Rafferty)reportsthattheyear1943hasbeenayearofremarkableprogrets fortheSocietiesofthePropagationoftheFaithandtheHolyChildhood.The steadyincreaseinmembership,andconsequentlyinthefinancialreturns, whichhascharacterisedthegrowthofbothSocietiessincetheirinceptionin theArchdiocesehasbeenwellmaintained.FiguresfortheSocietyofthe PropagationoftheFaithshowanincreateinmembershipof3,840,andin financialreceiptsoff4617s.lid.MembershipoftheHolyChildhoodSociety hasreachedthepointwherewemayWellclaimthateveryCatholicchild inourschoolsisamember.Inadditiontopayingtheirmembershipfee,the childrenofmanyschoolstakeakeeninterestintheworkofransoming blackbabies.Byorganisingsportsdays,raffles,inter-classcompetitions, andinother,sometimesveryingenious,waysthechildrensupplementtheir membershipfees.In1943moneyraisedfortheransomofblackbabies reachedthemagnificentsumof£572.

AsweglanceoverthevastMissionfieldsoftheChurchinthisthefifth yearofwar,wefindcauseforsorrowandforjoy.Nootherwarinhistory hascausedsuchdamagetotheactualMissionfields;bothbecauseinno otheragehavetheMissionfieldsbeensofarextendedandbecausenoother warhasreachedoutitsdestructivehandtosomanycountries.Africa, China,Malaya,Burma,Indonesia,India,theSouthSeas-allhavefelteither theheavyimpactofactualwarfare,orthedislocationofMissionsthroughthe internmentofMissionryPriests,Nuns,andBrothers.Hospitals,convents, schools,churchesandorphanages,builtupthroughthepainfulyears,have beenreducedtorubble;Bishops,Priests,NunsandBrothershavediedat theirMissionposts;hundredsofyoungmenandyoungwomen,especiallyin thecountriesofEurope,theirheartsalreadylisteningtoGodsvocation,have beenbarredfromtheMissionfieldsbydeathornationaldisaster.
However,thereismuchforwhichwemustbethankful.Somuchhas beensavedthatmayeasilyhavebeenlost;thefidelityofthenewChristians oftheNearNorthandtheSouthSeashasbeensuccessfullytriedinthefires ofpersecution;everywhere,inspiteofdestruction,inspiteofdisorganisation, God'sworkgoes.on.

Turningoverthelettersduetobe answeredthisweek,Icameacrossseveralwhichthoughnotcallingforan answeratleastdemandagratefulacknowledgement.FromtimetotimeI havereecivedletters'fromnon-Catholiclistenersratherdeploringthetype ofquestionthatisoftenaskedofme inthissessionbyothernon-Catholics. Itmusthavebeenobviousbynow tothosewhohavelistenedregularlyto thesessionthatattimesthequestions havebeenalittleridiculous,attimes almostunbelievablymisinformed,and againattimes,thoughrarelyenough, evenabusiveandscurrilous.Ofcourse, inasessionlikethis,oneisboundto gatherinalotofchaffwiththewheat, sotospeak,andhavingpromisedto tryandregardallquestionsasgenuine andsinceie,Ihaveleftmyselfopen toapertainamountofthiskindof thing.However,Iknowthatitisby nomeansrepresentativeofthegeneral opinionofCatholicsandtheirChurch heldbyothersectionsofthecommunity.Isupposeeverydenomination numbersitsbigotedones-thereare bigotedCatholicsaswellasbigoted Protestants.Butitisencouragingto receiveletterslikethisonefrom "Fairplay,"Subiaco,whowrites:"I thinkitisuptosomeofustoapologiseforafewoftheremarksmadeby someinquirerstoyoursessionasmentionedbyyouovertheair).Insultis neveranyargumenttomymind,and I'vebeenshockedbysomeoftheinsults offeredyou;Ithinkyouaretobecommendedforyourpatienceinyourreplies.Ionlyhopethatinthecase ofProtestantquestionersyouwillnot judgethemanybythefew.Ialso wishtothankyouforthecourtesyof yourreplytomyownquestions."And thelettergoesonfurtherinthatappreciativestrain.ThenthereisanotherfromMr.JamesMcGregor,Swanbourne,whoconcludesabeautifully wordedletterbyaskingmetoreadit overtheair.Well,Iwould,butitis alittlelongandonlyreiteratesthe sentimentsexpressedby"Fairplay." Iwouldliketothank,too,Mrs.Pearson,ofAlbany-road.Maddington,who hasalsowrittendeploringthetoneand contentsofsomeofthelettersIreceive.AlltheselistenersarenonCatholics,whohavebeenanxiousto rectifyanyfalseimpressionthatmight becreatedthroughsomeoftheless courteousletterstowhichtheyall refer.AndformypartIamhappy tohavebeengiventheopportunityof reassuringthemthatneitherInormy fellowCatholicsthinkforonemoment thatsuchignorantandabusivelettersexpressthesentimentsofnonCatholicsgenerally
Now,asI'veoftenstatedbefore,the purposeofthissessionistoexplain tothosewhoseekanofficialanswerto theirqueries,thedoctrinesandpracticesoftheChurchAttimesthesubjectstoucheduponhavecausedacertainamountofcomment,butIam moreorlessatthemercyofmycorrespondents,andhavetriedtohandle theirsallieswithfrankness,dignityand charity.Ithinkthatthosequalities shouldalwayscharacterisetheChurch's presentationofHerdoctrine.
