NORMANTHOMASCARDINALGILROY,firstAustralianto becomeamemberoftheSacred CollegeofCardinals.wasbornin Sydneyin1896,butdidnotenter thepriesthoodinhisnativeDiocese;hewasordainedpriestforthe DioceseofLismore.However,his destinyintheChurchledhimback totheDioceseofhisbirth,a, Archbishop;andhasnowledhim tothedignityoftheCardinalate.

InWorldWarI.heservedin thePostalDepartment,goingoverseaswiththetroops,Asayount, wirelessoperatorhestayedathis postonthetroopship"Hessen, lyingofftheshoreofGallipoli whileenemyshellsfellround,and helivedindangerofhislife.Little didhedreamthenthatthirtythreeyearslatertheyoungwirelesoperatorwouldbecometheArch. bishopofSydney,reigningover threehundredthousandCatholics, andassuchhewouldbecreateda Cardinal.Infact,hedidnotbe lievethenewsasitflashedove, theair.

Whenasayoungmanhe'determinedtoenterthepriesthood,he waseducatedfirstatSt.Columba's College,Springwood,andlateron inRome,intheCollegeofPropa ganda.HewenttoPropagandain 1619,andwasordainedprieston December24th,1923,byHisEmin enceCardinalRossum,Prefecto. theCongregationdePropaganda Fide.Heisrememberedbythose whoknewhimthenasanexemplarystudentofoutstandingcharacter.Hiscourseofstudieswas crownedbyaDoctorateofDivinitywonin1924.

OnhisreturntoAustraliaDr GilroybecameSecretarytothe ApostolicDelegationunderthe thenDelegate,HisExcellency,the MostRev,ArchbishopCattaneo. Heheldthatpositionuntil1930, whenhereturnedtohisownDioceseofLismoreasDiocesanSecretaryandChancelloroftheDiocese.

InDecember,1934,hewasappointedBishopofPortAugusta, andconsecratedinSt.Mary's Cathedral,Sydney,onMarch17th. 1935,byHisExcellency,theApostolicDelegate,ArchbishopBen nardini.

However,PortAugustawasnot fatedtokeepitsbishopforvery long.Inalittleovertwoyears Dr.Gilroyfoundhimselfbackin Sydney,inaverymuchmoreimportantecclesiasticalposition,as Coadjutorwithrightofsuccession toArch-bishopKelly.

March8th,1940,justfiveyears afterhisconsecration.Andnow, insixyearsmore,hehasbeenad-

landshortlyaftertheaudience withtheKingandQueen,and dinedthatnightwiththePresidentofEireandMrs.O'Kellyat whatwasoncethefamousViceRegalLodge. Attheairporttomeetthemwas thtPremierofEire,Mr,deValera: ArchbishopMcQuaid,ofDublin, andmanyotherrepresentativesof ChurchandState.

PresidentO'Kellyprovedhimselftobeamostgracioushost andhis.wifeamostcharming hostess.

DIGNITY

"Ontheoutskirtsoftheparish weweremetbythepresidentof thelocalcouncilandagreatnumberofpeople.AnaddressofwelcomewasreadtousbytheShire Clerk.Accompaniedbyaband,a considerableescortofpoliceand soldiers,wewentinprocessionto theparishchurch.Thehouses weredecorated,andinmanya windowaholypicturewashang- ing.Everyshopinthetownwas closed,andthechurchwas throngedwhentheparishpriest, FatherKillian(abrotherofthe lateArchbishopofAdelaide),read anaddressofwelcome.

"AfterIreplied,wewenttothe presbyteryforthepromisedmorningtea.Ihaverarelyseenatable soladenwithedibles,andaswe satdownthehousekeeperentered proudlywiththreebeautifully roastedfowls.

"ThereceptionatCarlowwas equallyoverpowering.TheBishop, wearingcopeandmitre,metusat theCathedraldoorandperformed theceremonyofaliturgicalreception.Followinguponthis,we 'wereentertainedatabanquetbY theRectoroftheseminary.

"Onthesamedaywewenton toKilkenny,wherewevisitedthe seminary,andreturnedatnight foraPresidentialreceptiongiven inhonourofCardinalMcGuigan andmyself.Fivehundredguests uerepresent.includingalltheprincipalpeopleofDublin.

"OnSundayIcelebratedthe8 o'clockMassinthePro-Cathedral andattheendoftheMasstheAdministratorascendedthepulpit andgavemeamostcordialwelcome.

"AfterbreakfastwiththeArchbishopandclergyoftheCathedral staffIvisitedthegreatAllHallowsCollege,andfromtherewent directlytotheairportforourreturnflighttoLondon.

TheplacethatOurLadyhas inartistoowellknowntoeveryoneinanywayfamiliarwiththe 'historyofartandliterature,or withartpublications,toneed stressinghere.

ThestoryoftheVirginMother is,inmanyways,whollylinkedup withthelifeofherDivineSon. StillthelifeofMarymayalsobe viewedassomethingapart.Thus considered,thewrittenstoryof herlifestrikesusforitssimplicity,Wedonotfindinitanythingnoisyorglaring,ifunusual. Nogreatcomplications,noemotionaleventsdisturbthesmoothly flowing,exaltedbuthumblecareer oftheJewishMaid.

