Pointis,thatalthough,strictly speaking,theword"soul"maybeappliedtoplantandanimallife,itisrestrictedinordinaryspeechtothe sourceofman'srationallife.Every livingthing,plant,animalandman, haswithinitselfthesourceofitsown activity.Thatsourceoflifeoractivityiswhatwecallthesoul.Plants vegetateandgrow.Theyhavea vegetativesoul.Animalsnotmerely grow,buttheyfeelpleasureandpain, havepowerofmovement,andhaveinstincts.Theyhavebothavegetative andsensitivesoul.Man,moreperfect still,notmerelygrowsandhasmovementandfeeling,buthealsothinks andreasons.Hepossesseswhatwe callarationalsoul.Andman's rationalsouldiffersessentiallyfrom thatofananimal.Thehumansoul isspiritual.possessingthepowerof conjuringupabstractideas,which cannotheformedbyameresense faculty.Ananimalcannotpassbeyondwhatisavailabletothesenses.
And,therefore,wesaythatananimal hasnotgotasoulinthesensein whichwespeakofamanhavingan immortalsoul.
AsIsaidamomentago,ahuman soulcanreasonoutthings.Bymeans ofaspiritualfacultycalledtheIntellectitcandrawconclusionsfrom knownfartsandthereforemakeprocressandinventthingsnew,Ananimalcannotactoutsidethelimitsof itsowninstinct.Itisheldinagroove fromwhichitcannotescape.Birds buildtheirnests.nowjustastheyalwaysbuiltthem.Theclogienocleverernowthanhehaseverbeen.Any developmentthattakesplaceisinthe realmofsense.Grilyrationalbeings ranthinkandprogress.
Thehumansoul,too,isendowed withfreewill.Itcanchoosethelesser ratherthanthegreateradvantage.The animalcannot.Whenthestronger trailisdiscovered,thedogmustfollow itofnecessity.
And,finally,thehumansouliscapableofseparateexistenceapartfrom thebody.Thefactthatitcanexercisesuchspiritualfunctionsasthinkingandwillingwhicharebeyondthe nowerofmaterialthingsshowsthatit isindependentofthebodyatleastfor itsexistence.True,thesoulisdependentonthebrain.andonthe sensesforitsknowledgeandfunctioning,butitsexistenceisasindependentofthebrainandthebodyas themusician'sexistenceisindependent ofthemusicalinstrument.Thepian-
istcannotplayifthepianoisbroken, butheisstillasexistentasbefore.
Theanimalsoul,onthecontrary,is essentiallydependentonmatter.In otherwords,itisnotspiritual.Itis incapableoflifeapartfromthebody andperisheswithit.Itpossessesno reason,freewill,orspiritualactivity whatever.Itisruledentirelybyinstinctanditsworkingisrestrictedto thedomainofthesensesanditdies withthebody.
Forthedog,deathistheendofall things.Forthehumanbeingdeath isbutthebeginningofalifeofimmortality,withwhichthebodyalso willbeassociatedaftertheresurrection.

A.:Firstofall,theword"rite" meansacustom.Appliedtothe Churchitmeansaparticularmethod orformofworship,which,thoughit mayvaryincertaincountries,stillretainsalltheessentialsofCatholic Faith.Forexample.anOriental's ideaofreverenceandworshipdiffers fromthatofaWesterner.Whereone kneels.theothermay_stand;whereone uncoverstheheadasamarkofrespect,theothermayconsideritmore respectfulnottodoso.Andsodon, withregardtoalltheotheraccidental detailsofliturgicalfunctions.To suchformsofworshipwheretheyare appropriateandoflongstandingthe Churchgivesherofficialsanction,and theyareknownas"Rites."
TakeBaptismasacaseinpoint.For thevalidadministeringofthisSa,ramentinacaseofnecessity,allthatis requiredistoapplythewaterwith theproperformofwords.Normally, however,anumberofprayersand ceremoniesaccompanytheadministration.Thesemayvarywithdifferent countries.anditistosuchvariations thattheword"Rite"Isapplied.Like awiseMother,theChurchhasallowed suchvariations,andevenseesthat

