WhyCatholicsbelieveOurLady wasAssumedBodyandSoul intoHeaven
TheologicalEvidencefor
UniversalDoctrine
Mary'senormousdignity&howGodcrownedit
BytheAssumptionisunderstood thepassingofOurLady,bothbody andsoul,intoheaven.Itisnotan articleoffaith,butitissouniversally acceptedbytheChristianChurchthat itcannotbedeniedwithoutrashness. Thereisindeedreasontobelievethat iftheVaticanCouncilhadcontinued its'sittingsitwouldhave:definedthe doctrine.Muchevidencewascollecttedforthispurpose,bothhistorical andtheological.ItmustbeadmittedatoncethatthehistoricalevidencefortheAssumptionisalmost worthless.Theproofismainlytheological.
ThebeliefinMary'sAssumptionhas beensouniversalandintensethatthe suggestionhasbeenmadethatshe neverdied.Itwasarguedthatsince deathwasthepunishmentofsin, thereforeMarydidnotdie.This supposition,however,mustbereject. ed.Mary'sprivilegesdependupon herDivineMotherhood.HerSon suffereddeathforoursins.Mary mustnotbesupposedtohaveprivilegesaboveherSon.Theremustbe nodoubtaboutherhumannature,so thatthereshallbenodoubtabouther Son'shumannature.
Itwas,therefore,mostfittingthat Maryshouldundergodeath.She diedbecauseJesusdied.Hersinlessness,however,athoughnotasufficient reasonforexemptionfromdeath,was asufficientreasonforexemptionfrom deathby'disease,orfromcorruption afterdeath.SincetheMiddleAges piousbeliefhasascribedherdeathto love.TheardentdesiretobedissolvedandtobewithChristwouldbea prayertoGodtoreleasehersoulfrom thebondageoftheflesh.Hervirginal integrityduringlifewasareasonwhy herbodyshouldremainincorruptin death,andshouldbehonouredwitha speedyresurrection.This,atleast,is anopinionoftheFathers.Shewho hadbeenconceivedwithoutsin,who hadborneherGod,whothroughlife hadbeenfreefromtheslightesttaint ofconcupiscence,whohadbeencloselyassociatedwithChristintheconflictwithsin,wasmostappropriately honouredwiththistriumphoversinacompleteresurrectionandglorificationofherbodyandhersoul.
ThesetheologicalconsiderationsunderliethatdevelopinentofCatholic devotionwhichissignalisedbythe FeastoftheAssumption.alefeast wascelebratedalloverbothEastand Westasearlyasthesixthcentury. Nooneknows,however,whyitcame tobecelebratedonAugust15.Itis alsospokenofastheSleeping,the Pause,theDeparture,theRemoval, theTransit,andtheReception.None ofthesetitlesgiveanyindicationof thespecialassumptionofMary'sbody, butneitherdotheyexcludeit.Itis significant,too,thattheEarlyChurch, whilemostassiduousincollecting relicsofthesaints,possessednoneof OurLady.
Animplicationofthemysteryof theAssumptionistheCrowningof OurLadyinheaven.BytheCrowningwemeanthatshereceivedthatexceedinglyhighdegreeofglorywhich correspondedtoherhighdegreeof gracewhenonearth.Crowningisa universalandeffectivesymbolofthe lastadornmentandfinishofanygood work.ItwasfittingthenthatGod, WhohadfrometernitychosenMary'to beHisMother,andhadpreparedher expresslyforthatofficewithanim-

Perhapsthefirstdevotionalvalueof theAssumptionistorevealtousthe theintegrityoftheflesh.Itisoneof thelawsofthespirit-lifethatifthe souliskeptfreefromsintheeffectsof gracearefeltinthebody.Thewill whichisenlightenedbyrevelationand energisedbygraceisstrongforthe observanceofthelawsofnature.The physicallawsofnaturearejustas muchreflectionsoftheDivineMind asthemorallawsofnature.Ifthey aredisobeyedapunishmentuponthe physicalorganismfollows.Thus thereisaninnerorganicconnection betweenthespirituallifeandthelife ofthebody.Theeffectofsinisseen indisease,deathandbodilycorruption.Theeffectofvirtueisseenin bodilyresurrection,andbodilyglorification.
Mary,beingeverfreefromsin,was everfreefromdiseaseandbodilycorruption.Shediedonlyinorderto belikeJesus,butalso,likeJesus,her fleshdidnotseecorruption.The soulthathadknownnosindrewthe bodyafterit,sothatbothmight sharethelifeofglorification.

IfSt.Paulwasnotfreefromthis law,neithercanweexpecttobe exemptfromit.Wecan,however, turntotheMysteryofOurLady'sAssumption,andlearnthat,ifwecannot haveherfullglory,wemayatleast haveashareinit.Thatsharewill beproportionedtoourpositivevirtues,theactive,energeticstruggleof thespiritagainsttheflesh.
