ThefollowingdaytheIrishGovernmentplacedaplaneathisdisposaland hereturnedtoLondon,wherehepresidedwithCardinalGriffinatthethird PontificalHighMassforthelateCardinalHinsley,inWestminsterCathedral.ItwasthefirsttimetwoCardinalshadpresidedtogetherintheCathedral

His'GracetheArchbishopgreetedCardinalGilroyonhisarrivalinthe =allhoursofFridaymorning.

WhenCardinalGilroysteppedfromtheLancastrianairlineratGuildfordonFridaylast,at5.25a.m.,afterajourneyofjustovertwodaysfrom London,hewasgreetedbyHisGracetheArchbishop,theCathedralAdministrator(VeryRev.Dr.Kennedy),andtheArchbishop'sSecretary(Rev. FatherRafferty).TheCardinalwasalsowelcomedbyhiscousins,members oftheChessonfamily.AfterbreakfastingattheArchbishop'sPalace,heresumedhisjourneytoSydneyat7.30a.m.

MonsignorToohey,theCardinal's Secretary,wasalsogreetedbyPerth relatives,hiscousins,MissesMollyand EileenBrady.

HisEminencewasenthusiasticishis praiseoftheQantasairlinerinwhich hewastravelling,andthemannerin whichtheservicewasconducted.

Althoughthetimeathisdisposalwas brief,HisEminencegrantedashort interviewtorepresentativesofthe Press.

HesaidthatCommunistsweremakingeveryefforttogaincontrolin Italyandseemedtohaveunlimited fundsforpropaganda.

InEnglandCommunisteffortsto controltheiworkershadreceiveda setbackwhenmotortradeemployees refusedtocontinueastrikeafterthey

realisedthattheCommunistshadengineeredittoservetheirownends.

IllsEminencespokeappreciatively oftheworkbeingdonebyUNRRAin savinglivesandrelievingdistress.He hadseenthefoodcampsconductedby nunsatCatholicschoolsinItaly.had itnotbeenforthesecampsthechildrenwouldhavebeendoomedtodiseaseordeath.Thefoodwassupplied byUNRRAandwas,inturn,contributedbypeopleinallpartsofthe world.

TheGovernmentofEiresentaspecialplanetoEnglandtoconveythe CardinaltoIrelandfortheSt.Patrick'sDaycelebrations,andwhilethere hewastheguestofthePresident(Mr. SeanT.O'Kelly).CardinalGlennon, whowaselevatedatthesameConsistory,haddiedafewdaysearlier,while AayingwiththePresident.

A4p.m.onTuesday,CardinalGilroy andMonsignorTooheyleftbyLancastrianfromHerneairport,about100 milesnorthofLondon,wheretheyhad landedonJanuary23attheendof theirjourneyfromAustralia, CardinalGilroywillreturntoPerth inMayforthecentennialcelebrations ofthearrivalofthefirstBishopin WesternAustralia,thearrivalofthe firstCommunityoftheSistersof MercyinPerth,andthearrivalinthis StateofmembersoftheBenedictine Order.

IlewillbeinPerthfromMay4to May8,willbeatNewNorciafromMay 9untilMay12,andwillvisitGeraldton onMay18. OnthenightofV,ednes day,May8,hewillmakeaspecial dressatthePageantofYouthatthe SubiacoOval.

OnSundaylastaliturgicalreceptionwastenderedtoCardinalGilroy atSt.Mary'sCathedral,Sydney.

Theliturgicalreceptionisaformal ceremonymarkingthereturnofaCardinaltothepossessionofhisCathedral andofhisflock,Theoneheldfor CardinalGilroywastheseconltobe heldinAustralia.Thefirstwasheld 60yearsagowhenthelateCardinal Moran,anIrishman,wasreceivedas ArchbisoppofSydney.

TheCardinalvestedattheApostolic Delegation,NorthSydney,andproceededtotheCathedralviaCircular QuayandMacquarieStreet. Avast crowdlinedthestreetsandmanythousandswaitedforthreehoursinthe raintoseeandhearhim.

Acrowdof60,000massedinthe streetsoutsidetheCathedralandin HydePark,opposite.

CardinalGilroywaswearingthe "CappaMagna,"agreatcloakofbright scarletwateredsilk,scarletshoesand

stockings,scarletbirettaandred gloves.Wornoverthegloveofhis righthand,thegokiandtopazringof aCardinalglittereddespitethedull skies.Precededbyhisprivatesecretaryandaccompaniedbythegentlemen-in-waiting,Mr.EdwardP.Hollingdale,PrivyChamberlainoftheSword andCape,andMr,FrankGilmore, KnightofSt.Sylvester,awaring monialcostumeandinsignia,Cardinal GilroyascendedthestepstotheCathedral.TheVicar-General(MonsignorR.C,ollender)mettheCardinalat thedoors.Thedoorsclosedandthe organannouncedtothevisitingHierarchy,thePapalKnights,andthe clergyandreligiousoftheArchdiocese alreadyassembled,thearrivalofthe Cardinal-Archbishop.Theredhatof theCardinalwasborneonacushionin theprocessionasitmadeitswaytowardstheHighAltar.

