ByAlliedBombersWithcommendablepromptnessandsympathy,HisExcellencytheApostolicDelegate(theMostRev.JohnPanico),whenapprisedofthearrivalin AustraliaofthemissionariesrescuedfromtheJapaneseatthetakingofHollandiaonthecoastofDutchNewGuinea,hastenedfromSydneytovisitthem, heartheirstory,andofferthemconsolationandassistance.OnSunday, May21,HisExcellency,accompaniedbyhissecretary,theRev.Dr.Young, theRev.FatherVanBarr,oftheSocietyoftheDivineWord,towhichthe missionariesbelong,andtheRev.FatherA.G.Tynan(Diocesan,Director ofthePropagationoftheFaith),werekindlyreceivedatthecamphospital bytheUnitedStatesofficersincharge.andsoontheywereamongthemissionaries-Priests,NunsandBrothers-listeningtothethrillingstoryoftheir experiences,which,fortunately,weareabletogivethepublic,whoupto thepresenthavehadbutgarbledreportsfrommoreorlessunreliable sources.
HisExcellencyfound23priests,22 Brothers,and18Sisters,togetherwith anumberofyounggirlsandchildren whohadbeenrescued.withthem,all beingkindlycaredforbythedoctorin chargeandtheward.,menandnurses inthehospitalatachedtothecamp. Thepriests.BrothersandSistersallbelongtotheSocietyoftheDivineWord andwereattachedtotheAlexishafen, KariruandWewakMissions.
ThefirstexperienceoftheJapanese wasinMarchoflastyearatKariru which,asyouknow,isanislandabout 14milesdistantfromWewak,and whichwastheheadquartersofthe S.V.D.Missiononthatpartofthe coastofCentralNewGuinea.The Japaneseatfirstassumedafriendlyattitude,butverysoontheybecamesuspiciousofthemissionaries,andon March15,1943,notlongaftertheirarrival,theJapanesetransportedtoan unknowndestinationthewholepersonnelofthemission(39personsinall), includingtheBishop(MostRev.JosephLorks,S.VD.),sixpriests,14Brothersand18Sisters.
TheonlynewsabouttheBishopand themissionariesthathassincebeen obtainedwasgotfromaJapaneseofficerbyFatherJohnGehberger,who,on June14,1943,wastakenfromhismissionatTurubu,nearWewak,and broughtbytheJapanesetothenativevillageofKaip.Ontheevening ofhisarrivalatKaipFatherGehbergerhadaconversationwiththeofficerreferridto(whospokeEnglishfluently)and.obtainedfromhimthein-
formationthattheBishopandthe Karirumissionarieshadbeentakento Rabaul.FatherGehbergerwassubsequentlyremovedfromKaipto Boram,thentoWewakandfinallyto Kariru,wherehefound 11 other FathersandBrotherswhohadbeen broughtthereaftertheremovalofthe Bishopandthepersonnelofthemission.Nativecamelswereusedonthe journeytoWewak,andthefinalstage byboat.
Theaboveinformationwasgiven personallybyFatherGehberger,who isamongthoserescuedfromHollandia. HowtheAlexishafenMissionsSuffered.
WhentheJapanesecametoAlexishafentherewerethereBishopWolf,17 priests,35Brothers,and28Sisters.All thesewith32half-castechildrenwere placedonboardaJapanesefishing barqueandtakentoManamIsland, t3milesfromAlexishafenand91miles fromMadang.Theyweretakenon boardthetwosmallshipsonSaturday, October30,1943,andarrivedatManam IslandonthefollowingMondaymorning.Therewasnoaccommodationfor sleeping,sotheysleptlyingonthe cargo.Theyhadtobringtheirown food.ThefirstshiparrivedatNanam NandonMonday,November1,and thesecondonFriday,November5.On November10furthergroupsofmissionaryBrothersandSistersarrivedfrom Bogia,Ulingan,BanaraandKajan (outpostsoftheAlexishafenmission).
TheFathersandBrotherswereforcedtogrowvegetablesandtoprovide themselveswithfoodwithinfour
shafen,andBrotherSylvester(over70 year'sofage)waskeptinprisonin Alexishafenforsevendayswithoutany apparentreason.