LATINRITEISPRACTICALLY UNIVERSAL

.\ her,intheCatholic Church,wehavenineteendifferent Rites,ornineteendifferentwaysof carryingoutliturgicalfunctions.But ofthesenineteen,one-theLatinor RomanRite-ispraticallyuniversal.It isusedbyaboutthreehundredand seventymillionofthefourhundred millionCatholicsthroughoutthe world,andistheonewithwhichyou wouldhefamiliar.Exceptforthe dioceseofMilaninItalyandonedistrictinSpain,alltheotherRites havetheirhomeintheEast.Just overtwentymillionCatholicsbelong tothesevariousRites.Theyare knownamongstotherCatholicsasthe EasternUniates,ormembersofthe OrientalChurch.TheyareallCatholics,whohavebeenallowedtoretain theiroldformsofworship.Mass,for example,iscelebratedinninedifferent w'vsamongstthem.
TheunityofthesevariousEastern RiteswithRomewasstrikinglydemonstratedin1895,whentheHoly Fatherpresidedoverreligiousceremoniescarriedoutintwelvedifferent Rites.Itisinterestingtoremember, too.thatthesamePope-PiusXI.himselfbelongedtotheAmbrosian Rite,whichistheRiteprevailingin Milan,thecityinwhichhewasborn. A.:First,achildistobebaptised intheRiteofhisfather,andhebelongs tothatRite.Secondly,itisforbidden tochangeRiteswithoutthepermissionoftheHolySee.Thirdly,wemay gotoConfessionandreceiveHoly Communionfromapriestofanother Rite,provided,ofcourse,heisinunion withRome.
Q.:And,finally,wouldyoupleaseexplainwhytheKyrieEleisoninthe MassisinGreekandnotinLatin withtherestoftheMass?
A.:TheKyrieEleisonanditsresponsesarerelicsofaprayerwhich goesbacktothefourthcenturywhen Greekwastheliturgicallanguageat Rome.Yousee,Latinwasnotat firsttheliteraryandofficiallanguage oftheChurchintheWest.TheGospelwaspreachedinGreek,practically thewholeoftheNewTestamentwas originallywritteninGreek,andeven downtothefourthcenturyofthe ChristianeraGreekwasstillusedin theChurch,ifnotinsermonsanddiscourses,atleastinimportantwritings.
TheKyrieEleison,towhichyourefer,waspartofaprayerusedinprocessions,andbecameuniversally knownandpopular,whichmayexplain whyitwasneverrenderedintoLatin.

Ihaveagreatdealofsympathywith farmerfolk,andIknowfromexperiencethattheburthenofDr.Buntine's complaintisjustenough.Itisnot onlyunfairtothecountrychildtosend outinexperiencedand 'half-trained teachers,butitisunjusttotheteachers themselves.Thewholeproblemseems tometoariseoutoftheridiculous centralisationofAustralia'surbanpopulation.Thevastmajorityofteachers
areborn,rearedandeducatedinthe city.Theyhaveanurbanoutlook. Mostofthemdreadtheideaofbeing senttothecountryandgoundercompulsion.
Thecountryschoolis,therefore,not arulesuccessful.Foronething thereisnospecialcurriculumforcountryschoolsasdistinctfromcityschools. Yet,judgedevenfromtheutilitarian standardsofmoderneducation,it shouldbeso.More,fromthepointof viewofpoliticsandnationalpolicy,it isplainthattheflightfromthelandis essentiallyintegratedwiththefallin thebirth-rate.Thecountryalone adequatelyreproducesitselfwhilethe citysurvivesbydrainingoffthecountry'sreservoiroffertility.

