Man wasReconciledwithGod

IntheexplanationoftheCatechism wehavearrivedatthethirdarticleof theCreed,whichsays:"WhowasconceivedbytheHolyGhost,bornofthe VirginMary."

Whatdoesthethirdarticleofthe Creedprincipallyteachus?

ItteachesusthattheSonofGod, throughtheoperationoftheHoly Ghost,becameman,i.e.,tooktoHim. selfabodyandsoullikeours.

Thisarticlethereforetreatsofthe fulfilmentofthatpromisewhichGod madetoourfirstparentsinParadise, andlaterrenewedthroughthePatriarchsandProphets.Thusthisarticle -isconnectedwiththewordsofthe EvangelistSt.John:"Theword(the one'begottenoftheFather)wasmade flesh,anddweltamongus."(John1, 19.)TobecomeourRedeemer,andtoaccomplishtheworkofreconciliationbetweenGodandthesinfulhumanrace, itwasnecessarythatJesusshouldbecomeman;Hehadtotakeahuman bodyandahumansoullikeours,but HetherebyremainedGod,forasinful mancouldrendernosatisfactionto theoffendedmajestyofGod.ThcIncarnationoftheSonofGod,however, didnottakeplaceinthenaturalway, butthroughtheoperationoftheHoly Ghost,andisthereforeamysteryto us,becauseithappenedinarlipernatuiral,miraculous,mostincomprehensiblemanner.TheCatechismasks: "Whatdowecallthismystery?" "TheincarnationoftheSonofGod."

Itisanincomprehensiblemystery tous:1.HowthesecondPersonofthe Godhead,theSonofGod,tookupon Himselfourcompletehumannature, namely,ahumanbodyandahuman oul,anduniteditwithHimselfin OnePerson,and2.Howthishappened throughtheHolyGhost,fromaVirgin,whowasandalwaysremaineda Virgin.

Whatisthenourbeliefconcerning JesusChrist,whenwebelievethemysteryoftheIncarnation?Webelieve thatJesusChristisbothtrueGod andtrueman,orthatHeisaGodman:HeisGodfrometernityand becamemanintime.JesusChrist 'thereforeinHisIncarnationdidnot ceasetobeGod,butHeremainedGod asHewasfrometernity,andonly unitedtheDivinenaturewiththehuman.Hisbodywasthereforenot merelyanapparentbody,butJesus ChristwasatthesametimetrueGod andtrueman.ThatJesusChristis trueGodliketheFather,hasalready beenprovenbythesecondarticleof theCreed.Wehavestilltoprove thatHewasalsotrueman;thatisto