OnJanuary26,1944,camethefatal orderfortheremovalofthesemissionariesfromManamIslandtoanunknowndestination.BishopWolf,foreseeingtheimpendingdangerofbeing bombedatsea,madeaprotesttothe Japaneseauthoritiesagainstsucha course.Fortunatelyacopyofthenow deceaedBishop'sletterofprotesthas beenpreserved.ItisdatedManam Island,January26,1944,andreadsas follows:

HISLORDSHIPMOST WOLF, whodiedasaresultofwoundsreceived whengivinggeneralabsolutiontoa numberofReligiousinJapanesehands.
REV.DR. months.Meanwhile,underthesupervisionoftheJapanese,theyprocured foodfromthenativesinexchangefor smallarticlesoftrade.
Theywerenotallowedtogoamong thenativesortohaveanyconversationwiththem.'FatherKonen,who hadbeenamissionaryatManamIslandandhadbeentakentoBogia,was slappedandkickedbytheJapanesebecausehehadspokentohisownnatives, althoughanofficerhadgivenhimpermissiontodoso.Anotherexampleof ill-treatmentoftheFathersandBrotherswasthecaseofFatherJohn Tschauder.FatherTschauderwas handcuffedandimprisonedforthree daysonsuspicionofbeinganAmerican spy.ThishappenedwhenhewasinternedathisMissionStationonKarkarIsland,inJuly,1943.FatherFrancisHempelmannwastiedup,beaten andthreatenedtobeshot,becausehe wasbelievedtobeanAmerican. FatherWilliamKemmerling,ofMugil MissionStation,wasalsoill-treated. Butworstofallwasthetreatment metedouttoBishopFrancisWolfand hisProcurator,FatherJosephHoersh. BishopWolfwasbeatenatHansaBay androughlytreated.Althoughheprotestedtothemilitarypolice.hegotno redress.FatherHoersch,amanof65 years,waskickedandthreatenedwith arevolver,duetoamisunderstanding andwithoutanypreviousinquiry.In thesamewayFatherWiesenthal,also 65yearsofage,wasill-treatedatAlexi-
1havereceivedyourOrderofRemovalfromManam.Whilethanking youforyourreadinesstocareforour safety,itismydutytodrawyourattentiontothefactthataccordingto thedoctor'sopinionamedicalstatement)75percent.ofourpeopleare sickofmalariaorunder-nourishment, andtheremaining25percent.arenot well.

NowwithhisremarksaboutthefailureofIntermediateLatinIquiteagree. PeoplehavebeendemandingIntermediateLatinforMatriculation,onthe groundsthatitgivesafacilityinEnglish.Asthingsare,itdoesnot.It isawasteoftimeexceptforthosewho goon-todoLatinattheUniversityor inseminaries.ButIdonotadmit thatthisisaClassicaleducation.I holdthatjustbecauseLatinandGreek aretaughtprimarilyasgrammarand notasliterature,wearelosingjust whattheyaremostfittedtogive:a powerof.judgmentandselectionin writing.Thispower,Ibelieve,cannot begotfromthestudyofonelanguage: itcomesfromintensivestudyandnot discursive.Thereisnodoubtthat wehaverecentlyneglectedthesolid thingstoconcentrateontheabstract, thewholetoconcentrateonthepart; andthateventhoughwehavebeen payinglip-servicetothe"practical." Atthesametime,Idonotthink thatallchildrenareableforthisdiscipline.Forthelessable,wemust supplyamorepracticalEnglishcourse, acoursewhoseendisexpressionin speechandwriting.Itisthe"equal educationforall"heresythathas broughttheClassicstotheirpresent lowplace:theleastablesetthestandard.Thatisanotherproblemwe mustbeawareofbutIamnotgoing todiscussithere.Wemustagree, though,thateducationmustbereally intellectual,denyingstronglythatthis meansupintheairandunpractical. Educationmusttrainthewholemanincludingthemostneglectedfaculty forjudgment.Itmustbehumane. Iamnotforamomentdenyingthe educationalvalueofscience;butscienceisonquiteadifferentlevelfrom literature.Thescientist,fromthe verynatureofhiswork,islikelytobecomeeveninhumanunlesshehasbeen thoroughlygroundedinthehumanities:anditissurelynodisrespectto thenaturalsciencestorequirethata manapproachthemwithawelltrainedmind.Itisalltooeasytobecarriedawaybybrutefactsorbythe abstractionsofthemathematicalscientist.Pragmatismismostdangeroub;for-asweseeclearlyenough-all thingstothepragmaticalbecomejust

