Itisnowsixteenmonthssince theOblateFathersatFremantle placedtheirParishHallatthe disposaloftheC.W.O.forthe entertainmentofAlliedServicemenandMerchantSeamen.It hasbeenamostpopularventure andisprobablythebestknown CanteenamongtheCatholicsof W.A.Theweek'sactivitiesbeginonSundaymorningwithrefreshmentsafterthethreeMasses. Coffeeortea.sandwiches,biscuitsandfruitdisappearrapidly betweenthreehundredmen.A three-coursehotdinneratone o'clock,afternoontea,andahigh teaatsix,ensuresthatSunday, besidesbeingadayofrestfor theboys,isalsoadayforel.!innerman.Duringtheweeksix o'clockteaisreadyforallwho come.TheSundaydinnerisa newfeature,putonbecausemost ofthecafesareclosedthatday.

Thebi-weeklydances(WednesdayandSunday)continueto bewellpatronised.Supperis alwaysserved.OnWednesday nightsadancingclassforlearnersisaregularfeature.The musicisexcellent;occasionallya DutchSailors'Orchestraispresent.MostSundaynightsthe onlythingwrongisthatthehall isovercrowded.

Tennisenthusiastsarewelloff inthisCanteen.Onalternate daystheyhavegrassandhard courtstoplayon.Racquets, tennisballs,sportsshirts,shorts, andshoesareprovided,andto crownall,ashowertofollow.

TheCatholicsofW.A.have goodreasontobeproudofthe FremantleCanteen.Weare doingourbesttomaketheboys feelthattheCatholicChurchhas

theirinterestsatheart,andthat wearedoingourparttogive themaRecreationalHallthatis secondtonone.Themendeeplyappreciateeverythingthatis doneforthem.Evenwhenthey aretransferredtoPerth,andbeyondit,theycontinueontheir leavenightstocomedownand spendtheirtimehere.Aneloquenttributetothehomelyatmospherethatprevails.

TheChildrenofMaryattached toSt.Patrick'shavechargeof Sundaymorning'sactivities;a groupofladies,allmembersof theC.W.L.(andipsofactoof C.N.V.O.Auxiliary),anddrawn fromFremantle,North,South andEast,Cottesloe.andMosman Park,caterfortheeveningsduringtheweekandthedance nights.

TheSpiritualsideiswelllookedafter;thousandsofprayer books,hundredsofRosarybeads, andinnumerablemedalshave beendistributedduringtheyear.

TheStatueofOurLadyis lightedupbeforethedances,and theCatholics,ofbothsexes,presentassembleintwolinesdown thehallandaskourMother's blessingandprotection.This prayerisneveromitted.When non-Catholicsarepresent,they standasamarkofrespectwhile theprayerisbeingsaid.

Twobeautifulscrollswithover athousandsignaturestestifyto thegratitudeoftheServicemen forwhattheC.W.O.hasdone forthem.

Q.:"WhenandwheredidFreemasonryoriginate?"

A.:TherearesomeextravagantnotionscurrentastotheoriginofMasonry.Churchward,forexample,in the"TreasuryofMasonicThought," underthechapterontheGreatPyramid,says:"Masonrygoesback3,000 yearsbeforeChristtotheEgyptian mysteriesofHorus."Othersuch claimsaremadebysomeMasonic historians;butalthoughMasonry claimstobepaganinorigin,and whilstittalkspaganism,thebestMaconichistorians,suchastheGerman Begeman,ridiculethesetheoriesand admitthatitbeganasaJacobitepoliticalsocietywhichrepudiatedthe Pretender,andfoundedthefirstGrand LodgeinLondon,underthepatronage ofthePrinceofWales,in1717.Its constitutionandritualwerewritten bythePrince'sHuguenotchaplain, aidedbyaScotchPresbyterianminister.Itsaimwasmutualassistance, andtheworshipofthe"GreatArchitectoftheUniverse,"inwhichJews, ChristiansandMohammedanscould

equallyparticipate.Itwastaken upbyFrenchrationalistsin1721,and inthefollowingyearitsorganisation wascompletedwiththenewbookof theconstitutionsandthethreedegreesofapprentice,fellowandmaster.TheScottishRiteaddedthirty totheseoriginalnewdegrees;they wereintroducedinEnglandbyPrestonin1772,andinAmericabyWebb in1773.

Freemasonrywasfirstcondemned byPopeClementXIIin1738,even thoughmanyprominentCatholicsof thetimebelongedtothelodges,such astheDukeofWharton,theDukeof Norfolkandothers.Thiscondemnationhasbeenconfirmedbymany Popessince,whohaveallagreedthat MasonrywasasocietythatunderminedtheCatholicfaith,fosteredreligiousindifferentism,evenadvocated atheism,whilefosteringauniversal contemptforallecclesiasticalauthority.

