Ithasbeenstatedbymorethanono trustworthyauthoritythatthemodemageischaracterised,asamajor deficiency,byanythinginthewayof hard,lucidthought.Inthefaceof muchthatischeapanddebasingin artandliteratureitdoesseemthatthe manofto-dayisverylargelypassive andpreferstohavethingsdonefor himratherthandothemforhimself. Itwasthisattitudeofmindthatmade Fas,ismandCommunismpossible,and itisoneofthecentraldangerstoour democraticregimes.Henceitstruck measratheroptimisticofProfessor Murdochtohaveembarkedonthe answeringofquestionsinourmorning contemporary.Solongasthepredominantquestionofourcivilisation remains"Sowhat?"IfeartheProfessorwillderivemoreamusement thanpuzzlementfromhisreaders. Evenso,theProfessor'sexquisite prosestyleandgentlesenseofhumourshouldmakehisfeaturewellworth thereading.
Isupposebywayofstartingthe ballrollingtheProfessorhadtoput afewposerstohimself.ButIwas sorrytoseehimtacklingthequestion ofeuthanasia,whichissurelyrathera specialisedprovinceforthemoralist ratherthantheessayist.Professor Murdochrecognisesthatitisillegal foradoctor"tohastenthedeparture ofapatient,"butbelievesthatpublic opinionisnowinfavourofachange inthelaw.Asfarasthatgoespublicopinionisprobablyinfavourofeliminatingormodifyingseveralother oftheTenCommandments,butthat
factaloneseemstometoargue nothingagainsttheDecalogueunless itisthatpopularityistobecomethe criticismoftruth.Inayounger timemostofushadanaversionto soap,butnonumberofGallopPolls ;Amongadolescentswouldtendto'put soapoffthemarket.Inanycase,I doubtverymuchwhetherpeopleat largeareinfavourofeuthanasia.Certainlythemedicalprofessionwould notthankanyonewhowouldwishthe responsibilitiesofeuthanasiaupon them.
ProfessorMurdochreadilyadmits thatlifeissacred,thatthebusinessof thedoctoristosavelife.Butwhere lifebecomescontinuousandagonising painunrelievedbyanyprospectofrelieffrompain,theProfessorbelieves that"commonsensemustbeallowed avoiceinthematter"-inaword.in euthanasia.Suddenlythesacredness oflifehasvanishedintothinairbeforethespectreofpain.Ofcourse, theeuthanasiaadvocatespromiseall sortsofsafeguardstopreventabuse, buttousallthisislaughablebecame enthanasiaitselfistheabuse.The nrincipleofthethingisnot,asthe Professorsupposes,thatlifeisworth livingasageneralruletowhichexceptionsmayoccasionallybemade.

Nothingsotendstodryuptheprimitivefervourofamovementasconstantinsistenceonthelong-rangeobjectiveswhichcannotbeachievedbut inthedistantfuture.Youthwants toworkhereandnow,toseesmallresults.Totellthemthatotherswill reapwheretheyhavesownistotake thefirststeptowardsdiscouragement. Itis,ofcourse,largelytrue.But hereandnowthereisworktobedone 'whichmaycontributelargelytowards thefinalresult.
ThenewYouthMovementsaugur welltoavoidanotherordinalerror ofthepast-lackofimagination.It isasadthingthattheintellectisin
discardinourtime,buttherealities oflifeforceustofacethefactthat sociallifeisto-daybuiltlargelyonexternalswithmajoremphasisonthe senses.AsCatholicswecannot,of course,neglectthemindsofouryoung people.Wehavepaid,andpaid dearly,forourownveryfineeducationalsystemintheschools.Itwould herankfollytosweatourselvesblue inthefaceoverthechildren,onlyto leavethemasadolescentshangingin mid-air.Butwhilewemustcaterfor theirintellectswemustkeeparealit ticeyeontheset-upofsociallife.If the)'mustperforceliveinaworld whichfeedsonthetabloidpress,the talkiefilm,etc.,wemustasleastensurethatthesethingsarewholesome. Theheartisonlyanevilthingwhen undirectedbythehead,anditwould beadangerousthingtotamperwith thequickenthusiasmsandgenerosity ofyouth.Theselovely,spontaneous qualitiescanbedisciplinedanddirectedtotheachievementofgood.That isthetaskbeforeus.
Anotherpraiseworthyfeatureofthe newmovementsistheaimtogive youth"responsiblegovernment."In thepast,eitherfromexcessofzealor, fromalackofpsychology,therewas thetendencytopushyouthrather thantoleadit.Thedirectionof youthisajobwhichcallsforimmenseskillandinsight.Youngsters areadventurous,theywanttodo thingsforthemselves.Andthenew movementsproposetoletthemdoit underasystemofsupervisionwhich willinterfereaslittleaspossible.If thepopularsongofthemomentisto bebelieved,youth'scryis"Don't fencemein."Inevitably,andespeciallyafterwar,thereistheurge foralargerfreedom.Wherethereis nosolidbackgroundofreligionthis enhancementoflibertycanveryeasilyrunmad.Butprudentlydirected itcanbecomeaforcemakingforreal liberty.To-dayAustraliafacesthet dangerofever-increasingStatepower andthefreedomoftheindividualisin seriousperil.Thenaturalimnulses ofouryouth,anchoredinthesanityof theCatholicFaith,mustmakeareal bidtobuildanewAustraliaonanew youth.