FirstofMr.Medley'sfourrequirements-notfirstinimportance,but necessaryimmediately-is"qualitycontrol,"Idonotknowjustwhatthis means-indeedhehi.nselfusesthe termforwantofabetter.Butit seemstoimplyexaminationstodetermineentrancetotheprofessions(good; wehavethatalready:perhapsthe standardcouldprofitablyberaised), governmentassistance(a/so,Isuppose. good),anddirection:sothattalent willbeusedtothebestadvantageof theState.Thislastisdangerous. Avastamountofingenuityhasbeen expendedonthetaskofidentifyingthe adversarydescribedintheNewTestamentasAntichrist.Ingeneral,those engagedinthisfascinatingpursuit havebeenmoreconcernedwithconfirmingtheirownprejudicesthanwith arrivingatthetruth.Textsaremanipulated,historydistorted,andlogic abifsedinordertoprovethattheterm appliestotheindividual,movement, or,itmaybe,churchofwhichthestudentmostdisapproves.
OurLorddeclaredthatmany"false ('hrists"wouldarise,buttheseimpostors,itseems,wouldhaveonething incommon:theywouldbeable-ifthat werepossible,-todeceiveeventhe elect.Thename"Antichrist"suggests thesamething.AfalseChristmaybe expectedtohavecertainoutwardresemblancestothetrueChrist.We arenottolookforamonsterwhose evilcharacterisobvious,butforone whomightbedescribedasacaricature ofChrist.Itisbythissuperficial likenessthatheisabletoimposeon theunwary.
Asurveyofhistorywouldshowhow accurateisthisdescription.Again andagain,ifwemakethissurvey,we shallfindhonestmenandwomendeludedbyprophetswhoseobjectissaid tobethatofreformingtheChurch. BeingmadeattimeswhentheChurch neededpurifying,thisappealhaswon thesupportofthosewhoweregenuinelyscandalisedbythecorruption.
Itisnotthefashionto-daytoexploitthisparticularsentiment.That gamehasbeenplayedout.Inthesixteenthcenturyitprovedaneffective meansofunderminingCatholicloyalty.
Itwasthenpossibletoinducelarge numbersofpeopletoconsenttopoliciestheultimateobjectofwhichwas todethronepapalauthority.because suchpolicieswererecommendedbythe toneofmoralindignationwithecclesiasticalabusesinwhichtheywere stated.Thereformers,however,were soonobligedtothrowofftheirdisguise andtocomeoutboldlyasseparatists. Sincethentheattackhastakenadifferentform.ThemodernAntichrist posesasahumanitarian.

OurLordHimselfispicturedasthe leaderofaphilanthropicandsocial movementratherthanastheDivine HeadofasupernaturalKingdom.Life onearth,insteadofbeingregardedas apilgrimage,thegoalofwhichlies beyondthisworld'shorizons,istreated asthoughitwereallthatmattered, andthisviewisevenascribedto Christ,asthoughtheChurch'spreoccu-
anti-social.Our"other-worldliness"is saidtoobstructsocialprogress.Humanitarianismlearnstoseeinusthe championsofignoranceandtyranny.
Thecriticismmostinfashionisthat Catholicsintheirpreoccupationwith Godneglectorobstructmovementsfor thebettermentofhumanconditions. ThatistheformofthemodernAntichrist.

