WhenJohnRice,theyoungestmemberofEdmund'sfamily,returnedto IrelandanAugustinianpriestandbegantoministertotheneedsof tholicsofhislovedCallan,Edmund wasdelightedwithhisworkandspoke tohisbrotherofhisowndesiretoconsecratehislifetoGodintheReligious state.Hegotnoencouragementfrom hisbrother,whobelievedthatbewas fulfillingaChristlikemissioninhis lifeasalayman.Callanbenefitedfrom thecharityofEdmundRiceandsoon thelittlethatchedchapeloftheAugustinianswasreplacedbyanimposing Gothicchapel-amonumenttothe gooddeedsoftheRicefamily.

ButEdmundwasnotsatisfied.He hadoftenbeenencouragedtofosterhis ideaofconsecratinghislifetoGodby FatherJohnPower,theparishpriest ofSt.John's,Waterford.Ithappened thatononeofhisvisitstoFather Power,hebecameacquaintedwith latherPower'ssister-aladyofextraordinaryendowments.Hementioned toherthathewasgoingtosettleup hisbusinessandretiretdsomeContinentalmonastery,probablyinRome. Atthistime,duetothePenalLaws, therewerenomonasteriesinIreland. Tohisgreatsurprisesheatoncedisapprovedofhisleavingthecountry: "Howcanyouthink"ofsuchathing!" shesaid."Whyshouldyoutravel overlandandseatoburyyourselfin somefar-awaymonasterywhilethe sonsofyourpoorcountrymenathome areleftignorantoftherudimentsof divineorhumanknowledgeandallowedtorunwildthroughthestreetswithoutschoolorteacher?"Justasshe spokeasceneinthestreetoutside drovetheargumenthome.Therewas agroupofrough,neglectedboys,unaccustomedtoanyrestraint,pugnaciousinmanner,andvolubleincoarse languageandprofanity."Whynot helptowardstheupl,ftingofthese lads?"shewenton."Lookatthem! Listentothem!Whynotdevoteyourselftotheirinstruction,particularly inReligion?Wouldthatnotbebet-

terthancloisteringyourselfinaforeign conventwhereyoumighthaveno scopeforactivebenevolence?"

TheideahadnotbeennewtoEdmundRice.Oftenonhisroundsof charityhishearthadbeensaddened atthesightoftheignoranceofthe poor.Oftenhehadsaidtohimself: "Cannothingbedoneforthesepoor boys?"Littledidhethinkthenthat anAllWiseProvidencewasdirecting hinttothatgreatApostolate.Now thewordsofapatrioticladyseemed providential,andtheysethissoulon firetoenterontheproject.

Heopenedhismindimmediatelyto theBishopofWaterford,Dr.Thomas Hussey-amanofeminentpartsand respectedbyallwhocameincontact withhim.Hehadtheconfidence evenoftheEnglishGovernment,and hadbeenassigneddiplomaticservice bytheMinistersofGeorgeIII.He hadbeenappointedfirstPresidentof MaynoothEcclesiasticalCollege-a concessiongrantbytheEnglishCabinetasaset-offtotheAmerican, FrenchandIrishrevoltsagainsttyrannyandmisgovernment.FromMaynoothhepassedtoWaterfordwhere, asBishop,hecarriedouthisduties withdignityandwithouttolerating anyGovernmentinterference.

Dr.HusseylistenedtoEdmund Rice'sschemewithinterest.Hecordiallysanctionedtheprojectandsaid itwasheavensent.Afewyearspreviously,Dr.Husseyhadinvitedthe PresentationSisterstoopenaschool forgirls,andnowHeavenhadsent alongEdmundRicewithaproject ofevengreaterurgency-thereclamationandeducationoftheboys.

TheenthusiasmofDr.Husseyand theencouragementofDr.Lanigan,of Ossory,heartenedEdmundRice,and feelingatlastthatGod'sWMwas manifest,hethrewhimselfwholeheartedlyintotheundertaking.His greatconfidenceinGodmadehimrealisethathislackoftrainingasateachercouldeasilyberemedied.Didnot GodHimselfwhenchoosingHisApos-

tlesprovethatHecanmouldthe heartofHiswillingfollowertoanyvocation?

EdmundRicewounduphisbusiness affairsin1802. Hisactioncaused muchsurpriseandspeculationamongst hisbusinessfriends,butknowinghis determinationandlevel-headedness theyfeltthathewasnotactingblindlybutwasfollowingadefinitecallof God.

EdmundRice'sEarlyEffortsinthe Schools.

