Switzerlandiskeenlyanxiousto jointheUnitedNations.provided itcanretainitscherishedneutrality.Swedenhasdiscussedthe questionofmembershipinitsParliamentbutseemstohavereached nodecision.Portugalhasnotsaid aword.Spainwillneverbeadmitted,accordingtoaresolution ofthecurrentAssembly,aslongas "thepresentregime"isinpower. VaticanCityisinnohurrytojoin andmayevenmakeitplainthat itfeelsitisnotexpedienttojoin.
ThereremainsIreland,probably themostconspicuousneutralof thewar.WhatweretheIrish thinkingaboutthebusinessgoing onatLondon?Wouldtheyjoin soon?Wastheirwartimeneutralitysignofadeterminationtoremainalooffromtheproblemsand sufferingsthatwillfacethepostwarworld?
Thefollowinglinesaremerely jottingstakendownafteratoohurriedtriptoEireandNorthern Ireland.Thepurposeofthesefew daysofabsencefromtheUnited Nationswastogetofficialand semi-officialattitudesonquestions relatedtotheLondongathering. Thisisnotageneralreporton Eire.
EamondeValera,theTaoiseach, orPrimeMinister,hasnevermade himselfinaccessibletojournalists. NordidIfindthathemadeany exceptioninmycase.Quitethe contrary.But,unfortunatelyfor thejournalist,Mr.deValerahas neverallowedhimselftobe quoted,sincethebeginningofthe war.Hehasreservedhispublic statementstohimself.Manyof these,likehisfamousreplyto Churchill,havebeenmasterpieces. Icaneasilyimaginethatmanya correspondenthaswishedhecould gettheexclusiverightsonaDe Valerastatement.Butthey,like myself,hadtosendbackgeneral pieceswhich,howevereuthentic, lackedthepunchthatonlya straightDeValerastatementcould have.
Eireisinnohurrytojointhe UnitedNations,Thisdoesnot comefromanYdislikeoftheprinciplesofinternationalorganisation.Inaspeechdeliveredon
May20,1945,whiletheSanFran ciscoConferencewasunderway, Mr.DeValerasaid:"Weinthe pasthavegivenfulladherenceto theseprinciplesandwereoneof themostloyalmembersoftheold LeagueofNations.Sowearepreparedtobecomealoyalmember ofanynewleaguethatmaybe formedforcollectivesecurity,ifit promisestobeaneffectiveinstrumentforpeaceandaccordsallnationsafundamentalequalityof right:' TherecordofIrishparticipation intheLeagueofNationsissufficientlycleartoleavenodoubt thatthisstatementoftheTaoiseachisnotjustaformulatocover upabasiclackofsympathyfor theideaoforganisedco'eperation amongnations.Butitisadifferentmatterwhenitcomestothe actualquestionthatIputtothe politicalleadersImetinDublin: DoesEireintendtojointhe UnitedNations?Thegeneralattitudecurrentlyadoptedbythe IrishGovernmentisoneofwatchfulwaiting.Fromitsviewpoint thereisnoexistingreasonthat compelsimmediateapplicationfor membership.
Firstofall,theIrisharenot surethattheywillbewelcome. Theypointtothefactthatthe UnitedNationshasyettoissuea generalappealtotheneutrals,or togiveanyformalorinformalindicationthatnewmembersare sought,intheEmeraldIslethey feelthattheUnitedNations shouldmakeitscharactermore fullyknownthanisdiscernibleat present.Inacertainsensethey feelthatitisnottheybutthe UnitedNationswhoareontrial beforethebarofworldopinion.
Sincethebeginningsofthenew organisationweredeliberatelylimitedtothosewhohaddeclaredwar ontheAxis,theyfeelthattheburdenofmakingitworkdoesnot restwiththefewneutralswho werethusindirectlyexcluded. RegionalDefenceProblem.