Infact,itisplainlysaidthatthe Churchhasdistortedthereligionof Jesus,andthatChristianityinitsoriginalformconsistedinnothingelse butthathumanitariancreedwhichis to-daysopopular.Itisundercover ofthatfalseinterpretationthattheattackontheChurch,inEnglish-speakingcountries,isbeingconducted.A movementwhichowesitsinspirationto ChristianityisusedasaweaponwherewithtoattacktheFaith.HumanitarianChristianityisrepresentedasa rivaltoCatholicChristianity;thepart issetinantagonismtothewhole,It iseasytoseehowthiscameabout.
Inthefirstplace,thechallengeof theChurchcouldnotbeignored.It wasallverywelltointerpretChristianityinthetermsofsocialidealism,but thatmeantcomingatonceintoconflictwiththehistoricinstitutionwhich centredtheChristianlifearoundthe offeringoftheHolySacrificeThe logicofthe'situationhadtobeaccepted.IftheessenceofChristianitylay inthesocialserviceitinspired,then theChurchwithitsinsistenceontheologicaldogmaandsacramentis wrongandmustbedrivenoffthefield.
Thisistheattitudeofalargenumber whoseantagonismtoCatholicismmay notheveryarticulatebutwhohave aSecretantipathytoasupernatural Church,fortheyseethatitaffordsso strongacontrasttotheirownimpoverishedview.Andtheyknowthatit willneversurrenderoneiotaofits Faith.Compromisewithitisimpossible,thereforeitmustbewar.

Letusbeginbyacknowledgingwhatevertruththeremaybeintheaccusation!Inhisworkon"EconomicEffectsoftheReformation,"Doctor GeorgeO'Brienwrote:"AftertheReformationagreatpartoftheenergy whichtheCatholicChurcchhaddevotedintheMiddleAgestothedevelopmentofphilosophyandart,andtothe propagationoftheFaithamongpagans, hadtobedirectedtoprotectingitself againstthenewenemiesatitsgate.

Butthetacticsofthepersecuted minorityarejustifiable.Inastorm itmaybenecessarytothrowthecargo overboardtosavetheshipandthe crew.TheChurchastheguardianof thatRevelationwhichisthebasisof allrightlivingismoreimportantthan anyprogrammeofsocialreformorinternationalfederation.Ifthedogma oftheIncarnationislcist,thenlostis thatwhichgivesourfellowmanhis sacredness.IftheHolySacrificeceases tobeofferedandtheprayersofthe faithfulnolonerarisetoheaven,then welosethatAllythrouhwhomalone theKingdomofJusticecancome amongus.IftheauthoritythatpromulgatestheDivineLawofrighteousnessbedenied,itisuselesstohope thathumanlaws,pacts,andtreaties willbeobserved.Thesethingsconstitutethekeystoneofcivilisation.Withoutthemthewholearchfallsin,and thereisnothingbutchaos.They mustbedefendedatallcosts Butthereisadangerhere.Itis thedangerofbeingdrivenintoare-

