Whenasayoungmanhe'determinedtoenterthepriesthood,he waseducatedfirstatSt.Columba's College,Springwood,andlateron inRome,intheCollegeofPropa ganda.HewenttoPropagandain 1619,andwasordainedprieston December24th,1923,byHisEmin enceCardinalRossum,Prefecto. theCongregationdePropaganda Fide.Heisrememberedbythose whoknewhimthenasanexemplarystudentofoutstandingcharacter.Hiscourseofstudieswas crownedbyaDoctorateofDivinitywonin1924.
OnhisreturntoAustraliaDr GilroybecameSecretarytothe ApostolicDelegationunderthe thenDelegate,HisExcellency,the MostRev,ArchbishopCattaneo. Heheldthatpositionuntil1930, whenhereturnedtohisownDioceseofLismoreasDiocesanSecretaryandChancelloroftheDiocese.
InDecember,1934,hewasappointedBishopofPortAugusta, andconsecratedinSt.Mary's Cathedral,Sydney,onMarch17th. 1935,byHisExcellency,theApostolicDelegate,ArchbishopBen nardini.
However,PortAugustawasnot fatedtokeepitsbishopforvery long.Inalittleovertwoyears Dr.Gilroyfoundhimselfbackin Sydney,inaverymuchmoreimportantecclesiasticalposition,as Coadjutorwithrightofsuccession toArch-bishopKelly.

Therearesomegeneralprinciples whichformabackgroundagainst whichMadonnapicturesmustbe considered.Thesemayalsoberegardedasusefulboundariesforthe prospectiveartist. RepresentationsoftheVirginin theirmanifoldaspectsfallwithin thesphereofreligiousart,and thereforemustconformwithits rulesineverydetail.Thisdoesnot meanthatonlysaintsmaybe paintersofreligioussubjects. Whatisheredemandedoftheartististhatheapproachthesubjectasareligiousone,thathe treatitatleastwiththatamount ofdecencyandrespectwhicha naturalhonestyandreligiousdemeanoursuggest,Thisisbutthe
St.LukepaintingtheVirginandChild-Raphael.
Madonnapicturesare,bytheir ownnature,historical.Thispoint admits,however,ofaverywide range,wellsanctionedbytradition.Purelyexteriorhistoricity, thoughnottobedespisedwheneverfound.isheresubjecttoreligiouscontent.Also.inaway,the humansoulissaidtobenaturally religious.Thesefactsgivereligiouspaintingsafreedomand pliabilityofexpressionwhich otherhistoricalsubjectsdonotenjoy.Whateverthechangeofoutlookonthings,'whateverthe fashilorthemoreadvanced, freermentalityofanage,ofa countryanditspeople,thereisalwaysacertaindecorumandrestrainttobeobservedinreligious subjects

Inaninterviewwithnewspaper correspondentsinRome,Cardinal Tisserant,SecretaryoftheCongregationfortheOrientalChurch, roundlydeclared:"Eastofthe CurzonLinethepolicyoftheSoviet'saimsatthedestructionof Catholicism.Since,inRussia,no otherChristianChurchisallowed, practicallyspeaking,exceptthe OrthodoxChurchofMoscow,the orderofthedayisthattheRuthenianChurchmustdisappear."

OneofthepropagandadeviceswedwitheffectbyHitler againsttheCatholicChurch wasthatof"politicalCatholicism."Thesameadviceis standardequipmentinthe armouryofprofession)Catholic-baitersinAustralia.The followingarticleontheChristianDemocraticPartiesof Europeexplodesthemyththat theyareunderthethumbof theVatican,andillustrates howtheEuropeanCatholic laityexercisesindependentand autonomousactivityinthe politicalarena.
ThedevelopmentofactiveChristianDemocraticpartiesinEurope isagainraisingforsomethespectreoftheChurchinpolitics,says theSanFrancisco"Monitor."The journalistichabitofreferringto theChristianDemocraticformationsas"Catholicparties"tendsto supportthisview.Theconsequenceisevidentfromcomment ontheresultoftheFrenchelections.Thestrongshowingofthe PopularRepublicans(M.R.P.)led sometoconcludethatafourthof theFrenchelectorateislookingto theVaticanfor"politicalorientation."
Althoughthisisaflattering viewoftheVatican'spower,itis extremelymisleadingoftheChristianDemocraticparties. I.-AUTONOMY.
TheChristianDemocraticpartiesareoftenlookeduponas"denominational"becausethegreat majorityoftheirmembershipconsistsofknownCatholics,manyof whomareactiveinCatholicaffairs,andsomeoftheirleadersin thepasthavebeenCatholicpriests.
Actually.theChristianDemocraticpartiesarenot"denominational"inthesensethattheyare controlledbythe the leadersofboththepartyandthe Churchhaveemphasisedthat ChristianDemocracymustbeindependentand"autonomous."
apoliticalparty.Foritisbasic CatholicteachingthattheChristianfaithassuchdoesnotcompel theadoptionofanyonepolitical form,butleavesmanfreetopursuehispoliticalendsthroughany meansthatareinaccordwith moralityandjustice. TheChristianBrotherspupils werefavouredwithdelightfulweatherfortheirannualtournament heldatNorthPerthtenniscourts onThursday,April18.ThestandardofplaywasaboutthehighestinthehistoryoftheAssociation,andshowsthatthepupilsof ourCatholicCollegesarebeing coachedscientifically.Although thepupilsofC.B.H.S.,Highgate. hadanotherconvincingwin(this wasthefifthinsuccession)most ofthegamesandsetswereclosely contested.TheHighgateboys wontheaggregateshield,alsothe openandunder13sections.but theLeedervilleboys,withsome verypromisingunder15boys, werebestinthatsectionofthe competition.

