OnJune28,1894,FathersGaughran, HennesseyandO'Ryanarrivedin WesternAustralia.Theywerefollowed,afewmonthslater,byFatherT. Ryan.TheywereIrishmenall,who, likethegreatmissionariesofSt.Pat-
rickofold,becamepilgrimsandexiles ofErinforthecauseofChristandof HisKingdomonearth-theholyCatholicChurch.
ThenamesofthosepioneerOblates, andoftheirworthysuccessors throughouttheyearsinenlikeFather CallanandFatherJohnNeville--are destinedtobeheldingratefulremembranceaslongasthestarsofthe SouthernCrossshineabove"ourlovelymorningland."

OnWednesdayevening,inSt.Joseph'sConvent,thechildrengavea concertandacantata,entitled"JubileeBells."InfiveactstheBellof Childhood,theBellofBoAhood,the BellofAllHallows,theBellofPriesthood,andtheBellofSouls,werebeautifullypresented.Fairiesariddwarfs addedcolourandmerrimenttothe variousscenes.TheJubileeI3ellswas writtenbytheformerAuntBessy,of theBushies'Pageof"TheRecord." Thechildrenhonouredtheoccasion bygivingDr.McMahonagoldRosary beads,andanilluminatedaddress,designedatSt.Joseph'sConvent,South Perth.Dr.McMahonthankedthe children,expressinghisdelightwith thepreciousbeadsandtheartisticaddress.Ofcourse,hezasathome alwayswith"thegoodpeople,"and now,therecanbenodoubtwhatever aboutthefairies.Apartyfollowed and"thelitlepeople"showedabig capacityforeats.

Dr.McMahonandFatherDunne saidafewwords,andthenthedoorsof thewingwereopenedtothesurprised exclamationsofall,forthethree Jubileecakeswereilluminatedwith candles,andasumptuoussupperwas laidouttemptingly.Thecakefrom thepeoplewasinsilvertiers,thatfrom. theSisterswasagoldenshowerof rosesmountinguptothreetiers,on thetopmostwasaPateninicingcommemoratingtheday.Thethirdcake, thegiftoftheSistersoftheGood Shepherd,wasalivingmodelofSt. Columba'sChurch,everydetailaccuratelydone,eventhecolouringofthe rosewindow,thegreenlawns,thefing pointsofthetower,andthecurveand' tintsofthemissiontilesandwalls.It washardtobelieve'thatitwasalleatable,allcake,andnocamouflage.But thatwasprovedonthefollowingWednesday,whenthecantatawasrepeated forthepeople.Thecakewasthen cut,distributed,andenjoyedbypeople andchildren.
OnFridayafternoonthechildrenof St.Patrick's,Carey-street,entertained Dr.McMahonandFatherO'Leary withaconcert,averyhappyaffair,in whichtheactorsthemselveshatgreat fun,especiallytheBabes'chorusand theGolliwogs.ThechildrenpresentedtheJubilarianwithaspiritualbouquet,designedandexquisitelycolouredbyMissJeanJackson,andasolid leathertravellingcase.

Itisespeciallynoticeableinthematterofsexrelations.Thereisanurgentsearchforaremedy.TheGovernmentinitscareforhealthofthe communitydesirestostemthespread ofvenerealdiseaseandtoinstruct youngpeoplefortheirownprotection. Publiclessonsonsexbothforchildreninschoolandformembersof youthorganisationshavebeensuggested.
\\'ehavenoconfidenceinsuchproposalsandweseegravedangerin them.Ouraimoughttobetolessen ratherthantoincreasetheartificial stimulationoferoticemotions.More modestyandmorereticenceareundoubtedneedsofourtime.
Itisnot,however,tobeinferred fromthisthatweareopposedto schoolcoursesofpersonalhygiene,parentcraft,domesticscienceandthelike -healtheducationratherthansex education.
SilenceNottheChurch'sPolicy. Knowingthattheinstinctforreproductionisfundamentalandverystrong, herconstanttraditionhasbeennotto arouseitprematurally,nottoencourageprecocityinthismatter,buton thecontrarytodirectthechild's thoughtsandimaginationsawayfrom thingsofsexratherthantofixthem there.
ParentsShouldBeInstructors.
Shewishesthechildrentobeintroducedgently,withoutshock,tothe factsoflifeandhermindisthatthis introductionshouldbeprovidedby theparentsthemselves.
Unfortunatelymanyparentslackthe knowledgeandpowerofexpression necessarytogivetheinformation,and sotheirchildrenareleftwithoutguidancetoreceivetheirfirstknowledge fromtaintedandevendangerous sources.

ByVERYREV.T.HAUGH,O.M.I.As1944markstheGoldenJubileeof theOblatesinAustralia,1 herewith give,byrequest,ashortsketchoftheir laboursinthisdistantSouthernLand.
Thisreviewincludesnuthrilling storyofadventurenorspectacularachievements,butratherthesteadyploddingofasmallbandofOblates,thousandsofmilesfromtheirnearestconfreres,andincircumstancesnotalways ofaveryfavourablekind.
Intheearlyninetiesofthelastcentury,BishopGibney,ofPerth,invited theAnglodrishProvincialtostarta foundationinhisvastdiocese.It dearfromthecorrespondencewhich ensued,thatHisLordshipwishedthe Fatherstoundertakeathreefoldtask:
1)TotakechargeoftheFremantle Parish;(2)toconductanindustrial schoolforboys;t3),tobethemissionersofthediocese.Thiswasan ambitiousprogramme,involvinglarge resourcesandpersonnel.