InthesanctuarytheBishopsand Archbishopswereintheirplacesin twolongrows,colourfulintheirred capesandbirettas.Afterabrief ceremonytheCardinalintonedtheTe Deumasathanksgiving.Hethen lefttheCathedralbythewestern doors,toproceedalongtheambulatorytothewaitingcrowdsoutside,As hewasleaving,crowdswhohadbroken throughthepolicebarriersforcedtheir wayinto-theCathedralandfora momentthreatenedtoblockthedoors throughwhichtheCardinalwasleaving.

Inhisaddress,theCardinalsaidthat thePopehadconferredonhimthe highestofficeandthepresenceofthe greatcrowdsinspiteoftheterrific rain'wasanindicationoftheappreciationfeltbythemall.ThePope hadexpressedgreatinterestinAustraliagenerallyandhehadsentamessagetoAustralianCatholics."Tell themtheHolyFathersendshisloveto themandthanksthemfortheirgenerosity,"theCardinalsaid.Concludmg,Cardinal'Gilroysaidthatthe worldwasterriblysickandsickalmost toexhaustion.Therewasonlyone physician-God-whocouldhealthe world,andhehopedthatmenwould recognisethisandturntoGod.

TheCardinalopenedhisaddressby sayingthatheiwantedtohelpthe delegatestofacetheirproblemasCatholicmen"gravelyburdenedinconscienceandawareoftheimmenseresponsibilitywhichfallsuponyouas youcometogethertoshapethelives offuturegenerations."

Inthesame!way,ifaStateconsider itselftobelikeGodthereisnoreason whyitshouldnotexterminateany citizenholdingpoliticalorreligious eiewswhichdonotaccordwiththe State'sownideology.

SovereigntyofGod.

"Inaword,destroytheideaofGod :indyoudepravemantothestatus ofthebrute.Butmenarestillbeing persecuted,notonlyfortheirpolitical ..iews,butalsofortheirreligious views,Atthismoment,Bishopsand Priestsareinconcentrationcamps, andseveralhavediedamartyr's deathfortheirreligion.

"Itisessential,therefore,thatthe principleofthesovereigntyofthe rightsofGodandtheinalienableright ofthechildrenofGodtoliveinfreedomshouldnotonlyhedeclaredin words,butshouldbeputintopractice."

Atthispoint,theCardinaldefined hisFivePoints,afterwhichheremindedthedelegatesthatthecorollarytoabeliefinGodwasabeliefin thebrotherhoodofmanIlethenappealedtomenandnationstounite tohelpthosesufferingfromwantand insecurity. Hetoldthemthathe wasfrequentlyreceivingreportsfrom manycountries,especiallyAustriaand Hungary,tellingofthe"appallingmiseries"existinginthosecountries.

"IfYoudischargeyourdutiesas Christians,"hecontinued,"youwill hastenthereliefofallmenwhoare inneed."

InthemorningthedelegatesattendedHighMassinWestminsterCathedral,atwhichtheCardinalpreached.Inhisaddressheconcentrated ontheneedtorestoretruefreedomto individualsandnations,andhecondemnedasanotherobstacleofworld peace,"theso-calledwarofnerves andofbitterpropaganda."TheArchbishopthengavethefollowingfour waysinwhichallmenofgoodwillcan helpthecauseofpeace: AllCanHelp,

1.Allofuscanprayandhumbly askforGod'shelp.

2.ByouracknowledgmentininternationalaffairsofGod'slawanda sincerereturnofnationstoprinciples oftheTenCommandmentsandofthe SermonontheMount.

3.Byactivelysupportingandcreatingconditionswherepeacemayflourish.Wecanhelpbyourgenerosity, bysacrifice,notofprinciples,butof materialwealth.Wecanhelpbyencouragingworldtradeandintercourse betweennations.Wecanhelpbyeffectingafairerdistributionofthis world'sgoods,

4.But,finally,wemustrealisethat ourproblemsarenotmerelyofamaterialorder.Theyareproblemsof thespirit.Wehavetotrytosecure thatthespiritofChrist,thecharity ofChrist,shallextendthroughoutthe worldthathistruthandjusticeshall reign.

Unfortunately,thereseemslittle liklihoodofachangeofheartamong thoseinwhosehandsliesthefutureof theiu.orld.

Onethingatleastiscertain-the CatholicChurchwillstillcontinue,in hergloryandinhersuffering,whatever bethefateofthenationsandthedynastiesweknowto-day.Whetherthe dividedpeoplesoftheworldwilllearn intimethelessonShehastoteachremainstobeseen.PleaseGod,they will-beforesomeatomiccatastrophe ofto-morrowleavestheremnantsofa shatteredworldnooption.Yeteven ifGodtheFatherinHisdivineimpatienceweretoallowthisworldwe knowtobesmashedinthatwayinto amyriadfragments,still;wouldtheCatholicChurchbetheretogatherup thebrokenpiecesandtakethem backtoHim.