Norcanwebecontentwithphilanthropiceffortonaprivatescale.Christianityhasasocialmission.TheEncyclicalfromwhichIhavejustquoted isanindicationthattheChurchisinterestedinjustgovernment,inquestionsrelatedtotheconductofcommerceandindustry,andinthevaried problemspresentedbyfinance,war, andajustpeace.We,too,havea programme-onethisisbasedonthe immutablelawsofGod.
Eventhoughweshouldbedriven intoapositionsimilartothatofthe ChurchatthetimeoftheReformation, therewouldhenojustificationforabdicatingthethroneofthisworld.The factthatwesubordinatemantoGod, thephysicalto:hespiritual,andthis lifetothatwhichistocome,isthe veryconditionrequiredforestablishing aChristiancivilia.tioninwhichrighteousnesswouldgovernallhumanactvities.WhentheRomanEmpire brokeup,civilisationandculturewere savedbythoseholymenwho,retreatingfromwhatappearedtobeadoomedworld,gavethemselvestoprayer andthepreachingoftheGospel, Itwastheexample-andteachingof St.Benedict'smonkswhichformedthe nucleusofthatnewworldthatroseon theruinsoftheEmpire.Itwasthose contemplatives,workingintheirfields, buildingroads,fellingforests,draining marshes,writingbooks.healingthe sick,whobroughtorderoutofchaos. Bytheirsenseofauthorityanddiscipline,bytheirdetachmentand selflessness,bytheirasceticsimplicity wherebyprideandavaricewererebuked,theyoungnationsofthattime weretaughtlessonsthefruitofwhich wasseenintheMiddleAges.Infact, theprinciplesofthatgreatcivilisation weregivenusbyaChurchthatseemedimpotent.
Viewingthedebacleofaworld saddledwithawarhumanitarianism waspowerlesstoprevent,yetnotin amoodofdefeatismandreaction,but withhighcourage,letusmeetthe claimsofAntichristandshowthathumanitarianism,ifitistofulfilitsown ideals,mustbuildonfoundationsthat areChristianandCatholic!Onceand forallletitbeknownthat,farfrom thefalseChristsofthisAgeeclipsing theChristofGod,whatplausibility theymaypossessandwhatattractivenesstheymayexerciseareclueentirely tothefactthattheyhaveborrowed thewisdomandimitatedthemethods oftheLordwhoseChurchtheymalign.

Representingitselfthenasamagazinealliedtonodistinctiveinterest, butexistingsolelyforthebenefitof all,ithascreatedforitselfanaura ofimpartialityintheserviceofman. Thislargehumanitarianaspecthas beenenhancedbyitsboastsaboutits giftsofscholarships,etc.,especiallyto LatinAmerica.Allthiscanbetothe good,buttomustcomeasasurprise tomanytofindthattheReader'sDigesthasapolicythatisdirected againstthefreedomofthePress.

Thearticlesandreleasesfromthese bureauxareviewedsuspiciouslyby pressmen,forsuchofficialhand-outs(as theyarecalled)arewrittenwithabias directedtoenhancetheprestigeofthe powersthatbe"andintotalitarian countriestheonlynewstopassthecensorsisthe"hand-out"dutifullycabled byapressmanwhorepresentsafree Pressinhisowncountryandasregards newsobtainedinforeignlandsisexpectedtodependuponhisowninvestigationsintofactsandlegitimatedeductions.
Therefusaltoaccept"officialhandouts"hasledtocorrespondentsfindingthemselvesplacedundersurveillance,losingcablerightsand,unless theytoetheline,havingtheirpassportsrevoked.Noonecouldsaythat thecontinuedtolerationofsuchbureauxandtheir"viewswiththeofficial slant"wouldbeinthebestinterests ofafreePress,andyet,thoughinjust adifferentway,theReaders'Digestis operatingtothesamepurpose.
Whenitbeganitsoughtpermission ofreputablemagazinesandpapersfor rightsofprecisandre-publication.The
longandvariedlistofpublications helpedtoheightentheimpressionofimpartiality,thoughthetypeofarticles selectedoveralongperioddisclosesa verydefinite"slant!'
"PayForPrivilegeofQuotation."
Somepublisherswerehesitantabout grantingrightsofpublication,forthey knewthevalueofexclusiverights. However,theyfoundthatcirculations improvedandsoonmanymagazines werewelcomingtheDigest'sattentions. TheDigestwasnotslowtocapitalise upontheuniquepositioninwhichit founditselfandit'soonhaditsown corpsofwriterswhoweresendingarticleswiththeDigest"slant"tomagazinesandpapers,andwhichaccepted themfortheprivilegeofseeingthemselvesadvertisedintheDigestandthus receivingtheDigest'sendorsementof being"impartial,informative,up-todateandabreastofpublicopinion."
Butsomeofthesemagazinesarenow realisingthatthisadvertisingcan operateinthesamewayastheDictatorships'PressBureaux-accepttheir lineorquit-inthecaseoftheDigeSt, receiveitspolicyarticlesandinreturn theDigest'sofficialapprobation,orelse berelegatedtotheclassofjournals thatarenotfitforenlightenedpublic opinion.
TheposeadoptedbytheReader's Digestisnowseenthrough..andhas beendenouncedbytheNewYorker. Actuallythereisnothingexclusivein thepractice,andmanyotherDigest magazineshavenotbeenslowtofollow suit-someinevenamorebrazenway. "Payfortheprivilegeofquotation"is aformofjournalisticblackmailmade themoredangerousbythelog-rolling, toadyingtacticsemployedbyauthors, advertisersandpoliticians.Theresults mayvaryindegree,buttheyareall doingonething,namely,stiflingthe freedomofthePress.