OnJune28,1894,threeOblate Fathers,A.Gaughran(Provincial>,R. Hennessy,andD.O'Ryan,arrivedin Fremantle,followedafewmonthslater byFatherT.Ryan.ThePortofW.A. wasthenonlyascatteredsettlement ofnarrowsand-sweptstreets,andwith asmallpopulation.Butasthenew harbourwasincourseoferection,there werebrightprospectsforthefuture. FremantlewassoontobecometheprincipalgatewaytoAustraliafromthe West.
VeryRev.FatherGaughran,having establishedtheHouseinFremantle,returnedtoEnglandin1895,leaving FatherT.RyanasfirstRector.
TheearlyOblatesfoundtheold churchbuiltbytheBenedictinesin poorrepairandtoosmallforthegrowingpopulation.Butbeforearrangements couldhemadeforanewchurch,Father Ryanhadtodevotehisenergiestothe erectionandequippingoftheIndustrialSchool.TheBishopmadeavailable300acresnearMonger'sLakefor thispurpose.Thebuildingwasbegun in1896,and1898St.Kevin'sIndustrial Schoolwasopened.Theinitialcost wasaboutf6,000.Inthemeantime,
FatherP.O'Reillyandfourlay-brothersarrivedfromIreland.Sothe problemofstaffingtheschoolwas solved.FatherD.O'Ryanwasits firstDirector.
TheOblatessincetheirarrivalwere toobusyandtoofewinnumbersto undertakemissionsandretreatsregularlyinthediocese.HencetheReclemptoristFatherswerebroughtinto meetthisdemandin1898. Although itmightseemacaseoflostopportunitiesfortheOblateFathers,thefact isthattherelationsbetweenthesetwo Congregationshavebeenfromthevery outsetofthehappiestandmostcordialkind.
FatherRyannextfacedthetaskof thenewchurchinFremantle.This magnificenttemple,althoughstillunfinished,isatributetothecourageand visionoftheearlyFathersinthis land.Thebuildingwasbegunin1898, andthefoundationlaidinMarchof thatyear,andwasformallyblessed andopenedonJune3,1900,byBishop Gibney,amidstscenesofgreatenthusiasm.FatherHunt,C.SS.R.,preached theoccasionalsermon,andFatherCox, O.M.I.(recentlyarrived),sangthe HighMass.
St.Patrick'sChurchisdesignedin 14th.centuryGothic.Thewallsare builtinlocalstone;whilethedoorways,traceriedwindows,columnsand turretsareinSydneyfreestone.The altarofwhitemarbleisinlaidwithornamentsofvariouscolours.Thecombinationofmassivesolidityandgrace ofarchitectureimpartstothisfine churchatoneofsolemnityandchaste grandeurunsurpassedbyanyother churchinWestAustralia.St.Patrick's Churchhasseatingaccommodationfor 850;butwhenoccasionarisesover1,000 canbefittedinwithoutovercrowding.
WewerelookingforwardtoitscompletionfortheJubileeyear,1944,hut. unfortunately,thewarhasprevented therealisationofourhopes.
FatherCoxwasVicarofMissions, 1901-11.ThisexemplaryOblateupheldatalltimesthehighesttraditions oftheCongregation.Hewasresponsibleforthechurch-schoolsatEastFremantleandBeaconsfield,andtheneat
devotionalchurchandtwo-storeyed PresbyteryatNorthFremantle.Dur inghisregimetheparishflourished,and theIndustrialSchoolatGlendalough morethanjustifiedthelabourexpendedonitbysuccessiveDirectorsand lay-brothers.
FatherCox,after11yearsoffruitful workinAustralia,wasappointedVicarApostolicoftheTransvaalin1911. FatherCallansucceededhimasVicar ofMissions,1912.26 Duringhisfirst threeyearsinAustralia,FatherCallan residedatGlendalough.whileFather FlynnwasSuperiorofFremantle. FatherCallanwasresponsibleforthe spaciouspresbyteryofSt.Patrick's, erectedin1916,withaccommodation for8Fathers.Healsohadthegracefulturretsbuiltonthefrontofthe church,whichgavethefinishingtouch t,thebeautifulfacadefacingtheIndianOcean.
By1920Fremantlehaddeveloped intoacityof25,000people.Itwas butnatural,therefore,toexpectthat itwouldbesubdividedintoseveral parishes.Dr.Clune,Archbishopof Perth,askedtheVicarofMissionsto giveupthatdistrictknownasNorth Fremantle,asitwastobecomeaseparateparishincareofasecularpriest. ThepositionoftheIndustrialSchool camealsounderreview.TheWest AustralianGovernment.ratherlenient initsattitudetowardsjuveniledelinquents,consideredaReformatoryunnecessary.Theyoungerboyswould besenttooneoftheorphanages,while theothersweretoheboardedatsome respectablehomeunderthesupervision ofwelfareofficers.Thustheraison d'etreofSt.Kevin'sIndustrialSchool ceased,andFatherHayes(Directorfor severalyears)hadthemelancholyprivilegeofclosingitdownin1921.
Aftermuchcorrespondenceandnegotiation,theOblateFatherssoldGlendaloughtotheLittleSistersofthePoor, andgaveupNorthFremantleinfavourofthesecularclergy.Itwaswith regrettheFatherssurrenderedthese, asmuchOblatemoneyandlabourhad beenexpendedonthem,andourlaboursinbothsphereshadbeenblessed withsuccessfor20years.
