DominicMichaelBodkinwasbornon July21,1843,atTullinadaly,three milesfromTuam.Dominic'sparents werestaunchCatholicsandbroughtup theirlargefamilyofthirteeninaneminentlyChristianway.Itwasagreat consolationtothemtonotethepiety anddevotionoftheirlittleDominic, anditcausedthemnosurprisewhen,at theageofthirteen,Dominicaskedto beallowedtoofferhislifetoGodasa ChristianBrother.'Heenteredthe NovitiateinRichmond-street,Dublin, i'nJuly12,1858.Hedrankdeepof thefountainsoftruedevotionandleft theNovitiatefilledwiththeonedesiretoserveGodandtoserveHim wholeheartedly.Hepronouncedhis PerpetualVowsin1864,andin1868 joinedBrotherAmbroseTreacy,BrotherBarnabasLynch,andBrotherJosephNolanintheworkoffoundingthe CongregationinAustralia.

EveryChristianhasbeencalledbyGod toagreatdignity.Hehasreceived existencefromGod,andanintellect andwillwhichenablehimtobeunited withGodinknowledgeandlove. Throughbaptismhehasbeenraisedto asupernaturalstate,whichmeansthat inamysteriouswayhebecomesa sharerinthedivinenature,andisentitledtoseeGodasHereallyisandrejoicewithoutmeasureandwithoutend inseeingHimandlovingHim.But tobeapriestistoenjoyaspecialkind ofunionwithJesusChrist,beyond whatbaptismandconfirmationconfer ontheordinaryChristian.Thepriest isapriestpreciselybecausehehas beenmadetherepresentativeofJesus Christ,havingbeenappointedbyGod toofferupthesamesacrificeasthe Redeemeroftheworld,andtoforgivesin,asJesusChristforgavesin. Apriestisidentifiedinaspecialway, thereforewithChrist,theSonofGod, becausehespeaksinHisNameand actswithHispower.Thisisadignity whichisbeyondourcomprehension.
Thelifeofapriestisdevotedtothe workwhichbroughtGodfromheaven toearth,whathasbeencalled"the mostdivineofalldivineemployments, thesalvationofsouls.'Itishisduty totakeChrist'splaceinteachingmen thetruthswhichGodhasrevealed,in savingthemfromsinandevil,and bringingtothemthesupernatural helpsandgraceswhichtheyneedin ordertoreacheternallife.Thereis, ofcourse,noworkonearthwhichcould comparewiththisforitsworthinthe' eyesofGod,andforitsbenefittomen.
ItisnaturalforaCatholicboywho hasstrongfaithtoturnhisthoughts towardsthepriesthood.Hehashis lifebeforehim;howishegoingtouse it?Hethinksthathemightstandat thealtarandliftupthedivineVictim whomhiswordshavemadepresent there.Hemightsaytosin-ladensouls, "Iabsolveyoufromyoursins."He mightbaptisechildren,someof.them togostraighttoheaven,andsometo liveanddogreatthingsinGod'sservice.HemightdistributetheBread ofLifetocountlesshungeringsouls, bringingthemthestrengthtoliveholy livesandfightthebattleoflifebravely.Hemightanointthedying,giving themthegracetodiehappydeaths andbewellpreparedtomeettheeternalJudge.Hemightbringtothesorrowfultheconsolationthatonlyreligioncangive,guidetheinnocent throughthesnaressetbytheevilone, helptheguiltytoescapefromtheentanglementsofsin,andteachmanythe onlylessonreallyworthlearning,to knowandloveJesusChrist.

