Hadyoubeenafugitivefromthe justiceoftheFrenchlawcourtsinthe mid-nineteenthcentury,seekinga:emotehide-out,youmightwellhavehit upontheout-of-the-wayvillageofLourdesastheleastofalltheinsignificant placesinFrance.Situatedinthe 'oath-westerncornerofthecountry,in thefoothillsbetweentheBassesand thelIantesPyrenees,,withineasyreach ofthtSpanishborder,Lourdeswas utterlyremotefromtheworld.You mighthave:eltsafeinthishamlet, butyoucouldscarcelyhavegrownto loveitsstragglingcobbledstreets,its dirtandpoverty,anditsairofincurablesomnolence.
IIadyoulingeredlonginthehamlet youmustverysoonhavemadetheacquaintanceofFrancoisSoubirous,one oflife'sfailures,Oncehehadbeen 'mallmillerontheRiverGave,but businesshadfailedandheandhis !aril}nowlivedinconsiderablepoverty.TheylivedintheRuedespetits Fosses,inasunkenhovelofstone, formerlyaprisoncell.Francoishad franklylostheart,hadgrownlazy, andwassomewhataddictedtothebeniusomentwhichalcoholcangive.
Inhisfamily/werefourchildren,two boysandtwogirls.Theeldestgirl, Bernadette,wasadelicatechildsufferingconstantlyfromasthma.There wasnothingtodistinguishherfrom herbrothersandsisters,orindeedfrom anyofthechildrenoftheneighbourhoodunlessitwasherextremeignorance.Shewasapiouschild,submissivetoherparents,humbleinthe manymenialtasksofapoorhome,ana devotedtotheRosary-theonlyform ofprayerwithwhichshewasacquainted.
OntheeleventhofFebruary,18511, Bernadette,withhersisterMarieanda friend,JeanneAbadie,crossedthe ancientbridgeconnectingwiththeleft bankoftheRiverGavetocollectfire wood.Bytheriverhank,closetothe spotwhereitcouldbeeasilyfordedwas alargerockcalledMassabielle.Inits facewerethreesingularexcavations.
Oneformedalargenaturalcavern,and totheright,abovethecave,wasa cleftintherockresemblinganichein achurch.Itwasawild,desolate place,usedbythetownauthoritiesas arubbishdepot. Whiletheothertwogirlswaded throughtheicywatertotheother bank,Bernadettehesitatedonaccount ofherhealth,andhopingtofindaway acrosswithoutwettingherfeet.De cidingatlasttorisktheadventure, shewasstartledbyafierceupsurgeof windthroughthevalley.Strangely thetreesbytheriversidewereperfectlymotionless, Itwasbythencloseuponmidday. Bernadetteconcludedthatshehad beenmistaken,and,thoughstilalittle mystified,againstoppedtoremoveher sabots.Butoncemorethestrange

Awhite veilhungfromthebackofherhead downtothehemoftherobe,envelop. inghershouldersandarms.Herfeet, whichwerehare,restedupontherock, lustlightlypressingthewildrose branch.anduponeachfoottherewas agoldenrose.Sheworenojewels, butsuspendedfromtheclaspedfingers ofheralabaster-likefingerswasaRot-