But,Ican'thelpthinkingthatmany Catholicsamongstmylistenersmust havebeenwonderingforsometime pastwhenamIgoing-tostartexplainingsomethingaboutthedoctrinesthat dealwiththeLIFEoftheChurch, HerSacraments,HerSacrifice,theLiturgy,ratherthanHerframework,constitutionandlawsrertainlythisaspectofCatholiclifeisfarmoreinterestingthandiscussionsadnauseumon theregulationsregardingmarriageOr theSpanishCivilWarorthePrimacy ofPeter,whichhaveallbeendoneto death.Buthowcanoneexpectthose whoknowlittleornothingaboutthe Churchtoaskquestionsconcerning thisaspectofCatholicism?Iflistenerswouldpreferthatthesessionbroke newground,thenwhyinthenameof goodnessdon'ttheywriteinandask meafewquestionsregardingthose doctrineswhichuptodateI'venot beengivenanopportunitytoexplain. UnfortunatelyIStillhavedozensof questionstoanswer,butthesoonerI
getqueriesfromanyofmylisteners onthisothermoreimportantsideof theCatholicChurchthesoonerIshall beabletotreatofitinmyanswers.
So,it'suptoyounow,andwith thesefewwordswe'llstartonthelettersforthis evening.
ASeekerAfterTruth,Fremantle: Q.:YouclaimthattheRomanCatholicChurchisinfallible,"thesameyes, terday,to-dayandforever."Why didtheChurchwaittilltheyear1870 beforedefinitelyclaiminginfallibility?
A.:Shedidn't.Thedoctrineofin, fallibilitywasheldtobeanessential partofCatholicteachingrightfrom sheveudaysoftheApostlesthemselves.TheearlyFathersinsistonit, andwiththemtheChurchhasALWAYSclaimedthatthisprerogative ofinfallibilityinmattersoffaithand moralswasconferredbyChristupon St.Peteranduponhissuccessors,the BishopsofRome.TheVaticanCouncilin1870didnotinventanewdoctrine,didnotmakeanewclaim,but merelysaiddefinitely:"Thisisthe Christiandoctrinecont..inedatleast implicitlyintherevelationoriginally giventomankindbyChrist."The ChurchdoesnotsayinHerdefinitions, "Inowrevealthisdoctrine,"but"I definitelydeclarethistobethedoctrinerevealedbyChrist."Ifshe nevertaughtwithsuchauthoritymen wouldsay."Whatisthegoodofthe Church?"Ifshedoesteachwithauthoritytheysay,"Sheisinventingnew doctrines.''Soyhereareyou?

A.:Well,nowthatI'veexplained justwhatCatholicsmeanwhenthey speakoftheinfallibilityof the Church,perhapsyouwilladmitthat sofarfrombeinganacknowledgement thattheChurchhaschanged,aninfalliblepronouncementisonlyanother confirmationandguaranteeofthe changelessnessofherteaching.The declarationofinfallibilityonlyformulatedexplicitlyadoctrinethathadalwaysbeenbelievedimplicitlybyCatholicsofallages.TherewasnoquestionoftheChurchchanging,there neveris,herdoctrinesare,asIsaid, thesameyesterday,to-dayandforever. Whilstonthesubjectofinfallibility, Iwouldlike,atthispoint,toanswera queryfromJ.L.Thomas,Perth:Does nottheinfallibilityofthePopedeny himfree-will,supposinghewantedto purposelymisleadthefaithfulofthe CatholicChurchinanimportantmatter?
