"Althoughwediffergreatlyfromthe RomanCatholicsinmanyfundamental emphases,theyhavesomespecialas tivitiesandattitudeswhichcanbeappreciatedbyProtestants.

"Ilikethewaytheyholdhighthe CrossofChrist.Letitbeadmitted thatthey,astheReformersaffirmed, havemadesomewhatofafetishorthe Cross,andthattheyhaveoverdone thesymbolicintheirfrequentkneeling beforetheCrucifix.Nevertheless,the RomanChurchhasunfailinglyandunerringlyemphasisedfirst,lastandalwaysthedeathofChristassomething vitalandoftranscendentimportance inthelifeofeveryman.

"HealingshrinesatLourdesand Saint-Ann-de-Beaupregivenoshockto theCatholic.Wethinkheismistakenintheseevaluations,andwearenot surethatanyofhismiraclesaremiraclesatall,butwealsothinkthathe hasaprofoundtruthinhisconviction thattheGodWhomweallworshipis aGodWhoisabovespaceandtime andabletodofarmorethanwecan everaskorthink.

faithinChrist.Perhapssomeofthem havethatattitude,butasourown ArticlesofReligionputit,'goodworks arepleasingandacceptabletoGodin Christ.'Certainly,whenitcomesto organisedcharity,toanarmyofmen andwomenwhogivethemselvestodo gooddeedsintheworld,theCatholic Churchcanclaimatremendousaccomplishment. "Ofcourse,besure,theworksofCatholicismhavenotalwaysbeenas naivelygoodastheyappear.They can,andhaveusedtheir purposesofpropaganda,theirorphanagesandmissionsforthesameend'. SomeoftheirHierarchyincommand ofthevast,far-sungnetworkofcharitableorganisationsandvarious'Orders'withintheChurch,hasattimes usedthispowerfulmachineryforends whichwerenotasperfectasmight hesupposed.But,withallthat,the

SistersofMercywhowalkthestreets torescuethehelpless,thevasthospitalsbuilttogivehealingtothepeople, theorphanages,therescuehomes,the schoolsandcolleges,thehostels,indaisgerousregions-allthesethingsspeak ofapracticalandmilitantChristianity.

"Showmethyfaithwithoutthy works,andIwillshowtheemyfaith bymyworks.'SoSt.Jamesadmonishedthosewhohadmissedthetrue natureofChristianfaith.Sothe world doesnot tiantheologydoesunderstandthedogs ofSaintBernardsearchinginthesnow forthelosttraveller,anddoesunderstandthelayworkersofSt.Vincentde Paul,'whoseonlycloisteristhecity streets;whoseonlymonasterythe hovelsofthepoor.'Fromallthiswe canlearn-andshould."-"IrishWeekly."

Manypeopleareperplexedbythe contemplationofwhatishappening,or ratherwhatisnothappening,inthe Balkancountries.ItwasknownbeforethefallofMussolinithattheAxis occupyingforcesweremainlyItalian. SincethenthefurtherfacthasemergedthatnotonlyhavetheItalianoccupyingforcescollapsedasaninstrumentoftheAxis,buthavereappeared inanewguiseasananti-Axisinstrument,asanallyoftheoccupiedcountriesthemselvesagainstthecommon oppressor,Germany.

Why,then,hasnoBalkancountry beenabletofollowItaly'sexampleby openlydefyingGermanyandbymak-

inganopenbidfortheliberationof their.country?

Itistruethatnewtisbroadcast dailyabouttheincieasedactivityof theJugoslav"partisans,"aboutincreasedsabotageinotherBalkancountries,andinparticularaboutHungary'sstifferfronttotheGermans.But thepuzzlingthingtomanyobservers istheapparenteasewithwhichthe fewGermantroopshavecontinuedto holddownthosecountries,despitethe strainuponGermanresourcesbothon theRussianandtheItalianfronts.

Manypeoplefeelintheirbonesthat theremustbesomeexplanationofthis circumstancewhichisnotgivenitsdue

prominencethroughthechannelsofAlliedinformation.

TheCallofHungary.

ThemoststrikingcaseisthatofHungary.Therewereinformedpeople whoexpectedthatItaly'sdefection fromtheAxiscampwouldbepromptly followedbyanHungariandefection.It hasnothappened,despiteanimpressivebodyofevidenceaboutHungarianantipathytotheGermans.Hungarywasnotonlythemostpowerful ofGermany'sSouth-Easternsatellites, shewasthemostimmediatelyaffected byItaly'saction,foritwastotheItalianendoftheAxisshewasattached. Moreoveritisto-daydoubtfulifHungaryisapartytotheThree-Power Pact.TheGermannewsagency, Transocean,hasitselfsuggestedthe possibilityofanopenHungarianrupturewithGermany.