Itisgood,however,toknowthat thedangerisbeingrealised,for,asreportedintheAssociatedPressofFeb-
ruary12,atleastonejournal,the"New Yorker,"whichhasbeenfreely"digested,"hasendeditsreprintagreement withtheReader'sDigest.
Thatagreementmeantmuchtoboth parties,forReader'sDigestusedto drawheavilyonthe"NewYorker"for cartoons,fillers,articlesandshortstories.Infact,withoutwishingexactly torecommendit,wemaysaythat manybelievethat,fromtheliterary andcriticalpointofview,the"New Yorker"standswiththebest.Itis, editorially,oneofthemostindependentpapersintheUnitedStates.Certainitis,also,thatthe"NewYorker" holdsnobrieffortheopinionsofthe CatholicPress.Andyetthismagazineobjectedtothe"Digest'sindirect creativefunction,"whichtheyconsidered"athreattothefreeflowofideas andtotheindependentspirit."
Toquotethe"NewYorker":"The Digeststartedoutasareprintmagazine,butgrewintosomethingquite different.Nowadays,alargeproportionofitscontentsisfranklyoriginal withtheDigest,andnotpresentedas reprintmaterial;andofthestuffthat ispresentedasreprintmaterialmuch actuallyoriginatesintheofficeofthe Digest,andthengetsfarmedoutto someothermagazineforfirstpublication."

FreedomandLibertyare,ofcourse, thetwomostusedand,inaway,least understoodwordsofthepresenttime. TheideaofFreedomstirsmentoheroinn,inpeaceaswellaswar-butthe worditselfisoftenskilfullybandiedto cloakratherinsidiouspropaganda,both politicalandreligious,andinpractice 'wemayseeforourselvesto-dayhow ithasevenbeenmad-0-- of deludednations,sacrificingtheirflesh andbloodtothes,odofatotalitarian state.Yetwhenyoucometoaskthe man-in-the-streetpreciselywhathe weansbyFreedom,itissurprisingjust whatconfusionthereisinthepopular mindonthesubject.
By"freedom,"ofcourse,wedoNOT meantherighttodoandsayanything weplease...eveninpeacetime.The merefactthatwehaveapoliceforce meansthatinafreecountrythepeople donotinterprettheirfreedomtomean therighttodoorsayjus.whateverwe please.Freedom,then,needsdefiningandwedefineitasthepowertoact withouthindrance,andwithoutinjury tothejustrightsofothers.Thisisa
pointquitealotofpeopledon'tsee. tograsp-thattruefreedomisrestrict edorlimitedbythejustrightsof others,firstofGod,thenofourneigh bour.
Forexample,wesaythatwer free tospendourownhard-earnedwages, andsoweare,butwearenotfreeto spendthemrecklesslyandinsuchaway astoleaveawifeandchildrenunfed andill-clothedasaconsequence.So, freedomisrestrainedbyourdutyto respectthejustrightsofotheesanythingelseislicense.And,sirangeas it-mayseem,inademoc'atitcountry, theveryexistenceofapoliceforceis aguaranteeoffreedom--itisaguaranteethateveryiadivid-i.1willrespect therightsofhisfelloweitisers,cfthe State,andofGodHimself.Theidea, then,o'freedomimpliessomekindof restrictionsomewhere-andwhenyou sometothinkofit,thatistrus,isr'tit!
Now,sometimespeopleso,akloosely about"freedomoflhought';and,generally,bythattheyneanhaosof thought.Wealenotatlibertyto CHINIswhatwelike.:nymorethan weareatlibertytoDOwhatwelike. Inanidealsociety,then,allmen wouldbefreetoworshipGod,butthey wouldnotbefreetoworshipGodexceptinthetruereligion.Therewould befreedomtopropagatethetruth,but errorwouldbebarredjustaserroris debarredfromtheschoolsofscience. Unfortunatelythisidealsocietydoes notexistanywhere.Alreadyerrorhas beenpropagatedwidely.Menhave grownoldinreligiouserror-theyhave beeneducatedtobelievethattheone truereligionisun-Scripturalandreekiugwithsuperstition.Theyarenotto blameforthemostpart;theyarecompletelysatisfiedthatCatholicismis false.Andso,justasamanmight disagreeentirelywiththepoliticsofa friend,yetnotinterferewithhim,and remainontermsoffriendshipwith him,sowe,too,disagreeentirelywith thereligiousbeliefsofnon-Catholics,yet wishtoremainontermsoffriendship withthem,andnottointerferewith theirreligiousbeliefs-asamatterof fact,asIhaveoftensaid,werespect thesincerityofothersintheirbeliefs, eventhoughconvincedthatCatholic. ismaloneisthetruth.Heavensabove, wecouldn'texpectotherstohaveany regardforusifwedidnthonestlybelieveCatholicismwasthetruth.