In1925anhistoricagreementwas signedbyDr.ChineandourVicar ofMissions,whichfixedtheboundaries oftheFremantleParish"inperpetuum,"andentitledtheOblatestoconductretreatsinthediocese.ThisagreementwasdepositedinRome,Prop. Fid.,156/25.
In1926FatherCallansoughtafoundationintheArchdioceseofMelbourne.Hisrequestwasgrantedby

ThecomfortableandquietinterioroftheMelville tainedbytheCatholicWelfareOrganisationfillsaveryrealneedasfaras theChaplainisconcerned,andIam convinced,providesauniqueservice equallyappreciatedbythemen.
TheHutatMelvillewasinbeingand wasflourishingbeforeIwasattached toMelville,sothatIcansaylittleregardingitsinauguration.ButIthink thatifIdescribedit,itwouldbepossibleforyoutogainsomeideaofthe structureitself,thesurroundings,and itsplaceinArmylife.
TheHutitselfisbuilt wood, paintedcreamwithgreenrelief,and islinedandcelledinplasterboardand fittedwithalargenumberofwindows. Themainroomitselfisprobablysixty toeightyfeetlongbyaboutthirty wide,whichgivesaveryusefulfloor area;andatoneendthereisalarge andcosyfireplace,which,Icanassure you,isextremelypopularinthewinter time.
Abovethismodernfireplacethereis alargeclock,andinfrontofitseveral tableshavebeenplacedwhereatmen whoarestudyingforexams.,etc.,may workwithoutfearofdisturbance.
Theroomisenteredthroughadoor placedinthecentreofoneside,the fireplacebeingattheright-handend; atthelefthandendoftheroomthere isasmallsanctuary,concealedwhen notinusebyadrapedcurtain,and thisinturnisflankedononesideby theChaplain'sroom,andontheother bythatoftheofficer-in-charge.This gentleman,Mr.McCann,ispermanentlyestablishedattheHut,andisconstantlyinattendance.Hisroomis providedwithatelephone,alibrary, andjustoutsidehisdooraradio.
TheequipmentoftheHutconsists almostentirelyofwritingdesks,chairs, andforms.Thisisinconsequence, apparently,ofthesettledpolicyofthe C.W.O.toexcludegamesofanoisy nature,andtoencouragethewriting oflettershomeandstudygenerally.
Itwouldappear,frommyobservation,thatthereisconsiderablemerit inthispolicy,astheHutiscontinuallyfullofmen,eachwaitinghisturnat thetables.NootherhutattheCamp providesthedegreeofquietnessnecessaryforstudyandwriting. AlongonesideoftheHutalarge verandahprovidesshelterfromthe

sunandadditionalaccommodationfor themenattendingMass,andisitself providedwithcanechairsofthemost comfortabletype.
Then,ofcourse,thereisthelawn. Now.weareratherproudofthislawn atMelville,asitistheonlyoneatthe Campsofar,andasitlendsaveryintimateappearancetotheHutitpro. videsabeautifulgreensettingtothe wholeensemblewhichissetoffbythe creampaintedfencerails.Evenon thewarmestofdaystheC.W.O.Hut hasacoolair,beingsurroundingby tallshadytrees,anditstandsoutwell, fcaingtheCampCompoundacrossthe road.
TheHutiscontinuallyinuse.On severaloccasionsIampleasedtosay thatmenattendingMassfromallunits overflowedthehall,filledthelawns, andwereevenlookingintheback windowsintheirendeavourtohear Mass.Trulyasatisfyingsight!
ImadeareferenceearliertothepolicyoftheC.W.O.Itwillberealised, ofcourse,thattheHutisnotunderthe controloftheChaplain:acommittee managestheaffairsoftheC.W.O.and providesapermanentofficer,whomanagestheHut.Naturallytheofficer co-operatesandassiststheChaplain_ whoisveryappreciativeofthegood workoftheC.W.O.,butwhatIam tryingtostressisthattheChaplain hasnotnecessarilyanythingtodo withadministrationorpolicy.
ForthatreasonIfeelfreetosay that,inmyopinion,theC.W.O.fillsa veryrealneedinCamplife.Theidea ofmaintainingquietintheHutis splendid,evenifnovel.Itgivesto thosemenwhowishitaroomwhere everyfacilityismadeavailableforthe purposesofstudyorwriting.Disciplineismaintainedbyanexperiencedofficer,whowasacommissioned officeratthelastwar,andwhoisnow abovemilitaryage.Suppliesofstationeryaremaintainedand,infact, allfacilitiesareprovidedwhichmay assistintheintellectualandmoral advancementofthemenofalldenominationswhomayheinCampatMelville.

AmongthedecreesoftheFourthPlenaryCouncilofAustraliaand NewZealand.thatrelatingtothematterofmixedmarriagewasof particularimportance.TheBishopsnotedwithregretthat,despitetheannualinstructionsgiveninallchurches,"mixedmarriagesareannuallyincreasingwithlamentableresults."After settingouttheteachingoftheChurchonthesupernaturalaspect ofmarriageandtheCatholicideal,thePastoralproceedstoexaminethehazardsofmixedmarriages,particularlyastheyen- dangerthefaithofthechildren.Thedivergenceofoutlookbetweenthepartiesonthefundamentalissueofreligionisstressed asasourceofmaritalunhappiness."Intheverymomentof union,"statetheBishops,"theystandatanunspeakabledistance fromeachotherinallthatconcernsthesoul-itsfaith,itshopes andaspirations."
