A.:Youenclosedsomepagesfrom apapercalled"SignoftheTimes." Inthesepagesisanarticleopposing theCatholicdoctrineoftheEucharist,andparticularlythedogmaof Transubstantiation.Thechiefburdenofthearticleisahoaryoldargument,viz.,thatthedogmaofTransubstantiationisofcomparativelyrecentoriginintheChurch.

Thewriter'sintentionistoshowthat manyCatholicwritersofweightand manyoftheearlyFathersdidnot holdwiththedogmaofTransubstantiation,i,e.,thechangingofthesub stanceofbreadandwineintothesubstanceofChrist'sBodyandBlood. Buthe,eitheringeniouslyoringenu.
ously,confoundedthecentraldogma oftheRealPresencewiththatof Transubstantiation,oneoftheallied dogmasgroupedaboutthecentralone. Thus,hestatesthatthedogmaof Transubstantiationwasdefinedduring thetenthSessionoftheCouncilof Trent;actually,itwasdefinedduring thethirteenthSession-theRealPresenceandTransubstantiation.Inthe mindoftheChurcharetwothings boundupso-intimatelywithone another,thatthetwodogmashave beenhandeddowntogetherfromgenerationtogeneration.Butwhena manwritesanarticle,whichclaims tobeauthoritative,heshouldfirstof alldefinehisterms,andatleastmake itclearwhatheistalkingabout.
Thusalso,misquotingatextofsuch aneminenttheologianasCardinalCajetan,andusinghisreferencetothe historicaldevelopmentofthedogma ofTransubstantiation,theauthortries toprovethatCajetandeniedanyproof fromtheGospelsoftheRealPresence.Thatisarrantnonsense.Then thispassage:"Amongtheprelateswho mostcourageouslyopposedthedogma ofTransubstantiationintheeleventh centurywasBerengariousofTours."
The"mostcourageously"immediately presentsBerengariusasamartyrfor thetruth.ButBerengariusdidnot representCatholictradition,hewas condemnedasaheretic,retracted,and wasreconciledtotheChurch.How thencanhistestimonyprovethatthe earlierChurchdidnotteacheitherthe Real*PresenceorTransubstantiation?

QualitiesofFaith.
Furthermore,inorderthatourfaith hegenuine,pleasingtoGod,andbeneficialtoourselves,itmustpossesscertainqualities'whichwemustnotoverlook.
I.First,ourfaithmustbeuniversal; thatis,wemustbelieveallthetruths revealedbyGod,Therecanbenoex-* ceptions.ForChristsaidtotheApostles:"Goforthandpreach teacching themtoobserveallthingswhatsoever Ihavecommandedyou."(Matt. XXVIII.,19-20.1 Mostpeoplebelieve inoneGod,butdonotbelieveinthe ThreeDivinePersons.Somebelieve inJesusChrist,butrefusetobelieve thatHewasatonceGodandMan Othersconsiderthesoultoheimmortal, butdenythatweshallriseagainwith ourbodies.Mostpeoplebelievethat somedaysseshallberewardedorpunishedforouractionsinthislife,but manycannot,orwillnot,acceptthe doctrineofeternaldamnation.Thisis wrong.WemustbelieveallthatGod hasrevealedandtheChurchteaches; thatisourfaithmustbeuniversal.
2.Secondly,ourfaithmustbefirm. Ourfaithisfirmwhenwepermitno doubttoenterintoourminds.Ibe-
lievethatwhichIcannotsee,orwhich Icannotfullycomprehendandgrasp withmymind.ButGodhasrevealed it,andthatissufficientforme.We findmanybeautifulexamplesoffirm faithintheScripturesandthelivesof theSaints.Noebelievedandtheflood didnottouchtheArk.Ontheother hand,Mosesdoubtedandwaspunished.Abrahamdidnotwaverinhis faith,butwasreadytosacrificehis onlyson.Thewomanwithanissueof bloodfirmlybelievedthatJesuscould cureher.Therewasnottheslightest doubtinhermind.Therefore,Jesus saidtoher:"Thyfaithbathmadethee whole.Goinpeace."Thecenturion ofCapharnaumhadfirmfaithandbelievedthatChristcouldcurehisservant,evenwithoutseeinghimorlaying Hishandsuponhim,Therefore,Jesus saidtohim:"Verily,Ihavenotfound sogreat)firm)faithinIsrael."
3.Thirdly,ourfaithmustbealiving faith;thatis,seemustpractiseitin ourdailylives.ChristHimselftells us:"Noteveryonethatsaith,'Lord, Lord,'shallenterintothekingdomof heaven.Buthethatdoththewillof MyFatherwhoisinheaven,heshall enterintothekingdomofheaven."A livingfaithisonenotonlyofwords, butofdeedsaswell.For"asthebody withoutthespiritisdead,soalsofaith withoutworksisdead,"saysSt.James. "AndifIshouldhavefaith,"saysSt. Paul(I.For.,XIII.,2),"sothatI couldmovemountains,andhavenot charity,Iamnothing."
4, Lastly,ourfaithmustbesteadfast;thatis,onceIknowwhatGod hasrevealed,nothingonearthcan changeme.LikeSt.Paul,weshould beabletosay:"NothingwilleverseparatemefromtheloveofGod,neither wantnorsuffering,neitherlifenor death."Theholymartyrsarebeautifulexamplesofasteadfastfaith.St. Lawrencewasroastedona'gridiron,but hewouldnotapostatise,Intheyear 1590,20,000ChristiansinJapan,young andold,werecrucifiedorburntatthe stake;buttheywereallsteadfastin faith,encouragingoneanothertopersevereintheirfaith,valuingitmore thanlifeitself.
Therefore,inthewordsofSt.Paul, "Standfastinthefaith"(I.Cot.,xvi. '3).Andwhataconsoationitshould heforustoknowthatweareinpossessionofthetruefaith!"Thereisno moresolidwealth,nogreatertreasure, thanCatholicfaith,"exclaimedSt.Augustine.He,whopossessesthetrue faithandpractisesit,enjoyscontinualpeaceofheartandmind,knowing thatheisinpossessionofthat"one Lordonefaith,andbaptism,oneGod andFatherofall.whoisaboveall,and throughall,andinusall"(Eph.,ix., 5-6).
