Inthepresentinstructionwecome totheexplanationofthesecondarticleoftheCreed.Whatdoesthis articleteachus?
ItteachesusthattheRedeemer whomGodpromised,andsenttous, istheonlySonofGod,JesusChrist OurLord.Wesawinthefonloing instructionshowGodforetoldbythe prophetsWhomHeinspiredthemercifuladventoftheRedeemeraswell asthetimeandplaceofHisbirth Now,thisMessiaspromisedbyGod andforetoldbytheprophetsisJesus Christ,theonly-begottenSonofGod, OurLord.WhilsttheJewsarestill hopingandexpectingthepromised Messias,weconfessinthesecondarticdeofthecreedthatHeactuallyap pease's'inthepersonofourDivine SaviourJesusChrist,thereforethat God'spromisehasalreadybeenfulfilled.ThisRedeemerisnotacreature createdbyGod,butHeistheonly.begottenSonofGod.
WhatdoesthenameJesussignify?
ThenameJesussignifiesSaviour,or Redeemer.JesusisindeedourSaviour,forafterourfirstparentsbrought downuponusbysinmuchmisery andunhappinessofbodyandsoul, Jesusbroughtussalvation,namely, reconciliationwithGod,blessing,grace, isandpeace.Thisnamewasnotgiven toHimbyman,norbyaccidentmerely,butbythecommandofGod.
TheangelsaidtoMaryattheAnnunciation,"ThoushaftcallHisname Jesus;forHeshallsaveHispeople fromtheirsins."(Matt.1,21.) In HolyScriptureothernamesaregiven "toHimalso,buttheyonlyserveto remindusofthegracesofwhichwe havebecomepartakersthroughHim. Heiscalled,forinstance,theGood Shepherd,theWay,theTruth,the Life,MediatorandIntercessorwith theFather,SonofDavid,theWord thatwasmadeFlesh,etc.
WhatdoesthewordChristsignify!
ThewordChrist-inHebrewMessias-signifiesanointed..
WhyisJesuscalledtheanointed?
BecauseintheOldLawtheprophets,highpriests,andkingswere anointedwithoil,andJesusisour greatestProphet,Priest,andKing. ThewordChristoriginatesinthe Greeklanguageandsignifiesthesame astheHebrewwordMessias.Itisan officialandhonorablename.Inthe OldLawtheprophetswereanointed becausetheywereinmanyrespects %theambassadorsofGod.Thepriests andkingswereanointedbecausethe priestofferssacrificetoGod,andthe kingsruledthepeopleinGod'sstead.
JesusisthegreatestProphet,becauseHerevealsmysteries,butnot astheprophetsoftheOldLawdidby Divinerevelations,butinvirtueof HisDivineomniscience.
HeisalsothegreatestPriest, for s,henotonlysacrificedHimselfforus uponthecrossinabloodymanner, butHealsosacrificesHimselfdaily forusuponouraltarsinanunbloody manner.
IleisthegreatestKing,forasGod HeistheKingofkings,theSovereign towhomtheearthandallcreated thingsaresubject..HenceJesussaid, "AllpowerisgiventoMeinheaven anduponearth,"and"Mykingdomis notofthisworld."
NTheJewsthemselvescalledHim King,andPilatewroteoverHiscross, "JesusofNazareth,KingoftheJews."
Fromthename"Christ"isderived, too,thename"Christian."Weare thenalsoGod'sanointed,yetonly whenweliveasJesustaughtus,by wordandexample.
WhyisJesusChristcalledthe"only SonofGod"?
BecauseJesusChrististheonly trueandrealSonofGodfrometeo nity,ofonenatureandsubstancewith GodtheFather.Thismeansthatin JesusChristtheredwellthesameperfections,andinthesamedegreeasin GodtheFather.
Arewenot,then,alsochildrenof God?
Yes,wearechildrenofGod,butnot bynatureandfromalleternity;we areonlychildrenadoptedbygrace.
OuradoptionaschildrenofGodis onlyanemanationofHismercyand compassion.
HowdoweknowthatJesusChrist istheMessiasorRedeemerpromised byGod?
WeknowitbecauseinHimhasbeen fulfilledalltheprophetshaveforetold oftheRedeemer.
ThepopheciesoftheprophetsconcerningthetimeandplaceofHis birth,thecircumstancesofHislife, passionanddeath,weresoexactlyfulfilledinJesusChristthatnopossible doubtcanexistastowhetherJesus ChristwasreallythepromisedRedeemer.HenceHeHimselfsaidto theJews,"SearchtheScriptures,and thesamearetheythatgivetestimony ofMe:'(Johnv.,39.)
WhencedoweknowthatJesus ChrististheSonofGod,andtrue God?
Weknowit(1),fromtheprophecies;(2),fromthetestimonyofHis heavenlyFather;(3),fromHisown testimony;(4),fromtheteachingof theApostles;and(5),fromthedoctrineoftheCatholicChurch.
Whatdotheprophetssay?
TheycallthepromisedRedeemer "God--Godwithus,theSaintof Saints,theWonderful-theFatherof theworldtocome."
IsaiassaysofHim:"Takecourage andfearnot GodHimselfwill comeandwillsaveyou."Further, "Beholdavirginshallconceiveand bearasin,andHisnameshallbecalledEmmanuel"(Godwithus).
WhatisthetestimonyofHisheavenlyFather?
AtthebaptismofChristinthe.14,r dan,andatHistransfigurationon MountThabor,avoicefromheaven washeardsaying,"ThisismyBeloved Son,inwhomIamwellpleased."God theFatherHimself,therefore,has twicetestifielpubliclyaloudandsolemnlythatJesusChrististheSonof God.
WhatisthetestimonyofChrist?
I.ChristtestifiedthatlieistheSun ofGod,andtrueGod,likeHisFather.
(alJesussaid:"IandtheFather areone."(Johnx.,30.)
b)"Hethatseethms.seeththe Fatheralso."(Johnxlv.,9.)
