Bearinginmind,then,thetwopurposesofeducation-characterand knowledge-whathasbeentheresult ofStateintervention theneutral school?Hastheneutralschoolmet the.wishesoftheparentsinregardto characterbuildingandtraining?I aminclinedtosaythatithasnot. Theparentsofthefirstchildrentoattendtheneutralschoolrepresentedon thewholeaChristiancommunity.As lateas1911, percent.ofAustralians whofurnishedcensusreturnsstated thattheybelongedtosomeChristian denomination.Evenby1933thepercentagewasstillupwardsof90per cent.,whileinaGalluppollconducted somemonthsagonearly80percent. ofallparentsthoughtthatreligiousinstructionshouldbegiveninschools.

Ithink,then,thatitissafetosay thatthegreatmajorityoftheparents towardstheendofthelastcentury, whentheneutralschoolwasintroduced,wouldhavewishedtheirchildren instructedinChristianprinciplesand broughtuponChristianlines.Has theneutralschool,then,givenevery opportunitytothechildrenofAustraliatogrowupasChristiancitizens? Theanswercanonlybeno.

Bywayofananalogy,letusconsideracommunityofpeoplewhoarepassionatelyfondofmusicandwhowish theirchildrentohaveeveryopportunityofacquiringmusicalknowledgeand proficiency.TheydifferSharply,however,astothetypeofmusictheyprefer;somearehigh-browandsomeare low-browinthesamesenseassome areHighChurchandsomeareLow Church.Tosettlethedifficultyofarbitratingthesedifferences,theState decidesthatitwillteachnomusic whateverinitsschools,andthatitwill notsubsidiseanyschoolsinwhich musicistaught.Itwillletmusiclook afteritself,andindeedbyitsveryattitudewillteachthechildtodiscount theimportanceofmusic.Nowsuch aschoolmayturnoutsomeverycreditablescientists,butnoblamecould belaidatitsdooriftheawfuldiscoverywasmadethatsomehoworother

ithadproducedachildwhocouldplaythescaleofCmajor.TheState'sattitudewouldbeiftheparentswant theirchildrentaughtmusic,letthem teachitthemselves,andthenthe,' proceedtogivethechildhomeworkto ocupyitstimeathome.Italsoentirelybegsthequestionthatmanyof theparentshaveneitherthetimenor therequisiteabilitytogivesuchinstruction.

Similarly,theneutralschoolisadistinctimpedimenttotheparentwho wisheshischildtobebroughtupa Christian.Itthusfailsinthefirst necessityofcharacterbuilding.But, moreover,seculareducationisavery incompleteformofeducation.Itcannotprovidetheanswertoalotofinterestingquestions.Tocarryonthe musicalanalogy-ifyouaregoingto omitmusicaltogetherfromtheschools, youwilleitherhavetoignoreortoprovidealternativeexplanationsforamultitudeofotherthings.Youwillprobablyendupbydescribingdancingas aninterestinghabitsomepeoplehave ofdescribingmathematicalpatterns withtheirfeetonthefloor.Youmay mayaddfurtherthatforsomeodd reasonmanypeoplealsoliketohave thisexerciseaccompaniedbymusical noises-forwhichconsiderationthey generallyhavetopaythepiperinthe samesenseastheCatholichastopay thepriest.

Ihavealreadyreferredtotheexistenceofcertainsocialcodeslimiting theuse'sanypersonmaymakeofhis knowledge.Theteacherintheneutralschoolsmaybesuccessfulinpreventingthechildfrombreakingsome ofthesecodes,but,ifheistobestrictlyneutral.hewillgivehimnoidea,or atleastaveryincompleteidea,of whysuchcodesexistatall.Thatis whypeopletalknowadaysoftheneed forteachingtheprinciplesofsocialbehaviourinschools,becauseindirectly theyrealisetheweaknessthatcomes fromnotteachingChristianity.

servedbymostmensince.Johnny maycontinuetowearclothes,buthe willprobablyquiterightlyfeelina dimwaythatthereissomethingintellectuallyunsatisfactoryaboutthe wholesituation.Hemaynotgrow uptopracticenudism,buthemay cometoseenothingwronginnear nudism.Hemayfinditquiteincredibletoknowthathecannottorture theteacherifhefeelsthemoodofa Borneohead-huntercominguponhim, butwhenhecomestoconsiderthe questionthatEuropewassplitonthe questionofindulgences,or,worststill, thattheReformationhappened becauseoftheindissolubilityofthe SacramentofMatrimony.whichhe doesnotunderstand,hemaywellgive upindismay.

Ihavebeentryingtopointoutthat insofarasthesecularschoolignores spiritualvaluesittendstomaterialism, andinsofarasitignoresChristianityit itgivesaveryincompletepictureof theworldaboutus,whichisstillsupposedlyaChristiancivilisation.

