Theyear18:38isanimportantone inthehistoryoftheChurchinAustralia.ThroughtheadvocacyofDr. Ulla.thorne,whowassenttotheold - landsbyArchbishopPoldingtorecruitpriestsfortheAustralianMission, thirteenpriestscametoSydney,and thustheworkofthediocesanorsecularclergybegan.These1838priests weremenofzealandsinglenessofpurpose,menofavirilefaithwhichmade their"offeringofHolyMassinabarn, abarkhut,somethingmajesticandin'spring.Theirsermonsweresimple instructionswithaconstantinsistence onthereceptionoftheSacramentsof PenanceandHolyCommunion,and alwaysanappealforthefamilyRosary,whichwasmadeeffectivebytheir Ownexampleastheykneltinthe eveningwiththesettlerandhisfamily tosaytheRosarywherevertheyhappenedtospendthenight.
OfthosethirteenIrishpriestsnot onedefaulted.Afinerecordwhenwe recallthatintheirhugedistrictsthey hadnootherstochatwithexceptthe shepherdonhislease,theticket-ofleavemanuponhisblock,andthe money-makingcolonistinthebudding towns.Theirbushpresbyterieswere lonely,justasheltertoleavetheparishnecessitiesandtheirsparsebelongings,aplacetoresttheirwearybones, achingineveryjointafterlong,hard hoursinthesaddle,tobeginitall againto-morrow,andhowoftenapaster-bysawtheshadowofatiredman noddingoverhisofficeinthelightof anevil-smellingslushlamp,orahomemadetallowcandle.

Oneofthose1838priestswasthe Rev.JohnBrady,borninCo.Cavan, Ireland,andeducatedinFrance.OrdainedinaFrenchseminary,Father BradywenttotheIslandofMauritius, whereheworkeduntilforcedtoresign 'in1836owingtoill-health.While stayinginRome,FaderBradymet Dr.Ullathorne,andlearnedofthe direneedforpriestsinthedistant landofAustralia.FatherBradyofferedhisservicesforafewyears,and onFebruary24,1838,landedinSydney,Oneofthethirteen,olderand moreexperiencedthanhisfellowmissionaries,someofwhomwerevery youngindeed.

ArchbishopPoldingsentFather BradytothedistrictofWindsor,an extensiveparish,whichincludedPenrith,andallthebranchesoftheHawkesburYRiverfromWindsortoBroken Bay,ForfiveyearsFatherBrady devotedhimselftohisflock,mostly Irishconvictshiredouttolandholders settledinthefertilevalleysofWindsor. Whenthetimecametosendapriest totakechargeoftheSwanRiverColony,thechoiceofArchbishopPolding wastheRev.FatherJohnBrady,in recognitionofhissplendidrecordas aselfless,zealousmissionary.
Itistohonourthememoryof FatherJohnBrady,whobecameour firstBishop,andtheapostolicmen andFomenwhosucceededhim,that weareholdingtheCentenaryretebrationsthiscomingMay.Itismore thanalocalevent.ACentenaryhas anationalsignificance.TodoushonourtheCardinalArchbishopofSydneyhasacceptedourinvitationand assuresusofhispresence.

Foreignersmayhavealottolearn fromourpointofview-theymayalso havealottoteachifwehavethegood sensetolearnfromthem.