ThesewordsofOurDivineSaviour are,nodoubt,familiartoyou.This morninginthechurchesofyourrespectiveparishes,youhadplacedbeforeyoueloquently,inthesermons,the needsofthosesoulswhomtheRedeem. erhadinmindwhenHespokethose wordsofmytext,andyourownobligationsinrespectofgivingassistance, spiritualandtemporal,tothosesame souls.
Itis,therefore,mypurposethisafternoontoendeavourfurthertostimulateyourzealfortheforeignmissions, byrecountingafewfactsandafewincidentsfrommyownpersonalexperienceinthemissionaryfieldofthe PhilippineIslands.Ithasbeenmy privilegetotakesomeshare,however small,duringthepastsixyearsin thelaboursthereofthemissionariesof theRedemptoristOrder.
Althoughthewarhasspreadthe knowledgeofthatcountry,fromageographicalandmilitarystandpoint, amongotherpeoples,nevertheless,its religiousconditionispracticallyunknown.
ThePhilippineIslandswerediscoveredbytheSpanishintheyear1521, andcolonisedbythemlateroninthe century.Spain,beingathoroughly Catholicnation,andhavingtherefore atruemissionaryspirit,missionaries wereimmediatelydespatchedinlarge numberstothePhilippineIslands.As aresultofthatmissionaryzealspread overaperiodofmorethan300years, to-dayoutofapopulationofapproximately16millions,morethan12millionbelongtotheCatholicFaith.Such afactpresentsaverybrightpicture, nodoubt.But,unfortunately,there areotherfactswhichdim,cloudover thisbrilliantprospect.Duringthe 19th.centuryaseriesofrebellions againstthethenoppressiveSpanish ruleweakenedtheinfluenceofthe Church,andthesewerefinallyclimaxedbytheinsurrectioninstigatedby anti-clericalsinEurope,of1898,when largenumbers,.ifnotmost.ofthe Spanishpriests,friarsandnunswere eitherkilledordrivenfromthecountry.OntopofthiscamethesurrenderoftheSpanishtotheAmericansafterthedecisivenavalbattleof ManilaBay,in1898,afterwhichthe -governmentoftheIslandswastaken overbytheAmericans,Fromthat timeon,thatisforaperiodofover 45years,thepriestsandreligiousteachershavenotbeenreplaced,theAmericansystemofpublicschoolshasbeen established,andintheseschoolsitis notpermittedtoteachreligion.More. over,becauseofthepovertyofthe people,ithasbeenimpossibletosupportCatholicschools,exceptinafew rareinstances.Theresultofthisis, ofcourse.awidespreadindifference amongthepeopletothepracticesof theirHolyFaith,toattendanceat SundayMass,andthefrequentationof theSacraments,ofConfessionand HolyCommunion.
Suchastateofaffairsisbutnatural underthecircumstances.Itisnot unusualtofindaparishof,say.20,000 souls,allclaimingallegiancetothe CatholicChurch.vetwithnoCatholic schoolandhavingbutone,oratmost,
twopriests.OneparishinManila, thecapitalcity,hadbeforethewara populationofmorethan50,000souls. yettoservethesethousandsweretwo nativepriests,oneofthemnewlyordainedandofverydelicatehealth. Now,itisimpossibleforoneortwo prieststoadministertheSacraments tosolargeapopulatoninoneyear andatthesametimetoattendtoother parochialduties,evenifthepeopleso desiredtoreceivetheSacraments;nor couldsomanypeoplebeaccommodatedintheChurch,largeasthechurches areinthePhilippineIslands,atthe SundayMasses.Hencethepeoplebecomeaccustomedtoomittingthese practices,andbeingalsowithoutinstruction,theysinkintoastateofindifference.However,thereisstilla brightpatchleftinthepicture,and onewhichgivesgreathopeforthe future,ifsufficienthelpcanbebrought tothesepeopleintimefromoutside Itcommonlyhappenstheworldover, thatwhenCatholicsaccustomthemsel yestotheomissionofSundayMass andtheSacraments,theyverysoon losetheFaithaltogether.God,to punishthem,caststhemoff.Thishas notbeenthecasewiththePhilipino people,andthisfactIattributetoa specialprovidenceofGod,Who,inHis infiniteWisdomunderstands,thatthis stateofindifferencehasitscauses,not withthepeoplethemselves,butwith circumstancesbeyondtheircontrol.
ActuallythePhilipinosareapeople ofgoodwill.TheyacceptedtheFaith veryreadilyinthebeginning,andthey arestilldeeplyattachedtotheCatholicreligion.Faithisstillthere,and asproofofit,noself-respectingPhilopinowillgowithoutBaptismifitis atallpossibleofreception.Parents seetoitthattheirchildrenarebaptisedandbaptisedintheCatholic Church.OneofourFathersmadea journeybeforethewartoanoutlying island.whosepeoplehadnotseena priestforupwardsof20years.He foundthatduringallthoseyearsthe peoplehadreceivedtheSacramentof Baptismfromthehandsofacertain gentlemanlivingontheisland,who hadbeendeputedforthisspecialwork. Unfortunatelyhehadnotbeenusing theproperformofwords,aswasdiscoveredonenquiry,soallthepeople werebroughttogetherand,since Fatherhadnotthetimetobaptiseall singly,hegavethemBaptismbyaspersion.
Theyhavealsothecustomofinfant Confirmation.Everythreeyears, whentheBishopoftheDiocesecomes tomakehisvisitationoftheparish,all thebabiesbornduringthepastthree yearsarebroughttothechurchfor Confirmation.IassistedaBishopon oneoccasionatthisceremony.There werepresentinthatchurchmorethan 700infants.Youknowwhatpan. demoniumoneinfantcanstirupina church;700ofthem!Ileaveitto yourimagination.
TheSacramentofExtremeUnction isneveromittedifapriestcanbe broughttothesickperson.Anda Philipinoballapeculiargeniusfor callingthepriestjustattheright time,
Anotherfactwhichhelpstokeep alivethefaithofthePhilipinoishis fondnessfor,andfaithfuldevotionto, theexternalobservancesofourreligion,ofwhichagreatvarietywere taughtthembytheSpanishmissionaries.Particularlyisthistobeseen duringHolyWeek,whenthewhole Passionisactedbymenandwomen