ButactuallytheneutralschoolpresentsamuchgreaterdangertoChristianityinsofarasitsubjectstheunformedmindofthechildtoallsorts ofmaterialistictheories.Though Christianityhasananswertomostof thephenomenonaroundus,thechild isencouragedtoseekalternativeexplanations.Helookstotheteacher forguidance,andmayfindoutthat theteacherisdrawinghisownopinionsfromsomefashionablematerialisticthinkerofthelastcentury.He maylearninhisresearchesinto geologythatbecausetheworldisso old,Godistooyoungtohavecreated it.Ifyouadoptanattitudeofneutralitytomusic,youcan'tblamethe childifhecomestolikejazz.Ifyou ignoremusicandteach.thechildthe physicaltheorynfsound,youcannot complainifhecomestolookonthe physicsteacherasthebrightestofall musicians.

Furthermore,theneutralschoolproducesamajorityofpersonswholeave schoolatfourteen,andthenimagine thattheyaresufficientlyeducated. Shakingofftheshacklesoftheschoolroom,theyfeelperfectlyfreetodevotethemselvestomaterialpursuits. Theyfeelthatreligionisasubject scarcelyworthyofanintelletualinterest.Now,Iamnotsayingthatthis istobedeplored;Iamnotevensayingthatsuchacommunitycouldnot beahappycommunity;butitcould scarcelybecalledaChristiancommunity.Indeed,itwillprobablyevolve somenewreligionaltogether,whether itbetheworshipofmanortheworshipofthemachine.Afewyearsago

inMoscowoneofthefeaturesofa balletwasthehumaninterpretationof agreatmachineinaction.Thedancersinaveryrealsensebecamethe cogsinthemachine.Now,-whatever wemaythinkofsuchaperformance andtheaestheticpleasureitmight give,itiscertainlytypicalofanew culturewhichhasbrokenwiththetraditionsoftheancientculture,We mighthear,forexample,ofafishing communityinBrittanygivingafish supper,butwescarcelyexpectthem tobesoservile,somaterialistic,asto turnonafishballet.WedonotexpectthemtosetuptheSignofthe Fishbywhichtheygettheirdaily breadinoppositiontotheringonthe handoftheFishermaninRome,inthe samewayasMoscowhassetupthe signofthehammerandsickle.We donotexpectthepresidentofoneof thosewell-organisedFrenchfishingcooperativestoopenthemeetingofthe guildwiththeprayerwhichhascome tousfromMexico,"OurSocialism, whichartonearth,hallowedbethy name.Thykingdomcometothecountryaswellastothetown,"

TomaintainourChristiancivilisation,then,religionmustberestored totheschools.Thismeanseitherthe reconstructionofthedenominational schoolorthegivingofsomeChristian instructionintheStateschools.

Iamawarethatsomepeoplesayit isnotfairtoimpartreligiousdogma tothechild.Theysaythatitought tobeallowedtomakeupitsown mindwhenitgrowsup.Ithinkitis justassensibletosaytoanationof 'asparaguseatersthatyoushouldnot teachachildtoeatasparaguswhenit isyoung,becauseitmayfindthatit willgiveitindigestionwhenitgrows up.Themostobviouswayofpreventingachildfrommakingupits mindaboutreligioustruthistopreventitfromfindingoutanything aboutreligiousdogmawhenitis young,especiallyinitsimpressionable adolescentyears.Ifyourdislikeof theChristiandoctrineofmodestyimpelsyoutopreventJohnnyfromwearinganyclothesatall,younotonly makehimarathersingularcreature, butyoualsoeffectivelydenyhimthe pleasureofdressingupasaRedIndian,becauseyouthinkthatatsome futuredatehemaybeunabletopreventhimselffrombeingtrussedup likeamummyorlikeaChristian.

Christ,inpreachingthe"gospelof theKingdom,"taughttheneedof keepingtheCommandmentsofGod wholeheartedly,inthoughtanddesire, aswellasact:andtoillustratethis doctrinereferredtosomeofthem.In doingsoIleintroducedanothertheme, athemethatwillrecurconstantlyin Histeaching,thethemeofChristian Charity,orloveofone'sfellowmen.

Christiancharity,thereforeisall embracing;itpersistsinspiteofopposition,affrontandenmity,becauseit seesinmantheimageofGod,Allof whichissummedupbyChristinHis replytothePhariseesastowhichis thegreatcommandmentofthelaw, "ThoushaltlovetheLordthyGod withthywholeheart,andwiththy

HereagainImustputyourightinregardtoCatholicdoctrine,Firstofall theChurchholdsustoa"specialcreation"inthecaseofman.Butthe Churchdoesnotdefinethemannerof thisspecialcreation.-Thereforewithinthetheoryoftheevolutionofnaturalformsoflivingcreatures,itisquite compatiblewithCatholicteachingto holdthebeliefoftheinfusionofa spiritual,immortalsoulintoanalreadyexistentlivingform.