Therearesomeveryparticular questionsthattheIrishwouldlike toseeansweredbeforetheyundertaketheobligationsofmembership,Forinstance.theycasta verydubiouseyeindeedonthe programof"regionaldefence" whichformsakeypartoftheenforcementprovisionsoftheCharter.Bythetermsofthisdocument,allmembersobligatethemselvestoprovide"forces,facilities andotherassistance"totheSecurityCouncilintheexecutionof itsdecisions.ForEireitisvery clearwhatthose"facilities"would mean.Theyaretheportsandbases whichtheyhadconsistentlydeniedtothewarringUnitedNations,evenundertheseverestkind ofmoralandmaterialpressure, Theimportanceofsuchportsand basestoBritainhasbeensoclearly emphasisedthattheIrishtakeit

Thiswouldbeareversalofthe standtheytookduring'thewar. Untilthepartitionissueissettled totheirsatisfaction,theIrish seemtothinkthattheyhavemore tolosethantheywouldstandto gainfromjoiningtheUnitedNations.

ToescapethechargeofindifferencetohumansufferingEirecould easilyallegethatricher,more populous,countriesshouldundertakethetaskratherthananation thathadbeenitselfundervery limitedrationsforsixyears.

Thevisitorfromacountrythat hasbeenabelligerentisnaturally curioustodiscoverwhetherthe IrishhaveanYregretsformain tainingtheirneutralityduringthe war.Iaskedanumberofpeople thatquestion.TheanswersIgot wereemphatic.Ifanything,the Irishfeeltheyhavesavedthem-wivesfromcontaminationbykeepmgoutofaconflictthatended withmanymoralcompromises.I wastoldagainandagainthatthis neutralitywasnotsomethingimposedfromontopbutsprangup :rombelow,fromthepopulardemand.Anypublicleaderwho sponsoredanotherpolicywas courtingpoliticaldisaster.The sixpartiesinthetwogeneralelectionsof1943and1944wereunanimousonthispoint.TheFianna Fail,FineGael,Labour,National Labour,ClannNaTalmhanand theIndependentseachallegedthat itwastheirprogramthathad madeneutralitypossible.De Valera'ssupportersdelightatthis pointtoremindyouthatCosgrave wascompelledonJuly17,1941,to repudiatethesuggestionofthe thenvicepresidentofFineGael, J,M.Dillon,thatperhapsEire shouldenterthewar.Thatthe vice-presidentoftheopposition partyhadtoresignaftersucha statementisgivenasdramatic evidencethatneutralitywasnota creationofDeValera'sstubbornness,AmericanandBritishnewspaperstothecontrarynotwithstanding.
Eire'sattitudetowardthenecessitiesofhumanbeingsinstricken Europeisabetterwayofjudging Irishneutrality.AChristiancountrycannotallegepoliticalreasons fornotpractisingChristiancha-

Eiredoesnotbelongto U.NR.R.A.Hercharitableefforts havebeenherownandarebeing carriedonwithoutinternational publicityButofficialsatGovernmentBuilding,Dublin,liketo pointoutthatwhereasU.N.R.R.A. asksitsmemberstocontribute onlyonepercentofthenational income,Eirehasdonebetter. Eire'sannualincomeisapproximatelyM50,000,000-aboutonebilliondollars.Shehasalreadycontributed£3,000,000towarrelief. MindfulofthefactthatEirea overwhelminglyCatholic,Iasked aprominentleaderoftheFianna Failparty,whichhas76seatsin theDail,whetherhedidnotthink thathisgovernmentshouldjoin theUnitedNationsatonceforthe reasonthatitwouldthusbeina positiontoadditsvoiceonbehalfofChristianprinciples.Ilia answerwasthatnodoubtevena smallnation,byeloquentlyinvokingtheprinciplesofjustice,could powerfullyaffectthecourseofan internationalassembly.Asfor Eire,otherconsiderationsenterin. Firstofall.shewouldhavetobecomeamember,andthatunder circumstancesthatwerehonourableandinharmonywithhernational RutwhenI pressedhimonthedutyofCatholicstotakepartinsuchinternationalgatherings,hereplied:"That istrue,butCatholicsintheUnited Statesareinadifferentposition fromCatholicsinEire,asthe UnitedStatesisinadifferentpositionfromEireitself.Yourcountrycandomorethanraiseits voice.Youcandomorethantalk. Youcaneffectgooddecisionsand preventbadones."Iswouldassumefromthisstatementthathe didnotthinkCatholicsabroad needtaketheircuefromwhatIrelanddoesandthinksinthematter oftheUnitedNations.