ThePastoraltraceshowcompromiseonthepartoftheCatholicoftenarisesinthehome,andtheoutwardmanifestationsof theFaithtendmoreandmoretobesuppressed.Theparticular difficultiesarisingoutoftheeducationofthechildrenareindicated,andhowthechilditselfistornbetweenconflictingloyalties. ThePastoralconcludesthatitis"rarethattheCatholicdoesnot sufferdeteriorationofsoulandthatindifferencedoesnotcreepin."' Whereeventhepromisesarekept,thereisalwaysaninabilityto speakandacttogetheronwhatconcernsGod,andtheChurch.the soulandthehereafter.Wheretheyarenotkept,discordgrows intodisunion,andmarriage,insteadofbeingthehelptosalvation whichGodintendedittobe,becomesapositivehindrance.This istheconsideredopinionoftheBishopsafterthirtyyears'experi- encefollowingthepromulgationofthe"NeTemere"decree."Experienceshows."declaresthePastoral,"thatthechiefcauseofdefectionintheChurchisduealmostentirelytomixedmarriages."
* * Thepromulgationofthe"NeTemere"decreein1908provoked averitablesectarianstorm.PeoplesaidtheChurchwascompletelyunreasonableandhigh-handed.Yetafter36yearsthe Hierarchy,sofarfromrelaxingtheconditionsofmixedmarriage, wasmoved,evenattheriskofgreaterinitialdefection,tomake themyetmorestringent.AllofwhichdemonstratesbeyondfurtherdisputehowtheChurchdisapprovesofmixedmarriagesand howSheisinducedtotoleratethematallonlyfromfearofgreater evilsandscandalsbeingprecipitated.Thealmostcertainspiritual shipwreckoftheCatholicparty,ofthechildren,orofboth,is providedagainstbythedifficulty,amountingtoimpossibility,of obtainingadispensationinthecasewherethewomanisanonCatholic.Thatisveryunderstandable.Inmostcasesitisthe motheralonewhoistheeducatorofthechildren.Evenifshe doesnotenjoyamonopolyhersisthepredominatinginfluence. Averysaddutybringsustogether thismorning,namely,tochantthe OfficefortheDeadandtoassistatthe HolySacrificeoftheMassforthereposeofthesoulofthelateFather Henebry,andthelateMrs.Angela Bogueandherson,whomettheir deathintragiccircumstancesonWednesdaylast.
Whenwehearofthedeathofa youngpriest,weareapttosay,"What apitythathewastakenawayinthe primeoflifeatthethresholdofhis career.'ButtospeakthusistoforgettheinscrutablewaysofGod.For weshouldconsidernotthebriefperiod ofactivity-Godallowedhim,fortime isonlyanaccidentalmeasureofmerit. Rathershouldwebearinmindthe puleself-sacrificingzealwhichplaced uponhislifeastamp,acharacterthat cannotbemeasuredbythestandard ofspaceortime,becauseitisofheavenratherthanofearth.
ThelateFatherHenebrywasonly31 Yearsofage.BorninCloncunny, Piltown,Co.Kilkenny,hewaseducatedatSt.John'sCollege,Waterford,a Collegewhichhasgivenmanyzealous prieststotheArchdiocese.Ordained in1937,hearrivedinWesternAustraliathesameyear.Hewasstationed forashortperiodatHighgateHill, thenatLeonoraforfouryears,locum tenensatBedfordPark-Bayswaterfor ayear,andlastSeptemberhewasappointedParishPriestofKellerberrin. Hewasazealous,pious,efficientpriest, whodidanincalculableamountof goodintheshortperiodofhisministrywhowontheesteemofallinthe parishesinwhichheworked.AsI speakofhimthismorning,thewords ofWisdom(IV.,13)comeunbidden tomylips'-"Beingmadeperfectina shortspacehefulfilledalongtime." Therewasconcentratedintheseven yearsofhispriestlylifeenoughearnest unselfishactivitytosupplyformany yearsofsuccessfulwork.Theenergy ofwill,activityofmindandloveof heartthatheconcentratedonhislaboursforthepeopleamongstwhomhe worked,couldhavebeenspreadover fivetimesaslongaperiod,andstill producedwonderfulresults.
LiketheMasterWhomheservedso faithfully,hewasalwaysgoingabout doinggood.Atthetimeofhisdeath hewasonhiswaytoanoutsidedistrict 25milesdistanttoarrangeforthelittle childrentheretoattendtheReligious HolidaySchoolatKellerberrin.What noblerexampleofdevotiontodutydo werequire?Whatgreaterproofof hisuntiringzeal,andofhisinterestin thelittleonesofhisflock?Surely theirgratefulandprayerfulheartsare liftedupto-day,andwillbeliftedup formanyadayinsupplicationtoGod

Generoustoafault,unassuming,retiring,lovable,loyal,industrious,zealous, hisuntimelydeathwillleaveavoidin ourranks.Tohissorrowingparents andrelativesintheOldLand,whomI haveadvisedbycable,weextendour sinceresympathy.Theirburdenof griefwill,weknow,beconsiderablyalleviatedbytheconsolingthoughtthat duringthesevenyearsofhispriestly activitiesamongstus,heprovedhimselftrulyamanofGod-aworthy,unselfish,zealouspriest,acredittothe landthatgavehimbirth,acreditto theCatholichomewherehewasencouragedinhisvocationtothepriesthood,acredittotheCollegeofSt. John,Waterford,wherehereceivedhis philosophicalandtheologicaltraining.