EdmundRicebeganhisworkof teachinginaverysimpleway.Whilst waitingforthebuildingofasuitable schoolhouseherentedahousein Waterford,andwiththeassistanceof twoyoungmen,whomhehiredforthe purpose,heopenedhisschool.Soon thebuildingwascrowdedwithboys, whohadnottheslightestnotionof theirreligionandwhohadneverlearnt toreadorwrite.Theywererude andundisciplinedandchafedunderrestraint,butEdmundRicewassympatheticandknewhowtomakeallowances.Theseboyswerenotslowto realisethesacrificethatwasmadefor them,andthethoughtoftheadvantagesthatwouldcometothemasaresultoftheirknowledgesoonbrought abouttheirwhole-heartedco-operation. Acompletechangewasnotedintheir lives,muchtothedelightoftheBishopandofthetownsfolk.Edmund Ricewasatruepatriotandhispupils listenedwithraptattentiontohis thrillingstoriesofthegloryofIreland. "WhenMalachyworethecollarof gold, Whichhewonfromaproudinvader." Theseboyshadgrownupinanage ofoppression,anditwasareliefto themtolearnthebrilliantearlyhistoryoftheirownland.Theywere quicktotakeinthestoryofthe JesusChristandwhatHehaddone forthem,andinthegoodnessoftheir heartstheysetthemselvesouttobe goodCatholics.

Thetemporaryschoolhousewasnow fartoosmallforthenumbersthat werethrongingthere,andEdmund Ricebegantolookforasuitablespot tobuildhisschool.Hiaselectionof asecludedpropertyonBallybricken Hill,whereformerlyasmallthatched chapelhadstood,wasapprovedbyDr. Hussey,andthefoundationstoneof thenewschoolwaslaidinJune1,1802. ItwasahappythoughtoftheBishop toselectthenameofMt.Sionforthe newestablishment.Thisnameand thisspotaredeartotheverymany ChristianBrothers-thespiritualsops ofEdmundIgnatiusRice,nowscatteredthroughouttheEnglish-speaking world.

Dr.Husseydidnotlivetoseethe growthofhisfavouredschool.He diedshortlyaftertheopeningcere-

mony.Howinterestedhewasinthe workisevidencedbythebequestof £2,000whichhelefttobeinvestedfor thesupportoftheestablishment.He wassucceededbyDr,Power,theardentfriendandadviserofEdmund Rice. ButtotheprogressnowachievedAlmightyGodaddedacross.Thetwo assistantsdecidedtoabandonthework ofteaching.Itwouldseemasthough theworksohappilybegunwastobe crushedbythisnewdevelopment.But thewaysofGodarewonderful.He hadHimselfremovedtheverycause thatwouldhavepreventedthiswork fromextending.ButwhatofEdmundRice!HisconfidenceinGod wasunshaken.Scarcelyhadthetwo hiredassistantsdepartedbeforetwo youngmen-townsmenofEdmund Rice-offeredthemselvesasvoluntary helpersinthecauseofChristianeducators.WiththeadventofThomas GrosvenorandPatrickFinn,andthe openingofthenewschoolatMt.Sion, anewerabeganandsoonalltheclassroomswerecrowdedtooverflowing withtheyouthofWaterford-thesons ofpoorworkingmenandthesonsof thewealthierbusinessmen.

ThelittlebandofworkersatMt. Sionwassoonjoinedbyanotherworthyman-JohnMulcahy.Aruleof lifewasdrawnup.Spiritualexercises, studyandteachingformedtheorder oftheday.Theyhadtheconsolation ofwelcomingafifthmember,inthe nephewofBishopPower.

TrulytheworkwasblessedinaspecialwaybyGod.

TheWorkSpreads.

ThefirstoffshootofthenewInstitutewasCarrick-on-Suir.Thehistory ofthisopeningisveryinteresting.A winemerchantofWaterford-aMr. O'Brien-wasgreatlytakenbythe markedchangethathadcomeoverthe youthofthecityasaresultoftheMt. Sionschool.Hewasagreatadmirer ofIgnatiusRice,whofeltthatinMr. O'BrienGodhaddesignssimilarto thosehewasfollowing.AsMr.O'Brien hadnofamilyties,itwassuggestedto himthathejointheMt.SionCommunity.Heagreed,butsuggestedthatii aschoolwereopenedatClonmelhe wouldfinancethebuildingofaschool there.Dr.Powerwasagreeable,but theparishpriest,afraidofanadditionalcollection,refusedtogivehis consent.WithDr.Power'sapproval, theofferwasmadetotheparishpriest ofCarrick-on-Suir.Heagreedand soonaschoolwasincourseofconstruction.Mr.O'Briencontributed £1,500towardsacommunityresidence, andtheschoolwasbuiltbypublicsubscription.EdmundRicesentalongas thefirstSuperiorofthenewopening Mr.Mulcahy,andhegavehimashis (ContinuedonPage13.)