Iamnotsaying,ofcourse,thatsuch isanofficialpronouncementmadeby theChurch.Iammerelysayingthat suchabeliefisnotincompatiblewith theteachingoftheChurch;mainlyto disabuseyourmindofyourconception oftheChurchassittingimpotently behindtheBookofGenesisandpeepingtimorouslyatatextbookofBiology. Andinallthisyoufindalsotheanswertoyourqueryastowhymanand noothercreaturehasaspiritualsoul. BecauseitispartofGod'splanof creation?

Itis,true,asanacquaintanceofmine says,thateveryonehasavocation,be ittothebutcher'sshoporthebishopric,andone'svocationalworkcomes nextinimportanceafterone'sown personalsanctification.Andyou,of course,asteachers,standinoneofthe mostimportantofallvocations.Iam awarethatthereisacertainamount oflethargy,whichisgraduallybeing dissipated,inregardtotheworkat CatholicAction.Thechiefreasons areeitherignorance,thatispeopledo notknowwhattodo,orthatcertain inherentlazinesswhichispresentin mostofus.Thesearenotbadexcusingcauses,butwhatisalmostunforgivableistheindifference,thecoldheartednessofmanytothecallof Christamidthespiritualruinofthe worldaboutus.

Oneofthemosttouchingincidents inthelifeofthegreatestofallteachersisthatcontainedearlyinHispubliclifeafteroneofHisfirstrejections. whenSt.Judetellsusthat,"thePhariseesandthelawyersdespisedthecounselofGod."AndOurLordsawat theendofthestreetsomechildren playingagameHeknewverywell.The childrenononesideofthestreet wouldplaynurseryrhymesonimaginaryinstruments,andthechildrenon theothersidewouldtakeuptherefrainandsingordancetoit.tillall grewtired,AndOurLordcompared thosewhorejectedHimtosulkychildrenrefusingtoplay."Whereunto thenshallIlikenthemenofthisgeneration?Andtowhataretheylike? Theyareliketochildrensittinginthe market-place,andspeakingoneto another,andsaying:Wehavepipedto youandyouhavenotdanced.We havemournedandyouhavenot wept."

Thoughyournumbersarenotgreat, thisshouldberemediedafterthewar, andinanycaseitislargelyimmaterial. AlreadyCatholicActionhasmade greatstridesinAustraliawithlimited personnel.andallrevolutions,after all,havebeentheworkofasmall bodyofenthusiasts.

Themajordifficultyisthatyoualreadyhavesomanythingstodofor acomparativelysmallorganisation. 'Thefieldofworkbeforeusinthematterofeducationissobroadastobe almostunlimited.Iknowyourown guildisalreadyactivelyengagedin certainworks,andthereareothers whichyouhavenotyetbeenableto tackle,Youhaveyourownspiritual workwithintheGuild.Suchspiritual associationwasamarkedfeatureof themediaevalguilds,Youare,inaddition,performingvariouscharitable works,suchasvisitationstotheChildren'sHospital.Youhavethetask alsoofinterestingotherCatholic teachersintheGuild.Youhavethe taskofinformingyourselfonthe Christianteachingoneducationand othermodernproblems,foryourown informationandalsotoequipyourself

forthebattle.Youhavethetaskof seeingthatCatholicchildreninyour ownStateschoolsareadequatelyinstructedwhentheycannotgotoCatholicschools.Youhavethetaskof combatingfalsetheoriesofeducation, whenevertheyappear,whetherinyour ownprofessionalorganisationorin theexpressionsofthepublicatlarge. Youhavethetaskofeffectingchanges inthesyllabusoftheschoolsinsecularsubjectswheresuchsubjectsare beingtaughtwithadefiniteantiChristianbias.Anotherbranch-which needswatchingisthatofAdultEducation.Youhavethetaskofwatchingdifferentinfluencesinthelivesof children-thefilms,books,cartoons, andsoon.Andinthelongrunyou havethejobofresistingtoomuchcentralisationofeducation-toomuch Stateinterference-andofendeavouringtoensurethatteachersplayan adequateandeffectiverole,asistheir right,intherunningofyourowndepartment.

Youcannot,therefore,besaidtobe lightlyburdened,hut,ontheother hand.youneednothedismayedatthe magnitudeofthetask.Somethings youmaynevertackle:somemaytake yearstoaccomplish:somereform's maysurpriseyoubytheeasewith whichtheycome.So,thoughyour fieldofworkisbroad,IamnotdiffidentaboutsuggestinganaddiitonaT taskwhichmightindeedserveasyour long-termohejctive.