Thetown"fiesta,"orfeastofthePatronSaint,isthegreatdayoftheyear forallPhilippineIslandtownsand villages;infact,itisusuallyathreedayaffair.Themendressupintheir "Sunday"clothes,theonlytimeoutsidethedayoftheirmarriagethat theysogarbthemselves.Thewhole towngoesonholiday,-bandsparade thestreets,circusesandside-showsare inattendance.ButthewholefestivalbeginswithSolemnHighMassin thegreatstonechurchinthecentreof thetown,anditendswithacandlelightprocessionatnightthroughthe streetsofthetown,inwhichiscarried onanornamented,oftenentirelysilver,carriage,thestatueofthePatron Saint.
Eveninplaceswherethereisno priest,thepeoplewillcometogether andcelebratetheir"fiesta,"aswellas holdingotherprocessionsofwhichthey areveryfondatvarioustimesofthe year.Thisholds,especiallyinMay, themonthofMary,wheneverynight aprocessionismade,afterwhichdevotionsareheldbeforeastatueof Maryplacedeitherinthechurchorin somedwellinghouse.Itiscustomary insomeplacesforthevariousfamilies totaketurnseachnightinhaving Marythushonouredintheirhomes. ThesetwodevotionstothePassion ofOurSaviourandtoHisBlessed Mother,sopopularamongthePhilipinopeople,surelyshedabrightbeam ofhopeuponthefutureoftheChurch inthePhilippineIslands.Itisnot unusualtoseeamanorwomankneelinginthechurchbeforetheCrucifix coveringitwithkisses,andonGood Fridaythechurchesarepackedfor thethreehoursduringwhichispreachedthegreatsermonontheSevenLast Words,Moreover,itiscustomary inmanyhomesduringPassiontidefor familiestouniteeveryeveningin chantinginthenativetonguethePassionofChristaspresentedinthefour Gospels.Thischantinggoesonat timesfortwoorthreehours,sometimes intheearlyhoursofthemorning.
Asregardstheirpersonalcharacteristics,thePhilipinosareofMalayan stock,muchlikethepeopleyouwould seeintheStraitsSettlements,Singeport,Java,Sumatra,etc.,brownincolourandofaverypleasingappearance
generally,ofsimple,homelywaysand gentle.Theymanifestanabounding hospitalitytothestrangerandinturn areveryresponsivetowardsan:,kindnessthatisshownthem.
Theyareextremelyfondofmusic andarethemselvesexceptionallygood musicifns.Indeedthebrassbandis anindispensableinstitutionthere.The bandmustbeinattendanceat -fiestas.'DuringtheSolemnMassit willstrikeupaftertheConsecration anddeliverthemostlivelytunes.It ispresentatbaptisms,weddings,birthdayparties;anditisasignofgreat povertyandaloosoffaceifyoucannotprovideabandforyourfuneral, whenitwillrenderanysortofmusic from"Tipperary"toBeethoven's"Concerto:* Mydearbrethren,sucharethepeople,theircharacteristics,theirreligious condition,ofthePhilippineIslands. Theyarealovablepeopleandwell worthyofourattentionandgenerosity.Agreattragedyhasoverwhelmedthem,Thewarhasbroughtto themheavylossesoflifeandproperty.
Thereyetremainswiththemtheir greatesttreasure,theirCatholicFaith. Agreatertragedythreatensthatalso:ThegreatscarcityofPriests,Brothers andNunshasbeenincreased.bykillingsduringthewar.Thewholestaff ofpriests,:4x,inonebigparishinManilawerewipedout.FifteenGerman andtwoIrishLaSalleBrothersin ManilaweremassacredbytheJapanesewhenthelatterweretrappedinthe citybytheAmericanForces.And manymorehavebeeneitherkilledor incapacitated.Theirchurcheshave beendestroyed.InManila,outof morethan20churches,onlythreeor fourremainstanding.
TheRedemptoristFathersofthe AustralianProvincehavetwofoundationsontheprincipalIslandofLuzon, oneinManila,theotherinTipa,60 milessouth.BythemercyofGod andthroughthegraciousprotection ofOurMotherofPerpetualSuccour, notoneofourpersonnellosthislife. ButthehouseofLipaanditschurch wereutterlydestroyed,andwhilethe. houseandchurchinManilawereas' thoughmiraculouslypreservedintact, thefurnishings,includingmanyexpensivesetsofMassvestmentsandthe Fathers'library,wereentirelylost.