DeValerahadimposedarigid censorshipduringthewar."No wondertheIrishdidn'tgotowar againsttheNazis.Theynever knewaboutBelsenorBuchenwald.
DeValerawouldntletthem know."Thatiswhattheytold me.TothatstatementIamnot attemptingananswer.Theaccusedcandefendthemselves.But whatevertheanswer,itwillbe forthcomingwithoutbitternessor rancour.Eire'sleadersrespe^t Americaandseekherfriendship. Theylooktothe-UnitedStates toprovidetheworldtheChristian leadershiptheworldneeds.That mayseemstrangetohearcoming outofHolyIreland,butthatis whatwassaidtome.
TheeffortsofEiretodoits shareinrelievinghumanneeds arisingastheaftermathofwar, anditspre-warrecordasanactive memberoftheLeagueofNations, leavenodoubtthatthepeopleare awareoftheirinternationalresponsibilities.Butherpresent politicalleadersentertaindoubts aboutthebasicstructureofthe UnitedNations.Oneofficialtold mehewasinfavourofanorganisation,withoutprivilegedPowers whicharebeyondthelawbSreasonofvetorights.Iaskedhim whathethoughtabouttheprincipleofabsolutesovereignty.His answertothisquestionwasthat hedidnetcaretoemphasisethe wordsovereigntybutthathedid.

AlmostthreeyearsagoIwas workingatacementmanufacturingfirm,afewmilesfromPerth. Iwasalaboratoryassistant,and mydutiesweretotestsamplesof thevariousingredientsandmixtureswhichareusedinthepreparationofcement,withcertainacidsandalkalies.The sampleswertobtainedfrom differentsectionsofthefactory-andsothe"lab"man,by hisfrequentvisits,soonbecame wellknownamongstalltheemployees.Themanufactureofcement,beingacontinuousprocess, employsmenthewhole24hours, andsothethree-shiftsystemoperates.
SometimesIwasonnightshift; othertimesdayorafternoonshift. Iratherlikedtheafternoonshift, 3p.m.to11p.m.,becauseitleft mymorningsfree,andIcould thengotoHolyMassandHoly Communioneveryday(andIam happytosayIdidgodailywhen Ihadthisopportunity).Onthe dateofmyaccident,5thAugust, 1943IalsowenttoConfession aboutmid-day,inpreparationfor the"FirstFriday"(August6th). about8p.m.onAugust5Iwent downtoasectionofthefactory knownastheRawMillDepartment,toobtainasamplefortesting.Thisdepartmentisahuge shedcontainingthreetubular mills-ironcylinders50ft.longand 6ft.indiameter;loadedwithiron pebbles,andwhenoperatingrevolverapidly,themotivepower beingelectricity.Therawmaterials(oystershell,limestoneand bauxite'entertherevolvingmills throughanapertureandare speedilyreducedtoafinepowder bythemovingironpebbles thoroughlymi.:ed,afterwardspassingthroughafinesieveandon toabeltconveyer.Thenoisefrom thesetubularmillswasdeafening, andordinaryconversationwith theworkmenthereanimpossibility,soIusuallyrecordedthe resultofmytestsoraskedforinformationbychalkingthemessageonablackboard.providedfor thispurpose.Afterseeingtheraw n'.illforemanandtellinghim(per blackboard)thatIwasgoingto getasample,Imountedtwo flightsofstairs,andthisbrought meontoaplatformsome27feet abovegroundlevel,andabout12 feetabovethetopoftherevolvingmills,butapproximately20 feetdistant.Evenherethenoise fromthemillsiwasadullroar.It wasafairlydarknight:nomoonlight,andtherewerenoclouds, butafewstarsweretwinkling brightly.Owingtowartimelightingrestrictionsand"black-out" regulations,therewasonlyone smallelectriclight,andthiswas coveredwithathickshade,sothat onlyasmallportionoftheplatformwaswithintheradiumof illumination:theremainderwasin darkness.Beneaththeplatform werethreebigconcretetanks,circularinshape,eachninefeetdeep andeightfeetindiameter,and