Q.:"WhathappensifaCatholicdoes becomeaMason?"

A.:ThePapalexcommunicationdeprivestheCatholicwhojoinsthe MasonsoftheSacraments,ofallshare intheChurch'spublicprayers,and finallyofCatholicburial.

Q.:"WhyareCatholicsdeniedtheir religioniftheyjointheMasonic Lodge?"

A.:Because,asIhavesaid,the MasonicsystemandtheCatholicsystemarenotreconcilable,andnoCatholicmayjointhelodgewithoutrenouncinghisChurch.Ihavejust outlinedthereasonsfortheChurch's ban;insolegislatingandinplacing suchextremesanctionsonMasonic membership,Shehasnootherinterest atheartthanthepreservationofthe faithoftheindividualCatholic.There isnodenyingtheinherentantagonism ofMasonrytotheCatholicChurch.

SenatorDelpech,Presidentofthe GrandOrientinFrance,saidonSeptember20,1902:"Thetriumphofthe Galileanhaslastedmanycenturies, butnowHediesinHisturn.He passesawaytojointhedustofthe ageswiththeotherdivinitiesofIndia, GreeceandRome,whosawsomany deceivedcreaturesprostratebefore theiraltars.BrotherMasons,werejoicethatwearenotwithoutour shareinthisoverthrowoffalseprophets.TheRomishChurchbegan todecayfromthedaytheMasonic associationwasestablished."Again, in1913,theGrandOrientofFrance said:"TheaimoftheGrandOrient istocrushRomanCatholicismin Francefirst,andthenelsewhere." MasonicjournalsinEnglandreplied totheseandotherquotationsbysayingthatEnglishMasonrydidnot

sympathisewithsuchextravagantutterances,andthatithadnoopinions, politicalorreligious.ButtheAmericanPikereplied:"Itisidletoprotest.WeareMasons,andwerecognisetheFrenchbrotherhoodas Freemasonsinvirtueofsolidarity. Oursisauniversalfraternity."As theAncientScottishRitefortheinstalmentofaGrandMastersays: "Thereisasacredbondunitingall thebrethrenofourcraft.However scatteredovertheearth,theyall composeonebody."

SoyouseethatMasonryassuchis opposedtotheCatholicChurch.I knowthatamongstthemembersare manyfinebroadandtolerantmen, whoratheradmiretheCatholicChurch ifanything;andthereisnoreason whyCatholicsandMasons,making dueallowanceforeachother'spersuasions,shouldnotbepersonallyfriendlyinthiscountry,observingalways truecharitytowardsindividuals.NeverthelessinthismattertheChurch hasgraveresponsibilities,andifwe disobeyHerwisheswithregardto membershipofthecraft,wedoso withtherenunciationofourCatholic privileges.

Q.:"WhyshouldyourChurchforbid aCatholicfrombecomingaFreemason,seeingthatinthehigherdegreeitisessentialtobeaChristian,soIunderstand?'

A.:ItisNOTessentialtobea Christian.Bro.T.J.Lawrence,inhis book,"Freemasonry,"1925,p.58,says: "MasonrydoesnotevenrequireaprofessionofChristianity.ItfreelyadmitsJews,Mohammedans,andothers whorejectChristiandoctrine."Dr. FortNewton,in"BrothersandBuilders,"saysthat,likeeverythingelse inMasonry,theBibleisasymbolof God'sperpetualrevelation,whichGod isstillmakingthroughtheOldTeseament,theKoran,theVedas,etc.That istheendoftheBibleintheChristiansense.Inthesamebookhe writesthatMasonryisnotAreligion, butTHEreligion,andthatMasons pursuetheuniversalreligion.That istheendofChristianityastheuniversalreligion.Itisbecauseofits un-ChristiancharacterthattheFree PresbyterianChurchofScotland,in 1927,madeabstentionfromthelodge aconditionofitsownmembership.In

A.:Maybeyoudo,sodoI.But thosewhohavedonesohavepreferred thetemporalbenefitsofMasonryto theprinciplesoftheirreligion.They havevoluntarilyrenouncedtheir Church,anddeprivedthemselvesof therighttotheSacraments,whichto atrueCatholicmeanseverything.And Iwouldcertainlysaythis,aCatholic Masonisnotaveryhappyman.I knowbecausetheyhavetoldmeso.