Yetthisverysimplicityisthe sourceofmanydifficultiesforthe artist.Ifheisleftatlibertyin sovastaworldofspiritualwealth, hefindshimselfimpotenttocope withit.Ifheletshimselfbe drivenbyimagination,hefeels thatintryingtoattaintheideal hemayloosegripofreality.He mayhaverecourse.asheought,to hisreligiousexperience,butthen heknowsthataworkofartisa portraitoftheartistasmuch,and oftenmorethanofthesubject portrayed.Howishegoingto keepthebalancebetweenhispersonalfeelingsandthegreatobjectivityofhissubject?Theseare someofthemanydifficultiesthat firstbesettheartistattemptingto findawayofapproachtothe beautyofherwhoisblessed amongstwomen.Luckily,these arealsothecausesthathaveproducedforusthatvarietyofrepresentationsoftheVirginin literatureandart,tosuitalltastes andneeds,whichisthelegacyof twentycenturiesofChristianity.

Theauthoritativesourcesof whatweknowaboutOurLady aretheHolyGospels,mainlythat ofSt.Luke.Itisfromthesethat Marianliteraturehasdevolved. Accordingtotradition,Lukealso paintedOurLady.Whateverthe valueoftheassertion,thepicture thatoriginatedithaslongdisappeared.Neitherareweina positiontojudgeLuke'sabilityas apainterbywhateverelseisleft tous:noristhereanyproofthat hewasguidedbysuperiorassistanceintheuseofhisbrush.Itis certain,however,thattheEvangelistwasunderthedirectinfluence oftheHolySpiritwhenwritinghis Gospel.Scantyasthestorymay atfirstappear,heleftusallwe wanttoknowaboutourMother. GeneralPrinciples.

Therearesomegeneralprinciples whichformabackgroundagainst whichMadonnapicturesmustbe considered.Thesemayalsoberegardedasusefulboundariesforthe prospectiveartist. RepresentationsoftheVirginin theirmanifoldaspectsfallwithin thesphereofreligiousart,and thereforemustconformwithits rulesineverydetail.Thisdoesnot meanthatonlysaintsmaybe paintersofreligioussubjects. Whatisheredemandedoftheartististhatheapproachthesubjectasareligiousone,thathe treatitatleastwiththatamount ofdecencyandrespectwhicha naturalhonestyandreligiousdemeanoursuggest,Thisisbutthe

Madonnapicturesare,bytheir ownnature,historical.Thispoint admits,however,ofaverywide range,wellsanctionedbytradition.Purelyexteriorhistoricity, thoughnottobedespisedwheneverfound.isheresubjecttoreligiouscontent.Also.inaway,the humansoulissaidtobenaturally religious.Thesefactsgivereligiouspaintingsafreedomand pliabilityofexpressionwhich otherhistoricalsubjectsdonotenjoy.Whateverthechangeofoutlookonthings,'whateverthe fashilorthemoreadvanced, freermentalityofanage,ofa countryanditspeople,thereisalwaysacertaindecorumandrestrainttobeobservedinreligious subjects

Asforstyle,oneisasgoodasanotherinitself,thoughconventions mayattimesbemoreappropriate inthepresentationsoftruthsof thespiritualorder.containedmore orlessdirectlyinreligiouspictures, Extremes,itistrue,arenothere easilyavoided,especiallyinanage whenindividualismandsensations reignsupreme.TheChurchdoes notprescribeanydefiniterules concerninganyofthesepoints,beyondthegeneralprovisionthat nothingwhichisnotdecorousbe allowedhitheHouseofGod.Thus

Inaninterviewwithnewspaper correspondentsinRome,Cardinal Tisserant,SecretaryoftheCongregationfortheOrientalChurch, roundlydeclared:"Eastofthe CurzonLinethepolicyoftheSoviet'saimsatthedestructionof Catholicism.Since,inRussia,no otherChristianChurchisallowed, practicallyspeaking,exceptthe OrthodoxChurchofMoscow,the orderofthedayisthattheRuthenianChurchmustdisappear."

TheCardinalwentontosay thatthealternativesfacingthe RuthenianCatholicswere"schism ormartyrdom,"andhespokeof thesystematicdeportationof priests,religiousandnuns."Of the2,000ormoresecularpriestsof RuthenianCatholicdioceses,i4appearsthatoverone-fifthhave alreadysufferedthepunishment!'

Aswellassufferingthesuppressionoftheirschools,confiscation oftheirproperty,andtheexpulsionofpriestsfromtheirparishes -manypriestshavehadtobecomemanuallabourerstogaina livelihood-theRuthenianCatholicsarebeingsubjectedtoconstant andseverepressurebyCommunistswiththeobjectofforcing themtoleavetheCatholicChurch andjointheOrthodox.

theCatholicChurch.Thereisno intentionofmisleading.Ibelieve theCatholicChurchtobethetrue ChurchofChrist.itistrue;butif Iweretotrytoleadpeopleinto theCatholicChurchbymisrepresentation,Iwouldsurelybe offendingtheGodofTruth, whomIprofesstoserve.

Q.:Veryoftenletterssentinto thesessionaccuseyouofpropaganda.and,ifthatweretrue,it wouldbeverydisappointingto me.

A.:Thetermpropagandahas cometohaveanunpleasantmeaninginthemindsofmany-itimpliesspreadingadoctrinebyevery meanspossiblebyallsortsof arguments,whethertheybetrue orfalse.