theycontainedaliquidcalled "slurry,"whichisamixtureof powderedlimestone,oystershell, bauxite(areddishsortofclay) andwater,thewaterbeingabout 50percent.andthesolidmatter thesame,Itwasthis"slurry" whichIhadtosampleandtestin thelaboratory.Tokeepthesolid matterfromsinkingtothebottom ofthetank,theliquidhadtobe constantlystirred,andthiswas donebythreeheavyironblades whichwerefastenedtoaspindle whichpassedthroughthecfntre ofthetank.Anelectricmotor causedthespindletorevolve.The bladeswereaboutsixincheswide andsetonthespindleatdifferent depths,thelowestthreefeetfrom thebottom,themiddleoneabout fivefeet,andthetoponeabout onefootbelowtheplatformlevel. Eachblademadeacompleterevolutiononceinsixseconds.Access toeachtankwasthroughanopen trapdoortwofeetthreeinches wide,andtheliquid"surry"was testedandinspectedsofrequently bylaboratoryassistantsandworkmenoftheRawMillDepartment
thatthedoorswerealwaysleft open;infact,theywerefastened backwithhooks.Weallknew thedoorswereopen,bothdayand night,andthismadeusmore carefulwhenwalkingacrossthe platform.Andyet,onthatparticularnight,August5,1943,on thedarkestpatchoftheplatform, myfootplungedthroughtheopen trapdoorintothewhirling"slurry"tankbeneath.Quickasaflash, myhandsgrabbedtheedgeofthe boardsoftheopening,butbefore Icoulddrawmyselfoutofthe tankontotheplatformthetop bladeinitsrevolution(everysix seconds)draggedmeintothe whirlingmassoffrslurryilfOf course,Iinstinctivelyshoutedfor help,butrealisedalmostimmediatelythattherewaslittlechance ofhumanaid.Whocouldhearme abovethedeafeningroarofthe tubularmillsintheshedbelow? No!OnlyGodcouldgetmeout ofthisscrape.Onlyamiracle couldsavemefromdeath.AsI knewhowtoswim,Ispreadout myarmsandbeganatreadingactionwithmyfeet,whichbrought metothesurface.Iwasbeing cruelybangedaboutbytheiron blades.IprayedtoGodthenasI neverprayedbefore."DearLord, helpme;dearJesus,saveme.I don'twanttodielikethis."And nowmyfeetwerecaught-caught betweenthebladeandthetank wall.Iiwaslosingstrength.I struggledfeeblytokeepmyhead abovethesurface.Againmydying cry,"DearJesus,helpme.Dear Jesus .''Andthenthewaters closedover'myhead,theroarof themillsbelowfadedaway.A mentalactofcontrition-"Iam very,verysorry" andthenI seemedtosinkdownanddown. Nextmonth,fromMay4toMay 9,theCatholicChurchinWestern AustraliawillcelebratetheCentenaryoftheArchdioceseofPerth; in1846thefirstBishop,theMost Rev.JohnBrady,tookpossession ofhisrecentlyfoundedDiocese. Notthathewasanewarrival; alreadyhebelongedtoWestern Australia.InresponsetoarequestfromCatholicsresidentin Perth,hehadbeenappointed VicarGeneraloftheSwanRiver settlement,byDr.Polding,ArchbishopofSydney.Accompaniedby Fr.Joostens,aDutchpriest,and PatrickO'Reilly,ayoungIrish Catechist,hesetoutfromNew SouthWales,and,afterabrief stayatAlbany,onthewas,arrivedatFremantleonDecember8, 1843,atPerthonDecember13. (Thesedatesformaninteresting commentaryondistancesandon themodeoftravelofthosedays.)
Soonafterwards,FatherBrady journeyedtoEuropetoseekaid forhismission,especiallytoseek missionariestoadministertothe needsoftheaborigines,andwhile inRomewasappointedfirst BishopofPerth,andconsecrated onMay18,1845,intheChurchof theCollegeofPropaganda.He sailedagainfrc:nEnglandinSeptemberofthatsameyearanddisembarkedatFremantleonJanuary8,1946.Thusitisthatwe celebratetheCentenaryofthe Diocesethisyear.
Onhisreturnjourney,the Bishopwasaccompaniedbyamissionaryband,thecompositionof whichcallsforsomecomment.