Discouragementsometimesbesets peopleintheworkofCatholicAction. Therearetimeswhenthewayseems lungandtheheartgrowsweary.There areeventimeswhenwehavetosolace ourselveswiththethoughtthatthough wemaynotreapthe'fruit,other'scertainlyshall.Itisatsuchtimesthat itiswelltoconsiderthefactthatthe workofCatholicActionhasnotbeen entirelyfruitlessoverthelastfew years.ThusCatholicideasontheimportanceofthefamilyasthefundamentalsocialunitarealreadybeing givenfairconsiderationininfluential quarters.Muchcanhedonebystrikingattherightmomentandinthe rightway.

AndIconsiderthatthetimeisripe nowinthismatterofreligiouseducationintheschool.Ithasbecomea topicalsubect-theLondon"Times" hasfeatureditintwoleadingarticles, theAustralianGalluppollshowsoverwhelmingsupportfortheproposal; wefindevenProfessorsofEducation advocatingacourseincomparativereligionattheUniversityandtheTeachers'TrainingCollege,andthereare otherstrawsinthewind,Itmight beahardfight,itmightbeashort fight,but,asleast.inmyopinion,it isafightwellworthwhiletakingon.

Themethodofattackwouldseem tofallintotwosections.Firstly,by takingfulladvantageofpresentfacilitiesforteachingreligion;secondly,by endeavouringtohavethosefacilities extended.Catholicteachersmight wellbeginbymakingregularuseofthe half-hoursetasideforScriptureeach week,and,wherepossible,graduallyinterestingandpersuadingothernonCatholicteacherstodothesame.One ofthemajordrawbacksofthepresent systemisthatinspectorsdonotbother toexamineinthesubject,andthis leadstheteachertoadoptanegligent attitude.Thisisadefectwhichshould beremediedifpossible.

ThenextmajorstepwouldbetoattempttodrawupasyllabusofChristianteachingwhichwouldbeacceptabletotheleadersofthevariousdenominations,andtogetsuchasyllabus coveredaspartofateacher'straining course.

Idothinkthatthereisasufficient minimumofagreementamongnonCatholicsonwhichtobaseafairly broadsyllabus.TheOldTestament isnotmerelygoodliterature:ittells thestoryoftheCreation,theFall,and theTenCommandments.TheNew Testamentisnotmerelyacollection ofparables.Ittellsthestoryofa man'slifelivedandHisteaching.The

journeysoftheApostlesandthestrug glesoftheinfantChurchareincluded inthepresentsyllabus,butthereis alsoawealthofothermaterialonwhich todraw,TherearelivesofChristian Saints,suchasFrancisofAssisior ElizabethofHungarywhichseemto appealtoCatholicandnon-Catholic alike;whileinthehigherclassessome apologeticsandtheChristianteaching oncivicscouldbeintroduced.

However,itisnotmyintentionto discusstheproblemsofanagreed syllabusto-night,butmerelytostate thattherawmaterialisthereandthat itprobablethatmanynon-Catholic leaderswouldwelcomeanyattempt todraftone.Noristheretimetodicusstwoothernotableobjectionsto theteachingofreligionbyGovernmentteachers-firstly,thattheclergymenshouldbecapabeofdoingitthemselves;secondly,thatnon-Christian. teachersshouldnotbeaskedtoperformsuchadisagreeabletask-be'yond savingthattheanswerstobothobjectionsareobvious,andIleavethem toyourselves.

BecauseasIhavejustsaid,ithas beenmyintentionto-nightonlytoindicatethatsomethingislackinginour educationalsystemto-day,andtoleave ittovouasmembersoftheGuild mostvitallyconcernedtodiscusshow changescanbestbebroughtabout,

Certainlytheworldto-daystandsin needofsomesuchwork.Onceagain theCatholiclaity,asitwasoncebefore,isonthemarch.Thegroundworkwaslaidinthelastcentury,and to-daytheworldiswaitingasitwaited2,000yearsago.AndtheHeartof Christawaitingtheconversionofthat worldisassadto-dayasitwaswhen, ontheeveofHisPassion,Hestood onthehilloverlookingthecityand cried,"Jerusalem,Jerusalem,how oftenwouldIhavegatheredthee undermywingasahengatheresther chickensAndthouwould'stnot."

ThefirstperformanceofJ.M.Barrie's "DearBrutus-cannotescapethissort ofcriticism.Inadozenways(withoutmuchexaggeration)theplayersrevealedtheirrawnessandthetechnical stafftheirlimitations,Thelatter trouble,itmustbeadmitted,islargely duetothelackofadequatestagefacilities,andwillnotberemedieduntil theClubspendssomemoneyonitself; buttheplayerswillimprove.Itis, therefore,unfortunate(fortheplayers) thattraditionaswellasexpediency leadscriticstogoalongontheopeningnight.