Theanti-Naziorgansofopinionin Hungaryaregivenfullfreedomofexpression.Ontheotherhand,nopublicabuseofPadoglioispermittedin theHungarianpress.Information fromAlliedsourcesisnotonlyallowed,butisgivenprominenceinthat press.Hungaryhasrefused-andhas beenablewithimpunitytorefuse-t3 sendanyofhertroopseithertothe RussianfrontortootherBalkancoin triesforpoliceduties.Foralong timetheHungarianGovernmentrefusedtheGermandemandthatit shouldrecognisethenewpuppetGovernmentsetup*byMussoliniasa"republicanfascist"government,though intheendtherecognitionwasgiven.

NonethelessHungaryhasmaintaineddiplomaticrelationswiththe VictorEmmanuel-BadoglioGovernment,andto-daymaintainsaMinister attheCourtofSavoy.YetHungary isstillnominallyintheGerinancamp. SheparadoxicallydisplaysopenanimositytotheGermans,yettechnically continuestobeanallyofGermany? Why?

RoumaniaandBulgaria.

SimilarlyinRoumaniatheGerman powerisdetested,andeveryRoumanianwantstoescapefromthewar.Yet, theRoumanianGovernmenthashadto agreetoitstroopsbeingsenttofight forGermanyintheCrimeaandinthe Kuban.IthasalsoagreedtotheGermanddemandthattheexportsformerlysenttoItalybenowsenttoGermany.Why?

InBulgaria,anti-Germanmanifestations(includingthedroppingoftwo prominentpro-NazisfromtheCabinet)havebeencombinedwithpro-Russianfeeling;andtheQueenisthe daughterofVictorEmmanuel.Yet, BulgariaremainstechnicallyaGerman allyandrecognisesMussolini'snew government.Why?

Greece,JugcislaviaandAlbania,despiteopposition,arestillunderGermany'sthumb.EventheGerman pressnolongerattemptstoconcealthe factthateveryBalkancountryisantiGermanandwantstoescapeGerman control.

AnExplanation.

Oneexplanationoftheparadoxis thattheGermanorganisationisstill strongenoughandcleverenough,despitenumericalinadequacy,tohold downunwilling"alliet,"andisstill abletoplayoffoneunhappyBalkan countryagainstanother:butthechief explanationistobefoundintheGermanexploitationofthebogeyofCommunism.

Germanpropagandaharpsonthe factthattheonlysafeguardforthe BalkansagainstCommunistdominationliesintheGermanarmedforces. ThatpropagandamakesuseofGermany'sverydefeatsontheRussian fronttoparadethemoreterrifyingly thebogeyofanadvancingCommunist armyofdomination.

Thetruthseemstobethatmuchof astheBalkancountrieshateNazism, theyequallyhateCommunism.They aretrappedbetweentwofears,andthe resultanthesitationandbewilderment givetothecynicalGermansacongenialopportunityofbenefitingthereby.Noman,however,canprophesy howlongGermanywillbeabletobolsterupherownnefariousdomination bymerelyparadingarivalbogey."CatholicTimes."

Thaumaturgy

Therearelearnedmenwhokickoff fromthegratuitoustheorythatmiraclesdonothappen,becausetheycannot.Theireruditionisdisplayedby theingenuitywithwhichtheyexplain awaythemiraculous.itisdisplayedno lessbytheskillwithwhichtheyknock downtheflimsytheoriesoftheirpredecessorsbeforetheybegintoconstructtheirownequallyfoundationlessstructure.Inconsequencethe Churchneednotbothertorefutethese mentalextravaganzas.shecansafely leavethattasktothenextgeneration ofsceptics.

Theproperattitudetoadoptwith regardtomiraclesisbestsummedup intheAsquithianadviceof"waitand see."Itisunscientificandjustsheer pridetobeginbydenying;itishumilityandtruthtoconfessone'sreadinesstolearn.

Nowamiracleisadefiniteconcrete event.Ittakesplaceinacertain placeandatacertaintime.Itcannotberepeated.Theremightindeed beanothermiraclelikeuntothefirst, butthefirstitselfhasgonewiththe timeinwhichittookplace.Howthen canthosewhoarenoteye-witnesses knowwhetherornotamiraclehasoccurred?Theanswerissimple.Aswe knowabouteventsinEuropefromthe testimonyofmenwhomwejudgeto beworthyofbelief,soalsowemust cometoknowofmiraclesfromtheevidencegivenbytrttstworthywitnesses.