ASPIRITUALMACHINEWHICH TURNSMENINTOROBOTS

'A.:Ididn'tmeantobedevastatinga fortnightago,Henry,Iwasonlytryingtobehelpful.Andwhat'smore, youdon'tstickyourneckout,Henry, youstickyourheadinandleaveyour neckout.Remember,theostrich! And,jokingapart,don'tyouthinkthat inagreatmanycasesthetroublewith themany-headed,asYoucallthem,is thatthey,tooareratherinclinedto sticktheirheadinthesand,andsimplyrefusetofacethetruth.Forthe averagenon-Catholic,1948vintage, freedomofthoughtonlymeansfreedomtothinkorbelievewhateverhe likes;whetheritbethetruthornot doesn'tseemtomattermuch.Each manformshisownideaofGodand thepurposeoflife.Consequently, onthatbasis,youandtheman-next-

Whilestillayoungpriestheadministeredthedioceseduringtheabsence ofDr.Griver,thesecondBishopof Perth,andonhisreturfiin1871hewas appointedVicar-General.HeaccompaniedBishopGrivertothePlenary CouncilheldinSydneyin1885,anda petitionwentfromtheretoRometo havehimappointedCoadjutor.Onthe verydayofDr.Griver'sdeath,November1,1886,thecablearrivedannouncinghisappointmentasCoadjutorwith therightofsuccession.OnJanuary 23,1887,hewasconsecratedthethird BishopofPerthintheCathedralby CardinalMoran,assistedbyBishop Salvado,ofNewNorcia,andBishop Reynolds,ofAdelaide.Thewholeof theState,wasunderhisjurisdiction. Oneofthepoisoningsmentionedin hisdiaryoccurredintheWilliamsdistrict.FatherGibneywasenrouteto Albany.Afteraharddayinthe saddlevisitinghissparseandscatteredflock,hishorsesweretired,sohe decidedtostopatthenexthomestead, whetherthesettlersbelongedtohim ornot.Hereceivedafinewelcome. Thegoodwomanofthehousehadno breadbaked,soshegotbusymaking scones.Ithappenedthatherhusbandwasatthemomentdippinghis sheep,andhadastockofarsenicin thehouse.Flusteredandexcited,the goodwomantookarsenicinmistake forcarbonateofsodainthemaking ofherscones.Sheservedthescones hotanddrippingwithbutter.They wereappetising,andthepriest:was hungry.Hehadnoteatenmans whenalarmingsymptomssetup.The womanrealisedhermistake,and knewthatthepriestwaspoisoned. Throughoutthenighttherewassporadicfiringfromthebushrangers.The policewerecautious'becauseoftheinnocentprisonerswithinthehotel.Ned Kelly,whohadescapedtheevening before,returnedearlyinthemorning, determinedtofighthiswayintothe hoteltohelphiscomrades.His head,chest,backandsideswereprotectedwithheavyplatesofquarterinchiron.Nedapproachedthepoliceandbegantofire.Astrangecontestfollowed;thebulletsofthepolice boundedoffthearmouredplate.For halfanhouritcontinueduntilaconstablefiredatNed'sunprotectedlegs andbroughtthebushrangerdown. FatherGibneyspoketothecaptured Ned,learningfromhimwhowerethe mendefendingthehotel.WhenMrs. Skillian,asisteroftheKellys,attempt. edtoentertheburninghotelthepoliceorderedherback.Thebuilding wasnowablaze,whilethebushrangers continuedtofire.FatherGibneyemergedfromthecrowd.Hewalked boldlytothefrontdoorandwasquicklyhiddenbythesmoke.Directly afterwardsflamesburstfromthewalls androofofthedoomedbuilding.Terrorseizedthewatchingcrowdwho fearedforthesafetyofthecourageouspriest.Severalpolicemenrushedthebuildingfromtherear,andafew secondsafterwardstheyandFather Gibneywereseencarryinganoldman, MartinSherry.oneoftheprisoners, whowasinadyingstate,andalsothe deadbodyofJoeByrne,oneofthe Kellygang.FatherGibneyreported thatDanKellyandSteveHartwere lyingonthefloor,apparentlydead. Themissionarywhohadthecourage togoamongthewildnativesup North,andtoreturntothemasaBishop,knowingfullytheriskhetook, theintrepidpriestwhowalkedbetween twofiresintotheblazingGlenrowan Hotel,thehorsemanwhosetrackled fromGeraldtontoAlbany-thatman mustinevitablybedaringratherthan cautiouswhenitcametohighfinance. Hetookagamble,andhaditcomeoff hewouldhavebeenacclaimedafinancialgeniusinadditiontohisother,and higher,claimsonposterity'smemory. Thegamblefailed,andhehasbeen condemnedasamuddler.Heacted onthehighestmotivesinbanishing theracingnewsfromthe"Morning Herald,"whenheacquiredthatpaper. Thepublic,however,weremuchmore interestedinthefieldsforSaturday. andthelatesttips,sotheysoughtthat newswheretheycouldfindit.The Greenbushestinminesmusthavelookedfineonpaper,buttheBishopwas ill-advisedinhisspeculation.Though heresignedwithaheavyburdenof debtuponthediocese,heleftgreatassetswhichhelpedtomeetpartofthe overdraft.LookingbackonthefinancialsideofBishopGibney'sadminis-tration,wecansay,withtheperspectiveoftheyearsbetweenus,thathis wasasplendidfailure,Timehasloweredthemountainsofhisfinancialerrorsandsoftenedthecriticismwhich usuallyattacksthepublicmanwhose shipfoundersamidtherocksofdebt. ThenameofBishopGibneylingerslovinglyamongthecitizensoftheWest, especiallywiththeolderfolkwhorecallhimasanapostolicmanwilling totakeariskforagreatcause.The otherpeaksinthelongrangeofsixty-twoyears'labourinWesternAustralia loomhigherandseemmoreimportant intheestimationofhisfellowsthan theshadowscastbythefinancialfailure.Thathisnameislinkedwith LordJohnForrestindeath,astheir pathswereintertwinedwithfriendship6inlife,isthebestepitaphwhichthe Westcanpay.