Aswelookonthethreecasketsthat containthemortalremainsofthethree victimsoftheterribletragedy,weare remindedofthesoberingwordsofOur LordasrelatedbySt.'Matthew(XXV., 13):"Watchye,therefore,because vouknownotthedaynorthehour." Wemustalwaysbeprepared.Though theydiedsuddenly,weareconfident thatthey'didnotdieunprovidedly. Onlyafewhoursbefore,FatherHenebryhadcelebratedHolyMass,at
Boguewasafaithfulandloyalmember oftheHolyNameSocietyinhisparish.ThelateMrs.Bogue,too,wasan exampletoallbyreasonofherexemplaryCatholiclife.Andsothereis theperfectpeaceofChristianFaith andChristianHopeinourheartstodayasweprayforthehappyrepose ofthesoulsofallthreeintheconsecratedwordsoftheChurch'sLiturgyforthe Dead-"Eternalrestgrantuponthem, OLord,andmayperpetuallightshine uponthem"-"PieJesu,Domine,dona eisrequiem."Amen.

NoCatholiccouldpossesslandnor exerciseanyrightofvotinginhisown land.Hischildrencouldnotbeeducated.Itwasacapitaloffencetohe p,c,entatHolyMassortooffersheltertoapriest.Liberalrewardswere offeredtothosewhowouldbetraythe whereaboutsofapriest.Therewas noemploymentforaCatholicchildin anytradeorcommercialenterprise.
IftheProtestantminorityhoped thatby'thesepenalmeasuresitwould crushouttheoldFaith,thenitwas doomedtogreatdisappointment.Mass wasstillofferedandto-dayinmany asecretglen,thehallowed"Mass Rock"stillremainsasasilentwitness ofthedefeatofatyrannyofanage thatisnotsolongpast.Children weresentawaysecretlytoEuropeto beeducatedandvocationstothe Priesthoodwerenumerous.These younglevitesreturnedtoIreland,and, despitethe"priceonhishead,"each performedhispriestlyministrationsto thegreatconsolationofthepeople.
ThePenalLawspressedmostharshlyonthepoor.Whataheartbreak itwasfortheIrishfatherandmother toseetheirchildrengrowingupignorantandilliterate,deprivedofallculture-thatcultureforwhichtheirIrelandwasoncesofamous.Butthey sufferedthesehardshipsbecausethey lovedtheirCatholicreligion-they knewthatGodwouldnotheunmindfuloftheirsufferingsandinHisown goodtimewouldgrantrelief.
HowproudyouandImustfeelnow whenwelookbackonthevictories ofthoseancestorsofours!Howthe exampleoftheirdeterminationtolive anddiefortheirCatholicFaithshould stimulateustogreatereffortsto spreadbyourexamplethesweet odourofChrist.
IfthePenalLawsweresevereand inmanyplacesrigidyenforced,there wereotherlocalitieswheretheiradministrationwasnotcarriedoutwithseverity.OftenithappenedthatakindlydisposedProtestantlandlordsympathisedwithhisIrishtenantand helpedthemtolivealittlemorehappilythantheGovernmentintended themto.
It'wasinanatmospherelikethis thatEdmundRicespenthisboyhood andearlymanhood.DespitetherigourofthePenalCode,heattendedone ofthemanysecretschools-hedge schoolsastheywerecalled-thatcarriedoninspiteofGovernmentofficials.Heseemstohavegotonwell atschool,andlaterheattendedcommercialclassesatKilkennyandqualifiedhimselfforhisintendedcareerin ornmerce.ButGodhadotherdesignsandHequietlyledHischosen sonbyacircuitousroutetothePlan Hehadpreparedforhim.
EdmundRice-EarlyHistoryandLife asa'CatholicGentleman.
EdmundRice,thethirdofafamily ofsixsons,wasbornatWestcourt,on theoutskirtsofCallan,Co.Kilkenny, in1762. Hisfamilywasnotedfor strictadherencetoCatholicprinciples, despitetherigoursofthePenalCode. EdmundRicereceivedhisearlyeducationata"hedgeschool,"andlaterhe attendedschoolatKilkenny,wherehe qualifiedforthecommerciallifeheintendedtofollow.Heenteredtheserviceofhisunclewhoconducteda thrivingexportandimportbusinessat Waterford.Edmundeventuallysucceededhisuncleandbycloseattention tobusinesshesoonamassedaconsiderablefortune.
Althoughhewasregardedasasuccessfulmanoftheworld,Edmund Ricewasnotoftheworld.Thewealth hehadsecureddidnotmakehimfeel thatheshouldholdhimselfalooffrom hispoorercountrymen.Therewasno St.VincentdePaulSocietyinthose days,butEdmundRiceorganiseda charitablesocietyforthereliefofthe poorofWaterford.ThissocietyprescribedforitsmembersdailyMass,the frequentreceptionoftheSacraments, prayerandspiritualreading,aswellas worksofpenanceandcharity.He wasalsoamemberofaWaterfordSocietyforthereliefof''DistressedRoom Keepers."Itisrecordedthatoften thefundsofthesocietyweretaxedto theutmostandftwasthemunificence ofEdmundRicethatenableditto carryon.Itwasatthisperiodofhis lifethathemarried.Buthiswifedied youngandlefthimwithalittledaughter.SeeingtheHandofGodinthis distress,hebegantoprayforenlightenmentthathemightknowtheWill ofGodinhisregard.Hefeltanurge todevotehimselftotheserviceof God,butinwhatcapacityhecould notdecide. Itwasimpossibletoappraisethe workoftheOblateFathersinFremantle,because,likealltrulyapostolic work,springingfromapureintention, andsupernaturalmotive,itwasknown onlytoGod.Butifthepeopleof Fremantlecouldgloryinthesplendidtraditionsthathadbeenestablished,theywereindebtedforthatto thezealoftheOblateFathers;ifFremantlecouldgloryinthebeautiful churchofSt.Patrick,standingout, thoughunfinished,inallitsGothic beauty,thecreditwasdueverylargelytotheenergy,enterprise,foresight andzealoftheFathers,especiallythe lateFatherTomRyanandthelate FatherEugeneCallan,whosenames weresocloselyassociatedwithit.The memoryoftheOblateFatherswould beperpetuatedinSt.Patrick'sChurch: buttheirmemorywouldstillmorebe indeliblyimprintedinthefleshytabletsoftheheartsofthemanywhom theyservedsofaithfullyandzealously duringtheyearstheyworkedinFremantle.