Ofsuchstockareourfourevangelists.Theyrelatethetestimonyofthe Apostleswhothemselvesaccordingto thepetrinedefinitionwerewitnessesof allthatJesushaddonefromhisbaptismbyJohntohisresurrection.Now ifevermenmeritedbeliefitwasthe ApostolicCollege.Itsmemberswere honestandsinceretothepointof beingreadytodiefortheirconvictions.Incourseoftimeallwereto doso.

Fromthemoralpointofview theirworthisunimpeachable.

Norwerethey,astheincredulous learnedwouldhaveusbelieve,victims ofhallucination.TheApostleswere indeedignorantofthenicetiesofculture,buttheyhadcommonsense enoughtoknowthatnohumanpower canhealthesickinaninstant,norfeed fivethousandwithfiveloaves,nor walkontheseawithoutsinking.

TheApostlesnarratethefacts.Incredulousastheyseemtobe,theyare vetnotincredible.Truthwouldcompelanymindtoadmitthemiraculous, didnotoftenenoughaproudwillintervenetopreventitsacceptanceand consequentbeliefinJesusChrist,the SonofGod.

Forthepurposeofamiracleisnot merephilanthropy,butitisasign post.Andtothosewhocanread,it saysclearlyenough:themiracle-workerisfromGod:whathesaysisthe truth:believehimunderpainofoffendingGodHimself.

ChristworkedmiraclesasaguaranteeofHisGod-givenmission.The connexionbetweenHismiraclesand workissoevident,thatadenialof Christnecessarilypostulatesadenial ofthemiraculous.Buttomenof goodwillthesesignsJesusdidthat theymightbelievethatJesusisthe Christ,theSonofGod,andthatbelievingtheymayhavelifeinHisname.

Inordertosatisfythenumerous inquirieswhichhavebeenreceivedat theNewNorciaAbbeyinconnection withthedamagesustainedbytheDrysdaleRiverMission,situatedinthe NorthofWesternAustralia,inthe dreadfulraidoftheJapaneseonSeptember27last,wegivebelowan abridgmentofthereportsentbyRev. RosendoSosa,O.S.B.,whoisincharge oftheMissionsinceFatherThomas waskilledintheraid,tohisSuperior theLordAbbotofNewNorcia.

OnSeptember27,1943,theMission washeavilyandmercilesslybombed bytheJapanese,whopracticallydestroyedtheMission,afterhavingkilleditsSuperior,theRev.Father ThomasGil,O.S.B.,andfivenativechildrenwhoweretakingshelterwithhim inthesametrench,whichwasdirectly hitbyahighexplosivebomb.Providentiallyatabout9.30a.m.,whenthe raidtookplace,therewerenotmany nativesintheMissiongrounds,for about80ofthem,menandwomen, werewiththeRev.FatherCubero workingonafieldaiewmilesaway fromtheMission,andotherswerefishingandhunting.Thiscircumstance savedmanylives,forhadtheybeen attheMissionatthemomentofthe raid.mostcertainlyagoodfewof themwouldhavealsobeenkilled. Allagriculturalimplements,harnesses,etc.,destroyedandburnt.

Partoftheluggerauxiliaryengine 'destroyed.

Waterscheme:Amainpipingdisconnectedinthreeplaces;alltanks perforated,exceptasmallone.

IntheNativeCamp:9cottagesfor nativefamiliesbadlydamagedandone fullydestroyed.

AfterthetragedywhentheMissionariessawthattheywereunableto maintainallnativesonthescantyprovisionsleft,andwithoutimplementsto tillthesoilonwhosecultivationdependstoagreatextentthesupportof theMission,theirfirstthoughtswere todismissthenatives.sendingthem backtothebush,andsotheydid.But afterafewdaystheMissionaries'hearts couldnotbearanylongertoseethe poornatives,alreadyusedtothecivilisedcustomsoftheMission,roaming aboutinthebushinsearchofsomethingtoeat,andsotheyrecalledthem totheMission,trustinginGod'sProvidence,whichinsomewayorother willprovideforthemall.