InthetextquotedOurLordwas speakingofadults,fortheyonlycan haveactualfaith.ButChristalso said,"Unlessamanbebornofwater andtheHolyGhosthecannotenter intotheKingdomofGod."(John,3,5.)

TheCatholicWelfareOrganisation's BuffetandEntertainmentDepotinthe PortofFremantlewasestablishedto providefor,andentertain,sailorsof theUnitedNationswhohadshort leaveinFremantle,andtodoeverythingpossibletokeepthemenaway fromundesirableassociations.Asthe Depotadjoinstheparishchurch,and asthePortChaplainandtheOblate Fathersarealwaysavailabletohear confessionandtoadministertothe spiritualneedsofthemen,theproject hasfromtheoutsetbeenmostsuccessfulbothfromaspiritualandmaterial viewpoint.

TheDepotandBuffetarepatronised notonlybysailorsandmerchantseamen,butbysoldiersandairmenbased on,orcallingat,Fremantle.Theservicesareprovidedforallmembersof theUnitedNations'FightingForces.

WhentheC.W.O.decidedtoestablish theDepot,theOblateFathersmade availabletheparishhallandcertain articlesoffurniturefortheuseofthe C.W.O.forthedurationofthewar.

TheOrganisationisgreatlyindepted totheOblateFathersfortheirkindly andhelpfulgestureandhasagreedto returntheparishhalltotheminits originalconditionattheconclusionof thewar.

Attheoutset,theOrganisationdefrayedthe painting,renovating andrewiringthehallanderectinga servery.Theyalsoinstalledadditional articlesoffurniture,hotwatersystem, utensils.andotherrequirements.Becausetheexistingfacilitieshavebeen overtaxedlatterly,arrangementsare nowinhandtotakeoveratwo-storey buildinginFremantlefortheduration ofthewar,andtouseitinaddition totheexistinghallasaHostelforServicemen.

TheC.W.O.anditsAuxiliary,inconjunctionwiththePortChaplain, R.AN.V.R.,controlsandstaffsthe FremantleDepotandallofthecharges connectedtherewitharemetbythe Organisation.

Dancesareconductedinthemain halltwiceweekly,andahandisprovided.Itisestimatedthatnoless than60,000haveattendedthesedances, andthatanadditional78,000haveattendedtheDepot.Nofewerthan 28,000"sit-down"mealshavebeenservedand112,000buffetmealshavealso beenserved. TheexistingDepotandBuffetofthe C.W.O.consistsofalargehallwhichis usedfordances,abilliardroom,readingroom,library,writingroom,kitchen,gamesroomandshowerblock. Besidesreadingandwritingandbilliards,facilitiesareavailableforpingpong,badminton,shuttlecock,checkers, dartsandquoits.Theestablishment isopendailyfrom4p.m.to11p.m., andfrom7a.m.to11p.m.onSundays. Therearetenniscourtsadjoiningthe Depot,andshorts,shirts,towels,racquetsandtennisballsareavailable fortheuseofthemen.Theymay usetheshowers,andinthisconnection towelsandsoaparealsoprovided.

TheladiesoftheAuxiliarystaffthe Depotandcookandservemeals.In addition,thereare200selectedgirls whoactasdancingpartnersandhostesses.After7p.m.eachnight,alate mealisservedtoanyServicemanwho hasbeenunabletogetamealintown. Supperisservedlater.OnSundays breakfastisservedfrom7a.m.to11 a.m.,forServicemenwhoattendthe

porarilyorpermanentlyatFremantle, havetakentheopportunityofconveyingtheirthankstotheC.W.O.on manyoccasions.Inaddition,representativesofofficialorganisationsconnectedwithwelfareworkhaveexpressed theirappreciationtotheC.W.O.for thefacilitiesprovidedforthemen.

FOUNDATION

TheC.W.O.wasestablishedatthe outbreakofwarwiththefollowingoh-

"Toprovideforthewelfareofallsoldiersincamporelsewhere,bythe establishment,maintenanceand conductingofcentresforrecreationandsocialactivities,andby suchothermeansasshallbedecided,fromtimetotime."

Attheoutset,theOrganisationbuilt andequippedHutsinMilitaryCannps andlaterestablishedaDepotandBuffet,SportsandRecreationCentreat Fremantle.Now,theC.W.O.istoestablishaServicemen'sHostelatFremantle,tobeusedbysailors,soldiers andmerchantseamen.Itwillbeopen dailyformealsandentertainment.

TheCW.O.hasalsosuppliedwritingtables,chairs,sportsequipment, etc.,foruseinothercamps,and anotheractivityisthesubsidisingof

buffetsfortroopsonconvoysandthe provisionofcigarettes,literature,stationery,sweets,etc.,forsickand woundedmen.Suppliesofbarley sugarinairtightcontainershavebeen placedinlifeboatsonmerchantships passingthroughFremantle.