Herequires,too,tobemadeconscious ofthephilosophyofthelandasamost necessaryanddesirablewayoflife.
Andinthecircumstanceswhichat. 1,11,1agricultureinthisState-large holdings,sparsepopularity,enormous distances,etc.-hewillneedtobeable tosupplytosomeextentforhissocial isolation.Hence,'hisculturalformationwillneedtodriveallthedeeperif heissuccessfullytotriumphoverlonelinessanddiscouragement.
Toachieveallthiswillcallforanew typeofeducationandforanewtype ofteacher.Theidealwouldbethat thecountryschool-teachershouldbe country-bornandcountry-bred.Men andwomenwhoareofthesoilandwan lovethesoilwillbethebesttomoufi thespiritofthecountrychildinthe rightdirection.Ifsuchteachershave thebackingofwiseandprogressive governmentalpolicyitmayyetbepossibletoassurethegreatnessofAustralianlife.
Foremostamongtheproblemsofrural educationisthatofthereligiousschool. Hithertoithasbeenmanagedwitha greatdealofingenuity-correspondencecoursesinreligion,religiousholidayschools,andinmanyplacesbythe ro-operationoflaypeopleininstructing thechildrenintheirimmediatevicinity. Butnobodywouldclaimthatthese zealousandingeniousmethodsare enough.
Thedayoftheareaschoolsiscoming whenchildrenwillbebroughtfroma certainradiustoacentralschool,and thesmallone-teacherschoolswilldisappear.Tocompetewithsuchacentralisedgovernmentschemewillcallfor furthersacrificefromthealreadytwicetaxedCatholicparent.Buttheyhave neverletthedepthoftheirpocketsbe themeasureoftheirFaithinthepast, andthereisnoreasontobelievetheir generositywillbewantingintheimmediatefuture.
Theperiodfollowingwarsisproverbiallyakindofopenseasonforlunatics ofvariouskinds.Itisnotsobad whenitisacaseofmobhysteria,for thistypeorthingcanusuallybeextinguishedbyawell-directedfirehose.But justnowitseemstobethepeoplein highplaceswhoaremakingfoolsof themselves.
Itallstartedovertheatomicbomb, whenaseriesofstatementsbyeminent scientistsonthesubjectof"thefreedomofnuclearenergy"revealedjust bowdangerousalunaticanintellectual manwithoutamoralsensemaybecome.Perhapsthedepthoffatuity andirresponsibilitywereplumbedby ProfessorEinsteinwhoenvisagedthe destructionoftwo-thirdsofthehuman race,butaddedwithmaniacaldetachment:"Thereshouldstillbeenoughintelligentmenandwomenleftintheretrainingthirdtomakeafreshstart!"

WhetherthepresentthreatofageneralstrikeistheworkoftheCommunists,asiscommonlyalleged,oranInsidiousplanbythemoneypowertodiscreditandbreakupthesystemofUnionism,itisquiteclearwheretheCommunistsstand.Mr.Sharkeyhaslet thecatcleanoutofthebag.Nomore nonsenseabouttheOutstretchedHand, theTrojanHorse,orCollectiveSecurity.