Itmustbeadmittedthatthereis,inthiscountry,an amazinganddeplorableapathytowardsthematerialconditionswhichconfrontmillionsofpeopleinEurope.There Laveappearedinthepressaseriesofconflictingviewsas tojusthowbadconditionsare,particularlyrelatingto foodsupplies.Thisisunderstandable,furitmustbea matterofimmensedifficultytoestimatestatisticallythe sufferingsofallEurope.Butfromthestatementsof responsiblepublicfigures,suchasPresidentTruman,Mr. LaGuardia,andMr.R.G.Casey,itisplainthatfamine stalksEastandWest.Thisisnotimetoargueacademically whetherpeoplearemoreorlessstarving.Theyneedfood andnotstatistics.Itisequallyvainandun-Christianto contemplatethatmanyofthosenowstarvingwereour enemiesofyesterday.Forthereis,evenapartfromconsiderationsofChristiancharity,suchathingasthesolidarityofthewholehumanrace.Andevenfromapractical viewofpoliticsitwereextremelyunwisenottomakeevery endeavourtogetfoodtoEuropequickly.Everyoneis nowagreedthatoneofthemostprolificcausesofwaris sownintheaftermathofsuffering,humiliationanddisillusion,whichsuccessivewarsleaveintheirtrain.
IftherewereanyremainingdoubtsastoEurope's positionandtheurgencyofreliefmeasures,theywouldbe quicklydispelledsofarasCatholicsareconcernedbythe anxietyoftheHolyFather,particularlyasregardsthe plightofthechildren.DuringrecentmonthsthePopehas referredt,thismattersofrequentlythatitisclearlyone ofhischiefpre-occupations.Hislatestappealwasmade duringtheweektoCatholicActionists.Afterreferringto "themillionsofchildrennowindangerofstarvation,"the Popesaid:"Godknowshowdeeplywearcconcernedwith theirfate;nevertheless,thedeplorablefaminethreatening infancyandyouthisbutapalereflectionoftheincomparablemiseryoftheirsouls,amiseryspreadingwiderand wider."TheHolyFatherheretouchesonafacetofthe problemwhichistoooftenoverlooked,thatis,thevery realandintimateco-ordinationofthematerialwiththe spiritual.Itisatruthwhichsprings,ofcourse,fromthe verydualityofman'snature.Anditisonewhichthe Churchaloneiscapableofsolving.Butbecausethetwo elementsaresointer-relatedtheymustbedealtwithcon(urrently.HenceitisthatthePopedidnothesitateboth duringthewarandsinceitscessationtobeggarthepapal treasuryinprovidingmaterialreliefforwarvictims.
Onefearsthatthosenationswhichescapedthedirect impactofwararesettlingdowntoapeace-timeroutine withfartooeasyaconsciencerespectingtheirobligations tosocialcharity.ItistruethatU.N.R.R.A.hasdoneand isdoingatremendouslyimportantjobforwhichithas :eceivedthecommendationofthePopeandCardinals.We inAustraliadidsustainonenationaldriveinsupportof andtherehasbeensporadicenthusiasmin sendingfoodparcelstoBritain(whichismerelyhungry andnotstarving).Butasforanysustainedeffort,efficientlyorganisedonarationalbasis,therehassimplybeen nothingofthekind.Australiaisdefinitelynotdoingher shareinbringingpromptrelieftothemillionsofwarvictmsinEuropeandtheEast.Ifpartnershipincrimeis anyconsolation,wemightreflectthatAmerica,bothNorth andSouth,is,asregardsthegeneralrunofthepeople,in asimilarapathy.Thatanyoneshouldliveintheplenitude andcomfortwhichweenjoyinAustraliawhilehalfthe worldisdesperateforfood,clothingandshelter,isan insupportablethoughtandmaywellearnforusalegacyof hatredandcontemptwhichfinewordsandbarrensympathy willnotreadilyeradicate.FortheloveofGod,forthe honourofourcountry,andforourownself-interest,letus feedtheworld'sstarvingmillions!