Fononething,itwasthemost numerousmissionarystafftoarriveinAustraliauptothattime; thereweresevenpriestsbesides theBishop,aSub-Deacon,novices, lay-brothers,eightcatechists,and agroupofnuns.
TwoSpanishpriestsamongthe missionaries-Dom,Serraand Dom.Salvado-weregiventhe taskoffoundingoneofthetwo proposedmissionstoaborigines. OnMarch1 1846,theylaidthe foundationoftheirmissiononthe siteselectedforthemissions,to whichtheygavethenameofNew Norcia.Sothatnextmonth,immediatelyafterthePerthcelebrations,theBenedictineMonkswill celebratetheCentenaryofthe foundationofNewNorcia.
ThenunsintheBishop'sparty weresixSistersofMercyfromSt. Leo'sConventinCarlow,Ireland, withonenovicefromthesame community.Theywerethepioneermembersofthecommunity foundedatVictoriaSquare,and thatfoundation,too,willbecommemoratedduringtheCentenary celebrationsinPerth.
WiththeappointmentofFr. BradytotakechargeoftheSwan Riversettlement,thefirstperiod inthehistoryoftheCatholic ChurchinWesternAustraliabegan;thepioneerperiod,ThenumberofCatholicswassmall,theresourcesmeagre.
WhenFr.BradyandhiscompanionsarrivedinPerthin1843 theyfoundonlyafewscattered Catholicfamilies.In1844,ina reporttoArchbishopPolding,Fr. Joostensstatedthatachurchhad beenerected,capableofholdinga hundredandfiftypeople,andthat aschoolhadbeenopened,at whichbetweentwentyandthirty childrenattendeddaily.
Inacensustakenin1848,the numberofcolonistsinWestern Australiawasshownas4,600,and ofthese306onlywereCatholics.
However,theworkwasbegun.
OnDecember27,1843,thefoundationstonewaslaidofachurch, destinedtobesoonthefirstCathedral.Itwasthehumblestructure referredtobyFr,Joostensinhis report,andstillstandsinVictoria Avenueasamonumenttothose earlydays,tothefirstBishopand todevotedmembersofhispioneer missionaryband.

AccordingtoanAssociatedPress reportrecentlyquotedinourdaily press,MoscowRadiohasannouncedthat"theWesternUkraineChurchCongressatLwow hasinformedGeneralissimoStalin that,afterthreehundredandfifty years'affiliationwithRoman Catholicism,WesternUkraine churcheshaverenouncedallegiance totheVatican,anddecidedtoreunitewiththeRussianOrthodox Church.Thechurchesaresituatedinaregionwhichformed partofPolandbefore1939."This briefnewsitemannouncesanew successforStalininhiswestward driveandbolshevisationofEasternEurope.Notcontentwith annexingalargesliceofPoland, indefianceoftheprinciples ofthenowforgottenAtlantic Charter,Stalinhasnotonlyoverthrownitspoliticalandsocial order,buthasnowdestroyed itsreligiousstructureandtradition.Readersofthesecular papershaveheardlittleofStalin's persecutionoftheCatholicChurch inEasternEurope.WhiletheRed propagandamillshavebeengrindingoutthefamiliarlegendsof freedomofreligioninRussia, Stalin'ssecretpolicehavebeen busypersecutingCatholicBishops andpriestsandbringingincreasingpressureontheUniateCatholicstobreakawayfromthePope.
Itwasagainstthiscalculated campaignbytheSoviettostamp outCatholicisminRussia'sstolen domainsthatHisHolinessthe Popeissuedhis10,000-wordEncYc Bealonthepersecutionofthe RuthenianCatholics("Orientales OmnesEcclesias,"Dectmber23, 1945).TheEncyclical,whichwas ignoredbytheAustralianpress, saveforalineortwointhecables, wassummarisedin"TheAdvocate"ofFebruary6,1946, Stalin'scatspawinhiscampaign todestroytheCatholicChurchin EasternEuropeisthePatriarch Alexei,oftheOrthodoxRussian ChurchinMoscow.Theatheist andanti-ChristianStalinisusing AlexeiandtheOrthodoxChurch toassisttheRussianCommunist Party'sPan-Slavicprogramme.Apparently,thepressureandpersecutionofStalin'ssecretpolicy againsttheCatholicChurchin EasternPoland,nowpartofthe Soviet,hassucceeded.But,when thetruthissoonerorlaterrevealed,wehavenodoubtthatthe Catholicworld'willlearnthatthe realleadersoftheChurhinthat unhappylandhavebeenliquidatedandsomekindofecclesiastial"Lublinjunta"hascalledthe schismandjoinedupwithStalin's OrthodoxChurch.