byitselfitisnotsufficient,neitheris itnecessary.Nordoesavocationmean thataboywillfindhimselfinaSeminarywithoutanyco-operationonhis part.Godworksthroughourmind andwill;Hegivesusamindtothink with,andawilltochoosewith,and thenassistsuswithHisgrace,which enlightensandmovesus.What,then, isavocation?IfIlevanttoknowif aboyhasavocationtothepriesthood, thesearethequestionsImustask. First,doesheknowwhatthepriesthoodis-thedignityofthepriesthood, theworkapriesthastodo,thedifficultvirtueshemustpractise,thesacrificeshemustmake.Secondly,what arethemotiveswhichmaketheboy thinkofbeingapriest?Themotives mustbegoodones;thatis,theymust besupernatural,as,forexample,tobe likeOurLord,toworkforHim,to savesouls.Thirdly,hasthecandidate thequalitiesthatarenecessary?Is hishealthgoodenough?Hashegot sufficientbrainstogothroughtherequisitecourseofstudies?Hashea steadycharacter,powerofself-control, asupernaturalspirit,unworldliness, readinesstoobey-inshort,suchqualitiesaswillmakehimsuited,withtraining,forthelifeofapriest.Hemust alsobefreefromotherobligations,such asthatofsupportingparents,orbrotherandsisters,towhomhishelp maybenecessary.Butiftheforegoingquestionscanbesatisfactorily answered,aboyhasavocation.The onlythingtobesettlediswhetherhe hassufficientloveofOurLordandenthusiasmforHiscausetomakethe sacrificesinvolvedandovercomewhateverdifficultiesmaypresentthemselves.
Itisworthcitingoncemoreareport onthismatterissuedwiththefullapprovaloftheHolySeeintheyear1912.. Thereportdeclares"thatthedispositionrequiredintheonetobeordained, or,asitisusuallycalled,avocationto thepriesthood,doesnotbyanymeans consist,necessarily,orevenordinarily, inanykindofinteriordesireorinvitationfromtheHolyGhosttoreceive thepriesthood;but,onthecontrary, thatintheonetobeordainednothing moreisrequiredthanarightintention, combinedwithfitness.Fitnessconsistsinsuchgiftsofgraceandnature, suchholinessoflifeandsufficiencyof knowledge,asmaygiveafirmfoundationforhopethathemaybeablefittinglytocarryoutthedutiesofthe priesthoodandobservefaithfullyits obligations."("ActaApostolicaeSedis," July,1912.)
Thevocationofapriestisamost highandholyone,suchasshouldinspireaCatholicboywho.wishestode. votehislifetosomethingthatisreally worthyofhisambitions.Thelifeof apriestpresentsopportunitiesforclose intimacywithJesusChrist,andof grandworkforHiscause.Apriest candomoreforthegoodandhappiness ofmankindthanapersoninanyother walkoflife.Andwhateternitywill beforafaithfulpriestwecannot..hope tograspinthisworld.TheChurch needsanarmyofholypriests.May therebemanyCatholicboyswhowill beinspiredtohearthecall!
Parentscanhelpbytheirprayers,by theirgoodexample,andbyseeingthat theirhomesandtheirlivesareruledby thefaithwhichGodhasgiventhem. Hereisanexampleofhowparentscan influencetheirchildrenforgoodwithoutknowingit,takenfromsomerecollectionsofanEnglishJesuit,written byhis*other:-"Whenhiseducation wasfinished,hismotherobtainedfor himaverygoodappointmentinthe civilservice.Whenallwassettled,he startledhisparentsbyannouncinghis intentionofbecomingaJesuit.Very naturally,theyaskedhimwhathad givenhimtheidea.Hisreplywasto fetchallhismother'sletters,andto castthemintoherlap.Shetoldhim thatshehadneverbeensoastonished, andsaidso.'Youalwaystoldmeto thinkofGodfirst,'wasthereply,'and ofthenextworld,notofthis.'"

TheplansforthenewOrphanageat ClontarfweredrawnupbyCavanagh andCavanagh,Architects,tothedirectionofBrotherL.Ryan'andBrother D.F.Bodkin.Despitedifficultiesof transport,thematerialswerecollected andthemainbuildingwaserected.The finestructurewasincompleteusein 1902,andbecamethehomeofagreat numberoflittleWestAustralianswho, bythedeathofeitherfatherormother orboth,wereleftwithoutahomeand werethrownonthecharityoftheir fellowcitizens.