Thecastingthroughoutisalmost perfect.DorothyMcGuire,asMrs. Nolan,thedrudgingmotherleftto slavetomakeendsmeetforherfamily,becauseheraffectionate,drunken husbandneverproperlyrealisedthat thiswashisresponsibility,gaveasup-

FrancisNolan,theothertreethat grewinBrooklyn,itsymbolisedher patheticstruggletocombattheeffects ofenvironmentandmisunderstanding uponhersensitivesoul,andhelpedher torealiseaspirationsmuchhigherthan herslumsurroundings.Surelythis metaphorcouldbeapplied,withequal strengthtomanyanotherslumarea ofabig,sprawlingcity,Likethe storyoftheGibbonsin"Thishappy Breed,"thisfilmisaserious,honest studyofafamily.Theirhomelife, withitsantagonisms,misunderstandings,affectionsandlittletriumphs,is delicatelyandsympatheticallytreated bytheauthor,directorandcast.They areevidentlypeopletowhomhomeis morethanjustaplacetoparkthecar. EliaKazanisthedirectorofthefilm, andinmyopinionhasdoneagood jobofwork.Naturallythereisplenty ofrealismwithsuchabackgroundof povertyandcrowdedhumanity.Still itispresentedcleanlyandnoforced strivingforeffectisevident,norare therethemorbidityandsordidity whichoneusuallyassociatesrwitha SteinbeckorHemingwaywhenhandlingasimilartheme.

AYoungBernhardtArrives.

PeggyAnnGarnerisaplainlittle girlofthirteenyears,andherfascinatingportrayalofthelittlemysticofthe tenementsis,inmyopinion,thefinest andmostsensitiveperformanceonthe screentodatebyanychildstar.Incidentallyinthisfilmshehasthebiggestchild'sroleinfilmhistory,having

erbperformance.Theroleneededno glamour,onlyrestraintandunderstanding,andthesewereforthcoming. JamesDunn,asthelikeable,easy-going JohnnyNolan,'whosecheerysmilewas abenediction,butwhocouldonly bringdreamsandromancestohisfamilyinsteadoffoodandmoney,makes abrilliantcome-backtothescreen. Althoughhisroleisnowherenearthe sizeofthoseofthemotheranddaughter,hisAcademyawardforthebest supportingroleina1945film,announcedthismonth,waswelldeserved,Joan ltlondell,asthemercurial,amusing AuntSissy,acquiringhusbandswith thesameeffortlesseaseshehasdemonstratedoff-screen,wasalsowell cast.SheandyoungTedDonaldson, asNeelyNolan,wereresponsiblefor muchofthefilm'shumour.Lloyd NolanandJamesGleason,eachin strangelysubduedparts,wereascompetentasusual. AsIsaidpreviously,"ATreeGrows inBrooklyn"isanunusualfilm.It hasnottheusuallargedosesofadultery,sensationalism,bilioustechnicolour,andphoneyspectaclethatcharacterisemostlong-runproductions thesedays.Anyonecapableofappreciating"TheHumanComedy," "TheSullivans,':"ThisHappyBreed," tomentionbutafewfilmsthathave treatedwithdignity,realismandrespecttheabsorbing,fundamentalissue andbeautifulsubjectofhomelifeand whatitmeansinsocietyto-day,will,I amsure,enjoythisfilm.

Twelvethousandmilesfromthatold worldofEurope,youcantravelamms thesparklingIndianOceantotheland oftheSouthernCross-toourownAustralia.Openthepagesofthedust, tomesofourearlyconvicthistory,and youwillfindthatthesamestoryof lovefortheMassandhatredofitwas thestrangefouridationstoneupon wnichthereligioustoleranceofour owntimewasbuilt.AsanearlyProtestanthistorianofNewSouthWales hasrecordedthefact:"NewSouth WalesiwasregardedasEnglandover theway andRomanCatholics couldexpectnofavour,Allhadto gotoChurch,i.e.,theChurchofEngland,anditissaidthat,onanappeal againstdoingsofromamanwhoexclaimed,'IamaCatholic,'hewassilencedbythecryofaclericalmag,istrate,'GotoChurchorbeflogged." Yes,itwasthetriangleandthelash forthosewhowishedtoworshipGod attheCatholicaltaroftheMass.

AlldownthehistoryoftheCatholic Churchthesamestorymightbetold. ThestoryoftheChurchandtheMass aresointertwinedthatitisutterlyimpossibletoseparatetheonefromthe other.Andthereasonisobvious.'As ChrististhelodestoneofallCatholic piety,astheChurchistheprolongationoftheIncarnationintoourown day,sotheMassistheprolongingof thegreatcentralactofourRedemptionintoourownlives.TheMass isthesplendidsacrificeofCalvary madeourveryowngifttoGod.Itis notonlyChristIncarnate,butitis ChristPriestandVictim,madepresenttoourneedsandtimes,The Mass,morethananyotheractofour religion,bringsclosetousthegreat workofourRedemption.