"ArsenicandOldLace,"byJoseph Kesselring,isdescribedontheprogrammeissuedbyJ.C.Williamson Ltd.,asa''sensationallysuccessful comedythriller."Atagiventimeand placeitmighthavebeenallthis,but theplacewasnotPerthandthetime wasnotlastSaturdaynight.
Theplaywasafarce.Noonelent itthetruetouchoffarcemoredefinitelythanB.Campbell-Gray,whoput upanexcellentperformance;noone didmoretoshattertherealityofthe dramathanClaudeFlemming.There isapointinjuxtaposingthecomments onthesetwoplayers;forwhileMr. Campbell-Grayworkedintelligentlyto bringthefarceintoforce,Mr.Flemming'workedmostunintelligentlyand wastheprimecauseofitsbeingoutof focus.
Attheriskoflabouringthepoint,I shallattempttoexplainwhatismeant bysayingthattheplaywasoutof focus.Itseemstomeaverygood wayofdescribingasituationwhere theactiveelementsintheplaywere pullingagainstoracrosseachother ratherthantogether,withtheresult thattheobserverdidnotreceivea clearimpressionofthe.realityofthe drama.Mr.Campbell-Gray(and others)succeededincreatinganatmospherefavourabletofarce,anatmosphereinwhichfarcecouldreallylive; butasoftenasMr.Flemmingcameon stagetheatmospherewasdestroyed, arviwewereawarethat no longerinapleasantdreamworldbut intheworldofMr.Flemming.
Itisunforgivablethataprofessional actorshouldbesocontemptuousofthe canonsofhisartastosacrificetheharmoniouswholeforthepart.Itisa causefordismaythatonememberof a-companycouldbesounmindfulof hisfellowsastodisorganisethedrama forthesakeofindulginghisownappetiteforclowning.Weretheclowning funnytherewouldstillbenoexcuse forit;.butthepainfultruthisthat rhemming'sstereotypedbuffoonery in"ArsenicandOldLace"isnotreally funnyatall,becauseitthrowshimentirelyoutofcharacter.Itbecomes increasinglyobviousthatClaudeFlemmingcanneverbeanythingmorethan justClaudeFlemming.
ThePlay.
Theplaymarksanadvanceinstandardonthiscompany'spreviousofferingTheplotisunusualandloaded withsurprises,andagreatdealofopportunityisgivenforcharacterisation andcaricature.Thethemecombines thehighinterestvaluesofmurderand lunacy.
Theopeningsceneisimpressive.We areimmediatelyattractedtothepeculiarpresenceofTeddyBrewster,who setsthemoodoftheplayandgivesan assurancethatsomethinginteresting andoutoftheordinarymaybeexpected.Itisimpossiblenottobe struckbyhisimmenseandcomicdignity,andhisairofdetachmentfrom hissurroundings.Theplayingof EthelGabrielandEricConwayisconvincing,too,andaltogetheronefeels thatthestageissetforagoodshow.
Aneveningoffourone-actplays wasrecentlypresentedbythePatch Theatre.Thegeneralimpression,was favourable,themoresoastheplays werelargelystudentsproductions,The weakestutteringoftheeveningwasW. W.Jacobs'"TheMonkeysPaw."Its mostseriousdefectwasintheproduction,(whichallowedthetempoofthe playtogallopmilesaheadofitsdramaticpotentialities.Adequatemakeupwasalsolacking,withtheresult thatMr.White(LionelNorthover) lookedhisage(veryyoung).However,LornaCoppinger,asMrs.White, andDonSmith,asHerbert,gavecon-. vincingperformances.RayBaxter,in theroleofSergeant-MajorMorris,was costumedinamodeverynearthe ridiculous,anunfortunatemistakemarringthepreliminarybuild-upofdramaticatmosphere.Theset(adapted from"Sheppey")wasnotthebest, "UnnaturalScene"wasproducedby IrisCoe,andsheactedthemajorrole ofMissBrowninaverycapablemanner.Thisplaywasconsistentlygood, theactinghonoursgoingtoLoisWeir forherexcellentcharacterisationof MissTompkinson.

FrankBradley,asLieutenantRooney,wasanotherexampleoffortuitous casting,andheplayedtherolewith plentyofverve,GwendaWilsondid nothavemuchtodo,butshecooperatedwellandmadeanattractive figure.Theothermembersofthe castwereefficientinminorroles.

ProductionwasbyMylesWrightand wasgenerallywelldone.Hewaseither unableorunwillingtorestrainMr. Flemming,andonthisscorehemust becondemned.Thesetwasvery good,thelightingandeffectswereadeiate.

ThesternmeasurestakenbytheGerman(Dutch)PopeHadrianVI.toeliminateabuses,were,perhaps,notprurientandgentleenoughtosucceed, butinanycasetheyendedinthebrevityofhisPontificate.ClementVII. wasnotoftheheroicstuffofaHildebrand,sothatrevolthadgrippedGermanyandEnglandbeforeadeterminedeffortwasmadetomeetthefearfullydifficultsituation.