FromtheverybeginningClontarf attractedthenoticeofthepeopleof Perth.Thehappy,cheerfulappearanceoftheboys,theusefulactivities theywereengagedin,thepoptlarityof theOrphanageBrassBand,allcombinedtofocusattentiononthisgreatinstitutionofcharityandsocialuplift.
Theyearsmarchedon,andthedirectionofClontarfpassedthroughthe handsofBrotherL.Ryan,BrotherD. F.Bodkin,BrotherJ.O'Connor,BrotherA.O'Brien,BrotherM.A.Geoghegan,Brother.M.F.Redmond,Brother F.P.Keaney,andBrotherD.M.Daly, allofwhomcontributedtothegeneral welfareoftheboys.Inthetimeof BrotherGeoghegan'sadministration ArtandManualRoomswereaddedto theschoolrooms,andalargerecreation hallwasbuilt.Theoft-repeatedoppealforroadfacilitiesforClontarfwas accededtoandafineroadwasbuilt.
BrotherD.M.Dalywasacapableadministrator,andunderhissupervision much.internalimprovementwasmade andimprovedmethodsadoptedinthe farmmanagement.
ItwasreservedtoBrotherF.P. KeaneywhowasappointedforasecondtimetothechargeofClontarf,to makethefameofthisgreathomering throughtheland.SoonafterhisreappointmentBrotherKeaneybegana buildingscheme.Wellappointedmodernschoolrooms,repletewitheveryrequirement,werebuiltbytheboys themselves,thenfollowedahandball court,largerandmorecommodious manualandtraderooms,akitchen block,anewlavatoryblock,andlastof all,amagnificentchapel.
Thischapel.isagemofRomanesque architecture,andwasdesignedbyMiss MarieJackson,andbuiltentirelyby theboysofClontarf.Thededication ofthechapeltoSt.JohnBosco,the patronoforphanboys,wasapt.
Butthewarwasnowtointervene, andPerthcitizensheardwithsorrow thattheClontarfbuildingswereneeded asatrainingschoolforyoungairmen. ClontarfevacuatedtoTardun.
Mayweallhopeforaspeedyreturn ofClontarftoitsrealwork-ahomefor theorphanandnecessitousboyofthe greatPerth,Archdiocese.
CASTLEDAREJUNIORORPHANAGE.
In1929HisGraceArchbishopClune approvedoftheopeningofaJunior OrphanageatCastledare.Thisinstitutionwastotaketheplace,ofthe HomeforSub-NormalBoysopened sometimepreviouslybyHisGrace.It wasfoundaftersomeyears'experienee thatthefewsub-normalboyspresent. ingthemselvescouldbecateredforin otherinstitutions.Thebuildingsat Castledarewereeminentlysuitedfor theirpurposeasaJuniorOrphanage. Thepropertyoccupiessomesixtyacres ontheCanningRiver,andwasacquiredfromtheMcLeodfamily.Thespacioushomewasadmirableforanadministrativeblockandcontainsthe chapel(anartisticallydecoratedand spaciousroom),akitchenrepletewith allmodernconveniences,adining roomfittedupspeciallyfortheneedsof smallboys,libraryandoffices.Mod-. erndormitoriesprovidingindoorand outdoorsleepingfacilities,occupyseparateblocks.Thesedormitorieswere
speciallydesignedbytheVeryRev.Dr. McMahon,andarecompletewiththe mostup-todatebathroomandlavatory conveniences.Eachdormitoryblock hasitsowninfirmaryandthegreatest possiblecomfortisassured.Class roomsandarecreationhallaredetachedbuildingsandfitinharmoniously withacompletebuildingscheme.
Castledarehasitsownfarm,andit isextraordinarytonotetheinterestof theyoungboysinthisusefulbranch oftheInstitution'life.
Therearenowsomeninetyboysat Castledare,andIamsureitmustgive greatsatisfactiontoHisGracethe Archbishop,MostRev.Dr.Prendiville, thepatronofChristianBrothers'InstitutionsinWA.,tonotetheexcellent conditionoftheboysinthis,theJuvenileBoys'HomeoftheArchdiocese.
BINDOON.