One'sfirstquarrelmustbewiththe veryhalf-heartedattemptmadeto catchBarrie'sairofmystery.Ifone thingmorethananotherstandsoutas thepredominantfeatureof"DearBrutus"itistheauthor'sdeliberateuseof mysteryinordertothrowacloakof realismoverhispuppets.Forthe thingsthathappenin"DearBrutus" couldonlyhappeninadream-world; andunlesswearesuitablyprepared andtheillusionisstrongenoughto holdus,wecannotbesuddenlytrans: portedfromthemundanesurroundings oftheRepertoryTheatreintoaworld wherefantasyhasactuallybecome real.Leavingasidemoreambitious waysofpreparingthegroundforthe transition,oneobviousmoveinthe rightdirectionwouldhavebeena slow!curtain;butthelightsweredown andthecurtainupbeforepeoplehad properlyrecoveredfromthehorrible messtheorchestramadeoftheNationalAnthem.Actioncametoosoon; insteadofallowingtimeforthemoonlightandshadowstosinkintothe soulsofthesilentonlookers,thussettingthemoodoftheplay,withindecenthastethesetwassuddenlygivenadoseofveryordinaryelectric lightandagroupofordinarywomen maderatheratameentrance.The sadpartofitwasthatatleastsomeof theladieswerequitecapableofdoing allthatthemostmeticulousproducer couldrequireoftheminthewayof lendingverisimilitudetotheunveiling ofthefantastic;theywouldprobably bethefirsttoagreethattheirfirst entrance,soimportant,leftthemfeel. ingasawkwardastheyundoubtedly looked,Ontheopeningnight,at anyrate,thewill-o'-the-wispfancythat SirJamesBarrieintendedshouldpre-

Awelcomeapproximationtosomethinglikethespiritoftheplaywas providedbyJohnBottomley'srepresentationofLob,thePuckofthepiece, andwithcertainreservationstheincarnationofBarrie'sownwhimsicality. Unfortunatelyhiseffort,whichwasin therightvein,placedhimsomuchout ofharmonywiththeprevailingsanity ofeverybodyelse,includingtheaudience,thatparadoxicallyheappearedinsane.Barriecertainlyneverintended thatLobshouldgivethisimpression. ButBarriehadcountedonourbeing hypnotisedbythistime. GlenLilleywasalsointouchwith thatotherworld.HisShakespearian trainingstoodhimingoodsteadfor hisparticipationinthismodernvariant of"AMidsummerNight'sDream." Muchpraisemustgotohimandto Mrs.R.GoyneMillerfortheireffective doubleasMr.andMrs.Coade,These twocapturedthesympathyoftheaudiencefarmorereadilythanHarold Harveywho,asWillDearth,hadthe opportunityofsomebodyelse'slifetime.Mr.HarveyisnomeanacquisitiontotheRepertoryClub,butthe partissimplynothis.Forone thinghisappearanceisagainsthim. Heisfartoomuchofthestrapping younggianttomakeapretenceof beingaseasonedmanwhohasdrunk deepofthecupoflifeandisnow tastingthedregs.Itwouldindeed takeagoodmantofollowinthefootstepsofGeraldduMaurier,whowas theoriginalWillDearthwhen"Dear Brutus"openedatWyndham'sin Londonin1917-andranfor365performancesover55solidweeks.Du Maurier,restlessandrecklessandembitteredbythewar,tookthisroleof thedrink-soddenartistpeculiarlyto himself,andinthesecondactpainted amemorablepictureofwhatWill Dearthmighthavebeen-ifhehad hadasecondchance.FaithCelli,as thedream-daughterMargaret,combinedwithDuMauriertocreateafatherdaughterrelationshipwhichembodied allthatBarriehaddaredtohopefor: ontheinterpretationoftheexquisite

humansentimentinthisstoryofa man'shopelessyearningforadaughter,whomhepossessesbutinadream, dependsthedegreeofappealthat "DearBrutus"willhaveforagenerationthathasceasedtodelightinfairy tales-more'sthepity.

Thentherearesomehumorousremarksaboutsocialism where,oh where,hasourrevolutiongone?)."Socialismcannotbeimposeduponthe peoplebyaminority, Itwillcome intobeingonlywhenamajorityof thepeoplewantit.Socialism,therefore,isthoroughlydemocratic."Oh yeah?Thefactisthatsocialism(to usetheirowneuphemism)wasimposedontheRussianpeopleandismaintainedbythetiniestminority.But thereisevidencethat,inAustralia, afteraprolongedtasteofwar-timecontrols,therewillbeaconsiderablediminutioninsocialisticenthusiasm.The Referendumwasastrikingsymptomof thiscoolingofLeftWingardour.Even theCorns.canseethewritingonthe wall,andhencethemealy-mouthedlip servicetodemocracyasthewillof themajority,soablyexposedby"The Worker."