Evangelist,accompaniedbythreeSisters--Emilie(thefirstSuperioress), PatrickandCarmel-tookpossessionof thenewestablishmentwhich,sincethe officialopeningtookplace,onFebruary2,wasappropriatelynamed "Mary'sMount.OntheeveoftheFeastofthePurification,HolyMasswascelebratedfor thefirsttimeinthelittleoratoryby thelateRev.FatherFlynn,0.11.1.,who alsoblessedthenewabodeoftheSistersandgavetoOurEucharisticLord HisfirsttabernacleontheHills.His Graceatthistimewasabsentonhis AdLiminavisittoRome.
ThebeautifulfeastofOurLady,February2,sawtheopeningoftheboardingschoolwithfiveboys,whiletwelve soughtadmissionasdaypupils.In 1926theenrolmentofboardershadincreasedtosuchanextentthatitwas foundnecesssarytomakeadditionsto theexistingbuilding.Whilethese wereinprogresstheSistersandboys ocupiedahomesomeshortdistance fromMary'sMount.
Aftertheexpirationoffourmonths theboardersandstaffreturnedtoa somewhatmorecomfortableandspaciousconvent.Thenewbuildingwas blessedandopenedbythelateMonsignorVerlingwho,inthecourseofhis address,spokeineloquenttermsofthe workofthegoodSisters,andwasloud inhispraiseofthewonderfulsite,remarking,"Fromhereyouhaveoneof themostpicturesqueviewsofthe State,"
Duringthequarterofacentury thathaselapsedsincetheboarding schoolwasopened,manyimprovementstothegroundsandbuildings havetakenplace,andto-dayonecan scarcelyrecogniseinthewell-ordered establishment,withitsbeautiful grounds,thehumblelittleMary's Mountof1921.
Thescholasticresultsachievedduringthesetwenty-fiveyearsareevidence ofthezealandabilityoftheteaching staff,whosechiefaimisnotonlythe materialamusementoftheboys,but alsotheirspiritualwell-being.
Sinceitsinceptionin1921,2,095boys havepassedthroughtheportalsofthis college,andall,withoutexception,retainveryhappymemoriesoftheirassociationwiththeSisters.Weekly,almost,pastpupilsreturninaspiritof gratitude,tovisittheiroldschooland teachers,andonefindsdifficultyinre cognisinginthosestalwartyoungmen thelittleboysofformerdays.MemberstoohavepaidthesupremesacrificeintheWorldWarII.,andmany aretheprayersofferedforthehappy reposeoftheirsoulsbythepupilsand teachersoftheCollege.