The"CatholicAnswer"isnot propagandainthissense.Themotivebehinditisadesiretomake theCatholicFaithknown,andin thatsenseitispropaganda-and alsotoenrichthelivesoflisteners withsavingtruthsandthespiritualhelpsprovidedforusbyOur LordJesusChrist.which,ofcourse. itcoulddowithoutmakingany convertswhatsoevertothe Church.

Q.:Ifwhatyousayistrue,thenI oftenfeelthatIshould,atleast, makemoreenquiriesaboutyour Church.Atthesametime,I remainindoubt.

A.:Hereyouraiseapersonal problem.Quitefrankly.believing asIdo,thattheCatholicChurch it;theOhurchofChristandpossessesthewholetruth.Iholdthat anyonewhoisdoubtfulabouthis ownpositionisboundtoresolve thedoubt.Otherwiseheplaces himselfinafalseposition.Inany othermatterofimportance-even ofmerelymaterialconcern-noone wouldbecontenttoremainina stateofindecision.

CATHOLICISMTEACHESTHE WHOLETRUTH

Q.:Ontheotherhand,manyof thequestionsyoureceiveseem toputrealdifficultiesinmyway. Ifwhattheysayistrue,how canyouclaimthatyourChurch istheTrueChurch?

A.:Ananalysisofthequestions sentintothissession-thatis,of thosewhichplacedifficultieswouldshowaconstantrepetition, apatternofproblems.Infact, theyarethepointsonwhichthe CatholicFaithhasbeenassailed always.Iftheycouldbeproved, thenourclaimswouldfalltothe ground;if,ontheotherhand, thereisananswertothem,then ourclaimscanbesubstantiated. Weclaimthatthereisananswer, thatwecangiveareason"forthe faiththatisinus."

Q.:Coulditnotbethatallthe variouschurchesteachthe truthsthatmatterandthatone shouldbecontentwithhisown religion?

A.:Itcanbesaidnodoubtin anyhypothesisthatallchurches possessandteachsomepartofthe truth;andthatiswhatwewould say:Allpossesssomepartofthe commonChristianheritage,but unfortunately,withthegrowthof somanydifferentchurches,not thewholeofit.

Inregardtothesecondpartof Yourquestion:Ifamanisconvincedthatheisontheright trackinhisownchurch,heis servingGodasheseesit.

But.onceagain,ifamanbeginstodoubtthesecurityofhis position.thensurelybeforeGod, heisboundtoseektheTruth.

enceshared,andoldassociationsassometimeshappens.isaheavy sacrifice.Butwheretruthisconcerned,therecanbenowavering; onecannotremainindoubtwhere DivineTruthisatstake.

Toconclude,itisamatterof Faith.Allwecandointhissessionistoexplaintheteachingsof ourChurch,topresentwhatwe dearlybelievetobetheTruth. Afterthatamanmustacceptor rejectaccordingtothedictatesof hisownconscience.

Afadedgreentablecloth,withyellowcorners,diddutyasanante. pendium,andastripofcalico,unhemmed,wastheonlyaltar-cloth. Suchwasthechurchanditsfurniture;yet,poorasitwas,itbore testimonytotheundyingfaithof theIrishCatholicsforitwasthe offeringofafewCatholics.Some gavetheirtimeandlabour,others gavematerials,whileafewgave theirmiteincash.Thereitstood, thechurch,theonlyspotinthat vastcountrywhichtheAlmighty GiverofallhadreservedforHimself,Here.onentering,theSistersfoundnearlyalltheclergy,the youngstudents,andafewloiterers,ledtherebycuriosity.The twonunssettoworkwithawill, endsoontransformedthechurch.

Theroofwasceiledwithwhite calico,thewallsneatlycovered withdevicesformedofbanana leavesandbranchesoftheblackboy. Thecounter-altarwas wellscrubbed,havinganantependiumofwhitenetovercrimson silk,thenetpowderedwithstars ofgoldpapergummedon;abeautifullycleanaltar-cloth,withlong endsmadeduringthevoyage;a veryhandsometabernacle,candlesticks,cruets,altarcharts,sacred vessels,andvestments,allbrought fromLyonsandalloftheverybest description.Norwasthefloorundeservingofnotice.Theboards fcundthere,andothersbroughtby willinghands,werenaileddown firmlyandmadeperfectlyclean.

"Altogether,whenthecandles werelighted,theBishop,clergy andcongregationallintheir places,thechurchpresentedanappearancecharmingandnotsoonto beforgotten.Onthatmemorable firstSunday,theBishopcelebrated PontificalHighMass,withdeacon, sub-deacon,masterofceremonies, andassistantsallintheirappropriatevestments.TheSistersof MercyworeChurchCloaks;Rev, Dom.Salvadopresidedatthe pianoandsang,assistedbysome oftheotherpriestsandstudents. Thechurchwasfilledtoitsutmost capacity;nearlyasmanypersons stoodoutside,findingentranceimpossible.Itwasagreatdayfor thefewCatholicsoftheplace, manyofwhomforyearshadnot seenapriest--theirchildren,never.

"Afullaccountoftheproceedingsappearedinonenewspaperof thetown.Thoughwrittenbya non-Catholic,itwasveryfairly

given.Thewriteraddedslilythat thecongregationoftheChurchof Englandthatdayconsistedofonly threepersons-theclerk,thebellringer,andanoldwoman."

