WhytheFastBeforeHoly Communion? .

ExcusingCausesinSpecialCases

Vurious,"Maylands:

'Q.:WhydoestheChurchinsistonthe EucharisticFast?TheApostlesreceivedHolyCommunionandwere notfasting.

A.:ItistruethatOurLordinstitutedtheBledEucharistattheLast SupperandthattheApostlesreceived theSacramentaftertheyhadeatenthe Pasch.Itisalsotruethattheearly Christiansforsometimeobservedthe customcalledtheAgapeorLoveFeast, whentheyateanddranktogetherand afterwardsreceivedtheBlessedEucharist.Butthiscustomwastheoccasionforabuse,asSt.Paulrevealsin thesecondepistletotheCorinthians, chapter2.Thepracticeofreceiving HolyCommunionfastingbegantotake itsplaceevenintheApostolicage,asa result,probably,ofSt.Paul'scomplaints.Anyhow,thepracticewasuniversalbythetimeofSt.Augustine (fourthcentury)andhascontinued eversince.

Theprincipalreason, ofcourse, for theintroductionoffastingbeforeHoly Communionwasreverenceforthe BodyandBloodofChrist, whichthe Churchwishedthefaithfultoreceive beforetheyhadtakenfoodanddrink. Besidesfastinginitselfisapenitential preparationforthisholySacrament.

Q.:WhatexactlyistheEucharistic fastanyhow?

A.:TheChurch,byagraveprecept, obligesthosewhowishtoreceiveHoly Communiontoabstainfromfoodand drinkfromthepreviousmidnight.For violationofthispreceptthreeconditionsarenecessary:

1.Whateveristakenmusthavethe natureoffoodordrink.Asregards food,thismeanswhateverisdigestible, andasregardsdrink,anyliquidwhatever.

2.Thefoodordrinkmustbetaken intothestomachfromoutsidethe mouth.Hence,garglingthemouthor throat,unlessaquantityisswallowed, doesnotbreakthefast.Nordoesthe swallowingofbloodfromabruised gumbreakthefastsinceitcomesfrom inside,