HisGracespokeoftheunselfishness anddisinterestednessoftheOblate Fathers.Asanexamplehementioned thefactthatthechequewhichhewas abouttopresentwasintendedforthe Fathersthemselves,butintheirunselfishnessanddisinterestednessthey hadrequestedthatthegiftbeused entirelytopurchaseamarblealtar railsforthechurch.
Theolddebtwasliquidated,His Graceconcluded,andanewfundwas beingbuiltupon,andwhenvictory came,assurelyitwould,thenthey wouldrenderthankstoGodbycompletingthechurch,thatwouldspeak tofuturegenerationsofthezealand devotionoftheOblateFathers,andof thewarmthandsincerityofthefaith ofFremantleCatholics.
VeryRev.FatherHaugh,O.M.I.,in acceptingthetestimonial,saidhewas facedwiththealmostimpossibletask ofconveyinginwordshisthanksto everyonewhohadcontributedtowards thesuccessoftheevening.The chequewhichhadbeenpresentedto himwouldbeusedforthecompletion of-St.Patrick'sChurch.ThismagnificentGothictemplewhencompleted wouldbeanornamenttothecityand oneofthefinestecclesiasticalbuildings inWesternAustralia.Catholicpeople realisedthattheChurchwastheshrine .ofDivineGrace,wheretheirsouls'were refreshedfromthecradletothegrave. TheyrealisedthattheChurchwasthe "HouseofGod."Hencetheirgeneros- ityandzealfortheembellishmentof St.Patrick's.FatherHaughspokein feelingtermsoftheCatholicsofFremantle,theirunswervingloyaltytotheOblatesoverthepastfiftyyears.He referredtothegrandspiritexisting amongstallthecitizens,dueinno smallmeasuretotheMayor,whose breadthofvisipnandsenseoffair-play wereproverbial.
HisWorshiptheMayorexpressed hisadmirationfortheOblateshehad known.Herecalledhismanyassociationswithhisfriend,FatherNeville.
He(theMayor)regardedtheCatholic Churchanditsinstitutionsasthe greatestbulwarkto-dayagainsttheinsidiousdangerstooursociallife.

FatherHaughreceivedthetermsofan agreement,whichwasdulysignedby theArchbishopandtheOblaterepresentativeonApril10,1939,andwhich clearedupalongdrawn-outbusiness. BythisagreementtheOblatesgaveup thedistrictofEastFremantle,retaininginperpetuitytheParishofFremantleandBeaconsfield.AMission-Staff wouldbeestablishedinSt.Patrick'sto conductthemissionsandretreatsof thediocese,alternatingwiththeRedemptoristsinthiswork.
Dr.PrenclivilleinvitedtheSuperior topreachtheLentenLecturesatthe Cathedralin1939,andinthesameyear wegaveathree-weeks'Missionthere. Sincethenourstaffhasgiven120MissionsandRetreatsintheWest,and about40occasionalsermons.Weare nowfirmlyestablishedinthisappropriateO.M.I.work,whichshouldnever havebeenneglectedinfavourofparochiallabours.
Atpresent,then,theOblateFathers havechargeof2,500soulsinFremantle andBeaconsfield.Averydevotional churcha-aserectedinthelatterin 1936anddedicatedtoChristtheKing.
Ifandwhenapresbyteryis at Beaconsfield,thereisprovisionfortwo Fatherstobeinresidence.WithparishactivitiesandtheMissionsathand, atleastsevenFathersarenecessaryin Fremantle.
Churchservicesarebroadcastfrom St.Patrick'sseveraltimeseachyear. Theparishispracticallyfreeofdebt, andtherelationsbetweentheOblates andtheArchbishopandsecularclergy areashappyandcordialascouldbe desired.
Sorrento,ParishandHouseofMissions.
Asalreadymentioned,afoundation wassecuredintheMelbourneArch. diocesein1926. OnMay16ofthat year,FatherCallanannouncedtothe littlecongregationtherethattheOblateFatherswereabouttotakecharge ofthedistrict.Afewweekslater, FatherHavesarrivedfromtheWest andwentintoresidenceinacottage loanedbyaMrs.Devine,untilsuch timeasapresbyterywouldbebuiltTheworkentrustedtousinSorrento wasatrulyOblateone.Therewere onlyabout150Catholicsscatteredover thepeninsulafromPortseatoRye. Theywerepoor,andfromaspiritual pointofview,moreorlessabandoned. Itistrueapriestcamefromtimeto timetosayMass.especiallyduringthe crowdedholidayseason.Butthere wasnoCatholicschoolwithin30miles. Theresultwasthatthepeoplewithfew exceptionswereignorantoftherudimentsofourHolyFaith.Forthe firsttwoYearstheRectorcookedhis ownbreakfastandtea,andwenttothe localhotelforhismiddaymeal.His meansofconveyanceoverthescattered parishwasanantiquatedmotor-cycle, whichrepeatedlyrefusedtostrikeoil! Thelittlechurchwasinpoorrepair andneededacompleteoverhauling.