TheprudentAlessandroFarnesewas electedasPaul11totheChairofSt. PeteronOctober13,1534.Though personallyverymuchofarenaissance prince,hereallysethishandtoreformandhappilybeganbyadorning theSacredCollegeofCardinalswith thelearningandvirtueofmenlike Gian Caraffa,Contarini,Sadoleto,.Cervini, Morone.Healso beganverysoonthediplomaticpre- parationsforaCouncil,whichwasto meetatMantuainthespringof1537.
Thisprojectwasnotrealised,Aikewise,thecallingoftheCouncilat \'ivenzahadtobeadjourned,andlater, aboutthemiddleof1539,suspended.
Thedifficultieswereenormous.Nevertheless,thePopecontinuedhis efforts.Trentwaschosenbecauseit wasintheGermandominionsandsufficientlyneartoGermany.Itwas hopedthattheCouncilcouldopen thereonAllSaints,1542Cardinals Parisi°,MoronsandPolewerechosen asLegates,butonceagainhopesfounderedontheattitudeoftheFrench King.whowasactuallyinleaguewith theTurks,andbegananewwarwith theEmperorCharlesV. Thelatter,dissatisfiedwiththePope's neutrality,sentoratorstoTrent,but noBishops.AsPopeandEmperor couldnotreachagreement,suspension wasagaindecreedinJuly,1542.SeepticssaidthatRomedidnotwantthe Council,butthePope'sthirdbigeffort carriedtheday,not,however,without severaldelays.

Finally,afternineyearsofnegotiationsandtrials,theCouncilwasopenedwiththepresenceofthethreeLegates,delMonte,Cervini,andPole, abovementioned,fourArchbishops,21 Bishops,half-a-dozenGeneralsofOrdersand47theologians.ThusTrent sawthesmallbeginningsofsomethingverygreatonGaudeteSunday, December13,1545.
Noprogrammeofdeliberationshad beendrawnup,andnostrictorderof procedure.TheRomanCuriaand thePapalLegatesregardedthedefinitionofdogmascontrovertedby-the Protestantsasthechieftaskofthe
Council,butboththeImperialHabsburgandtheHabsburgofSpain wanteddogmaticissuestobeavoided, inviewofthefuturereunionofthe Protestants.
TheCouncil,theythought,should confineitselftodecreesofmoraland ecclesiasticalreform.OnJanuary22, 1546,acompromisewasreachedonthe matter,anditwasdecidedthatdogmaticandreformdecreesshouldbe discussedsimultaneouslybyseparate Congregationsoftheologiansandcanonists.Thedraftedproposalswere gtoeter.behs.etbeforetheGeneralSessionsto-