Twopreliminarymeetingsof thegirlsoftheCathedralParish wereheldrecentlytodiscussthe possibilityofformingabranch. Thefollowingreviewwouldhaveappearedlastweekbutfor extraordinaryspacedifficulties.Thereviewerdesirestocategoricallyrepudiateasuggestionwhichhasbeenmadeandcirculatedthat hewasthewriterorinstigatorofaletterheaded"PassionWeek Drama,"whichappearedinlastweek'sissueof"TheRecord," abovethepseudonym'ChromeVanadium."Hedoesnoteven knowwhat"ChromeVanadium"means.
OnThursdayandFridayof PassionWeekpeopleofPerth weretreatedtosomethingvery differentinthewayofentertainment.IntherenovatedCathedral Hall,MurrayStreet,atwo-part programmeofreligiouscontent waspresented,themainoffering beingamimedrecitalbyfiveplayersdealingwiththeStationsof theCross.Thefirsthalfofthe programmewasasungversionof thePassion,asrecordedinthe GospelaccordingtoSt.Matthew.
Theopeningnight'spresentation washeldinthedistinguishedpresenceofHisGrace,theArchbishop,accompaniedbyalarge numberoftheclergy.Thelaity filledthehall.Thesecondnight wasalsowellattended.
ForthesecondEasterinsuccessionIhavehadtheprivilegeof witnessinginPerthareligious stagepresentation-Irefertothe memorableproductionbythe ArmylastyearoftheResurrectionplay,"Nicodemus."Itisto behopedthatfurtherventures ofthissortwillbeforthcoming, preferablymoreoftenthanat yearlyintervals.
TheexperimentatCathedral Hallthisyearisdeservingof everyencouragement.Itissomethingofanachievementtohave painstakinglyassembledthebest singingtalentavailableamong bothclergyandlaity,andtohave suddenlythrownthepotential strengthofthecombinedchoir intohighreliefbyfixingthebolus foramomentoftimeinadramaticfocus.Eveniftheexperience beneverrepeated,atleastwe haveforeverthatstrikingpicture -FathersLalor,GoodyandMcGillicuddyintoningthePassion onasecularstageagainstabackgroundofvoicesfromSt.Mary's CathedralChoir.
Theexecutionfellshortofbeing excellent.Idonotpresumeto criticisethesinging,butIwas painfullyawarethatthedramatic qualityofthepresentationwas belowpar.Reasons:lackofatmosphere,indifferencetocorrect stagebearingonthepartofthe performers,undueprominenceof choralpyrotechnics.
Youcannottreatofreligionon thestagewithoutfirstofallcreatinganatmospherefavourableto itsreception.Theveryfirstrequisiteiscompletesilence.Theworld mustbemadestill,ifweareto listentothingsnotofthisworld. Theauditoritim,ontheopening night,atanyrate,wasamildly babblingBabelforfullytenminutesaftertheriseofcurtain; thereafter,thereweresporadic outburstsandirtburstsnotwholly unconnectedwiththepresenceof asurprisingnumberofsmallchildren-andsomenotsosmall. Therewerealsonoisyfanstocontendwith,untiltheywerebelatedlyswitchedoff.Itmightbecounteredthatsuchdistractionsare beyondthecontroloftheproducer,buttheyarenotbeyondthe controlofthecrewmanagingthe frontofthehouse-whichemphasisestheneedforco-ordinating theeffortsofallconcernedwith makingasuccessoftheproduction.Itpositstheessentialvalue ofasingle,competentchiefof staff-aplanner. Butatmospheredoesnotsolely orevenverygreatlydependon controlofexternaldisturbances. Iftheinfluencesradiatingfrom thestagearestrong,thennoises off-stagewillmakelittleornoim-