A.:Thegiftofinfallibilityhasno bearingatallonthePope'sfree-will. Now,intheeventthatyousupposeandImustsayitisamostunlikely case-inwhichthePopewantedtopur-
poselymisleadtheChurchinanimportantmatterconcerningfaithor morals,thenGod,becauseofHispromisetotheChurch,wouldintervene. ButeveninthiscaseGod'sinterventionwouldnotnecessarilymeanany interferencewiththePope'sfacultyof free-will.Thereisanalmostinfinite numberofwaysbywhichGodcould achieveHispurposewithoutinfluencinginanydegreeatallthefree-willof themanwhowishedtoabusesucha tremendousprerogative.Inthecase youinstancethePopewouldbequite freetomakeuphismindtomislead thefaithful-therewouldbenointerferencethereonGod'spart,butthe Pope,havingmadeuphismind,quite freely,Godwouldthenintervene,miraculouslyifnecessary,topreventthe Popeputtinghisintentionintoeffect. ButthePope'sfree-willisnotviolated. Topreventamanputtinghiswishes intoeffectisnottodenyhimfreewill theformulatingofthoseintentions.
Butsupposeyouinsistand.putit likethis,thatthePopeisnotfreeto speakanythingbutthetruthwhenhe makesaninfalliblepronouncement. Well,hemaymakeuphismindto speakthetruthornot,justashe pleases,butshouldhemakeuphis mindtospeakanythingotherthanthe truththen,asIsaid,Godwouldintervene-nottoinfluencethePope'swill directly,buttopreventhisputting hisfreely-willedintentionintoeffect. Atnostageisthereanyviolationof thePope'sfree-will.
Q.:TheinfallibilityofthePopewas declaredbyaPopewhowasnotthen regardedasinfalliblebyall,andhe mayhaveerredinthatdeclaration.

A.:AsIhavebeenatpainstopoint outthePopein1870didnotdeclarea newdoctrinewhenhedefinedthe dogmaofinfallibility.HemerelydeclaredthatthisdoctrinehadbeenrevealedbyChristHimself,andhadalwaysbeenpartoftheChurch'steaching.Thediscussionatthetimethis doctrinewasdefinedwasnotasto whetherthePopehadpowerfrom Christtospeakwithinfallibleauthorityonmattersoffaithandmorals, butastowhetheritwasprudenttodefinethedoctrineatthatparticulartime whenpoliticalcapitalwouldprobably bemadeoutofthepronouncement. Therewasnodoubt,however,astothe doctrineitself.

towhomtheawardoftheD.S.O.was recentlyannounced,mastedinthe 2/11th.Battalionattheoutbreakof war.Heisoneofthemanymembersofthatfamousbattalionwhohave sincegonetocommandotherunitsof theCommonwealthMilitaryForces. TakingpartinthefirstLibyancampaign,Lt.Col.Honnerdistinguished himself,especiallyatthecaptureof theDernaaerodrome.InGreece, thoughonlyholdingCaptain'srank,he actedassecondincommandofthe battalion.Laterhewasawardedthe MilitaryCrossfarexploitsinthatcampaign.
Withthemainbodyofthe2/11th. Battalionhewasleftbehindatthe evacuationofCrete,butsucceededin escapingfromtheislandsometen weekslater.PromotedMajor,hesaw briefserviceinSyria,andwasthen senttocommandatrainingunit.In 1942hereturnedtoWesternAustraliaandwasattachedasadvisoron trainingtoaVictorianunitinthis State.
ShortlyafterwardsthebigJapanese pushontheKokodatrailtoPort Moresbybegan.RalphHonnerwas promotedtoLt.Colonelandflownfrom PerthtoPortMoresbyatafew hours'notice.Hecrossedthe totakecommandofunitswhichhad sufferedinthefirstassault.During thefollowinghecticweeksthissmall forcedelayedtheJapanesedrive,therebyenablingthe7th.and6th.Divisions tobebroughtfromAustraliatohalt andturnbacktheenemy.