OnanySundaymorningoftheyear, makeyourwayintothetoweringnave ofourCathedralsortosomemore homelyshelterofaparishchurch,and youwillseethecrowdofkneelingCatholicsstilledbythesuddentinkleof abell.Atthealtartherestandsthe vestmentedfigureofapriest.He bendsoverthealtar,whilethecrowd bowsitshead.Inhishandsthere liesthewhitehostofwheatenbread. Hewhisperstheage-oldwords."This isMYBody."andslowlybendshis kneetotheearth.Thereisthetinkle ofthebellortheboomofthegong. Thecrowdsighsinthesuddenraising ofheadsastheconsecratedHostis lifted,andCatholicslifttheirhearts andtheirburdensinasuddengustof adorationtothelivingGodcomedown fromHisthroneinHeaven.Sothe Massisoffered,andthesacrificeofCalvaryisrenewed,andthePrecious BloodofChristflowsagain,aRedemp-

When,attheLastSupper,Christ saidtoHisApostles,"Dothis"-i.e., changebreadandwineintoMyBody andBlood-dothisinmemoryofMe," HemeanttheMasstobeforevera reminderofHisinfiniteloveforusin HisPassionandDeath.Therefore, aswekneelinourplacesonaSunday morning,weareinspiritremindedof thattremendoustragedyofourrace whenourfirstparentscutthemselves andtheirposterityofffromthehope ofaneternallifewithGod.BYtheir disobediencetheysquanderedthedivinegifts-tothemandclosedforeverthe eternalgatesofParadise.Downthe longhistoryoftherace,weseemankindstandinginvainoutsidethedosittlgatesofHeaven,beatingwithpuny fistsuponitsbrazenportals.The voicesofprayerandthesmokeofinnumerablesacrificesfloateduptothe coldstars.Thebloodofgoatsand calveswasshedinarubystreamto placatetheangerofanoffendedGod. Verysuccessfulindeed,andmost gratifyingtoallconnectedwithitson ganisation,wasthefirstAnnualConventionofthePerthDiocesanUnion oftheHolyNameSociety.TheConventionwasattendedby120representativesof29branches,comprisedof25 metropolitanbranches,3Goldfield, branches,and1countrybranch.The Goldfieldsdelegatescamefromdistancesrangingfrom375to450miles fromthecity.

Theclay'sproceedingswereinauguratedbytheattendanceofthedelegatesatthe10o'clockMass,whichwas celebratedinSt.Mary'sCathedralby HisGracetheArchbishop. Archbishop'sAddress.

DuringtheMassHisGrace,addressingthemembersandexpressinghis pleasureattheinitiationofthesystemoffull-dayconventions,saidhe welcomedtheHolyNamemembersto theCathedralthatmorningandcongratulatedtheirExecutiveontheirarrangementtoholdaConvention.In wishingthisyear'sConventionevery success,heexpressedthewishthatit wouldbecomeanannualfixture,and feltconfidentthatitwoulddomuch infurtheringtheinterestsoftheHoly NameSocietyintheirmidst.

Anditwasapleasure,incidentally, toseetheirranksbei,pgfilledagainby memberswhohadbeendischarged fromtheServicesHisGracesaidthat thesemenwentforthinanswertothe callofduty.Inthetestofloyalty andpatriotismtheywerenotfound wanting.ThankstoGod,theyhave returnedtotheirhomesandtheirdear ones.Otherstherewereintheirranks whowentforthnevertoreturn.That' rememberedthemthatmorning.Their fellowmemberswouldneverforgetto prayforthehappyreposeoftheir souls.Andinprayingforthesedespartedones,theyshouldbemindful, too,intheirprayersofthosewho werelefttomournthelossofadevotedfather,husband,son,orbrother, whointheirloyaltytotheirKingand countrywerenonethelessloyalto theirGodandHisChurch.

TheSociety,saidHisGrace,had morethanvindicateditsestablishment inthisDiocesenineyearsago.Some therewerewhosaidthenthatitwould notlast;thatthefirstfervourandenthusiasmwouldsoonwane.But,

thankGod,thatgloomyprophecywas unfounded.TheSocietyhadlasted; hadgrowninstrengthandenthusiasm; andthesuccessofthepastwasthesurestguaranteethattheyneedhaveno apprehensionregardingitscontinued successintheyearsthatlayahead.It hadproducedawholesomeinfluencein allparishes;withoutitsexistencethey wouldstillhavegoodpracticalCatholicmen,exemplaryfathersoffamilies, loyal,devotedsonsandbrothers;but theywouldnothaveasmanyasthey happilyhad,andtheywouldhavelackedtheforceoftheirunitedexampleof speechandpracticeinthecommunity.

Thesombrespectacleoftheworld to-daytoldthemoftheimperative needofmenimbuedwiththeidealsof theHolyNamemen.Inaworldof lowstandardstheyneededmenof highideals,menimbuedwithahigh regardformoralvalues;menimbued withahighregardforcivilauthority; menwhowouldplaytheirpartinestablishingamoralandsocialtoneworthyofaChristiancommunity.These highideals,however,mustnotbehiddenawaywithinthemselves.They mustgivethemoutwardexpression; realandfullexpression.Forithad wellbeensaidthatiftheydidnot liveastheythought,verysoonthey wouldthinkastheylived, Inrecentyearstheyhadheardmuch ofsubversiveactivities-theactivities ofthosewhowouldbetraytheirway oflife.Butwhiledenouncingsubversiveactivity,theywereapttoforget thattherewassubversiveinactivityas well.'Labouringmeningeneral,and

thedisturbingconditionswhichthey hadexperiencedduringtheiryearsof warservice.