Thefreeholdpropertykno,wnasMt. Pleasant,Bindoon,washandedover totheChristianBrothersbyMrs.C. Musk,onAugust11,1936.Thepropertyconsistsofapproximately17,000 acres,comprising3,000acresofagriculturallandclearedforcultivation,2,000 acresofpastorallandclearedforgrazing,and12,000acresoftimberedscrub andbushland.Thereisagoodwater supplyfromtwopermanentrunning springs,severalwells,apermanent creekandmanysoaks.Theproperty ishilly,undulatingtoflat,evidentlya pickedpropertyintheearlydays.It comprisesalargeproportionofstrong claycountry,wellgrassed,approximately6,000acresredloamtolightsoils. Thelandisspeciallysuitedforcitrus growingandvineproduction. In1941itwasdecidedbytheProvincialgovernmenttomakeuseof thepropertyasahomefordelinquents. OnOctober3ofthatyeartheInstitutionwasdeclaredbytheStateGovernmentasubsidisedInstitutionforthe receptionofwardsoftheChildWelfare Department.Paymentfordelinquents tobeattherateof£1aweekupto10 boys;paymentof15s.aweekperhead foranyoverthenumberof10.The periodtheboyswouldremainatthe Institutionwouldbesubjecttoaquarterlyreviewregardingplacementof boysinemployment.
TheLotteriesCommissiondonated £2,500towardstheerectionofasuitablebuildingtoaccommodatetheboys. TheCommissionlaterondevoteda further£1,000tothebuildingfund, andagreedtopaythewagesbillupto £500ontheconstructionofadamto secureamplewatersupplyfortheInstitution.
Theopeningandblessingofthefirst maincompletedbuildingbytheLord AbbotofNewNorcia,onOctober17, 1943,wasasignalsuccess.ImmediatelyfollowingthisceremonytheMinisterforIndustrialDevelopment,LabourandChildWelfare(TheHon.A.R. C.'Hawke,M.L.A.),laidthefoundation stoneof-anewbuildingtocomprise mainlyadiningroomandkitchen block.Thefoundationofthecentral building-theadministrationblockhavebeenlaid,andthebuildingisalso incoureoferection.Allthebuilding operationshavebeencarriedoutby (ContinuedonPage11.)

Afteranillnessofnearlythree monthsinSt.JohnofGodHospital, Subiaco,Mr.TerryStone,ofGordonstreet,WestPerth,hadaverypeaceful deathonTuesday,July18.
BornatGeraldton56yearsago,he wenttoschooltothePresentationSisters,andtheirhelpTerryneverforgot.LeavingschoolhewenttoMeekatharratowork,anditwastherehe metthewifewhowastoprovesucha taithfulcompanionandhelpmatefor therestofhislife.
Troublewithhissightcausedhim latertoleavetheMurchison,firstfor Perth,andlateronfortheSouthWest.Herehestartedworkon'the timbermills,spendingthreeyearsat Morningtonandthen16yearsatDeanmill,justoutsideManjimup.Noone helpedmorewholeheartedlyforallof thoseyearsineverythingthatconcernedtheConventandtheChurchthere thanheandMrs.Stone,andthelate Mrs.PercyAndrews,whodiedjusta fewdaysbeforeTerryhimself.
In1938hisonlydaughter,Mary,becamesuddenlyseriouslyillinPerth, andwithouthesitationthemotherand fatherbrokeuptheirhometobewith herduringthemonthsofherlongillness.Herdeath,onMarch5,1939,at theageof21,wasaverybigparting fortheparentsandforherbrother, Martin.Fromthentillhebecameill lastMay,TerryworkedfortheTramwayDepartmentinPerth.
Themanyvisitsandenquiriesatthe hospitalandthelargeattendanceof relativesandfriendsatthegraveside atKarrakattashowedthat,ifoneof oneofthemostunassumingofmen,his kindnessandthoughtfulnessforothers hadmeantfarmorethanhehimself everrealisedandwill,Ifeelsure,earn forhimmanyaprayerfromthose amongwhomheworkedandlived.