Perhapssomepeopleinterestedin theMissions'affairswouldliketoknow theplansforthefutureinregardto theDrysdaleRiverMissionwhilethe warcontinues.TosatisfythislaudabledesireFatherRosendo'swords

inhisreportwillsuitablystrve. spiteofthissadeventandourawkwardposition,theMissionwillcontinueasanentity.Thenativesare scared,yes,butstilltheyremainround us,andweshallneverabandonttern, thoughweforeseethedemandforstill greatersacrificesorfourpart,onNew Norcia,andonourfriends.Todo otherwisewouldmeantothrowaway allthespiritualfruitstheMissionhas securedwithsomuchpainandhardshipsduringthe35yearsofitsexistence,andtomarutterlytheseedof civilisationspreadamongthenatives. No,weshallsticktoourdutieswhateverpainfulvicissitudesmayhappento us.Tothiseffectweshallerect(they havestarted)somemostessential buildingsonanothersiteafewmiles apartfromtheMission,andtherewe shallcontinueourcharitableworkfor thesakeofthenativesuntilthewaris over,oruntiltheJapshavenotthe remotestchanceofflyingoverthe Mission."

FortunatelytheSisters,whoforsome yearshavebeenworkingattheDrysdaleRiverMission,asaprudentmeasureinviewofthedangers,hadbeen

recalledtotheirConventatNewNorciasometimebeforethedisasteroccurred,otherwiseinallprobabilitysome ofthemwouldhavealsoperishedin thecatastrophe.

FatherRosendoendshisreportby wishingtomakepublictheMissionaries'appreciationofthehelptheyreceivedfromlocalServicemeninextinguishingthefirescausedbyincendiarybombs,andindiggingthelarge graveinwhichthelateFatherThomas andthefivenativechildrenkilledin thetragedywereburied,thuspaying FatherThomasthelasttributeofrespectandloveforhiskinddealing withthem.Imayaddthatnothing wasmorebefittingandsurelymore pleasingtoFatherThomasthanto restamongthenativechildrenfor whomhehadsacrificedhishealthand histalentsandenergies,andlastly,as agoodshepherd,hadgivenhislifefor hisaborigines.

DuringthepasttwomonthsIhave beenapproachedbysomanyyoung womenwhohavemadeunsatisfactory marriageswithAlliedServicemen,that Ideemeditexpedientintheinterests ofothergirlscontemplatingsuchalliancestomakepublicsomeofthe dangersoftheseunions.

Inthenewspaperreportswhichhave ensued,ithasamazedanddistressed metofindthatIambeingfiguredas achampionoffretandeasydivorce. Nothingcouldbefurtherfromthe truth.Mywholeobjectistoraise andnottolowermoralstandards,and torestoretohomeandfamilylifethat degreeofstabilityandmutualrespect andconfidenceuponwhichmarried lifemustbebased.Ihave,however, inmyattemptstoshowyounggirls thepitfallsinsuchhastymarriagesas havebeencontractedandwhichhave endedsosoonandsobadly,pointed outthelegaldifficultiesconfrontinga desertedwife.Shehasnoredress throughthealreadyestablishedchannelsofapproachtoanAustralian Courtforeitherdivorceormaintenance.InAustraliawehavenouniformitybetweenStatesinsuchmatters,andthepositionbecomeseven morecomplicatedwhenweseekto applythelawsofthevariousAmericanStates.

Themajorityofusarenotcomplimentedbythoseprofessionalandamateurentertainers(socalled)whoconsidertheonlyentertainmentsforsoldiersaresmutsessions.Butweare appalledthatourownfamilies,our ownfriends,shouldthinkthatpornographyandtrashsatisfyourreading requirements.Weareconcernedthat 90per'cent.ofthereadingmattersent tousistrash.Andwedo wearyofthosesilver screen "lovelies"who,becausetheyhaveno beautyofsoultohereflectedintheir faces,relyon"beauticians"andphotographicexpertsforstudiesofmade-up faces,lewdlimbs,baremidriffs,sweatersilhouettesandbaboonbuttocks. Theaveragesoldierishappierand proudertohavefamilysnaps,photos. ofwifeandchildren,ofsweetheart andofhome.Mostsoldiersaremarried,oraspiretomarriage.Yetthey areconstrainedtoreadpapersand magazinesthatridiculethemarriage bond,featuremaritalinfidelityand sexperversions,makeamockofchildbearing,andderidedecenthomelife. ThetraininggiventotheAustralian soldierindicatesthathighidealsand disciplinedserviceareessentialtoan efficientArmy.Yetwearedeluged withAustralianpapersportrayingthe "typicalDigger"asanundisciplined half-wit.