Theyear1829usheredinthe modernageofreligiouslibertyin GreatBritain.InthatyearGeorge IVsignedtheCatholicEmancipationBill,abolishedalllawsagainst Catholics.
Todayfreedomofworshipisreal andcompleteinBritain,andin theBritishCommonwealthand theEmpire.Theclauseinthe Coronationoath,whicheverysovereignsincetheseventeenthcenturywasrequiredtorecite,declaredhisdisbeliefintheMass, wasabolishedbyParliamentin 1910.
Itisestimatedthattowardsthe endoftheeighteenthcentury CatholicsinEngland,Scotland andWaleshaddwindledtoabout 6C,000,oroneinevery150ofthe population.TodayCatholicsin England,ScotlandandWales number3,021,000,including7,106 priests,i.e.,slightlyoveronein16 ofthepopulation.
AtthebeginningofthenineteenthcenturyCatholicleadershipinEnglandlargelyinthe
handsoflandedgentryandnobility,wasextremelyconservative. Asthecenturyproceededand Catholicsbecamemorenumerous inurbandistrictstheybeganto takealargerpartinpublicaffairs.

In1850WestminsterwasestablishedasanArchdiocese,with 15suffraganSees.Sincethatyear therehavebeensix'Archbishops, allcreatedCardinals.Cardinal Griffin,whosucceededthelate CardinalHinsleyisthesixth.He servedintheRoyalNavalAir ServiceandtheR.A.F.during WorldWar1afterwvdsstudying attheEnglishCollegeinRome. Hehasalwaysbeenactivein labourandsocialmovementslike CardinalManningoneofhispredecessorsintheSeeofWestminsterapioneerofsocialjusticein Victoriandays.
InfactCardinalManningwas inclosetouchwithLeoXIII whiletheEncyclical"RerumNovarum'wasinpreparation.CardinalGriffinhasalwaysbeena strongsupporteroftheCatholic SocialGuildandtheCatholic Workers'CollegeatOxford.
'In1911Englandwasdivided intothreeecclesiasticalprovinces --WestminsterBirminghamand Liverpooltowhichafourthfor Wales(Cardiff),wasaddedin 1916.EnglandandWalesnow havefourArchbishopsand14 Bishops,andtheHierarchyisrecognisedasanimportantfactorin nationallife, TheCatholicChurchinScotland isaseparateadministrativeunit fromthatofEnglandandWales. WhatmustmostimpresstruthseekingpeopleabouttheSpanish questionisthatitisonlyRussia andherstoogeswhoarepressing thematter,andwehavehadall toomanyinstancesoftheulterior motivesofCommunism.Britain and'America,whichrepresentthe realdemocraticoutlook,refuse consistentlytobeusedaspawns inthegameofbatteringFranco. Spainherselfisactingandspeakingwithadignityandrestraint befittingherfinesttraditions.It isquiteaneducationtocontrast hertonewiththeblaringand rantingofMoscow'sradioand press.ButabovethedinofRed propagandacomesthewailof Persia.Apparentlybrow-beaten intooilconcessionstoRussia,Persiaisnowtobe"persuaded"to withdrawherplaintfromU.N.O. beforetheevacuationoftheSoviet'saggressiveforces.Itisto Australia'shonourthatherdelegatehasledtheoppositionto suchsecretandshiftytactics. Thereisroomformorethana fearthatRussiaonceagaindoes notintendtofulfilherplighted word.
ButrecentlyinSydney,ata meetingoftheN.S.W.branchesof theScientificWorkersandthe FederationofScientificandTechnicalWorkerstherewerepa-ssPd resolutionsadvocatingthesharing ofatomicenergysecretsanddeploringthearrestsofscientistsin CanadaandBritainforthedisclosureofsecretinformationtoa foreignpower.