TheplanoftheWestralianHierarchy,outlinedinourlast issue,tobringtothisStatesometwothousandwarorphansand poorchildrenofbothsexes,representsacommencementinthe mostpressingofournationalproblems.Notonlyhavewetoreplacethetensofthousandsofyoungmenwhofellintherecent titanicstruggle,butalsothesixdivisionsofpotentialcitizenswho havebeenlostthroughcontraceptionoverthepast60years.Already,inthiscountry,wearebeginningtoexperiencetheeconomicburdenswhichaseriousdisplacementoftheagegroupingof thecommunitymustbringabout.Theprovisionoflarge-scale socialserviceswillworkoutonlywhenthereisaproperandstable proportionbetweenthenumberofbeneficiariesandthenumber ofable-bodiedproducers.Thiseconomicbalanceobviouslycannotbemaintainedbynaturalincrease,andthereisnogroundto believethatthefutureholdsanybrighterprospectsfortheAustralianbirth-rate.Henceasthebestimmigrant-theAustralian baby-isinscarcesupply,wemustturnelsewheretorenewthe lifestocksofthenation.
Immigrationisbynumeansasimpleproblem.Itiscomplicatedbyeconomicfactorsbothhereandabroad,bypoliticalconsiderationsandbyracialprejudice.Butthismuchiscertain: Statisticsfromallovertheworldproveconclusivelythaturban civilisationsaredoomedtoextinction.Theyareonlyableto carryonbydepletingruralcommunities.Farmingfolk,onthe otherhand,continuetoreproducethemselvesdespiteadverseeconomicconditions.Now,ifthechiefvalueofhistoryisitsvalue asaguidetopresentactivity,Australiawoulddowelltonotethis phenomenon.Forithasbeenshownalso.,thatwhereruralstocks havebeentransplantedtocities,theirfertilityrapidlytendedtodecline;theywereabsorbedbytheirenvironment.,Hence,inseekingtoimportpopulationtheprimaryconsiderationshouldbe whethertheimmigrantsarelikelytobeasourceofpermanent ormerelytemporaryhumanreplacement.Thiscanonlybeassuredbytheintroductionofruralstockswhichalreadyhavea highbirth-rate.ButtherealityoftheAustraliansceneisthat ourruralareasareinseriousdecline,thecitiesthrivingbybleedingthecountryside.Howcanthisrothestemmed?
Thisisthecruxofthewholematter,anditispreciselyhere thatthewisdomoftheBishops'planismostapparent.Theydo notproposetointroduceadultsofruralstockswhomaysoonbecomediscouragedbyfarmingconditionsanddrifttothecities. Rathertheyaimtobringoutchildrenofatenderage,toplace themininstitutionsremovedfromthemetropolis,wheretheymay growwithaloveandknowledgeoftheland.Itisfurtherproposedtohelpestablishthosewhoshowaptitudeontheirownholdings.Ofcourse,noteverychildwillfinditsvocationinruralpursuits,andfortheseadequatepreparationisbeingmadesothatthe childrenmaybetaughttradesandsopreparedtofacetheresponsibilitiesofcitizenship.Anotherexcellentfeatureofthe schemeisthatitwillcaterforbothsexes,fortoupsetdrastically thesexcompositionofacommunityisasunwiseastodisorganise theagecomposition.TheChurchwas.faraheadofthepresentdayradicalsintheenunciationofsocialtheory,anditisbothfittingandpleasingthatitisabletogiveaboldyetprudentandpracticalleadinthismosturgentproblemo'frepopulation.Atbest thewarwithJapanispostponed.Asiapressesfromthenorth, andthemosteffectiverampartwecanraiseisahumanone.

Theeleventhandtwelfthsessions werepreparatory.Thethirteenthpublishedtheveryimportantdecreeonthe HolySacramentoftheAltar(without decisionontheconcessionofthechalicetothelaityandonthecommunionofchildren),The"rightsofDiehopsoverdiocesanclergywerethesubjectofthedisciplinarydecree.The doctrineofPenanceandExtremeUnctionwasformulatedinthefourteenth session,andrulesfortheordination anddisciplineofclerics.
Bythistime,Protestantdelegates hadappearedatTrent.TheydemandedfreedomfromPapalcontrol andrecognitionoftheprinciplesof Constance(theCouncilabovethe Pope).Reopeningofdiscussiononall mattersalreadydecreedwasalsodemanded,andtwoProtestantconfessionsoffaith(BrenzandMelanchthon) were presented.
Theresultofthisconfusionwasthat thealreadyprepareddecreesonthe SacrificeoftheMass were notpassedatthefifteenthsessionof January25,1552.Thebetrayalofthe EmperorbyMauriceofSaxonyendangeredtheassembly,andatthesixteenthsession(April28)itwasadjournedoncemore.
Neithertheshortreignofthenoble Pontiff,MarcellusII.,northeunhappy reignofthesternPaulIV.,broughtthe Counciltolifeagain,WiththePontificateofPiusIV.thedestiniesofthe Churchlargelycameintothehandsof asaint,whosepastoralmeritshines withparticulargloryintheChurch's episcopalfirmament.PiusIV.,zealouslysupportedbyCardinalBorromeo, hisnephew,decidedthattheTridentinumshouldbecontinued.