However,zealincatecheticalinstruction,andgoodwillonthepartofthe people-abovealltheRealPresencein theirmidst,graduallyeffectedwonders amongthelittleflock.Afterthenecessarysanctionswereobtained,astart wasmadeonthenewpresbyteryin 1928,andbyOctoberofthatyeartwo Fatherswereinresidence.Thenew building,whichcostabout£4,000,was blessedandopenedofficiallybyArchbishopManixonJanuary13,1929.On thisoccasionHisGraceacknowledged publiclyhisindebtednesstotheOblateFathersfortheirself-sacrificingeffortsinsuchdifficultcircumstances.He

In1931anewchurchwasopenedin Rye,attheotherendoftheparish,at acostof£1,100.TheArchbishop,on thisoccasion,confirmed30candidates.
DuringthisyeartheSistersof MercypurchasedalittlecottageinSorrento,withaviewtoopeningaCatholicschool.Theurgencyofthelatter needsnoelaboration.Thenewschool wasbuiltattheendof1931,aidwas formallyblessedbyDr.Mannixin January,1932.Therewere30pupils tostartwith.
ThroughthegenerosityoftheArchbishop,FatherHayespurchaseda motor-truck,whichhehadfittedoutto conductthechildrenfromtheoutlying districtstothecentralschool.This buswasdrivenbyoneoftheFathers onitsdailyrunof30milestobringthe blessingsofCatholiceducationtothe littleBushies.Theexperimentprovedhighlysuccessful,andwasprobably thefirstofitskindinAustraliatosolve withlimitedresourcesthedifficulties ofreligioustrainingforoutbackchildren.
thechurchatSorrento wasrenovatedthroughout.Stationsof theCross,marblealtar,andthreestainedglasswindowswereinstalled,giving toSt.Mary's,StaroftheSea,atruly artisticanddevotionalatmosphere.
Withtheadditionofanewconvent thisyear,theparishofSorrentois fullyequippedfromeverypointof view.Whowouldhavethoughtin 1926thatsuchaprogrammecouldhave beencarriedoutwithsuchslender resources!Assuredlythepeopleof SorrentoarejustlyhappyforthearrivaloftheOblateFathers.
Missions(EasternStates).
ThefirstOblateMissioninVictoria wasgivenbyFathersAhearneand PurcellinWestMelbourne,Octolio625,1929.Sincethentheworkhas forgedaheadyearbyyear,andwith theincreaseintheMission-Staff,our labourshaveextendedalloverthe EasternStatesfromQueenslandtoTasmania.From1930to1940theFathers fromSorrentoconductedover200Missionsand300Retreats,andeachyear hadtorefusemanyapplicationsowing tothelimitednumberofFathers.Our Missionsatalltimeshavebeenconductedaccordingtothetraditionsof ourCongregationandhavebeensingularlyblessed.LaudeturJesusChristusetMariaImmaculata.
Thisdreadfulwar,inwhichAustraliaissodeeplyinvolved,has,ofcourse, curtailedmissionaryactivity.But wheninGod'sgoodtimepeaceisrestoredtotheSouth-WestPacific,St. Mary's,Sorrento,withitsaccommodationfortenFathers,willbecomeonce moreaspiritualpower-houseformissionaryendeavours.
St.Joseph'sNovitiate,Geelong.
InOctober,1932,anIndultwasreceivedfromRomeerectingourSorrentohousetothestatusofaNovitiate.Whenadvisedofthis,Dr.Mannixseemedverysurprised;andwhile heagreedtothemoveasanOblate affair,HisGracethoughtamoresuitableplacecouldbefoundforthispurpose.Towardstheendof1932,Father D'Arcy,apriestoftheBallaratDiocese,informedtheOblateSuperiorthat hewoulddonateablockof40acres nearGeelongfortheproposedNovitiate.FatherD'Arcywasempowered todothisaccordingtothetermsof hislatebrother'swill,ofwhichhewas executor.
WhenFatherHayesannouncedthis newstohisCommunity,theydidnot sharehisenthusiasm.Theywereof theopinionthatwhereasSorrentowas verysuitableforaNovitiateexperiment,itwasmostunsuitableasa HouseforMissioners.Being60miles fromMelbourne,considerableexpense andtravelwereinvolvedtoandfrom thecity,evenbeforestartingtheir journeystothevariousscenesoflabour.TheFatherswerelookingforwardtoahousenearthecitywithin reasonableaccessoftrainandmotor services.Theacceptanceoftheland nearGeelongandtheerectionofa buildingthere,wouldprejudiceour chancesofanotherhouseintheArchdiocese.Howeveritwasnowtoolate toreasonastheofferwasaccepted.
Thelegaltransferofthe40-acreblock tookaconsiderabletime.Itwasonly inJanuary,1934,thatitwasfinalised. Thenextstepwasthedrawingupof plansfortheproposedNoviceship.The firstofthesewasrejectedbytheProvincialCouncilastooambitious,and modifiedplanshadtobesubmitted. Eventuallyaplanofabuildingtocost about£8,000wasapproved.Workwas begunonJuly5,1934,andinMarch, 1935,theNovitiatehousewasalmost ready.ItwasplacedunderthepatronageofSt.Joseph.FatherIlayes hadalreadybeenappointedNovice Master,hisplaceasSuperiorofSorrentobeingfilledbyFath.1-T.Haugh (March,1935).FatherD'Arcy,owing tohisgenerosity,wasaccordedthe privilegeofsayingthefirstMassinSt. Joseph'sNovitiateonMarch12-inpresenceoftwopostulantswhohadjust arrived.