DuringtheJapanesepush,Lieut. ColonelHonner'sbattalion(theVictorian1/39th.)foughtmagnificently againstoverwhelmingodds.Losses weresevere.Threecompanycommanderswerekilledinaction.Ina fewweeksreinforcementssufficientto formanotherbattalionwereabsorbed:Whenthebattalionwasfinallyrelieved,itwasagaindowntoone-third ofitsstrength.
Thefollowingday,Lieut.-Colonel Honner,leavinghisbattaliontoreform,andrefitandrest,tookacommandounit(the2/6th.Ind.Coy.)into action,andleditforacoupleof weekspendingthearrivalofitsregularcommander.
Whenthe39th.Battalionwasagain fitforaction,itwascalleduponfor theBuna-Gonacampaign,anddidoutstandingserviceinthatarea.Itwas forhisworkinthissector,inNovember,1942,thattheD.S.O.awardwas maderecentlytoLieut.-ColonelHonner.HethusbecamethefirstWesternAustraliatobeawardedboththe D.S.O.andtheM.C.inthepresentwar,
AftertheBuna-Gonacampaign,the battalionwentoutofactiontorebuildandthenreturnedtoAustralia. InMarch,1943,itenjoyedabriefhome leave.Duringitsshortfightinglife thisbattalionhasearnedanunusual numberofdecorations.ForgallantryintheperiodbetweenAugustand November,1942,morethantwentydecorationsweregrantedtomembersof

BorninVictoria,shecametoW.A. about1882,andsettledinJarrandale, whereshehaslivedeversince.
MrsHanrahanwasaconverttothe CatholicChurch,andperhapsher greatestcharacteristicwashermarvellous,simpleandlivingFaith.Shewas oneofthosemotherswhomAlmighty Godendowedwithabeautifulsoul, whichwasreflectedinherdailylife andactions.Hersimpleandsaintly lifeendearedhernotonlytoherchildren,buttoallthosewithwhomshe cameincontact.Shewastoopreoccupiedwithherhomedutiesandthe eternalsalvationofhersoultobeattachedtothethingsofthisworld.
Itwasfittingthatherfuneral shouldbefromthechurchinJarrahdale,asshelookedafteritanditspastorsformorethan52year's. 'Numerousmessagesofsympathy werereceivedbyherfamily,including lettersfromHisGracetheArchbishop andmanypriestsoftheArchdiocese.
Predeceasedbyherhusbandand threechildren,Mrs.Hanrahanleaves eightchildren-Eileen(Jarrandale) TomJarrandale),George(Kalgoorlie),SisterM.Immaculate(St.Johnof GodConvent,Subiaco),Dorothy(Mrs. G.McCarthy,Armadale),Pat(Mrs.C. H.Wilkonson,Albany),Norman(Dalkieth),Brian(A.I.F.)-andseventeen grandchildren.R.I.P.
LIEUTENANT-COLONELHONNER, M.C.,D.S.O.
Lieut.-ColonelHonner'sbattalion. Thisnumberwasunequalledbyany otherunitinthewholeofthePapuan campaign.ItincludedoneD.S.O., oneM.B.E.,sevenMilitaryCrosses, twoDistinguishedConductMedals, andtenMilitaryMedals.Inaddition,anumberwerementionedindespatchesorreceivedotherofficialcommendation.
Inthemiddleof1943,Lieut.-Colonel Honnerwastransferredtocommand the2/14th.(Victorian)battalionin theSeventhDivision.ThisunitformedpartoftheforceflowntoKaiapit lastSeptemberfortheattackupon Lae,andittookpartinitscapture.
ImmediatelyLaehadfallen,the drivetocleartheJapanesefromthe MarkhamValleycommenced.Inan actioninthatdriveLieut.-ColonelHonnerwasseriousiwoundedbyaburst ofmachinegunfire,sufferinginjuries tothegroin,hipandhand.After threemonthsinNewGuineahospitals. hehasmadeexcellentprogresstowards recovery,andisnowonhiswayto HollywoodHospitalinWesternAustralia.
Lieut.-ColonelHonnerhadtwobrothersintheA.2.Q.,andeightcousins inthevariousforces.Oneofhisbrothersisnowaprisonerof.warinGermany,andoneofhiscousinsisRev. FatherJohnHonner,seniorchaplain ofthe11th.AustralianDivision.
BeforehisenlistmentLieut.-Colonel HonnerwasaparishionerofNedlands, wherehiswifeandchildrenstillreside inStanley-street,andwherehistwo eldestchildrenarepupilsoftheLoreto Sisters.