A.:NoteverysecretsocietyiscondemnedbytheChurch,butonlythose whichinvolveacertainkindofsecrecy.AMasontakesasolemnoath tokeepsecretanymattersheard withinthelodge,withnoprevious ideaoftheirnatureandwithnocertaintyoftheextenttowhichheis committinghimself.Manyaman whohastakenthatoathhasrefused, becauseofit,tofollowhisconscience. Secrecyispermissibleonlywhere legitimatebusinessinconcerned,and nomanismorallyfreetobindhimselfblindlybyanoath,whenheis notevensurethatinjusticetoothers willnotbeinvolved.AlbertPike,an AmericanMason,tellsusinhisbook, "TheInnerSanctuary,"thatitisthe dutyofaRoyalArchMasontoespousethecauseofacompanionRoyal ArchMason,whetherheberightor wrong.Itisimmoraltotakeany oathwhichislikelytoinvolvesuch conduct.

WhenthedrumsofWarfirst soundedandthousandsofAustralianmenandwomenanswered thecalltotheserviceoftheir country,theroutinelife'ofthe averagecitizenreceivedasevere upset.Dislocations,restrictions andregulationsforeigntoeverydaylifesuddenlyconfrontedus untilwebecameacutelyaware thatmodernwarfareextendsfar behindthelinesofbattleinto thehearthandhomeofevery oneofus.Butnomatterhow greatlytheacceptedevery-day existenceoftheaveragecitizen wasinterferedwith,therecould benocomparisonwiththegreatersacrificemadebythemembers oftheArmedForceswhosaw theirdutyplainlyandaccepted theresponsibilityreadilywith thepromisebehindthemthat thoseremainingwouldnotlet themdown.Thispromiseresultedincertainresponsibilities beingthrustonthecommunity, whichonlythoseoutsidethe Forcescouldadequatelyperform. Andofthosedutieswasthe spiritualandmaterialneedsof themenoftheFightingForces.

DoyouconsiderthattheCatholiccommunityhasplayeditsrole inthisrespect?Canithejustly claimedthatwe,inthisState, haveralliedtothecallandprovidedourshareofthisnational duty?

Inordertofindtheanswerto thatquestion,itisnecessaryto analysetheoperationsofthe CatholicWelfareOrganisation, theofficiallyrecognisedchannel throughwhichtheeffortsofthe Catholiccommunityarelinked withtheactiveservices.This bodywasformedin1940.The taskconfrontingitwassuchas todemandmuchvoluntaryeffort andfinancialsupportfromthe Catholiccommunitygenerally.

Fromasmallbeginningthree yearsago,thedevelopmentof C.W.O.activitieshasexpanded, untilto-dayitsserviceisStatewide,anditsworkisrecognised asaverymaterialcontributionto thewelfareoftheForces.

Activitiesfirstcommencedwith theprovisionofadequateaccommodationattheNorthamCamp. Alargerecreationhallwaserected,completewithstageand roomsfortheattendantand Chaplain.Thehallwasfullyfurnishedinamostcomfortable manner.Radio,games,literatureandwritingmaterialwere providedandtheaccommodation attheC.W.O.centreinthis Camphasalwaysbeenfully taxedtoprovideforthosemen desiringtoshareitsbenefits.

Laterafurtherhallwasbuilt atMelville.Itwassimilarly

furnishedandfitted,andinboth hutsdailyMassbecameafeature,andthebalanceoftheday andnightthehallsareopento all-corners,whoderiverecreation andrestfromtheservicefreely renderedwithoutcostofany kindtotroopsofalldenominations.

Thecontinuedexpansionofthe strengthoftheForcesdemanded greateractivityonthepartofthe C.W.O.Itsoughtandobtained accommodationatRottnest.Furniturewastransportedtothe IslandandacompleteC.W.O. centrefirmlyestablishedonthat outpost.AsfarnorthasGeraldtonandbeyond,andtothesouthernmentsectionsoftheState, C.W.O.servicewasextendedas required.Tooutpostsandsmaller campsnotpubliclyknown,the callforhelpwasalwaysanswered.

AtFremantleamodernDepot wasestablishedunderthecareof theOblateFathers,wheremeals werealwaysavailabletoSailors andSoldiers,wheredancesare heldtwiceweekly.wheremenon leavemayplaybilliardsortable tennis,ortakeashower,orread orwrite,ordoanyoneofmany thingstofillintheirleavewith cleanandpleasantfun.

Yes,itcanjustlybeclaimed thattheCatholiccommunityhas playeditspartinourdutytoour lightingmen.Thousandsof poundshavebeencollecteland expended.Overthree-quarters ofamillionletterheadshavebeen suppliedbytheC.W.O.totroops inW.A.,thousandsofmealsserved,smokesandsweetshavebeen distributedtosickandwounded inhospital;infact,noangleof welfareworkhasbeenneglected bytheC.W.O.initseffortsto playitspart.