Itinculcatesthevirtueofjusticetowardsmen.
Andwhatdoesjusticemean?Simplyyieldingtoanotherwhatofright ishisawn.ToGod,theSupreme Ownerofallthings,everythingisdue. Thus,justicetoGodhasthewider range.Man'srights,ontheother hand,arelimited,andonbothsidesnamely,bytherightsofGodoverhim, andbytherightsofhisfellow-man.In thepresentCommandmentwearedealingdirectlywiththerightsofmenin relationtoeachother.
Sowearetakingjusticeinitsnarrowedandmoreordinarysenseofjust dealingbetweenmanandmaninthe matterofearthlygoodsandpossessions,orofrightsconnectedwiththese.

Thisisapointtobeborneinmind bytrustees(formoneyorotherpropertyI-servants,chargedwiththe managementofdomesticstores,orthe careofwardrobes-shophandsorfactoryhands,whohavemanyopportunitiesofmisusingthepropertyoftheir employers.Schoolgirlsandschool boysmaysinbywilfulinjurytopropertybelongingtotheirschool.They havetheusebutnottheabuseoffurniture,books,windows,etc.,conceded tothem.Hereitshouldbeoncemore borneinmindthatthewealthorpovertyoftheemployerhasnothingtodo withthecase,andtherestitutionmust bemadeforinjurydone.
Tocomenowtothedutyofrestoringill-gottengoods,animportant point,sincenoonecanreceiveforgivenessfromGodforinjusticedoneunless hebesincerelyresolvedtomakerestitution.Itisanindispensableelementintruerepentance.Moreover, thisobligationneverexpiresbymere lengthoftime.Othercircumstances mayarisemodifyingtheduty.With regardtothepaymentofdebt-e.g., thoseduetothetradeforgoodssupplied-thelawofthelandoftensteps inandfixesadefinitenumberofyears, withinwhichthedebtmustbeclaimed, orelsetherightofthecreditorexpires. (ContinuedfromFrontCover.) intwogroupsforHansaBay,nearthe Missionof'Bogia.
OnFebruary3thetwogroupsunited atHansaBay,andonthe5th.ofthe' samemonththeyleftonboardtheDmichmoro,aJapaneseshipof800tons,for Hollandia.ThereweremanyJapaneseonboard.Abouthalfanhour aftermidnightonthefirstdaythe shipwasattackedbyanAllied'plane whichdroppedfourbombswhichmissedtheship.OnthermorningofFebruary6about8o'clockafurtherattackwasmade,thistimeby15bombers,butwithouteffect.Thebombers thenflewlowandstrafedtheshipwith machineguns.Thefiringwascontinuedforaconsiderabletimeand,there beingpracticallynoshelterforthepassengers,dreadfulcarnagewastheresult.BishopWolfwasshotunderthe shoulder,thebulletpenetratinghis lung.Sevenpriests,16Brothers,36 Sisters,sixLutheranmissionariesand sevenhalf-casteswereeitherkilledoutrightorsubsequentlydied.Bishop Wolflingeredforthreeweeks.Most ofthemissionarieswhowerenotkilled werewounded.Twenty-sixJapanese officerswerekilled.ItwaswhenBishopWolfwasstandinguptogivea generalabsolutionthathewasfatally wounded.
Thedeadandwoundedwerefirst broughttoWewak,wherethedead wereburied.BishopWolf,whowas stillliving,protestedagainstthewoundedbeingbroughttoHollandiaashe thoughttheycouldgetbetterattentionatWewak.TheJapanese,however,insistedontheirbeingtakento Hollandia,wheretheyarrivedonFebruary8,1944.

