ItcannotbedoubtedthatSt.Gregory,adheringtotheopinionofSt. Augustine,andhavinginmindthe CanonoftheSacredBooks,ashanded downbyhispredecessors,deniedthat theBooksoftheMachabeeswerecan onicalaccordingtotheHebrewCanon, butnotaccordingtotheChristian. InthisSt.GregoryfollowedtheexampleofmenlikeOrigenandSt.Jerome, who,whenaddressingthemselvesto theJewishdoctorsinconnectionwith thesebooks,excludethemfromthe Canon(JewishCanon)but,onother occasions,frequentlyquotethemas sacred,followingtheCanonofthe Church,notthatoftheSynagogue.