Letusbeclearonthisissue.Catholicsbelievethatitisgrievously wrongonSundaysinindulgeinunnecessaryworkwhichisofaservilecharacter.Theydonotbelievethatorganisedsportcaninanysensebeconstruedasworkorthat,religiousduties beingfulfilled,itviolatestheSabbath. Thereisaliteralismabouttheprecept oftheSundayrestabroadamongthe FreeChurcheswhichisunreasonable andthereforeirritating.Onewonders

Thecontestprovidesthepublicwith anopportunityofhearingandjudgingtheabilityoftheyouthfulartists, notmerelyasholdersofcertificates, hutasperformers.Itenablestheperformers,too,toappearinpublicunder idealconditions:foraconcerto-a workwhichisplayedbyasoloinstrumentwithanorchestra-isatoncethe mostexactingandthemostsatisfying formofinstrumentalwork.

AttheAssemblyHallonMonday evening,November5,theC.G.M.concludedtheirseventhconcertseasonin Thepresenceofalargeandappreciative audience.Althoughafewoftheitems weremildlyentertaining,thisreviewer mustsadlyconfessthatonthewhole theshowwasdisappointing.This opinionwasalsosharedwithafew othermembersoftheaudiencewho couldnotbeincludedamongtheproud parentsadmiringaunts,cooingcousins thatformedthebulkoftheaudience.

ASportsCarnivalintheafternoon, followedbyaconcertatnight,brought toanendtheuntiringworkandorganisingonbehalfofthePrincesses,al ofwhomwereunderfiveyearsofage.
Aftertheinterval,FatherCameron, P.P.,announcedthefinalresulttoa packedhall.ThewinnerwasthePrincessofWyalkatchem(MaureenByrne), with£181-43,440votes.ShewascloselyfollowedbythePrinessofMinnievale(PatriciaDolan),with£17518sAd -42,225votes.ThirdwasthePrincess ofKoorda(JosephineGallagher),with £156I&7d-37,663votes,andinfourth place,thePrincessof.Korrelocking (ShirleyHamond),with£9617s9d23,253votes-bringingthegrandtotal to£81015sId.Asthisfiguredoes notincludetheproceedsofsportsand concert,thefinalamountshouldbein thevicinityof£700.

Bernadette'smotherandfatherwere naturallybothperplexedandalarmed andthouvhconvincedofthesincerityof theirchild,couldnotridtheirminds ofthefeelingthattheapparitionwas adelusion.Tnspiteofthis,however, theydidnotforbidBernadetteto keepawayfromMassabielle.
Inspiteofthemselvesthevillagers' interesthadbeenexcitedandtwo women,MadameMilletandMademois ellePevret,haddeclaredtheirintentionofaccompanyingBernadetteon hernextvisit.Onthe18th.February, afterassistingatMass,thethreetook theirwaytoMassabielle.Bernadette immediatelykneltdownandbeganrecitingtheRosary,andinafewmo mentsthetwowomen,observingthe ecstaticfeaturesofthegirl.knewthat thevisionhadappearedonceagain. TheBaths.erectedin1879,inwhich invalidpilgrimsareimmersed,areto beencounteredinwalkingbetweenthe GrottoandtheRosaryChurch.The wateristhatofthemiraculousfountain,carriedthencebymeansofpipes. "Godrinkofthefountain,andwash init,"OurLadydirected.Millions ofpersonsbynowhavedoneso,sid ferersfromeveryformofmalady,even themostmalignant.Andrepeatedly thewaterhasbeentested,butnogerm orpollutionofanydegreehasbeen found.Neitherhasthereeverbeen knownamongthosewhogivetheirservicesasattendantsattheBathsthe slightestsuggestionofcontagion.