Manyhavebeenaskingwhyour Centenarycelebrationsarebeing heldinthemonthofMay,Apart fromtheconsiderationthatan earliercommemoration,eitherin JanuaryorFebruary,wouldnot suitourdistinguishedvisitorsfrom theEasternDioceses,whocould notcomeduringthosemonths, therearehistoricalreasonswhich makeMaytheidealmonthfor theWest.Letusenumeratethem briefly:-

1.OurFirstBishopConsecrated inMay. InthecollegiatechapelofPropagandainRome,Dr.JohnBrady wasconsecratedthefirstBishopof PerthonMay18,1845.SoourofficialhistoryopensinMay,1845.

2,FirstMayDevotionsinAustralia.

ThedecisiontoopentheCen tenaryCelebrationsonthefirst SundayinMayisahappyone, forourclaimisthatthefirstMay devotionsrecordedinAustralia tookplaceinPerthandwereconductedbytheSistersofMercyin theoriginalchurchwhichstood wheretheChildrenofMaryChapel nowstandsinVictoriaAvenue, acrosstheroadfromtheArchbishop'sresidence.

TheSistersofMercyrenteda cottageonJanuary17,1846,and thisisthefirstConventofMercy inAustralia.Theprofessionof thefirstSisterofMercytookplace inthepro-cathedralonJanuary25. Thefirstschoolconductedbythe SistersofMercyopeneditsdoors onFebruary2nd,withonepupil, theonlyCatholicgirlofschoolage inPerthWithinthreemonths theschoolhadfiftypupils,mostly Protestants.TheMaydevotions broughtbackmanyCatholicsseekinginstructionintheirfaith.

3.DioceseDedicatedtotheImmaculateConception. Duringthepastdecadehehas doubledthenumberoftheDiocesanclergyhehascreated19new parishes,hehasopened25new schools,hehasblessedforworship 33parishchurcesandconventand collegechapels,behasintroduced fivenewreligiouscommunities,he hasestablishedanativemission forhalf-castesatWanderingBook, andaCatholicMissiontoSeamen atFremantle.Thesourceofthis streamofApostolicenergyistobe soughtinhisepiscopalmotto, whichhasbeenabeckoningstar toArchbishopPrendiville:"Da animasceteratolls."

OneofthepropagandadeviceswedwitheffectbyHitler againsttheCatholicChurch wasthatof"politicalCatholicism."Thesameadviceis standardequipmentinthe armouryofprofession)Catholic-baitersinAustralia.The followingarticleontheChristianDemocraticPartiesof Europeexplodesthemyththat theyareunderthethumbof theVatican,andillustrates howtheEuropeanCatholic laityexercisesindependentand autonomousactivityinthe politicalarena.

ThedevelopmentofactiveChristianDemocraticpartiesinEurope isagainraisingforsomethespectreoftheChurchinpolitics,says theSanFrancisco"Monitor."The journalistichabitofreferringto theChristianDemocraticformationsas"Catholicparties"tendsto supportthisview.Theconsequenceisevidentfromcomment ontheresultoftheFrenchelections.Thestrongshowingofthe PopularRepublicans(M.R.P.)led sometoconcludethatafourthof theFrenchelectorateislookingto theVaticanfor"politicalorientation."

Althoughthisisaflattering viewoftheVatican'spower,itis extremelymisleadingoftheChristianDemocraticparties. I.-AUTONOMY.

TheChristianDemocraticpartiesareoftenlookeduponas"denominational"becausethegreat majorityoftheirmembershipconsistsofknownCatholics,manyof whomareactiveinCatholicaffairs,andsomeoftheirleadersin thepasthavebeenCatholicpriests.

Actually.theChristianDemocraticpartiesarenot"denominational"inthesensethattheyare controlledbythe the leadersofboththepartyandthe Churchhaveemphasisedthat ChristianDemocracymustbeindependentand"autonomous."

apoliticalparty.Foritisbasic CatholicteachingthattheChristianfaithassuchdoesnotcompel theadoptionofanyonepolitical form,butleavesmanfreetopursuehispoliticalendsthroughany meansthatareinaccordwith moralityandjustice. AsPopeLeoXIII.wroteinhis Encyclical,"GravesdeComrritmr:"Thelawsofnatureand theGospel,whichbyrightare superiortoallhumancontingencies,arenecessarilyindependentof allmodificationsofcivilgovernment,whileatthesametimethey areinconcordwitheverything thatisnotrepugnanttomorality andjustice.Theyare,therefore, andtheymustremain,absolutely freefrompoliticalpartiesandhave nothingtodowiththevarious changesofadministrationwhich mayoccurinanation."

II-USEOFTERM "CHRISTIAN."

Democrats"

Finally,itiswelltoremember thattheChristianDemocraticpartiesarenottheonlypartiesto whichCatholicscanbelong,and, withthepossibleexceptionofthe NetherlandsCatholicParty,there isnopartyanywherethatcan claimthetotalCatholicvoteofa country.AsinAmerica,Catholics arefreetobelongtoanypartyaccordingtotheirpoliticalconvictions.solongasthatparty:sin accordwithmoralityandjustice.