ThelandingoftheAmericanMarines andthe6th.ArmyinHollandiaon April22,1944,wasacompletesurprise totheJapanese,whoscatteredlike wildcattleinanendeavourtosave themselves.Theytriedtotakethe missionarieswiththem,buttheroads werepracticallyimpassableandthe missionariescouldneverkeepupwith thefleeingsoldierswho,intheirhaste, andintheirdesiretosavethemselves, wereconstrainedtoleavethembehind. HadtheJapanesenotbeencompelled tobeatsohastyaretreat,itismore thanlikelytheywouldhaveputthe missionariestodeathtopreventtheir givinginformationtotheAmericans. Themissionarieshadbeenkeptinthe nativevillageofGoya.Fromthere whentheJapanesehadleft,Father HaganandtwootherAmericanmisisonarieswentdowntotheseashoretomeet andwelcometheirdeliverers.The officersoftheinvadingforceonhearinghowthemissionarieswereSituated, sent200soldierstotakethemfrom GoyatothebeachandthencetoPan Hill,wheretheyweregivenmedical aidforthreedaysbeforebeingtaken onlandingboatstoFinschafen.
Theconditionofthemissionaries maybejudgedbythefactthat33had tobetakenaboardonlitters.They spentsomedaysatFinschafenand thenceweretransportedviaMilneBay onaUnitedStatesshiptoAustralia. Afewcasesweresobadthatthey wereunabletotravelandhadtobeleft atHollandiaandFinschafen.Ofthe woundedbroughtfromWewaktoHollandiabytheJapaneseonehaddied ontheship,andtheBishop,sevenSistersandtwoBrothersdiedlaterat Hollandia.Allwereburiedonthe beachthere.'Laterstillsixdiedon GoyaandoneBrotherdiedinthejunglewherehewaslost.

Twomissionarieswerekilledbythe JapaneseatButstationonFebruary
25,1943.TwoFathers(OttoMayand WilliamReif)werenotremovedwith theothersfromKariru,butwereheld thereuntilNovember8,1943,asFather MaywassecretarytoBishopLorks andtheybelievedtheycouldgetsome informationoutofhim.Theysubjectedthesepriest'stothethirddegree.Thefateofthesetwopriestsis unknown.
SeveralofthemissionariesandSistersstillcarrythemarksofthebulletswhichtheywerewounded.The worstcasewesawattheCampHospitalwasthatofFatherLawrenceMay, whoselegwasfracturedbyabullet fromtheaeroplaneandhadtobeamputatedonboardtheJapaneseship. Dr.Braun,oftheLutheranMission, havingnosurgicalinstruments,was obligedtoamputatethelegwithacommonsaw.FatherMaywasstillin bedwhenseenattheCampHospital, buthewasquitecheerful.
AsthemissionariesandSistersmust bedetainedattheCampHospitalfor atleasttwoorthreeweeksbefore theyarestrongenoughtoundertake anyduties,theyhavebeensupplied withvestments,missals,andaltar stones,sothatthepriestswillbeable tocelebratedailyMass.