Rev.FatherMurphy,DiocesanChaplaintotheY.C.S.,inunfoldingthe planofworkfortheyear,placedbeforehisaudiencetheidealsandhopes whichheprayedwouldbecemented bytheteachersduring1946.Ina lucidandencouragingaddressheexpoundedthereasonswhichmadethe extensionofCatholicActioninthe schoolsanimperativeandurgentaim Hespokeasfollows:
"ACatholicschoolconductedbyreligiousteachersputsreligionfirst,every effortbeingmadetodevelopharmoniouslyallthemoral,intellectualand physicalfacultiesofthechild.This withaviewtoteachingthechildthe purposeofhisexistence,andacquit tingthechildtofulfilthatpurpose, whichisthepraise.reverenceandset:viceofGod.
"Suchbeingthecasewemaywell ask,"WhyCatholicAction?"What needcantherebeforitinschoolsthe veryexistenceofwhichprovestothe passer-bythattheCatholicChurchis constantlystrivingtobringbeforeher childrenthewarningcontainedinthose thought-provokingwords:"Forwhat dothitprofitamanifhegainthe wholeworldandsufferthelossofhiownsoul?"(MatthewXII.,v.26.) "Theanswertothatquestionisnot verydifficult.Wemustremember wecansaveachildforGodonlyifhe isablelaterontosavehimselffrom theworld.Whynotpreparehimfor thatstruggle?Whynottrainhim FOthathecantakehisplaceinthe ranksofthosewhoarestrivingtorestoreAustraliatoChrist?
"TorestoreAustraliatoChrist-this isthehopeofCatholicAction-ahope we-wholeheartedlyshare.Yet,experiencehasmadeitclearthatifweare tohopeforawidespreadcampaignon behalfofChristianprinciples,wecannotaffordtowaituntilmindsarealreadyformed,atleastinthenegative senseofbeingfurtherunimpressionable.Thefoundationofthesound ('atholicadultmindmustbelaidin theschools.Therewehavefresh youngmindsatourdisposal.There wehaveYouthreadytoseizeanideal. Therewehavegenerosityreadyto giveitsardent,unselfishserviceand mostfertilefieldfortheworkofCatholicAction.Noonehasrealised thisfactmoreclearlythanourlate HolyFather,PopePiusXI.Writing totheCardinalArchbishopofRiode JaneiroinOctober,1935,hesaidofCatholicActioninschools:
ApostolatefortheYoung.
"Religiousmenandwomenwillhelp CatholicActioninaveryspecialway iftheystrivetoprepareforitfrom theirearliestyearstheboysandgirls whomtheyhaveintheirschoolsand academies.Theseyoungpeopleshould atfirstbedrawntoadesireforthe Apostolate,andthenshouldbesteadilyandearnestlyurgedtojointheas-
sociationsofCatholicAction,and wheresuchassociationsarewanting theyshouldbepromotedbythereligieusthemselves.
"Thechiefbenefitwillbederived fromtheyoungpeoplethemselves whoarebeingtrainedforCatholicAction,forthus,aswehaveoftensaid, afterhavingbeenpreparedbothintellectuallyandmorally,theywillbe providentiallyreceivedintotheseassociationsatpreciselytheagewhich ismostdangerousAndwillfindin themthatsafeguardandtheassistance'whichtheyneedinordertoface bravelyandconquerthemanyserious dangerswhichpermeatethesocialenvironmentinwhichtheymustlive.

Writingin1934toArchbishopPer domo,ofBogoto,thePopesaid:
"Sincethefutureisinthehands ofYouth,andinparticularofyoung students,itistothemaboveallthat wemustdevoteourselveswiththe grsatestcare.Itisnotsufficientfor centresofCatholicActiontospring upinuniversities;thesecentresmust bemultipliedincollegesandall housesofeducationwhereyoungpeoplemustbeinstructedandprepared forCatholicAction,anddirectedtowardsitwiththeviewoffutureparticipationinitsorganisation."
FatherMurphycontinuing,said: "TherecanhenomistakingthepurportoftheHolyFather'scommands, norare-weunmindfulofthedesireof theAustralianHierarchythatCatholicActionshouldhaveavitalplacein thelifeofeveryCatholicsecondary school.Thedayispastwhenwecan regardCatholicActionasjust'another trimming.'HisGracetheArchbishophasmadeitveryclearthathe wishesourco-operation,andthiscan hebestachievedthroughthestructure andbuildingupoftheYoungChristian Students'Movementinourmidst.

"Itisimportanttorememberthat thisMovementisnotintendedtointerferewiththeexistinglifeofthe school.Itsaimistoexpandandenrichwhatisalreadypresent.It wantstomakeofthestudentafuller, moreearnestChristian,andtoenable himtodevelopbyhisowneffortscertainattitudestolifewhichtheschool naturallycannotcopewithcompletely. Thus,aCatholicActionMovementwill heconcernedwiththeattitudeofthe studentstowardstheirsport,their study,gieirsparetimeinterests,their hobbies:itwillbeconcernedwith theirlivesathome,withtheircompanionsintheplayingfieldsaswell asintheschools.
"Secondly,CatholicActionisconcernedprimarilywithchangingattitudes--withaFormationofPersonality.Theaimis,thatwhenstudentswillleaveschool,theywillcarry awaywiththemtherightattitudetowardsCatholicAction,andaonehundredpercent.Catholicsolidityof Faithwhichwillenablethemtomeet theproblemstheymayimmediately havetoencounter.

"Inconclusion,Isaytoyouwhoundertakethisgreatwork:Don'tbein agreathurryforresults.Don'tbe upsetifgroupsdieoutorifstudents whoseemedpromisingletyoudown. RememberthatCatholicActionisa movementofhumanbeingsdealing withotherhumanbeings;itisnotjust anorganisationormachine.ItisOrganic-itmustgrowasatreegrowsthatgrowthcannotbeforced;said,as Isaidbefore,theschoolisthefairest andmostfertilefieldinwhichthis growthcanbetendered.