Perhapsonecouldseeknobetterillustrationofthetragedy involvedbytheSecularistidealoftheseparationofthespiritual fromthetemporalandoftheexclusionofmoralprinciplesfrompubliclifeandlegislation,thanthecurrentdiscussionsaboutdisrupted marriagesbetweenAustraliangirlsandAlliedservicemen.Itis consideredpoliticalrealismtoapproachsocialproblemsfromthe premiss:"Thingsbeingastheyare."Butthisoutlookomits twoessentialconsiderations-firstly,thatmost,ifnotall,ofour socialproblemsareessentiallymoralatbaseand,secondly,that theattempttodealwitheffectsratherthanwithcausesis,ofits nature,stop-gaplegislation,andthereforeephemeral.Wherea problemisbasicallymoral,itissurelyshort-sightedtoessayto dealwithitsheerlyontheshowingofitslegaleffects.Whileto ignoretheradicalnatureofproblemsistoconfesstoineptitude, cynicismandthefailureofseculareducation.Itispreciselythe lackoffundamentalprinciplesandthecouragetoapplythem socially,thatmarksoffforeverthepoliticianfromthestatesman. *

InthepressreportsofthePremiers'discussionsonthequestionofuniformdivorcelegislation,thereisnotsomuchasahint thatanyprincipleofmoralityisinvolved,northatanyuniformity ispossiblewithoutequatingtothelowestcommondenominator. Allthisisverydisheartening,althoughitmustberemarkedthat asocialstigmastillattachestodivorce,evenamongpeoplewho donotprofesstheChristiandoctrineregardingtheindissolubility ofmarriage.ThewordsofPopeLeoXIII.,writtenin1880,are investedbymoderndevelopmentswithapropheticsignificance. "Divorceoncebeingtolerated,"wrotethePope,"therewillbeno restraintpowerfulenoughtokeepitwithinthelimitsfixedor foreseen. Sosoonastheroadtodivorcebegantobemade smoothbylaw,atoncequarrels,jealousies,andjudicialseparations largelyincreasedandsuchshamelessnessoflifefollowedthatmen whohadbeeninfavourofthesedivorcesrepentedofwhatthey haddone,andfearedthat,iftheydidnotcarefullyseekaremedy byrepealingthelaw,thecommonwealthitselfmightsufferdisaster."Inthepresentinstancethosewhoareclamouringforthis furtherrelaxationofthemarriagetieareatthesametimedeprecatinganythingwhichwouldbringthemarriagebondintocontempt.Buttheycannotburnthecandleatbothends.Statistics -ofallcountroesprovebeyonddisputethatoncetheindissolubility ofmarriageisaabnodnedinprinciple,theconceptionofmarriage asasacred.life-longengagementisslowlybutinevitablyundermined.

Itisnotamattesofmuchdifficulty,inthesedaystodiscover peoplewhofranklyregardmarriageasamereexperiment,acontractwhichmaybeabandonedatwill.Andthisattitudearises logicallyonceasingleexceptionisadmittedagainstthepermanencyofmarriage.Divorceencouragesfrivolousmarriages,as Hollywooddemonstratesalltoopainfully."Ifpeople,"wroteG. K.Chesterton,"canbeseparatedfornoreason,theywillfeelitall theeasiertobeunitedfornoreason."Itshouldalsobenoted thattheadvocatesofeasierdivorceareinvariablyconcernedwith theplightofthe"innocentparty,"buttheydonotallowtheirenthusiasmtocoverthosemostinnocentparties-thechildrenof divorce-forbynoothermeanscanthephysicalandmoralwelfareofchildrenbesosafelyasuredasbyindissolublemarriage. What'smore,inallprobability,the originalhorse,thegrandfatherofthe EuropeanhorseswhichwereintroducedintoAmericaafter1492,stamped thepristineturfofthecountrythen. And.quitelikely,thegiantsloth swungfromthebranchesoverhanging thesiteswherethegreatAmerican citiesnowstand.Thoseextinctbeasts werecontemporariesofthefirstAmericans.

Dicuil,theIrishgeographer,who completedhistreatise,"DeMensura OrbisTerrae,"intheyear825,declares thatIrishmonkshadvisitedtheFaroe Isle,situatedalmosthalf-waybetween theOrkneysandIceland,andthat aboutahundredyearsearlier-A.D. 795-some65or70yearsbeforethe dategenerallyacceptedforitsdiscoverybytheScandinavians,theyhad discoveredthelatterisland,whichhe calledThule.Dicuil'stestimonyis confirmedbythetraditionpreserved intheIcelandic"Land-na-Mabok."