ThisyearAustraliaDayhasavitalnewsignificanceforAustralians.Tomanyofusithashithertobeenapredominantlyretrospectiveoccasion,atimeforsoberreflectionuponthefateof ournationalllyfirst-born.Recenteventshavechangedallthat, andfromhenceforththeemphasiswillbe,whereperhapswe shouldalwayshaveplacedit-onthefuture.Themagnitudeof ourdebttothefallen(andthepusillanimitywithwhichwehave sincepursuedtheidealtosafeguardwhichtheygavetheirlives)is beingmoregenerallyrealised.Itremainstooutlinesomething ofthetaskthatliesahead;thetasktowhichwesetourhand.but leftundone;thesupremetaskofbuildingaChristiannation.This idealwasnotalwaysevident.Foralongtimeourlandwasregardedmerelyasadumpinggroundforhumanrefuse.Buteven ourveryfirstnationalleaderhadotheraspirations,andbefore Phillipfinallysailedfromtheseshoreshehadsownandcultivated aseedwhichhaspersistedinthefaceofseeminglyoverwhelming opposition,andwhichitmaybeourprivilegetoseebearfruit.The fourmillionsthatpeopledthislandatthebeginningofthecentury(lidnotfullyappreciatetheirheritage,butwiththeshockof war,andthegloryofAustralianmanhoodinflower,weknewourselves-anation.
To-dayinacommunityofsevenmilioncitizens,thenewgenerationwhichformsthespearheadofournationalefforthasbeen firedwiththeheroismofAnzac.Itis,then,anurgentnecessityto clarifyournationalaspirations,thatthispatrioticvigourmaybe directedalongsoundlines.Youthisonceagaineagertocarry thefive-starredflagtovictory,nomatterhowforbiddingthetask, butithasanundeniablerighttodemandacrystalclearobjective. Thenationalidealwecherishisnotrestrictedto-thoseidosyn craciesofmannerandspeechwesometimesaffect;itispreeminentlyamatterofhumanfraternity,acharacteristicforwhichthe Australianisaby-wordamongthenations.Genuinepatriotism always5:firing.fromthisfundamentallyChristianoutlook,by v.!lid::allme',recogniseHisdisciples.Butoflatethisspirithas ;,eenlangui.sh.ngamongstus,wehavebecomeenmeshedinan ever-heighteningclasswar.Whatmustbehealedbeforeallelse, beforeournationcancontinueunitedalpngthepathofitsdestiny, isthewideningbreachbetweenLabourandCapital.Thesetwo armedcampsinourmidstareagraverthreattoourexistencethan anyaggressorcouldbe.ThedisastrouscoalstrikesintheEastern 5tattesarebutonesymptomoftheprevalentsocialunrest.To theaverageAustralianitwouldseemthatconsiderablymoremoral courageisrequiredtcfacetheeconomicbarragethantoflinghimselfintomartialchaos.Partisansmayshoutatoneanother thebitterallegationsofCommunistsabotageandCapitalistsuppression.Alone,perhapstheChristianChurchcanappreciatethe claimsandrightsofeach.andperformthetrulyherculeantaskof reconciliation.
TimeandagaintheChurch'srepresentativeshavefacedthe strong,andmarkedthelimitsofhispower,andinshowingasympatheticunderstandingofthemodernworkman'splighthave pointedoutthepitfallsthatthreatenhim.Morerealisticallythan anyotherguidehavethePapalEncyclicalsanalysedtherootsof thedisease.Evennow,atthismostcriticaloftimes,hastheHierarchyofAustraliaactedwithresolution.Thedecisiontoissue eachyearanexpositionofthetraditionalChristianprinciplesof socialjusticeandtoprayfortheirtriumph,hasarousedtremendousenthusiasmamongallmembersoftheCatholiclaity,especiallyamongCatholicworkersinboththeagriculturalandtheindustrialsphere.Tothemitisasymboloftherealinterestwhichthe CatholicChurchhasalwaystakenintheirmaterialaswellastheir spiritualwelfare,andoftheinspirationwhichherprincipleshave providedforthosemilitantapostlesofsocialjustice,whoinevery countryoftheworldhavedonesomuchfortheworkingclass. Post-warAustraliawillhebesetwithmyriadproblemsandnever beforewilltheimpactoftheCatholiccultureandrationalityhave meantsomuchtothepreservationandinitiationofwhatreally constitutesnationalgreatness.