B:Thesameconcerntomark theindependenceofChristianDemocracyfromtheChurchhasalso beenshownbythePopes.Onthe eveofthefoundationoftheItalian PopularParty(precursorofthe presentChristianDemocratic Party),PopeBenedictXV.twice emphasisedthedifferencebetween thesphereofCatholicActionin publiclife.whichismoralonlyand subjecttotheChurch,andthe politicalactionofCatholics,which isindependent(December,1918, andJanuary,1919).

TOAVOIDCONFUSION.

Toavoidanyconfusion,Don LuigiSturzo,thefounderofthe PopularParty,andmanyofits leaderswithdrewfromtheorganisationofofficialCatholicAction ("theparticipationandthecollaborationofthelaitywiththe ApostolicHierarchy"inthework oftheChurch),aswasnotedby PopePiusXI.inhisdefenceof CatholicActionasnon-political(in theEncyclical,"Nonabbiamobisogno").

III.-MEMBERSHIP.

WhileCatholicscomposethe greatmajorityoftheChristianDemocraticparties,ChristianDemocracyappealsforsupport,noton thebasisofreligion,butonthe basisofitspoliticalprogrammefor theachievementofdemocracy.

INTER-SCHOOLSTOURNAMENT.

TheChristianBrotherspupils werefavouredwithdelightfulweatherfortheirannualtournament heldatNorthPerthtenniscourts onThursday,April18.ThestandardofplaywasaboutthehighestinthehistoryoftheAssociation,andshowsthatthepupilsof ourCatholicCollegesarebeing coachedscientifically.Although thepupilsofC.B.H.S.,Highgate. hadanotherconvincingwin(this wasthefifthinsuccession)most ofthegamesandsetswereclosely contested.TheHighgateboys wontheaggregateshield,alsothe openandunder13sections.but theLeedervilleboys,withsome verypromisingunder15boys, werebestinthatsectionofthe competition.

Probablythemostinteresting matchofthedayoccurredinthe under15section.whentheunder 14Statechampion,LFinnigan, ofHighgate,wasnarrowlydefeatedbyB.Murdoch,ofLeederville.Thestandardinthisgame ,wasparticularlyhighforyoung boys,andheldtheattentionof thespectatorstothelastgame. Respectforreligioninpubliclife isnotadvocated,however.onadenominationalbasis,Thisisevident fromthefactthatinthosecountrieswhicharenotpredominantly Catholic,ChristianDecomcraahas numberedamongitsfollowersJews andProtestantsaswellasCatholics,whichisnowtrue,forinstance,ofM.R.P.inFrance.

Itmustbeadmittedthatthereis,inthiscountry,an amazinganddeplorableapathytowardsthematerialconditionswhichconfrontmillionsofpeopleinEurope.There Laveappearedinthepressaseriesofconflictingviewsas tojusthowbadconditionsare,particularlyrelatingto foodsupplies.Thisisunderstandable,furitmustbea matterofimmensedifficultytoestimatestatisticallythe sufferingsofallEurope.Butfromthestatementsof responsiblepublicfigures,suchasPresidentTruman,Mr. LaGuardia,andMr.R.G.Casey,itisplainthatfamine stalksEastandWest.Thisisnotimetoargueacademically whetherpeoplearemoreorlessstarving.Theyneedfood andnotstatistics.Itisequallyvainandun-Christianto contemplatethatmanyofthosenowstarvingwereour enemiesofyesterday.Forthereis,evenapartfromconsiderationsofChristiancharity,suchathingasthesolidarityofthewholehumanrace.Andevenfromapractical viewofpoliticsitwereextremelyunwisenottomakeevery endeavourtogetfoodtoEuropequickly.Everyoneis nowagreedthatoneofthemostprolificcausesofwaris sownintheaftermathofsuffering,humiliationanddisillusion,whichsuccessivewarsleaveintheirtrain.

IftherewereanyremainingdoubtsastoEurope's positionandtheurgencyofreliefmeasures,theywouldbe quicklydispelledsofarasCatholicsareconcernedbythe anxietyoftheHolyFather,particularlyasregardsthe plightofthechildren.DuringrecentmonthsthePopehas referredt,thismattersofrequentlythatitisclearlyone ofhischiefpre-occupations.Hislatestappealwasmade duringtheweektoCatholicActionists.Afterreferringto "themillionsofchildrennowindangerofstarvation,"the Popesaid:"Godknowshowdeeplywearcconcernedwith theirfate;nevertheless,thedeplorablefaminethreatening infancyandyouthisbutapalereflectionoftheincomparablemiseryoftheirsouls,amiseryspreadingwiderand wider."TheHolyFatherheretouchesonafacetofthe problemwhichistoooftenoverlooked,thatis,thevery realandintimateco-ordinationofthematerialwiththe spiritual.Itisatruthwhichsprings,ofcourse,fromthe verydualityofman'snature.Anditisonewhichthe Churchaloneiscapableofsolving.Butbecausethetwo elementsaresointer-relatedtheymustbedealtwithcon(urrently.HenceitisthatthePopedidnothesitateboth duringthewarandsinceitscessationtobeggarthepapal treasuryinprovidingmaterialreliefforwarvictims.