Progress

membersoflabourunionsinparticular, shouldexertthemselvestobecomeconversantwithsoundsocialdoctrines andpractices.Eachindividual,said hisGrace,mustdohisshare;and shouldherefrainthroughapathyor ignoranceorcowardice,orallthree, thenaheavierburdenwouldbeplaced ontheshouldersofothers.Shoulda largenumberrefrainfromdoingtheir sharethentheentirefabricwouldcollapseorpassunderaliencontrol.

MenoftheHolyNamehadaduty toChurchandState:theyhadaduty togivetoCaesarwhatbelongedto Caesar,andtoGodwhatbelongedto God.Thattheywouldnotbefound wantinghehadnodoubt.Theyshould continuetobeworthyoftheSociety towhichtheywereprivilegedtobelong:theyshouldlettheirlightshine beforementhattheymight'seetheir. goodworksandglorifytheirFather whoisinHeaven.

ANNUALGENERALMEETING.

Followingupontheconclusionof HolyMass,delegatesassembledinthe CathedralHall,Murray-street,Perth, fortheannualgeneralmeeting,for whichafullandveryinteresting agendahadbeenprepared.Spiritual directionofthemeetingwasinthe handsoftheDiocesanDirector,Rev. FatherH.Lalor,theDiocesanPresident,Mr.E.leB.Henderson,beingin thechair.AlltheofficersoftheExecutiveCounciloftheDiocesanUnion werepresentatthecommitteetable.

Aftertheopeningofthemeetingby Rev.FatherLalorwiththeSociety's prayers,thePresident,inafewwell chosenwords,declaredthemeeting openandthemainbusinessproceeded, Followingtheadoptionoftheminutes ofthelastannualmeeting,delegates listenedwithcloseattentiontothe GeneralSecretary(Mr.T.J.Farmed, whosereadingoftheannualreportwas acclaimedwithapplause.

SECRETARY'S ANNUAL REPORT.

Thereportopenedonahappynote byexpressingthepleasureofallmembersoftheDiocesanUnionattheholdingofthefirstannualConventionof theSocietyduringtheyearinwhich wecelebratetheCentenaryoftheestablishmentoftheChurchinWestern Australia.ThankstoHisGrace,for celebratingtheopeningMassandfor closingtheConventionwithBenediction,werepubliclyrecorded.The prayersofmemberswererequestedfor thereposeofthesoulsof36members whohaddiedduringtheyearand whosenameswerequotedinthereport.

Attendancesduringtheyearwere good,thepercentagereceivingmonthlyHolyCommunionbeingnearlyten percentbetterthanthepreviousyear andequaltothepreviousrecordyearlypercentage.Attendancesatthe monthlyeveningmeetingsweredown veryslightly,despitethemostsevere wintermonthswithinthememoriesof members.Theresultsweregratifying,butmemberswereurgedtoestablishastillbetterpercentageduringthe ensuingyear.

Thepresentmembershipofthe PerthDiocesanUnionwasshowntobe 3,879,ofwhom2,272wereactivesenior members,937juniormembers,and837 stillservingintheForces.Thetotal membership,wasdistributedamongst 62branches(34metropolitan,24country,and4goldfields).Thesefigures disclosedagainduringtheyearof4 branchesand185members.Adisturbingfactornotedinthereportwas thelargenumberofmemberspreviouslyservingintheForces,whohad,upto date,failedtorejointheirbranches afterbeingdischarged.Theattentionofdelegateswasdrawntothe urgentresponsibilityrestingonindividualmemberstoassist,evenat thecostofpersonalsacrifice,inthe spiritualrehabilitationofsuchex-Servicemembers,andtokeepinmind

MentionwasmadeoftheSociety's activitiesduringtheyear.Outstanding amongstthosewastherestorationof theannualHolyNameRallyandEucharisticProcession,heldatAquinas CollegeontheFeastofChristthe King,Sunday,October28,1945.Suspendedduringwaryears,thisfunction hadprovedmostsuccessfulasprovidingtheopportunityofmakingapub licdemonstrationofourFaith.It washopedthat,withimprovedtransport,evengreatersuccesswouldattend futureoccasions,Anotherpleasing, andmo--tsuccessful,functionwasthe establishmentofthenewbranchat CluntarfBoys'Town.Thefervour displayedbytheboysduringtheirinitiationandtheirsubsequentsincerity givepromiseofthefuture'welfareof thisjuniorbranch.ThethirdactivityoftheyearwasthefirstRegional RallyoftheNorthamdistrict,which wasattendedbyofficersoftheDiocesanUnionCouncilandalx)ut200 members,representing12branchesin districtssurroundingNortham.The Rallywasanoutstandingsuccessand theschemewascommendedtoother largecountrycentresfortheirconsideration.

'Branchesvisitedduringtheyear were:St.Patrick's,\VestPerth;Bun bury;AquinasCollege;Northam;Subiaco;andSt.Brigid's,WestPerth: theoccasionsbeingtheholdingofCommunionBreakfasts,annualmeeting's, andsimilarfunctions.

MentionwasmadeoftheforthcomingCentenaryCelebrationsandofthe partwhichtheHolyNameSociety wouldbeaskedtoplay.Toensure thatourSocietymakesafittingcontributiontothesuccessofthecelebrations,delegateswereadvisedthata special"CentenaryCommittee"ofthe Society,consistingoftheExecutive CounciloftheDiocesanUnion,plus thepresidentsofmetropolitanbran ehes,hadbeenformedandhadal readymetonseveraloccasions.