FatherMurphyandfellowmem bers,ItisfittingthatIshouldcommence thisreportonthespiritualcondition oftheGuild.Thisisverysound.The dailyrecitaloftheGuildprayerand thefaithfulobservanceoftheoffering ofMassandHolyCommunionforthe GuildonthesecondSundayofthe monthistheprogrammefollowedby4 allourmembers.GuildSunday,on whichMasswascelebratedbyour Chaplain,Rev.FatherMurphy,was heldonApril8.Owingtotransport difficultiesmanymemberswereobligedtoattendtheirownparishchurchesonthatday,butitishopedthat inthefuturewewillbeabletodemonstrateourFaithinasolidbodyat thiscorporateactofworship.
OurthirdannualenclosedRetreat1. washeldatLoretoConventfromWednesdayevening,December26,toFridaymorning,28th.Thoseofuswho werefortunateenoughtoattendfeel wonderfullyprivilegedtohavehad againthisyearRev.FatherLawler, S.J.,forourRetreatMaster.During hislectureslastyear'sinstructions weremoreforciblydrivenhome.We wereallimpressedwiththedeepspiritualityofalltheexercisesandare mostgratefultohimforthebenefit wederivedfromhistalks,aswellas hiskindlyandsympatheticassistance inourpersonalproblems.
TotheRev.MotherandtheSisters ofLoretowhohaveagainextended toussuchcordialhospitalityatatime whentheymightreasonablybeexpectedtobeenjoyingawell-earned rest,weareindeedgrateful.Thefact thattheyarewillingtomakeoverto ustheirbeautifulpremisesforafew daysandtospendthemselvesinlookingafterourwellbeingwhileweare withthemisanedifyingexampleof charity.

AtthebeginningoftheyearteachersinvariousCatholiccollegesand conventswereinvitedtobecomeassociatemembers.Theresponsewas mostgratifying,andinconsequence wehavethehappinessofknowing thatverymanyofthereligiousinour Catholicschoolsareonewithusin ourGuildprayers.Indeedwefeel thatmuchofthesuccessoftheGuild thisyearisduetotheirspiritualassistance.

Theirfortnightlymeetingshaveusuallywitnessedanimateddiscussions ontopicalsubjects,butthechiefresultoftheiryear'sworkhasbeento formulateaprogrammethatwillbea guidetotheirbranchinsucceeding years.Theyexpresshopeandconfidencethatnextyearwillseethem morefirmlyestablished.Theyalso endeavouredtoarrangeseveralenjoyablesocialfunctionsandconcluded theiryeariwithaCatholicteachers' dance.

Circularlettersweredistributedas usual,aswellasperiodicalpapersof lecturesandothersubjects.Wehave alsoforwardedprogrammesandsets ofreligiousinstructionswhichwere suppliedbyourchaplaintoteachers incountrydistrictswhohavesolicited assistanceinthismatter.Ourlibrarian.MissStanbury,hasconstantly beenonthelookouttosecurebooks andpamphletstofurtherassistthose teachersengagedinthatnoblework, LetterstothePress.
Fromtimetotimeowehavewritten tothedailyPresslettersaimedto counteractunsoundpropagandaand toencouragethosewhoarealreadyin thefieldbeforeus.

VisitationtotheChildren'sHospital hascontinued,butthisistheoneactivityundertakenbytheGuildthat hasnotbeensupportedasitdeserves.

Thecitytiranchentertained)visitorsfromthecountryduringthesummerMayandAugustholidays.These functionsweremostenjoyable,butin additionweappreciatethemforthey servetocementGuildfriendship.

Inwhatdidthesupernaturalgifts consist?Especiallyinthis:thatthe firstman-

OnTuesday,January29,inthepresenceofoverthreehundredpeople,His GracetheArchbishopofficiallyopened branchesofboththeYoungChristian Workers'andNationalCatholicGirls' MovementsintheparishofLeederville.Tothisillustriousparishbelongsthedistinctionofbeingthefirst inWesternAustraliatoopenbranches ofbothMovementssimultaneously. TheRallytookplaceinSt.Mary's Hall.
Between7.30and8.15p.m.elections forbranchcommitteeswereconducted, andthenamesofthoseinterestedin variousactivitiesweretakenattables arrangedforthatpurpose.Circulars andliteratureofthemovementswere Afreelydistributedamongtheassembled bodyofyouthinthehallduringthis period.
At8.15p.m.HisGracetheArchbishoparrived,accompaniedbytheRt. Rev.MonsignorMoloney,theLeedervilleparishpriest.;theRev.Dr.Sullivan,theY.C.W.diocesanchaplain,Rev, FatherLalor,theN.C.G.M.diocesan chaplain,andtheRev.FathersO'FarrellandRafferty;andMr.TedLong, a,theactingNationalSecretaryofthe Y.C.W.