TherealCommunistcontemptfor this"primitive"democraticconceptis atoncemadeevidentbyapleafor "supportforthegrantingofwider powersfortheFederalGovernment." Ifthewillofthemajorityhadbeen madeunmistakablyclearonanyissue inAustralianhistoryitwasintherecentReferendum,andanybodywho caredaboutthatnationaldecision mightbeexpectedtoliedoggofor 'omeYearsatleast.

Butthemasterstrokeisgivenunder "CivilRights,"forheretheCommunistsurge"preservationoftherightsof theAustralianpeopletofreedomof religion"!Iamnowardentlylooking forwardtoaDayofPrayerorganised bytheComrades.Perhapsinthenow yeartherewillbeanenclosedRetreat forPartymembersintheKremlin. whileArmisticeDaymightbesuitably observedbyasolemnTriduum.

Whileconsideringtheobligationsof children,undertheFourthCommandment,wesawthattheywerebound, accordingtotheneed,andasfaraslay intheirpower,tocontributetowards thetemporalsupportoftheirparents. Asimilardutyliesuponthefaithfulof supportingtheirspiritualfathers--the lergy.

Whenthe"ReformedBishops"of QueenElizabeth'smakingcomplained totheLordTreasureroftheirdiminishedrevenues-theeffectofthatsystem ofsacrilegiousspoliationstartedby theirSovereign'srapacioussire-Sir WilliamCecilsanctimouiouslyrebukedtheirlordshipswiththewords: "Spiritualthingsbemeetestforspiritualpersons."Istherenotsomething ofthisspiritobservableattimes amongstCatholics?Donotpeople occasionallycloaktheir'wantofgenerosityingivingunderadisingenuous zealforclericalunworldliness?They wouldnot,forsooth,bepartiestocontaminatingthepriesthoodbyencouringanxietyfor£s.d.,norexposeit tounhallowedcontactwithfilthylucre.

Undoubtedly,excessiveattachment tothethingsofearthisreprehensible inallpersons-afault,bytheway, whichgivesrisetoniggardlinessingiving,Itisstillmoreblameworthyin thoseconsecratedtoGodandtothe careofsouls.Stillworseisitforthe shepherdstotendthesheepmerelyfor thesakeoftheirfleece,andneglect thosethatarealreadycloseshornand cansparenone.Allthesame,theshepherdshavearighttotemporalsupport andtheflockundertheirstaffaduty toprovidethesame.

Now,whatistheprincipleupon whichthisdutyrests?Certainlynot thatspiritualthingsmustbebought withmoney,forthiswouldconstitute thehatefulcrimeofsimony.The holythingsofGod-theforgivenessof sinsinConfession,theapplicationof OurLord'smeritstothesoulinthe SacramentsandbymeansoftheHoly Sacrifice,andothermeansofgracearenottobepurchasedwithgoldand silver.Yet,werethispossible,the Irishman'sevasivebutwittyretortto aProtestantcavilleratpriest'sfees wouldholdgood:"Sure,an'isn'titdirt cheapattheprice?"Suchpayment, however,isimpossible.Therecanbe noproportionandnocomparisonbetweenaspiritualgiftandtemporalremuneration.Thus,theveryessence ofapurchaseisabsent.

What,then,isthegrounduponwhich spiritualpastorsrightlyclaimterm poralmaintenance?Onnolesssolid aonethanOurLord'sownteaching. "Intowhatsoeverhouseyeenter,first say:Peacetothishouse, And inthesamehouseremaineatingand drinkingsuchthingsastheyhave:for thelabourerisworthyofhishire."

Theunderlyingprincipleisclear enough.Thosewhodevotetheirtime, strength,andverylives,tothecareof soulsaretherebynecessarilyhindered fromworkingouttheirownlivelihood inotherways.Evenhadtheytime andopportunityformakingaliving,a strictlawoftheChurchblocksthe way,forbiddingthemtoengagein strictlymercantiletraffic-inbuying andselling,andsuch-like.What,then, canbemorejustthanthatthosewho benefitbytheirministrationsshould seetheydonotlackthemeansofliving?