Twomen(KenandRobert Rogers)andthreewomen(Marcia Hodges,MaryMoirandJoanPerrott)comprisedthecast.Themen easilywerethemoreeffective,becausetheywerenothandicapped bytheelocutionarystylewhichdetractedseriouslyfromthework ofthewomen.ItwasmostunfortunatethattheFirstWoman (MaryMoir)shouldbesuffering especiallyfromthisdreadaffliction,ashermimingwasbothintelligentantigraceful.Marcia Hodges,astheReciter,didnot haveagreatdealtodo.Joan Perrott'svoicewasthemostnaturalofthethree.RobertRogers filledinadequatelywhenrequired, butthebulkoftheworkfellto KenRogers,whoinfusedmasculinityandsincerityintohisroleas FirstMan.
Costumingandlightingwere featuresofthissecondhalfofthe programme,butthelightingarrangementsatCathedralHallare
notyetsufficientlyadvancedto permitofmuchexploitation.The besteffortoftheeveningwasthe impressivetableauatthefinale, whenaninteriorcurtainwas drawntorevealthechoirMidden during"TheWayoftheCross) clusteredatthefootofagiant Crucifix.Thecrosswasilluminated,andtheprincipalplayers werenicelysilhouettedinrecumbentpositionsinthedarkened foreground. Obviouslyalotofworkwas putintothePassionWeekpresentation,andthanksareduetothe producers(FatherAlbertLynch andMissMaryMoir),tothestage manager(Mr.PhilipJackson),and toallotherswhoco-operatedto bringtoPerthpeoplesomething novelandarrestinginthewayof entertainment.Thattherewere shortcomingsisnotsurprising.It wouldbefollytoimaginethatwe hadbuttositonamagiccarpet toattainourends, -DEGUSTIIBUS.

Ahiddenchoirwouldhavebeen infinitelymoreeffectiveinconditioningthemindforajustappreciationofthesungPassion;Irecallwithkeenapprovaltheextraordinarypuissanceofthehidden choirin"Nicodemus."Consider howdistractingitwouldbein churchtohavetolookatthe choirandtheconductor.But apartaltogetherfromthematter ofdistraction,ahiddenchoiris valuablebecauseofanindefinable, mysticalsomethingwhichproceeds fromit.Thisiscertainlytrueof aspiritualdramainatheatre.
Ididnottakekindlytothe soundofplainchantinEnglish. Itjustdidn'tseemright.Plain chantinLatinseemsmorein place,morereverent,moresolemn.
WayoftheCross.
Ithasbeentrulysaidthatof allhorse-racingeventsinthe worldtoday,thereisnonethat hascapturedthepublicattention orcausedmorecontroversythan theEnglishGrandNational Steeplechase,runatAintree, Liverpool.Itisrunoverajourneyoffourmilesand856yards, andthereare30obstaclesor jumpstobenegotiated.Itcan beeasilyseen,therefore,thatthe raceisasupremetest,notonly ofjumpingpowers,butalsoof enduranceandspeed.Itdoesnot greatlysurpriseonetolearnthat intheinterestofcrueltypreventiontheBritishParliamenthas frequentlybeenpetitionedtolegislateagainsttheseverityofthis race.Manypeoplefeelkeenly aboutthissubject,andIcanappreciateandrespecttheirattitude.Ihavemyownviewson steeplechases,butbeforethereaderturnsthepage,Iwouldhastily assurehimthattheywillnotbe recordedhere.Whateverone's viewsonthematterare,Idonot consider"NationalVelvet"will outragehissusceptibilitiesor sendhimcanteringofftothe R.S.P.C.A.tolodgeasternprotest.
"NationalVelvet,"byEnidBagnold,isanenchanting,ifslightly fabulous,storyofalittleSussex girl,VelvetBrown,"the12-yearolddaughterofthevillagebutcher,whowinsanunrulygelding called"ThePie"inaraffle.From thenonheroneobsessionisto enterthehorseintheGrandNationalSteeplechase.Sheisaided byMiTaylor(MickeyRooney),a vagabondex-jockey,whoactsas heradviserandhelperintraining thehorse,andhermother(Anne Revere),whotakesthe100sovereignsshehadwonyearsagofor swimmingtheChannel,andpresentsthemtoVelvettoenable hertoenter"ThePie"inthe greatrace.Filmedwithanintensefeelingforitsexcitement andcolour,theGrandNationalis theclimaxofthefilm.Thespectacularandmostextraordinary fallswhichhavecharacterisedthis raceinthepast,thethrillasthe horsesneartheOpenDitchand Becher'sBrook,theclearingofthe lastjump,andthefinaldesperate struggletothewinningposthave beenbrilliantlyphotographed.
HenriGheon's"Wayofthe Cross"issomethingthatcallsfor alargeamountofsympathetic understandingfromtheaudience. Itisnotaplay,butsimplya dramatizationbymeansofvoice andgestureofthevariousStations oftheCross.TheseStationsare sowellknowntousthatinterest intheplotiskilledinadvance, andthusagreaterresponsibility devolvesontheactorstosnake theirartinteresting.Theyhave toarouseouremotionsandexcite ouradmirationpurelybythe exerciseoftheirhistrionicability.