Onefearsthatthosenationswhichescapedthedirect impactofwararesettlingdowntoapeace-timeroutine withfartooeasyaconsciencerespectingtheirobligations tosocialcharity.ItistruethatU.N.R.R.A.hasdoneand isdoingatremendouslyimportantjobforwhichithas :eceivedthecommendationofthePopeandCardinals.We inAustraliadidsustainonenationaldriveinsupportof andtherehasbeensporadicenthusiasmin sendingfoodparcelstoBritain(whichismerelyhungry andnotstarving).Butasforanysustainedeffort,efficientlyorganisedonarationalbasis,therehassimplybeen nothingofthekind.Australiaisdefinitelynotdoingher shareinbringingpromptrelieftothemillionsofwarvictmsinEuropeandtheEast.Ifpartnershipincrimeis anyconsolation,wemightreflectthatAmerica,bothNorth andSouth,is,asregardsthegeneralrunofthepeople,in asimilarapathy.Thatanyoneshouldliveintheplenitude andcomfortwhichweenjoyinAustraliawhilehalfthe worldisdesperateforfood,clothingandshelter,isan insupportablethoughtandmaywellearnforusalegacyof hatredandcontemptwhichfinewordsandbarrensympathy willnotreadilyeradicate.FortheloveofGod,forthe honourofourcountry,andforourownself-interest,letus feedtheworld'sstarvingmillions!

Thefollowingreviewwouldhaveappearedlastweekbutfor extraordinaryspacedifficulties.Thereviewerdesirestocategoricallyrepudiateasuggestionwhichhasbeenmadeandcirculatedthat hewasthewriterorinstigatorofaletterheaded"PassionWeek Drama,"whichappearedinlastweek'sissueof"TheRecord," abovethepseudonym'ChromeVanadium."Hedoesnoteven knowwhat"ChromeVanadium"means.

OnThursdayandFridayof PassionWeekpeopleofPerth weretreatedtosomethingvery differentinthewayofentertainment.IntherenovatedCathedral Hall,MurrayStreet,atwo-part programmeofreligiouscontent waspresented,themainoffering beingamimedrecitalbyfiveplayersdealingwiththeStationsof theCross.Thefirsthalfofthe programmewasasungversionof thePassion,asrecordedinthe GospelaccordingtoSt.Matthew.

Theopeningnight'spresentation washeldinthedistinguishedpresenceofHisGrace,theArchbishop,accompaniedbyalarge numberoftheclergy.Thelaity filledthehall.Thesecondnight wasalsowellattended.

ForthesecondEasterinsuccessionIhavehadtheprivilegeof witnessinginPerthareligious stagepresentation-Irefertothe memorableproductionbythe ArmylastyearoftheResurrectionplay,"Nicodemus."Itisto behopedthatfurtherventures ofthissortwillbeforthcoming, preferablymoreoftenthanat yearlyintervals.

TheexperimentatCathedral Hallthisyearisdeservingof everyencouragement.Itissomethingofanachievementtohave painstakinglyassembledthebest singingtalentavailableamong bothclergyandlaity,andtohave suddenlythrownthepotential strengthofthecombinedchoir intohighreliefbyfixingthebolus foramomentoftimeinadramaticfocus.Eveniftheexperience beneverrepeated,atleastwe haveforeverthatstrikingpicture -FathersLalor,GoodyandMcGillicuddyintoningthePassion onasecularstageagainstabackgroundofvoicesfromSt.Mary's CathedralChoir.

Theexecutionfellshortofbeing excellent.Idonotpresumeto criticisethesinging,butIwas painfullyawarethatthedramatic qualityofthepresentationwas belowpar.Reasons:lackofatmosphere,indifferencetocorrect stagebearingonthepartofthe performers,undueprominenceof choralpyrotechnics.

Youcannottreatofreligionon thestagewithoutfirstofallcreatinganatmospherefavourableto itsreception.Theveryfirstrequisiteiscompletesilence.Theworld mustbemadestill,ifweareto listentothingsnotofthisworld. Theauditoritim,ontheopening night,atanyrate,wasamildly babblingBabelforfullytenminutesaftertheriseofcurtain; thereafter,thereweresporadic outburstsandirtburstsnotwholly unconnectedwiththepresenceof asurprisingnumberofsmallchildren-andsomenotsosmall. Therewerealsonoisyfanstocontendwith,untiltheywerebelatedlyswitchedoff.Itmightbecounteredthatsuchdistractionsare beyondthecontroloftheproducer,buttheyarenotbeyondthe controlofthecrewmanagingthe frontofthehouse-whichemphasisestheneedforco-ordinating theeffortsofallconcernedwith makingasuccessoftheproduction.Itpositstheessentialvalue ofasingle,competentchiefof staff-aplanner. Butatmospheredoesnotsolely orevenverygreatlydependon controlofexternaldisturbances. Iftheinfluencesradiatingfrom thestagearestrong,thennoises off-stagewillmakelittleornoim-

Twomen(KenandRobert Rogers)andthreewomen(Marcia Hodges,MaryMoirandJoanPerrott)comprisedthecast.Themen easilywerethemoreeffective,becausetheywerenothandicapped bytheelocutionarystylewhichdetractedseriouslyfromthework ofthewomen.ItwasmostunfortunatethattheFirstWoman (MaryMoir)shouldbesuffering especiallyfromthisdreadaffliction,ashermimingwasbothintelligentantigraceful.Marcia Hodges,astheReciter,didnot haveagreatdealtodo.Joan Perrott'svoicewasthemostnaturalofthethree.RobertRogers filledinadequatelywhenrequired, butthebulkoftheworkfellto KenRogers,whoinfusedmasculinityandsincerityintohisroleas FirstMan.