Thosewhoenjoyacomfortableshare ofthisworld'sgoodsaremorebound toassisttheclergythanaretheir poorerbrethren.Yet,strangetosay, itisafactofexperiencethatthewellto-doareoftenfarlessopen-handed towardstheChurch,inproportionto theirmeans,thanthepoor.While somerichpersonwillneverdreamof reservingforreligiouspurposesany portionofthesparecashhethrows awayuponuselessextravaganceora passingfancy,poorbutgenerouspeoplewillpainfullyscrapetogetherafew shillingstofurtheraspiritualorcharitableobject.Therichseemattimes toforgetthatwealthisagiftrather thanameritandprivilege-thatthey arethestewards,andnottheirresponsiblemasters,ofthegoodthingswith whichGodhasblessedthemabove theirfellows,Thus,itmayhappen thatwealthyandfashionablepeople treattheclaim'softheChurchona levelwiththoseoftheirconfiding tailorsanddressmakers-thatis,as havingthelastclaimontheirconsideration,andletthemwait.

Beyondthegeneralquestionofsupportfortheclergy,thereareoneor twodevelopmentsoftheprinciplejust laiddownthatdeserveapassingword ofexplanation.

Letustakefirstthepracticeofgivingfeesorstipendsforcertainpriestly functions.Whatexactlyistheirmeaning?Forexample,Iwantapriestto offerNfassformyintention,andIam expected,asamatterofcourse,to maketheusualpecuniaryoffering?Is notthislikepayingforaspiritual thing?No!Youdonot,youcould not,paywithearthlydrossforwhat isinitselfofDivineandinfinitevalue -theSacrificeoftheBodyandBlood ofGod'sownSon.Youcompensate theministerofChristforhistimeand labour;youhelptokeephiminhealth andstrength,thathemayoftenrepeat thisoneandonlyadequateactofDivineworshiponyourbehalf,Itistrue that,onceyouhavepresentedyouroffering,thepriestisboundinjusticeto saytheMassaccordingtoyourintention.Butthisisnobusinessbargain, nocommercialcontract,bywhicha Massisgiveninexchangeforyourgift ofhalfacrownorfiveshillings,or whatevermaybetheamountofthe stipendasfixed-notbythepriest,but byhisBishop.Itisfortheservices oftheministerthatyoupay,notfor thespiritualgiftsecured,

Aiterall,menrecognisethisdistinctionintheirdealings'withotherprofessionalmen-solicitors,barristers, anddoctors.Adoctorsavesyourlife byatimelyvisitandhappily-chosen remedy.Therecanbenocomparisonbetweentheguineaortwothat youpayhimandtheboonoflifehe hasbeeninstrumentalinpreservingto you.Buthisservicescallforareward.Hismedicaleducationhas beencostlyandlaborious;itwaslong beforehecouldturnhistrainingtoaccount.Though,unlikethepriest,he isfreet,itrarleifhewill,andsoadd tohisstore,yetthenatureofhiseducationandattentiontohisprofessional dutiescuthimofffrommanyopportunitiesofgainwhichareopento others.

Then,again,takethecaseofadispensationoraspiritualgrantofany sortobtainedfromecclesiasticalauthority.Certainpaymentsaresometimesnecessary.Isthemoneypaid ;isthepriceofthespiritualfavour? Notatall,Butitisobviousthatofficialsemployedinecclesiasticalcourts -notlessthanthoseattachedtocivil ones-mustlive,andrequiresalaries. Theirserviceinyourinterestcallsfor recognition.

Of"givingtothepoor"theScripture saysthatitisthesameas"lendingto theLord,"implyingthattheboundless generosityofGodwillrepaywith usury.Stillmore,surely,'willOur Lordrewardsoulsconsumed.likeHis own,withzealforHisFather'shouse, andlavishintheirgenerositytowards thosewhoministertothemwithinit. Therewardmaynotalwaysheinkind.

Indeed,onemaymeetcasesofshatteredfortuneswhereoncetherewas muchgenerositytowardstheChurch. OurLordmayprefertorewardsuch giversinthatcoinwhichthedeadmay carrywiththem,andwhichalonenas currencyinHisHeavenlyKingdomthatis,inspiritualgraces-thesole legaltenderforthepurchaseofheavenlyglory.Hethusrewardstwiceover -withthespiritualblessingsattached toChrist-likepovertyandhumiliation, besidesafullershareintheeternaljoys ofHisKingdom.

ThelateMr.O'Dwyerwasbornin llendigo,Victoria.andcametothis Stateintheyear1903,andduringthe sameyearwasappointedcomputing draftsmanintheLandsandSurveys Department.In1910hewasappointeddraftsmaninchargeoftheBridge. townDistrictOffice,andcontinuedin thatcapacityuntil1926,whenhewas transferredtoheadoffice,Perth.asan examiningdraftsman,Itwasduring 1914thathemarriedMissIsabelPriest, fromAdelaide,S.A.,atSt.Mary'sCathedral,Perth.

