DevotiontotheBlessedEucharist

OneofthemoststrikingfeaturesofCatholicismto-dayisthe increaseddevotionofCatholicstotheBlesedSacrament.Twogreat movementswithinthelastcenturywerechieflyresponsibleforthis. OnewastheinaugurationoftheEucharisticCongressesbythe FrenchMaidofTours,MarieTamisier,whichhaveincreasedto tremendousproportionssincethefirstpilgrimagetoAvignonin 1873.Bythismeans,Catholicshavebeenemboldenedtopaypublic homagetotheBlessedSacrament,andtheseCongresseshaveassistedinawonderfulmannerindeepeningthefaithofthemasses. TheothermovementcamefromtheFatherofChristendomhimself -thesaintlyPopePiusX.Thisyear,Catholicsthroughoutthe universalChurch.andthechildrenparticularlycelebratethe35th. anniversaryofthedecree"Qum_Singulari,"whichencouragedfrequentanddailyreceptionofHolyCommunionandadmittedchildrenoftenderagetotheEucharisticBanquet.Oneofthemost popularformsofEucharisticdevotionisthatoftheQuarantOre, orFortyHours'ExpositionoftheBlessedSacrament.Asolemn "MassofExposition"marksthecommencementofthisdevotion, andattheendofthefortyhoursanother"MassofDeposition"is celebrated.BoththeseMassesareusuallyaccompaniedbyaprocessionoftheBlessedSacramentandthechantingoftheLitanies oftheSaints.

ThedevotionoftheFortyHours,thoughitspreciseoriginis uncertain,beganinMilanintheyear1537,andwithintwoyears wasendowedwithaPapalindulgencebyPopePaulIII.This practiceofcontinuousprayerandadorationbeforetheBlessed Sacramentexposed,spreadrapidlyandwasgreatlyencouragedby St.PhilipTeriandSt.IgnatiusLoyola.UnderthespecialdirectionoftheOratorianFathers,andparticularlyoftheirsaintly Bishop,JuvenalAncina,thedevotionincreasedandbegantoassumethatelaborateritualwhichsignalisesitssolemnityto-day.It isinterestingtonote,too,thatthisdevotionappearstohavebeen theinspirationofthosesacredconcerts,thememoryofwhichis perpetuatedinthe"Oratorios"ofourgreatestcomposers.The keynoteoftheapprobationwhichthedevotionreceivedfrom variousPopesisthatofanxietyforthepeaceofChristendom. Hence,evento-day,ontheseconddayoftheExposition.theMass "ProPace"istohesung.accordingtotheRubrics.Ofold,the Popesmetthediscordsoftheirtimewith"thepracticeofunwearied prayer."To-daytheChurchisfacedwithdangersnotlessdeadly thanthemenaceof,theTurkinthedaysofPopePaulIII.The traditionofpeacehascomedowntothepresentPopeandthemeans ofpreservingitremainsthesame,aswitnesstherepeatedappeals oftheHolyFather.