Thedebateasreportedinthe pressreadlikeachapterofthe Dunciad.Certaingentlemenit seemsaremoreinterestedinwhat happensincyclotronsthanin whathappenedinNagasakiand Hiroshima.ButWhatconcerns thecommonpeopleoftheworld isnottheadvanceofscientific knowledgebutitsapplicationto theirwelfare.Scientistsstillpromiseusagoldenage,butintne businessofnuclearenergythey haveasYetdemonstratedonlythe meansofhorriblemassdestruction.Theyareconcernedthat scienceshallbefree,weareconcernedthatitshallnotbelunatic orcriminalandtothatendwe shouldliketoseethemostwatertightrestrictionsonthevagaries ofscience.Thereisprevalenta mostalarminglackofresponsibilityinmenofscienceandif theywillnotdisciplinethemselves byaChristianmorality,theymust becontrolledfromwithoutinthe commonwealofthepeoplesofthe earth.

GeneralMacArthur'smessage wasinresponsetoaletteraddressedtohimbyBishopTaguchi, anativeofJapan,whoexpressed gratitudetotheSupremeCommander."ThankstoYourExcellency's religiouspolicy,"theBishop'slettersaid,"weCatholicsofJapan areenjoyingperfectfreedomof faithandreligiouspracticeforthe firsttimesinceStFrancisXavier, theApostleofJapan,cameto preachtheGospel400yearsago."
ThecultofscienceworShIp whichbeganinthelastcentury could,untilrecently,beregarded asamisguided,enthusiasm.Its formofaboldattachmentto thighbonesandteethofadubious agewhoseexistencewassomehow supposedtohaveknockedthe 'wholescienceoftheologycockeyed.Itwasquitetheaccepted thingtobegravelyassuredby scienceundergraduatesthatevolutionhadoulsteidGenesisand thatsomehowbecauseGodhad chosentodothingsslowlyinstead ofquicklythatprovedconclusivelyHedidn'texist,Well,we sufferedallthatinacheerful spirit.IthadgotpasttheYawningstage.Buttherewerealways afewintrepidspiritswhose scienceleanedtowardsmutilation ordestruction.Therewerethe eugenistswhobelievedmenshould beculledoutlikecattleandthat whatyoucouldn'tmendyou shouldend.Theyweresupported bytheeuthenasiastswhofavoured puttingeveryoneelse'sgrandmotherinthegaschamber,providedonlythatthisshouldnot bedonebyGermans.Further, itshouldbedoneinlaboratories andnotinconcentrationcamps.
Well,wedidn'ttakethisbrood veryseriouslyeither,mainly,I suppose,becauseweknewthatin apersonalsensetheirtheory wouldalwaysbeagooddealmore advancedthantheirpractice.Oh, yes,andtherewasthatothertribe ofpurveyorsof"scientific"knowledgewhotaughttheyoung peopleofournationhowtodestroythemselvesthroughcontraception.Buteventhosewho practiseditknewthisforadirty tradeandeventhepoliticians weremovedtomakepartialrestrictionsuponit.
Describingthepresenttimeas "thisprovidentialmoment,"Bishop Taguchiexplainedinhisletter thattheChurchlacksalmostevery meanstofulfilitstaskandasked co-operation,asfaraspossible,in thereconstructionofdestroyed churches,schoolsandreligiousinstitutions.

GoingevenfartherthantheNazi regime.theCommunist-dominated municipalgovernmentoftheGern.ancapitalhasseenfittobanall religiousinstructionfrompublic schoolcurricula.Sincetheopeningofthenewscholasticyear, suchinstructioncanonlybeimpartedoutsideofregularschool hours.Teachersdonotreceive creditforextra-curriculareligious instruction.Thedecisionwastaken withoutconsultationwiththe ecclesiasticalauthorities.

ThishappenedinWurzburg, Germany.AnAmericansoldier wasstandingguardoutsideatremendoushospitalinwhichanumberofS,S.trooperswereconvalescingafterhavingbeenseriously wounded.Hehadbeenoverseas formorethantwoyears,andwas dreamingofthedaywhenhe wouldreturnhometohisfamily.
