercydisembarked atasmall,longforgottenjettyin Perth,and,undertheoccasional gazeofagroupofnatives,made theirwayalongawindingtrack thatisnowHayStreet.

Inhabitantswerefewandhomes fewerstill,butquiteundaunted, thelittleparty,ledbyRev. MotherUrsulaFrayne,proceeded untiltheyreachedthe"Cathedral" inwhichBishopBradywastocelebratePontificalHighMassonthe followingSunday.Inadequate evenforthescantyCatholicpopulation,thelittlehutpresenteda trulydesolateappearance,butthe deftfingersoftheSisterssoon transformedintoamorefitting residencefortheirGod"theonly spotinthatvastcountrywhich theAlmightyGiverhadreserved forHimself."Thisrelicofthose firstdifficultdaysstillstandsin thegroundsofVictoriaSquare andisusedbytheChildrenof MaryastheirChapel.

Itisgratifyingtoturnbackthe pagesofacenturyandreadofthe steadyprogressoftheworkof theseSisterswhoansweredthe calltoacolonyasYetinitsextremeyouth,andtolearnthat theycamefirsttotheWestrather thantothemorepopulousolder StatesoftheEast.

AnotherinterestingandenjoyablerecitalundertheaboveauspiceswasheldatWinthropHall onThursday,April25.Chamber musicIwoodwind)wasafeature oftherecital,andbeforetheopeningitem-Mozart'sDivertimento inBFlat,fortwoclarinetsand bassoon-wasplayed,Mr.Edward Blacklightlysketchedtherange, tonalqualitiesandpossibilitiesof theinstruments.BriefillustrationsfromtheworksofWeber, MozartandTschaikovskywere givenbithetrio,whichcomprised

Afteranabsenceofmanyyears inEurope,MerciadeMamielmade awelcomepublicappearance.It waswelcomebecausemanyofus havepleasantmemoriesofher vocalartistryonPerthconcert platformssometenortwelveyears ago,whensheoftenappearedwith thePerthSymphonyOrchestra. Thetwogroupsselectedwere varied,eveniftheydidnotooze v,ithoriginality.Giordani'spopular"CaroMioBen"openedthe firstgroup.Itwassoonevident, technicallyconsidered,thatthe qualitiesinMissdeMamiel'ssingingthatcommandedmostadmirationwere,firstly,perfectcontrol, and,secondly,abilitytopass throughthescalewithoutapparentchangeofregister.Ididnot think,however,thatthissongdemandedtheamountofdramatic fervourthatwasprovided.It was,ifIrememberMr.Black's translationofitcorrectly,only abouttheinconstanceofsummer windsandweatherconditionsgenerally-notaverydramatictheme, unlessonewentcampingatRottnestoverEaster.Anariafrom Verdi'slight-hearted(?"IlTrovatore"-StrideLaVampa-followed. Thisdealtwiththecomplications thatarose,naturallyenough,I suppose,whenitwasdiscovered thatthewrongbaby(careless labelling,nodoubt)hadbeencast intotheflames.Thismaybea gemofItalianateintensitywhen supportedbyalltheaccoutrementsofGrandOpera.Without themitisnoreflectiononMissde Mamieltosaytheeffectwasone offlatness.Inhersecondgroup shewasmoresuccessful.Reversingtheirprogrammeorder,we heardafinerenditionofCesar Franck'spopular"PanisAngeli cus."Sungwithamovingsimplicityandperfectenunciation,its successwasonlyequalledbythe artiste'ssensitivetreatmentofthe beautifulrecitativeandaria,"Che farosenzaEuridice,"fromGluck's firstopera,"OrfeoedEuridice," producedin1762.Thisofferingdemonstratedthegreatstressthe composerlaiduponrecitative.He wasoneofthefirsttoalmostabandonthecustomaryplainlanguage ofmusicaldrama.SunginEnglish withstrikingfervourandappreciationofthearia'sgreatforce andbeauty,theartistewellmeriteditsenthusiasticreception. ThebikehiketoClontarfon Sunday,April28th,wasagreat success,andafittingsequeltothe EasterMondaycarnival,Arriving thereaboutmidday,thehikers promptlysetaboutexploringthe beautifulsurroundingsandworkedupanappetiteforlunch.After lunchtherewasagameofsoftballforthosewhodidnotgohiking,andascavengerhunt.During thescavengerhuntunusualinterestwasdisplayedinthecolours ofTomKinsella'stieandthenumberofJohnSutherland'steeth(six andthree-quarters.sohesaid). DannyThomasandTomKinsella gaveaworthyexhibitionofumpiringinsoftballandeveryonebenefitedbytheirinformation.The N.C.G.M.helpedtomaketheday asuccess,andevenchallengedthe Y.C.W.toafootballmatch.They wononaforfeit. Weareverygratefultothe ChristianBrothersforthekindness tleYshowedus,andtheirhospitzlitywaswarmlyappreciatedbs everyboyandgirlpresent.