Costumingandlightingwere featuresofthissecondhalfofthe programme,butthelightingarrangementsatCathedralHallare

notyetsufficientlyadvancedto permitofmuchexploitation.The besteffortoftheeveningwasthe impressivetableauatthefinale, whenaninteriorcurtainwas drawntorevealthechoirMidden during"TheWayoftheCross) clusteredatthefootofagiant Crucifix.Thecrosswasilluminated,andtheprincipalplayers werenicelysilhouettedinrecumbentpositionsinthedarkened foreground. Obviouslyalotofworkwas putintothePassionWeekpresentation,andthanksareduetothe producers(FatherAlbertLynch andMissMaryMoir),tothestage manager(Mr.PhilipJackson),and toallotherswhoco-operatedto bringtoPerthpeoplesomething novelandarrestinginthewayof entertainment.Thattherewere shortcomingsisnotsurprising.It wouldbefollytoimaginethatwe hadbuttositonamagiccarpet toattainourends, -DEGUSTIIBUS.

Ahiddenchoirwouldhavebeen infinitelymoreeffectiveinconditioningthemindforajustappreciationofthesungPassion;Irecallwithkeenapprovaltheextraordinarypuissanceofthehidden choirin"Nicodemus."Consider howdistractingitwouldbein churchtohavetolookatthe choirandtheconductor.But apartaltogetherfromthematter ofdistraction,ahiddenchoiris valuablebecauseofanindefinable, mysticalsomethingwhichproceeds fromit.Thisiscertainlytrueof aspiritualdramainatheatre.

Ididnottakekindlytothe soundofplainchantinEnglish. Itjustdidn'tseemright.Plain chantinLatinseemsmorein place,morereverent,moresolemn.

WayoftheCross.

Ithasbeentrulysaidthatof allhorse-racingeventsinthe worldtoday,thereisnonethat hascapturedthepublicattention orcausedmorecontroversythan theEnglishGrandNational Steeplechase,runatAintree, Liverpool.Itisrunoverajourneyoffourmilesand856yards, andthereare30obstaclesor jumpstobenegotiated.Itcan beeasilyseen,therefore,thatthe raceisasupremetest,notonly ofjumpingpowers,butalsoof enduranceandspeed.Itdoesnot greatlysurpriseonetolearnthat intheinterestofcrueltypreventiontheBritishParliamenthas frequentlybeenpetitionedtolegislateagainsttheseverityofthis race.Manypeoplefeelkeenly aboutthissubject,andIcanappreciateandrespecttheirattitude.Ihavemyownviewson steeplechases,butbeforethereaderturnsthepage,Iwouldhastily assurehimthattheywillnotbe recordedhere.Whateverone's viewsonthematterare,Idonot consider"NationalVelvet"will outragehissusceptibilitiesor sendhimcanteringofftothe R.S.P.C.A.tolodgeasternprotest.

"NationalVelvet,"byEnidBagnold,isanenchanting,ifslightly fabulous,storyofalittleSussex girl,VelvetBrown,"the12-yearolddaughterofthevillagebutcher,whowinsanunrulygelding called"ThePie"inaraffle.From thenonheroneobsessionisto enterthehorseintheGrandNationalSteeplechase.Sheisaided byMiTaylor(MickeyRooney),a vagabondex-jockey,whoactsas heradviserandhelperintraining thehorse,andhermother(Anne Revere),whotakesthe100sovereignsshehadwonyearsagofor swimmingtheChannel,andpresentsthemtoVelvettoenable hertoenter"ThePie"inthe greatrace.Filmedwithanintensefeelingforitsexcitement andcolour,theGrandNationalis theclimaxofthefilm.Thespectacularandmostextraordinary fallswhichhavecharacterisedthis raceinthepast,thethrillasthe horsesneartheOpenDitchand Becher'sBrook,theclearingofthe lastjump,andthefinaldesperate struggletothewinningposthave beenbrilliantlyphotographed.

HenriGheon's"Wayofthe Cross"issomethingthatcallsfor alargeamountofsympathetic understandingfromtheaudience. Itisnotaplay,butsimplya dramatizationbymeansofvoice andgestureofthevariousStations oftheCross.TheseStationsare sowellknowntousthatinterest intheplotiskilledinadvance, andthusagreaterresponsibility devolvesontheactorstosnake theirartinteresting.Theyhave toarouseouremotionsandexcite ouradmirationpurelybythe exerciseoftheirhistrionicability. Thistask,asmaybeimagined,is onethatamateurscanonlyac-

Since1245thecolourofred hadbeenchosenfortheCardinals asmostsymbolicoftheundying attachmenttheywerecalledto pledgetotheSeeofPeter;the HolyFatherremindedthemof thisobligationatthemoment whenhegavethemthebadgeof theiroffice,TheirdutiesforGod andHisChurchhold"evenunto blood."

St.PauloftheCross,whowas tobecomethefounderofthe CongregationofthePassionists. wasbornatOvadainPiedmont onMay3,1694.ThisYearwas alsoconspicuousfromthefact thatitalsosawthebirthofVoltaire.PaulFrancis,asbewas called,wastheeldestsonofLuca DaneiandMargaretMassilla,both ofwhomwereexemplaryChristians.