SuddenlyanotherGIdroveup andhandedacablegramtothe soldieronguard.ItwasaRed Crossmessage,announcingthe deathofhisfatherafewdaysbefore.Fatherandsonhadbeen Eeryclose.andtheguardbroke intotearsastheshockofthenews camehometohim.Then,looking upatthemanwhohadbrought themessage,hesaid: "Willyoudomeafavour?Come withmeintothatchapelacross thestreet."
Stationinganothersoldierathis guardpost,heledthewayintothe chapel.Thetwomenkneltdown inoneofthepews,andtheone whohadlosthisfatherbeganthe Rosary.Theotheranswered.When thelast"GlorybetotheFather" wasfinishedtheygenuflectedand leftthechapel,andthebereaved soldiertookoverhispostagain.

'But,asaplay,"TheTwoMrs. Carrolls"fallsshortofbeingexcellentbyreasonofanincredibly stupidthirdact.Uptothispoint allhasgonevery'well.Thenwith shockingsuddennesstheveilof realismisrentintwoinanunbelievableten-minutefinaleactionpackedwithmelodrama.The playwright,MartinVale,certainly weakenedbadlyinthestraight.
TheActing. DorothyKrantzasSallyCarroll putupaverygoodperformance, (whichremainedconvincinguntil shewascaughtintheabsurd whirlpoolofAct111Corneredin 'thebedroom,shedidnotreact realistically.EasilythemostvaluablequalitypresentinhercharacterstudyofSallywasthesuperb feelingevincedintoneandgesture fortheundertonesoftragedy. RayAngel.asthe"baby-faced" killer,wasdebonairandsmooth, butnotsinisterenough.The finaleprovedacalamityforhim, too.
Agoodcomicalbitwasturned inbyGlenLilley,asDr.Tuttle, KathleenPorter,JuneHarvey, MarieBeeckandDoug.McPhersonwereadequateinsupporting roles.Thesurpriseoftheevening wasthehigh-classperformanceof LlonaWilliams,whosemake-up, dictionandgeneraldeportment wereexcellent.

HewastheeldestsonofJames Canis,whohadbeenennobled afteractingastutortothesons oftheDukeofLorraine,andwho wilsninetimesBurgomasterof Nymwegen.AlthoughPeterhad themisfortuneto'losehismother atanearlyage,hisfather'ssecond wife,WendelinedeBurgh,proved anexcellentstepmother,andhe grewupinapiousCatholichome. Inthefirstplace,theuncloaked headofthenarratorwasentirely outofplaceinevenasemi-liturgicalpresentation.Aformalcoveringofthemantillatypewould havebeensufficienttohaveavoidedtheglaringcontrastwiththe coveredheadsoftherestofthe cast,thoughthefrontalcoiffures of'bothFirstandSecondWomen wereverymuchinevidence.The coveringofthesewasasacrifice whichmightwellhavebeenmade forart.
Almosteverythingdependedon voices.Herecuriouslyenoughthe lessskilledmalevoicesshowedto betteradvantagebyvirtueofintensesincerity.Thepolishedennunciationofthewomen,all trainedelocutionists,tendedto overshadowdepthofexpression andfeeling.Allthevoicescould, however,beheardclearlyatthe backofthehall.
Theproblemofmovementin thisworkisadmittedlydifficult andattimesplayerswereinclined towanderalittlevaguely.This workhasbeendoneseveraltimes byaCatholicsocietyintheEast andwhatisvirtuallyaballet formhasbeenworkedout.This isaninterestingrevivalofthe religiousdance,anartformof ,.eryearlyChristiantimes.
Averyfineendingwasunfortunatelymarredbybadlighting. WhencurtainsweredrawnalifesizeCrucifixwasflood-litfrom abovewiththeresultthatthecollarsofthechoirshowedupina blazeofwhitewhichnotonlydistractedbutirritatedtheeyesof theaudience.Thechoir,likethe players,shouldhavebeenseen onlyinsilhouettewhiletheCross rotasspotlitfromtheopening whichhasbeenthoughtfullyprovidedatthebackofthehall.
Muchthoughtandeffortwas obviouslyputintothepresentation,andthoseconcernedareto hecongratulatedTheabovecriticismsareallofdetailandhave atleastthemeritofbeing"constructive."