HisearlylifeinthisStatewas noticeableforhismanyassociationsin theCatholiccommunity.Amongthese hewassecretaryoftheC.Y.M.S,and amemberoftheCathedralChoir,positionswhichheheldforeightyears.He waslateronamemberoftheHoly NameSociety,ofwhichhewasacon'.,istentfigurefromitsbeginningin thisState,

SoonafterhisarrivalinBridgetown hewasrequestedtoformachoirby thelateFatherReidy.Thistask provedaverydifficultone,owingto theveryfewCatholicslivingthere. Lateronastheparishreceivedmore parishioners,theplansweremadefor theenlargementofthechurchbuildings,inwhichMr.O'Dwyerwaschief instigator.andafteragreatamountof workthebuildingswerefinallycompleted.

Hespent15yearsinBridgetown.and afterhisbeingrecalledtoPerthlived intheHighgateHillparish,wherehe waschoirconductorforapproximately 13years.

Mr.O'Dwyer,whoseparentscame fromTipperary,wasoneoftenchildren,andspentmuchofhisboyhood daystravellingwithandhelpingand servingMassforthemanypriestswho residedintheirhomefromtimeto time,gavehimgreatopportunitiesto helpthem,andheoftenremarkedthat itwasapriviegeandapleasure.He alsovoicedtheopinionthatheserved MassformoreBishopsthananyone maninAustralia.

Twoofhissixsistersbecamenuns, oneoftheBrigidineOrderandthe otheroftheSistersofCharity.

AfterhisretirementfromtheDepartmentofLandsandSurveys,atthe ageof65years,hestillendeavouredto helpthepriestsandnunswhenever possible,andhisdeathprecededbya shortillness,cameasagreatshockto hismanyfriends.

Alargegatheringattendedthefuneral,mainlythosebeingmembersof thevariousCatholicsocieties,including Rev,FathersCrowley,Wallace,andDr. Kiernan.

Thepall-bearerswere:Mr.President Dwyer,Mr.J.Edwards,Mr.G.Cogan, Mr.C.Cogan,Mr.H.Gallagher,Mr.R. Davidson,Mr.Henderson,Mr.Henrich,Mr.J.Walsh,andMr.Courtney.

Themanywreathsandflowerswere gratefullyacknowledged,aswerealso themanytelegrams,letters,etc.,of sympathyandcondolence.

OfficerJohnByrneHorgan,R.A.A.F., whohasbeenpostedmissingforsome time,isnowbelievedtohavelosthis lifeinairoperationsonFebruary13.

SecondsonofMr.andMrs.Gerald Horgan,ofVictoriaPark,deceasedwas educatedatSt.Brigid'sConvent,West Perth,wherehisauntSisterMary Laurence)isamemberoftheCommunity.In1940heenlistedinthe R.A.A.F.,andaftertrainingfor12 monthsinthisState,completedhis courseinCanada,theMiddleEast,and England.Atthetimeofhisdeathhe waspilotofaHalifaxaircraft.

Fourmembersofhiscrewareprisonersofwar,andthefollowingnarrativeofWarrant-OfficerHorgan'smagnificentcouragewaswrittentothe BritishRedCrossSocietybyoneof them,LieutenantL.J.Lindridge:-

"Onthenightofthe15th.February, 1914.whilstdyingoverenemyterritory,wewereattackedandforcedto abandonaircraft.ThePilot(W/OJ. B.Horgan)gavetheorder,'Prepareto abandon,'whichwasacknowledgedby allthecrewexceptthemiduppergunner(Sgt.E.BBlair).Theaircraft wasinaspiraldive,losingheightrapidly,andaftertryingtoregaincontrol, thePilotgavetheorder'Abandonaircraft.'Thereargunner(Sgt.W.Leiper)wasthefirsttoacknowledgethis andleftimmediately.ThePilotthen toldustogetoutquickly,astheaircraftwasliabletospinatanyminute. Thenavigator,bombsinner(1170J.K. Kerr)andwirelessoperator(Sgt.F, Heyman)thenleftbythefrontescapehatch.

"AtDalagLuftWeweretoldthatan aircrafthadbeenfoundneartheplace wherewewerecaptured,andthere werethreedeadbodiesinit.Ithink theymaybethePilot.MidUpperGunnerandFlightEngineer(Sgt.Piper). Thewirelessoperatorsaidthatwhenhe passedthePilotwasatthecontrols strugglingtopreventtheaircraftspinning,andthattheflightengineerhad gonetotherearescapehatch.I wouldliketopointoutthatitwasdue tothemagnificenteffortofthePilot thatanyofthecrewweresaved.Had herelaxedhiseffortstoputonhisown parachutetheaircraftwouldhave spunin."