ThenextspeakerwasFatherLalor, whoemphasisedtheneedforloveand generosity.Forrealsuccessthere mustbepresentaneverardentloveof one'sfellowworker.Thislovebegan awaybackinthetimewhenChrist Himselfsaid,"Bythisshallallmen knowyouasMydisciplesthatyou haveloveoneforanother."(John xiii.,55.) FatherLalormentioned thatCommunistsaretheonlyotherorganisationdoinganythinginconnectionwiththeworkingclass,andremindedtheboysandgirlsofthenecessityofthrowingtheirheartsandsouls intotheirmovements."Youarenot joiningyourMovementforwhatyou cangetoutofit,"hesaid,"butfor whatyoucanputintoit."Hethrew outachallengetotheyouthtotake upthetaskofChristianisingtheworld andshowedthemthatthereweregreat thingsahead.InBelgium,wherethe JeunesseOuyriereChetienne(Young ChristianWorkers'Movement)isatremendouspower,onehundredandten leaderswereshotbytheNaziswhen theyoccupiedBrussels.andhundreds morewerethrownintoconcentration ramps,includingCanonCardijn,the founder.Butsuchwasthespiritof theMovementthat,withinaweekof theirliberationbytheAllies,they publishedtheirweeklypaperwitha circulationof700,000copies.Thatis thespiritthatAustralianyouthneeds.

ThecontinuedandtremendouspopularityofBingCrosbymakesitnecessarytoconsiderhimassomething morethanmerelyoneofthe"stars" ofHollywood.Mostoftheseso-called "stars"areoftheshootingvariety,appearingforabriefspaceandthenfadingintooblivion;butforaboutfifteen yearsnowCrosbyhasattractedattentioninthefieldbyentertainment,and recordingswhichhemadetenyears agoarenowsellingbetterthanever. Hehasgoneonfromsuccesstosuccessandhasbecomeasmuchofana tionalfigureaswasWillRogersadecadeago.
Crosby'sphenomenalpopularity hasservedtoshedagooddealoflustre ontheCatholicChurch.foritiswell knownthatBingisapractisingCatholicandagreatfamilyman.Notlong agohequietlydonatedanorgantohis parishchurch,andhehassungMidnightMassmorethanonce.His motherisaferventCatholicandanimplacableteetotaller.Sheisratherfond ofhorseracing,however,andwhen reproachinghersonsononeoccasion forimbibingalittleshewasmetwith theretort:"Wedrink.Youbeton horses.It'sallthesameintheeyes oftheLord."

Sincethen,likeachildwithanewtoy, ithasconsistentlyplayedwiththis theme,and"HangoverSquare"isthe latestoutcome.
In"RansomHarvest"oneremembersthatthegentlevictimofamnesia wasplayedbygentleRonaldColman, who,aftermarryingGreerGarson, promptlyforgotallabouther-which actionwasabitthick,tosaytheleast, andalsoabsolutelyincredibletomy wayofthinking.(IfImightintrude withapersonalnotehere,Iwouldlike tomodestlyexplaintomyreaders,both ofthem,thatIamoneofGreer'smost gallantandfaithfuladmirers.)The heroof"HangoverSquare"isalarge, bewilderedcomposernamedGeorge HarveyBone(LairdCregan),who overworkshimselfintofitsofamnesia. Evenanydiscordantsoundcouldsend himintoaweirdperiodofforgetfulness,whichwasusuallyclimaxedbya strangulation.AtthisstageIfound myselfspeculatingattheenormous death-rateincreasewhichwouldhave resultediftheenthusiasticGeorgehad everheardthemodernscourge-the AndrewSisters.Georgeisworriedby theseblankspellsandheseeksadvice fromaScotlandYarddoctor(George Sanders),whohelpshimtorealisethat duringtheseblankspellshemayvery possiblybeamurderer.Hesuggests relaxation.Georgetriestowitha glittering,deadlypoisonousmusichallbeautynamedNetta(LindaDarnell).Whenhefinallyrealisesthatshe isusinghisinfatuationtofurtherher cheapcareer,heprovesthedoctorwas right,usingNetta'sshapelyneckasa provingground.ThecorpseisplantedonthecrestofaGuyFawkes'bon.