TheSecretary'sreportconcluded withanexpressionoftheSociety's deepgratitudetoHisGrace,without whosehelpthesuccessachievedwould havebeenimpossible.TotheDiocesanDirector,Rev.FatherLalor.and tobranchSpiritualDirectorsforthe courtesyandco-operationsincere thankswereoffered.Tobranchofficersandtohisfellow-officersonthe DiocesanUnionCounciltheSecretary offeredhispersonalthanksfortheir manykindnessesandco-operation.

TREASURER'SREPORT.

FollowingtheadoptionoftheSecretary'sreport,theTreasurer(Mr.F. W.Morgan)readhisannualreportand statement,whichdisclosedtheSociety'sfundsasbeinginahealthycondition.Inamplifyinghis-financial statement,theTreasurerdealtwith thematteroftheassessmentofper capitalevies,whichwerediscussedat somelengthbymembers,thePresident answeringtothesatisfactionofdelegatesseveralquestionsdealingwith thissubject.

SPECIALBUSINESS.

Unanimityamongstdelegateswas reachedwhentheresolution,submittedbyVictoriaParkbranch,andseekinganincreaseinthepersonnelofthe ExecutiveCounciloftheDiocesan Unionfromseventotwelveofficers, "111.4,441..0

wascarried.Speakingtothisresolution,severaldelegatesexpressedtheir viewthattheincreasedvolumeofthe workoftheSociety,togetherwiththe desirabilityofDiocesanUnionofficers makingmorefrequentvisitstobranches,couldonlybeimplementedby lesseningthecallonthetimeatthe disposalofexecutiveofficers.

Greaterdiscussion,ofalessunanimousnature,centredaroundaproposal submittedbySubiacobranch,which wasdesignedtoensurethatnominationsforthevariousofficesonthe DiocesanCouncilbesubmittedby 1ranchesinwritingpriortothedate oftheannualmeeting.Finalitywas reachedontheagreementbydelegate:, thatwhere,subjecttothere-solutionas submitted,asufficientnumberofnom 'nationswasnotreceived,electionio thevacantofficesshallbemadeatthe annualgeneralmeeting,atwhich branchrepresentationmaybebyproxy. Ofinteresttocountryandgoldfields bran,heswastheresolutionpresented byPemberton,Mainimup.andNorsemanbranches,thatannualRegional RalliesorConferencesbeheldincountrydistrictsatcentrestobedetermined. Aproposal,emanatingfrom Northamdelegates,whichfoundready support,hadforitsobjectthedivision ofcountrydistrictsintodeaneries. Rev,FatherLalor,answeringenquiries fromdelegates,informedthemeeting thattheincomingExecutiveCouncil wouldsupplycountrybrancheswith thenamesofparishesintheirdeaneriesBrancheswouldthusbeableto arrangetheirconferenceswithgreater facility.ThePresidentofNortham Branch(Mr.E.Grant)advisedthe meetingthatthedateofthesecond annualRegionalRallyatNorthamhad beenfixedforSeptember8.

Twosubjectsfordiscussionbydeletheannual HolyNameRallyandEucharisticProcession,werepresentedbyHighgate andSubiacobranches.Thefirstproposedtheformationofacommitteeto preparefor,andcontrol,theHoly NameSociety'spartintheEucharisticProcession.andthesecondresolutionsoughtconsiderationoftheselectionofasitemorecentrallysituated thanthepresentsiteasthevenueof thisgreatannualfunction.Dealing 'withthefirstproposal,thePresident explainedthatonformeroccasionsthe maximumworkinpreparationforthe processionhadbeencarriedoutby theminimummtimber.Itwasthen resolvedthatthecommitteeatpresent organisingtheSociety'spartinthe CentenaryCelebrations,namely,the committeeconsistingoftheExecutive CouncilplusthePresidentsofthemetropolitanbranchesortheirdeputies. wouldcontinuetofunctionforthepurposeofthisresolution,Suchcommitteewouldberesponsibleforthere4ruitmentofsufficienthelperstoensureamoreequaldivisionoflabour. AQuestionofMeaning

Oneofthecentraldifficultiesaboutdiscussingthepost-war worldandthetaskofreconstructionistheobfuscationofideas broughtaboutbythemeaninglessorill-definedtermsofexpression.Practicallyeveryutterancebyourpoliticalleaderslends pointtr.thisobservation.Thereisavastoutpouringofwords whichpass,leavingnodistinct,well-definedideainthemind,such astheword"freedom."Thisconceptisinterpretedinitseconomicsenseas"freedomfromtheconstantanxietyofinsecurityand want."Thetermwasusedfirstinthisidenticalsensebythelate PresidentRoosevelt,butthemeanstothisfreedomanditsfinal politicalexpression,isneversomuchashintedat.Ifitisjust topre-supposesincerityandconsistencyofpurposeinmen,andif itisreasonabletoassessthepresentbythepast,itatoncebecomes obviousthatitispossibletohaveinmindthingsasdifferentand ascontradictoryaschalkandcheese.Thereisnoreasontodoubt thesincerityofanyone'senthusiasmfor"freedom."Butwhether thisinvolvestheacceptanceofathorough-goingSocialismorofa returntoasystemofwidelydistributedprivateownershipisobviouslygoingtoheanissueoffirst-classstrife.