Ourcarnivaldanceheldon Wednesdaylastwasagreatsuccess.Althoughthecrowdwasnot solargeperhapsasatthecarnival heldbeforeChristmas,theattendancewasgood,andeverything seemedtogowithabetterswing, dueperhapstotheenthusiastic effortsofournewandenergetic committee.

Thelatterpartoftheevening tooktheformofaconcert,which culminatedinthestagingofthe play,"TheFoundingofthe Thisplaywaswrittenbyour BranchChaplain,andwasstaged bythemembers.Theevening cametoaclosewiththeservingof supper.

CLARNMONT.

TheEastercarnival,whichwas heldonEasterSaturday,wasattendedbyarecordcrowd,and provedtobeagreatsuccess.Highlightoftheeveningwasour"EasterParade,"whichwasreceived mostenthusiastically.Thisitem waspresentedbyMissesJ.See,E. Sullivan,P.Rodoreda,V.Watts, andM.Rowlands,partneredby fiveofourY.C.W.members,L. Downie,W.Bunbury,G.Spencer, D.Sullivan,andJ.Barker,accompaniedbyMissB.Briggs,pianiste. BikeHike.

ThebikehiketoClontarfon Sunday,April28th,wasagreat success,andafittingsequeltothe EasterMondaycarnival.Arriving thereaboutmidday,thehikers promptlysetaboutexploringthe beautifulsurroundingsandworkedupanappetiteforlunch.After lunchtherewasagameofsoftballforthosewhodidnotgohiking,andascavengerhunt.During thescavengerhuntunusualinterestwasdisplayedinthecolours ofTomKinsella'stieandthenumberofJohnSutherland'steeth(six andthree-quarters,sohesaid). DannyThomasandTomKinsella gaveaworthyexhibitionofumpiringinsoftballandeveryonebenefitedbytheirinformation.The N.C.G.M.helpedtomaketheday asuccess,andevenchallengedthe Y.C.W.toafootballmatch.They wononaforfeit.

Weareverygratefultothe ChristianBrothersforthekindness tleyshowedus,andtheirhospitzlitYwaswarmlyappreciatedby everyboyandgirlpresent. Football.

FootballpracticeeverySunday morningdownatGreenieSquare. Theteamfortheinter-branchcompetitionwillbeselectedfromthose whoattendthispractice.

CATHEDRALBRANCH. Ourcarnivaldanceheldon Wednesdaylastwasagreatsuccess.Althoughthecrowdwasnot solargeperhapsasatthecarnival heldbefore attendancewasgood,andeverything seemedtogowithabetterswing, dueperhapstotheenthusiastic effortsofournewandenergetic committee.

OurFirstGeneralRallywas heldonFriday,April26th,inSt. Thomas'Tall.HisGrace,the Archbishop,Dr.Sullivan,Father Rafferty,andFatherMcCormack merepresent.Therallycommencedwithadance.OurParish Priest(Rev.FatherMcCormack) welcomedtheArchbishop.The President(L.Leunig)thenoutlinedtheformationoftheY.C.W. andthepastactivitiesofthe Branch.TheDiocesanChaplain (Rev.Dr.Sullivan)expressedthe gratitudeoftheexecutiveto FatherMcCormackfortheassistancehehasrenderedussincethe sadlossofourChaplain(Rev. FatherShannon).HisGracepresentedbadgestoanumberofour membersandblessedournewbanner.Inhisaddress.hecongratulatedtheBranchonitsprogress, andaskedtheparentstoencouragetheirsonstojointheY.C.W. IIisGracealsoexpressedthehope thataBranchoftheN.C.G.M.may shortlybeformedinClaremont. Aftersupperhadbeenservedthe dancingwascontinued.During theeveningwewereentertained byMissJoanBridgerandMr.Downie.Themasterofceremonieswas Mr.Downie,assistedbyMr.P. Sullivan.