AsSt.Joseph'sissituated6miles fromGeelong,outintheopenfields, muchdifficultywasmetwithinthe earlystagesinsecuringsupplies.However,inthecourseoftime,theacquisitionofautilitytruckhelpedtosolve theproblem.
St.Joseph'swassingularlyhonoured in1937bythevisitoftheApostolic Delegate,ArchbishopPanics),andinthe sameyear,ofVeryRev.FatherSweeney,O.M.I.,asthepersonalrepresentativeoftheSuperiorGeneral. ThedevelopmentofouryoungAustralianNovitiatehasbeendisappointingfromthepointofviewofnumbers. Applicationshavebeenfew,andof these,notallhavepersevered.Howeverthefirstfruitisbeingreapedthis yearintheOrdinationofRev.J.Carroll,O.M.I.,whoisincidentallythe firstAustralianOblateFather.Another professedscholasticisprogressingfavourably,whiletwoexcellentlay-brothersaredoingtheirpartintheirhumblesphere.Althoughthenumbers arefew,thequalityofthecandidates sofarsuccessfulhasbeenhigh,and thereligiousspiritofSt.Joseph'sisall thatanidealOblatecoulddesire.
Itwouldseemthatweareatagreat disadvantagebynothavingaJunioratetosupplyasteadyflowofsubjects totheNovitiateyearbyyear.Other ReligiousOrdersofmenhaverealised thiswantlongago,andhavemadethe necessaryprovision.
Maywenothopethatwhenweare abletostafffullyourotherAustralian houses,theideaofaJunioratemaybe realised.Isnotthisthespiritofthe Church,tofoster"native"vocations, andbymeansofJuniorSeminaries,to fosterthemfromanearlyage?
Conclusion.
Theforegoingreviewhasonlytoucheduponthesalientfeaturesandevents oftheOblatesinAustralia.InadditiontotheFathersmentioned,some27 othershavelabouredfordifferentperiodswithzealandefficiencyinthis land.Somehavegonetotheirreward; othersarestilllabouringinGreatBrtt:inandIreland-butallareloyally anddevotedlyrememberedbythe staunchAustralianCatholics. DearCornerites,-Theysay"after thestormcomesthecalm,"andthatis atruedescriptionofthisweek.Todayisabeautifulsunnyday,witha cloudlessblueskyandanalmost Springfeelingintheair,whilethepreviousdayshavebeendullandcoldand windy.
Whentheweatheris'wintry,andthe sunisobscuredbehindmassesofdark bankedclouds,andthewindmoans roundthehouses,thenisthetime whenAuntBessyagreesverystrongly withtheanimalsandreptilesthat spendallthewinter-timeasleep.Of course,inWesternAustraliawehaven't manythatdothat(thoughonedoesn't everseeasnakeduringthecold months,doesone?InEurope,when thesnowcoverstheground,thereis reallynothingelsefortheanimalsto -do.Theycouldnotroamroundin thecoldwithoutfoodorshelter,so theyfindacosyhomeandsleeptill theSpringtime.And,Cornerites,I'm afraidthat,ifthewinterinEurope reallyisascoldasallthat,yourAunt Bessywouldbeforcedtolookfora ,,,syhomeinwhichtosleepthewinter.
Butwecannotreallygrumbleabout theweather.Thewetweatheris necessary,andanywayitmakesusappreciatethefipedaysmore.
Andwhenweconsiderit,Lifecanbe comparedto"sunshine"and"shadow." The"shadows"areourlittletrialsand disappointments,and,althoughwe maynotthinksoatthetime,theyare necessarytomakeusappreciatethe "sunshine."

InmanyreligiousCongregationsof womenthetitle"Mother"isgivento allprofessedmembers.Andreally thatisasitshouldbe,forChristexpectsyoutobeafruitfulspouse.He expectsyoutogivebirthtosoulsin eternallife,torearsoulstosat:airy; tocultivateamotherlyHeartwhich Willenableyoutoprotectthosewith comeunderyourinfluencefromtheir worstselves,fromsadnessanddoubt. Howmanysoulsoncedeadinsinowe theirrebirthtotheprayers,thecounselofaholynun!Howmanypeople livinglivesintheworldto-dayowe theirsanctityunderGod,totheinstructionofaholynun!Howmany priestsandreligiousowetheirownvocationtothevirtueimplantedand nurtuedbyaholynun!Howmany denizensofheaventhereare,whoare trulythechildrenofChristandHis Spouses!You,to-day,mydearSister,havebeenespousedtoChrist,and Heexpectsyoutobeamotherinthis verytrueandrealsense.Asthe yearsgoon,yourheart,farfrombeing emptyandvoidoflove,asmany worldlingsimagine,willbefullto overflowingwiththeinterestsofyour DivineSpouse,andwiththesenseof knowingGodandbeingknownby Him,withtheonlytrueknowledge whichislove.ToyouastoallreligiouswomenmaythewordsofHoly Writbeapplied,"ThyMakeristhine husband."

Thismorning,mydearSister,youare filledwithecstatichappiness,butyou mustrememberthattheglamourof professionwillinduetimewearoff. Youmustexpecttomeetwithdifficultiesandset-backs.Itisforthatreasonyouhavebeengiventhecrossthis morning,andthatgrosswillremind youthatyourSpouse,theManofSor-