Eithersystemwillremove"thosegrossinequalitiesthatwere theaftermathofthelastwar-thatdisgracefulcontrastofgreat povert:fandgreatwealth-andthevastbandsofheroicdefenders ofourcountrywalkingthestreetsinvainsearchforalivelihood." Butifitistruethatwehaverecentlyfoughtagainstaphilosophyoflife,thensurelytheprimarypositiveaimofreconstructionmust betosecurefreedominaspiritualsense.Howthiscanbedone bycompellingeveryonetobecomeaCivilServanthasneverbeen cleartotheCatholicmind.Alleffortstotwistmentofitintoa preconceivedstateofSociety,howeveridealintheory,isboundto fail.'Therealtaskisobviouslytososhapesocietythatitwill conformtothe-natureofman.InthisbothCapitalismandCommunismhavegonesadlyastray.Eachhasbutsucceededintorturingandtwistingthespiritofman,therebyrenderingtheirsystemsinsecurebyreasonofathousandandonemoralcontradictions.ThesocialconceptsofCatholicsproposetooffermenthe opport....nitytoliveasmen,exercisingtheirintelligenceandfre.: willintheirworkintheonlywaypossible,i.e.,byowningthe meansofproduction.Corporatelytherewillbenaturalvocational groupingsonabasisofcommonresponsibilitywhichwilleliminatetheartificialdivisionsbetweenLabourandCapital.Inthis schemeofthings,"theinterestsoftheindividualineachcountry willhavetoyieldtotheinterestsofthecommunityasawhole." Buthereagain,althoughthetermsofourrespectiveaimsareidentical,whataworldofdifferencedividestheservantofabureaucracyfromtheresponsibleandproudowner.

Butthedomesticproblemsofindividualnationsareasnothing tothedifficultiesoftheinternationalarrangementsproposedforall. Somewillhaveitthat"theinterestsofindividualnationsmust givewayinsomematters,atleasttothoseofthewidercommunity -whetheraEuropeanoraworldcommunityofnations."This maymeananything-fromanewVersailles,asMr.H.G.Wells hopes,toaCommunistInternationalismortoFederalUnion(that lunaticproposalofthedie-hardsoftheOldOrder).Whatisto thepointis,arewe,whoarethe"Have"nations,preparedto"give away"territorialgainsandeconomicadvantagestothe"Have-not" nationsintheinterestsofaworldcommunity?TheAtlantic Charterwasveryguardedinthismatter,forobviouslyitinvolves thecontinuedexistenceofImperialconcepts.Thewholeissueis alsoboundupwiththeqt4testionofnationalism,i.e.,whetherthe newgroupingsinEuropewillbeconsideredintermsofraceor culture.Itismostearnestlytobehopedthatnoonewillpropose toforce"democratic"formsonpeoplewhohaveceasedtobelieve intheirefficacyoronnationswhichdesiretoreturntotraditional ways.Theharmonyofanynewarrangementwillobviouslydependtoalargeextentoneconomicconsiderations,suchasaccess torawmaterials,livingspace,etc.,hutthepermanencyofthenew relationswilldependentirelyonspiritualthings,suchasrespect fornationalrights,andregardfortreaties.Itisforthisreason thatweregardthepointssetforthbythePopeasmorefundamentaltotheworld'sfuturepeacethantheAtlanticCharter.

FatherLaloroutlinedthepreparations beingmadefortheCentenarycelebrations,tobeheldontheSubiacoOval earlyinMay.FatherLalortookthe opportunityofcongratulatingtheSocietyontheoccasionofitsinitialConvention,andthankeddelegatesand branchSpiritualDirectorswhowere presentfortheirattendance.Heconsideredtheoccasionagoodomenfor theworkofthecomingyear,ayear inwhichemphasismightwellbelaid ontheallimportanttasksofthespiritualrehabilitationofex-Servicemembers.andtheencouragementofthe youthasprospectiveHolyNamemen, onwhomthefutureoftheSociety largelydepended.Dealingwiththe Centenarycelebrations,FatherLalor explainedthat,despitealastminute upsetinthetime-tablearrangements, ,(1thesomewhatunresponsiveattitudeofcertainmetropolitanbranches, thefunctionwouldneverthelessprove tobeoneofwhichwewouldbeproud, anhistoriceventwithwhich,hewas sure,allHolyNamemenwouldwish tobeassociated.Heinvitedmetropolitanbranchestobefullyrepresentedatfuturemeetings,whichwouldbe calledforthepurposeoffinalisingthe arrangementsbywhichtoensurethe successtheoccasiondeservedanddemanded.

Beforeretiringfromthepositionof President,preparatorytothebusiness ofelectingthenewExecutiveCouncil fortheensuingyear,Mr.Henderson askedhisfellowofficerstoaccepthis thanksforthesplendidteam-work whichtheyhadexhibitedduringthe pasttwelvemonths.Thequestionof improvingonthequalityoftheExecutivewasonefordeterminationbydelegates,inwhosehandstheelectionof thenewExecutiveCouncilrested.He alsothankedFatherLalorforhisgreat helpasDiocesanDirector,andassured himthatallmembersoftheDiocesan Unionwouldco-operatewithhimin theworkoffosteringtheSociety.

Rev.FatherLalor,havingthanked thePresidentforhisremarks,congratulatedtheretiringExecutiveCouncil ontheirworkduringthepastyear.He thenconductedtheelectionofthe ExecutiveCouncilofthePerthDiocesanUnionfor1946,theresult being:-