HolyFollies

Attheageoffifteen,afterhearingasermon,heconcludedthat hewasnotfullycorresponding withgraceso,accordingly,after makingageneralconfession,he embarkedonalifeofausterity, sleepingonthebareground,risingatmidnight,spendinghoursin prayerandscourginghimself untilthebloodflowed,OnFridayshewouldeatonlyamorsel ofbreadandwoulddrinkvinegar, towhichhesometimesaddedgall. Inallthesepracticeshewasfaithfullyimitatedbyhisbrother,John Baptist,whowastwoyearshis junior.HewasscarcelyeverseparatedfromJohnBaptistuntil thelatter'sdeathin1765.

PeriodofPrayer.

Thebrotherswereunitedbya bondofloveasrareasitwas beautiful.Inlateryears,after theirordination,theyhadbeen eachother'sconfessors,inflicting penancesandreproofsinturn.

In1714PaulwenttoVenicein responsetoanappealbyPope ClementXI.forvolunteersto fightintheVenetianarmyagainst theTurks.Ayearlaterheobtained hisdischargeafterhavingdiscouveredthatthearmywasnothis vocation.Afterheleftthearmy hespentseveralyearsinalmost unbrokenprayer,whichattimes attainedtothehighestdegreeof contemplation, ANewOrderisBorn. Duringthesummerof1720in threeextraordinarilyvividvisions; hebeheldablackhabitwiththe nameofJesusinwhitecharacters, surmountedbyawhitecrossemblazoneduponthebreast.Onthe thirdoccasion,OurLady,attired inatunic,toldhimthathewas tofoundaCongregation.themembersofwhichwouldwearthat habitandwouldmourncontinuallyforthepassionanddeathof herSon.

'Awrittendescriptionofthese visionswassubmittedtothe BishopofAlessandria,whoconsultedseveralspiritualguides,includingPaul'sformerdirector. theCapuchinFatherColumban ofGenoa.Inviewoftheheroic lifeofvirtueandprayerledby theyoungmansincehischildhood,allagreedthatthecallmust havecomefromGod.TheBishop thereforeauthorisedhimtofollow hisvocationandinvestedhim withtheblackhabit,stipulating, however,thatthebadgewasnot tobewornuntilpapalapproval hadbeenobtained.Paulthenretiredforfortydays'retreat.and duringthissojournhedrewupa seofrultes,whicharesubstantially theregulationsfollowedbythe Passionistsoftoday.

ReverseatRome.

Afterspendingashorttimein theneighbourhoodofCastellazzo, renderingassistancetothelocal clergybycatechisingthechildren andgivingmissionswhichwere verysuccessful,hedecidedtoobtainthehighestsanctionforhis work.Bareheaded,barefoot,and penniless,hesetoutforRome. UponhisarrivalattheVatican hewasturnedawayasabeggar, ashehadnotthoughtofprovidinghimselfwithanintroduction orwithcredentials.Heaccepted thisrebuffasasignthathishour hadnotcome.

ZealandAusterity. He,however,atasubsequent attemptwasgrantedanaudience bythePope,andonthisvisitto theHolyCityhewasordainedto thesacredministry.Fromthat timeonwardsheenergetically labouredforhisnewOrder.Althoughalmostinsuperabledifficultieshaltobefaced,thefame IofthePassionists,oftheirmissions,andausterity,soonspread

throughoutItaly.St.Paulhimselfevangelisedinpersonnearly everytowninthePapalStates,as wellasagreatpartofTuscany.

PapalApprobation.

Thenewinstitutehadbeen workingunderthetermsofthe approbationgrantedbyBenedict XIVin1741,butin1769itreceivedfromClementXIVthe finalsolemnauthorisationwhich placeditonthesamefootingas otherapprovedreligiousorders. Duringthelatterpartofhislife Paulwasmuchpreoccupiedby arrangementsfortheestablishmentofanOrderofPassionist nuns.Aftermanydisappointments,thefirstHousewasopened atCornetoin1771,butthefounderwasnotwellenoughtobepresent,nordidheeverseehisspiritualdaughtersintheirhabit.The SaintdiedinRomeonOctober18, 1775,attheageofeighty.His bodyliesintheChurchofSS. GiovanniandPaolo.Intheadjoiningcloisteristheroomin whichhedied-nowconverted intoachapel.

Therewasagoodattendanceat thelastmeetingofStPatrick's whenBro.Secretaryreportedhe hadmadearrangementstohave aMasssaidforthelateSisterCoffer.TheDistrictBoardreported thattheCathedralWomen's Branchwasbeingclosedand memberswerebeingtransferred tootherBranchesoftheirown choice,andforwardedclearances forthosewhowishedtojoinSt. Patrick's.Altogether22names wereplacedonthebooks.mostof whomweremembersoflong standing.SatisfactionwasexpressedattheactionoftheF.S. HospitalFundinamendingthe rulestoprovidethatmembers will,notwithstandingsocialservicesbytheGovernment,receive thesameamountofhospitalbenefitasbefore.AsHelpofChristiansBranchwillattendonQuarterNight,May13th,forcompetitions,itwasdecidedtocommence themeetingat7.30.Regaliawill bedistributedtomemberspresent atnextmeeting.29th.whowill takepartintheCentenarygreat eventatSubiacoOval.

SisterK.PalmerandBro.K. Fitzsimmonsweredulyinitiated andwelcomedbythePresident.