"Yearslater,"thelettercontinues, /'aftertheAmericansha4liberated .partsofLuzon,Balayanfacedanew crisis.Thetownwasgarrisonedby threehundredandfiftyJapanese,who knewitwouldnotbelongbeforeArne1"antroopswoulddrivetheirwayin. TheseJapanesehadorderstoburn Balayanbeforetheyretreated.
Sir,-"DeGustibus"askedin"The Record"ofNovember14whatisthe valueoftheRepertorypreviewsystem?Thequestionis,Ithink,a rhetoricalone,foraswebothhave manyandpleasantcontactswiththe RepertoryClubheknowstheanswer aswellasIdo.
Butforthebenefitof"Record"readersletusputitthisway:During themistyearormoreregularpatrons ofRepertoryproductionswereavoidingthefirstnightsofseasonswhich Weregettingtoomuchlikepoordress .ar,aisinmanyinstances.The reasonsmayhavebeendifficultyin castingwithsomanymembersonservice,andthepreoccupationofplayers withotherformsofwarwork,but whateverthereasons,thepositionwas .;shctoryandthoseresponsible decidedtotryapsychologicalapproach :otheproblemintheformofapreviewandtheintensivepreparation whichthatentails.
Nowapreviewhas,as"DeGustibus" pointsout,abox-officeadvantage, endastheRepertoryisplayingfor charitythisisnottobeignored.Prior tothewartheRep.playedtoitsown members(whocouldinvitemembers ofthepublic)andwasnotinterested inthebox-officeangle,becauseitpaid itswayoutofsubscriptions.Butthe really;mnortanteffectofapreviewis itseffectontheplayers.Theyget thestimulusofanaudience(evenifit isanartificialone),whenitismost necessary,andthatis.beforetheyactuallyappearbeforeagenuineaudience.
Ontheotherhand.audiences,knowingthattherehasbeenapreview, canfeelconfidentofagoodfirstnight. Andnotonlyistheirconfidencejustified,butcharitiesaregettingthe benefitoffirstnightbookings.
In"DeGustibus'"pointaboutaudienceco-operationIdetectaconfusion ofthought.Audienceco-operationis ofgreatassistance,butisnotactually necessary.Considertheradioplay. Thereisnoaudiencestimulusordramaticsituationwhichmakesitforthe Waverles,satisfying.Theradioplay isneverthelessabsenceofaudience Inmyopinionitsresultsareobtained bycarefulandonemightsayrigorousproduction.
Onthelegitimatestagetheplayer cangetsowrappedupinthepartas toforgetallabouttheaudience,and itssizewillbeoflittleconsequence providedhehasnotbeentoldornot peeredacrossthefootlightstoseefor himself.Ofcourse,iftheplayeris one(whoplaysforlaughsor"to.the audience,"Icanunderstandtheneed ofanaudience,butItrust"De'Gustibus"isnotoneofthese.
Tosaythatpreviewaudiencesare handpickedisliabletocreateaderogatoryimpression.Theaudienceis carefullyselectedfromthosemembers andnon-memberswhocanberegardedascompetentcritics,Ifanymembercouldbepersuadedtobesostrongmindedastoriseandshout"Louder," thenthatmemberwouldbeassuredof apermanentseatatpreviews.The troubleliesnotintheselectionbutin thesoftheartednessofaudiences.

OnonefinalcountImustprotest, however.Nocasthaseverrefusedto co-operateinplayingapreview.In someinstancescertainmembersofa castcouldnotplayonaccountofprior engagementsoflongstanding,which isquiteadifferentthing.Onthe otherhand,IknowthatthereisresistancetothepreviewbysomemembersandIknowthatsomeplayers feelthattheyaresogoodthatthey shouldnotbesubjectedtothefancied indignityofapreview.Butthat, again,isanotherstory.