TheCatholicSocialGuildhavearrangedforaweeklytalkoverStations CPR--TZ,onCatholicprinciplesofSocialJustice.Mr.K.F.Spruhan, Editorof"TheRecord,"willconducttheSessions,whichforthefirstthree monthswillbedevotedtoananalysisofthetwentyrecommendationsembodiedin"PatternforPeace,"issuedthisyearwiththeformalapprovalof theHierarchy.TheGuildarealreadyresponsibleforinauguratingthe"CatholicAnswer,"conductedbyFatherLalor,andthisnewsteptowardsthe diuerninationofCatholicSocialprincipleswillhavetheenthusiasticendorsementoftheCatholicbodygenerally.

Followingontheextraordinaryinterestshowninthisyear'sStatement onSocialJustice,publishedunderthe titleof"PatternforPeace,"theGuild havedecidedtosponsoraweeklysessiontobeknownas"SocialJustice Session,"inwhichthereforms,suggestions,andprinciplesembodiedinthe "PatternforPeace"willbeanalysed andcommenteduponbyMr.Spruhan. Itisconfidentlyhopedthatthepopularinterestarousedbythesesessions willjustifytheircontinuance.The presentserieswillcoveraperiodof thirteenbroadcasts,butobviouslythe fieldofsocialreconstructionisfartoo extensivetobecoveredinsuchaseries.

Thesebroadcasts,togetherwith "TheCatholicAnswer,"arebeingfinancedthroughmembershipsubscriptionstotheGuild.Atthemoment thetotalmembershipisjuston300, andthesubscriptionis6/6aquarter. Severalstudyordiscussiongroups havealreadybeenorganised,withthe assistanceoftheGuild,e.g.,atSubiaco,WestPerth,Northamandat Headquarters.Stocksofwhatever literatureisprocurablearealways keptattheHeadquartersoftheGuild, andallpossibleassistanceisgivento theseandsimilaractivitiesforthe furtheranceofthecampaignforSocial Justice.

TwelvemonthsagotheExecutiveoftheC.W.O.arranged withtheCatholicGirls'Movementtoco-opttheservicesof thatbodyastheLadies'AuxiliarytotheCatholicWelfareOrganisation.Immediatelythe membersofthenewAuxiliary setaboutorganisingaGroupof theirmemberstotakepart,togetherwithotherwomen'sorganisations.instaffingthevariousCanteen.Buffets,etc.,under thedirectionoftheCitizens'ReceptionCouncil.Itwasnot longbeforeagroupof140girls wasfunctioningandregistered astheC.W.O.Group.The membersofthegroupcreated suchafavourableimpressionthat beforelongtheywereaskedto organise,ifpossible,asecond grouptoassistinthisworkof hostessingthevariousCanteen Servicesavailablefortheuseof menandwomenoftheForcesin thecity.Atthemomentsome 250membersareattendingregularlyattheTownHalland PhyllisDeanHostel.Members alsoattendtheC.W.O.Depotat Fremantle.

Anotheractivityhasbeenthe organisationofanEmergency ServiceCompany.whichhasbeen officiallyregisteredwiththeRed Cross.MembersoftheCompany,whichhassomethirty strong,areallkeenandenthusiastic,andwearingtheregulation uniformtheyaretakingtheir partinallthedutiesusuallyallottedtothisRedCrossService.

TheAustralianComfortsFund readilygrantedrationcoupons forthesupplyofknittingwool, andthechildrenhavecompleted anumberofpairsofsockswhich havebeenverywelcometothe MerchantSeamenwhoreceive thesearticlesattheDepot.It willbeencouragingtothechildrentoknowthattheirgifts weresowelcome,andtheExecutiveoftheC.W.O.thankthem fortheirco-operation.

Sixtyeightmemberswerepresent,andapologieswerereceivedfromsomewho wereunabletoattend.ThechieffeatureoftheeveningwasFather Slowey'stalkon"ArtinGeneral," whichtouchedonmanybranchesof Art,andincludedsomeremarkson thatvexedquestion,"Jazzversus Classics."Ourprominentjazzfiend wasabsent,butotherspresentseemed tobeinagreementwiththeopinion thatjazz(orswing)hasmuchtocommendit;butitisonlyinsomefew examplesthatanythingapproaching thelastingappealoftheclassicsisto befound.Thequestionofwhether beautywasamatterofutilityorornamentwasalsoconsidered,and FatherSloweypointedoutthatsome thingswhicharemadestrictlyforuse arealsoverybeautiful.(Herefrained fromcommentingontheuglinessof many"ornaments.")