AmongtheAuxiliariesestablishedis oneforpreparingBraillevolumesfor blindedsoldiersandanotherforvisitingMilitaryHospitalsanddistributing comforts.TheApostolicDelegation PrisonersofWarInformationBureau, inthisState,isconductedbytheOrganisation,andenquiriesandmessages arefrankedtotheApostolicDelegation throughitsofficers.

Thefirstphaseofthework-thebuilding,furnishing.andpay- ingfortheHuts,hasbeencompletelyverysuccessfully.Thesec- ond,thatofsustainingtheeffort,commences,andisperhapsmore difficultthanthefirst.Themaintenanceofanattendant,thepro- visionofliteratureandstationery,andtheupkeepofthealtars, etc.,callforaconsiderablesumofmoney,andtheexecutive,realis- ingtheincreasingfinancialstresswhichthetimesinvolve,arere- luctanttobecompelledtomakeperiodicalappeals.Ithasthere- forebeendecidedtohaveoneannualdrivethroughouttheArch- diocese,andtoenrolCatholicsintheWelfareOrganisationata yearlyfeeofls.permember.Thecommitteeisconfidentthatit can,throughouttheArchdiocese,secureamembershipof10,000. Thedrive,whichwilltakeplaceonSunday,'July23,hasmuchto commendit.Themembershipfeeiswithinthereachofall,and thoughthefinancialcallupontheindividualwillbesowidespread astobenegligible,thegrandtotalanticipatedbytheorganisers willbeasubstantialsumandwillensuretheprogressandcon- tinuityofthework.Thedrivewill,moreover,lendagreater coherencytotheCatholicWelfareOrganisation,andwilldispel anydoubtsregardingtheloyalty,theinitiative,andthegenerosity oftheCatholiccommunityinthewareffort.

Onthewayinwecouldseetheland wasreceivingacolossalkickingaround bytheR.A.F.Flaresofallcolours everywhere,andeverynowandthena meteor-likeburningblobthatseemed likeaplanefalling.Ifeltbadenough, butwouldnothavechangedplaces withanyonenearCaenforquids!Well, wecontinuedinshoreandwaitedfor thedawn.Camethedawnandthen wecouldseeshellsfallingamongthe shipsfromshorebatteriesnotdealt with.HOwever,systematicallywe finishedtheseoffbybombardment, and,ofcourse,whiletheassaultships wentonunloading,wewaitedforthe Luftwaffe-invain,thankGod.As yetIhaven'tseenaGermanaircrafttouchwood!Bythatyoucanimagine howcompleteistheprotectiongiven theArmyandNavybythecombined AirForces.Sowhiletheshipswere themback,wehadwhatIcallagrand- standview.Wecouldseethebarges hitthebeachanddrawofftobereplacedbymoreloadedones-sawfires ashoreandheavyexplosionsthrewup dusteverynowandagain-andwe werestillunmolestedbytheLuftwaffe -sotheonlythingthatstopsunloadingistheweather,andeventhat countsforverylittle.

Ofcourseourmainjobisescortwork, andIcanassureyouwehavebeen particularlybusyandliketobefora whileIsuppose!ButIamsureour jobisabouttheeasiest-orseemsso. Iwouldn'tcaretochangewiththe Armyforafortune.Can'twriteany more,ampracticallyexhausted.but thiswillgiveyousomethingtochew on.Ican'tpossiblywriteanaccount ofthestorytoall,soIhopeyoumightpassthisontoeveryonewhois interestedintheSecondFront.

TheEighthCommandmentprimarily forbidsthegivingoffalseevidence,especiallyinacourtofjustice,against one'sneighbour,bywhichhisreputationisunjustlyinjured.Butbecause thesameeffectisproducedbyrash judgments,calumny,detraction,lying, etc.,allthesemattersarealsoforbiddenbythisCommandment.ThepositiveaspectoftheCommandmentprescribesthetellingofthetruth.

Friday,June30,wasagalanight fortheHighgateTennisClub,when theyheldtheirseconddanceofthe season.Thehallwasdecoratedfor theoccasionwithbrightlycoloured lanternsandstreamers,andwascomfortablyfilledwithyoungdancers. TheAirForceandtheArmywerewell represented,andamongthedancers werenoticedseveralofouryoungmatronswhowereformermembersofthe Club.MaxJones'four-pieceorchestra suppliedexcellentmusic,andthefloor wasinperfectconditionfordancing, thankstotheeffortsofGerardand PatRussell,whospentmanyhoursof hardworkonitwhileonleavefrom theArmy.
